Five star laundry adds second tunnel, automates much of plant
By Bruce Beggs, editorial director
CHICAGO — When Five Star Laundry started in 1999 by opening its plant here, it began building its hospitality linen business on the promise of producing high-quality finished linen in a timely fashion for its clients. Today, while serving 30 hotels totaling 14,000 guestrooms in and around Chicagoland, upholding that promise has never been more important.
And so it was about a year ago when Five Star Laundry decided to invest approximately $5 million to bolster its plant automation and production capacity to meet the needs of the growing hospitality market in the Windy City.
CUSTOMER-OWNED ONLY
The company’s operation exclusively handles customer-owned goods seven days a week, 24
hours a day. It processes a wide variety of rooms linen, from flat sheets to fitted duvet covers and decorative top sheets and every-
thing in between.
Concerning food and beverage items, Five Star Laundry processes a variety of different materials,

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) member companies again reported their operations are safer than those of non-members as incident and serious injury rates
TRSA survey results showed an annual total reported incident rate (TRIR) rate of 5.3 per 100 employees, 7% less than the 5.7 indicated for the industry by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The number of injuries per 100 employees that resulted in days away from work or restricted duty
Over the survey’s past four years, TRSA members’ TRIR has dropped 36.4%, compared with the industry-wide 27.8% decline; the DART rate is down 36.5%, compared with 20%.
TRSA President/CEO Joseph Ricci says the figures reflect substantial progress toward TRSA’s ultimate objective of eliminating

Survey: Increased lighting, video cameras among common security measures
CHICAGO — Just 20% of laundry administrators and managers polled in February’s AmericanLaundryNews.com Wire survey say their company or institution has experienced workplace violence involving their laundry operation or its employees.
These incidents of workplace violence included vandalism of employee vehicles, a fight between two employees working on the wash aisle, and an attack on a member of the management team by an employee.
Nearly 87% of respondents say their company or institution investigates the background of potential employees, and 80% say their institution/company doesn’t require psychological testing (13.3% didn’t know). More than 73% of respondents say their company or institution require its employees to display identification badges.
A wide variety of security measures are in place, according to the survey results (respondents were asked to check all that applied at their workplace). Most common is increased lighting on grounds and/or parking lot, cited by 84.6% of respondents. Equal shares of 61.5% say their workplaces require visitors to sign in, and utilize video surveillance.
Nearly 39% of respondents say there are security guards in or around their facility, and 23.1% say employees must use a key card or punch in an ID code for entry.
While the Wire survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific.
Subscribers to Wire e-mails—distributed twice weekly—are invited to take the industry survey anonymously online each month. such as best-practices documentation, conference presentations and
The association last year introduced a Safety Summit, during which members shared techniques for preventing accidents through upgrading equipment and increasing employee awareness of opportunities to avoid
mishaps. Attendees participated in interactive discussions facilitated by industry leaders to develop best practices and policies. This year’s Summit is slated for May 21-22 in Indianapolis.
Rick Pollock, who presides over the American Society of Safety Engineers, describes the Summit as rare among trade groups, which usually are not as far-reaching in such collaboration.
By breaking attendees into groups in which they share solutions to the industry’s most pressing safety problems, Pollock observes, “TRSA is identifying the range of key issues and how various organizations are dealing with them.”
The annual survey results set the backdrop for such cooperation. Published as the Textile Services Industry Safety Report, the most recent data-sharing covered 2007 to 2011, drawn from 66 textile services companies operating 792 facilities.
They are categorized as either linen supply (processing mostly table and bed linen, serving largely food/beverage, healthcare and hospitality businesses) or industrial laundry (work uniforms and floor mats for most types of businesses, with automotive and manufactur-
ing as the largest markets). TRSA linen members have reduced their DART and TRIR 16% and 18.4% respectively in the past four years; industrial, 52% and 44.1%.
TRSA emphasizes benchmarking members’ performance with U.S. businesses as a whole and other specific types of industries to dramatize the organization’s effectiveness. Economy-wide, the U.S. has seen 16.7% TRIR and 14.3% DART declines in the last four years. Manufacturing businesses (operators of large-scale machinery and material-handling systems like those of textile services operations) have dropped 24.1% and 20% respectively.
