In an April 2020 study by Mastercard, 79% of respondents worldwide say they are now using contactless payments, citing safety and cleanliness as key drivers. Further, in 2021 Visa expects that there will be more than 300 million contactless cards in the hands of American consumers.

The optimist in me believes that you save every issue of American Coin-Op. The realist in me knows that probably isn’t the case. But if there ever was a month to set aside a particular issue, this is it.
Our annual Buyer’s Guide is the definitive resource for boosting your purchasing power by connecting you with leading vendors serving the self-service laundry industry. We list more than 140 companies this time around.
We supply everything you need to know—phone numbers (local and toll-free, when provided), website addresses and email addresses—to contact a vendor. There’s even a principal contact person listed if one was identified.
Our Buyer’s Guide begins on page 6 with the Products Directory—categorical listings of companies that manufacture or supply equipment, signage, software, furniture and more, or provide unique services to self-service laundry owners or investors like you.
When you identify a vendor that interests you, you can learn how to contact that company in the Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory beginning on page 12. Companies are listed alphabetically.
May I ask for a favor? When you call on a vendor, please mention that American Coin-Op guided you to them.

BUYER’S GUIDE 2021
We are pleased to present the 39th annual American Coin-Op Buyer’s Guide, published exclusively for selfservice laundry operators.
To use the guide, simply look up the name of a product or service in the Products Directory and then turn to the Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory beginning on page 12 for information on how to contact the various companies that make the specific product or provide the service.
In some cases, the Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory will also contain other coin laundry-related products or services not listed in the Products Directory.
The Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory contains addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and web addresses for the companies. When you call on one of them, let them know you read about them in American Coin-Op.
Keep this issue handy, because the next Buyer’s Guide print edition won’t be published until next year.
(But this information is available whenever you need it via our website, AmericanCoinOp.com.)

