Alsco pays employees to get COVID-19 vaccine

SALT LAKE CITY — Alsco Uniforms reports that it is giving its hourly employees paid time off to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The company is not requiring employees to be vaccinated, but says it is strongly encouraging every employee to receive the vaccine.

“In addition to our belief that the vaccine is an important tool in slowing the spread of COVID19, we remain committed to other prudent measures that limit the spread of COVID-19, including daily disinfecting of delivery trucks, wearing face coverings, practicing social distancing and encouraging good hygiene practices,” says John Jaggi, Alsco’s director of HR & Administration.

“We are also proud to be considered an essential service and appreciate the key role we play in providing PPE and hospital-grade clean uniforms to healthcare workers, first responders and other essential service workers.”

Alsco says that promoting the vaccine with compensation will not only keep its employees healthy but also keep customers and their guests healthy ALN

Bumpy ride ahead for hospitality laundry

LAS VEGAS — The devastating effects of COVID-19 on the airline, hotel and restaurant industries have been all over the media, but the virus has also wreaked havoc on the businesses that service and support these industries.

PureStar, a provider of outsourced laundry and linen services to the hospitality industry with over 1,000 hospitality partners across 31 facilities in North America, is one of these businesses.

The business was processing volume for more than 200,000 rooms a day before COVID-19 hit, and in the few weeks after many states shut down non-essential business, hotels, casinos, and restaurants, our monthly volume plummeted to just over 7,000 rooms.

Like many businesses, though, our priority was and still is the safety of our employees and customers. Our vice president of Environmental, Health and Safety, Mike Altendorf, was very busy during March and April securing masks, gloves and protective

eyewear, increasing our cleaning and sanitizing efforts in our facilities and delivery trucks, and working with our engineers to create plastic barriers between employees on productions lines and in employee breakrooms.

Work Area Tracking Reports were created to track employee proximity to understand

and notify any employee that worked in close proximity with someone infected with COVID-19.

We also educated our hotel partners on our laundry cleaning processes, explaining how

Future vision: Increasing

CHICAGO — Most laundry and linen services are constantly searching for ways to increase production, to get more pounds per operator hour, while maintaining quality, and ensuring goods that are needed are done on time.

Jon Witschy, sales manager for Spindle, a technology company that builds infrastructure for industrial operations to measure and improve productivity, talked about increasing laundry production with predictive technology at the Association for Linen Management’s (ALM) IMPACT conference in November during the session, “Alexa: How Can I Increase Production?”

Predictive technology is the use of tools, such as software tools

Your Views Survey:

Laundry managers say cleanliness changes likely to remain

CHICAGO — The coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people live, how the world operates.

Of course, laundry and linen services, which are essential to daily life, have had to make changes. Most laundry managers say their operations have made changes—and expect some of those change to become “normal,” according to the most recent American Laundry News Your Views survey

Nearly 80% of laundry managers who took the survey say their operation made changes.

More than 20% indicate their facility made no changes, which isn’t surprising because before the pandemic hit, almost 60% of respondents indicate their laundries paid “a lot” of attention to facility cleanliness and disinfection.

About 32% say they paid “some” attention to it, while only close to 9% say their facility paid “a little” attention to cleanliness and disinfection.

“We have always been crazy on having a clean facility,” a respondent writes, “and this has not changed as we feel that you cannot send out clean items with a dirty facility, so this is how we operate.”

As would be expected, overwhelmingly (85%), those who took the survey indicate that attention to cleanliness and disinfection increased because of COVID-19. Nearly 12% say there was no increase, and 3% didn’t know if their operation increased attention.

Some of the changes managers indicate their facilities made include:

• Twice daily employee temperature checks and workplace distancing with masks.

• Added another step by utilizing electrostatic spraying as a daily routine.

• Disinfecting touch surfaces routinely throughout the day. Making hand sanitizer readily available. Educating, re-educating workforce ongoingly.

• Increased disinfection practices with documentation.

• Daily cleaning and disinfection of laundry and its environment, including floors, walls, machines, equipment, trolleys, furniture and containers.

• We now disinfect with Decon 7 fogging and adding it to the laundry wash line.

• Raised all wash temperatures.

• Adjusted break schedules for social separation. Added one janitor to disinfect all high-traffic areas and all contact surfaces. Added vinyl curtains on the small piece feeders. Temperature (self-check) checks at start and end of shifts. Face masks mandatory for all, including visitors.

