As one of the nation’s largest route fleets its necessary for our company to have world class technology in both the delivery truck & in our retail locations. Our management team relies exclusively on Spot’s Delivery Connect Mobile to verify that our drivers are delivering the right orders to the proper doorstep and our commissioned drivers love that they are able to communicate via text (SMS) to our guests real time through the application. I couldn’t be more happy with the suite of Spot’s

being used in

our delivery operation.

Tools for Future Growth

Between the pandemic, supply chain issues, labor shortages, changing customer behavior and more, it’s beginning to look like the “return to normal” many business owners were hoping for has turned into “lean into the curves.”

While, overall, business has returned or nearly returned to 2019 levels for some, the nature of that business has evolved. Customer’s needs, desires and demands have changed, and dry cleaners who have adapted to these changes are seeing increased profits and improved customer satisfaction.

That’s why this year’s Distributors Directory can have added meaning for owners looking to expand their businesses and offer new services. A changing business model often requires new equipment, along with new expertise in putting those tools to their best use.

In this pages of this month’s American Drycleaner, you’ll find companies all over the United States, as well as Canada, that are ready to help you put your plans into motion. And, if you’re not quite ready to pull the trigger, keep this issue handy — or go to our online version on americandrycleaner.com — and find the resources you’ll need when the time comes.

While the Distributors Directory takes up the bulk of this issue, we do have a couple of other features for you this month.

The largest textile care event in North America, The Clean Show, took place in Atlanta from July 30 through Aug. 2, and we’re offering our initial impressions. We’ll also have much more about the show in next month’s issue.

Rounding out the offerings for this issue, we have “Making and Measuring Your Marketing.” In a webinar hosted by the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), David Coyle, industry marketing coach of Maverick Drycleaners, offered several ways to ensure that your marketing isn’t an expense but an investment — one that will pay off if you know what to look for when it comes to results.

There are exciting times ahead in our industry— let’s make the most of them!

Ideas and Energy Flow at Clean Show 2022

After a year’s delay, The Clean Show finally brought dry cleaners and other members of the professional textile care industry back together. The biggest such show in North America, this year’s event took place from July 30 through August 2 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Messe Frankfurt, the organizer of this year’s show, reported that the 216,400 sq. ft. exhibit hall brought together 347 exhibitors to showcase the latest technology, equipment and other products for the commercial dry-

cleaning, laundering and textile care services industry.

There were 51 first-time exhibitors, as well — a record for any edition of the Clean Show, Messe Frankfurt states, with nearly 10,000 attendees visiting the event.

“These industries have been through a lot these last two years,” said Greg Jira, show director for The Clean Show, “and Clean’s goal is to serve as a global platform for knowledge and idea sharing so that companies may walk away with the tools they need to recover and ultimately, thrive. With the feedback we are receiving from this year’s event, it is clear that we were able to accomplish that and so much more.”

For many dry cleaners, their days were split between

The energy was running high at the 2022 Clean Show, held July 30 through August 2 at the Georgia World Convention Center in At lanta. After being delayed from 2021 because of the pandemic, both attendees and exhibitors seemed ready to do business. (Photo: The Clean Show)
Delayed for a year, exhibitors and attendees worked to make up lost time

attending educational sessions sponsored by the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), CINET and other organizations, and then hitting the show floor to see new technology in action, learn about tools available to them and connect with both old and new friends.

Marc Poling, the owner of the Tampa, Florida-based Mango Cleaners & Laundry, found no lack of ideas at the show to try when he returned home. “It’s been fabulous,” he says, “One of the key things, I think, is that you can’t implement everything at the same time. You start with one thing and do it one step at a time.”

Poling came to the show to learn about adding wet cleaning services to his company. “If we do that, I’m looking to purchase tensioning equipment and presses,” he says. “But one of the things I’ve found at the Clean Shows, and I’ve been to many, is that I always come back with something that’s new — a product or a way to do business better.”

