On Creating Buzz – Getting The Biggest Bang for the Buck With the close of 2014 and the emergence of the New Year, it is exciting to see how much has been accomplished and the return on all the efforts. Everyone here at the Manhattan Beach Chamber is dedicated to creating a strong quality of life and we do so through business development, advocacy and promotion. Like every company and household, it is important for the Chamber to see where we have received the best bang for our buck and what has created the most buzz for everyone involved. Sometimes it is the things we least expect that generate the most result and end up being what an organization is known for. Over the course of this year we have launched or revamped a number of events, built new platforms for our business community, and sought out new ways to advocate on behalf of Manhattan Beach. Some of the events include DineMB, Bite at the Beach, and the South Bay Business Leaders Summit which have focused on education as well as exposure. Working to create a complete marketing tool for our members requires an ongoing vision. This year we expanded to include a weekly radio show, quarterly business journal, additional web offerings, and dedicated social media marketing plans. In addition the Chamber worked closely with many civic organizations along with the City of Manhattan Beach to advocate on behalf of the Manhattan Village, 900 Club, Shade Hotel, Downtown Zoning, and many other key issues. Discussing what we do is not the same as understanding what that has meant and where we have found success. Sometimes success comes
in the form of removing programs or events that are not generating the brand awareness or return you were looking for. While everything we did last year generated more than 400 million impressions for our community and businesses, this is not the only measure we look to. Through evaluation it became obvious we were doing something which required more resources than they were worth. This year we moved our breakfast sessions to lunch, expanded the reach of our quarterly educational lunches, and took our evening networking events to quarterly. All of these decisions were based on what our members were getting, what it was costing us, and how we could deliver more. As we look forward to 2015 there will be continual evaluation of not only the above-mentioned programs, but also what people are asking for. This will be an exciting year for the City of Manhattan Beach and we are eager to work with the community, businesses, and the new City staff on key issues ranging from zoning to development and investment. Hopefully you will enjoy the insights provided by Heil Brice and Localite LA in the pages to follow. There are many ways to blog, ranging from traditional posts to blogging as a promotional tool that helps sell a product or a specific service that you offer. tilizing a blog for your marketing efforts is more important now than ever before. There was a time when the term “blogger” was sort of a curse word within the journalistic world. Since that time, the internet has almost crippled traditional print and taken a progressive approach to not only the writing community but the marketing community as well. A business blog is one of the most costeffective and easiest ways to promote your business. If used correctly, it can drive traffic to your website, increase sales, establish you as an authority in your industry and also help you to reach new markets. Starting a blog is very simple but utilizing it to your advantage is something that takes commitment. There are a few simple steps to follow in order to build a successful blog and have people return to read your content. The first component is the ability to create unique and informative content. Updating your blog on a regular basis is the second

key to starting a successful blog. Long periods of time in-between posts will leave readers bored and picture your company as unreliable. Last but not least, use your own voice when creating content. Let your audience know where you are coming from. This will separate you from other blogs and companies who don't use a blog to their advantage. Many professionals have begun to incorporate the blog component within their marketing efforts to simply separate themselves from their competitors, but there are several ways in which the blogging feature can help your ROI and build your business. In many ways, a blog can help give your company a voice. Sharing personal stories about yourself or your clients will help give customers a better insight into what your company does and it also helps share your company's personality with the readers. People are more connected than ever before with the rise of the internet and a blog is the perfect way to share your story with the world. Blogs help you become the professional in any particular field. In addition to sharing personal stories about your business, you can give your audience tips and statistics on your areas of expertise. By taking advantage of these blog posts, you can become the reliable resource within your industry, helping you gain an audience that relies on your content. When someone has a particular question, you now will become their go-to expert. There are many other ways to blog other
than a traditional post. You can use it as a promotional tool to help sell a product or a specific service that you offer. With this approach, your blog becomes a platform to help boost company sales. Even if people already know what your company does, this gives them a better insight and will make them feel more connected than ever before.
Customer service is a key component to any successful business and a blog can help build a solid relationship between you and your audience. A blog can provide feedback to any questions being asked and also provide helpful solutions to any problems that may occur. People relate to good customer service and are more likely to become repeat customers when treated well. Sharing a blog post on a regular basis is a great way to build your SEO. The more activity that is generated from a particular web address will retrieve much more attention and attract visitors to your site. Using this approach is much cheaper than paying to have your name appear at the top of a particular Google search. When creating content, keep keywords in mind. All content on your blog, from your titles to your tags, should be optimized with keywords. Spend some time researching popular keywords in your industry and use them liberally throughout your content. Keywords will also help people find your blog when searching those relevant topics. After using these keywords and publishing a post, put a link to it on all of your social media channels; especially Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram if it is relevant to your industry. After all this talk about the traditional ways in using a blog, let’s briefly touch on the “other” blog. If there is one thing being effectively used now to capture people's attention, it is the video. It seems like every day, there is a new video that has gone viral and engulfs everyone's attention. If you feel comfortable in front of the camera, feel free to introduce yourself or your employees to your customers directly. If you are more comfortable behind the camera, then use it to give customers a direct look inside your company. After taking advantage of all of these tools, make sure you have a web stats tool to measure your blog's performance. Over time, as you add more posts to your blog, it will give you a clearer picture of how people are finding your blog and, most importantly, which of your posts are popular so you know the kind of content your readers like. There are a ton of benefits to having a business blog. If you follow these suggestions you will be well on your way to having a successful blog and a great business model.