• Disinfectant stations all machines sanitized end of shift.

• More cleaning supplies; increased dedicated staff just to clean. When asked, “if your laundry made cleaning changes, do you think they will become permanent,” nearly 72% responded yes. Almost 16% of laundry managers taking the survey don’t expect the changes to be permanent while close to 13% didn’t know.

Some of the changes survey takers expect to remain are:

• Bathroom, time clock and break area daily disinfecting.

• Employee protocols to use sanitizer.

• Electrostatic spraying.

• Routine touchpoint sanitizing will continue.

• Sanitizer spray down of entire facility three times a week.

• The extra PPE and more frequent cleaning.

• Our facility now uses a gun to spray Oxivir on all COVID rooms. Makes areas very sanitary. I believe this will be kept even after COVID.

• Wiping down equipment and high-touch areas.

• Everything will stay in place.

When asked, “overall, what is your main concern when it comes to the cleanliness of your facility,” nearly half of respondents indicate the health and safety of their employees is their focus. The next most important concern (17.7%) is assuring that goods stay clean, followed by customer health and safety (11.8%).

Only around 6% of managers who took the survey say that maintaining equipment is a key concern with facility cleanliness, and no one answered “following regulations.”

While the Your Views survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific. Due to rounding, percentages may not add up to 100%.

Subscribers to American Laundry News e-mails are invited to take the industry survey anonymously online each quarter. All managers and administrators of institutional/OPL, cooperative, commercial and industrial laundries are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and identify industry trends. Milnor has a better solution through dilution.

When Milnor introduced PulseFlow® technology, CBW® washing was thrust into the future. The idea of balancing time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry was missing one critical piece of the pie – DILUTION through the efficient use of water.

PulseFlow combines the innovative RecircONE® fast wet down and chemical immersion in the first module with standing bath washing in every spacious process module. Thorough and efficient dilution occurs by way of intermittent high velocity counterflow rinsing and traditional True Top Transfer.

The result is hygienically clean linen using less water (as low as 0.3 gallons per pound/2.5 liters per kilogram) and less energy as proven time and again by hundreds of PulseFlow tunnels in a variety of laundry applications worldwide.

Comfort in simple things

After the past year, I figure many of us are finding comfort in the simple things in life.

We’re also longing for a little normality.

Hopefully, you’ll feel a bit more normal going through this issue of American Laundry News. Why? Because it features our 2021 Buyer’s Guide.

As in year’s past, inside you’ll find information (as up-to-date as possible) on companies and the products and services they provide that you need to be as successful as possible in the textile care industry.

“But,” you may be saying, “you started by mentioning the simple things. What about that?”

Besides being as comprehensive as possible, our annual Buyer’s Guide is easy-to-use as well. Simply start by locating the product or service that you’re in the market for in our Product/Service Directory

starting on page 8.

It lists companies that manufacture or exclusively distribute the products and services you need for your laundry operation.

Once you’ve found the preferred company, or companies, you’d like to check out, simply flip to the Company Directory beginning on page 18 to find pertinent contact

information: mailing address, phone numbers, website address and e-mail address.

Since this is an annual guide, I’d suggest putting this issue somewhere so that you’ll have easy access to it throughout the year as you need to buy the equipment and materials you need.

But, I know that sometimes you won’t have the issue at hand when you need it. No worries. Our online version is available 24/7 at www. americanlaundrynews.com; place your cursor over the “Resources” tab and then “Buyer’s Guide.”

Besides the Buyer’s Guide, I hope some of the articles and usual departments inside help you feel a bit more normal (and even inspire you to reach higher).

Whether it’s industry information or products and services, we try to help everybody get what they need to keep it clean. ALN

Lost in the laundry

Occasionally, important personal items from guests or patients get mixed in with the textile products and accidentally sent to the laundry. Over my 44 years of experience in the industry, I was personally involved in several of the most interesting situations.

The first was the discovery of a very large sum of money, more than $2,000, that came to the laundry in a pillowcase. An elderly patient, who had no relatives and did not trust anyone with her money, had brought it with her to the hospital and placed it in her pillowcase for safekeeping.

