Once a year, American Coin-Op compiles what we call the Buyer’s Guide, a comprehensive tool that can connect you with the leading vendors serving the self-service laundry industry. This edition marks the 30th year we’ve done this.

WHEN COMPETING STORE OPENS IN AREA, MANY OPERATORS FEAR ITS APPEARANCE OR SIZE
CHICAGO — When a new coin laundry opens in the area, more than one-third of operators (36.4%) fear that the new store will be more attractive or larger than their own, according to the results of February’s AmericanCoinOp.com Wire survey. Roughly 27% of operators surveyed say they don’t fear competition.
A new store offering cheaper vend prices is the worst fear for 13.6% of operators. Roughly 11% fear a store with a better equipment mix, 6.8% fear one that offers higher-quality equipment, and 4.5% fear a store that is cleaner than theirs. No one polled fears a store with all of its machines in working order.
When going head to head with a competitor, 32.6% of laundry owners consider the cleanliness of their store to be their greatest strength. Roughly 16% lean on reasonable prices, while 14% take pride in having every machine up and running. Another 11.6% rely on their store’s size and/or layout.
Smaller shares look to having the ideal machine mix (7%) or plenty of customer amenities (4.7%). None said “good marketing” is their greatest strength. Among the 14% who selected “other,” they named things such as customer service or having an attended store. Still other respondents said every option was their greatest strength.
Roughly 53% admitted they would take a “mild hit” if a “good” laundry opened in their area this week, with another 22.2% saying they would suffer a “major hit.” Approximately 13% would lose little, if any, business, and another 2.2% would lose no business. The remaining 8.9% was unsure.
Approximately 61% of respondents believe there are too many laundries in their respective areas. Roughly 34% don’t believe there are too many stores, and 4.5% are unsure.
The Wire survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, but it should not be considered scientific.

All self-service laundry owners and operators are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and industry trends.

AMERICAN DRYER CORP. ENTERS COMMERCIAL WASHER MARKET
American Dryer Corp., which has manufactured dryers for the commercial coin-operated, on-premise and industrial laundry markets for nearly 50 years, has officially entered the commercial washer market, the company announced.
“We now offer the same quality you expect from ADC in energyefficient washer-extractors,” says Joe Bazzinotti, the company’s president and CEO. “After nearly five decades of providing superior drying solutions, it simply felt like the right time to offer a companion for them—EcoWash is just that.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES IN EIGHT STATES
The minimum wage increased in eight states effective Jan. 1, boosting the incomes of more than 1.4 million low-wage workers in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

The minimum wage in these states rose between 28 and 37 cents per hour—an extra $582 to $770 a year for a full-time worker— as a result of state laws that require the minimum wage to keep up with inflation, says the National Employment Law Project.
More than 1 million workers have been directly impacted as the new minimum wage rates exceeded their hourly pay, and 400,000 more have seen a raise as pay scales were adjusted upward to reflect the new minimum wage, according to an analysis of government data by the Economic Policy Institute.
Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have minimum wage rates above the federal level of $7.25 per hour, which is approximately $15,000 per year for a full-time minimum wage earner.
Washington state has the highest minimum wage at $9.04 per hour. Georgia and Wyoming, at $5.15 per hour, have the lowest.
There are no minimum wage laws in Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina, according to the Department of Labor. ■
