VOLUME 64 ISSUE 3
For 40-plus years, American Coin-Op has brought you an annual Buyer’s Guide. It’s the perfect starting point to seek out companies that manufacture or provide the equipment and supplies your laundry business relies on. Use our great resource to help you locate what you need in a snap!
The products and services that are vital to a vended laundry owner’s operation, along with a list of companies that provide them.
When you find a vendor of interest in our Products & Services directory, here is the key information you’ll need to contact them.
This list from Paychex outlines the most prominent compliancerelated topics employers will need to contend with this year.
The shipping expense and time in transit is an important factor when it comes to acquiring parts to keep laundry machinery in operation, writes guest columnist Barry Victor. He explains how your distributor may be able to help you navigate the available options to save your company money and meet your delivery requirements.
American Coin-Op releases a new podcast on a different topic of interest every other month? Give it a listen at AmericanCoinOp.com/podcasts.
(Cover Photo: iStock.com/Alina Kurianova)You hold in your hands our annual Buyer’s Guide, a definitive resource for boosting your laundry business’ purchasing power. Using this newly updated tool, you can easily connect with leading manufacturers and suppliers serving the self-service laundry industry today. This year, we feature listings from more than 120 companies.
Our 2023 Guide opens on page 6 with the Products & Services directory. Once you identify a business that interests you, then turn to our alphabetical Manufacturers & Suppliers directory beginning on page 10. There, you’ll find their mailing address, phone number, website address and email address (if provided).
I recommend you keep this Guide close to your office phone or keyboard. But, if you find yourself needing it someday and don’t have it, our online version is available 24/7 at AmericanCoinOp.com; click “Resources,” then “Buyer’s Guide.”
If you’re in the market and are shopping around for new products for your store, let our Buyer’s Guide be your go-to resource! And when you call on a vendor, kindly let them know that American Coin-Op guided you to them.

Paychex Inc., which provides software solutions for human resources, payroll, benefits, and insurance services, has released a list of the regulatory issues that employers should monitor in 2023.
The company’s annual list outlines the most prominent compliance-related topics employers will need to contend with this year and explores the legislative and regulatory context surrounding these issues.
Funding and tax credit eligibility rose to the top of the 2023 list, as business leaders manage the economic impacts of inflation and turn to programs like the Employee Retention Tax Credit and the Inflation Reduction Act. Businesses should also prepare for potential legislation and regulations that could impact how to classify workers, pay workers, and provide time off for their workers.
“We understand that keeping up with shift-
ing regulations can be a challenge for business owners—and that missteps can have serious consequences,” says Frank Fiorille, vice president of risk, compliance, and data analytics at Paychex. “The past few years have sparked a widespread re-evaluation of the employeeemployer relationship, and that wave of change shows no signs of stopping.”
Paychex’s compliance professionals have identified the following topics as key considerations for employers in 2023:
Despite the absence of any new federal programs to date, businesses can still take advantage of the funding opportunities carrying over from the COVID-19 pandemic, including:
The Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) — Businesses that paid qualified wages to keep employees working from March
12, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2021 (and for some certain businesses identified as Recovery Startups, wages could be paid through Dec. 31, 2021), have until either April 15, 2024 (for three quarters of 2020), or April 15, 2025 (for all four quarters of 2021) to file amended returns and retroactively claim the credit.
Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) —
The Small Business Administration is still accepting applications for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan forgiveness if submitted before the maturity date of the loan.
The Inflation Reduction Act — This doubled the maximum amount of the Research and Development Tax Credit, giving certain businesses in tax year 2023 a chance to claim up to $500,000 annually for qualified research activities.
State Incentives — Some states also continue to sponsor programs that enhance funding efforts to help businesses, including 38 approved State Small Business Credit Initiative programs.
This issue was again on the agendas of state and local legislative bodies in 2022, and more jurisdictions are expected to pass legislation this year. By the close of 2022, seven states and several local jurisdictions had passed legislation requiring employer pay transparency.
