FROM THE DEAN Greetings to you, Whether you are a diagnosed bibliophile, an occasional reader or have stumbled upon this magazine by chance – I warmly welcome you to another inspired edition of ATLAS: In Pursuit of Curiosity & Culture. This insightful publication is a creative outlet for our creative thinkers, brought to you by our Society & Design Student Association (SDSA). Its purpose is to bring to light various issues, from ‘hot topics’ to alternative ways of thinking and everything in between, to enlighten and entertain. Each New Year brings fresh opportunities and challenges for our students. Amongst the cramming and the lectures and the coffee and (more) cramming, it is important to keep focused on the long term, while simultaneously living in the now! But... How? Prioritize, manage your time wisely, be opportunistic and resourceful. – Yes, these mundane pieces of advice do hold merit! In fact, they are life skills that you will call upon during your entire adult life. If you can refine and master these skills during your time at university, you will leave with them indefinitely. Hard work now will pay future dividends. Balance is key. Mistakes are inevitable. Asking for help is essential. Be sure to make every moment count, create your own lasting memories, and have as much fun as you can along the way. Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali said “Intelligence without Ambition is a Bird without Wings.” In short, a bird without wings is unable to reach its upmost potential, so too without a sincere drive or passion to succeed, will newfound knowledge become obsolete. May you continue to consume knowledge. May ambition, perseverance and integrity become your wings to greatness during your time at Bond University and beyond! Professor Raoul Mortley AO, FAHA Executive Dean and Pro Vice Chancellor (International) Faculty of Society and Design

Gold Coast Getaways WORDS WILL TAYLOR Let’s be honest – life as a Bond University student can at times be difficult. Sometimes we find ourselves stuck at university for more time than we would prefer and during the back end of the semester, this is usually the case for the majority of Bondies. However, it’s always important to remind ourselves that we live in the vibrant, everevolving Gold Coast with numerous attractions to keep citizens entertained. In this article I am going to take you through some of the best natural attractions in the vicinity of our campus. These places are the perfect solution for a quick getaway that will make you feel both refreshed and grateful to live in such a beautiful part of the world.

Currumbin Rock Pools Uncover one of the Gold Coast’s hidden treasures by making the trek to Currumbin and more specifically the Currumbin Rock Pools. Although this place has been marred in controversy given the recent incidents involving ambitious divers, this swimming hole really is picturesque. Located in the midst of the Currumbin Valley, the drive is half of the attraction when you take the trek to the rock pools. Beautifully lush scenery is on the agenda if you take this opportunity to experience the class of Currumbin.

Springbrook National Park Just a little further on from Currumbin lies the Springbrook National Park featuring some of the best waterfalls the GC has to offer. Springbrook National Park – “The Twin Falls are the main attraction, with this huge natural landmark being loved by all visiting patrons. Within the lovely subtropical rainforest, the mountains and wildlife are stunning; and whether you take in the views from the 300m trail, or tackle the 54km hike, these walking tracks are well worth the effort.

Mount Warning Between the coast and Byron Bay lies one of my favourite destinations in Queensland. The Mt Warning Experience is very, very special. The 8.8km, five hour walk through the rainforest presents hikers with some fantastic coastal views. Upon reaching the summit make sure you take in your surroundings. This is an experience that is certainly challenging but extremely rewarding.

Burleigh Heads National Park Closer to Bond is Burleigh Heads National Park right next to the iconic Burleigh Hill. The walk through the park which travels along rocky foreshore is very relaxing, with views of Burleigh Beach that are simply sensational. Whether you spend your time eagerly awaiting the chance to see whales and sea-eagles or prefer the sight of talented local surfers across one of Australia’s most famous surfing point breaks, Burleigh Heads National Park is an easy, simple solution to help you refresh and recharge before heading back into Bond.

The Type Of Students You Meet at Bond WORDS ASHLEY PILLHOFER

Regardless of its status as one of Australia’s smallest universities, the Bond campus proves to be an amazing place to sit back, relax and people watch. With the semester almost finished, you will have had the chance to meet lots of people around campus. Bond’s wide and varied student culture is colourful to be honest; here is a breakdown of the characters you will meet on campus.

THE ‘I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND’ GUY

THE ‘I TRAVEL TO FIND MYSELF’ PERSON

He recently got a girlfriend and made sure you knew about it. You also got a Snapchat, Instagram and text about his new relationship status. Want to celebrate his new relationship together with a few bevs at Dons? Better let him ask his girlfriend first.

