Forging Bonds for the Future

In the article “Adding Value to Your Supply Chain” published in last month’s American Drycleaner, we looked at how healthy relationships between manufacturers, suppliers and dry cleaners not only provide all concerned with more pleasant experiences, but can make a huge difference when unexpected events — or disasters — take place.

(In case you missed it, last month’s issue, as well as the entire archive of digital editions of our magazine going back to 2013, can be found at americandrycleaner.com/digital-editions.)

So, if you need to build or strengthen relationships with supply professionals in the industry, the information packed into the 2023 Distributors Directory of this month’s issue should provide you with valuable tools to forge those bonds.

While things are much brighter in the drycleaning industry for most going into 2024 than they were just a year ago — we won’t even talk about the two years before that — this is not the time to rest on building relationships. Take a moment to consider those suppliers who keep materials flowing into your business. Is the relationship as strong as it could be? Or are there signs that it might be time to reassess?

Elsewhere in this issue, we profile Kathy Benzinger, the new president of the Drycleaners & Laundry Institute. With challenges within the industry and pending legislation on the state and federal level, the importance of trade associations like DLI, as well as the National Drycleaners Association and regional organizations, has never been more important. We speak with Kathy and learn about her goals for 2024.

We also have an article from guest writer Jessica Ayre on “5 Ways to Get Online Reviews for Your Drycleaning Business.” Boosting your brand is an excellent method to not only get top-of-mind status with your customers but to stand out from the competition, as well. Getting this online word of mouth from satisfied clients can help you do just that.

As we enter 2023’s final quarter, take a look at your business and see what could be improved in 2024. American Drycleaner is here tohelp!

“I tried most of the other brands and none can match the simplicity and reliability of the Realstar Dry Cleaning Machines. After running our rst Realstar for 15 years with very little trouble we purchased another one to add to the capacity. ere was never a question on which one we would purchase. e reliability, the simplicity, and mostly the support when there was an issue were all the reasons we needed to stick with Realstar. It’s incredible when you call support and provide your model number and problem, you feel like the tech on the phone is standing in front of the machine with you, immediately you know you are in good hands. I’ve been doing this for 40 years now and have encountered a lot of vendors but none that I would write a testimonial on, until now. Keep up the great work you guys.”

Jared Abram, owner of Abram Laundry Services, Antonia Mazatzi, Production Leader and 17 year employee of Judi’s Cleaners, and Ben Combs, owner of Judi’s Cleaners.

Incoming DLI President Kathy Benzinger

New leader explores DLI’s role in industry advocacy, education

In August, Kathy Benzinger began her term as the president of the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI). Benzinger is the owner of Benzinger’s Clothing Care, headquartered in Hamburg, New York.

American Drycleaner sat down with Benzinger to discuss her connections with DLI, what she sees as challenges to the industry and cleaners in 2024, and what she wants to accomplish during her one-year term.

ADC: What has your relationship been with DLI over your career?

KB: It was the first Clean Show — in Atlanta in 2015 — that I had attended, and I didn’t know what to expect. At that time, I had been in the drycleaning industry for about 20 years and owned my own business for seven years. During that show, I had the great fortune of meeting two of the nicest people, (NEFA Director) Peter Blake and John Dallas, who was a DLI board member. Every board member has a DCM (district committee member), who is kind of an understudy for that district, and I became John’s understudy.

John became ill, so I stepped into his role. Then, at the encouragement of some of the board members, I ran for his seat once his term had expired. So, I was a DCM from 2015 to 2017, a board member from 2018 to 2021, treasurer from 2021 to 2022 and vice president from 2022

to 2023, and I’ll be stepping into the presidency this year.

John Dallas was a friend and a mentor, and someone that I have grown to love dearly over the years. I give him all the credit for this wonderful opportunity.

ADC: Why did you want to take on a leadership role in DLI?

KB: I took on a leadership role as an opportunity to align myself with an organization that shares my passion for the industry, as well as my passion for learning and growing. I felt that DLI and I align in those two areas, and I knew that if I continued to learn and grow, I would be able to teach and mentor others in the industry, the way that John Dallas and other board members had mentored me. I wanted to learn from the best, and I realized that DLI was the best place to learn.

