IT TAKES A COMMUNITY If it were not for the generosity of our corporate citizens and MB Chamber members the MBCC would not be able to work at being a valuable local business resource for our city and our businesses. And the buy-in is minimal! I am so happy with the outcome of the remodel of our office space. We feel it represents what we want to say as a chamber. We are open, inviting, engaging, vibrant. We think office décor should say something about the personality of a company. Perhaps the DMV should consider a remodel. Also, we are so appreciative of our wonderful members who donated their services, equipment and furniture for the offices. It makes all of us at the chamber excited that we have companies who are as passionate as we are about what we do that they will help with something as big as an office remodel. Plus, I have less issues with my board of directors when things are donated. Thank you, thank you. lthough it’s common, the origin of a project for IA Interior Architects (IA) doesn’t always take the form of a formal presentation around a conference table or a response to an RFP. In fact, it was a casual conversation during a networking event hosted by the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce in March 2017 that led to a collaborative redesigning of the Chamber’s local office. As a global firm with 20 locations, IA is a collection of architects, designers and strategists that focuses on interior architecture with a diverse set of clients. The company approaches each project with a commitment to innovation and community with a specialized ability to design workplace and office settings. “The Chamber office was outdated, unmaintained and did not represent the image that we felt it deserved,” said Michelle Winn, Director of Membership and Retention at the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce. “It was difficult to function in a cluttered and unorganized office and conference room. I felt it was important to present a clean, efficient, organized office and conference room to our members and potential members.” In the case of the Chamber of Commerce offices, Winn identified key priorities that informed the direction of the project. Not least of all was the feeling amongst Chamber employees that the work they did on a daily basis to foster economic development and make valuable connections between residents was not reflected by the appearance of their offices. ments that greet guests of the building, the office itself paled in comparison to the Chamber’s business and the staff within it. Without the resources to undergo a full-scale office renovation, the Chamber of Commerce relied on donated services from businesses in the area for the renovation. In addition to donating time to conceptualize the design plan, IA’s Los Angeles office also coordinated vendor donations for carpet and furniture, furniture delivery and installation. By appealing to a strong network of vendors with similar commitments to community organizations, IA was able to recruit other companies who donated their time and products to the Chamber of Commerce. Other participating organizations on the project include: CPM One Source, Innovative Office Solutions, Interface Flor and Tangram Interiors. Perhaps more integral than the donations themselves are the participating companies and vendor representatives who secured materials for the Chamber of Commerce office. based company providing commercial and institutional relocation services as well as facilities-focused project management, IA collaborated with Katie Akker, Lead Designer, and Jane Shin of Client Relations to secure Kimball adjustable height workstations and Humanscale ergonomic chairs. “CPM has a longstanding relationship with IA, and we were honored to be brought into this project and be able to help out our community,” said Akker. “The CPM team believes in environmental stewardship and community involvement; this project was a great example of how these can coincide – by repurposing items and extending their use life, while helping out our community partners.” Kasey Kipp, Sales Executive at Tangram Interiors, a firm that provides design and furnishing services, coordinated the donation of guest chairs and meeting room chairs by Coalesse to help materialize the design plans for the Chamber of Commerce. Flooring options for the Chamber’s office were donated by Interface Flor, a designer and creator of commercial carpet tile, with the help of Account Executive, Kristina Wurtz. Lastly, a Haworth AV meeting table was donated by a furniture dealer called Innovative Office Solutions through the stewardship of Debra Haas, Director of Sales, and Paula Dill, Director of Strategic Accounts. Donated materials for this project totaled an approximate value of $90,000. continued on page 8

Grassroots projects like the revitalization of the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce offices, allow IA to extend the company commitment to people, culture and innovation outside of the firm. “The new space is open concept and is consistent to many of the other high profile business in the area,” said Winn. “We didn't get a donation of outdated and unwanted office furniture; we were supplied with the best from IA and their partners to guide the designing of a functional work space and furniture to meet our daily needs.” This philanthropic facet of IA’s culture made room for initiatives like IA Reach, a firm-wide organization that is

committed to investing resources back into the communities where each office thrives. “Working with companies that operate by the same principles and see the potential in local efforts bring our collective work to an elevated, stronger level,” said Helen Watts, Managing Principal of IA Interior Architects in Los Angeles. Though each project may have a different starting point or pose new challenges along the way, the force that drives IA Interior Architects is a recurring question: “How can we, as agents of change and growth, leave this site better than we found it?”

Monica graduated from New York University and the Fashion Institute of Technology. As a resident of South Bay, Monica enjoys connecting her passions of design with the local beach communities.

A few hours later, they had the Manhattan Beach Chamber business back to normal. Through conversation with Michelle Winn, Director of New Memberships and Member Retention, Alcott learned that the Chamber was going to be renovating their office space. During Alcott’s onsite evaluation, it was clear that the Chamber was working with outdated systems, and that their technology was not suited to handle their business requirements.
