Supply / Demand

To say that the drycleaning industry has seen a challenging 2020 and, thus far, 2021 is a massive understatement. And now, even as business is picking back up as society returns to something approaching normal, cleaners and distributors face new complications.

Where supplies were readily available when demand plummeted in 2020, the opposite is proving true now, with many products becoming difficult to find as demand picks back up. The supply chain is strained, and both cleaners and suppliers are trying to stretch what they have to meet their needs.

This issue marks the next installment of our Distributors Directory, giving dry cleaners an index to companies that provide the equipment, parts, supplies, services and other necessities they need to serve their own customers. While this is a regular feature of American Drycleaner, the past few months have been anything but routine.

While working to make supplies meet increasing demand is a “better problem” than facing that demand drying up overnight, as we saw in 2020, it’s still an obstacle to overcome. While this should ease as manufacturing increases and transportation delays and bottlenecks sort themselves out, it’s not going to go away all at once; experts believe that this strain will gradually lessen over the next few months.

One of the keys for cleaners getting what they need is to develop a relationship with their distributors. A regular client will get the best of a limited supply than a “one-off” customer. It’s a business reality — and human nature. So, if you’re not already in a stable distribution relationship, it’s time to forge or strengthen those bonds.

10 YEARS AGO. Clean Show Satisfaction — According to American Drycleaner’s Wire survey, most dry cleaners (71%) reported either being “fully satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” by what they found at Clean Show 2011, held in June of that year. Of the remaining respondents, 17% reported being “neither satisfied nor dissatisfied,” 8.6% being “somewhat dissatisfied,” and only 2.9% being “fully dissatisfied.”

Changes were coming to the show in 2013, when it was shorted by a day and was scheduled to take place over the weekend rather than during the week. “I think it’s great if you do it over a long weekend,” one respondent said. “It is impossible for small business owners to miss a lot of work during the week.”

25 YEARS AGO. Neg-reg Hearings

Negotiated regulations (“negreg”) hearings for New York State dry cleaners began, drawing crowds and demonstrators. The hearings, held in four different cities during the week of July 15, drew dry cleaners from across the state, who were met by opponents from Consumers Union, Greenpeace, the Union of Needletrades, Industrial & Textile Employees (UNITE) and various other environmental organizations. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation announced that it would study all the testimony, but

it was uncertain at the time whether the governor would sign any regulations into law.

50 YEARS AGO. It Can Be Done! —

Worth Hinton, owner of Zebulon Cleaners in Zebulon, North Carolina, reported that, for the first time in the 37-year history of his business, that he did not have a single claim or damaged garment for the entire year of 1970. “That’s quite a record,” reported the North Carolina Assn. of Launderers & Cleaners Bulletin. “Just imagine the degree of experience and know-how he has to exercise in view of the many problem fabrics, dyes and garment construction we face today.”

Diamond T

Delivery Truck — A new delivery truck with a three-quarter-ton capacity was announced by the Diamond T Motor Car Company of Chicago. “Not only is this new truck, known as Model 80, new to Diamond T,” the company reported, “but specifications indicate that it is a type new to the truck industry. This newest Diamond T, while similar in general appearance to the larger Diamond T trucks, represents fresh engineering and designing throughout the chassis, cab and bodies. Wheelbase is 119 inches.”