Having recently returned from three months in Czechoslovakia or somewhere else just as abstract ‘exploring and finding themselves’ (read drinking and clubbing), they will be sure to tell you all about how much travel ‘changed their life’. They will also never fail to mention how much they prefer *insert name of any country here* to the Gold Coast.

*This is a humorous piece and any similarity to any persons is purely coincidental...duh*

Picture credit: Emily Hill. Follow her on Insta: @emily_hillll

THE ‘DAD BOUGHT ME THIS HANDBAG’ GIRL

THE ‘EVEN MY SOCKS ARE RALPH’ GUY

THE ‘I’M GONNA INSTA IT’ GIRL

Characterised by her ability to always look good, this girl can be seen in the library or MLC though never quite seems to be studying. Her nails are manicured and her signature Louis Vuitton bag is slung over her shoulder as she sips on an XL iced coffee and scrolls through Insta.

Head to toe Ralph is a hard look to pull off, but fortunately it pairs well with aviator sunglasses, loafers and a ‘I put more effort into my hair than required’ hair cut. This guy can probably be spotted around campus dropping corporate jargon like its going out of style, “I’ll pencil you in for lunch?”

You will find her in the midst of any vaguely camera-friendly Bond event (Holi or Frat Party anyone?) working every angle she has in an effort to take the perfect shot. Next step is to find the perfect VSCO filter because any professional knows the Instagram filters are for armatures. Catchphrase: Don’t post until #primetime guys!

SHUTTER BUG ROUND THREE! THIS EDITION WE FEATURE BOND’S VERY OWN PARTY SNAPPER DECLAN CARUSO

The reason I love photography is because my job isn’t simply capturing the subject as it is. Rather, it’s because the challenge comes from manipulating the environment in service of eliciting an emotion, namely the emotion I felt whilst taking the photo. Street photography is my favourite genre for that very reason: subjects are so eclectic and varied that you’ll rarely feel the same way twice about your shots. Portraits are also fun as you’re tasked with finding the natural beauty in your subject. Tells like how a subject smirks, which direction they lean, or even how they hold an object can be so minuscule and yet speak volumes about their personality.

Fashion Staples All Women Need

WORDS JORDIE HICKS Contributor from Whither Fashion - whitherfashion.wixsite.com/blog/ Below are your top 10 must-haves. Each item will last through the ages, and can be worn no matter the season. These pieces are timeless and deserve a place in everyone’s wardrobe!

The Perfect Jeans

White T-Shirt

Everyone is going to have their own perfect cut, whether it be skinny, boyfriend, flared or cropped. They are super easy to style for day or night and can be worn dressed-up or dressed-down. It’s all about finding what works for your body shape and makes you feel good!

A crisp white t-shit is a must. A fitted tee looks great with a pair of black jeans, or you can pair an oversized style with your favourite denim mini skirt. You can’t go wrong!

Statement Piece of Jewellery

Denim Jacket

It’s important not to forget about your staple accessory. To find your perfect statement piece, pick something that reflects your personality and you won’t be disappointed. You can go bold and chunky, or fine and dainty!

Whether your pick is an oversized vintage look or a chic cropped fit, you can’t pass up a denim jacket. While still looking classy, the jacket vamps up the outfit and gives off a punk rock vibe. Perfect during the times where it’s not too cold, but you just need something to block the wind. Goes perfect with a t-shirt dress and boots!

Black Boots

Button-up Blouse

Black boots are an essential. To ensure you have the perfect pair, find something that not only looks amazing and can match with majority of your outfits, but also something that is super comfy and durable. You can go for the low cut ankle boot, an over the knee pair of heeled boots or a pair of Dr Martens.

This item is timeless and the designs are endless. You can dress it up with a pencil skirt and a pair of heels, or you can go for a chic look by pairing your go-to blouse with your favourite pair of jeans and sneakers. They also look great with the front tucked in, and the back untucked!

Sneakers

Black Dress

A pair of universal sneakers that you can wear with jeans, a skirt or a dress are a must. Not only do they provide comfort, but also give you an edgy look! They are perfect for brunch with the girls or a day that you know you will be on your feet.

This is possibly the most talked about fashion staple! Stereotypically the LBD is a figure hugging and curve accentuating piece, but don’t be afraid to step out of these boundaries! A perfect example is a ¾ length, straight and sleeveless day dress. Either way, you wont regret having a black dress in your wardrobe!