A Q&A with Jill Brunkhardt of Chevron
Jill Brunkhardt has been a Public Affairs Representative at the Chevron El Segundo Refinery since September 2006. Prior to working for Chevron, Jill worked in Public Affairs and Corporate Communications at The Aerospace

How did you get started in your profession?
When I graduated from college I took an entry level position in the accounting department at the Aerospace Corporation. After a year, I moved into a public affairs and corporate communications position where I helped with internal communication, executive communication, media relations, community relations, employee engagement, graphics, corporate events, conferences, and the company newsletter. In time I took on more of a role in corporate events and community relations leading to the creation of a new position. After nearly nine years at The Aerospace Corporation, it was time for me to move on. In 2006, I was so fortunate to be hired into my current position as a Public Affairs Representative for the Chevron El Segundo Refinery. This has been a dream job, and I couldn’t ask to work for a better corporation.

Locally, we work with school districts, cities, businesses, and civic and non-profit organizations to understand their needs and support programs that will help deliver measurable and lasting results. At the Chevron El Segundo Refinery, the majority of our funding helps to support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs from K to 12 and beyond because tomorrow’s workforce demands it. We have invested more than $7 million in STEM programs at local schools over the last five years because we want to give students access to the tools necessary for a successful future. We want our students to be the next generation of leaders. At

A: I believe economic development forums are very influential to local businesses and the community in general. Creating an outlet that invites leaders from other areas and businesses alike to share lessons learned and best practices is a great way to help business in the community. This year, I decided to chair the next South Bay Business Leaders’ Summit, an event that will feature a number of informational sessions to give businesses best practice advice from leadership and communication to branding and marketing campaigns. This is another event that I’d like to see continue each year to help businesses in the community learn and grow. A: Every brand depends on its people to ensure its success. While brand strategy, design and marketing help define a brand in the marketplace, it is employees who prove the value of a brand for customers and stakeholders. This is especially true of Chevron, the energy company devoted to Human Energy. Our value proposition is based on the premise that it is through the use of our human ingenuity, dedication and drive that we produce the solutions that fuel human progress. One of our goals at Chevron is to be recognized as one of the world's most admired energy companies known for its people, partnership and performance. We strive to be known as the source of the energy needed to fuel personal and community progress. A: You don’t need to have an extravagant budget to effectively market your business. Be generous with your time, and be active in our community. Be genuine and be yourself. Get out there and show your face. Become involved with community-based organizations and get to know people. The more people you get to know and the more people that get to know you, the better. When people can put a face to a business, it is worth its weight in gold! Don’t be afraid to reach out to other businesses in the area. One of the great things about our community is how supportive businesses are of each other. We are all in this together!

