INSPIRATION

Terra Firma is a classic and elegant cowl that incorporates easy-to-read textures and enchanting lace. Designed to be warm without bulk, this cowl is great for preventing the chill from creeping onto the back of your neck on a blustery fall day.

With a little of a lot - lace, seed stitch, twisted stitches, and i-cord borders, it is an engaging project to knit one more row to see what happens next. The 20-row stitch repeat makes it easy for you to make the cowl shorter or longer simply by adding and subtracting repeats.

Designed to be seamless, the cowl is cast on provisionally and grafted at the end to make a loop. Don't be worried about an ugly seam - there won't be one. Graft it together with ease and continuing the texture with the logical, step-by-step grafting instructions included in the pattern.

1. GET TO KNOW THE PATTERN

Get Ready

Set yourself up for success! Skim through the pattern and ask yourself these questions: Are there any techniques that are new to me?

2. TRY OUT NEW TECHNIQUES

There is stress associated with ruining a delicate yarn or getting stuck in a project. There’s no doubt that ripping and reknitting some yarns leaves them looking less than their best. If there is a new-to-you technique in the pattern, click through to the tutorial video, grab some less-prized spare yarn, and work a small sample with the technique. It’s a low-stakes way to boost your confidence before jumping into the project as well as lessening the risk of reknitting the same yarn multiple times while learning on-the-go.

3. CHOOSING AND SUBSTITUTING YARN

Arroyo by malabrigo was chosen for this pattern because it is a soft, superwash merino that has a ply structure that makes it great for both lace and texture. Wool blends with nylon, silk, and cashmere would also work great for this pattern. This pattern was originally written for fingering weight, and while slightly smaller in depth, it looks beautiful with a gauge slightly smaller than listed.

Weight: Sport / 5-Ply Fiber Content: 100% Superwash Merino Wool Ply Structure: 4-plies with an S-twist Colors: Solid and semisolid colors will show off the texture and lace well.

To substitute yarn, look for a yarn with properties similar to the pattern yarn to achieve similar results. The best way to know if a yarn will work is to audition it.

4. AUDITION YOUR CHOICES

Swatching is a way to audition your yarn, needles, and knitting style to see if they do (or don’t) work together.

Swatching doesn’t have to take long, and you can reuse the yarn.

Work from the opposite end of the skein than you usually use to work. Instead of cutting the yarn on the swatch after binding off and pulling it through, place a locking stitch marker through the bind off loop. Wash the swatch with the remaining yarn outside of the basin. Once you need the yarn in your project, undo the stitch marker and knit from the swatch like it is a sock blank.

Swatch recipes are included later in the GET READY section.

Estimated yarn usage and dimensions are only applicable to the yarn and gauge listed on the pattern.

There are many factors that make up gauge: your yarn’s weight, fiber content, or ply structure, your needle material, the stitch patterns, your knitting style - it is completely unique to you and your yarn.

A change to any of these items away from what is listed in the pattern will affect the size of the finished project as well as how much yarn is used.

Cast on 35 stitches using the chain cast on Play-circle, or another flexible cast on.

WORK INSTRUCTIONS

Using the written or charted instructions that follow, work Rows 1-20 once.

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS

Using the written instructions on Page 9, work Rows 1-20 as follows: RS Rows: Work columns (1) through (5).

WS Rows: Work columns (5) through (9). (7) is the Leaf motif in column (3).

CHARTED INSTRUCTIONS Using the chart on Page 11, work Rows 1-20 as follows: RS Rows: Work from beginning of row to m3.

WS Rows: Work from m3 to end of row.

This swatch recipe is not much smaller than working a full 20-row repeat of the pattern. If unconcerned about running out of yarn due to gauge differences, consider casting on, working 20 rows, blocking on the needles, and measuring.

Cast On

Cast on 51 stitches using the Invisible Provisional Cast On. Designer Note: Substituting other provisional cast on methods may provide unexpected results when setting up for grafting.

CAST ON RESOURCES INVISIBLE PROVISIONAL CAST ON Play-circle

1. Holding the waste yarn and project yarn together, create a slip knot and place it on the righthand needle. If using an interchangeable cable as the waste yarn, put the slip knot only on the cable. The slip knot does not count as a cast on stitch.

2. Hold the needle and the slip knot in your right hand and the two strands of yarn together in the middle, ring, and little fingers of your left hand.

3. Insert your left thumb and index finger between the strands so that the project yarn is above your index finger and the waste yarn is below your thumb. Spread your fingers apart and turn your hand outward to wrap the waste yarn around your fingers. This is the starting position.

