It’s Still a New Year
While it’s not quite a brand new year now — we’re more than 1/12th of the way through 2023 — it’s still a good time to examine your business and see if there are changes you can make to better serve your customers, or if there are new services to try out that might increase your bottom line.
Many of the resolutions made on January 1 might have fallen by the wayside when calendar flips to February. The year is still young, though, and perhaps some of those resolutions just need some fine tuning now that the year has started. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) offered a webinar last month, “7 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Business,” and the tips given there can be applied this month just as easily as last month. We have a write-up of that webinar available in the “Features” section of our website, www.americandrycleaner.com.
The bulk of this issue is reserved for our annual Buyer’s Guide. Updated for 2023, this is the issue where you can find the companies that will help your company take on the new year. The supply chain has offered no end of problems to business owners in the past couple of years, and material- and equipment-heavy businesses such as those in the drycleaning industry have particularly felt the brunt. Once finding the part or supply you need, getting it to your front door has been another pain point, especially if it’s necessary to get a piece of valuable equipment back up and running — like the old saying goes, “For want of a nail, the kingdom was lost.” Barry offers some tips on getting that nail to you at the best speed and value.

Leveraging Shipping Cost Efficiencies

When it comes to acquiring parts required to keep machinery in operation, one of the factors is the shipping expense and time in transit. Whether you are shipping from across state lines or the other side of the globe, your parts distributor may be able to help you navigate the available options to save your company money and meet your delivery requirements.
SPEED VS. COST
In general, if a domestic UPS ground shipment will take three to four days in transit to you and cost $25, moving to the least expensive air method, 2nd Day Air, will double the price to $50 and moving to the fastest method offered, Next Day Air, will double the price again to about $100.
International shipping can be extremely expensive since almost all shipments are done by air. The shipping options vary much less than with domestic shipments, but other factors can affect the total cost, such as consolidation.
LEAD TIME
While time in transit is an important part of the transportation of goods, it doesn’t make sense to pay a premium for faster transport if the company you are buying from does not have the item you need in stock and will have to wait days or weeks for the item to arrive. Look for a distributor that has a large inventory, allowing it to frequently ship the same day you place your order. If it does not have the item in stock, there could be multiple suppliers for any particular item that could offer expedited inbound service to help reduce the lead time.
CONSOLIDATION
Working with a distributor can help to minimize shipping costs by allowing parts from multiple manufacturers to be shipped in one shipment directly from their stock. If the items required are not in the distributor’s stock, it can
act as a hub, bringing in products from multiple suppliers and consolidating them into one shipment destined for a single address anywhere in the world.
Your distributor could also act as the “Small Package Forwarder,” with the added benefit of managing the inbound product shipments and relationships with multiple suppliers. It can mix different types of products into one shipment, combining OEM parts, generic parts, supply items and parts sourced from the suppliers to the machinery manufacturers, expanding the savings potential. See if your distributor can manage all the import/export documents, eliminating the delays that are often caused by missing documents during the customs clearance process in the destination country.
INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT FORWARDING
Freight forwarding companies provide a variety of supply chain services, offering air and sea freight options at discounted prices. They often have regularly scheduled containers of goods shipped from one of many port cities, like Miami, to destination countries all over the world. They contract with carriers to get special pricing that can be passed on to customers.
Normally, a small package shipment cannot take advantage of reduced rates for sea freight due to size requirements for such shipments. Freight forwarders consolidate multiple shipments from different customers going to the same destination country, thus allowing them to meet the minimum size requirements of ocean transport.
Freight forwarders typically offer delivery to the destination address of the customer. If your distributor knows how to work with freight forwarding companies, you will be able to take advantage of this service and save thousands of dollars in transport costs yearly. Inquire to see if your distributor has expertise in the regulations of each country they ship to and if they can provide all the neces-

sary documents, including commercial invoice, shipper’s export declaration and bill of lading to assure compliance with the regulations of the destination country.
SMALL PACKAGE FORWARDERS
There are many companies in the U.S. that offer services comparable to forwarders for small packages, such as Shipito, Stackry, Reship, OPAS and MyUS.com. These companies have warehouses in many U.S. cities and offer services such as consolidation from multiple U.S.-based suppliers, repackaging, volume discounts, storage, photos and online shipment management.
MULTIPLE CARRIERS
There are a variety of freight carrier options in which you may be able to work with your distributor, each with its own advantages, depending on your needs and urgency.
USPS — The U.S. Postal Service, along with its partnerships with postal services in virtually every country in the world, can be an effective and efficient method of transporting goods. Historically, the USPS has had the reputation of losing shipments or long delays in shipment delivery, but it has made great strides in improving these areas and can now be considered as a practical option if minimizing time in transit is not a high priority.
UPS — UPS is a strong U.S. package shipment company, capable of reaching virtually any destination in the country in five days or less, with economical rates, delivery guarantees and excellent package tracking. UPS can also be an effective method to ship overseas, with many of the same advantages as listed for domestic shipments.
DHL — DHL is a well-known worldwide shipper of small packages and can also be a highly effective shipping method. DHL is often less expensive than UPS for destinations outside the U.S. but there are exceptions; your distributor can give you the details to help you meet your specific needs.
LTL Truck — For larger or heavier domestic shipments, see if your distributor can provide point-to-point costs from almost any carrier working in the U.S. In addition to the transportation cost, there are often additional charges for liftgate service if the destination doesn’t have a loading dock and the part is too heavy to handle manually. Start planning today to improve your bottom line this year by managing your inbound transportation costs.

