Faultless Healthcare Linen, An ImageFIRST Company, rebrands
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. —
ImageFIRST, a provider of linen and laundry services for the healthcare industry, reports that its brand Faultless Healthcare Linen, An ImageFIRST Company, will be renamed and rebranded to ImageFIRST Healthcare Laundry Specialists, matching the corporate logo and brand.
This comes after the acquisition of Faultless Healthcare Linen in May 2019.
Faultless Healthcare Linen has locations in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, and was founded in 1896.
In 2019, the acquisition of a majority stake in Faultless was completed with the support of Calera Capital, a leading middlemarket private equity firm.
The company says that since the acquisition, various actions have been taken to ensure the business aligns fully with ImageFIRST standards and processes. All employees were retained throughout this transaction and transition period.
Existing Faultless Healthcare Linen customers will now be serviced exclusively under the ImageFIRST brand. ALN
Giving back to the community: Paris Companies
BY MATT POE, EDITOR
DUBOIS, Pa. — David Stern, CEO of Paris Companies, a uniform rental provider based here, runs the company from Florida during the winter.
During the height of the pandemic, he saw a news report on television about families in desperate need of food to survive.
“I think it hit me about all the people that have extra needs for food, and the food banks were being swamped,” he recalls. “So I called back home. I know we have a local food bank and so we called them and we gave them a nice donation.”
The folks running the food bank called Stern to thank him, mentioning that the Salvation Army also has a food bank, so he called the Salvation Army and donated to their food bank efforts.
“When I got back home, they invited me over and I saw what they do in the community,” he says. “The pandemic continued, and so I told them, ‘Hey, what we’ll do this year (2021) for you is to help you collect money’ because I think they were struggling on the bell-ringing service because people online shop more and it’s a cold time of the year.”
Stern’s idea? Try to “stimulate” people to
give by offering a matching donation.
“It was something I would have given them anyway, but this way it helped and it did work,” he shares. “You know, they got so much more than they would have got, so I’m pretty proud of that.”

Your Views Survey:
Laundry industry mostly positive about future growth
CHICAGO — After the past two years, it would be easy for the laundry industry to have a negative attitude about business.
The pandemic, inflation, labor issues and more have made staying in business, let alone growing, challenging.
However, respondents to the most recent American Laundry News Your Views survey have upbeat attitudes about the current state of their business and the future, for the most part.
When asked “How was your laundry business in revenue in 2021 compared to 2020?” 35.5% indicate “Way up in revenue.” More than 32% are “somewhat up in revenue,” and 12.9% are “the same.”
Just over 16% are “somewhat down in revenue” while just 3.2% are “way down in revenue.”
Of those respondents who took the survey, the top two factors for improved sales were an increase in customer base and increased prices (both selected by 20% of survey takers).
These were followed by offering more services or profit centers (15%), decreased competition and increased marketing (both 12.5%), and decreased costs/expenses (2.5%).
Other reasons for improved sales were:
• Demand for product increased.
• Increase in volumes from existing customers.
• Less COVID concerns.
• Loosening of COVID restrictions on indoor dining and event gatherings.
• Restaurants were allowed to open,
• Revenue is up from 2020, but still down from 2019. We’ve still yet to hit volume like 2018, and into 2019.
• We were forced to hold customers to the charges for what they had on inventory, plus all additional items previously allowed.
When asked “If your sales haven’t improved since this time last year, what do you blame it on?” answers include:
• Public panic, government restrictions, labor crisis, inflated minimum wage …
• Our decision to focus more on retention and profit than growth and new revenue.
• Both Federal and State leadership choking business and growth with needless mandates.
• Less occupancy.
• Businesses not reopening back again.
• Flat on health linens.
• Access restrictions to locations and supply issues.
• Inflation.
• We have a healthcare facility laundry. We don’t have sales but we do view our users as customers. Unfortunately, our customers have increased, not good news for the community. Harder for the facility to keep up with the demand when labor shortages seem to be the norm.
When asked what has affected laundry businesses the most over the past
two years, labor issues was the top vote-getter from 34.4% of respondents followed by pandemic health policies (28.1%). Supply-chain issues came in third with 18.8%
Only 9.4% of survey takers indicate that inflation has affected their business. Survey takers provided the following answers when asked about the best thing that happened to their business in 2021:
• Businesses started opening back up and began doubling orders in efforts to keep customers safe.
• New leadership.
• We stayed open for the whole year and none of my employees were sick.
• We were able to take on new business before the labor crisis hit. Hope we can maintain it.
• Employee Retention Tax Credit.