Some exhibitors found that the cleaners who stopped by their booth shared Polling’s stance of wanting to get started on the next chapter of their business. Whether it was because of the delay in this year’s show because of the pandemic, changing economic trends, evolving customer behaviors, or a combination of all this and more, this year’s Clean Show held added emphasis for them.

“I think I’ve seen more of a buyer focus than I have at some previous Clean Shows,” says Tim Maxwell, presi dent of GreenEarth Cleaning, an exhibitor at the event. “Before, there would be a lot of tire kickers, just kind of exploring what was going on. With this show, in our ex perience and with some of the vendors I’ve spoken with, there have been a lot of triggers pulled here. The cleaners are talking to vendors about specific things they want and when they want them. They are in a buying mentality.”

Maxwell believes he knows why cleaners attending the show were demonstrating this shift in attitude: “They’ve weathered the storm, and now they want to take it to the next level and get what they need to do so.”

“Years ago, I heard speakers say that if you’re simply in the drycleaning business, you’re going out of business,” Poling says. “That prompted me to really concentrate on wash-dry-fold early on, and that thinking has really helped.” Ideas like this are why Poling comes to events like the Clean Show. “I can’t believe that every cleaner doesn’t come, but I’m happy a lot of my competitors don’t.”

The next edition of The Clean Show will take place in Orlando, Florida, and is slated for mid-August 2025.

American Drycleaner will have much more coverage of the Clean Show, including coverage of educational ses sions and new products, in our October issue.

Making and Measuring Your Marketing

While most business owners understand that marketing is a necessary part of competing for new clients’ attention and keeping existing ones, it’s not something everyone enjoys. Cleaners who ignore this critical area of their business, however, or don’t understand how their marketing is performing, can find themselves falling behind the competition.

This was the theme of “Measure Your Marketing,” a webinar recently hosted by the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI). David Coyle, industry marketing coach

of

Maverick

Drycleaners

and owner of In The Bag

Cleaners in Wichita, Kansas, presented some of the most important things he believes cleaners should keep in mind — and why they might be hesitant at first to do so.

“Frankly, a lot of business owners and entrepreneurs, myself included, don’t like to be held accountable,” he says. “When we talk about something like measuring your marketing, a lot of that marketing is directed by us. And sometimes we prefer to have the blindfold on and hope that what we’re doing is OK.”

Proper marketing is an investment, not an expense

Coyle believes that having structure can actually be a liberating experience: “If there’s no feedback, no measuring, we’re not really going to explore. There’s so much that can be done in marketing if we look at what’s working and what’s not.”

WHICH 50%?

Coyle started by recounting an old marketing joke that holds a lot of truth — and pain — for many: “A man comes in and says ‘50% of my marketing is working, and 50% is not, but I don’t have any idea which 50% is which.’”

This leads, Coyle says, to simply guessing at what works. “It’s like throwing a dart at a dartboard, but with a blindfold on,” he says. “Sometimes we’re lucky, and we hit the board. Sometimes we’re really lucky and get a good number. But it’s not the same as pulling off the blindfold, setting up and aiming for that bullseye.”

And going to an ad agency is no sure bet to increase profitability, Coyle says.

“What happens is that mystery continues, because most ad agencies don’t want to be held accountable for the lack of results they provide. They’ll talk to you in vague terms about impressions, views and clickthroughs. A lot of these things can give a slight indication of the attention that your marketing’s getting, but it will never tell you anything about how the cash drawer is impacted. For us to properly measure, we need to connect the marketing tactic to what happens with the cash drawer. What sales can we attribute to that marketing activity?”

These owners end up viewing marketing as a cost, he says. “And, like most items on our profit-and-loss statement, we try to lower costs.”

Coyle says that many dry cleaners believe that marketing is almost like putting money into a slot machine and

hoping for a payout. When the results start to be monitored and measured, however, that dynamic changes.

