A majority of distributors polled in this year’s American Coin-Op distributor survey enjoyed better business than the previous year.

Roughly 55% of survey respondents said business— including the sales of newly constructed self-service laundries, and replacement business—was better in 2011 than it was in 2010. And 59% predict that 2012 sales will be better than 2011’s.

Industry averages for the numbers of top loaders, front loaders and dryer pockets by store, as well as the average size and selling price of a newly constructed store, are among the nuggets you’ll mine from our analysis of 2011 distributor business.

FEW OWNERS PROMOTE COIN LAUNDRY AS WAY TO CONSERVE WATER

The first half of 2012 was the hottest on record, and drought covered more than 60% of the contiguous United States as of mid-August. It seems like a good opportunity to promote a coin laundry as a way to conserve water. High-efficiency, commercial washers use as little as 0.5 to 1.5 gallons per pound of clothes laundered compared to home machines that typically use 2.5 to 3.5 gallons per pound, according to the Coin Laundry Association.

But in the results from September’s AmericanCoinOp.com Wire survey, less than 6% of self-service laundry owners promoted their store as a way for area residents to conserve water.

And for the time being, it doesn’t seem that the drought has produced many local water restrictions directly affecting coin laundries. Only 5.3% of respondents reported that their local community had passed or enforced water restrictions that impacted them.

Meanwhile, the drought hurt at least one coin laundry in another way. “Farmers did not have the crops to use seasonal workers, which impacted our business tremendously,” the respondent wrote. But others remarked that there was no water shortage in their area and that the drought’s impact has been minimal.

It may not be related to the drought but 42.1% of laundry owners have installed new, more efficient wash equipment in the last 12-18 months.

Meanwhile, during that same time period, local utilities have raised water rates charged to 68.4% of respondents.

Roughly 32% of laundry owners polled in last month’s survey said they have raised, or plan to increase, their washer vend prices in 2012.

While the Wire survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific.

Subscribers to Wire e-mails—distributed twice weekly—are invited to take the industry survey anonymously online each month. All self-service laundry owners and operators are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and industry trends. ■

2011, Expect Same for ’12

A majority of distributors polled in this year’s American Coin-Op distributor survey enjoyed better business than the previous year and is expecting overall sales in 2012 to beat those of 2011.

Roughly 55% of survey respondents said business—including the sales of newly constructed self-service laundries, and replacement business—was better in 2011 than it was in 2010. And 59% predict that 2012 sales will be better than 2011’s.

Approximately 24% said business was worse in 2011 than 2010, and 21.1% said business was comparable in both years.

Every distributor listed in the American Coin-Op DistributorsDirectory prior to July 2 was invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2011 business and makes comparisons to previous years.

2011 BUSINESS

In last year’s report, we described 2010 as a bounce-back year for many distributors. That trend continued in 2011, albeit not to the same degree. In the 2011 survey covering 2010 business, 46% said business was better in 2010 than 2009. Only 15.6% said business was better in 2009 than 2008 in the survey two years ago.

For those experiencing a change in business in 2011, the No. 1 reason was the economy. But depending on the distributor, it was either a positive or a negative.

Those who thrived saw investors inspired by upticks in the economy either building new stores or purchasing new equipment to upgrade existing facilities. Distributors whose business suffered in 2011 lamented over tight lending/lack of financing and marketplace uncertainty.

REPLACEMENT BUSINESS

Replacement-business figures showed signs of vast improvement from our report one year ago. In replacement business only, 52.6% said business was up last year compared to 2010. That’s compared to the 39.3% who saw their replacement business increase from 2009 to 2010 and 20% who saw an increase from 2008 to 2009.

Roughly 26% saw replacement business fall in 2011, and 21.1% said their level of replacement business was unchanged from 2010.

NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION

American Coin-Op asked distributors how many new laundries they built and/or to which they supplied equipment in 2011. Slightly more than 54% of respondents built, or supplied equipment to, three or fewer new laundries last year. In the 2011 survey for 2010 business, this figure was 56%. It was 62% in the 2010 survey for 2009 business.

How many new laundries did distributors deal with in some fashion in 2011? Here are the most popular answers from this year’s survey:

2011 new-construction total was more, less or the same when compared to 2010. Nearly 39% said new construction was up in 2011 (in comparison, that figure was roughly 41% in the 2011 survey for 2010 business and only 14% in the 2010 survey for 2009 business), 30.8% said new construction was down, and 30.8% said new construction during each of the two years was comparable.

The average newly constructed laundry in 2011 has 34.1 dryer pockets. That’s compared to 32.1 dryer pockets in 2010.

DOES SIZE MATTER?

So, are small stores the way to go, or is having a larger store the growing trend?

Here are the most popular store sizes, in square feet, for those that were built in 2011:

Thirty-three percent of the newly constructed stores are 2,000 square feet or less. Roughly 52% are between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet, the same percentage as was reported in last year’s survey.

The largest laundry mentioned in the 2012 survey results is 7,500 square feet, and the smallest store is 750 square feet.

The average newly constructed store in 2011 covers 2,721 square feet. Some prior averages were 2,663 square feet (2010), 2,712 square feet (2009), 2,743 square feet (2008) and 3,200 square feet (2007).

The average selling price of a newly constructed store—not including the cost of land and building—in 2011 was $366,000.

LOOKING BACK

If you built a store in 2011, how does it match up with the numbers from this survey? Here’s a quick equipment snapshot of newly constructed stores to give you some perspective.

Newly constructed stores in 2011 feature 4.5 top loaders, 30.0 front loaders and 34.1 dryer pockets on average. The stores are, on average, 2,721 square feet.

DISTRIBUTOR ACTIVITIES

Forty-one percent of distributors broker self-service laundries (compared to 25% in last year’s survey). Roughly 29% of respondents (compared to 31% in the 2011 survey) operate some type of route laundry.

Do you find distributor open houses or service schools to be valuable? Roughly 56% of respondents plan to host an event in 2013, compared to 48% in last year’s survey.

ON THE HORIZON

So, are distributors optimistic or pessimistic about 2012 overall sales? Fiftynine percent expect sales to surpass those of 2011. Roughly 31% expect overall sales this year to be the same as 2011. The remaining 10.3% believe that 2012 business will be worse than 2011 totals. ■

OL’ FLYER CAN STILL WORK ITS MAGIC

Want to do something to perk up your business without spending much money? Try flyers, otherwise known as mass circulars. One 81⁄2-by-11 sheet with appropriate copy, placed in a good spot, can do wonders. This time-tested formula has lifted many a lowkey business from average to good.

The first rule is to keep the copy simple. Unpretentious is the flavor. Such an offer will stick out from full-color brochures. Include the following: your identification, logo, slogan, one photo, and a headline. Limit to one side of one page; no one has time these days to peruse multiple-page efforts. Use white paper, because colored stock lowers readability. Write a grabber headline, and make sure it tells a story: the reason customers should choose your laundry. The story unifies the page. For example, your story is that the Laundromat is a time-saver. Even families with washers and dryers can save time. So perhaps the headline could be “Let Us Save Your Time.”

Or try “We’re the Laundromat for All Your Clothes Cleaning Needs.” Then tell an appropriate story. Feature a picture of your driver handing laundry to a woman at her front door, with the caption, “It’s so easy this way.” Or include a photo of a customer walking out of the Laundromat, captioned, “I’m going to have a cup of

coffee while the Laundromat does the work.” Every aspect of the flyer should support the story. Remove anything extraneous.

Don’t be afraid of “white space.” For instance, resist the urge to include every service you offer. Nothing dulls more than a bullet listing of a dozen lines.

Unify the form with a border. Or, even better, use a line of bubbles floating from a washing machine at the bottom of the page.