DOES A STORE NAME REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
So, you’ve done your due diligence and decided to pull the trigger on opening a new mat. What store name is best for your particular market?
It depends on your strategy. But first, know this: 21% of adults in the United States (about 43 million) are functionally illiterate, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. Since Laundromats cater to a customer base that is low-income, the illiteracy percentage probably goes up among that group.
And I wonder how many immigrants add to those numbers simply because they don’t speak English. (Tip: Use a translation app on your cell phone to speak with your non-English-speaking customers.)
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
How do you attract eyeballs that will be able to identify what kind of business they are passing? Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
If your mat is in a market like New York City, bilingual signs don’t cut it because so many different languages are spoken in that area.
Include a logo in your sign that looks like a washer. It could even be a photo imprinted on your signs.
A lot of mats built in New York in the ’80s had signs with a drawing of three washers in descending order: a giant, a triple, and a double loader.
I’ve seen the “retro” look where some mats use a washboard as a logo, but some immigrants may not understand that modern washing machines, not scrub
boards, can be found inside.
Make sure your windows are not blocked, and that your mat is well-lit inside so people can see what kind of store they are passing 24/7.
INDUSTRY, BUSINESS, TRADE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
There are various styles of Laundromat industry names used all over the map. Here are some of the most common ones:
• Laundromat
• Laundry
• Coin-Op (hence, this magazine)
• Launderette
• Laundrymat
• Washateria, in Texas, named after the first Laundromat that opened there in 1934.
• Wash & Dry; I remember reading years ago about a mat that just had that phrase for its main sign. The owner said it worked well, but I think that may depend on a particular market.
A business name is the legal company name that you registered with the government.
Also called a DBA (“doing business as”), a trade name is the name used to operate the business. If your legal company name is satisfactory to show on all your signs and advertising, then you don’t need a DBA. However, you may be able to get a better name with a DBA.
NAMING STRATEGIES FOR BRANDING YOUR MAT
Subconscious motivations can make a difference. Did you know that the vast majority of analog clocks for sale are always advertised set at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to create an image of a smile? Stores do that because a smile creates a good feeling. I do think that even a name that is a little corny could be a draw if it is easy to remember and gives people a good feeling.
People often make decisions based on emotions rather than logic or common sense, I believe. Then we use our logic to justify our emotional response. Advertisers and politicians have known this for many decades. So if you can come up with a name that evokes a little positive energy, it can only help.
• Taking Over — If you are taking over a rundown, dirty mat that most of the neighborhood does not like, a new name is definitely the way to go.
However, if you are taking over a quality mat that already has a happy clientele, then do not change the
name! At least, not right away. Let them get to know you slowly. It may make sense to leave the name unchanged if the mat has a long, successful history using it. Make sure you can legally use the name when you buy the mat.
You can often use a DBA that is different than your company name, which is helpful. You can show a DBA to the public while keeping your company name under wraps. So if you want to change the name in the future, you can just change the DBA instead of having to rename the company behind it.
This is also a good strategy if you plan on opening more locations. You keep the DBA name on all your locations. If one location gets sued, the whole chain is not exposed to liability because each location should have a different corporation or LLC behind it.
• After a City — If the mat is located in a small- or mediumsized city, you may be able to name it after the city, if the name is not already taken (check not just in your immediate area but the entire state; if you incorporate, a name search will come with the process). Naming your mat after your city—for instance, Muskegon Laundromat, for the Michigan community—might inspire confidence and permanence.
• Get Personal — Naming your mat with your own name, first or last, also inspires confidence because people will think that you’re taking the business so personally that you’re putting your own name behind it. You’re personalizing your store, which does appeal to a lot of people.
So, it’s Betsy’s Laundromat or Tom’s Quick Wash Laundry. But if your name is Stinky, not good. (Or is it?)
• Completely Unrelated — Then there are the names that have nothing at all to do with the business. Believe it or not, this may be a good strategy to adopt.
When I was a teenager, I used to bring my new car to a family friend’s car wash named Happy Pumpkin Car Wash that included a big, smiling pumpkin on its sign. It was no different than any other car wash, except for the name and logo. I may not remember where I put my car keys yesterday but I still remember this car wash of my youth some 50 years later!
• Letters or Initials — I think the poorest naming choice is to use letters or initials that nobody but you will recognize or care about, such as R & Q Laundromat.
It’s hard enough for people to remember a name. Initials tend to get lost in people’s memories: “Is it R & Q, or Q & R?”
My feeling would be that the new owner didn’t give it much thought, which doesn’t inspire much confidence from me. If you want to choose a bank, would you choose R & Q Bank or Bank of America?
• Nothing to Distinguish It — What about there being no company name? Many mats use nothing other than an industry name like “Laundromat.” Short and sweet, simple and effective … as long as everyone who passes the store understands the word.
If you must go this route, add a logo, or make sure your mat’s interior can easily be seen from the street. Personally, I would not take this route nowadays because people want to look you up online, and how can they if there’s nothing more than “Laundromat”? How do they leave reviews?
• A Brand Name That Endures — If you think you will be www.americancoinop.com
opening more locations, you should consider a brand name that will endure in all your future locations. Therefore, using the name of a city or town may come back to bite you if you want to open in another town. Unless, of course, you plan on opening more only within your city.
I operated three mats within a 20-minute drive from each other. All three had the same DBA and logo. About 5% of customers would occasionally try a different location depending on circumstance (one closer to home but another closer to their job). Some customers, I would see at all three. Not many, but enough to add a few bucks that the chain normally wouldn’t have had if the stores weren’t linked by name.
In fact, I had interior signs that listed all three addresses, so people would be aware that there were other locations not too far away. On the rare occasion when we’d get shut down due to a utility interruption or need to close for renovations, we’d hand out business cards that listed all three locations.
PROTECT YOUR LOGO
Simply operating with your logo offers some legal protection (if it is not already in use) because it’s a common-law right.
An old trick is to send the logo to yourself via registered mail to establish a starting date. This way, you will have definitive proof that your logo was the first one if someone copies it. It’s probably not necessary nowadays since your online presence establishes a starting date.
If you hope to grow into other states, you’ll need to register a trademark nationally. It would be wise to seek the advice of legal counsel where trademarks and copyright law is concerned.
Did you know there are business name search engines that can help you name your business? Just Google “Laundromat business name search engines” and I think you’ll be surprised at what you might find.
And don’t forget search engine optimization (SEO) when you choose that laundry name. Google “web friendly business name search engines.”
The name you choose will be with you and your laundry business for a long time. It’s important to give it some extra thought because the name can make a difference!