When the nurse changed the linen, she failed to notice the money in the pillowcase. The patient was out of the room for a diagnostic test. The loss of the money went unnoticed for several days until the lady attempted to recover it and found that it was gone.

In a last-ditch effort to find the money, they called the off-site contract laundry to see if by chance we had found any large sums of money in the laundry.

It just so happened that a dedicated employee feeding pillowcases into an ironer had found the money the day before and had promptly turned it over to her supervisor. Normal practice was to keep small bills or change found in the laundry but because of the size of the find, she thought it might be a person’s life savings and wanted to make sure they got it back.

Much to the surprise of the hospital administration, we confirmed we had found money in the laundry and asked for the approximate amount that was lost. The amount matched what they were looking for and we delivered the sum to their security department staff so it could be returned to the patient.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. — Medico Healthcare Linen has been providing the rental, cleaning and delivery of garments and linens to healthcare services for more than 85 years in Southern California.

With the outbreak of COVID19, Positek RFID reports that Medico turned to the company to develop an RFID (radio-frequency identification) solution that would allow for a safe and reliable process to ensure the clean, consistent delivery of reusable isolation gowns.

“At Medico Healthcare Linen, we pride ourselves on quickly and efficiently delivering the options that our customers

need,” says Greg Shames, director of Operations for Medico Healthcare Linen.

“With Positek RFID’s cuttingedge hardware and software, we were able to easily integrate an innovative solution at our facilities so that we could meet our customers’ rapidly increasing demand for reusable isolation gowns during a global pandemic.”

Positek says it integrated its CA Suite and Sort Software solution, as well as existing Positek RFID hardware solutions installed at Medico’s facilities, to deploy an RFID-enabled process for scrubs and lab coats driven by Fujitsu’s RFID tags, allowing Medico to

easily control the quality of the laundry process and make reusable isolation gowns a viable option for healthcare providers.

“Positek RFID and Medico continue to deliver solutions to textile-related challenges that healthcare service providers face,” said Jeffrey Markman, president of Positek RFID.

We got a very nice letter from the hospital administrator thanking us for our help. He said he knew we provided excellent textiles for his patients but was unaware that we also laundered money. The patient insisted on giving the employee who found the money a reward of $200.

In another case, I had a young surgical resident call me and said he left his wedding ring in the pocket of his scrubs earlier that day and was afraid to go home to the wife without it. I explained that the soiled linen from that hospital had just arrived and we would be sorting the linen within the hour. He asked me to wait until he could arrive because he personally wanted to go through the pockets of the scrubs to find the ring.

Since it was a major teaching hospital, I warned him that could be between 200 to 350 sets of scrubs. He said you do not know my wife; whatever it takes to find the ring I will do. We complied with his request, and he worked with the soil sort crew for about 40 minutes until he found his ring. The look on his face after he had recovered the ring was priceless.

ALN

“We are extremely excited that our patented RFID technology and innovative inventory management processes allow Medico to maximize efficiency, thus making reusable isolation gowns a viable option for healthcare facilities at a time when it is necessary.”

Of course, all items accidentally sent to the laundry are not always of value. I remember an incident at a small suburban hospital where my assistant manager found a bag containing the placenta from a childbirth.

Not being sure how to handle the item at the time he carefully put the bag in a box and returned it to the delivery department. He was very upset and confronted the head of the department showing her what her staff had accidentally sent to the laundry. He was filled with righteous indignation and was looking to make a scene.

The head nurse looked in the bag and then said, “You know it is not one bit cleaner than when we sent it to you.” That simple statement defused the situation and he simply walked off shaking his head.

As we all know, many items that go missing are never found in the laundry. The laundry is a good place to suggest where a lost item may have gone. I once spent a number of days looking for a first edition book signed by the author which came out of one of the VIP patient rooms. The book was eventually found in the patient’s room when they were packing up to go home.

The key is training your staff to be alert to missing items in the laundry and helping them be sensitive to the feelings of those that have misplaced or lost items that are dear to them. ALN

our chemistry and heat from high water and dryer temperatures are effective at killing most bacteria and viruses. I am proud of how quickly everyone jumped in and created innovative solutions and processes to keep our employees and hotel partners safe.

The precipitous drop in volume in March and April forced us to adjust our operations quickly. We consolidated volume in facilities where we could, like in New England, Las Vegas, and central Florida, and all our facilities transitioned to single-shift operations.