Employers will also need to stay on top of federal and state initiatives that may pass in 2023 to address pay inequity through annual reporting similar to the existing California Pay Data reporting and the Illinois Equal Pay reporting intended to mitigate race and gender discrimination in pay.
Late last year, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) released a proposal to revise its guidance on determining who is an employee or an independent contractor under the Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA). While the DOL is expected to release a final rule in 2023, the rule will only be applicable when determining worker status under federal wage and hour law. Employers must continue to be diligent in maintaining awareness of, and compliance with, the other complex tests for determining worker status under the many other federal, state, local, and industry-specific regulations and laws.
Building on the framework of the SECURE Act of 2019, SECURE 2.0 [formally the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, HR 2617] has a handful of key provisions, including an expansion of eligibility for the tax credit when a business establishes a workplace retirement plan, an increase in the RMD age, mandated automatic enrollment for certain retirement plans, even student loan payment matching that aims to counter two crises—student loan debt and retirement savings—at the same time.
Based on listening sessions held in mid-2022,
it’s anticipated that the DOL will release proposed changes to the federal overtime regulations. The changes would reflect the current labor market, including an increase in the salary threshold for exempt workers. Additional regulations at the state and local level are anticipated in areas including fair scheduling ordinances, and the elimination of sub-minimum wage rates and tip credits in certain jurisdictions.
An increase in industry-specific requirements, particularly in the hospitality, retail and healthcare sectors, may be on the horizon following efforts like the California FAST Recovery Act which, although potentially subject to voter approval in 2024, proposes to create a council with the authority to set wage and hour standards for fast food workers.
While a federal paid leave program does not appear to be on the horizon for 2023, several states considered legislation in 2022 to provide employees with paid time off to care for themselves and covered family members.
Maryland and Delaware are the latest states
to pass mandated paid family leave legislation, joining nine other states and the District of Columbia. 2023 will see the start of the first opt-in, voluntary paid family leave insurance program, available to employers or directly to employees, with legislation passed in New Hampshire.
With the growth and continued norm of a hybrid and remote workforce, businesses must adapt privacy policies and cyber security practices in a manner that effectively balances the needs of the business, against both employee and customer expectations with respect to the privacy of personal information.
Businesses must be clear and transparent about the collection, use, storage, and retention of data. In the absence of a federal privacy law, states continue to broaden the scope of their data protection laws.
Beyond these regulatory issues identified by Paychex, other areas of interest for businesses to consider include tax changes, hybrid and remote work, and healthcare reform.
When it comes to acquiring parts required to keep laundry machinery in operation, one of the factors is the shipping expense and time in transit. Whether you are shipping across the state line or to the other side of the globe, your parts distributor may be able to help you navigate the available options to save your company money and meet your delivery requirements.
In general, if a domestic UPS ground shipment will take three to four days in transit to you and cost $25, moving to the least expensive air method, 2nd Day Air, will double the price to $50 and moving to the fastest method offered, Next Day Air, will double the price again to about $100. International shipping can be extremely expensive since almost all shipments are done by air. The shipping options
vary much less than with domestic shipments but other factors such as consolidation can affect the total cost.
While time in transit is an important part of the transportation of goods, it doesn’t make sense to pay a premium for faster transport if the company you are buying from does not have the item you need in stock and will have to wait days or weeks for the item to arrive. Look for a distributor with a large inventory that frequently allows it to ship the same day you place your order. If it does not have the item in stock, there could be multiple suppliers for any particular item that could offer expedited inbound service to help reduce the lead time.
Working with a distributor can help to minimize shipping
costs by allowing parts from multiple manufacturers to be shipped in one shipment directly from their stock. If the items required are not in the distributor’s stock, it can act as a hub bringing in products from multiple suppliers and consolidating them into one shipment destined for a single address anywhere in the world. Having one shipment from one U.S.-based supplier can save thousands of dollars when compared to using multiple suppliers.