‘Coats for Vets’ Drive Turns Out Record Numbers
More than 7,800 coats were collected during Illinois event
NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Lake County, Illinois, communities responded in record numbers to the annual “Coats for Vets” drive, sponsored by Zengeler Cleaners and Libertyville Sunrise Rotary.
The 2022 collection drive netted 7,861 coats and jackets, as well as hundreds of winter necessities, such as gloves, scarves and other seasonal clothing in support of local veterans.
“It’s been well documented that vets returning from active duty face a myriad of serious challenges as they readjust to civilian life, perhaps none more challenging than finding a productive job that matches their skills,” says Tom Zengeler, president of Zengeler Cleaners. “Too often, jobs held before leaving to serve are no longer available, making it very difficult to find meaningful work.”
Libertyville Rotary Sunrise, Zengeler Cleaners, its customers and other concerned citizens contribute to “Coats for Vets” as a way to thank veterans for their sacrifices. It’s clear that opportunity resonates throughout the local community, organizers say, as the response for the 2022 drive went well beyond all their expectations.
With so many veterans surviving conflicts from World War II through the present time, there are tens of thousands needing assistance for basics such as food, shelter and clothing, particularly seasonal items, such as winter coats, jackets and gloves.
Zengeler Cleaners’ two Libertyville stores served as drop-off locations for the donations. After the items were collected, the Zengeler staff inspected, repaired as needed, and cleaned each donated item. Zengeler Cleaners then delivered the clothing for distribution by the North Chicago VA Hospital.
“Our staff was blown away by the results of this year’s collection drive,” says Zengeler. “The volume really drove home the message about just how much our customers and neighbors care about the country’s veterans.”
U.S. Chamber of Commerce Launches New Data Center
New service analyzes 12 business economic indicators
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently launched the State of American Data Center. The announcement states that the service, opened the day before the organization’s 2023 State of American Business event, is intended to capture “the economic challenges facing the businesses community and reinforce the need for government to pursue solutions over gridlock.”
The Chamber’s new data center analyzes 12 economic indicators across business topics including workers, IPOs, consumers, supply chains, energy, and innovation to diagnose the health of the business community and economy.
According to the organization, at the start of 2023, the data paints a mixed picture:
• Worker shortage near all-time record: The Chamber’s Worker Shortage Index reading is near an all-time low at 0.73, meaning for every 100 job openings there are only 73 available workers.
• Consumer spending is strong: Even though inflation is near 40-year highs, spending has also been high, up 8.2% annually in 2022.
• Supply chain strains are easing: The New York Federal Reserve’s Global Supply Chain Pressure Index is at 1.0, down from a pandemic high over more than 4.0 in 2021.
• Energy prices are coming down: Energy prices have been at record highs during the Russian invasion of Ukraine but are now beginning to stabilize.
• IPO market and loan markets sagging: The number of IPOs coming to market has dropped below average, with 180 new IPOs in 2022.
• An uneven innovation ecosystem: The U.S. continues to churn out patents in strong numbers, but less than half go to U.S. residents.

New Year, New You — According to the American Drycleaner Wire survey, more than half (58%) of dry cleaners said they made resolutions regarding changes to their business and personal lives. Of the remaining respondents, 32% hadn’t made any New Year’s resolutions, and 10.5% planned to, but hadn’t yet. When asked to name their No. 1 business goals for 2013, 31.6% responded that raising prices and/or cutting costs was at the top of the list, with 26% looking to attract new customers, 21.1% ready to explore extra services, and 15.8% wanting to update or add equipment.
25 YEARS AGO. Barton Bill Picks up Steam
— During the congressional recess, many cleaners worked to line up additional co-sponsors for the Small Business Remediation Act (H.R. 1711), also known as the Barton Bill in honor of its author, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX). Eight more co-sponsors, for a total of 67 congressmen from 26 states, were added. In addition, several sizable donations were made to the Dry Cleaners Action Fund of American (DCAFA), including $35,000 raised by the Michigan Institute of Laundering & Drycleaning, and $10,000 each from the Southwest Drycleaners Association and the
Mid-Atlantic Atlantic Cleaners and Launderers Association.
50 YEARS AGO. Clear Skies Ahead
Economic analysts, both governmental and private, were forecasting a definite upswing in business in 1973. The consensus of private forecasters, according to The Wall Street Journal, was a $110 billion gain in the gross national product. Economists said that the gain would be “fueled by hefty increases in capital spending, inventory building and consumer spending.” Analysts saw “scarcely a cloud on the horizon.”
85 YEARS AGO. Taking to the Airwaves — The New Method Cleaners & Dryers Association of Denver sponsored a radio program called “30 Minutes in Hollywood” which featured George Jessel and Norma Talmadge. The Association was the sole sponsor in Denver, but other cities on the Mutual hookup had an entirely different sponsor. This arrangement allowed local advertisers to present a big-name program at a pro-rated talent cost based on station coverage and city population.