Many of our facilities moved to operating only a few days a week simply because the volume didn’t warrant opening the plant every day, as it is expensive to open a plant, start-up the boilers and equipment and then shut it down

after only two hours. Our customer service managers did a great job communicating with our hospitality partners on revised delivery schedules.

Nonetheless, the springtime was tough for everyone, especially in Hawaii, the Bahamas, Las Vegas, Chicago, and the Northeast where nearly everything was closed.

As summer approached and states began to loosen regulations on non-essential businesses and travel, volume began to creep back up. It was evident people wanted to leave their homes as drive-to markets like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, the Ozarks and Florida began to recover.

Timeshare properties in Orlando and Las Vegas saw the most improvement with volume around 70% of pre-COVID levels. Additionally, many hotels as they re-opened wanted everything in the room cleaned, so that helped volume levels.

As summer ended and kids went back to school volume sub-

sided somewhat but held relatively steady through Thanksgiving. The spike in COVID-19 cases following Thanksgiving had an impact on nearly all our locations, and the peak crowds expected in Florida and Hawaii were just not there during Christmas and New Year’s.

The beginning of 2021 remains a struggle for the commercial laundry business. Early indications show that the first quarter of 2021 will be like volumes in December 2020; 13% of our customers have still not re-opened.

Many restaurants and bars also remain closed or are open at half capacity, keeping our food and beverage side of the business very slow. We are also experiencing lowerthan-average laundry volume per room stay as hotels are limiting daily room cleaning unless requested by guests.

Despite these difficulties, our hotel customers are becoming more optimistic, especially with the news that with most of the population is expected to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by this summer.

In a recent survey conducted by TripAdvisor, in the first week of January, nearly 70% of hotel clickers on TripAdvisor were booking domestic trips, with the summer months proving to be the most popular months for domestic vacations.

Moreover, nearly half (47%) of all respondents globally say they are planning to travel internationally in 2021, with less than a third (30%) of travelers saying they don’t expect to travel internationally at all this year.

pancy related to business travel will take longer to recover following COVID-19, and we may not see pre-COVID-19 occupancy levels until 2023 or even beyond.

With that said, there have been some positive indicators for business travel. Several big box hotel partners like Marriott and Hilton are seeing conference booking pick up in the latter half of 2021. CES®, owned by the Consumer Technology Association and host of an annual tradeshow in Las Vegas with more than 170,000 attendees, says it plans to return in January 2022.

example, have remained resilient, and we anticipate positive trends in these states.

Overall, we remain optimistic and continue to make investments to grow and improve our business. In November we acquired a new facility in Portland and now have our first footprint in the Pacific Northwest. We expect that Nashville, a new market we entered last year, will be a growth area.

-

We feel the real unknown is how much and when will business travel return. To get a sense of impact and recovery times, previous demand shocks, namely the tech bubble, 9/11, SARS, and the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) were severe, but relatively short-lived with demand returning to pre-shock levels within six to 12 months, according to CBRE Hotels Research and STR. Many experts predict hotel occu-

This announcement by CES® is great news for Las Vegas, and we are hopeful the booking of such conferences encourages other conferences and tradeshows to follow suit.

COVID-19 has also caused PureStar to evaluate its business strategy. We’ve turned our attention toward markets and locations that are anchored by leisure and outdoor activities and not so much by business travel. Florida and Texas, for

In Las Vegas, home to our corporate headquarters and our largest customer base, we invested in new finishing equipment to improve quality and in water-saving technologies in our two largest plants.

It will continue to be a bumpy ride for all businesses who support the travel and hospitality industries, but at the end of the day, we believe the steps we have taken and will continue to take will make us prosper.

As I like to remind my team, there will always be laundry to be cleaned. ALN

COVID-19 and long-term care laundry

Housekeeping/purchasing manager for Kentucky care facility shares how it is handling the pandemic

CHICAGO — Every type of laundry has been affected by the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic.

One market that several readers have asked about is long-term care facility on-premises laundry operations.

These facilities are very busy with the pandemic, working to ensure the health and safety of residents and staff, but American Laundry News was able to get a few minutes with Robin Elliott, housekeeping and purchasing man-

ager for Sayre Christian Village/ Healthcare Center in Lexington, Kentucky, to find out how they are handling the situation.