“It starts feeling more like a vend ing machine than a slot machine when you do it right,” he says, “and you start to see marketing is more of an investment, rather than a cost. You put $1 into the sales vending machine in the form of marketing, and you get $8 in sales out. As long as you keep

getting that return, you’ll look around all day for all the $1 bills you can find. When you tune it in, measure it and know it’s working, you know that it will continue to work.”

The effects of a properly tuned marketing machine also go beyond the day-to-day profits, Coyle believes.

“The most successful people have the largest time perspective,” he says. “While most of your competitors

www.americandrycleaner.com

are just trying to get stuff done that’s due today, you can begin working on the new clients you’re trying to attract next week and the clients that you’re trying to retain. While they’re treading water, getting tired while trying to get today’s stuff done, you’re planning ahead, weeks, months, in some cases, quarters and years in advance. The person who is going to come out ahead is the one who feels they control the levers in advance of when they need the desired results.”

DIRECT RESPONSE MARKETING

Coyle says there are different marketing approaches that smaller companies such as drycleaning businesses should take. While branding can feed the ego, it’s difficult to track and can be expensive.

“Big companies like Pepsi or Anheuser Busch can do branding, image-based marketing because they have enormous marketing budgets that allow them to sway public opinion and generate demand,” he says.

“One of the best strategies for dry cleaners is to see what the customers already demand. Ask them what they’re looking for — what alleviates pain and what helps them attract pleasure in their lives.” This strategy, Coyle says, is called direct response marketing.

“I was introduced to this about 10 years ago, and it changed my world. It changed everything about what I was doing in our business,” he says. “It allowed me to truly, from an empathetic perspective, think of what the client wants and deliver it to them — and not talk in these vague generalizations that ‘We do an awesome job.’”

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF EFFECTIVE MARKETING

While marketing can be a creative effort, high-performing ads have a lot in common, Coyle believes.

Ads Must Have an Offer — “An offer is, basically, what does the client get if they do what you tell them to do?” Coyle says. “Every communication must ask for the recipient to take some sort of action, and for new clients, that offer should be irresistible. So, while we do comforter cleanings for $19, and we give someone a quarterly reminder to do that, I’m not so sure that it’s absolutely irresistible. In some markets it is, and it’s pretty irresist-

ible in our market. But we found that $15 comforters are absolutely irresistible. And it turns out is one of the best ways to attract our target right-fit client.”

Ads Need to Grab Attention — Coyle believes that one of the worst sins in marketing is to be boring.

“People, generally speaking, live routine and boring lives. Part of your job in marketing is not to offend, but to actually wake people up a little bit and let them realize that if they make some adjustments to their routine, then they could actually be a lot happier.”

To illustrate this, Coyle uses wash-dry-fold as an example: “For someone who doesn’t use this service, we want to wake them up and ask them, ‘Could you imagine your life if you never did laundry again?’ or ‘Do you value your time at greater than $7 an hour?’ We want to wake someone up and make them realize that a change to their routine could make them happier. We can’t do that if we don’t grab their attention.”

Ads Should Address Pain and Provide Solutions — Effective marketing not only makes the audience realize how their lives could be better, but how your company can make that change a reality.

“For a lot of us, that pain point is time,” Coyle says. “If you’ve got four teenagers, for instance, the amount of laundry that’s generated by that household is crazy. So, we want to address a specific single pain that the recipient has now, and then we also want to present a solution that will resolve the recipient’s pain.”

Coyle cautions that the ads shouldn’t paint pictures that will ultimately disappoint.

“It’s important that this marketing does not over-promise and under-deliver,” he says. “It needs to be understandable and believable. We don’t want to say, ‘Become a millionaire by never doing laundry again.’ But could someone use those 10 to 12 hours doing laundry and ironing to do things in their lives that are more motivating and meaningful? Absolutely.”