• Forced us to focus our business activities in the areas which were most profitable. Also re-evaluated the many SKUs (colors and sizes) of event linens and reduced them dramatically based on performance over the past five years.
• We invited priced-based and/or unprofitable business to find another service.
• Continuous growth.
• Most of the employees caught COVID at some point so now a good portion of our workforce has immunity.
• Increase in group business.
• Competition closing.
• The training we were able to do in 2020 aided us in growing our business in 2021. We did not lay anyone off in 2019 or 2020; we intensified our training efforts to prepare for when the economy and sanity came back to our governments.
• Unexpected increased revenues.
• Utilizing all the offered help between the ERTC, EIDL and state grants.
• Learned quickly to adapt to new scenarios and accommodate customers.
• Government stopped paying people to stay home. Our recruitment is finally showing some slight improvement.
• Had two huge mills team up with me.
• Streamlined operations/improved labor efficiencies. For 2022, almost 65% of respondents are confident that their business will keep improving. Just over 25.8% think it will remain the same, and just under

Milnor has a better solution through dilution.
When Milnor introduced PulseFlow® technology, CBW® washing was thrust into the future. The idea of balancing time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry was missing one critical piece of the pie – DILUTION through the efficient use of water.
PulseFlow combines the innovative RecircONE® fast wet down and chemical immersion in the first module with standing bath washing in every spacious process module. Thorough and efficient dilution occurs by way of intermittent high velocity counterflow rinsing and traditional True Top Transfer.
The result is hygienically clean linen using less water (as low as 0.3 gallons per pound/2.5 liters per kilogram) and less energy as proven time and again by hundreds of PulseFlow tunnels in a variety of laundry applications worldwide.

I almost (just a wee little bit) felt some normality while putting together this issue of American Laundry News.
If you’re a regular reader of the publication, you know that the March issue features our handy, dandy Buyer’s Guide.
The past couple of years as I assembled this guide, pandemicrelated worries about the industry were at the forefront of my mind. This year, not so much.
The task of trying to find the most up-to-date information from the companies that can provide your laundry with products and services, and then trying to keep my eyes from crossing going through spread sheets and proof pages, line by line, felt almost like it did pre-2020. I won’t say that it was delightful, but it was … normal.
However, I know that business today isn’t like it was pre-2020, and you need to get the most out of the
From The Editor’s Desk MATT POE
dollars you spend on what you need to run your business.
Hopefully, this issue will help you increase your purchasing power.
That’s why you’ll find information on companies and the products and services they provide that you need, from air vacuum units to wrapping systems/products.
The guide is easy to use. You’ll find the product or service that you’re
in the market for in our Product/ Service Directory starting on page 10.
From that listing, you’ll see all of the companies that offer what you’re in need of. Then, turn to the Company Directory beginning on page 18 to find their contact infor mation so you can further investigate the companies and their products and services.
I’d suggest putting this issue somewhere so that you’ll have easy access to it throughout the year as you need to buy the equipment and materials you need.
But, I know that sometimes you won’t have the issue at hand when you need it. It’s always available online. Just log onto www.american laundrynews.com, click “Resources” and then “Buyer’s Guide.”
In print or online, the Buyer’s Guide is just what everybody needs to keep it clean (and get the biggest bang for your buck). ALN
Hard things are worth doing!
Some of the best things I accomplished as a laundry manager were very hard. I was never happy with the so-called status quo. I had an internal belief that change never stops and what was good enough today would not be acceptable sometime in the future.
For example, when I first started in the laundry business 100% cotton sheets, pil lowcases and bath towels were the standard items in the healthcare laundry system. We used tallow-based soap in our conventional washer-extractors.
When I retired from the laundry busi ness, cotton polyester and 100% polyester items dominated the inventory, washroom chemistry had evolved into synthetic detergents, and tunnel washers and automated wash systems dominated the market.
Each change came along gradually, and some new products flashed onto the market, proved impractical and then disappeared.
Some of these changes were easy to adapt to and some required extensive rethinking of our processes and procedures.
None of it was easy but those who embraced the change and developed the procedures thrived while those who followed the herd or dragged their feet did not do as well.
I attended many educational conferences and trade shows during my 44 years of active management. I always enjoyed the educational sessions that challenged my assumptions of what was good or pos sible.
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.
— Venus Group, a global textile manufacturer and distributor of textile products, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Founded in 1972, brothers Kirit and Raj Patel started Venus by sell ing imported towels from the back of their VW Bug.
Today, Venus has a global foot print, with 600 employees world wide, a team of textile engineers and two state-of-the-art manufac turing facilities in Foothill Ranch, California, and Fort Lawn, South Carolina.