I also knew that we could be better and offer more opportunities to our membership. I had been a member of DLI for many years, so I saw the value in my membership, and I want others to see it too. I want to spread the word, explore new options and then be able to give back.

ADC: It sounds like mentorship is very important to you.

KB: I have had the most amazing mentors in my life, and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. And I can’t have a conversation about mentors without mentioning (DLI CEO) Mary Scalco. She is an inspiration to me, both as a professional and as a woman. She is, in my book, one strong, smart, humble person. She takes no credit and gives all credit to her staff.

PROFILE:

ADC: In your view, what are some of the biggest challenges currently facing the drycleaning industry? How do you see DLI aiding in these areas?

KB: I think the biggest things going forward are government regulations. I’ve been in this field for many years, and I don’t ever remember them coming on this strongly. Maybe it’s because I just wasn’t conscious of them, or maybe because I’ve become more conscious after COVID about how the government can really step in and create hardships for our industry. If we don’t fight back, they could collapse this industry.

Right now, there are government regulations on the table that deal with perc (perchloroethylene), PFAS (perand polyfluoroalkyl substances), single-use poly bags, minimum wage, credit card compliance… the list is endless. And if we don’t have a watchdog out there protecting us from the government, we could be in trouble. That’s one of the things that DLI does on a national level, along with what the joint state associations (JSA) do on a regional level — protect us and protect the industry from some of these government regulations.

So, I think that’s the No. 1 role for DLI right now — to be aware of what’s going on in the industry. DLI’s role as an advocate for this industry is more critical than ever. We are all so busy running our businesses that we

don’t see what’s going on in California. But we know what’s happening in California is coming to New York next, and to Florida after that, and so on. Having DLI watch things like that is key, and they don’t have the power to do that without membership.

To me, the second key role for DLI is education. The pandemic accelerated the need for that, because a lot of the mom-and-pop stores disappeared. The people still standing are the ones who are investing in education and are finding ways to learn and grow while still running their businesses. DLI has really stepped up in that area. They’ve had virtual training classes, weekly peer-to-peer Zoom calls, monthly webinars, and regional seminars. They’ve really made big strides with education.

ADC: What is a challenge that dry cleaners are facing on a more day-to-day level?

KB: One of the biggest challenges is getting our members to realize that automation is here to stay. I think a lot of our members are thinking they can’t afford automation, but they can’t afford not to automate. It’s going to be critical to the future of those in the industry. So, we’re trying to educate them on the benefits of using their labor costs to pay for this automation. I think will be the helpful for them.

Automation is something I’ve struggled with. We’re

Products have proven to last up to 10 times longer than similar production in this industry and applications.

We have many installations with steam boilers that have been in service for over 50-years, 10 hours per day.

Our heating surface or amount of steel absorbing energy has always been 2 to 3 times that of other units (up to 6 sf of heating surface per boiler horsepower, which some units are closer to 2 sf of steel per hp, and some even 1 sf).

Feinstein Promoted to American Drycleaner Publisher

Thompson remains president of textile care B2B publications group

CHICAGO — American Trade Magazines LLC

(ATM), the parent company of textile care B2B publications American Drycleaner,American Coin-Op and American Laundry News, announces a change in leadership.

Effective August 1, Associate Publisher and National Sales Director Donald Feinstein has been promoted to publisher, assuming responsibility for the group’s editorial, production, circulation, promotions and sales operations.

Charles Thompson, the longtime head of ATM, remains company president while taking a step back from overseeing day-to-day operations. He joined the publications group in 1989 as a regional sales manager for then-parent company Crain Communications and earned promotions to national sales manager, associate publisher and publisher.

Thompson acquired the magazines from Crain in 2011 and retained Feinstein and two other ATM veterans to ensure the publications’ continuity.

“Don has led our company’s sales department for more than a decade,” Thompson says. “And, as associate publisher, he’s excelled at handling many of a publisher’s duties. He’s earned the opportunity to take this next step in his career and I’m excited to watch his

continued growth as an executive and a leader.”