Ads Need to Have a Deadline — Marketing should provide a sense of urgency, Coyle believes, or risk being swept aside by the other demands of the day.

there’s no reason to act now, people won’t act now,”

“One of the best strategies for dry cleaners is to see what the customers already demand. Ask them what they’re looking for — what alleviates pain and what helps them attract pleasure in their lives.” This strategy, Coyle says, is called direct response marketing.

he says. “So, it’s extremely important to create some scarcity by saying this offer is available in a certain time frame. That timeframe depends on the offer a little bit. But in my experi ence, that should be anywhere from two to four weeks to let them claim the offer.”

While the ad should give enough time for customers to respond to the ad, the danger lies in providing too much time.

“If you do something that expires four months from now, there’s no urgency. They’ll think, ‘Let me put it in this pile, and I’ll get to it later. So, the more urgent, the better.”

Ads Should Clearly Give Instructions — Unclear ads are no one’s friends, Coyle says: “Your marketing should make it very clear what to do next, to either claim that offer you’re presenting or to take the next step.”

Thinking about marketing from different perspectives can help in finding success with this step.

“A 12- or 13-year-old should have no question after reading your ad, your text, your email, your handwritten note, your Facebook or Google ad, or whatever they are looking at,” Coyle says.

Keeping in mind that your marketing message isn’t the only one they’re going to see that day, or even that minute, is crucial.

“People get confused,” he says, “especially with information overload. You need to tell them what to do next. This is the beginning of you setting the stage of being that trusted adviser and expert. Tell them what to do next, and most people will follow the direction that you give them if they’re interested in that pain point being solved.”

Ad Success Must be Trackable — Knowing what is working and what isn’t allows cleaners to use their mar keting budget to its fullest, Coyle says.

“There must be a mechanism, like a redemption code, that allows for

tracking and measurement,” he says. So, how should cleaners use a redemption code? “There are many kinds of ways,” Coyle says, “and as the point-of-sale systems become more focused on this, there are going to be additional ones.”

Identifying which piece of marketing brought someone into your store is key.

“Some people put a coupon

code — it might be a number, or it might be some letters and numbers. It might be a barcode,” Coyle says. “There are a lot of services where your point of sale can provide a barcode that, when it’s scanned, can automatically be applied to their account so they don’t even need to present the coupon when they come in. It can happen that easily.

“But there has to be something

that basically clicks and says, ‘We applied this coupon, they took this offer, and we can connect it to this order.’ Otherwise, you will not be able to measure it.”

TRAFFIC SOURCES

From a marketing perspective, you have three different traffic sources. The first one is direct traffic sources.

“These might be things like a Google ad, or a handwritten note to someone or if you send a postcard out for new clients coming into the business,” Coyle says. “This is what I consider standard marketing.”

Coyle says the next source is indirect traffic, which comes from affiliate relationships or joint ventures.

“An affiliate relationship is if you go to the clothing store, and say, ‘Look, every time you sell a dryclean-only piece of clothing, give someone this certificate,’ and if they show the receipt and the certificate, they will get that item cleaned for free the first time they bring it into you.”

Coyle has found examples of dry cleaners going outside of the clothing industry to make this work as well.

“I’ve got a friend who, every time a Louis Vuitton purse is sold at a high-end mall out on the West Coast, actually gives a $200 gift card that’s put into that purse for his cleaners,” he says. “They’ve created an affiliate relationship, because he knows that’s the ideal target client for his business.”

Coyle’s third traffic source is through referrals. He says there are five steps of the client journey at your company to focus on to create a thriving referral process:

• Attract — The first step is to get the customer’s attention. “Even though we’re familiar with our business, not everyone is,” Coyle says. “You’ve heard that person say, ‘I’ve driven by your place a million times, and I never noticed you are there.’ Well, we’ve been there for 10 years. People have blinders on. They’re busy. So, we need to attract them. We want to let them know that we exist.”

• Acquire — In this step, the new client breaks the seal and uses the cleaner’s services. “This means we want them to become a paying client,” Coyle says. “We want them to spend their first dollar with us and feel appreciated.”

