10 BETTER BUSINESS

A majority of distributors polled in this year’s American Coin-Op distributor survey enjoyed better business than the previous year.

Sixty percent of survey respondents said business— including the sales of newly constructed self-service laundries, and replacement business—was better in 2012 than it was in 2011. And 61.8% predict that 2013 sales will be better than 2012’s.

Industry averages for the numbers of top loaders, front loaders and dryer pockets by store, as well as the average size and selling price of a newly constructed store, are among the nuggets you’ll mine from our analysis of 2012 distributor business.

Who Ya gonna call?

2013 Distributors Directory

My wife recently upgraded our cable TV package at home (her idea, not mine, but I’m not complaining), and so I was clicking through the many new channels available to us when I heard these familiar lyrics: “Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!”

Now, I doubt you’ve ever had problems with ectoplasm in your pipes or with spirits creeping around your store late at night, but there are times when every small-business owner encounters a situation or problem that can’t be handled alone.

That’s when coin laundry owners are likely to call on their friendly neighborhood distributor. Whether it be offering equipment selection, spare parts, operational analysis, repair services, store design suggestions, or something else, coin laundry distributors represent an important lifeline to the coin-op owner who wants to keep everything running smoothly.

But how can you locate the nearest distributor? Why, by referring to this edition of American Coin-Op, our annual Distributors Directory issue, of course.

You will find detailed listings for hundreds of companies that furnish coin laundry owners like you with equipment and supplies—everything you need to make your business as profitable as it can be.

The distributors are listed alphabetically by state, then city, then company name.

Distributors, if you discover that your business isn’t listed (we solicit information for the listings exclusively via e-mail now), you can address that immediately. E-mail Digital Media Director Nathan Frerichs (nfrerichs@americantrade magazines.com) to learn how your distributorship can be added to our free online directory at AmericanCoinOp.com and to next year’s print edition.

Store owners, keep this issue close. The next time a crisis arises, there will be no question about who to call.

HALF OF COIN-OP OWNERS CALL RECESSION RESISTANCE A MYTH

Nearly half of coin laundry store owners polled (49.5%) do not believe in the notion that the self-service laundry industry is “recession-resistant,” according to data from September’s American Coin-Op Your Views survey.

“People can find all kinds of ways to cut laundry spending––wash at a friend or relative’s, hang clothes to dry, wear clothes longer … [and] cram six loads in a four-load machine,” says one store owner.

While a small portion was not sure if the industry is “recessionresistant” (9.7%), 40.9% considered the idea a “reality.”

Store owners were also asked if “one person can run as many as four stores” without hiring assistance. Roughly 44% say that the idea is a “reality,” while 37.6% say it is a “myth.” Roughly 18% were not sure.

An overwhelming majority believe that a “well-kept laundry reduces [a store’s] chances of being vandalized” (75.3%). While 17.2% considered the idea a “myth,” 7.5% were not sure.

“People come into my laundry expecting to find a dump, [but] it is clean and [has] no out-of-order signs,” says a store owner.

In advertising their business, 78.5% of store owners believe that word-of-mouth advertising is the “best form of laundry advertising,” while 14.0% say that it is a “myth.” Only 7.5% of store owners were not sure.

Store owners also weighed in on the industry’s “future” myths and realities.

When asked if the dollar coin will have a “major impact” in the next five years, 39.8% say that the idea is only “myth,” while 32.3% were not sure. Only 28% say that the dollar coin will impact the industry in a major way by 2018.

Store owners also forecast that “fewer, but larger, laundries” will be a “reality” in the next decade (58.1%), while 25.8% were unsure. Roughly 16% say the notion is only a “myth.”

“My favorite myth is that you can operate a store as an absentee owner in six to eight hours per week,” says one respondent.

“My favorite myth is that anyone can run a laundry,” says another store owner. “You must have the self-drive to get up every day and do the rounds and be vigilant.”

While American Coin-Op’s Your Views survey presents a snapshot of the audience’s viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific. Subscribers to American CoinOp e-mails are invited to participate anonymously in an industry survey each month.

SURVEY SAYS: Distributor Business

Better in 2012, Arrow Continues Pointing Upward for ’13

A majority of distributors polled in this year’s American Coin-Op Distributor Survey enjoyed better business than the previous year and is expecting overall sales in 2013 to beat those of 2012.

Sixty percent of survey respondents said business—including the sales of newly constructed self-service laundries, and replacement business—was better in 2012 than it was in 2011. And 61.8% predict that 2013 sales will be better than 2012’s.

