Welcome 2017 San Pedro Community Guide & Business Directory

DESTINATION: SAN PEDRO

to the

The mission of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce is to promote, support, and advocate the interests of the business community. The Chamber is a non-profit membership organization founded in 1906 and our vision and goals have remained constant – to make San Pedro a better place to live, work, and visit. Under the leadership of the Board of Directors and our dedicated staff, the Chamber works to create and implement programs that meet the needs of our more than 400 members. We focus on business advocacy, education and economic development. The Chamber is proud each year to host a Leadership Series featuring elected officials and policy makers. In 2017, we will host Supervisor Janice Hahn, and Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino’s State of the District. These forums are designed to engage leaders in dialogue on issues that are of importance to business. We have implemented a new Small Business Roundtable for 2017, bringing experts directly to the business community to provide technical help in the areas of finance, accounting, and sales. A new Non-Profit Collaborative has been established to support the vibrant non-profit community in San Pedro. We will continue the popular Munch and Learn Luncheon Series designed to provide information on best business social media and marketing practices, and our Economic and Development Committee meets monthly to review and make recommendations on legislation and policies that impact our business community. The Chamber strongly supports and encourages tourism in our area to promote our economy. San Pedro is a destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and our staff works daily to provide visitors with information on attractions, shopping and services. With the addition of LA Fleet Week over Labor Day weekend, the Southern CA Boat Show in September of 2017, and the ringing of the Korean Bell on the 4th of July in honor of our Nation’s birthday, we are becoming known as destination for unique events which help our local economy. For over 100 years, the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce has worked to promote business and our community. The San Pedro Community Guide and Business Directory is designed to provide you with a guide to the best in San Pedro including shopping, services and attractions. It also features a listing of our members who work to make San Pedro a great place to live and do business. We hope you enjoy using it!

Inaugural LA Fleet Week Highlighted by Arley Baker, Senior Director, Communications, Port of Los Angeles If you were anywhere in the San Pedro area over the Labor Day holiday this year, there was no question: The Navy is in town! The first-ever LA Fleet Week welcomed the USS America, the USS Wayne E. Meyer and US Coast Guard Cutter Active to the LA Waterfront in San Pedro, along with their more than 1,500 members of the US Sea Services. The reception from our Harbor community couldn’t have been better. The week-long celebration kicked into high gear with a super-sized First Thursday organized by the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District. Thousands of visiting military and local community members attended and everyone enjoyed the music, food and camaraderie.

LA Fleet Week ship tours were open to the public Friday through Monday and ultimately more than 200,000 people attended the event with 30,000 touring the visiting vessels and an additional 16,000 touring the Battleship IOWA Museum. The main event extended across the World Cruise Center and Battleship IOWA footprint and included STEM exhibits, military canine demonstrations, a Marine field medical unit, Coast Guard Sea-Air-Rescue demonstrations, live music and a 3-day schedule of aircraft flyovers down the main channel. The local community and businesses truly embraced the event and our uniformed guests, and one thing we heard over and over again from the Sailors, Marines and Coastguardsmen was, “I

couldn’t spend a dime of my own money for a meal or a drink!” Every military representative we spoke to, including Vice Admiral Nora Tyson, was overwhelmed by the success of the event and the community hospitality toward the Sailors, Marines and Coastguardsmen in and around the LA Waterfront area. A number of businesses reported record-breaking sales and several establishments became favorite hang-outs for the men and women in uniform.

A total of 15 Community Relations volunteer outings were organized for visiting Sailors and Marines, including a 2-day Habitat for Humanity home-building project, 2 mornings at the LA Food Bank and St. Francis Center in downtown LA, and visits to Children’s Hospital of Orange, Ronald McDonald house and US Vets Village in Long Beach. Sailors and Marines went on an additional 10 to 12 “fun excursions” that included Universal Studios, Medie-

val Times, the LA Zoo, Dodgers & Galaxy games, the Call of Duty XP convention, “The Price is Right” game show – where a sailor won a car – and a nearly exclusive military audience for a taping of the “Late, Late Show with James Corden.” LA Fleet Week was a success not only for the numbers of visitors it attracted, but also for the many strong partnerships that were formed to pull it all off. Organizing a volunteer corps of dozens, the San Pedro Chamber worked closely with the Port of LA, Mayor’s Office, PBID, USO, Battleship IOWA and many others to ensure that everyone involved with Fleet Week experienced a San Pedro that they want to visit again.