The company says it has grown
to become a respected and trusted partner to industrial laundries, hotels, healthcare providers and more.
“When we started Venus, we were embraced with a lot of love and support from this industry,” says Raj Patel, co-founder and president.
“Customers, suppliers, employ ees and well-wishers were willing to give two immigrants a chance, an opportunity to realize the American Dream. We will forever be grateful.”
Looking ahead, Venus says it plans to leverage its global and domes
tic supply chain to help customers navigate these uncertain times.
Domestic cut-and-sew auto mated manufacturing, national distribution centers and webbased ordering are just a few of the capabilities that the company is leveraging to help its customers across market sectors.
“We are deeply committed to expanding resources to better serve our customers,” says Raj Patel. “We will continue to keep a pulse on the changing market dynam ics and shift operations to deliver exceptional service, product avail ability and speed.” ALN
In follow-up discus sions with my fellow laundry managers, I often heard them say it was an interesting idea, but it would be very hard to implement. To me hard is the wrong word, we should say it would be very challenging to imple ment.
Challenging is a word that means to me with the right amount of effort and planning anything is possible.
CHANGE NEEDS TO BE EVALUATED EACH STEP ALONG THE WAY. I READILY ADMIT THAT SOME CHALLENGES WE UNDERTOOK, WHILE PROMISING, SIMPLY DID NOT WORK OUT AS PLANNED WHILE OTHER PROJECTS WERE MADE EASIER BY WHAT WE LEARNED FROM OUR FAILED EXPERIENCES.
To succeed in business as well as in life you must not be afraid to fail. If the idea is a good idea, then we simply need to use trial and error to find the best way to accomplish it.
Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb on his first or second try. It took him around 1,000 tries before he succeeded. That is the definition of a determined man to reach his goal.
Unlike Thomas Edison the inventor, we have a large group of people who can help us succeed. We have our supervisory staff, our line employees, the managers, and departments we serve and our allied trade partners.
All these elements need to get started is a determined laundry manager willing to lead the way and implement a change process.
Change needs to be evaluated each step along the way. I readily admit that some challenges we undertook, while promising, simply did not work out as planned while other projects were made easier by what we learned from our failed experiences.
The collaborative effort across department lines and disciplines created lines of communication that presented many benefits regardless of the success or failure of the project.
As laundry managers we need to grow, reach beyond our comfort zones and do more than simply manage the day-to-day process of processing soiled textile products into clean, safe products to be used by our end customers.

donations aren’t isolated incidents. Rather, they are examples of the operation’s long history of philan thropic endeavors.
GIVING HEART
Stern shares that for most of his life, he’s been commited to his community.
“Many of the (philanthropic efforts) are with community in mind,” he says. “I was born and raised in this little area. I was schooled in Pittsburgh and came back to this small area, and I just feel like it’s part of a leader’s responsibility.”
The company has been active for years, contributing to more than 30 different charitable orga nizations every year.
“Paris philanthropic efforts are part of the Paris culture,” Stern says. “We call it ‘Paris Pride.’
“We believe that our com munity is one of the stakehold ers of our company and its part of our philosophy, written and displayed throughout the plant: Community—We believe it is our duty as a member of the community to contribute our fair share through donation and/or volunteering to improve the conditions of our less fortunate neighbors.
“I have an affinity to a couple different philanthropic things and mostly around the youth, working poor and education. Those are the kind of things that I kind of have passion for.”
People in need often touch Stern’s heart, and he is motivated to help out.
“During the pandemic, those food bank efforts touched me because I didn’t realize in our own little community how many people were in need,” he shares.
“And I’m down here in Florida and I’m watching it on the news and we had these heartbreaking stories
and I was never aware of the severe need.
“There is a women’s shel ter we contribute to that touched me. A hospital that we’re giving to is a need. Our local community is building an emotional health hospital, behavioral health hospital.
“Again, once they explained to me like how many people have the need, how many people get refused this type of care, that touched me and made me feel this is something that I believe in and, you know, will really help the community.”
He says the support often comes out of pocket or it’s given through the company. Larger efforts are made through the charitable trust Stern has set up.
“For example, we just donated to the hospital, it’s going to have our name on it that we’re a major contributor, that was done through the charitable trust,” he says.
“Quite frankly, the main reason I think, as a leader, I think it’s your kind of your duty to give back.”
“I’ve worked with Dave for almost 28 years now, and we have always been exceedingly involved in the community,” says Manda Shaw, executive assistant.