Approximately 14% said business was worse in 2012 than 2011, and 25.7% said business was comparable in both years.

Every distributor listed in the American CoinOp Distributors Directory was invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2012 business and makes comparisons to previous years.

2012 BUSINESS

2010 was a bounce-back year for many distributors. The recovery continues its upward trajectory, with business reportedly improving year by year, according to the latest survey results.

This year, 60% of respondents said business was better in 2012 than 2011. In the 2012 survey, 55% said business was better in 2011 than 2010. In the 2011

survey, 46% said business was better in 2010 than 2009.

For those experiencing a change in business in 2012, the No. 1 reason was the economy. But depending on the distributor filling out the survey, it was either a positive or a negative.

Those who thrived were buoyed by the economic upturn, good customer service and better self-promotion, based on a sampling of individual responses.

Among distributors whose business suffered in 2012, there were complaints about poor financing opportunities and higher utility rates, for example.

REPLACEMENT BUSINESS

Replacement-business figures were comparable to the previous year’s report. In replacement business only, 51.4% said business was up last year compared to 2011. That’s compared to the 52.6% who saw their replacement business increase from 2010 to 2011, 39.3% who saw an increase from 2009 to 2010, and 20% who saw an increase from 2008 to 2009.

Roughly 14% saw replacement business fall in 2012, and 34.3% said their level of replacement business was unchanged from 2011.

NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION

American Coin-Op asked distributors how many new laundries they built and/ or to which they supplied equipment in 2012.

Nearly 55% of respondents built or supplied equipment to three or fewer new laundries last year, which is virtually identical to the 2012 survey results for 2011 business, roughly 54%.

The percentage was 56% in the 2011

survey for 2010 business and 62% in the 2010 survey for 2009 business.

How many new laundries did distributors deal with in some fashion in 2012? Here are the most popular answers from this year’s survey: 1) 1 2) 0 3) 3 4) 4 5) 2

Distributors were also asked if their 2012 new-construction total was more, less or the same when compared to 2011. Roughly 41% said new construction was up in 2012 (by comparison, that figure was approximately 39% in the 2012 survey for 2011 business, roughly 41% in 2011 survey for 2010 business and only 14% in 2010 survey for 2009 business), 35.3% said new construction was down, and 23.5% said new construction was the same in 2012 and 2011.

tion’s success, but overcrowding with equipment can be a detriment. For those of you thinking about adding a new store, or wondering what that new store down the street will be offering, here’s a quick look at what distributors are installing throughout the country.

Approximately 45% of the new stores had at least one top loader, significantly down from last year’s figure (58%). (It should be noted that a handful of respondents chose to skip the top-loader question on our online survey, so the actual figure could be a bit lower. It’s possible some respondents didn’t install any top loaders in 2012, and skipped the question as a result.)

More specifically, here are the most popular numbers of top loaders put into new stores in 2012: 1) 0 2) 10 3) 8 4) 6 5) 5

Newly constructed laundries in 2012 have 3.4 top loaders on average. (This figure factors in the stores with no top loaders.)

Here are the most common numbers of front loaders installed in newly constructed laundries last year: 1) 35 2) 30 3) 40 4) 10 5) 24

Newly constructed laundries in 2012 have an average of 28.0 front loaders. This is down vs. last year’s figure (30.0).

in 2012:

The average newly constructed laundry in 2012 has 30.8 dryer pockets. That’s compared to 34.1 dryer pockets in 2011.

Here are the most common numbers of dryer pockets installed in newly constructed laundries last year: 1) 40 2) 35 3) 50 4) 30 5) 15

DOES SIZE MATTER?

So, are small stores the way to go, or is having a larger store the growing trend?

Here are the most popular store sizes, in square feet, for those that were built in 2012: 1) 3,200 2) 2,000 3) 2,800 4) 2,100 5) 2,400

Approximately 19% of the newly constructed stores are 2,000 square feet or less. Roughly 52% are between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet, the same percentage as last year’s survey.

The largest laundry mentioned in the survey results is 9,000 square feet, and the smallest store is 880 square feet.

The average newly constructed store in 2012 covers 2,754 square feet. Some prior averages were 2,721 square feet (2011) 2,663 square feet (2010), 2,712 square feet (2009), 2,743 square feet (2008) and 3,200 square feet (2007).

The average selling price of a newly constructed store—not including the cost of land and building—in 2012 was $386,591. That’s compared to $366,000 a year earlier.

LOOKING BACK

If you built a store in 2012, how does it match up with the numbers from this survey? Here’s a quick equipment snapshot of newly constructed stores to give you some perspective.

