OFFICIAL VISITOR’S GUIDE 2018-2019 The Navy Fleet Returns for LA Fleet Week 2018 Labor Day WeekendAugust 31 to September 3, 2018

If you were anywhere in the San Pedro area over the 2017 Labor Day holiday last year, there was no question: San Pedro was once again a Navy town! More than 1,500 members of the U.S. Sea Services visited San Pedro and the reception from the Harbor community was amazing! A welcome party open to the public and numerous events, including a burger wars event, were open to the public during the week of events and activities. LA Fleet Week ship tours will be open again to the public Friday through Monday. Information will be posted on lafleetweek.com. Register now for updates and ticket information. Last year, approximately 200,000 people attended the event. Local community and businesses truly welcomed our uniformed guests, and one thing we heard repeatedly from the Sailors, Marines and Coastguardsmen was, “I couldn’t spend a dime of my own money for a meal or a drink!” Military representatives were overwhelmed by the community hospitality toward the Sailors, Marines and Coastguardsmen in and around the Harbor community and the LA Waterfront area. LA Fleet Week is a success not only for the number of visitors it attracts, but also for the many strong partnerships that were formed to pull it all off. Organizing a volunteer corps of dozens, the San Pedro Chamber worked closely with the Port of Los Angeles, Mayor’s Office, PBID, USO, Battleship USS IOWA and many others to ensure that everyone involved with Fleet Week experienced a San Pedro that they want to visit again. lafleetweek.com

LANDMARKS AND VISTAS

Look up, then look around: Explore our museums, architecture, port infrastructure, lighthouses, tide pools and cliffs. It’s the stuff of movie sets, world travel and, with the right timing of a Pacific sunset or under a full moon, maybe your greatest romance. The Korean Friendship Bell at Angels Gate Park This park offers spectacular cliffside views of Catalina Island, world-bound cruise and container ships, and SoCal yachters. Bring your picnic lunch and a basketball for pick-up game near the ample parking lot. Read more about the Korean Friendship Bell on our last page, About our Cover. Three Lighthouses San Pedro provides safe harbor with a welcome from two historic lighthouses, Angels Gate at the breakwater’s tip, and Point Fermin, where the first lighthouse keepers were women. Toward Palos Verdes is yet another historic lighthouse, Point Vincente, and its Interpretive Center. Three Beaches and an Aquarium Cabrillo Beach offers two beaches, one a calm inner harbor, the other a sand and high-rock coastline stroll. Royal Palms beach attracts surfing spectators and tide pool explorers. With picnic tables and landscaping to enhance the raw salt air, you’ll delight in surf, cliffs and breathtaking sea views. The Coast Guard, Memories of a Japanese Fishing Village Throughout your visit, you’ll be looking over at Terminal Island, the hub of Port commerce. There’s more to discover if you take the Vincent Thomas Bridge to Terminal Island. You’ll want to pause at the Historic Japanese Fishing Village Memorial. Interpretive displays and sculpture give you a sense of Terminal Island as a fishing village. The US Coast Guard Base, San Pedro, features a well-deserved better view with the white houses and green grass yards at the tip of Terminal Island, 1001 South Seaside Avenue. This compound may look familiar: the 1992 film “A Few Good Men” filmed scenes here.