Your distributor could also act as the “Small Package Forwarder” with the added benefit of managing the inbound product shipments and relationships with multiple suppliers. It can mix different types of products into one shipment combining OEM parts, generic parts, supply items and parts sourced from the suppliers to the machinery manufacturers, expanding the savings potential. See if your distributor can manage all of the import/export documents, eliminating the delays that are often caused by missing documents during the customs clearance process in the destination country.
Freight forwarding companies provide a variety of supply chain services, offering air and sea freight options at discounted prices. They often have regularly scheduled containers of goods shipped from one of many port cities like Miami to destination countries all over the world. They contract with carriers to get special pricing that can be passed on to customers.
Normally, a small package shipment cannot take advantage of reduced rates for sea freight due to size requirements for such shipments. Freight forwarders consolidate multiple shipments from different customers going to the same destination country and consolidate them to allow them to meet the minimum size requirements of ocean transport.
Freight forwarders typically offer delivery to the destination address of the customer. If your distributor knows how to work with freight forwarding companies, you will be able to take advantage of this service and save thousands of dollars in transport costs yearly. Inquire to see if your distributor has expertise in the regulations of each country it ships to and if it can provide all of the necessary documents, including commercial invoice, shipper’s export declaration, and bill of lading, to assure compliance with the regulations of the destination country.
Small Package Forwarders — There are a number of companies in the U.S. that offer services comparable to forwarders for small packages such as Shipito, Stackry, Reship, OPAS and MyUS.com. These companies have warehouses in many U.S. cities and offer a host of services such as consolidation from multiple U.S.-based suppliers, repackaging, volume discounts, storage, photos and online shipment management. Small package forwarders normally work with smaller shipments and ship by air services so they cannot offer the same sea freight discounts offered by the larger freight forwarders.
There are a variety of freight carrier options in which you may be able to work with your distributor, each with its own advantages depending on your needs and urgency:
USPS — The U.S. Postal Service, along with its partnerships with postal services in virtually every country in the world, can be an effective and efficient method to transport goods. Historically, the USPS has had the reputation of losing shipments or long delays in shipment delivery. To be sure, this still happens more often than we would like, but it has made great strides in improving these areas and can now ▼
be considered as a practical option if minimizing time in transit is not a high priority.
UPS — UPS is a strong U.S. package shipment company, capable of reaching virtually any destination in the country in five days or less, with economical rates, delivery guarantees and excellent package tracking. UPS can also be an effective method to ship overseas with many of the same advantages as listed for domestic shipments. See if your distributor can help you compare the shipping costs from multiple carriers, and help you choose the method that best matches your needs.
DHL — DHL is a well-known worldwide shipper of small packages
and can also be a highly effective shipping method. Like UPS, it offers delivery to virtually any destination in the world. DHL is often less expensive than UPS for destinations outside the U.S. but there are exceptions; your distributor can give you the details to help you meet your specific needs.
Air Freight — For larger international shipments that exceed the size or weight limitations of the previous three carriers, your distributor can provide a quote for transportation costs using the air freight divisions of UPS and DHL.
LTL Truck — For larger or heavier domestic shipments, see if your distributor can provide point-to-point costs from almost any carrier working in the U.S. In addition to the transportation cost, there are often additional charges for liftgate service if the destination doesn’t have a loading dock and the part is too heavy to handle manually.
Start planning today to improve your bottom line this year by managing your inbound transportation costs.

Cents, a business management and in-store operations platform that enables laundromat owners to start, manage and grow their business, has launched its lending arm, Cents Capital, to facilitate low-interest loans for its customers and operators in the laundry industry.
With the introduction of SBA and commercial loans, Cents says it will be able to help owners grow their businesses, whether that is expanding their footprint, retooling their store, buying new card systems, or using working capital to expand operations.