How has COVID-19 changed how you do laundry?

We are ensuring isolated linens are washed separately (as always), although the volume has increased greatly. We are also doing more personal linens as families are not doing any outside linen at this time.

What products and services are

you needing more of? Less of?

We are basically using the same products as before. The bleach usage has increased slightly.

How are you ensuring the hygienic cleanliness of goods? Ensuring goods stay clean? Ensuring staff is safe during the process?

All staff is in-serviced frequently, as procedures change daily. Infection control is very important. All staff uses proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times (including N95 masks and goggles/protective

eyewear).

Temperature and health screenings are done daily, and they are COVID tested twice a week. Finally, they are encouraged to stay home if feeling sick or showing signs that could be COVID.

How are you ensuring vendors (and residents/staff) stay safe delivering products or installing new laundry equipment?

Vendors must enter

through the front door for screens and temperature monitoring as well. They go directly to the area that needs to be serviced or a delivery.

What laundry changes do you think will remain once COVD-19 is “under control”?

I think we will be looking into more disposable items. Also, we’ll probably be making sure extra chemicals are stocked in bulk.

Performance

• Torsion Bar suspension distributes pressure evenly along each roll, assuring uniform drying and travel of flatwork through the ironer with a minimum of padding wear

• Floating Chest self-centers to the ironing roll during operation, optimizing the contact area under pressure

• Adjustable Ribbon Tensioner prevents ironer ribbon from creating uneven surfaces, lines and wet spots on sheets

Efficiency

Safety

• Dual caliper disk brake for fast stopping of the ironer drive

• Auto-stop infeed safety gate to prevent hands or items from going into chest

• Solid heat shields along the ironing box keep side frame covers temperatures cool to the touch

• Enclosed canopies prevent foreign items from getting into ironer rolls, chest, and pad

• Roll raise lockout prevents lowering rolls if air pressure has been disconnected

• Safety switches on all doors and e-stops on all four corners

and models, to monitor and analyze patterns to forecast likely future behaviors or outcomes, says Witschy.

The data comes from many sources, such as sensors or counters on laundry equipment.

“In simplest terms, we’re taking what we know, we’re running it through these analytic tools and we’re developing insights for what we what we need to do next,” he shares. “The concept is straightforward, but the tools that are needed are relatively complex because they’re kind of replacing the brainpower and the judgment and the decision-making that we have but moving it into that model.

“However, think of how much faster we could make such determinations. Think about how your PC or a calculator can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication; how much faster your computer can search through volumes of data to get information. Imagine applying that speed to the decisions that you have to make every day in order to run your business.”

Laundry technology today has often been (and can still be) “descriptive,” collecting information that describes what has happened.

“Thus far, even for systems that are collecting and presenting data in real-time, that information is still only descriptive in terms of the story of what’s happened up to this point,” says Witschy. “For example, I can determine that I processed this number of sheets thus far today either from a manual log or a counter or control system on my finishing equipment.”

The next step would be being prescriptive, which he describes as “kind of the first step in moving toward predictive.”

Prescriptive technology mines the data and uses analytic tools to be able to identify some causes and outcomes, perhaps even combining multiple sets of information to generate recommendations of how to address the current situation.

“As an example, I could find that I’ve produced enough pillowcases today to meet my daily delivery requirement, but that I’m short on sheets,” Witschy says.

“So the prescriptive tool would tell me make an adjustment, switch my ironer from small pieces to large pieces, move my team around—using the information I’ve collected up to now to tell me what I should do right now.”

Being predictive, he says is “foretelling the future” in a way. The technology puts the collected data into a model, and then the model helps an operator plan ahead.

“Continuing on my sheet example, I know that I’ll need X number of sheets tomorrow, and

the system will analyze and know the capacity and performance of the machines, what will meet that requirement, and it could even inform me that operator A is my best feeder,” he says.

“So, that’s who I want to put on that machine to get sheets out tomorrow and thus get the best performance out of my operation.”

The move to predictive technology involves the latest evolution in industry, known as either the Internet of Things (IoT) or Industry 4.0, Witschy shares.

Industry 1.0 involved initial mechanization to help speed up industry. Industry 2.0 moved into mass production and assembly lines and utilizing electrically

driven components. Industry 3.0 is where industry started to implement robotics, electronics, sensors, etc., to become better at collecting information.