• Appreciate — Coyle believes in giving new clients welcome gifts, such as personalized VIP bags. “It’s one of the main things that we do to show people appreciation,” he says, “and make sure that they know that they feel important, they feel appreciated, and they feel included in what we’re doing.”

• Ascend — In this step, the customer is starting to appreciate what a drycleaning business can add to his or her life. “We want them to use all the services we have to offer,” Coyle says.

• Ambassadors — In this ultimate step, the customer is not only using all the cleaner’s services but is telling their friends. “We want them to be ambassadors of the business and become raving fans,” Coyle says.

When these five steps are taken, he says, a cleaner has a better opportunity to retain that client over the long term. To accomplish this, cleaners need to have the proper mindset.

“Most people want to make a profit on the front end of this process — the Attract and Acquire steps,” Coyle says. “I’m going to encourage you to not think of it that way. I want you to think of the front end as being a breakeven situation where what you spend to attract and acquire clients is canceled out by the sales that come from those efforts. Instead, all of your profit is actually made on the next three steps, or at the back end of the process.”

The key, Coyle says, is making sure the middle step — Appreciation — becomes robust in your process. Making people feel good about their purchase, rather than have regrets, ushers them through the journey to the back end.

“They think, ‘I just spent money, but you know what, I feel so good about it,’” Coyle says, “‘because they appreciate me. They gave me a welcome gift. They use

name. They had plenty of time to spend with me and answer all my questions. I went home with a great deal off of the second order that I’m going to bring in.’ So, if your appreciation is robust, you will then stick that sale, and you’ll be able to take them from the front end over to the back end, which is where all the profits are made.”

DATA POINTS TO CONSIDER

When measuring the effectiveness of your marketing,

The key, Coyle says, is making sure the middle step — Appreciation — becomes robust in your process. Making people feel good about their purchase, rather than have regrets, ushers them through the journey to the back end.

there are some key measurements to keep in mind:

• Return on Investment (ROI) — “Again, when you do marketing, think about it as an investment, not as an expense that you’re try ing to cut,” Coyle says. To figure ROI, the formula is to take the gain from the investment, sub tract the cost of the investment, and then divide that number again by the cost of the investment multiplied by 100 to get the ROI percentage. This number gives a solid, measurable data point by which you can gain a baseline and see how ads and marketing efforts are performing.

• Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)

“These are the total costs to attract and acquire new clients,” Coyle says, “which are the first two steps in the customer’s jour ney. What you spend on attract ing and acquiring goes into this for a period of time, divided by the number of new clients you’ve got. This gives you your cost per acquisition — what it costs you to acquire a new client.”

•Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) — “This gives the total worth to your business of a customer over the whole period of their relationship with you,” Coyle says. “To calculate this, take the average number of visits per year multiplied by the average monetary value of each transaction multiplied by their years as a client.”

Doing this, Coyle believes, al lows a cleaner to focus on the client relationships, as opposed to client transactions. “What’s interesting is that, when you start focusing on the relationship and the things that make the lifetime value increase, your clients will actually start seeing you as a relationship rather than a trans action. A client will typically

PUTTING THE MARKETING DATA TO WORK

With this data in hand, a cleaner can focus on the services and marketing that resonate with their most valuable customers — usually, that works out to the 20% of customers that provide 80% of the profit.

This is only possible, however, if

the cleaner keeps track of the data surrounding their marketing efforts and their customers’ behavior. And that can involve changing the mindset around marketing.

“Treat your marketing like an investment,” Coyle says. “If you can’t measure it, get rid of it. That will be OK, because you’ll have more money to put toward things that are measurable.”

reciprocate how you treat them.”

Trevil America Releases Updated Tensioning Form Finisher

MAMARONECK, N.Y. — Trevil America has introduced an upgraded version of its multi garment tensioning form finisher, the Princess Ultra (model 5039).