OFFICIAL VISITOR’S GUIDE 2018-2019 WALK AND WANDER Point Fermin Lighthouse Point Fermin Park 807 W. Paseo del Mar pointferminlighthouse.org Built in 1874, this palatial, stick-style Victorian lighthouse is the oldest navigational light on the West Coast. Surrounded by the classic seaside vistas of Point Fermin Park, the inviting lighthouse easily inspires a picnic or tide pooling. Tours are available Tuesdays through Sundays. Angels Gate-Los Angeles Harbor Light The Gateway to the Port of Los Angeles (not accessible) San Pedro’s signal to returning seafarers is the Romanesque tower that has cast its light since 1913 from the harbor’s two-mile-long rock breakwater. Vessels pass the 73-foot-high lighthouse as they enter or leave San Pedro Bay and the Port of Los Angeles. For an elevated view of the lighthouse, the bay’s marinas and the port’s docks, cranes and main channel, try the telescope turnout on South Gaffey near 36th Street. Enjoy a closer look from Cabrillo Beach, bayside and pier. You’ll soon discover that “portside” San Pedro is beautifully situated for a peek at the dramatic spectacle of global commerce. Korean Friendship Bell Angels Gate Park • 3601 S. Gaffey Street laparks.org, 10am to 6pm daily In 1976, the people of the Republic of Korea presented to the people of Los Angeles this master-crafted, six-ton ceremonial bell and pavilion. Synchronized to lights and music – from American standards to international selections that reflect San Pedro’s diverse heritage – the fountains provide beautiful water shows along the Cruise Ship Promenade. Downtown Harbor lawaterfront.org The Downtown Harbor cuts into approximately 1.2 acres of waterfront land along Harbor Boulevard between Fire Station 112 to the north and the LA Maritime Museum to the south. This harbor inlet has space for vessels to dock and approximately 700 linear feet of promenade. PAPPY’S IN HISTORIC DOWNTOWN SAN PEDRO BRINGS IN SEAFOOD LOVERS Greg Morena stakes his claim in Downtown with Pappy’s Seafood by Joshua Stecker

Greg Morena couldn’t take his eyes off it. Two years ago, Morena was standing on the corner of 6th and Centre Streets in Downtown San Pedro, staring intently at the vacant Papadakis Taverna building. He wondered, like many San Pedrans, if that legendary building could become something great again. “I was outside looking at the building trying to make sense of it,” recalls Morena. “You could almost see there were bones beneath it, but you just didn’t know.” The Taverna closed for good in 2010 after nearly 40 years in business. Prior to that, the building housed the town’s first-ever post office and was home to one of San Pedro’s most infamous bars (and brothels!), Tommy (Good Fellow's) Yacht Club Café. After the Taverna closed, the two restaurants that came after, Limani Taverna and Otto Trattoria, couldn’t make it work. Both had leased the building from former Papadakis Taverna owner, John Papadakis, but now the building was for sale, and Morena was looking to buy. “As I’m standing there, this car pulls up to me like a cop would in the middle of the street, and out pops this guy. He walks over, shakes my hand

and asks me if I was interested in the building,” recalls Morena. “He says, ‘Hi, my name is Joe.’ And that’s how I met Councilman Joe Buscaino for the first time. I figured a town where the councilman will pull over and talk to somebody who’s looking at a building is pretty special.” Morena and his wife Yunnie, both from Santa Monica, were looking to expand the family business somewhere close but unique. Yunnie’s parents, both Korean immigrants, started SM Pier Seafood in 1977 on the Santa Monica Pier. The Morenas procured the restaurant in 2013 and re-named it The Albright, after the nautical Albright Knot, to symbolize two generations of the family business coming together. The Albright celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, it is the longest running restaurant on the pier. In addition to the family business, the 40-year-old entrepreneur was also busy in fashion and finance, co-creating several street wear companies and running an accounting firm, and he wanted to break free of them with this new project. “We were looking to expand,” explains Morena. “We went north as far as San Luis Obispo, where we got married, and south as far as San Diego, where my mom lives. But when I found San Pedro, I discovered this character here. There continued on page 22

was nothing quite like it. I somehow felt a connection.” Being in the seafood business, Morena immediately connected to San Pedro’s storied fishing industry roots.

Award-Winning Waterfront Restaurant Serving San Pedro & South Bay Since 1990.

“I’m a huge history buff.” he says, “In my research, I realized San Pedro is home to all these historical families that literally changed the fishing industry. Being in the seafood business, you want to be around people who are successful. And you don’t get more successful than that.”

Confident that the port town was the perfect place to expand his restaurant empire, and hoping to weave his brand into the fabric of San Pedro’s history, Morena went into negotiations with Papadakis and eventually purchased the 5,000-square foot lot for a reported $1.6 million.