It’s no wonder online advertising continues to grow. It’s estimated that the digital advertising market will be $185 billion by 2017 (that’s a nearly 30% share of the total advertising market). Everything digital is trackable and measurable, plus it’s more affordable than other traditional media, which makes it more attractive when your investment really counts.
Engine Marketing (SEM); and Mobile, as well as Social Media and E-mail Marketing. Banner Advertising is attractive and efficient for several reasons. First, it allows you to target a very specific audience. Like television, you pay for the amount of “eyeballs” that see your ad. Banner advertising is sold on a CPM, or “Cost-per-thousand” basis. And like television, banner ads are good for broad awareness against a specific target. But beware: banner advertising has a very low click through rate (people who see your ad click on it and arrive at your website). So banner ads do great for branding efforts – getting your name out there – but don’t always result in more time at your website. I’m surprised when I learn of brands that are not utilizing Search marketing. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the lifeblood of any digital advertising effort. Search is like the yellow pages and newspaper ads of yesterday. When customers need to find something, your business must be there. I advise our clients to have an “always on” strategy with SEM; there is never a time with search engine marketing when you shouldn’t be making it easier for customers to find you. SEM is

very successful campaign has its roots in ROI (Return On Investment): “What did we spend and what did we get?” (That’s the science part). But while the numbers are critical, it’s impossible – and incorrect – to measure ROI only by the numbers because they don’t truly give you the “emotional value” (The “art”). It was the mid-1990s when I learned the importance of ROI. It was pre-internet, pre-Facebook, pre-Google analytics so we had no concrete metrics of how many people were “served” the ad, no measure of the number of people that “engaged” with the ad. All we had were weekly sales numbers – and quantitative research, which usually lagged behind by many months to provide any real-time feedback. Without any concrete metrics to measure, advertising ROI was a “softer” analysis back then; for instance, “How were sales this week?” or “How many shoppers brought in the coupon?” Of course these measures were critical, but it was nearly impossible to tie the advertising tactics to it. Not so today. The variety of advertising channels available to marketers has never been as plentiful or diverse as they are today. From niche print publications and targeted email to social media platforms like Integra, Twitter and Facebook; from mass-market media like television, to digital display banners, almost everything is measurable. Yet making the choice on the right advertising channel for your business can be tricky. So how do you know what channel is going to give you the best ROI? The answer is in the science. Broadcast television is still the place where you can reach a massmarket and expose more people to your message faster than anything else. But it remains difficult to measure return specific from the airing of a spot – aside from how many people you reached and what kind of buzz, if any, was generated. That’s why it’s a great way to introduce a new flavor of chip to the millions of people watching the Super Bowl, but it’s not as realistic for brands with more modest budgets. Since everything digital is inherently trackable and measurable, online advertising continues to grow. Internet advertising can include a variety of tactics, including Banner Advertising; Digital Video; Search

with digital, it’s all measurable, which gets us back to the question about ROI. If we are able to make all of these intelligent choices about our marketing based on quantifiable metrics, why isn’t every campaign a home run? That’s where the “Art” comes in.
attractive because it’s sold on a CPC (cost-per-click) basis, which means you only pay for the advertising that gets clicked. The most critical aspect of a successful SEM campaign is tight management and close monitoring of your “key words.” You need to finesse your key words so you are spending your budget wisely on those words that more closely target exactly who you are seeking. One digital advertising approach that is growing even faster than search is Digital Video. Online video ad revenue will reach nearly $5 billion in 2016. Video ads have and average click-through rate (CTR) of 1.84%, the highest click-through rate of all digital ad formats. Finally, the growth of the Mobile market is one that cannot be ignored. According to Nielson, “Americans in 2013 reported owning an average of FOUR digital devices” – which includes HDTVs, DVRs, PCs, smartphones, tablets and gaming consoles. While TV remains the top “screen,” Nielsen reports “84% of smartphone and tablet owners say they use their devices as second-screens while watching TV at the same time.” However, there is no digital metric that can tell you that you are making an emotional connection. No data point will confirm if you’ve captured the heart of your consumer. That’s where one-on-one interaction is critical. We do focus groups, exit surveys and one-on-one interviews – anything where we can listen to live feedback to better understand how our message is being received. Determining the right mix of media for your marketing effort based on smart and detailed analytics is critical to every effort. But it’s only part of the success of your campaign. Let the “art” and “soul” of your effort have an equal seat at the planning table!