The average newly constructed store in 2012 features 3.4 top loaders, 28.0 front loaders and 30.8 dryer pockets. It covers, on average, 2,754 square feet.

Here are the new-store profiles for the previous five surveys:

2011: 4.5 top loaders, 30.0 front loaders, 34.1 dryer pockets, and 2,721 square feet

2010: 3.8 top loaders, 26.9 front loaders, 32.1 dryer pockets, and 2,663 square feet.

2009: 5.7 top loaders, 27.3 front loaders, 32.6 dryer pockets, and 2,712 square feet.

2008: 5.8 top loaders, 27.8 front loaders, 32 dryer pockets, and 2,743 square feet.

2007: 6.7 top loaders, 27.7 front loaders, 35.2 dryer pockets, and 3,220 square feet.

Distributor Sales Projections

■ 61.8% expect 2013 sales to surpass 2012

■ 35.3% expect 2013 sales to be the same as 2012

■ 2.9% expect 2013 sales to fall short of 2012

DISTRIBUTOR ACTIVITIES

Twenty-nine percent of the distributors that responded broker self-service laundries (compared to 41% in last year’s survey). Roughly 38% of respondents (compared to 29% in the 2012 survey) operate some type of route laundry.

Are open houses or service schools a distributor offering that you find valuable? Roughly 62% of respondents plan to host some type of open house or service school in 2014, compared to 56% in last year’s survey (you can check on upcoming distributor events 24/7 at AmericanCoinOp. com; click the “Calendar” tab).

ON THE HORIZON

So, are distributors optimistic or pessimistic about 2013 overall sales?

Approximately 62% expect 2013 sales to surpass those of 2012. Roughly 35% expect overall sales this year to be the same as last year. Just 2.9% believe that 2013 business will be worse than 2012 totals.

an outsider’s view

Cautious, CustomerFriendly ColleCtions

I was in a Laundromat one busy Saturday morning when the owner came in to make his collections. I noticed that he had to ask several customers to interrupt doing their laundry so that he could open the washer or dryer and collect the money.

When he finished, I asked him if that was the best time to do the chore. “It’s my shop,” he tells me. “I do it when it’s convenient for me. Besides, crowded times are safe. There’s no chance of being robbed. So, sure, a busy Saturday morning is a great time to do my collections.

“It is also an opportunity to meet my customers. Nothing is more important than getting to know your customers, right?”

I got to thinking about his answer. And my conclusion is that he is wrong. Moreover, I wonder how many others out there are collecting money at inappropriate times. Therefore, I’ve evolved these three rules of collection:

RULE NO. 1: NEVER COLLECT DURING BUSY TIMES

Never collect during busy times. It’s too intrusive. It makes customers work around you, not the other way around. Furthermore, it’s sheer bad business to be han-

dling money in a middle of a workday.

Finally, it’s rather gauche to be handling money while many customers are seeing their hard-earned funds go in your pockets. It’s like an enormously fat man eating a 12-course meal. It’s like the merchant behind the counter counting his money. It’s kind of rude, and it puts a negative spin on doing business with you.

At the Laundromat I visited, I didn’t exactly hear any frustrated comments toward this owner but I noticed customers’ facial expressions. And if I could put words to the expressions, they would go like this:

Boy, what a rude guy to interrupt us and get in our way while we are trying to get our laundry done. He interrupted every single person in this row. And he pushed that little old woman to get to her machine. He shows no consideration at all.

Furthermore, he seemed to lord it over us, as if to say, ‘I’m the king here, and you will make way for me. After all, I own the place.’ And he didn’t even say hello. Sure, he’ll take our money, but we’re just nobodies who help him fill his pot of gold. I don’t think I’ll come here anymore.

That’s the reason you don’t do your collections during busy times. You’ll annoy customers; some will be so put out, they won’t return to your store.

Let’s rewind the scenario. Suppose the owner wasn’t put-offish. Suppose he was friendly, laughing and joking with everyone as he pulled out money trays. Would that have made a difference? Yes, he would be more of a mensch, but still he would be interrupting, and that wouldn’t work well with customers. Many people still would have been annoyed.

So being a friendly guy, wanting to meet your customers, is no excuse for doing the work on your own time. Make your collections chore customer-friendly by doing it while they are not there.

RULE NO. 2: VARY COLLECTION TIMES

Mix up the times you cash out. For one thing, it’s safer. If someone was watching you, and saw that you cashed out at 9 every night, they could plan a robbery around that fact. Sure, you’d prefer even-hourly units for your collections, but variation to prevent problems is a more paramount consideration.