Mark your calendars for LA Fleet Week 2017: September 1 – 4

ARTS in San Pedro MURALS

San Pedro Goes Public with Art For decades, artists and creative types have been answering the siren’s call of San Pedro’s coastal views and seaside amenities. As a result, San Pedro has become a thriving arts town full of artist’s studios, galleries, theater companies and live music venues. San Pedro is home to such esteemed artist’s groups as the Angels Gate Cultural Center, the Golden State Pops Orchestra, Shakespeare by the Sea/Little Fish Theater, the San Pedro City Ballet and the National Watercolor Society. Even the monthly First Thursday Art Walk has grown into such a beloved event that it’s now a staple in local nightlife. Art has become so ingrained into the culture and identity of San Pedro Misty Copeland that it’s no wonder that it has begun to spill out into the town’s public spaces. With canvases ranging from utility boxes to building facades, public art displays have been popping up in private and public spaces all over town— some showcasing the unexpected beauty of San Pedro while others celebrate its brightest stars.

UTILITY BOXES

Advocating for public art is a core mission of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District (SPWAD) organization. Recently, SPWAD collaborated with the City of Los Angeles Council District 15, the Port of Los Angeles and Clean San Pedro to turn utility boxes into public art pieces. The

22

artists that best depicted the theme of “Unexpected Pedro” were given a stipend to paint their designs on boxes across the downtown area and along the waterfront. The result was 11 colorful works of eye-catching art that highlight San Pedro’s unique beauty.

San Pedro has long been known for its strong local identity and murals have always seemed like the best medium to tell the world just who you are and what you hold dear. In the last couple of years, San Pedro has added thousands of square feet of public art thanks to some new large scale murals and the private property owners who offered up their walls for these artistic endeavors. In 2014, the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival left its mark on San Pedro with ‘Elder Gods,’ a sponsored mural by Oakland-based artist Skinner. The following year, San Pedro honored hometown hero and ballet superstar Misty Copeland with a giant four panel mural by Kelcey Fisher (KFiSH) along the side of the San Pedro City Ballet building. Also in 2015, Rainbow Services commissioned local artist Julie Bender to cover the facade of their service center with a tile mosaic mural of a mother mermaid and her child. San Pedro will kick off 2017 with the completion of another mural project in the downtown area, through a collaboration between SPWAD, Los Angeles Council District 15 and Department of Cultural Affairs. The mural by Mexico City artist Luis Sanchez will revitalize the long neglected Lilyan Fierman Walkway, adjacent to the Warner Grand Theatre, with images that creatively highlight the performing arts. With the completion of major revitalization projects like the San Pedro Public Market and AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, the future of San Pedro’s public art renaissance looks bright and colorful.

EDUCATION on the Waterfront:

What is Old is New Again

by Captain Bruce Heyman, Executive Director, Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI)

As a teenager, I always looked forward to getting up very early to work with my grandfather in his little factory. He taught me that “just because something is old doesn’t mean it isn’t any good anymore.” I’ve carried that throughout my entire life. In fact, when something breaks in our house and is condemned to the recycling bin by my wife, I can usually be found in the garage repairing it before I am instructed to place it back into the recycling bin. At LAMI, we are personifying this philosophy by not putting any repairable items into the recycling bin. This is the reason I wrote this article. We are incredibly excited about the progress of the San Pedro Public Market but, when we

24

learned that the long abandoned “Building G” adjacent to the Southern Pacific cut at Berth 73 was slated to be knocked down, we started thinking: What is old COULD be new again. After meetings with the landlord (the Port of Los Angeles), the developers of the San Pedro Public Market, and the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, we were ecstatic to receive unanimous agreement with our vision. A year later, through the hard work of our staff, volunteers and an awesome donor, a blighted area that was long dormant and written off as a city asset, has been transformed into a beehive of useful activity. What is old is new again. We are very proud that we are the first element of the San Pedro Public Market. Starting in 1999 and continuing through 2003, Los Angeles Maritime Insti-

tute and hundreds of volunteers from the community built the two 110’ tall ships Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson in what is now the Downtown Harbor, and we did it in plain view: attracting thousands of visitors to the waterfront each month. Building G and the adjacent yard space will allow us to return to these boat building roots and will shortly become the infrastructure that we use to complete the historic Swift of Ipswich – our third vessel that has been out of the water undergoing extensive restoration. We plan to bring her home to San Pedro and give our community the opportunity to be part of maritime history! In keeping with “what is old is new again,” members of the community show up every Saturday for a 0900 muster to bring Building G back to life. Some are skilled craftspeople; others are just willing to get their hands dirty because they believe in our mission. (By the way, if you are interested in helping, please email volunteercoordinator@lamitopsail.org or call 310-833-6055). But this is only one use of our new infrastructure. CONTINUED

