THREE-QUARTERS OF LAUNDRY

OWNERS PLEASED WITH STORE’S OVERALL CONDITION

Nearly three-quarters of laundry operators are pleased with the overall condition of their stores, according to the results of February’s AmericanCoinOp.com Wire survey, and many point to their equipment and cleanliness as the primary reasons.

Approximately 73% say they are pleased with their store’s condition, 23.1% are not pleased, and 3.8% are unsure.

What’s your store’s best feature? Among respondents, it’s primarily having equipment that’s “always operational” (40.7%) or the store being “very clean” (33.3%). Others pointed to having a “great equipment mix” (11.1%), the “best attendants” (7.4%), or the “lowest prices around” (3.7%).

Opinions are mixed when it comes to singling out their store’s weakest point. While respondents were presented with seven common possible answers, the largest percentage (33.3%) say it was something else: not having enough interior space, finding the right advertising source, lacking parking space, outdated lighting or not having Wi-Fi service, for example.

Nearly 19% say their store’s weakest point is having high prices, 14.8% say it’s being unattended, and 11.1% say they struggle to keep it clean. Equal shares of 7.4% point to a lack of varying equipment sizes, not offering extra services, and lacking customer amenities.

When respondents visit another coin laundry, the first thing that most of them (48.1%) notice is whether the business is clean or dirty. For 22.2%, the first thing they look at is the number of people doing laundry there. Equal shares of 11.1% are looking at equipment mix or if there are out-of-order signs, and the remaining 7.4% have their eye on the store’s look.

If they were given funding to make one major improvement, 55.6% of respondents would add some new washers/dryers. Roughly 15% would give their store’s interior a face-lift (new paint, tile, lighting, etc.), and 11.1% would add customer amenities (such as seating, a lounge area, air conditioning, TV, etc.).

Smaller shares would hire extra help, bring in a maintenance person to fine-tune their operation, or something else.

While the Wire survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific. Subscribers to Wire e-mails are invited to take the industry survey anonymously online each month. All vended laundry owners and operators are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and industry trends.

Maytag ConCept StoreS Debut in north aMeriCa

Seven new Maytag® Equipped Laundry stores have opened since the brand launched in May and Maytag® Commercial Laundry says more are on the way.

The company introduced the concept store after recognizing the market need for “a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing and branded store.”

“The Maytag brand is the No. 1 preferred and most recognized brand in laundry,” says Randy Karn, national sales manager. “We saw a void in the market and are now delivering a concise, welldeveloped concept store built on the 100-plus year equity of the Maytag brand.”

Maytag® Equipped Laundries are open for business in Salisbury, Pa.; Lackawanna and Addison, N.Y.; Haledon, N.J.; Mississauga, Ont., Canada; Calera, Ala.; and Laurinburg, N.C.

At press time, another eight stores were scheduled to be finished by the end of February.

Scott Rider, owner of the Lackawanna store, calls the Maytag® Equipped Laundry store program “the complete package.”

“Albert has an extensive sales experience, and his understanding of field sales is a perfect fit for us,” says Alex Badea, Summit Laundry Equipment vice president.

In his new role, Ludwigson will work with local Laundromat owners to improve efficiency and upgrade laundry equipment as needed.

aMeriCan Dryer Corp. reaLignS SaLeS reSponSibiLitieS American Dryer Corp. (ADC) has realigned its domestic sales

responsibilities to take advantage of an expanding market to various corporate initiatives, the company reports. The realignment includes the addition of Richard “Rick” Murphy as Western regional sales manager, who will cover various states in the West as well as western Canada.

Murphy specializes in sales of technical products and brings more than 20 years of experience in new business development and distribution channel sales. Most recently, he managed North American sales for Money Controls, a United Kingdom-based company that manufactures electronic cash-handling systems for the self-service industry.

Chris Brick, who has been spearheading ADC’s launch of its vended washer program, now oversees distribution sales for all ADC products in various states in the East, while Corey Simonson continues to manage ADC’s Midwest and Eastern Canadian sales.

“Our growing position in the various laundry segments over the last few years has called for an expansion of our factory sales coverage,” says Tony Regan, senior vice president of sales and marketing for ADC. “Adding salespeople provides our customers with a resource and keeps us focused on continuing the exciting growth in 2013 and beyond.”

in MeMoriaM: norvin L. peLLerin, peLLerin MiLnor Corp. Norvin L. Pellerin, retired president and CEO of Pellerin Milnor Corp., died Feb. 11. He was 86.

“Norvin took pride in offering the very best to his customers, family, and friends throughout the world,” the company says. “He was a true visionary, who held 18 patents for various laundry machinery and pioneered top-transfer continuous batch washing. … Norvin’s design and engineering expertise, as well as his leadership, revolutionized the laundry industry.”

Pellerin won many awards, including Tulane University’s School of Engineering Alumnus of the Year in 1996, the National Association of Institutional Linen Management (now ALM) Hall of Fame in 1998, The Rudolph Maglin Lifetime Achievement Award for Associate Members from TRSA in 2004, and the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame Laureate in 2012.

Surviving Pellerin are his wife of 63 years, Sue; two sons, Jim Pellerin and Curtis Pellerin; two daughters, Julie Bukrey and Renee Gordon; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans (5100 Orleans Ave., New Orleans, LA 70124) or the Willis and Mildred Pellerin Foundation that awards merit-based college scholarships (P.O. Box 400, Kenner, LA 70063).