Second, mixing up your times allows you to observe your store at different times. This is especially crucial if

32 AmericAn coin-op OCTOBER 2013 www.americancoinop.com Image licensed by Ingram Publishing
Howard Scott

your shop is unattended. You will learn.

For instance, going at night, you could see that a rougher element hanging around out front scares away potential customers. If you only cashed out in the early-morning hours, you would never know this.

If you only cashed out after the store closed, you might not know that the 3-to-6 time slot is busiest and could do with an attendant during those times (possibly you could be that attendant).

You might never discover that the store is dirty at night because the afternoon attendant isn’t doing her cleaning, if you only cashed out at 5 p.m.

You learn something every time you enter your store with fresh eyes. Give yourself the opportunity for wide sampling. Vary your collection schedule. Obviously, the best times to do collections are early in the morning, while closing, and at slow times during the day. Figure out a varied pattern during these slots.

RULE NO. 3: MAKE THE COLLECTION CHORE AS INNOCUOUS AS POSSIBLE

Be as “invisible” as you can. Don’t brag, don’t tell customers that you are the owner, and don’t let cash be visible.

Frankly, it’s also a good idea to keep your talking to a minimum. It’s distracting. Focus on the task. Keep scrupulous records, but

don’t do it in plain sight. If you have a small office, go in there to do your paperwork. If your office is at home, go there.

If you assign collections to a staffer, instruct him or her to follow the rules I’ve described. It is not OK for the staffer to do collections during heavy-use periods because they’re too busy to do it any other time. They must somehow find the time during slower periods to do the chore.

You could set up the rule that they can cash out only when the machines are unoccupied, but this means keeping records. The attendant will take the cash from machines 3, 4 and 5, mark this down, and go on. When machines 1 and 2 are unoccupied, the attendant would go back and pull out cash from those machines. This is perfectly acceptable, as long as the attendant is detailminded.

It’s obvious that collecting is a vital function. Not only is it your revenue stream, but laggard collections could fill up the boxes, disabling machines.

Still, make the task as unobtrusive as possible. The less that customers see it being done, the better off you’ll be. ■

ESD has announced the launch of a new smartphone app, enabling laundry customers to pay for their load, and utilize a washer or dryer at a participating ESDequipped laundry.

Upon downloading the app from the Google Play app store, the customer will obtain a magnetic stripe card from a VTM in the Laundromat where they plan to use the app. The customer then identifies their chosen Laundromat location in the app, and will be asked to scan the QR code on the back of their purchased magnetic stripe card. Value can be added to the card at the store VTM using cash or credit, or with a debit or credit card online via an ESD-created website.

On the face of every washer and dryer will be an assigned QR code that the cus-

tomer will scan with the app. Upon scanning, various pricing options for washes or dry cycles will be displayed on the customer’s smartphone. Once a wash or dry cycle has been selected, the customer can start the machine via the app, which will also display the time remaining to complete the cycle. The customer’s smartphone will vibrate to signal that his or her load has finished.

The app can indicate which machines in the Laundromat are currently available or in use, plus show a summary page detailing the customer’s balance and rewards points earned. It also provides store owners the capability to send direct messages and marketing promotions.

Huebsch has expanded its washerextractor product line with the release of the HCN100, a 100-pound frontload washer-extractor with eBoost™ technology for vended laundry owners.

The washer-extractor will allow Laundromat owners to command a higher vend price than smaller-capacity machines, and takes up the same amount of room as an 80-pound machine, the company says.

Featuring the company’s eBoost™ technology, the HCN100 uses 33% less electrical energy and 11% less water than two-speed models, the company says, and also includes the patented Water Guardian leak detection feature, which detects leaks in both the drain and fill valves.

Also featured is the company’s Galaxy™ 600 control, which allows for multilevel vend pricing, enabling store owners to increase revenue per cycle, while time-of-day pricing helps increase turns during slow times, the company says.

With the feature, customers can also tailor wash cycles for an additional price.

When combined with a card payment system, the control allows customers to ease into vend increases pennies at a time, the company adds.

Store owners can also retrieve machine data via a PDA or laptop with the Galaxy™ 600 control feature.

Maytag Commercial Laundry has announced its new commercial laundry management tool, Maytag Connect 360°™, a web-based laundry room communication and management system designed for coin stores, universities and multi-housing applications.