Clutch

Sweater / Knit

Not all clutches are made to be worn at special events. A must have clutch is definitely the classic black, but it is also great to have something a little bolder! This one can assist with colour blocking, and will always look great against an all black or all white outfit – it helps make a statement!

A sweater is a simple yet elegant addition to your wardrobe! They pair perfectly with jeans and heals, or an oversized knit matched with a denim skirt and sneakers creates the ideal effortless look. Grey is always a perfect sweater colour, but don’t be afraid to step out and go for something a bit brighter or even an off the shoulder cut!

Tasteful Titties in Art: Are You Afraid of the Big Bad Boob? WORDS ASHLEY PILLHOFER An esoteric and strange relationship exists between the female form, art and media. This conflict of sorts holds an omnipresent form of censorship that hides the true nature of the female form from mass media and art; ensuring that only the adulterated version of the female body be disseminated to a mass audience. This censorship that suppresses the open dissemination of content and art highlights the explicit nature of the female figure and ensures that the expression of a frank female form is seen as a risqué and rebellious act. I write this, from a feminist perspective; though I ask you acknowledge that it is also from the perspective of someone who is a female, with a body. While only scratching the surface, the Free the Nipple campaign highlights the issue of hyper sexualisation of women and points out the disturbing reality of the public’s view on the female body. Stressing the social acceptability for sexualised advertising but renouncing the female form in female art. The most disheartening fact is that generally, the only instance where the dissemination of the female figure is allowed is when it is shared from the perspective of a male, or for the enjoyment of men. Abundant is the online presence of the female figure in the form of pornography or advertisements intended to sexualise and sell a product; there is an obvious deficit though of genuine and authentic content containing boobs and the rest from a female perspective in all their womanly glory. Citing Instagram’s removal of Petra Collins’ bikini photograph

in 2013 as an example of this, Collins published a photo of herself in a bikini- it should be pointed out that this image did not violate any terms of service nor break any explicit rulessimply the image insulted (well, I assume) someone’s standard of the feminine body by showing a brief glimpse of pubic hair. While I don’t personally advocate for posting pictures of your pubes, this prohibition on freedom of expression violates art, life and society itself; for is that not what those things are about, freedom of expression? By enforcing the suppression of the female body this censorship dehumanises the female body and serves to prohibit women’s ownership of their own bodies. I stand by the belief that, I am more than my body, but, my body is me. While this may not appear to be a significant issue, the current global climate that prompts the suppression of female rights is important. Without the allowance to decide on matters of our bodies, woman lose the ability to be autonomous members of society. The Internet mimics life, and life imitates art; it is for this reason the act of taking ownership acts as a defiance to a society that instills a cynicism and animosity to the natural female form. Cover up, bare all, and take control of the dissemination of your body in art, online and in life. Summarised, that’s the total defiance of society.

Finding Your Juice Your guide to finding the perfect juice to complement your Ayurveda Dosha WORDS MIA TARANTINI Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga, consists of three basic energy types known as Doshas. Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These energy types are found in all living things but every individual has a different combination of each. It is important to keep your dosha in balance and one way to ensure that your body and mind are in harmony is through lifestyle and diet. Juices, and their impact on health has been widely researched among the Ayurveda community. Finding a juice that complements your dosha could help counteract the symptoms of ‘mis-juicing. Once you’ve discovered the juice best suited for your dosha, you might be able explain why you’ve been having those random mood swings or why you were so bloated after your last green juice. Start the journey to get your body and mind back on track and find your juice…

symptoms of an imbalance include poor circulation, fatigue and discomfort in the joints. Vata’s are known to have sensitive digestive systems so green juices are NOT recommended as they usually cause gas (does that explain last week’s bloating casualty?). Instead of green juices you should try fruit and veggies rich in complex carbohydrates and high in protein. Think beetroot, sweet potato, cucumber and fennel. As well as reducing gas and bloating, juices made from these ingredients will promote communication throughout your mind and nervous system. Another characteristic of Vata is dry hair and skin. This can be reduced by adding ginger, turmeric, cinnamon or even lemon to your juice.

Pitta Dosha (Fire Energy)

If you are unsure of your Dosha, go to the link below to take a quick quiz — http://lifespa.com/ayurvedic-health-quizzes/ body-type-quiz/#

Pitta’s are seen as strong and fiery, goal orientated and as having great leadership skills. However, if not fed at regular intervals Pitta’s are known to become irritable, impatient and are more prone to mood swings. People of this dosha are subject to high acidity levels, muscle and tendon inflammation and skin irritations. Noticed any random spouts of acne or heartburn? This could be due to an imbalance within your energy. To combat this, try cooling juices containing cucumbers, celery, aloe vera, mint and lemon. You can even try adding some leafy greens such as kale or bok choi, but proceed with caution as too much green will turn your juices from cool to warm. To enhance the benefits you should dilute the juice with room temperature water and remove the foam before consuming.

