Given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on day-today life since early 2020, you might expect that laundry disributor business may have suffered a bit last year. Nearly 46% of distributors polled in the 2021 American Coin-Op Distributors Survey say their total business—including sales of newly constructed vended laundries and replacement business—was better in 2020 than in 2019. Even so, that’s some 21 percentage points lower than the year before.

Given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on day-to-day life since early 2020, you might expect that laundry distributor business may have suffered a bit last year.

Nearly 46% of distributors polled in the 2021 American Coin-Op Distributors Survey say that their total business— including sales of newly constructed vended laundries and replacement business—was better in 2020 compared to 2019. That’s some 21 percentage points lower than the year before.

Roughly 36% of respondents say their 2020 business was worse than 2019’s, while 18.2% say that business held steady compared to the prior year.

As for how distributors expect their 2021 overall sales will compare to those in 2020, 56.5% think things will be looking up, 21.7% believe their year-to-year sales will be unchanged, and 21.7% think their 2021 sales will be worse than 2020’s.

Distributors listed in the previous edition of the American CoinOp Distributors Directory were invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2020 business and makes comparisons to previous years. In this summary report, percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding.

2020 BUSINESS

This year, 45.5% of distributors who were polled said business was better in 2020 than 2019. That’s down from last year’s survey in which 67.7% of distributors said 2019 business was better than

2018’s. The share of distributors reporting better business compared to the prior year was 56.3% in the 2019 survey, 53.1% in the 2018 survey, 63.6% in the 2017 survey, and 67.4% in the 2016 survey.

Those describing their 2020 business as being “better” attributed their company’s performance to factors such as low financing rates; good service and product availability; new investors entering the marketplace; and a large pipeline of orders that were already in place from late 2019.

The share whose business suffered in 2020 blamed it on COVID-related issues such as local lockdowns; a large portion of the workforce working from home; lack of available financing; a lack of confidence from laundromat owners; and “government handouts.”

REPLACEMENT BUSINESS

The area of replacement business took a distinct hit last year, with just 31.8% of distributors polled saying their 2020 replacement business was up compared to 2019’s. Slightly more than 61% of distributors surveyed last year said that segment was up in 2019 compared to 2018.

In older surveys, the share was 58% in 2019, 68% in 2018, 62% in 2017 and 64% in 2016.

Roughly 41% of respondents say they saw 2020 replacement business decrease from that of 2019, while 27.3% say it remained unchanged.

NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION

American Coin-Op asked distributors to

list the number of new laundries they built and/or to which they supplied equipment in 2020.

In this year’s survey, the share of distributors that built and/or supplied equipment to three or fewer stores accounted for 47.8% of respondents. In comparison to previous surveys, that number was 51.7% in 2019, 58.6% in 2018, and 62.1% in 2017.

Companies building, or supplying equipment to, four or more new laundries in 2020 accounted for 52.2% of the total. That compares to 48.3% in 2019, 41.4% in 2018 and 37.9% in 2017.

The actual number of new laundries that distributors were involved with in some way in 2020 ranged from none to one respondent reporting his or her company dealt with 93 new stores.

Nearly 32% of distributors surveyed said their new-construction total was lower in 2020 than in 2019. Previous surveys showed 27% with lower totals in 2019 than in 2018, 22% in 2018 than in 2017, and 47% in 2017 than in 2016.

Roughly 23% of distributors polled said their new-construction total remained the same as 2019’s. That compares to 23% reporting no change in 2019 from 2018, 31% reporting no change in 2018 from 2017, and 30% in 2017 from 2016.

EQUIPMENT MIX

Wonder what equipment that distributors are installing in new stores across the country? Here’s a quick analysis on trends, based on this year’s survey results.

Just shy of 32% of new stores in 2020 had at least one top loader. Past survey percentages were 33.3% in 2019, 41% in 2018, and 33% in 2017.

Self-service laundries newly built in 2020 have an average of 2.4 top loaders, compared to 1.9 per new store in 2019, 3.1 in 2018, 2.5 in 2017, and 3.2 in 2016. (These figures factor in new stores with no top loaders.)

Breaking it down, following are the most popular number of top loaders installed in new stores in 2020:

When it comes to front loaders, vended laundries that were newly constructed in 2020 have an average of 28.5 machines. This compares to prior front-loader averages of 30.3 in 2019, 26.5 in 2018, 28.6 in

2017, and 33.3 in 2016.

The most common number of front loaders installed in newly constructed laundries in 2020 was:

2) 20, 30 and 45 (tie)

Vended laundries that were newly constructed in 2020 have an average of 33.5 dryer pockets. This compares to an average of 34.4 in 2019, 27.8 in 2018, 33.4 in 2017, and 39.1 in 2016.

Following are the most common number of dryer pockets installed in newly built laundries in 2020:

SURVEYING STORE SIZE

How do the new stores built in 2020 compare to earlier builds? Are they smaller and more manageable, or are they roomier?

The most popular store sizes, in square feet, reported in this year’s survey were:

1) 2,500

2) 3,000 and 3,500 (tie)

Stores constructed in 2020 that are 2,000 square feet or less account for 21.1% of the total, while 52.6% are between 2,001 and 3,000 square feet.

These figures compare to the 14.8% of stores measuring 2,000 square feet or less and the 48.1% covering between 2,001 and 3,000 square feet reported for 2019.

The largest newly constructed vended laundry built in 2020 was reported to cover 13,500 square feet, while the smallest measures just 700 square feet.

The average newly constructed vended laundry store for 2020 covers 2,845 square feet, which is slightly smaller than the 2,990-square-foot average of last year’s survey. Some prior averages are 2,948 (2018), 2,824 (2017), and 3,132 (2016).