The company states that the machine is capable of handling small blouses to 5XL shirts and everything in between. In addition, difficult items like lab coats and chef jackets can be finished on the Princess Ultra.

The new model includes an intuitive touch screen control panel, the company stated in its announcement, that makes it easy for the operator to choose the correct program and tensioning settings. New side expander controls allow for hard tensioning for jackets and soft tensioning for shirts and blouses, providing better quality with fewer adjustments.

The company says the updated finisher offers patented dual, rotating front clamp system allows for pressing of wet and dry garments. When finishing a wet garment, an electrically heated front clamp presses the front placket at 80 PSI. A simple rotation of the clamp device switches to the unheated clamp which pushes forward at 30 PSI to avoid marks and impressions.

Xplor Technologies Launches New Integrated Web App

ATLANTA — Xplor Technologies, a global platform integrating software, payments, and commerce accelerating technologies, recently launched a new web app that the company says reimagines day-to-day drycleaning business management.

The company says that the new app, Xplor Spot Connect, is designed to improve operations and drive efficiency, resulting in higher profitability for dry cleaning business owners.

Major features of the new app, the company states, include faster employee onboarding, simple photo capture and note taking, and increased flexibility for consumers — such as dropping items off in a retail location and collecting at a locker later. The company also notes the app offers a consistent easyto-use interface that creates a seamless experience for all employees, allowing customers to launch the

web app from any browser on any device, whether desktop, laptop, mobile device or tablet, and use a touchscreen monitor or tablet for quicker processing.

In addition to increased efficiency and customer satisfaction, the company claims that profitability will also be improved for customers. This launch comes at a crucial time for the drycleaning industry, Xplor states, with the market currently experiencing changing demand due to shifts towards casual attire, hybrid working and overall consolidation.

Relationships, Peacocks and Offices on Wheels

10 YEARS AGO. Happy Relationships — When asked how satisfied they were with their distributors, approximately 78% of cleaners polled in the American Drycleaner Wire survey said they were happy with the relationship, with 44% saying they were “very satisfied” and 33.3% saying they were “somewhat satisfied.”

Roughly 11% of respondents said they were “neither satisfied nor dissatisfied,” while equal shares at 5.6% were either “somewhat dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied.” When asked what aspect the service they’d like to see improved, respondents mentioned “pricing,” “order accuracy,” “response time,” “buying from U.S. companies” and “industry knowledge.”

25 YEARS AGO. Barton Bill Support Growing — Based on reports during the congressional summer recess, support for the Small Business Remediation Act — also known as the Barton Bill in honor of its author, Rep. Joe Barton (RTX) — was growing in states from coast to coast. And, with Congress reconvening in September, the number of sponsors was expected to approach or surpass the 40-sponsor mark, putting it nearly halfway to 100 sponsored target industry leaders set during Clean Show ’97. The legislation was designed to protect drycleaners when it came to environmental cleanup. “So far, nobody has said the bill is a bad idea,” said campaign coordinator Barney Deden. “With all the people

contacted, when they understand the bill, there for it. They recognize that it’s not a partisan bill and not is not anti-environmental.”

50 YEARS AGO. End of the Peacock Era — Fashion authorities were predicting that, in the fall of 1972, men would set a neat, well-dressed fashion pace in classically designed American woolens. The moretraditional look would signal the end of the “peacock era,” they believed, turning more conservative, and away from the “color riot” and “costume party.” They predicted that there would be suits with slightly narrower lapels, shaped waists and trousers with small, front-pocket flaps, either over pleats or combined with cuffs.

85 YEARS AGO. Branch Office on Wheels

The Star Equipment Corporation of Bloomfield, New Jersey, put what it called a “branch office on wheels” on the road in the form of a demonstrating truck. The truck carried a completely installed “Sec” Cleaning System, but also had electrical generating equipment driven off the truck’s engine. A spotting board was also carried on board so that a complete demonstration up to the pressing operation could be given. The company planned to route the truck through as much of the country as possible.