Vata Dosha (Wind Energy)

Kapha Dosha (Earth Energy)

The science of Ayurveda was developed by Hindu Monks five-six thousand years ago in order to obtain maximum health and facilitate their meditation. The word itself translates to ‘life’ and ‘knowledge’ which makes us think that these guys knew what they were talking about! The system uses herbal remedies, balanced diets and lifestyles and yogic breathing to prolong life. Each Dosha is different so individual remedies are required to restore balance. In this instance you’ll discover which juice could best help you stabilise your body/mind composition.

This energy type is closely related to creativity and vibrancy, however, if an imbalance does occur it can result in fear and anxiety. Other

These dependable and compassionate energy types often get a bad rep in the Ayurveda world as they have the slowest metabolism and get

labeled as slothful but they’re known for being thorough thinkers, active listeners and gentle in nature. Despite this, when an imbalance occurs Kapha’s are prone to excessive weight gain, depression and an increase in apathy. To resolve this, Kapha’s should push aside their sweet tooth cravings and opt for something bitter and astringent. Try juicing things like celery, kale, broccoli and coriander. Juices containing these ingredients will stop the sweet cravings and consequently lower blood sugar levels. To add some flavour, venture outside your comfort zone and add some cayenne pepper, cinnamon or ginger! This will add some spice to your bitter juice and help boost your metabolism. If you really need that sweet fill try fruits like

pomegranate or apples. Steer clear of fruits such as mango, banana and pineapple. Eating these is probably why you’ve had a cold or headache that you cant seem to shake, it’s your body telling you there’s an imbalance! We suggest that you take the time to learn about the qualities of your dosha so that you are better able to recognise any imbalances. Each dosha is different and should be respected and understood. If you understand your energy, you can better understand your mind and your body’s needs. This will enable you to maintain a healthy mind/body composition and live a fuller life.

Picture: Ollie Crawford

CC:DISCO! We chat to the Club DJ and Radio announcer who’ll be performing at the upcoming Groovin’ The Moo music festival. How did you get into the DJ business? I’ve been doing radio since I was 15, so a long time. I started being a volunteer at a local station in the country then went and got a degree in radio and that has naturally progressed to becoming a club DJ. Its taken years and years to really learn ‘how to DJ’ but just getting all the experience I could, teaching myself everything about music and mixing in [my] bedroom every chance I could is how I got to this stage. What was the first record you ever bought? It would have to be Janet Jackson “That’s the Way Love Goes” and yeah I still bring it out from time to time. What a tune. What style of music do you play and what inspires it? I have a certain sound, it’s uplifting and vocal driven and fun, the main genres I play are disco, boogie, house. I really love uplifting music personally so being able to bring it to the dancefloor and sharing it with others is such a great feeling. What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ? That would have to be playing to 10,000 + crowd at Meredith in Dec last year, playing that festival is everyone’s dream and basically all the times I wanted to quit of give up or felt like I wasn’t good enough ...were all forgotten once I got that booking. It was amazing as it was all my best friends down the front, my

family and of course me... the happiest girl in the world playing music I love.

You’ll be playing at the upcoming Groovin The Moo music festival, what are your expectations for it this year? I can’t wait, I played the Bendigo GTM a couple of years ago and it was great. I’m just looking forward to it , especially because I get to do the national tour. Looking forward to meeting people and seeing parts of Australia I’ve never had the chance to see before. Is there a particular festival or club you haven’t yet played at but would love to? Yeah I think Europe is the dream gig, I would love to play sunset set at Dekmantel Selectors in Tisno, Croatia. I love playing that site and would love to play it again. What do you envision for your musical career in the future? I just hope to be in music for my whole life, it’s not an easy career but I think if you are in it for the right reasons, aka music not fame or money, then you can be as they call them... a “lifer”. I hope to keep doing exactly what I’m doing now as I love it and as a kid I always dreamed of doing this so I feel really lucky to do what I do.