Feinstein, a graduate of Drake University, joined the ATM team in 2001 as production manager before shifting to ad sales as a regional manager in 2005. When Thompson acquired the magazine group, Feinstein was named national sales director, then several years later added the duties of associate publisher.

“In every position I’ve held with American Trade Magazines, I’ve had the opportunity and pleasure to interact with our industry’s leading manufacturers and distributors, as well as the amazing audience of laundry and drycleaning business owners, facility administrators and managers that our magazine group serves,” he says. “I look forward to building on those relationships and continuing ATM’s tradition of industry service that Charlie has set.”

I can play that game too by just not paying my bills. But that doesn’t mean that I have successful business.’” To better understand the P&L, Engh suggests looking at the company’s EBITAL (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Amortization and Leasing) information: “To get to that number, there are a number of KPIs that we look at, such as total labor cost, utility costs, supply costs, marketing costs, overhead (including rents), and execu- tive compensation.” While P&L is crucial,

The biggest factor in determining the success or failure of the business is the team put into place to serve its clients. So, when a cleaner has built a winning team, it’s crucial to keep that team in place and building for the future. When leaders start to take their team for granted, however, this could spell disaster. There are many ways to show appreciation for a job well done. While pay raises are always welcome, there are other methods cleaners can use to make team members feel wanted, and needed, for what they contribute to the company. 6 American Drycleaner, June 2023 www.americandrycleaner.com (Photo: iStock.com/boygovideo) Incentivizing Employees to Stay Building businesses that attract — and keep — the best teams By Dave Davis, Editor 0623adc_p006-008,010-Incentivizing Employees to Stay-FINAL.indd AM CELEBRATING WINS When it comes to making employees feel valued, simply acknowledging good work is a great place to start. “As management, we play a huge role in incentivizing our staff,” says Dr. Alex Ellis, a transformational speaker and trainer who specializes in workplace culture. “If we feel a worker is going above and beyond the call of duty on their job, if they are a peak performer, think that celebrating them and their contribution not only encourages them to keep up the good work, but I think it also encourages their co-workers to want to do the same.” Being “seen” is important to workers, Ellis says. “Sometimes, just simply acknowledging them by saying how much you appreciate them goes a long way,” he says. “‘I see you’ve been coming in early. I see you stay in later. You’ve increased your productivity by leaps and bounds from when you first started. appreciate what you bring to the table. Thanks so much for being such an exceptional employee.’ Just acknowledging it goes a long way because, at the end of the day, we all want to be seen as individuals.” “I think management teams have to be thinking outside the box,” says David Grippi, chief operating officer at Clean Brands, a garment-care franchise that represents, among other brands, Lapels Cleaners and Martinizing Cleaners. “It’s seeing what motivates employees outside of pay that can get them to do different things, whether that’s working for a bonus day off, or rewards like being named the team member of the week or the month.” FLEXING WHEN POSSIBLE While it’s not a new concept, the idea of flexible work schedules blossomed during the COVID pandemic. While the structure of a drycleaning company limits the options when it comes to scheduling, cleaners shouldn’t overlook this potential perk. “We’ve had some owners who have gotten flexible,” Grippi says. “We have an owner who has four mothers on staff, and they want to be home for their kids in the morning. They came to the owner and asked if it would be OK if they came in and did their production at 8 p.m., worked until 11 p.m., and then went home, slept, and could get their kids up and ready for school in the