“We had a Paris little league team, from the small things like that, and there’s got to be a dozen differ ent community activities that we’re involved with on a regular basis, in addition to the different groups.”
She says that being in rural Pennsylvania, the community is very close.
“We have something called Community Days here and liter ally 10,000 people come into our area just for this day and a half with that, so we’ve always been a major sponsor of those all these different community-type celebra tions and the people, in addition to the philanthropic things with it,” Shaw says.
“There are needs to be met through Haven House, the wom
en’s shelter, full of those types of things.”
SHARING THE SUCCESS
Paris Companies’ ability to donate to various causes in the DuBois community comes from its hard work in the industrial market in Pennsylvania and New York.
The company works 14-hour days, five days a week, processing 17 million pounds of textiles and mats per year out of the DuBois facility.
The plant setup includes eight washer-extractors with two auto mated shuttles, a steam tunnel, a semi-automated garment sorting system, RFID garment and mat verification equipment, and towel baggers.
“Paris ensures timeliness and quality through its technology,” Stern says. “Using RFID allows Paris to verify all deliveries are complete and accurate. Customers can access their account and man age their products and deliveries online.”
Also, the company is HACCP Certified and Clean Green Certified.
“Paris Companies has many things that make it unique in the uniform services industry; how ever, having the CEO be the same person as the founder is unique these days,” shares Stern.
closing due to economic climate.
10% are worried about decline.
When asked why the survey tak ers responded as they when asked about 2022, a manager worried about decline wrote, “Inflated con sumables, minimum wages and being competitive. Might not be able to afford to stay open.”
Comments from those who expect their business to stay the same include:
• Wages are increasing for my customers, so it should be good.
• We’ve offset some of the costs with much higher prices and expect new busi ness to offset customers
• The training and work we did with our sales force and personnel is showing the dividends we expected ... and we expect that to con tinue.
• I don’t see COVID-19 or its variants going away. I think we are going to have to learn to adjust and live with it.
Finally, the reasons for respon dents to be optimistic include:
• Businesses are open and operating at mass scale due to changes in the way they operate due to the pandemic.
• New leadership and own ers.
• Additional services being offered to customers means more work for us. Labor
shortages starting to nor malize.
• I firmly believe that there will be a much closer return to “normal” than the small taste the authorities gave us in 2021.
• Renewed focus on true KPIs in all departments. Awareness and account ability factor has increased; management team is com mitted and driving the improvements. Bonuses engineered on improve ments more than growth.
• Tons of opportunity, and labor availability is improv ing.
• We have a fantastic sales team that consistently out performs itself every year. We did a total rebuild on a location that was closed for
“At one time he was the only employee, having to drive truck, wash gar ments, fix machinery, and then go out and sell and service accounts. Having this firsthand experience with practically every job in the organization is valu able as a CEO but rare.”
Paris has faced many challenges and obstacles over the years. However, Stern says the culture of the company that is outlined in its manage ment philosophy on how to treat employees, cus tomers, vendors, community and shareholders allows its team to stay focused and aligned.
For 45 years, Paris Companies grew every year until it sold its healthcare division in 2020. This was without any acquisitions, according to Stern.
“This was due to the solid lead ership team that was developed and the growth discipline that they lived,” he says.
“The company’s future is bright as it is the leading inde pendent uniform rental company in its geography. It has plans to introduce new technology and expand its footprint to continue its unprecedented growth.”
BEST-KEPT SECRET
Amazingly, while Paris Companies has grown in the laun dry industry, it has kept its philan thropic efforts quiet.
“It was like the best-kept secret for the longest time,” says Shaw. “We really never told anybody what we were doing.
“Recently, I’ve taken over mar keting and I’ve also always been involved in those philanthropic endeavors, so I just thought now’s the time. Our employees need to know how involved we are. We kept the employees in the dark as to what we’re doing here, so now is the time.
“It’s a matter of pride, pride in
your company and knowing what they’re doing and feeling good about your company.”
For many years, Stern was con cerned about being “braggado cious” about the efforts, and most of the donations were made quietly.
“But, you know, I think Manda makes a good point—the employ ees feel good that they’re contrib uting to a company that the leaders give back,” he says.
Stern is keenly aware that there’s a fine line between being boast ful and sharing in the company’s endeavors, but they have been more communicative about its philanthropic efforts.
“I didn’t think about the employee side of it for a while, but now I am,” he shares. “I think it does help brand the company as a company you might want to work for that shares in the profits.
“Paris has always had a profitsharing program with its employ ees, and I think this is just one of the other things that helps, that shares the profits with the com munity. That makes the people feel good about working for the company.”