Morena knew from the beginning that the building “had to breathe.” He wanted the structure to be stripped down to its “rawest state” to keep the history alive, instead of razing it completely and starting fresh. So, he immediately went to work, peeling back layer after layer of decades of construction, exposing original wood and brick, and discovering hidden treasures. He chose to use the newly uncovered former entrance on 6th Street with the original doors to Tommy’s. The front doors are now an eye-catching red.

What’s Old is New Again Keys in hand, it was time for the Morenas to transform the former Taverna into Pappy’s Seafood. The inspiration for the name is twofold. First, it’s an homage to the Papadakis clan, as “Pappy” was a family nickname, and second, Morena holds the rights to use the Popeye cartoon characters, and Popeye’s father is named Poopdeck Pappy. The creator of Popeye, E. C. Segar, is said to have modeled the character after a sailorman from Santa Monica named Olaf Olsen. Olsen’s sons, Harold and Einar, operated tugboats out of San Pedro. (There’s always a San Pedro connection.)

“Forget About It” Salad

Next to go was the false ceiling, which revealed large wooden beams that stretch the entire length of the restaurant. Then came the discovery of the original high windows that had been covered for decades. “I think the design of the ‘70s and ‘80s was to bring everything in, and over the last decade, we’ve been adapting to reuse everything,” explains Morena. “When I was walking up in the rafters, I noticed these windows that weren’t visible from the outside. When we put the scaffolding up in the front, we began to peel the layers to reveal them.”

San Pedro’s Favorite Italian Eatery for over four decades! From the pizza fashioned from hand kneaded dough, to the homemade sauces, the fresh mozzarella and the gas-fired brick ovens, eating at Buono’s is like dining at a pizzeria in the Old Country. They installed large bay windows that matched the newly discovered high originals, to create a bright, open dining space that also includes a bar top reclaimed from a former restaurant at Ports O’ Call Village. And in keeping with the current trend in public art, two murals by artists Dan Monteavaro/Moncho1929 and Jason Ostro adorn the back of the building. While the public dining room’s rustic design will certainly excite customers, the private dining area, tucked out of sight in an exclusive part of the building and used only for private parties, is most impressive. With room for up to 75 people, this secluded dining space is adorned with memorabilia, photographs, and décor celebrating the history of the port town, with homages to the Papadakis family. The amount of respect the Morenas have shown to not only the history of the building, but also to the history of San Pedro, is impressive. For Morena, he’s been staking his claim in Downtown San Pedro even before construction started on Pappy’s and has earned the support from many of his restaurant neighbors, including James Brown, owner of San Pedro Brewing Company, and Andrew Silber, owner of The Whale & Ale. Both have publicly expressed their excitement for Pappy’s opening. Morena is also on the board of directors for the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District (PBID). It’s evident that he wants to be more than just a downtown business owner, he also wants to improve the economic viability of the area. “The support I’ve received from the business owners in downtown, especially from John [Papadakis] and Councilman Buscaino, has been amazing,” says Morena. “I’m lucky and proud to be here in San Pedro.”

REAL ESTATE ESTATES, HOMES & COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE San Pedro’s real estate market is strong, with a brisk residential and rental business, and commercial property that is ready for either move-in or build-out. The estate business is exciting because so many homes here offer unique, spectacular ocean and mountain vistas. The Los Angeles real estate market has many niche opportunities. San Pedro offers 30-minute drives to LAX. There are new bridges and highway links that ease your commute to downtown Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, even Las Vegas. Why not also live in a port city that takes you on vacation to Catalina Island, or even a world cruise? That same port will ship your business goods worldwide, and receive imports that can be trucked or taken by rail using the most sophisticated logistics services available.