Make sure your store’s contact information is large and easy to read; don’t make the browser have to squint. Be sure to state clearly where you are and provide clear directions for how to get there. “On Main Street opposite Friendly’s” would be perfect.

Rather than having this flyer created professionally, ask someone you know with artistic talent to draw it up. You can do the job yourself. If you’re lacking art talent and computer skill, perhaps you can enlist your children, a friend or an employee to be the graphic designer. Another idea is to approach an art school and offer the assignment as a student project. Even if you pay someone to do the project, make sure you oversee the work. After all, you know exactly what you can offer the marketplace.

It might seem counterintuitive, but having something of handmade quality is often more effective than a professional, glossy offering. A low-tech effort emphasizes your individuality and separates you from appearing “corporate.” Finally, people will appreciate the homespun effort.

PERFECT PLACEMENT

OK, let’s say you’ve created a marvelous flyer. How do you use it? For starters, put flyers up on every public bulletin board you can find, including those at coffee shops, groceries, libraries and town centers. You never know when your flyer will spark some interest. It could be that a newcomer sees your mailer and discovers where to clean his clothes. Or an executive sees it and thinks, “This is a perfect solution for our busy family, especially with the wife complaining all the time that she can’t do everything.”

the windshield wipers of every car in the parking lot. Repeat this effort at different times, because you never know who’ll be there and when.

Sometimes the local chamber of commerce or similar community organization gives packets to new residents. Arrange to have your laundry’s flyer inserted in a packet. And blanket adjacent towns that do not have a Laundromat.

Try a controlled mailing of 500. Create a list based on your knowledge of town affairs. Perhaps one section of the town is lower-income and therefore has a higher customer potential. Unfortunately, bulk mail will probably not work, because you won’t do enough volume. So you’ll spend $225 for stamps. That’s not an unreasonable amount.

Now, it is true that most advertising mail is tossed into the “circular file.” But that’s because they are mass-produced slick offerings. Browsers just might give yours a look since you created it by hand.

If the effort works—you gain a half-dozen customers—try it again in six months with a different controlled mailing.

Finally, it is important to keep records of the number of pieces mailed, the money spent, and the results. That way, you will be able to analyze the figures and understand what works.

Hand out flyers at appropriate places. Such venues are primari-

ly spots where there are a high percentage of renters. The list includes unemployment offices, welfare facilities, senior citizen centers, AA meetings, and job training sites. You might say something like, “I just want to offer you a place where you’re welcome to come in anytime and wash any clothes you need. Someone is always there, and that person is always up for a talk.”

Another possibility is to hand out your flyers at community events. A college concert, a town fair or a road race might work. Of course, you’ll have to have a clever quip ready. One could say, “Of course, you’re not interested in cleaning your clothes right now, but you will need me some day.”

Blow up the flyer in size and hang it on the wall of your laundry. Or put it up as a sign in the parking lot. Or paste it on a sandwich board in front of the store. After all, if you did a nice job, you want everyone to see it. There is never an end to flyer uses.

Alongside today’s multimillion-dollar ad campaigns, the flyer seems miniscule, even puny. But such low-tech marketing just could be your key to success. ■

ALLIANCE LAUNDRY SYSTEMS TO EXPAND MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS

Alliance Laundry Systems announced Sept. 14 a planned $23 million investment to increase production capacity for current and new products, and to purchase tooling and equipment for its Ripon, Wis., plant.

The expansion will add more than 20,000 square feet to the existing assembly, metal stamping and press shop facilities. Plus, it will add more than 250 skilled jobs to the company’s 1,300-member Ripon workforce.

Alliance expects the project, which will not impact ongoing machine production, to be completed by the summer of 2013.

It is expected to increase Alliance’s production capacity for small-chassis washers and dryers by more than 40%, ensuring that it will be able to meet increasing customer demands for what the company calls “the most reliable and durable products available on the market today.”