As my good friend Amy Grat of ITEP told me, there are on the order of 140,000 good paying maritime-related jobs that are going to become available as the existing workforce ages out and retires. A good portion of those jobs are right here in our harbor community. These are not, in most cases, jobs that require a four-year degree. However, that does not mean they do not require some training and skills. What is old is new again. When I was in middle school and later high school, I benefitted from drafting class, metal shop and woodshop. My guess is some of you did as well. As I look back on the hundred or so classes that I’ve taken throughout my life, I believe that those three classes had a disproportionately larger impact on me than any of the others. However, almost all of our schools throughout our nation have eliminated shops and most vocational training related to the trades. In partnership with the Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAHS), we are actively working to address this challenge and make the trades new again. We are in our third semester of teaching boat building and boat operations classes. In both of these classes, high school juniors and

seniors are exposed to tools and working with their hands while reinforcing that the theoretical concepts they learn in their traditional classrooms really are applicable in the real world. We look forward to 2017 as we celebrate twenty-five years of empowering youth to discover their greater potential aboard tall ships at sea where youth become part of a “real” working crew. Learning by doing is a way of life at LAMI, and just as we teach students how to work together and problem solve at sea, we are challenging them to re-think the world they live in and see the old as something that can be made new. San Pedro, a safe, clean community

ANGEL DIBILIO/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

OMMUNITY

We’re fortunate to have four law enforcement organizations actively working in a collaborative way to ensure the safety of our community – along with state-of-the-art fire and emergency departments. In addition to our Los Angeles city services, the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District (PBID) provides public safety ambassadors, street sweeping, sidewalk and alley cleaning, graffiti removal, tree trimming and business development. Formed in 2008, the PBID’s goal is to provide a district that fosters business development, expanded retail sales, ownership of residential real estate and tourism in a clean, safe environment for Downtown San Pedro. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Harbor Division Located at the busiest port in the Western Hemisphere, the Harbor Community Police Station serves as a beacon, ensuring safe passage for all those who live and work in the area. Dedicated in April 2009 on John S. Gibson Boulevard, the new facility is visible from the 110 Freeway at Channel Street. Housed there are a range of public servants including many community volunteers as well as the officers whose mission it is “to help make this community a safer place to live and work.” Los Angeles Port Police One of few police forces in the nation exclusively dedicated to 24-hour port activities, the Port Police are responsible for patrol and surveillance of the Port and neighboring harbor-area communities. Highly regarded among specialized law enforcement agencies, Port Police officers patrol the waterfront, landside as well on the water, by boat, helicopter, automobile and bicycle. These California peace officers enforce federal, state and local public safety statutes in addition to environmental and maritime safety regulations. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Under the auspices of the County of Los Angeles, the Sheriff’s Department provides law enforcement services to a small, unincorporated area in San Pedro. In addition

to specialized services, such as the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation, International Liaison and Employee Support Services, the Department is divided into three patrol divisions with officers constantly on the alert to ensure public safety.

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) They are not “everyday heroes” – they are extraordinary heroes, every day. The LAFD is a “full-spectrum life-safety agency” that protects the more than four million residents of America’s second largest city. Here in San Pedro, there are six fire stations, spread among our neighborhoods and at portside. Last year, the men and women of the LAFD responded 464,416 times to come to the aid of their neighbors in need. Property-Owners Business Improvement District (PBID) Security Ambassadors A key PBID service is to provide high profile ambassadors, who are also problem solvers for San Pedro’s Historic Waterfront District .These Security Ambassadors patrol the District and serve as liaisons among merchants and restaurants, as well as entertainment and arts venues. The Ambassadors work closely with local law enforcement agencies to guarantee a welcoming and safe environment for visitors, shoppers and residents alike. Clean San Pedro Separate from and in addition to official City services, Clean San Pedro patrols the streets

six days a week, looking to pick up trash and debris, pull weeds and remove graffiti from public places around town. A 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, Clean San Pedro provides a two-pronged attack to revitalize the area in San Pedro referred to as the Pacific Corridor. This includes a volunteer effort to assist in community clean-ups and a follow-up by Clean San Pedro’s full-time cleaning crew. Go to their website, www.cleansan-pedro.org to make a donation.