RKU STANDARD ACQUIRES STANDARD CHANGE-MAKERS
Standard Change-Makers Inc., a manufacturer of currency change machines and car wash entry systems, reports that it has been purchased by RKU Standard Inc., under the direction of Rob and Kathleen Unterborn. Both companies are based in Indianapolis. The deal was effective Feb. 1, and terms were not announced.
Standard Change-Makers had been owned by the McNutt family since James R. McNutt Sr. founded it in 1955. Jim McNutt Jr., who has served in various capacities since 1977, took over as president/CEO in 1992.
The new owner, Rob Unterborn, has served as Standard ChangeMakers’ vice president and chief financial officer since 2016, and became chief operating officer in 2018.
McNutt Jr. will serve as chairman of the board of the new company that will continue to operate as Standard Change-Makers Inc.
“We said from the start that the only way we would move forward is if Jim, Sandy and Rob McNutt would continue to be part of our Standard team,” says Unterborn, now president/CEO. “Their experience and knowledge of the industries we serve and the day-to-day operations are an important part of who and what we are as a company.”
All current management and team members will continue to serve in their present capacities. The regional sales team includes Dan Wagner leading efforts in the Eastern states, Tom Kozlik in the Western states, and Paul Thompson in Canada.
“This store certainly showcases to new investors the exceptional quality and aesthetics that are part of this model. It will change perceptions of what people think a Laundromat looks like.”
Touchscreen controls, app-based payment, and rewards programs for frequent customers are among the store’s cutting-edge technology. Fast, efficient washer-extractors and tumble dryers offer customers exceptional flexibility to tailor cycles, while getting them in and out in an hour, all in a clean, well-lit environment with vibrant colors, according to Bowe.
Leveraging the brand’s 110-plus years of industry experience and branding as well as off-site management technology, Speed Queen Laundromat franchises enable investors to tap into the average return on investment of 30% that vended laundries offer, the brand says.
EASTERN FUNDING PROMOTES ROBLES TO CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Financial lender Eastern Funding, based in New York City, has appointed Nancy Robles its chief operating officer, the company reports.
Robles, who previously served as the company’s executive vice president of operations and compliance officer, will be responsible for day-to-day operational and administrative functions. She will continue to report to President Michael Fanger.
“I am proud to have one of the top women in equipment and commercial financing anywhere as our chief operating officer,” says Fanger. “I am confident that she will continue to lead us to achieve greater operational excellence.”
Robles joined Eastern Funding in 2005 from Fleet Healthcare Capital Leasing/Bank of America. During her tenure, she has managed the lender’s operations functions, including credit, compliance, documentation, funding, loan servicing, legal and work-out, and human resources.
SPEED QUEEN BUILDING FLAGSHIP FRANCHISE STORE IN CHICAGO
Speed Queen is constructing a Chicago flagship store supporting its Laundromat franchise model, the Alliance Laundry Systems brand reports.
The store located at 6808 W. Grand Ave. on Chicago’s Northwest Side will open in the spring and offer 12,250 square feet of space, featuring washers with capacities ranging from a single load to 100 pounds and tumble dryers up to 45 pounds.
“While we have developed and perfected the Speed Queen Laundromat franchise over the last few years, it’s truly the result of our more than a century of industry leadership,” says Dan Bowe, general manager of North America franchising and retail operations for Speed Queen Laundromats.
As a Midwest company (Alliance Laundry Systems is based in Ripon, Wis.), it felt right to open the largest store in the Chicago area, he adds.
“I am thrilled to play such an important role in charting the course to greater success for our company,” Robles says of her promotion. “I will work to ensure that we continue to provide more innovative and best-in-class financing solutions to our customers. In addition, I will be relentless in making sure Eastern Funding remains a great place to work for our employees.”
CLA ADVOCATES FOR LAUNDROMAT WORKERS TO BE VACCINATED
The Coin Laundry Association is calling on state and local public health authorities to prioritize the vaccination of frontline workers at Laundromats to protect them from COVID-19 and ensure ongoing access to laundry services by the general public.
Laundromat workers have been deemed essential by both the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and every individual state that agree that Laundromats are essential.
“More than 120,000 essential Laundromat employees remain hard at work throughout the COVID crisis,” says Brian Wallace, CLA’s president and CEO. “They have been instrumental in delivering stepped-up disinfection and social distancing protocols – all
while providing clean clothes for tens of millions of families each and every week.”
According to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the next phase of immunization priority should focus on the critical infrastructure workforce. Along with such sectors as grocery, public transit and education, frontline workers at Laundromats provide an important public service.
CLA says it’s ready to assist health authorities in reaching Laundromat workers as well as those families who visit the Laundromats. Based on proximity to need and weekly contact with at-risk populations, Laundromats can serve as an efficient connection to hard-to-reach families with public health information and even access to vaccines, the Association adds.

“The first Phoenix location has been well-received, and the additional location will fill a similar need,” says Tim Guenther, co-owner of both Arizona locations.
In Wisconsin, construction is under way on a Clean Laundry store on Miller Park Way. It will be the second location in the state, joining a Madison store that opened in May 2020.

The brand now operates under the Clickstop Inc. parent company, with over 20 locations across the country.