morning. The owner thought it was a great idea, and it’s worked fantastic for her.” Solutions like this might not work for everyone on staff, Grippi says, but leaders can examine possibilities on a case-by-case basis. “It’s hard to be flexible with the counter, which has to be open during store hours,” he says, “but if you have people in production wanting to work nights, it’s not a bad idea, because you’re going to walk in at 7 a.m. www.americandrycleaner.com American Drycleaner, June 2023 0623adc_p006-008,010-Incentivizing Employees to Stay-FINAL.indd 7 5/16/23 It’s important for owners of drycleaning companies to have good instincts about both people and business, but the old saying “you can’t manage what you can’t measure” is one successful leaders take to heart. Measuring their company’s key performance indica- tors—KPIs—gives an owner or manager a window into how the business is actually doing, rather than relying on their “gut,” or worse, just hoping things are going in the right direction. “KPIs are scorecard of measurements that drive the activity of the business,” says Kermit Engh. He owns Fashion Cleaners in Omaha, Nebraska, and is managing partner of Methods for Management (MfM), a consulting firm for the drycleaning industry. Engh has found, both through personal experience and from working with MfM clients, that getting a true view of a company’s viability is key to future survival. “Ultimately, success is measured by the profitability Using KPIs as a GPS for your company’s success By Dave Davis, Editor 6 American Drycleaner, March 2023 www.americandrycleaner.com How Do YouMeasure Success? 0323adc_p006-008,010,020-Measuring Success-FINAL.indd 6 2/15/23 PM and sustainability of the business,” he says. “If it’s not profitable, it’s not sustainable.” Diana Vollmer, managing director of the Ascend Con- sulting Group, agrees with Engh’s assessment. “By far, the most important KPI in an ongoing busi- ness is profitability,” says Vollmer, who also runs the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) Management Group. “All the other underlying KPIs are designed to contribute to long-term profit. KPIs are a roadmap to how to improve your business.” FACTS AND FIGURES Part of owners effectively using their company’s KPIs as a GPS for success is determining which ones are most important to their business. “I find an awful lot of people—and used to be guilty of this, as well—who are always focused on the top line, or the gross sales number on the P&L (profit and loss) statement. Ultimately, that’s not the most important number on that report. It’s the bottom line,” Engh says. He says he’s been surprised in the past by owners he’s spoken with who don’t understand what profitability ac- tually means. “I find it very interesting when I ask them, ‘How do you know if you’re making a profit?’ and they say, ‘I checked my bank account.’ My comment to that always is, ‘Well,
it’s far from the only KPI that can inform a leader about how his or her business is per- forming. Modern point-of-sale (POS) systems can pro- vide increasingly granular data on almost every aspect of business. “This is an area where the POS systems have really stepped up over recent years,” Engh says. “You’re able to create your own customized dashboard to measure the production and revenue numbers that are important to your business. At a glance, you know how you’re doing. There’s no more digging through numerous reports or begging the POS company to create a report for you.” Another KPI that Engh finds valuable is pieces per op- erating hour (PPOH). “Most dry cleaners are familiar with this, but still run into some that don’t measure it,” he says. “It’s easy to calculate by dividing the number of pieces you processed by the total hours that it took you to process them. Many folks then post this number daily to let the staff know how they did the day before. find that important so that the staff knows if they are on target, and if they had a good day or not.” Vollmer suggests drycleaning owners also pay atten- tion to other critical KPIs, such as: www.americandrycleaner.com American Drycleaner, March 2023 7 (ImagelicensedbyIngramImage) 0323adc_p006-008,010,020-Measuring Success-FINAL.indd 2/15/23