Taste of San Pedro

A

San Pedro is a community that prides itself on its storied work ethic, hometown feel and diverse cultural heritage. This strong sense of identity is infused into nearly every aspect of life here, but nowhere is it more evident or celebrated than in the eclectic mix of restaurants

and dining experiences to be had in this homey harbor town. To really get a feel for what makes this community a hidden gem, just sit back and grab yourself a Taste of San Pedro. From its inception, San Pedro has had a symbiotic relationship with the

sea. Early San Pedrans pulled their sustenance from the ocean’s bounty, and soon one of it’s famed industries was born – fishing. San Pedro is rich with delicious seafood options and experiences. If you’re looking for fresh seafood, there’s nothing like handpicking your meal from the day’s catch at the world famous San Pedro Fish Market and enjoying it on the patio overlooking the waterfront. In the mood for more of a sit-down experience? Look no further than the 22nd Street Landing, near the marina, where you can watch the fishing boats float by on their way out for another catch. Hard work, like fishing, has always been a tie that binds San Pedran’s and, luckily, there has always been plenty to find along the waterfront. The hope of a better life through hard work is what attracted San Pedro’s earlier generations, many of them recent immigrants. This diverse ethnic mix is still alive in San Pedro’s culinary options. There are authentic Mexican favorites like the Original Las Brisas and Taxco. Get a CONTINUED

PORTS O’CALL RESTAURANT CELEBRATES 55 YEARS

The Ports O’Call Restaurant is celebrating 55 years of magnificent business along San Pedro’s waterfront. Now, the restaurant that spawned an entire seaside village attraction looks to the future and the new San Pedro Public Market. When the Ports O’Call Restaurant opened in 1961, the United States was in the throes of what some might call tiki fever. Americans were obsessed with living on the beach where their cares and woes stayed far off shore, beyond the horizon. It’s no wonder then that an atmospheric restaurant that brought the south seas to the waterfront became an instant success. Polynesian-style design influences ran throughout the new dining establishment. Before patrons even reached the front door, they had to cross over a bridge past a sampan floating in a lagoon out front. Once inside, diners were spirited away to a tropical locale with thatched grass panels, bamboo accented furniture and colorful glass buoys in nets hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant quickly became the favorite locale for Los Angeles society to dine and hold their luncheons and galas. Fifty-five years later, very little has changed— except for the decor. While the seashell lamps that light the main dining room are the only tell-tale signs of the restaurant’s tropical past, the Ports O’Call Restaurant

you’re having a business lunch or celebrating a special occasion. Longtime Executive Chef Ruben Guerrero keeps the menus continuously updated with new recipes featuring the highest quality meats and sustainable seafood. Be sure not to miss two very unique and award winning experiences to be had at Ports O’Call; the Sunday Brunch and Happy Hour, both being selected multiple times as the South Bay’s BEST. Every Sunday you can enjoy a champagne brunch that includes some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes and a complimentary harbor tour on Spirit Cruises. Come back for happy hour on the patio where you

can sip cocktails and listen to live music as you watch ships as big as cities float up and down the main channel. As construction gets underway on the highly anticipated new San Pedro Public Market, scheduled to be completed by 2020, you will see exciting new changes to the LA Waterfront. During construction, there will be changes in hours of operation, and parking for our waterfront restaurants and business. Please check www.lawaterfront.org for the latest updates on San Pedro’s LA Waterfront.

remains one of the premiere restaurant and banquet facilities in the Los Angeles area. In recent years, the restaurant has also become a popular wedding venue, equipped with three outdoor venues and a wedding gazebo. Dining at Ports O’Call is still an atmospheric experience with its floor-to-ceiling view of the harbor’s main channel. Day or night you are almost guaranteed an amazing view whether www.sanpedrochamber.com

taste of exotic Morocco at Babouch as belly dancers put on a show. For good Greek food, look no further than Niko’s in downtown. And if you’re in the mood for pasta, Rafaello’s will feed you to your heart’s content! San Pedro’s pizzerias, while very much Italian, really do deserve a classification of their own. In San Pedro, good pizza is considered an art form. Lucky for us, we’re home to some of the masters like Buono’s Pizzeria, Big Nick’s and Philie B’s who promises a ‘Slice of San Pedro’ in every pie. There’s nothing like a hearty meal and cold pint after a hard day’s work and San Pedro has two of the best pubs in the area holding court in downtown. On 7th Street, you’ll find the only authentic Victorian pub in Los Angeles, the Whale and Ale, where you can toast your mates with a pint over a plate of some of the best fish and chips in the colonies. A block over, on 6th Street, the San Pedro Brewing Company serves up grown-up pub fare with glasses of their signature craft beer brewed on the premises. Hard work begets quality as much as heritage breeds legacy and you can find both in the fine dining establishments in San Pedro. The Trani family has been feeding San Pedrans for nearly a century. At J. Trani’s Ristorante, the latest generation,