“At Cents, our core focus is to partner with our customers and create products and solutions that enable our operators to scale and succeed,” says Alexander Jekowsky, CEO and co-founder of Cents. “It’s about providing real value and optionality for our operators beyond just technology.
“Through Cents, and by utilizing our complete product line, operators can access capital more easily than relying exclusively on bank deposits and utility bills. Whether it’s $25,000 for a retool or a $1 million-plus development, Cents Capital is there to support our customers at a competitive and affordable rate.”
Cents Capital provides access to financing so laundromat owners can manage cash flows and invest in growth, the company says. As the product develops, operators and distributors will have different ways to manage payments, track capital deployment, and access other bankingas-a-service products.
Cents Capital is available to all owners, operators, and distributors, whether or not they use Cents’ operating system.

Mobile laundry and drycleaning pickup and delivery service 2ULaundry has announced a $20 million Series B funding led by Level 5 Capital Partners (L5), bringing the total raised to $25.4 million. Driven by the capital injection, 2ULaundry plans to continue scaling physical locations across the country.
2ULaundry and its brick-and-mortar counterpart, LaundroLab, are on a mission to innovate the $46 billion laundry and drycleaning industry, says Alex Smereczniak, CEO and co-founder of 2ULaundry.
“Our two brands complement each other in that 2ULaundry pickup and delivery volume gets layered on top of modern, tech-enabled, franchised LaundroLabs,’ he says. “The result is a franchisee with store revenues that far exceed your traditional coin laundry.”
2ULaundry plans to expand with 20 new locations this year through franchising, plus target national partnerships to provide services to businesses such as gyms, fitness studios and Airbnb hosts.
Since the LaundroLab franchise opportunity launched in 2021, there are 29 LaundroLab owners and 108 licenses have been awarded.
“With 108 licenses sold, a goal of building our team with over 350 hires and opening 25 new stores in the next 12 months, we are focused on scaling thoughtfully and our partnership with L5 equips us with the resources to do so as we set out to ‘Make Laundry Happy’ nationwide,” Smereczniak says.
The Southwest Drycleaners Association (SDA) will host the Cleaners Showcase 2023 on April 28-30 at the Irving (Texas) Convention Center, and the event will include a component of special interest to coin laundry owners of the region.
Conference registration and housing are open now. Registration is free for SDA, Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) or Coin Laundry Association (CLA) members; they must contact the SDA for a needed special promo code. Non-members are welcome either pre-registered or at the door for a fee.

LAUNDROMAT SAAS STARTUP TURNS RAISES PRESEED FUNDING
Turns, a vertical SaaS (software as a service) startup for the laundry industry, reports it has raised $500,000 in pre-seed funding led by Better Capital, along with participation from PointOne Capital and others.
Turns says it helps laundromats deliver a modern experience to their users with a full stack software and hardware integrated solutions that includes a modern point-of-sale system (POS), customer management, payments, accounting, employee management and more.
Turns launched its beta and says it has already signed more than 50 laundromats and dry cleaners across eight countries, including the United States, India, United Arab Emirates and others.
It will primarily focus on the U.S. market and is targeting 1,000 customers in the next 12-18 months.
Founders Sukanth Srivastav and Vishal Gupta built a laundry startup in India in 2015. While that venture didn’t work out, their experience prompted them to start working on Turns last year.
“Laundromats and cleaners represent one of the largest Main Street businesses in the United States that was severely underserved by modern software,” says Srivastav, who leads all things business at Turns. “We see an immense vertical SaaS opportunity and already understand the laundry business intimately.”
Gupta, who leads Turns’ product and engineering efforts, calls the laundry business “complex and competitive.” Laundromats need state-ofthe-art software to deliver the customer experience being demanded by B2C and B2B customers, he says, and he believes Turns can provide an all-in-one system for that purpose.
Customers favor the large capacity of LG Commercial Laundry machines because they can finish their laundry in one load. Bigger capacity means more customer rotations for your business.