ready to put in an automated system, and they’re extremely expensive. If I didn’t have great mentors in my life, showing me how I can afford it by using my labor costs, I probably wouldn’t have. It could conceivably stunt your growth or prevent advancements in your company.

ADC: Has DLI’s role changed in recent years for dry cleaners? If so, how has it evolved?

KB: Change is a strange word. Some people fear it, some people embrace it, and some people crave it. Personally, I think change is a sign of progress. I think it’s constant in most organizations, and that it’s essential for growth.

For many organizations and companies, COVID fueled that need for change. It accelerated the changes that needed to be made. One of the changes that DLI has made since the pandemic is the weekly peer-to-peer Zoom calls, which allow us to connect with our members in a much better, greater way. I think that was one of the things we were lacking. We had our membership, and we put up a website, but that’s not enough. It’s allowed us to connect face to face with our members.

DLI has also added marketing labs, they’ve done virtual education, social media, and again, the webinars, so I think a lot of good things came out of COVID, as far as what we can do virtually. It’s been great to see our

members face to face — to see their smiles and see their challenges, because they’re written all over their faces. It’s made a huge difference.

ADC: When you step down at the end of your term, what do you want to see as you look back?

KB: I want to look back and see that no dry cleaner, regardless of size, is left behind. I was that $500,000-ayear dry cleaner, and at that size, you have to do it all. Then you have the $2 million-plus cleaners who have people who can do it all. I feel that sometimes there’s a gap, and I really don’t want anyone to get left behind.

I want to create opportunities for our members to continue to learn and grow, and to understand production utilization numbers. I want our members to know we believe in them, and we’re here to help them. I want to empower them to be great, to be strong and to believe they can achieve more.

When I took on the role of DCM, and even as district board member, treasurer and vice president, I was only able to achieve those steps because there were people greater than me who believed in me. And so, I realized that, with the power of others believing in you, you can achieve so much more. So, that is what I want people to take away from my presidency — that I believed in all of our members, and that they can always achieve more.

5 Ways to Get Online Reviews for Your Drycleaning Business

Online customer reviews are essential for growing your drycleaning business and boosting your brand as the preferred choice among your competitors. You need plenty of Google reviews to show up in searches and build trust with potential customers.

Here are five ways to secure more reviews to help boost your business and increase confidence in your brand.

1. Ask for reviews in person.

Before asking for a review, you’ve got to have excellent customer service and experience. Focus on providing:

• Timely delivery

• Friendly customer service

• Attention to detail

Take the opportunity to ask for a review when a returning customer is picking up their clean clothes. You have a better chance at gathering more reviews when you connect with the customer in person and ask them upfront once you’re aware they’re happy with your service.

You can direct them to your review page by giving them a business card with a QR code to scan, having a sign at your register, or otherwise sharing clear instructions on how to best leave you a review on Google. Whichever you choose, just make your review process as seamless as

possible, so customers will be more inclined to give you the feedback you need.

2. Request reviews by emailing customers.

Many businesses use email to request reviews because they’re accessible and easy to scale. The key to a successful email review request is to make sure your message is short, polite and to the point. You can say something like:

Dear [First Name],

Thank you for choosing [Your Dry Cleaner] for [Service]. We hope you love it! If you do, would you consider leaving us a Google review? [URL] Your feedback helps us continue providing great service and provides others like you with valuable insight.

Thank you in advance!

[Dry Cleaner Rep]

Timing is important, and you should send an email review request shortly after a customer picks up their clothes — within one business day. You want to gather their positive thoughts while they’re still fresh.

3. Follow up with customers via text. Texts have a high open rate and are a guaranteed way to get your review request seen almost instantly. Get customers opted in to receive texts from you by:

• Having them text a keyword such as DRYCLEAN to your business number

• Putting an SMS Chat widget on your homepage, which customers can use to start text conversations with you

• Asking customers to agree to receive texts via your contact forms

After your customers are opted in to receive texts from your business, send a quick thank you along with a link to your review page. Since you’re working with a smaller character count, you need to keep the message brief and straightforward. Pre-made text templates come in handy here, so you don’t have to draft a message every single time you send a review request.

Touch on all key points, such as:

“Hi, [First Name]! Thanks for choosing [Your Dry Cleaner]. To best serve you and others, would you mind leaving us a review?

Here’s the link: [URL]. Thank you!”

A well-equipped business texting software with review management capabilities can help you connect with your customers and manage reviews all in the same place.

4. Encourage customers to interact with you on social media platforms.

Maintaining an active presence

32 American Drycleaner, September 2023 www.americandrycleaner.com
(Photo: © ra2studio/Depositphotos)

on your Facebook and Instagram business pages helps draw attention to your brand. With the right posts, you’ll encourage customers to engage, and you’ll ultimately gain more reviews. Here’s how:

• Highlight photos of happy customers with their clean clothes (with their permission).

• Post a link to your review page, encouraging customers to freely share their thoughts.

• Share existing positive reviews and testimonials.

• Run giveaways or contests that require participants to leave a review to enter.