Executive Chef Dustin Trani, masterfully blends old favorites and new flavors to craft culinary magic. At Neil’s Pasta & Seafood Grill, the onus is placed on quality and ambience. The atmosphere lends itself to a perfect romantic evening paired with an equally decadent meal. San Pedro’s homeyness is due to the fact that so many have called this tiny port town home for generations upon generations, since those early job-seekers found its shores. San Pedrans love it here and they love each other. Stop into any popular breakfast spot, like the Omelette and Waffle Shop, whose tagline is ‘A place where old friends meet,‘ and you’d be quick to find a group of longtime friends catching up. Enjoying the company of family and friends is important and there are so many options of places to do it in San Pedro. Favorites include chatting over a cup of chai tea at Hojas Tea House, being bad with a small coffee and a giant cinnamon roll at Sirens Java & Tea or letting loose with a round of wine tasting at Off the Vine. San Pedro has it all, from casual to classy and everything in between. This has only been a small sampling of the great places in town to grab a bite or beverage. If you’d really like to get to know San Pedro, come on down and find the right taste for you. You won’t be disappointed!

ONE MORE THOUGHT

AltaSea Cited as LA Waterfront Game Changer By Jenny Cornuelle Krusoe, Executive Director, AltaSea

f you take a stroll along the San Pedro waterfront, you might not realize how much is going on behind the scenes in the old 19143 warehouses locals call City Dock 1. AltaSea, the world class urban marine research, business incubator and educational facility, is poised to convert the 35-acre campus into a nexus of laboratories and classrooms, exhibition spaces and berths for research vessels. In the past year, AltaSea formed new partnerships with key Blue Technology and Sustainable Aquaculture organizations such as Blue Robotics and Catalina Sea Ranch. We continue to grow our relationship with Dr. Robert Ballard’s Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) and his Exploration Vessel Nautilus. Our Community STEM Education Program is the latest example of this collaboration: together AltaSea and OET are bringing ocean education to Los Angeles Unified School District students by live streaming information directly from the world’s ocean floor into classrooms. AltaSea is also proud to be the winter home for Dr. Ballard’s operations and we are excited to support his goal to build the west coast version of his Inner Space Center at AltaSea for all to learn and enjoy. Partnerships like these reflect our mission to accelerate scientific collaboration, facilitate job creation and inspire the next generation for a more sustainable ocean. As a result, we’re

creating an unparalleled network of supporters, scientists and community partners to help create and sustain AltaSea’s legacy for years to come. In addition, we have been busy with the following accomplishments:  AltaSea unveiled the stunning architectural renderings for its 35-acre “campus for innovation.” The campus, designed by renowned firm Gensler, has already won the Los Angeles Business Council’s Conceptual Design Award, Westside Urban Forum citation and Architectural Digest named AltaSea one of the “most exciting new projects” in Los Angeles.  AltaSea and the Port of Los Angeles received a $3 million grant from the Economic Development Administration for infrastructure improvements that will support the work of AltaSea’s current partners, attract new partners and facilitate AltaSea’s vision of how these businesses and organizations will collaborate and share resources.  AltaSea took possession and began renovation of the first 80,000 square feet of warehouse and wharf space for the founding Sustainable Aquaculture and Blue Tech Clusters.  AltaSea and Boeing have executed a planning Memorandum of Understanding and we are working to assess opportunities to support Boeing’s Echo Voyager vessel, including the possibility of a phased occupancy here with a small footprint by the end of 2016’s calendar year.  Dr. Sandra Whitehouse was named AltaSea’s Chief Scientific Officer, bringing her highly respected Global Oceans expertise to the organization. Moving forward, we are poised to build on these achievements in what will surely be an exciting year ahead for AltaSea. In 2017, we will launch new science and education programs with our partners, put shovels in the ground for the Research, Education and Business Clusters and welcome even more world-class leaders in science, education and business to the AltaSea community.