KINDER Get to know the very talented DJ sisters, Savannah and Briony. You can catch them at Groovin The Moo this year! How did you guys get started in the music business? S: We were always writing songs growing up together and playing piano. Then we started getting into electronic music and listening to that, then we produced a little bit. We then realised, maybe we should DJ because we love electronic music and partying. When I turned 18, we started DJing at friend’s parties. Briony went to uni and we were DJing at local clubs there. Then we found our manager Belle and we started playing bigger gigs and growing from there. Groovin The Moo will be your first tour, what are your expectations? B: We’re really stoked, we’re very excited, maybe a little bit nervous. We don’t really have any expectations because, we’ve played festivals before, but we’ve never gone on a huge tour like this. We’ve heard everyone becomes really close and really looks after each other. We’re excited to meet other artists and get to know everyone.

B: Yeah I’d say Chinese Laundry. I reckon that was probably the funnest.

You two also have a love for fashion, can you tell me more about that? B: I’ve always been really into fashion, I studied design for a bit at school and I’ve always been into op-shopping, collecting all the items and turning them into something new. As Savannah started to get a bit older she also started to get a bit more into fashion. So, whilst we just loved fashion anyway, we thought it would be really useful to incorporate fashion and the music into one. We always try to create funky outfits, kinda like a performance, it’s like wearing a costume. What are your plans and goals for this year? S: We’re in the middle of writing our EP, so that’s our main goal, to get a song out.

You must have met some cool people through music, who is your favourite? S: I met Aluna George at Falls, I felt like I could look up to her, she’s so great. We aspire to be like her so that was pretty cool. What’s your favourite venue you’ve ever played at? S: Probably all the festivals are our favourite. In terms of clubs, I’d say Chinese Laundry was pretty fun.

*If you missed out on Groovin The Moo tickets, make sure you grab some for Splendor in the Grass. Kinder have been added to the line up!

Review: Corey Wilson Photography Exhibition WORDS YASMIN BONNELL Corey Wilson is a 27-year-old photographer from Santa Cruz, California, and when he’s not capturing waves he’s catching them. On Friday March 10th his first photography exhibition was held at the Balter Brewing Company here on the Gold Coast. Wilson’s photographs were projected onto the brick brewery walls and printed on canvases that stood on a wooden table, drawing a lot of attention from the audience. To go along with the theme of the exhibition, his work was printed on surfboards shaped by Darren Handley and displayed on the walls. The main attraction was the large screen strategically placed above the bar where Wilson’s work played on a loop. Wilson said he grew up surfing and has been

around the ocean his whole life. He initially became interested in photography during high school and began shooting his friends surfing. This passion eventually took him to Santa Barbara, California, where he studied and graduated from the Brooks Photography Institute with a bachelors degree in photography. Wilson got a job at Surfing Magazine where he became a senior photographer. Wilson said through his work and travels he has met many influential people including Australian Pro Surfer Mick Fanning who he now considers a close friend. There’s a quality in Wilson’s work that still imitates his teenage self simply photographing friends. It’s the raw way his subjects are portrayed as they experience and appreciate

all nature has to offer, particularly the ocean. This concept stood out most in the photograph of Mick Fanning surfing at Off the Wall; a surf spot on Oahu’s North Shore. Fanning is coming off a barrel and Wilson has captured his expression from a low angle putting the viewer in his position and provoking the same sense of adrenaline Fanning would have been feeling at that moment. Wilson’s photography is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also evokes emotion from its audience.

“I wasn’t sure how many people were going to show up, but my main goal for the evening was just to have a fun night with my friends.” A spokesperson for the Balter Brewing Company’s Facebook page said over the course of the night, they had around 300-400 people through the venue. “Via social media and the interest it was receiving we did expect a few people to come along,” they said. “It was a great night and an awesome crowd.”

Wilson said he was pleased with how the exhibition turned out and had a fun night with his friends. “I was very happy with the outcome of the event,” he said

The exhibition was the event to attend for a laid back night with friends who value photography, beer or purely just good vibes. If you appreciate all these things, missing Corey Wilson’s exhibition was a serious misfortune.

REVIEWS like folk music. Thankfully they did however, because it is one of the most popular songs on the album. To sum it up, if you’ve loved Ed’s previous albums, you’re going to love this one. If you’ve never really gotten into Ed this is the album to check out. It offers a variaty of genres suitable for everyone. Who know’s what’s next for Ed, perhaps Minus?