Social media works well for people searching for local recommendations from their friends and family, giving you an opportunity to jump in and engage when you’re tagged in posts or comments. From there, you can ask for feedback and direct them to your review page via a link.

Leveraging social proof is valuable for your page and demonstrates that you value what customers have to say about your drycleaning business. It builds credibility, encourages others to share their thoughts, and even helps prospective customers make a buying decision.

5. Respond to all your reviews — both positive and negative.

Whether your customers leave positive or negative reviews, the most important thing is that you respond to every single one of them — regardless of what they say. Responding shows that you value your customers’ opinions and are willing to get involved to provide the best experience possible.

Customers value transparency from businesses. In fact, it’s expected from consumers as part of their relationship with you. Replying to all reviews is a great way to strengthen your bond, especially

when you are:

• Being empathetic and positive

• Expressing gratitude for feedback

• Using the right tone of voice

ABC Teams Up to Launch EmpowerWear Partnership

Joint venture with Dress for Success Pittsburgh to help women in need

PITTSBURGH — America’s Best Cleaners (ABC), a national certification agency and consulting firm for the drycleaning and textile care industry, recently partnered with Dress for Success Pittsburgh for the launch of EmpowerWear, a collaboration aimed at empowering women, supporting local communities, and promoting environmental sustainability.

In this venture, ABC assisted in the collection of gently used women’s professional and casual attire via a pilot program with its local Affiliate, Owl Cleaners.

Through biannual collection campaigns and social media engagement, the partnership seeks to provide professional and casual attire to women in need, helping them achieve economic independence and access employment opportunities. The pilot program with Owl Cleaners kicked off Aug. 15 and ran through Sept.15, 2023.

“Dress for Success Pittsburgh was the right partnership opportunity for ABC, our local Affiliate Owl Cleaners, and partners Little Moon Marketing and Cleaners Supply,” says Chris White, ABC executive director. “With so many women and single mothers being set back economically after the pandemic, our goal is that this pilot program will help build confidence, esteem, and success. We hope this program can be deployed to all of our Affiliate cities very soon.”

“Appropriate clothing is the basic foundation every woman needs to look and feel confident as she showcases her skills and abilities in an interview or new job,” says Dress for Success Pittsburgh CEO Tanya Vokes. “By donating items they no longer need, EmpowerWear donors are empowering local women and promoting environmental sustainability, making a real impact across the region.”

Dress for Success Pittsburgh is a nonprofit serving Allegheny, Butler, Fayette, Greene, and Washington counties in Pennsylvania. Its mission is to empower women who are entering and returning to the workforce by collecting new and gently worn women’s work-appropriate clothing, shoes, accessories, makeup and personal care items. In addition to collecting donations, the organization also operates the MGC Networking Group through

which members make financial donations in support of its mission.

“Women visit Dress for Success Pittsburgh for job search, interview, employment, job training, rebuild (major life change) or court appearance attire, along with professional development resources like resume support,” says Calynn Abdullah-Donbrock, director of communications & development at Dress for Success Pittsburgh. “Our primary way of reaching women is through our mobile services events, meeting women right where they are with one of our three mobile boutiques. Mobile services events provide a solution to a common barrier faced by many women across our region: lack of access to adequate transportation. We go to community centers, faithbased institutions, trade schools, and universities with a high population of first-generation students.”

The partnership with Dress for Success Pittsburgh will allow dry cleaning customers to easily donate clothing via their regular scheduled delivery with ABC’s local affiliate, Owl Cleaners

“We’re truly pleased at Owl Cleaners to be partnering with Dress For Success Pittsburgh,” says Owl Cleaners Owner Joe Ziccarelli. “This collaboration feels deeply meaningful to us. We believe it will significantly enhance the visibility of Dress for Success Pittsburgh’s crucial services while also helping to maintain their inventory of needed items. We’re eager to see the positive impacts of this collaboration unfold in our community.”

Study: US Consumer Confidence, Expectations Improved in July

Conference Board indexes rise to their highest levels since 2021

NEW YORK — The Conference Board — a global, nonprofit think tank and business membership organization — recently released its monthly economic indexes, and its findings paint a more positive outlook for the coming months.