However, the manufacturing TRIR and DART in 2011 were 23% and 40% lower than those of the textile services businesses as a whole.
TRSA’s conscientiousness about safety is extending to the industry’s customers’ use of its products. The association recently introduced a Hygienically Clean certification program recognizing launderers who conduct microbiological testing on their goods. At press time, the association was preparing to announce results of a third-party assessment of the health implications of shop towel use. ALN

Consolidated Laundry Machinery hires Pharis as company president
POMONA, Calif. — Consolidated Laundry Machinery (CLM), which manufactures industrial laundry dryers and other equipment, has hired Martin Pharis as company president. He replaces Vice President and General Manager Carolyn Landsperg, who retired in January.
Pharis brings an extensive and diverse management background, with expertise in both sales and operations, CLM says. He comes from Prudential Overall Supply, where, as a director of production, he was responsible for industrial and cleanroom operations throughout the United States. His primary role was to improve operational efficiencies through
process changes, plant revitalization and equipment design.
Previously, he worked in operations at Mission Linen Supply, was a regional sales director for Tingue, Brown & Co., and spent nearly 20 years at Alsco in a variety of operations roles.
“We conducted a thorough search for a leader with deep laundry industry experience, a firsthand knowledge of CLM and its equipment, an extensive understanding of customers’ needs, and a passion for service,” says Jason Farber, principal of Carlin Capital Partners, which owns CLM. “Martin brings everything that we were looking for, and we are excited to help him implement his vision for CLM and its future.”
“I was presented with an opportunity to lead a company that I know well and that has a great history as an equipment supplier in our industry,” Pharis says. “In CLM, I see a solid foundation from which much potential for growth exists, and I look forward to building on that which CLM does well and improving in areas where we can provide even better products and value-added services to our customers past, present and future.”
Landsperg retired to spend more time with family and to pursue volunteer work, CLM says. She spent her entire career in the laundry industry, the last 20 with CLM.
The company remains committed to “continuous innovation and improvement” of its dryers and related equipment, it says. ALN
The fine art of fine-tuning
it seems that making the required adjustments in a laundry operation is a neverending process. We must consider a number of variables as we make periodic adjustments. With this in mind, I have decided to discuss—over the course of the next several months—the factors and opportunities available to every manager in fine-tuning their operation.
First, let’s take a look at the soil-sort department. This area varies by laundry, and the quality of the process in this area can make a major impact on the overall operation.
The purpose of sorting soiled linen is to remove trash and other foreign material before the linen is washed, and to facilitate the proper cleaning and handling of the linen through the laundry.
The larger the laundry, the greater the number of sorting classifications. Smaller laundries may mix all large dry items together, while large laundries will sort thermal blankets, bath blankets, knitted contour sheets and incontinent pads into separate classifications.
The more detailed the sort, the more the wash formula and the drying times can be customized for each individual product.
Ideally, linen should be handled as few as times as possible as it moves through the laundry. A thorough soil-sort process eliminates the need to sort the product after it has been washed and conditioned or dried.
For example, we use a soil-sort classification just for our white hospital bath towels. This allows the operator on the small-piece folder to quickly process the items without having to handle unrelated items. Once processed, the items are placed in stacks of 10 on a conveyor belt that moves through an automatic tie machine and then delivers the product to the cart make-up area.
Bath towels are only touched three times before they are ready to be packed: during the soil-sort process, as they are fed into the small-piece folder and, finally, as they are placed on the conveyor. This economy of effort leads to a highly efficient, effective laundry.
In reviewing the soil-sort area of the laundry, I normally check the established classifications to determine if they still meet the needs of the facility. I check to see how many times each must be handled before the product is ready to be placed in carts for delivery. This survey tells me if I need to add or subtract soil-sort classifications.
I will also review what percentage of my overall work volume is represented by each classification. I want to make sure that highvolume items receive the greatest amount of attention. I also use this information to make sure that all high-volume items are placed in appropriate positions along the soil-sort platform. Efficiency can be improved when high-volume items are placed in the best positions.
It is important to remember that the mix in your laundry will change over time. Your process requires periodic review to ensure that the underlying mix has not changed.