“Alliance Laundry is experiencing unprecedented growth across our product portfolio,” says Mike Schoeb, the company’s president/CEO. “Demand for our small-chassis products, domestically and internationally, is driving this phase of our expansion strategy. We have the best distribution network in the industry, and our customers depend on us to deliver outstanding equipment on schedule. This expansion will guarantee that we can continue to meet that expectation.”

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. approved up to $1.5 million in tax credits for the project, and the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corp.’s County Special Allocation Revolving Loan Fund has provided a $500,000 performance-based loan.

The WEDC incentive is tied directly to job creation. It will distribute tax credits to Alliance annually in direct relation to the number of jobs retained over a 54-month period, based on the number of new, full-time positions created.

STATEWIDE MACHINERY IS NEWEST IPSO COIN/OPL DISTRIBUTOR

Statewide Machinery Inc., Rochester, N.Y., has secured the distribution rights for IPSO coin and on-premise laundry equipment in 14 counties located in New York state and Pennsylvania, the company reports.

The new territory allows Statewide Machinery to increase its distribution footprint, plus add a quality product line from Alliance Laundry Systems to its portfolio of equipment offerings, the company says.

Statewide Machinery distributes various brands of laundry and other equipment in 53 counties in Upstate New York and eight counties in northern Pennsylvania.

CLEAN SHOW RELAXES RULES RESTRICTING AFFILIATE MEETINGS

The Clean Executive Committee (CEC) has unveiled a new Clean Show mission statement that it believes reflects and promotes the exchange of new ideas before, during and after the event.

A thorough review of all aspects of the every-other-year show led the group to adopt the following: “The Clean Show provides a global forum for bringing together garment and textile care services professionals for the purpose of sharing ideas, business practices and the latest products, services and innovations as well as raising the level of professionalism in the industry.”

In keeping with the spirit of this statement, the CEC has relaxed certain rules regarding the convening of affiliate groups during trade show hours. In the past, meetings were restricted to hours outside education and exhibit hours (which traditionally run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), but now exhibiting companies and industry associations can schedule their sales, distributor or group meetings during educational sessions or between the hours of noon and 2 p.m.

David Cotter, CEO of the Textile Care Allied Trades Association and chairman of the 2013 Clean Show in New Orleans, supports the new direction. “We believe the new rules will support an environment where exhibitors and attendees can conduct business and meet with others more freely.”

The CEC is comprised of representatives from the five sponsoring associations, including the Coin Laundry Association.

The New Orleans Morial Convention Center will host the Clean Show on June 20-22, 2013. More than 400 companies are expected to exhibit.

PARADISE LAUNDRY GOES ‘TOPLESS’ IN NEW STORE

When Paradise Laundry Inc. chose to open a third store in Roseville, Calif., it decided that it would be topless—minus top loaders, that is.

For more than 20 years, the coin laundry known as the “Laundry Basket” had been primarily a top-loader store (17 of 23 washers were of the top-load variety). But when Paradise Laundry owner Deborah Dower decided to buy and renovate the site, she elected to go entirely with Dexter front-load washers, 14 of them.

“An older top-loading washer can use up to 42 gallons of water to wash one load, which is more than twice as much water of a high-efficiency (HE) front-load washer,” says Dower, whose business was honored recently by the Sacramento Board of Supervisors for its sustainability and water conservation.

Many California cities have been hit with double-digit water and sewer rate increases due to the need to replace aging underground pipes, according to Dower.

“Recognizing water and sewer rates are going to continue to increase, we decided at this new location we would not even offer top-load washers,” she explains. “Instead, we would put in doublecapacity front-load washers and price them the same as a top load. My worst fear is for someone to come in, take a look, see we don’t have any top-load machines, then turn around and walk out. We are hopeful the equivalent pricing will give them incentive to try the high-efficiency washers.”

Paradise Laundry hosted a grand-opening celebration at its Cirby Way store on Sept. 19. ■