4. Bring the needle towards your body, under the strand of waste yarn, and in between the two strands in your left hand. Bring the needle over and behind the project yarn strand and then underneath both strands to return to the starting position. This casts on a stitch that looks like a knit stitch.

5. Move the needle away from you, behind and under the project yarn, and then up between the two strands to return to the starting position. This casts on a stitch that looks like a yarnover.

6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until you have the required number of stitches.

7. If you ended with Step 4, the project yarn will be unanchored when working the first row. After turning the work, twist the waste yarn around the project yarn. Move the waste yarn forward from the left of the project yarn, in front of the project yarn, and around the right of the project yarn. Hold the waste yarn in the left fingers while working the first stitches.

8. If you ended with Step 5, hold the waste yarn in the left fingers while working the first stitches.

Blocking

The order to block and graft or graft and block doesn't matter and is personal preference. The reference photo here was blocked before grafting because we prefer blocking a rectangle and having a true reading of stitch gauge for grafting. If blocking after grafting, pool noodles make a great filler to keep the folds from creasing.

BLOCKING GUIDE

Animal fibers felt when at least two of these three factors are present: moisture, heat, and agitation. Since we are forced to use one felting factor during wet blocking - moisture, we are avoiding heat and agitation.

Fill a sink or basin with cool water, adding a capful of your favorite wool wash. The cool water removes one felting factor: heat.

Look for soaps that are rinseless, which don’t require you to give your fabric a second soak in plain water.

Fully submerge your cowl and gently press out as many air bubbles as possible. Here we are removing a second felting factor: agitation. Pressing is gentler than squeezing, twisting, or wringing. The idea is to have all of the fiber fully saturated with moisture. Continue pressing out air from the fabric until it remains underwater.

Let the cowl soak for at least 10 minutes, allowing the water to fully infiltrate the fibers.

Drain sink and press (again: no agitation, do not squeeze, wring, or twist) as much water out of your cowl as possible.

Place your cowl on a bath towel on the floor. Cover it with another bath towel. Roll up your cowl and the towels like a burrito. Step on the towel burrito, using your body weight to remove excess moisture from the cowl.

Remove your cowl from the towels and check that the fabric now feels damp instead of dripping wet. If it is still very wet, repeat the towel burrito process with dry towels.

Lay cowl flat on a moisture-proof surface. Use rust-proof blocking wires in the edges (if used, you can use the interchangeable cables in the short edges) and rust-proof pins to pin the cowl into the shape of the schematic. If your gauge was different, block it to the dimensions of your gauge, not pattern gauge. Don’t torture your cowl!

Pin the short edges out to the desired circumference measurement (Long 60" / 152cm shown).

Pin the long edges out to the desired height measurement (10" / 25cm shown).

Allow to dry completely before removing pins and wires.

Graft using instructions on Page 13 and weave in ends.

Grafting Instructions

SETTING UP

Starting with the edge opposite the slip knot, pick up the stitches from the invisible provisional cast on. The first and even stitches are twisted on the cable / waste yarn - untwist them while picking them up. The second and even stitches from the slip knot are untwisted and can be slipped as they are on the cable / waste yarn onto the needle.

Fold the cowl so that the right sides are together on the inside and the wrong sides are on the outside. Holding the needles parallel, the most recently worked edge's WS will be facing and the cast on edge will be on the needle behind it. The yarn tails from both the cast on edge and the row just finished will be on the right side of the work.

Thread the working yarn from the row just finished onto a yarn needle. Twist the first 3 stitches of the cast on edge the same as when starting the first row of the instructions after cast on.

1. With longer cowls, place part of the cowl around your head like a hood.

2. Twist the cowl once and place the extra length looped around your neck.

1. Fold the cowl in half and wrap it around your neck like a scarf.

2. Place one of the folded ends through the loop of the other end and pull it through.

1. Hold the cowl by both ends and twist it in the middle into two loops.

2. Place both loops around the neck and adjust the loops to lengths you like.

Make It Yours

MODIFY LENGTH (CIRCUMFERENCE)

You can add or remove length from the cowl by adding or subtracting 20-row repeats. The only important thing is to start with Row 1 and end with Row 19 to set up properly for the grafting instructions.

MODIFY HEIGHT

You can add height to the cowl by casting on additional multiples of 8 stitches. At gauge, each multiple of 8 stitches is approxiately 1 5/8" / 4cm.

Working The Charted Instructions: Work the stitches marked by the bold border an additional time for each 8 additional stitches cast on. If the below is too small, draw the box around the stitches on the main chart.

Draw a horiztonal line on the left side of the second stitch after marker two and the left side of the tenth stitch after marker two as shown in the chart below.

Working The Written Instructions: Replace (5) Lace with this version which repeats to a number of stitches before an indicated marker.