Review and re-evaluate production standards for this area during this fine-tuning process. Changes made in the number of classifications and the placement of each in the soil-sort area will impact employee productivity. Being able to measure the impact of the changes and validate that you have improved your operation is a critical component in being a good manager.
Finally, assess the quality of your soil-sort process. How many items are showing up in the wrong category? A bath towel accidentally sorted into a load of white sheets will need to either be rewashed or gathered, dried and then routed to the appropriate finish area. The most economical way to process linen is to do it right the first time. Tracking the amount of linen that is incorrectly sorted can give you an ongoing measure of your soil-sort area’s effectiveness.

Five star
These items are processed in traditional open-pocket washers for greater mechanical action and increased flexibility in wash formulas to remove food, oil and wine stains. To preserve the high-quality finish it provides, the company returns all processed round table linen and skirting on hangers.
Where there is a hotel, there is, of course, almost always a generous supply of pool towels and other terry items. Towels and terry are processed by like items so washcloths and hand towels receive less drying time as opposed to the larger bath sheets. All items are folded and packaged per each hotel’s individual specifications.
And while it is skilled at efficiently handling bulk items, Five Star Laundry also cleans a multitude of specialty items (blankets, mattress pads/covers, drapes and table skirting among them), dry cleans hotel employee uniforms, and provides same-day laundry and dry cleaning valet service for hotel guests.
The company—which also has plants serving the Orlando, Dallas and Washington, D.C., markets— purchases and uses virtually all of its process laundry equipment from G.A. Braun. Additionally, it uses only Ecolab products and services for its wash chemistry, plus it partners with Avendra for procurement, supply chain management
and consulting services.
AHEAD OF THE CURVE
The company needed to increase its production capabilities beyond its existing tunnel and openpocket systems while improving material flow to facilitate gains in productivity and to reduce operating hours. In the fall of 2011, Five Star Laundry implemented a plan to automate the soil sortation, rail delivery and clean rail storage systems, provided by E-Tech, to free up space to add wash-room capacity.
This eliminated any tunnel system constraints due to manual processing and the need to have multiple, full-time staffers manage the movement of materials throughout the plant.
To complement the company’s existing 110-pound Braun tunnel system, it added a brand-new second tunnel—this one a 150-pound, 11-chamber Braun model. With this addition, Five Star was able to more than double its tunnel volume while gaining the ability to cut back to two shifts during peak season.
The plant is capable of producing 140,000 clean pounds per day (excluding specialty items), says Jose Monarrez, Five Star Laundry’s director of engineering.
The project was timed to take advantage of lower occupancies at the hotels that Five Star Laundry serves. Renovation and installation work—which began in October 2011 and was completed in March 2012—was done between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily so the laundry could maintain
production the rest of the time. The company was able to meet its orders and did not have to send work out.
“The new Braun tunnel allows us a number of different advantages,” says a Five Star Laundry spokesman. “First, it’s a 150-pound tunnel as opposed to the original 110pound unit that we have. So from that standpoint, the new tunnel gave us the ability to produce more linen in a similar period of time.
“Second of all, the quality that comes out of the new tunnel is absolutely fabulous. We have no problem with the finished quality. We have no problem with the brightness of the linen, no problem
with the softness. The whole tunnel process is fantastic.”
The new wash aisle solution also allows for process redundancy in the event of a planned or unplanned outage, so clients can be confident that shipments will be on time. It has also reduced Five Star Laundry’s water and utilities usage, the company says.
Five Star Laundry retained four 450-pound open-pocket washers and two 500-pound dryers, also from Braun, which collectively yield 28,000-36,000 pounds of goods during a typical 16-hour operating period. A rail loop was added to support equipment loading and unloading.
It’s projected that Five Star Laundry will see a two-year return on its investment.
“It’s a competitive advantage,” says Alexandra Samis, Five Star Laundry’s director of sales in Chicago, of the improvements. “We certainly are the most modern, most technologically advanced. I think it puts us ahead of the curve for our competitive set here, and also nationally.”
This marks the fifth large-scale project and the fourth Braun tunnel installed with Five Star Laundry, and the hospitality linen company plans to include Braun in its plans when considering future expansion opportunities.