•The Board’s Consumer Confidence Index rose again in July to 117.0 (1985=100), up from 110.1 in June.

•The Present Situation Index — based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market

34 American Drycleaner, September 2023 www.americandrycleaner.com AROUND THE INDUSTRY

conditions — improved to 160.0 (1985=100) from 155.3 in June.

•The Expectations Index — based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions — improved to 88.3 (1985=100) from 80.0 in June.

More importantly, the Board stated in its release, the Expectations Index climbed well above 80, which is the level that historically signals a recession within the next year. Despite rising interest rates, consumers are more upbeat, the organization says, likely reflecting lower inflation and a tight labor market.

“Consumer confidence rose in July 2023 to its highest level since July 2021, reflecting pops in both current conditions and expectations,” says Dana Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board. “Greater confidence was evident across all age groups, and among both consumers earning incomes less than $50,000 and those making more than $100,000.”

Peterson adds: “Assessments of the present situation rose in July on brighter views of employment conditions, where the spread between consumers saying jobs are ‘plentiful’ versus ‘hard to get’ widened further. This likely reflects upbeat feelings about a labor market that

continues to outperform. When asked about current family financial conditions (a measure not included in calculating the Present Situation Index), the share of respondents citing a ‘good’ situation rose, and those citing ‘bad’ conditions fell, signaling still-healthy family finances. This might reflect softening inflation and continued income support from employment.”

Peterson says that expectations for the next six months improved materially, reflecting greater confidence about future business conditions and job availability.

“This likely reveals consumers’ belief that labor market conditions will remain favorable,” she says.

Despite this more optimistic view for future months, however, the Board’s findings reveal that consumers’ assessment of current business conditions was slightly less optimistic in July, with 21.9% of consumers saying business conditions were “good,” down from June’s 23.4%, and 15.2% said business conditions were “bad,” which is essentially unchanged from 15.3% in June.

Consumers were more optimistic about the short-term business conditions outlook in July, with 17.1% of consumers expecting business conditions to improve, up from 14.6%. Meanwhile, 14.0% expected business conditions to worsen, down from 17.7% in June.

Clocking In, Pulling Together and Built for Comfort

10 YEARS AGO. Clocking In — Roughly 42% of dry cleaners were working more hours in 2013 than they were five years earlier, according to respondents of the American Drycleaner Wire survey. While 32.1% said their schedules were “about the same,” 26.3% reported they were not working more compared to five years ago. When asked what their most time-consuming tasks were, 68.1% reported that “production/quality control” took up most of their day. Bookkeeping/accounting was the main task of 42%, and customer service came in third at 39.1%. (Respondents were invited to select up to three choices from the list.)

25 YEARS AGO. Care Label Support — IFI, NCA-I and NCPDC were among the organizations that submitted comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about its proposed changes to the Care Label Rule. IFI said it disagreed with textile manufacturers’ claims that mandatory washing instructions on labels would increase testing and garment costs, saying testing costs would be minimal when spread across all the garments in a style line. IFI also supported the proposal to require either washing or drycleaning in addition to wetcleaning instructions.

50 YEARS AGO. Pulling Together

— Initial results of a membership

survey showed that California Fabricare Institute (CFI) members were predominantly in favor of group advertising. In fact, 90% of those replying believe dry cleaners in their area should advertise cooperatively in an effort to revive business. Three-fourths of the contributions would be volunteered in the $15 to $25 per month categories, but 8% said that they would be willing to assess themselves more than $75 per month. More said they’d rather participate in newspaper campaigns, rather than either radio or billboards.

85 YEARS AGO. Built for Comfort — Billed as “the drycleaning industry’s

first completely air-conditioned plant and store,” the plant of Sanders TriCleaning Co. in Detroit was finished as of September 1938. The cooling agent for the air-conditioning system was well water from a 250-ft. well with a flow of 250 gallons per minute. Other unusual features included drop-lights which were suspended from trolleys and could be adjusted for service at any place along the line without plugging into floor connections, and bus bars which provided flexible plug-in power distribution at any point.