On average, a newly built store sold for $429,563 in 2020 (distributors were asked to exclude the cost of land and building). Prior average sale prices were $497,864 (2019), $460,238 (2018), $520,045 (2017), and $558,097 (2016).

How do these numbers from 2020 com-

pare to distributor business performance in years past? Here is a quick recap of facts and figures.

The average newly constructed store in 2020 has 2.4 top loaders, 28.5 front loaders and 33.5 dryer pockets, and covers 2,845 square feet. Here’s how it compares to newstore profiles from the past few years:

• 2019: 1.9 top loaders, 30.3 front loaders, 34.4 dryer pockets, 2,990 square feet.

• 2018: 3.1 top loaders, 26.5 front loaders, 27.8 dryer pockets, 2,948 square feet.

• 2017: 2.5 top loaders, 28.6 front loaders, 33.4 dryer pockets, 2,824 square feet.

• 2016: 3.2 top loaders, 33.3 front loaders, 39.1 dryer pockets, 3,132 square feet.

OTHER BUSINESS

Distributors were also asked if their company brokers vended laundries. Roughly 44% of respondents to this year’s survey say they do, compared to 26% in 2020, 34% in 2019, 31% in 2018 and 34% in 2017.

Approximately 48% of distributors polled operate a route laundry. That compares to 51.6% last year, 40.6% in 2019, 50% in 2018, 38.6% in 2017 and 36.2% in 2016.

The share of distributors that host an annual equipment show (either virtual or in-person) is 52.2%. That compares to 54.8% last year, 47.7% in 2019, 50% in 2018, 47.7% in 2017 and 57.5% in 2016.

DISTRIBUTOR FORECAST

How do distributors feel about 2021 overall sales, especially as our country continues to deal with uncertain business conditions stemming from the pandemic? For 56.5% of respondents, 2021 sales are expected to be better than those of 2020’s, while 21.7% believe they will be about the same. WHIRLPOOL CORP. PROMOTES LIOTINE TO PRESIDENT, COO Whirlpool Corp., the parent company of Maytag Commercial Laundry and ADC, has promoted Joseph T. Liotine to president and chief operating officer. He took responsibility for all global Whirlpool operations on Sept. 1.

“I’ve had the good fortune of working with Joe for many years and I’m continually impressed with his strategic thinking related to the everyday execution of our business,” says Whirlpool Chairman and CEO Marc Bitzer. “He’s an exceptional leader with a clear vision to exponentially grow our brands around the world.”

Liotine had been executive vice president and president of Whirlpool’s North America Region since November 2014. Also, he had led both the Global KitchenAid Domestic Appliances business as well as Global Information Systems. Prior to this, he was president of U.S. operations and held a variety of roles with increasing responsibilities. He began his career with Whirlpool in 2004.

Liotine holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University.

Succeeding Liotine as executive VP and president of the North America Region is Winn Everhart. He joined Whirlpool in October

2020 as senior vice president overseeing U.S. commercial and business operations, including Brand and Strategy, Product Marketing, Sales, Consumer Services and Integrated Supply Chain.

In his new assignment, Everhart also joins Whirlpool’s Executive Committee.

“Winn has very quickly immersed himself in the industry and already demonstrated the leadership traits that will continue to accelerate our North America region forward,” Liotine says. “His strong general management skills and consumer experience orientation will help fuel our future growth and reinforce our portfolio with our consumers.”

Everhart spent nearly two decades at the Coca-Cola Co., where he most recently served as general manager for the company’s Philippines operations.

Everhart holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

“I have great confidence in both Joe’s and Winn’s ability to deliver on our mission of improving life at home for consumers around the world,” says Bitzer. “We are very well positioned to make an even greater impact in the years to come with their leadership.”

MR JEFF ROLLS OUT ITS 1ST LAUNDRY HUB IN NEW YORK CITY

International laundry service franchise Mr Jeff has opened its first U.S. flagship hub inside an existing Clean Rite location on Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York.

Mr Jeff — which says it has “modernized the tedious task of laundry” in more than 30 countries — provides customers with a new 24-hour express same-day wash and fold service and seamless home pickup and delivery mobile app-based services.

Existing self-service Clean Rite customers now have the option to drop off their dirty laundry and pick it up when it’s clean and folded, or, they can choose not to leave their homes at all by using the simple app-enabled pickup and delivery service.

The opening of the flagship Mr Jeff hub comes on the heels of the May announcement that the franchise had entered into a partnership with Clean Rite stores to operate inside select laundromats. The Clean Rite laundry service superstore chain has developed more than 200 locations across North America, in mainly densely populated, urban areas, Mr Jeff says.

The Queens store will be the first of four Clean Rites to launch tech-based Mr Jeff, greatly enhancing the convenience of laundry services for customers, says Peter Stern, the newly appointed managing director of Mr Jeff’s U.S. market and managing director of Clean Ventures, which invested in Mr. Jeff.

“Through integration with our existing technology platform Cents, Mr Jeff will provide Clean Rite customers with additional conveniences, including delivery and pickup services through the Mr Jeff app; wet cleaning and dry cleaning; ironing; pressing; and Mr Jeff monthly membership options,” Stern says.

CCI, CLEANCLOUD INTEGRATE TO BETTER SERVE LAUNDRY OWNERS

Card Concepts Inc. (CCI), based in Addison, Illinois, and CleanCloud POS, Delray Beach, Florida, report they have integrated their offerings to give laundromat owners “the best in self-service payment, point of sale software and business management.”

Atukwe Newell, owner of Chicago’s Bubbleland, says the two businesses have helped his business over the years.

“The integration between LaundryCard and CleanCloud allows our customers to pay with cash for WDF service across our stores without the security risks associated with a cash register,” Newell says.