Electrolux smart washers will forever change the way you do laundry.
Imagine a washer smart enough to weigh the load size and add precisely the correct amount of water. Imagine a laundry chemical controller smart enough to adjust dosing for accurate water ratio each time.
Electrolux Professional washers do all that
Underloading washers is a common problem in many laundries, wasting water, chemicals, and energy. That’s why Electrolux developed AWSTM, a UNIQUE feature that automatically matches water consumption to load size. Combine that with SmartDosingTM which adjusts laundry chemicals to water ratio, and you will see immediate savings and superior wash results – every time, automatically.
Experience
Electrolux’s SmartDosingTM controller automatically dispenses the correct amount of chemicals for the weight load.

Vacuum Loading & Automatic Unloading
The patented Vacuum Loading system allows operators to quickly load items of all sizes into the dryer with minimal effort. A powerful suction pulls items inward, with no risk or hazard to attendants. In less than one minute, attendants fully load the dryer. From the same area, items are then automatically unloaded. A patented system, Spirotilt, allows for seamless automated unloading without dryer tilting – further enhancing ease of use. All loading and unloading is completed in the same area –boosting overall productivity.

Census Bureau projects slower-growing, older, more diverse nation by 2060
WASHINGTON — The U.S. population will be considerably older and more racially and ethnically diverse by 2060, according to projections released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau. The projections of population by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin, covering the 2012-2060 period, are the first set based on the 2010 Census.
“The next half century marks key points in continuing trends — the U.S. will become a plurality nation, where the non-Hispanic white population remains the largest single group, but no group is in the majority,” says Acting Director Thomas L. Mesenbourg.
Furthermore, the population is projected to grow much more slowly over the next several decades, compared with the last projections released in 2008 and 2009.
The population age 65 and older is expected to more than double by 2060, from 43.1 million to 92.0 million, and will represent just over one in five U.S. residents.
Baby boomers, defined as persons born between 1946 and 1964, numbered 76.4 million in 2012 and account for about onequarter of the population. In 2060, when the youngest of them would be 96 years old, they are projected to number around 2.4 million
and represent 0.6% of the total population.
The non-Hispanic white population is projected to peak in 2024, at 199.6 million, up from 197.8 million in 2012. Unlike other race or ethnic groups, however, its population is projected to slowly decrease, falling by nearly 20.6 million from 2024 to 2060.
Meanwhile, the Hispanic population would more than double, from 53.3 million in 2012 to 128.8 million in 2060. The black population is expected to increase from 41.2 million to 61.8 million over the same period. The Asian population is projected to more than double, from 15.9 million in 2012 to 34.4 million in 2060.
Among the remaining race groups, American Indians and Alaska Natives would increase from 3.9 million to 6.3 million. The Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander population is expected to nearly double, from 706,000 to 1.4 million.
All in all, minorities, now 37% of the U.S. population, are projected to comprise 57% of the population in 2060. (Minorities consist of all but the single-race, non-Hispanic white population.) The total minority population would more than double, from 116.2 million to 241.3 million over the period. ALN
Firm retools equipment, remodels plant for Crothall Laundry Services
OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. — ARCO/Murray National Construction Co. recently completed the equipment retooling and plant remodel of a Crothall Laundry Services healthcare laundry in Manassas, Va., the design-build firm reports.
The project scope included all demolition and construction necessary for the installation and relocation of new/existing equipment, which included tunnel system dryers, ironers, lint collectors, small-piece folders, blanket folders, and a new overhead monorail system. ARCO/ Murray provided all utility connections to such equipment, including compressed air, gas, steam/condensate return, and water, along with all process equipment ventilation. All work was scheduled to keep the plant fully operational with minimal shutdowns and delays. The ARCO/Murray team was able to accomplish this through off-hours work and constant communication between all project team members.