RESIDENTIAL There are historic Victorian Era homes in Vinegar Hill, classic Craftsman’s in Vista del Oro, and modern architecture along the shoreline designed to welcome the sun. You’ll find apartments, condos and lofts with soothing views and lifeaffirming amenities from the Historic Downtown area and into the hills. San Pedro is now in a strong building phase, with several new multi-story apartments set to open in 2020 and beyond. Senior living is also available here, with many community options to choose from. continued on page 28

EDUCATION

Building AltaSea is our Next Step in Building our ‘Education Harbor’ Not long ago, the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce played a key role in establishing the Port of Los Angeles Charter High School. It also championed bringing an urban campus for Marymount University. Both schools are located in downtown San Pedro. Now AltaSea, with its waterfront campus, is giving our local and regional students world class education in ocean research. Scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs and educators are coming together at Alta Sea to solve some of the world’s most pressing issues. A campus of innovation is developing in San Pedro to address climate change, energy supply, and food security.

AQUAFARMING As the global population increases and earth’s resources decrease, it is both a humanitarian challenge and a business opportunity to find ways to feed our planet. AltaSea is already home to Catalina Sea Ranch, the only company in the nation with permits to aquafarm in U.S. federal waters. Where San Pedro was once the nation’s tuna fishing capital, it now has the potential to be the national leader in aquafarming.

30

HOME OF THE NAUTILUS

JOBS AND EDUCATION

AltaSea also focuses on blue technology. Blue tech is centered around the use of underwater drones to better explore the ocean. A key player in AltaSea’s blue tech cluster is Dr. Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the Titanic. Dr. Ballard has made AltaSea his West Coast home for his exploration vessel, the Nautilus.

AltaSea believes that educational opportunities within our community are as vital as jobs. For example, a key factor in establishing Silicon Valley was its proximity to Stanford, a world class university that provided the research and education base for the foundation of the tech cluster.

Dr. Ballard’s educational non-profit, Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) has partnered with AltaSea to create field trips to the Nautilus and to beam the ship’s underwater exploration footage in real-time to classrooms throughout Los Angeles.

And education means higher earnings. Harvard economist Edward Glaeser calculated that the earnings gap grew to nearly 70 percent in the 1990s as opposed to 33 percent in the 1980s between men with 4-year college degrees and high school graduates.

In fact, every partner taking space at AltaSea is required to provide education and/or internship opportunities to area youth. The partners earn rent credits for their educational programs and so the more they provide, the lower their rent.

For more information, visit altasea.org.

PARTNERING WITH THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS AltaSea has also partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the LA Harbor to provide education, training and internships to the club’s College Bound and Career Bound students so that local kids can share in the future prosperity of the Blue Economy. S A N P E D R O WAT E R F R O N T L I F E Melding the industry of World-class shipping operations with small-town San Pedro calls for attentive community services. Clean San Pedro and Security Ambassadors are here to guarantee a welcoming and safe environment for visitors, shoppers and residents. Clean San Pedro is a nonprofit street cleaning program designed to augment official City of Los Angeles services. It’s staffed by a full-time cleaning crew working six days a week. They pick up trash, pull weeds, and remove graffiti from public places. In addition, Clean San Pedro runs volunteer clean-up days to assist the fulltime cleaning crew at selected locations. Donations are welcome at cleansan-pedro.org. Security Ambassadors from the PropertyOwners Business Improvement District (PBID) are the high-profile problem solvers for San Pedro’s Historic Waterfront District. Working closely with local law enforcement agencies, Security Ambassadors patrol the District and serve as liaisons among merchants, restaurants, entertainment and arts venues. 310.303.4471 The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), has six stations, portside and spread throughout San Pedro neighborhoods. Look up FireStatLA for response metrics at each station. The San Pedro The South Bureau Commander is LAFD Deputy Chief Ronnie Villanueva, who was appointed in January 2018. LAFD South Bureau Headquarters are at the San Pedro City Hall, 638 S. Beacon Street. 310.732.4515. LAFD Fire Boat Station 444 S Harbor Boulevard You’ll want to see the LA Fireboat 2 at the portside station, named the Warner L. Lawrence. This powerful boat is designed with the hull of a tug boat, and it’s more powerful than most tugboats worldwide. It shoots water from all directions, which is layman’s terms for this LAFD description: “It is an omni-directional vessel driven by two Voith Schneider Propellers type 26 GII/165AE 45. The Warner Lawrence has the capability to pump up to 38,000 US gallons per minute (2.397 m3/s) up to 400 feet (121.9 m) in the air.” Fireboat 2 is stationed at 444 S Harbor Boulevard. If you don’t see it in action during your visit, you’ll want to look up videos on YouTube. Police and Sheriff Services San Pedro has three types of police service. If you need help, you’ll likely want officers from the City of Los Angeles Police Department Harbor Division. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, under the direction of the County of Los Angeles, serves small, unincorporated parts of San Pedro. Finally, the Los Angeles Port Police patrol the port and neighboring harbor community by water, boat, helicopter, car, and bicycle. These California peace officers enforce federal, state and local public safety statues, in addition to environmental and maritime safety regulations. www.sanpedrochamber.com • 2018