“But now, finally, we’re having the ability to network disparate systems, the ability to access information remotely and even affect something that’s going on back in the facility when you are away, and then the software tools to analyze all of this information and help us make informed decisions or looking forward perhaps even makes those decisions for us,” points out Witschy.

“Imagine equipment on the floor providing more analytic tools and decision-making capabilities,

to have the equipment be able to take that next step so that there’s no operator or manager intervention to what’s going on.”

He points out that the return on investment (ROI) for predictive technology comes from bringing multiple systems together and being able to, at a glance, see exactly what’s going on in all areas of a facility, what’s being delivered to a plant, etc.

“For me it’s just the transparency of information, making it accessible, certainly putting it online,” he says. “I can access any one of my customers’ facilities and see what’s going on in their plant right now from my cell phone, as you can do with just about everything, putting it on multiple interfaces.

“Or how about just being informed of the conditions that would indicate or preclude a catastrophic failure or even just, hey, we need to step up the preventive maintenance schedule on this because we’re hitting the edge of the envelope there a little too soon.

“Certainly we still need to have experts in certain areas, but we don’t have to necessarily pull in that expert for every minor decision that takes place in the plant because we can have these software tools that are going to help us do that and point us in the right direction.”

Witschy says that predictive analytics is “where things start to get really exciting.”

“We’re really going to hit the transformational point in our industry,” he says. “This will come down to taking that information again, correcting our current actions, as well as taking steps to make sure that we don’t repeat them in the future or be ready to ask when those next instances of may occur.”

Witschy notes that the technology is still at that point where humans need to give more input back into the systems to help them continue along a “maturity model path.”

“I hope that everybody is interested, intrigued and excited about the future with prescriptive and predictive technology, as it is getting a foothold in our industry,” he concludes, “to continue to develop out there and look forward.” ALN

Tingue’s Canadian subsidiary acquires Cramer Co.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — Tingue, Brown & Co., a provider of equipment, supplies and parts to the commercial laundry industry, reports that its Canadian subsidiary, Tingue Canada, acquired Toronto-based Cramer Co., effective Jan. 15.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We’re very happy for David Cramer, who ran a terrific business starting back in 1978,” says Ty Acton, Tingue’s president. “We’re also excited for the opportunity to expand our service to Canadian laundry operators going forward.”

Tingue has had a presence in the Canadian laundry market since the 1970s as well, having first worked through a variety of distributors, before eventually recognizing that its direct sales effort was what the market demanded.

Tingue expanded on its investment in its Canadian customers when it opened an office and warehouse in Orillia, Ontario, in 2015.

“Our Canadian friends have told us for years that we need local representation and a local distribution center in order to succeed,” Acton explains.

As part of this new deal, Tingue Canada has made a longterm commitment to Cramer Co.’s Toronto-area location. Several of Cramer Co.’s key employees will join the established Tingue Canada team, led by Patrick Robertson, who joined Tingue Canada in 2013.

“Ty has done an exemplary job navigating the two parties through this international acquisition process,” says David Tingue, CEO of Tingue, Brown & Co. “We have coveted the Canadian laundry market for a long time and this acquisition is yet another example of the financial commitment we are willing to make to serve the laundry industry.”

MIP USA Inc. purchases WGS operating assets

MONTREAL — Mark Mann, vice president of MIP USA Inc., and Michael Bernstein, CEO of World’s Global Source Operating (WGS), report the companies have reached a definitive agreement whereby MIP USA Inc. has purchased the intellectual property, inventory, customer list and future supplier agreements from WGS on patient gowns, styles and prints.

Terms of deal were not disclosed.

“We have tremendously valued our corporate and personal relationships over the years with the MIP Team, and I firmly believe that with this transition your future inventory requirements in patient gowns and other products will be a benefit all customers,” shares Bernstein.

He adds that he will ensure that the transition moves in a seamless manner.

“After several years of working on other projects together, I realized just how much the culture and willingness to delight our customers is embodied in the WGS organization, so this feels like a very natural fit,” says Mann.

“Further, we believe that the combination of efforts from both entities will only further improve service levels for all customers.”

In memoriam: Don Pedder, industry veteran, ARTA past president

MISSION, Kan. — The American Reusable Textile Association (ARTA) reports that Donald A. Pedder has died from COVID-19 at the age of 77 in Danville, Connecticut.