From ARCO/Murray, Elliot Mata served as project executive and Doug Houser was project manager. PAC Industries provided the equipment. All monorail system fabrication and installation was provided by E-Tech. ALN
Natural gas costs on way up: EIA
WASHINGTON — Falling crude oil prices will help continue to push the retail price of gasoline lower this year and next, according to a recent Short-Term Energy Outlook from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
EIA expects that falling crude prices will help national average regular gasoline retail prices fall from an average of $3.63 per gallon in 2012 to annual averages of $3.44 per gallon in 2013 and $3.34 per gallon in 2014.
Diesel fuel retail prices averaged $3.97 per gallon during 2012 and are forecast to fall to an average of $3.87 per gallon in 2013 and $3.78 per gallon in 2014.
Meanwhile, the cost of natural gas is expected to go up, EIA reports. The Henry Hub natural gas spot price, which averaged $4 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2011 and $2.75 per million MMBtu in 2012, is expected to average $3.74 per MMBtu in 2013 and $3.90 per MMBtu in 2014. ALN

White Plains Linen expands offerings through new alliance
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — White Plains Linen | LINENS à la Carte reports that a new alliance expands the product lines for specialty linens it can now offer.
The agreement with Total Table, a large special events linen company in the Northeast, provides White Plains Linen access to a vast assortment of inventory—it can now provide more than 1,200 new patterns and designs, it says—from a warehouse covering more than 30,000 square feet.
It presents the caterers, golf courses, country clubs, catering halls, hotels, corporations, etc., that White Plains Linen services with an opportunity to set themselves apart from competitors in terms of the linens they offer.
“White Plains Linen | LINENS à la Carte is extremely excited to offer our customers such a vast and beautiful selection of special-event linens,” says Mike Ritter, White Plains Linen general manager. “Our partnership with Total Table will help to enhance and strengthen the service we can provide.”
White Plains Linen President Bruce Botchman called the new venture “an arrangement that is conducive for all parties involved.”
“With this partnership, White Plains Linen and Total Table can now provide customers with the perfect blend of everyday, functional linens, as well as fanciful linens needed for special occasions,” says Ann Davis, president of Total Table.
Crothall Laundry Services acquires Mayflower Textiles plant
WAYNE, Pa. — Crothall Laundry Services, an operating division of Crothall Healthcare, reports it has acquired the Belcamp, Md., plant of Mayflower Textile Services, a provider of healthcare and hospitality linen services operating in the Mid-Atlantic region. The transaction was finalized in late December.
“We are excited to add this fine provider to our portfolio of laundry and linen services,” says Crothall Healthcare President Steve Carpenter. “Mayflower adds significant value
with the reputation it has earned serving some very prestigious healthcare facilities. It will also provide another opportunity for savings to Crothall’s many customers in the Mid-Atlantic region.”
Mayflower has been operating for eight years under President and CEO Mukul Mehta. The 120 employees at its Belcamp plant provide textile services for customers across Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Green Seal publishes new certification standard for sustainable laundry products
WASHINGTON — The Green Seal™ environmental certification organization has published GS-51, a new standard designed to address the life cycle impacts of laundry care products for institutional and industrial settings.
Traditional laundry products are “significant contributors to water pollution, and manufacturers and users risk exposure to harmful chemicals through inhalation and skin contact when using many of these products,” Green Seal says.
GS-51 seeks to minimize or eliminate the use of many “hazardous ingredients” found in these products, plus provides an important benchmark regarding product concentration.
“Research has shown that the environmental impact of these products can be reduced by concentrating the product, thereby minimizing its volume,” says Dr. Arthur Weissman, president/CEO of Green Seal.
Concentrated products use less packaging material and contain less water, he adds. This equates to fewer pallets and trucks needed for transport and less space needed for storage.
The new standard also focuses on product performance; a framework for testing was developed in cooperation with the laundry care industry, according to Green Seal.
Roughly 80% of these products’ environmental impact occurs during usage, so the standard requires labels to recommend using the proper amount and washing full loads at the lowest possible temperature.
GS-51 covers more than 20 categories of products for
conventional laundry and dry cleaning, including detergents, pre-wash products, and spot removers; additives such as alkali boosters; and fabric care products such as anti-static treatment, starches, and fabric softeners.
The new standard offers manufacturers a way to recognize industry leaders, and gives purchasers a way to identify safer, more environmentally preferable institutional laundry products, Green Seal says.