Whether at home, traveling or in a remote location, the tool allows laundry owners to retrieve information on money collection and analyze usage patterns; remotely set up and modify vending prices; review cycle data and predict maintenance needs; and receive service code notifications that can be forwarded to a service technician, according to the company.

Maytag Connect 360°™ is enabled by a small exterior module that fits current Maytag Commercial Laundry models, or can be retrofitted to work with older units, the company says.

“The power behind this system gives owners ultimate freedom and flexibility when it comes to managing laundry operations,” says Bob English, general manager at Maytag Commercial Laundry. “And, customers or tenants will benefit from Maytag Connect 360°™ as well. The exclusive technology allows users to receive alerts regarding completed wash and dry cycles and machine availability.”

LaundryLux Offers disaster recOvery aid tO cOLOradO cOin-Ops Laundry equipment distributor Laundrylux is offering a disaster recovery program to Colorado self-service laundry owners whose stores were impacted by flood damage last month, the company reports.

Laundrylux says that the program includes no payments and no interest for up to 120 days, plus low fixed interest rates, and that it will “waive all fees” to help laundry-owner customers rebuild their businesses.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Colorado,” says Neal Milch, CEO of Laundrylux. “We understand what you are going through and want to do our part to help. We are working hand-in-hand with Advanced Laundry Systems of Colorado to make it as affordable as possible for self-service laundry owners, as well as business owners, such as hotels, nursing homes, long-term care, and other facilities, to get the equipment they need right away.”

Advanced Laundry Systems, distributor of Electrolux and Wascomat Professional Laundry equipment, has been in the Denver metro area for 20 years, Laundrylux says.

dexter Launches ‘new and expanded’ website

Dexter Laundry has launched a “new and expanded” website, featuring an “updated look” and “comprehensive product information” about the manufacturer’s commercial and on-premise laundry equipment, the company says.

Product information, specifications and artwork are available for end-users, distributors, new investors and repair technicians, while potential laundry owners can find “detailed articles on how to invest in coin laundry and on-premise laundry solutions.”

Newly added features include a parts “look-up” and comprehensive troubleshooting tool to allow customers to diagnose and perform their own basic machine maintenance, according to the company.

Dexter has also relaunched its Financial Services website, offering visitors the ability to apply online for Dexter Laundry equipment financing, as well as a new loan/lease payment calculator.

cLean shOw 2015 tO return tO fOur-day fOrmat

The Clean Show will return to a four-day format for its 2015 show, scheduled now for Thursday through Sunday, April 16-19, 2015, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, reports Riddle & Associates, the show’s longtime management firm.

“The positive feedback we’ve received on Clean 2013 has been overwhelming. In visiting with exhibitors, attendees and the show partners, it was clear that the best way to build upon that success was to add a day to the schedule,” says Clean Executive Committee Chairman Brian Wallace.

“People are going to be pleasantly surprised at how much Atlanta has changed since the Clean Show was last held in the city in 1987,” says John Riddle, show manager. “It is a major destination with so much to see and do.”

express cOin Laundry adds new LOcatiOn in sOuthern caLif. Dan Brinderson, owner of Southern California-based Express Coin Laundry, is on a continued growth path, as he recently added a location in Santa Ana, Calif., to his chain of seven coinoperated Laundromats in the area.

Brinderson reached out to Steve Erlinger of distributor Western State Design to outfit all of his store’s locations, which include machines such as Dexter Express coin-operated equipment.

Brinderson’s attention to customers’ needs and wants has played a key role in the success of his stores, according to Western State Design.

In addition to utilizing Dexter equipment, Brinderson also provides other customer amenities, including video games, free Wi-Fi and flatscreen TVs, as well as hosting regular gift-card and TV giveaways.

“Keeping his coin-operated laundry service filled with customers who return for the quality experience has ensured steady growth for Brinderson’s business,” the distributor says.

wash Laundry systems acquires universaL Laundries WASH Multifamily Laundry Systems, a laundry facilities management service for multi-housing locations, has acquired Chicagobased route laundry company Universal Laundries.

“Universal Laundries’ solid presence in the Chicagoland area increases our market density in the Midwest region, which has grown in recent years following other acquisitions, including Great Lakes Commercial Laundry based in Wisconsin, and Automatic Apartment Laundries Inc. of Michigan,” says Adam Coffey, WASH president/CEO.

Universal Laundries’ managing partner, Robert Ilg, will remain involved in the business’ operations, according to WASH. His father, Paul Ilg, founded Universal Laundries in 1946, and the company has become “known for its prompt laundry equipment servicing and preventative maintenance scheduling.”