He was a 50-year veteran of the textile services industry, no stranger to tattoos, and loved motorcycles and fast cars. In recent years, he had become dedicated to fitness, exercised daily at the gym and maintained a 100pound weight loss.

Pedder was the first laundry operator to join ARTA in 1992 and served as its president from 2004 to 2008. Under his leadership, the number of laundry operators in ARTA grew to make up 50% of the membership.

He also established ARTA’s Biennial Education Conference in 2006 and developed the organization’s sponsorship program. Pedder also supported the creation of a Canadian ARTA, or CARTA, and later oversaw the merger of ARTA and CARTA. He received ARTA’s MVP Award at the Clean 2017 Member Breakfast for past and ongoing contributions to the association.

In recent years, he and his wife, Claudine, had retired to Danville to be near family, including their daughter Monique and grandchildren.

According to Claudine, Pedder died at the end of January after a long battle with COVID-19, one that began before the holidays, included hospitalization in ICU, recovery at a rehab center and ended back at the ICU.

“The doctors wanted to put him back on the vent when he returned to the hospital for a second time, but he told them ‘No,’” says longtime friend Alan Gordan of Gurtler Industries. “I met Don 40 years ago when he was building plants for Initial USA and I was selling chemicals for Ecolab’s Textile Care Division. He was my best friend and I miss him already.”

Pedder began his career as a regional engineer for Gordon Linen Service and Aratex. He later worked for Initial as an engineer, HLS Linen Services in Chicago as president and CEO, and Reino Linen Service as COO.

In his later years, he formed Donald Pedder Consulting and

shared his expertise with many laundries, as well as Centurion Medical Products. He also enjoyed serving as an inspector for the Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council (HLAC).

In addition to ARTA, Pedder was active in other industry associations including the International Association for Healthcare Management (IAHTM) as president and the Midwest Textile Services Association as vice president.

The family plans a private service with cremation and will spread Pedder’s ashes along the ocean, as was his wish. They ask that in lieu of flowers, any donations should be made to a charity of choice in his name.

In memoriam: Pauline Gamble, former ALM director of Academic Affairs

GRAND CANE, La. — Pauline Gamble, former director of Academic Affairs for the Association for Linen Management (ALM) in the late 1990s, died Dec. 23 due to complications from COVID-19.

“Our sincere sympathies are extended to her family, colleagues and friends,” shares ALM.

Gamble earned her bachelor’s degree from Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe) and her master’s degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

When she finished college, Gamble taught school in Houma, Louisiana, until accepting a position as a mathematician with Texaco in New Orleans.

At the time, there were no female engineers in the oil and gas business, and she became one of the first women to work in that capacity.

Gamble was at her happiest in South Louisiana: Mardi Gras, LSU football, the food, the music—she always felt that the larger-than-life spirit of that region fit her larger-than-life personality.

After retirement from Texaco, Gamble taught school in Louisiana and Texas and worked in institutional laundry management in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.

If ever a place brought her as much joy as her beloved New Orleans, it was the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

She eventually returned to Louisiana, making her home in Grand Cane. Not one to sit idle, Gamble took a position teaching math at Central School, where she worked until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Bronson Gamble.

She is survived by her sister, Donna Gamble Basco (Teddy Ray); her nephew and niece, Andy Crocker and Katie Crocker Price (Jason); her great-niece and -nephews, Alexis Austin, David “Fish” Price and Jase Price; and many more family and friends.

MIAMI — H.I.G. Capital, a global alternative investment firm with $42 billion of equity capital under management, reports that one of its affiliates has completed the acquisition of Crothall Laundry Services.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Formerly a subsidiary of Compass Group plc, Crothall is a provider of outsourced laundry and linen management services to the healthcare and hospitality sectors.

Crothall, founded in 1991, provides mission-critical laundry and linen management services nationally with 29 operations that process 600 million pounds of linens annually. H.I.G. is partnering with the current management team to support the company’s continued expansion.

859-624-0177

“This is an exciting event,” says Michael Barner, Crothall’s chief executive officer. “Now, more than ever, our customers are increasingly relying on us to support their linen management and infection control needs.

“We are excited to work with H.I.G. Capital as we push ahead with our expansion plans.”