The standard, certification tools, application information and more are available for free download on the Green Seal website, greenseal.org

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. — General Linen Service Co. has opened its latest service center, located at 25 Thurber Blvd., Smithfield RI 03297. The company has created 10 new jobs initially, with plans to double that this year.
“To better serve the needs of our customers in south/ central Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, we are pleased to announce the opening of our fourth service center,” says Chris DeSaulnier, vice president and chief operating office. “With the loyalty and support of our customers, we have continued to grow and expand, and this expansion will allow us to provide increased service coverage and support for our southern New England customer base.”
General Linen Service Co. currently serves more than 3,900 hospitality and healthcare customers in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut from its four New England locations. The annual list ranks Chicago’s fastest-growing companies based on growth in the last five years.
ARCO/Murray was ranked No. 18 with $63.1 million in revenue for 2011 and 416% growth in the last five years.
The company attributes this growth to concentrating on specialized industries, such as the laundry industry, beyond the expertise of competitors within the commercial construction marketplace.
“Crain’s is a well-known and respected business journal in Chicago and throughout the nation. ARCO/Murray is thrilled to be honored and featured by Crain’s as one of the fastest-growing companies in the Chicagoland area,” says Elliot Mata, principal at ARCO/Murray. “Our associates’ dedication to customer service and knowledge of the laundry industry has enabled us to create ‘Raving Fan’ customers that have allowed us to grow exponentially.”
Romeo elected HLAC president for 2013
FRANKFORT, Ill. — Rocco Romeo, CEO of HLS Linen Services, Ottawa, Ont., was elected president of the Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council (HLAC) during the organization’s recent 2013 elections.
Other officers for the year are Chuck Rosmiller, Crothall Laundry Services, vice president; Robert Potack, Unitex Textile Rental Services, secretary/ treasurer; Nancy Bjerke, BSN, RN, MPH, CIC, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), immediate past president; and Bradley J. Bushman, Standard Textile Co., director-at-large.
Myles Noel, COMTEX, and Neil Pascoe, RN, BSN, CIC, Texas Department of State Health Services, were elected to the HLAC Board of Directors for the first time. They join the following directors who are continuing their terms into 2013: Gregory Gicewicz, Sterile Surgical Systems; Sandra J. Hensley, RN, MSEM, BSN, CIC, University of Toledo Medical Center; Rick Kislia, Crescent Laundry; and John Scherberger, CHESP, Healthcare Risk Mitigation Inc.
“HLAC made significant progress in many different areas this past year,” says Romeo. “Thanks to a strong, dynamic board and leadership team, HLAC continued to grow, ensuring its presence as the premier accrediting body in the healthcare laundry industry.”
The new HLAC Standards (including the introduction of Part III, Surgical Pack Assembly Room
Standards for the Operating Room), were successfully implemented, the organization reports.
There are more than 170 accredited HLAC laundries in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Israel, and the organization plans to pursue additional opportunities in other countries.
“Laundries seeking accreditation do so voluntarily and demonstrate their commitment to healthcare customers and patients by promoting a culture of excellence and continuous process improvement,” Romeo says.
Dickies grows key segments, expands into Canada
FORT WORTH, Texas — The occupational wear division of Dickies is expanding its product offerings and geographical availability so that it can more fully and efficiently serve a growing customer base, the company reports.
Dickies now offers customers in the foodservice, hospitality and healthcare industries “head-totoe” uniform options, including juniors sizing and footwear, as
well as a full range of men’s and women’s uniform apparel needs.
In addition to servicing customers across the United States, the division now also provides workwear uniform solutions for customers across Canada.
“We’re pleased with the progress we’ve made in the last two years to provide our customers with deeper inventories, faster turnaround times and same-day service on Dickies’ core industrial product line,” says Alex Smith, senior vice president of occupational wear at Dickies.
Dickies also plans to expand its healthcare presence later this year. The company services healthcare workers with uniforms and is now preparing to launch a full line of industrial laundry medical scrubs.
“Dickies has a strong retail presence in the scrub category,” Smith says. “We are excited to leverage that brand strength to offer an industrial laundry-friendly scrub line that will allow our customers to grow their healthcare business.”