MAKE SAN PEDRO CONNECTIONS THROUGH CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP The San Pedro Chamber of Commerce connects its members to the other people who live and work here. Many businesses are independently run and family-owned. Our Big Business Employers Employment often is driven by big business, and San Pedro’s residents include employees with careers at the Port of Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Unified School District, Phillips 66, Rancho LPG Holdings, Providence LCM Medical Center, and Andeavor (formerly Tesoro Refining & Marketing). Railroads have a strong presence also in San Pedro, including BNSF Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, and the Pacific Harbor Line. Aerospace employers include The Boeing Company and GreenDart. Our Small and Medium Retail and Service Businesses Wherever they work, San Pedro residents rely locally on accountants, architects, attorneys. We all need internet, telephones, computer repairs, physicians, plumbers, electricians, and businesses to process our recycling and trash. Our community’s lifestyle businesses reflect a need for www.sanpedrochamber.com • 2018

landscapers, cleaners, caterers, coffee and tea houses, crafts for home and gifts. We need printers, publishers and news organizations to keep us connected as community members. These are the types of businesses that are our members. Our Nonprofit Collaborative Businesses give back to the community in service to organizations that serve their employees. Our nonprofit collaborative, formed in 2017, is designed to showcase the community-building work of nonprofits in order to strengthen giving. As our program develops, we intend to provide workshops on best practices, including ways to train nonprofit staff and develop volunteer boards.

YOUR MARKETING ARM • San Pedro’s 2 million visitors now have a local welcome: The San Pedro Chamber of Commerce is now the Official LA Visitor Information Center of San Pedro. ONE MORE THOUGHT

THE KOREAN FRIENDSHIP BELL The Korean Bell of Friendship (more commonly called Korean Friendship Bell) is a massive bronze bell housed in a stone pavilion in Angels Gate Park, San Pedro, at the corner of Gaffey and 37th Streets. This section of the park is alternatively called the "Korean-American Peace Park." The Korean Bell of Friendship is a United States bicentennial gift presented by the South Korean government to symbolize friendship between our two countries. The effort was coordinated by Philip Ahn, a Korean-American actor. It was dedicated on October 3, 1976, and declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 187 in 1978.

Since 2010, when the bell underwent a 10-month restoration process, the bell is struck five times a year: • • • • •

New Year's Eve Korean American Day (January 13) The Fourth of July Korean Liberation Day (August 15) Constitution (or Citizenship) Day (September 17)

The bell was also rung on September 11, 2002, to commemorate the first anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City. The bell is modeled after the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok the Great of Silla (also known as the Emille Bell), cast in 771 AD for Bongdeok Temple and now located at the National Museum of Gyeongju. The bell does not have a clapper, instead, it is sounded by striking it with a large wooden log.

The pavilion that houses the bell, known as the Belfry of Friendship, was built by South Korean craftsmen over a period of ten months. Its design is traditional and it is axially symmetric, consisting of a hipped (a.k.a. "pyramidal") roof supported by twelve columns representing the Korean zodiac, each column guarded by a carved animal. The color patterning along the bell's pavilion is known in Korean as dancheong. JOIN US ON THE 4TH OF JULY! The San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Korean Friendship Bell Preservation Committee presents events each year on the 4th of July at 10:30am. We Invite you to join us.
