From Student to CEO The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a groundbreaking program where kids can actually launch real businesses or social movements. These young adults, ages 11-18, are doing the real work of launching a business or as we like to say, “from Student to CEO.” The unique, 21-week YEA! curriculum guides students in grades 6-12 through the process of starting a real business, including business plan development, pitching an investor panel, obtaining funding, launching the venture, managing media campaigns, e-commerce and web development, sales events and trade shows. Students are taught to recognize the power of their ideas and to develop the skills necessary to turn those ideas into meaningful companies. The life skills learned may take them down the road of starting the next Amazon, Netflix, Uber, AirBnb or social programs such as Walk With Sally, Richstone Institute, etc. I always think at the end of the 21-weeks and seeing how these young adults have developed, this world is going to be OK. tomorrow’s business owners today By Rachel Thomas The most common reaction I get to that elevator pitch is, “I wish that had been around when I was a kid.” The second most common reaction is, “I should probably take that class. I learned how to do this the hard way.”
THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY IS A PROJECT-BASED LEARNING PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN 6TH-12TH GRADE THAT CULMINATES IN THE STUDENT AS THE CEO OF A FUNCTIONING AND LEGAL BUSINESS.
This national program, run through Chambers of Commerce throughout the country, begins with idea generation and market research, and then moves to business building as students write business plans with the help of local professionals, and then culminates with networking and public speaking experience as they present their businesses to local investors. I recruit speakers and mentors everywhere I go. On my dog walks, at parties, as I shop in local businesses — sometimes I stop in to new businesses under the guise of shopping just to check out the entrepreneur. Community investors sponsor the program and the investment money is pooled together. These investors work together to determine the most viable businesses based on the business’s presentation at our Investor Panel event, and then also chooses the strongest student and idea to compete nationally against other winners. This seed money students receive provides an opportunity to begin manufacturing, advertising, and taking products to market, all in accordance with their business plan. One of the best aspects of this program is that every student who competes in the Investor Panel receives funding. And then their investment money is carefully watched over by the Chamber, who distributes it only for expenses listed in the business plan. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy has me thinking differently than I used to. After three successful programs in two and a half years, I think like a business person when I’m not thinking like an English teacher. I’ve been an English teacher for 25 years, 18 of which have been at Manhattan Beach Middle School. One of my favorite aspects of this program is that I get to see former students

as high schoolers, and watch them grow and develop in a whole new way. What I’ve discovered is that we are teaching these students life skills. They learn to recognize opportunities and to create them. They learn the value of things, and then learn how to deal with money as they consider pricing and cost of whatever is around them. They budget, both short and long term. They come to recognize overhead costs and the value of their time. They learn that successful businesspeople don’t create a business and then sit around waiting for the cash to roll in. They learn to work, to commit to a project and see it through to the end.
Several YEA-born businesses are in the local community. Perhaps you’ve sampled Camilia Rowshan’s NEOChia chia seed pudding, or bought candied pecans from Austin Koehler’s G.O. Nuts, which can be found in local coffee shops, independent grocers, and at Farmer’s Markets. You may know of a student who takes video chat piano lessons from Nisha Chatwani’s Crescendo to Success. Perhaps you bought a t-shirt from Ryan Ulrich’s Sand Dollar Surf Co., or from Beck Cherry’s Cherry Industries. You may have seen Noa Duke Frank at the Hometown Fair; he has his own booth selling his hand planes.

On a national level, there are many success stories of YEA grads. Rachel Zietz, for example, the CEO of Gladiator Lacrosse, started in 2012 in the Boca Raton, FL class when she was 12 years old. She made over $1 million last year. Taylor Rosenthal is a 14 year old who was offered $30 million in 2016 for RecMed, the product he designed through a YEA program in Alabama. He turned it down because he thinks he can get more. Niamani Knight, a high school junior from Santa Clarita, CA who realized at age 13 that many of her peers didn’t have the exposure to the skills that make a person successful in the long term, so she created a traveling convention called S.T.R.E.A.M. that that connects businesses, schools, and active learning opportunities with students. Recently her convention came through Long Beach. Many others have used the YEA program as a stepping stone, building their business understanding, leadership skills, and personal networks as they learn how to connect with entrepreneurs and business leaders across the South Bay. They take the skills they learn to college and beyond.
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is project-based learning at its best — the projects themselves are student driven, based on what students see as a need in their own lives. Students are supported both with regular lessons that provide them with the vocabulary, conceptual background needed, and a business plan template, and then that learning is reinforced by local speakers, mentors, and business people who recognize the value of both business learning and of innovation. The most common reaction we get after adults get to know our students through participation in this program is “I hope you ask me back next year!” Parents marvel at the maturity and responsibility the students develop. The students and their work are impressive and inspiring, and watching the students develop from kids to businesspeople is miraculous.