Ed Sheeran - Divide ★★★★★

WORDS CHLOE ALEXANDER After a painful year without him, Ed Sheeran is back! After he spent exactly one year on the down low and off social media, on the 3rd of March, Ed dropped his long anticipated album, Divide. As many suspected, he’s kept with the theme of maths equations, however this album equals his best one yet. It sold 672 000 copies during the first week in the UK and broke one day stream records on Spotify, being streamed 68.7 million times in one day. Divide has a fairly similar sound to Plus and Multiply, however there is evident progression throughout the 16 track album. He worked with the likes of Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder and Foy Vance to deliver a mixture of musical sounds. Some of the love songs include Hearts Don’t Break Around Here, How Would You Feel (Paean) and the most popular one from the album, Perfect, which is sure to be the next Thinking Out Loud. He also has kept some of the hip-hop/rap vibe in the album with Eraser and New Man which are great tunes for those of you who aren’t into the ballad scene. On a more upbeat note, this album also includes Irish-folk influence, with the sound of fiddles in Nancy Mulligan which is a traditional Irish song. Galway Girl also includes Irish roots with a strong beat. Ed had to strongly convince his record label to keep this song on the album as they thought no one would

LION (2016) ★★★★ WORDS ALEXANDRA BERNARD From a remote village in India, through the dangerous streets of Calcutta, to Australia and back to India, Garth Davis’ Lion provides viewers with an invigorating journey. Based on a true story, Lion follows the life of Saroo, a young Indian boy who gets separated from his brother and finds himself locked on a train on its way to Calcutta, 1600km away. While in Calcutta, Lion highlights the horrors occurring to children in the city, incorporating the important underlying message that any decent film possesses. You can’t but help smile as Sunny Pawar, playing a young Saroo, gives a cheeky grin, highlighting his innocence. The time period of the film is emphasised as Saroo arrives in Australia to meet his adoptive mother, Nicole Kidman, whose hairstyle is straight out of the 80’s. Through the middle, viewers can tune off a little, as a now grown Saroo contemplates the possibility of finding his family. Dev Patel stars as adult Saroo, although Nicole Kidman’s hairstyle seems to be stuck in time. The film increases in suspense as Saroo wanders through the streets of his old village in India, ultimately ending in joy for the characters and the audience as he is reunited with his mother and sister. Although it’s a little slow through the middle, Lion is ultimately a heart-warming tale filled with important messages.

Why you need to watch Orphan Black WORDS ELIZA REILLY We need to talk about Orphan Black. Well, I guess I need to talk about Orphan Black because I only just got up to date with the existing seasons and now must wait approximately three months for that gripping finale cliff hanger to be resolved. Seriously though, you also need to watch Orphan Black. Produced in the land of Justin Trudeau’s backside and maple syrup, Orphan Black follows the life of Sarah Manning who witnesses a woman, who looks exactly like her, commit suicide only to steal her identity. This spur of the moment decision plunges Sarah’s life into a chasm of secrets and lies where she discovers she is one of a dozen (and counting) clones. She soon meets her test tube sisters as they band together to find out who made them and why with lots of kick ass action and ‘big corporation vs the little guy’ (or clones) tension in between. The show technically falls within the sci-fi genre but when you watch it, you definitely don’t get that vibe so don’t worry if you’re not a fan of aliens and UFO’s. Though my favourite part of the whole show, even better than the content and story line, is the way the cast and crew transfer the world of human cloning onto the screen. Every single clone in the show (remember, a dozen and counting), is played by one single actress. Her name is Tatiana Maslany and quite honestly, I think she’s the greatest actress I’ve ever seen on television. You completely forget each

clone belongs to the same sole human as she has an incredible ability to nail each character down to the nuances accompanied by an impressive range of accents. Maslany apparently alternates between one character per week of filming which assists her in getting into the head of each clone. The crew then shoots each scene anywhere from one to four times over, with the exact same camera movements, depending on how many clones are in the scene before stitching the layers of footage together. Despite Tatiana playing basically 80% of the characters, the supporting cast are not to be forgotten, lead strongly by Sarah’s flamboyant foster brother, Felix (played by Jordan Gavaris). The show has also built a reputation for taking real life issues and medical debates and intricately weaving them into the show’s plot line. Think human cloning (duh), designer babies and terminal illnesses. With four seasons down and a final fifth season on its way in June, now is the time to join the clone club. Unless you get completely obsessed like I did, you have a perfect amount of time to become absorbed in the world of Sarah Manning and have that lead straight into the final 10 episodes. It’s funny, it’ll have you on the edge of your seat and just quietly, the opening theme is a banger. It’s Orphan Black. The first three seasons are available for streaming on Netflix. If you know where to look, the fourth is out and about too.