I also got to see what everyone else was creating. I got to see how their brains work by seeing what ideas they came up with. But I don't know how I would've succeeded if it weren't for the awesome mentors that we were able to learn from for six weeks. These mentors each had something in common with your product and they helped solve so many things that I couldn't do by myself. Lastly, I was fortunate enough to win the local investor panel this year which lead me to an all-expenses-paid trip to New York, where I was really proud to represent Manhattan Beach.
Before joining the YEA program I had no clue what entrepreneurship was and how to start a business. With the YEA program I have learned so many new things. I now see daily problems as business opportunities. The YEA taught me so much that I can now use in the present and future. One thing that I learned how to do was to create a business plan. This was a skill that I had no clue that I could ever accomplish and with the YEA program I did. I realized that as I get older, I will need to be able to know how to create business plans. Another amazing thing that the YEA program provided my class and I with were guest speakers. Guest speakers helped me grow my ideas for my business. It was so cool to see all of their ideas. They helped me learn how to make my business better. Now when I see how their businesses have grown it makes me confident about mine. I used to be nervous and not the best at presenting, but the YEA program switched that around. Now I have improved and I can stand up in front of any audience to give a speech. One thing that I will always remember are the friends I made. The YEA program helped me establish amazing friends that I could connect with. Without the program I wouldn't have been introduced to the people whom I now have a good relationship with.

I came into YEA knowing that I wanted to create a business, but I had doubts about my skills and resources to do so. The YEA program gave me the tools I needed to start my 501c(3) non-profit organization, Kindheartedly, at the age of 15. Throughout the year-long program, I learned about marketing, networking, how
to write a business plan, how to make budgets and how to write press releases. By the end of the year, I learned so much that I secured seed funding at the investor panel that I then used to start my business. Now, at 16 years old, I am the President and CEO of Kindheartedly. Our vision is to provide girls entering the foster care system with a Kind Kit containing a new outfit, basic fashion and grooming essentials and inspiring, self-esteem boosting items to help ease their transition. Kindheartedly’s vision is to empower girls to be the best representation of themselves. We are a volunteer-driven organization that counts on surrounding communities and donors to provide resources for foster youth. We are giving girls the opportunity to explore and embrace their personal style and creativity through fashion. Cultivating good grooming practices and their own sense of style will empower girls through knowing that they can look good and feel good. Girls in foster care are on a journey filled with changes in their family life, living situation, possibly a change of schools, and adolescent body changes. Developing their own look will help them appreciate their own individuality and empower them from the outside, in.

AUSTIN KOEHLER, 17 I think that the YEA program is amazing! It is very informative and truly helps to prepare its students for the real world of business. The program has several guest speakers throughout the school-year-long course. It was definitely worth being part of this program. It helped me outside of my business by allowing me to realize that I don't have to have a college degree to start a business. I can be young and still do things that matter. I can invest in stocks, I can start a business, I can do so much more than I thought possible before. The program also helped give me more confidence in myself and my ability to make connections with other people. I would tell upcoming students to be prepared for a lot of fun and learning. You will have teachers experienced in business. Make sure you are ready to work hard for an idea you love. You will start your own business and are given the tools to be successful at such a young age. Lead our generation to a new, better future of business!

The YEA program is a program that should be in every school district in the country. I think it gives kids a sense of finance, business, and entrepreneurship which will come in handy for the rest of their life. Even if they don't stick with their business, the knowledge they've gained will serve them well. The program has most definitely helped outside of business. The two most prominent skills I improved on in the program are public speaking and networking. These are two essential skills I have taken advantage of inside and outside of my business. If you are a student thinking about joining, absolutely go for it. You meet awesome people, grow invaluable skills that allow you creative freedom, and have an opportunity to do something outstanding.