Stern believes that many laundry operators are like Paris Companies. They engage in phil anthropic efforts, but they don’t really want to be in the spotlight.
“It’s part of being a good leader to be involved in your community, to be involved in those in need,” he says. “Almost every laundry opera tor is pretty well off, and I think the more empathetic they are to people who are in need, the better leader they’ll be and the more suc cessful they’ll be.
“They’ll get accounts because people say, ‘You know what, that’s a good company, I want to do business with them.’ They’ll get employees because they’ll say, ‘You know what, that’s a good person, that’s a good company.’
“My main spiel is leadership building trust, and I think phil anthropic efforts are part of that effort.” ALN
a few years. We provide the best service in the area and our customer base keeps growing.

• We get daily calls for new business and are focusing our sales efforts in particular areas where we know there are growth opportunities.

(Washing Systems) in Loveland, Ohio, started by redefining the wash pie to save overall operational costs for a laundry plant.
The wash pie consists of time, temperature, chemical action and mechanical action, which have to be balanced to produce the optimal quality in a laundry operation.
“The most important part of that pie, at least from our standpoint as chemical suppliers, is the chemical action part,” says Praechter. “It’s also the most complex component of the pie to find what chemicals are used in that process. The chemicals must target the classification that’s being processed, whether it’s indus trial, healthcare, food service.”
He adds that the laundry has to be aware of the soils on the tex tiles (e.g., hydrocarbon oils, veg etable oils, etc.) and the type of textiles being processed (cotton or synthetic).
“There are a lot of influencing fac tors into what goes into the chemi cal action part of the wash pie,” Praechter points out. “Obviously, we have to take into account engineer ing and maintenance and what’s going on in the plant, soil sorting and loading. Obviously, every plant is different.
“The soils are different, they load different and each one has its own specific chemical delivery mecha nism. The chemical supplier usually has their own proprietary system that they’re using to deliver those chemicals.”
So, Praechter speculates, what happens if a laundry could rely on the chemical piece of the pie more and reduce the other segments?
“We could probably impact the overall operation of the plant by doing that,” he says. “What I mean is chemical can do so much more, and we can speed up things, lower tem peratures, and decrease mechanical action and still get the same good quality.”
And when it comes to typical operational costs for a laundry, chemical is usually very small when compared to labor, textile purchases, utilities and other costs—as low as 2% of operating costs.
“But it can impact those other areas quite significantly,” shares Praechter.
First, increased chemicals can reduce the time factor, which can affect many other areas of opera tional costs.
“If time can be decreased, we can impact payroll,” he points out. “You’ll get goods out faster. You’ll have less effect on textile life as the garments and textiles aren’t in the washer as long. You have less utili ties, and you can possibly defer capi tal expenses because you increase the capacity of your plant by simply decreasing the time for processing goods.”
Lower temperatures can also affect textile life and utilities (less
gas needed for heat, less water used, etc.). Decreasing mechanical action again improves textile life and capi tal expenses since both the goods and the equipment aren’t being “beat up” as much.
“Lastly, if we can impact chemi cals from how we put them together and how they’re used,” Praechter says, “we can influence the health and safety of the plant, which obvi ously safety is a very large segment of what we do. We want to have all our employees safe.
“We also want to have the best environmental footprint that we can put out for our customers and for ourselves and for textile life. The less harsh chemicals will affect tex tile life as well.
“So obviously if we increase the chemical reaction and decrease some of these other things, we can make a significant impact on these other areas.”
Praechter says that new chemis try goals include enhanced cleaning quality and decreased formula run time decreases overall water usage. There are gas and energy savings, increased fabric life and increased environmental benefits.
“There’s actually less deliver ies of either packaged goods or bulk because there’s less chemistry involved with the entire process,” he points out. “So, we’re taking trucks off the road and also just using less chemicals, again with employee safety, less contact with very hazard ous chemicals, and we’re still gen erating hygienically clean garments and textiles.
“Chemistry can do more, and we verified very big benefits from doing this, and still remain a very small portion of the cost and influencing the total operation.”
BIOACTIVE PERFORMANCE ACTIVATORS
Doug Story, president of the large laundry division of UNX Industries in Greenville, North Carolina, then examined bioactive/enzyme perfor mance activator product develop ment.
These activators are a combina tion of living organisms and a com bination of enzymatics.
“We have enzymatics that are capable of removing everything from protein all the way over to petroleum,” says Story. “It’s just a matter of how you set the formulas up and how you wash the goods.
“So, these bioactive agents, not only are they active today and doing a good job today, but I think they’re going to be actually a big part of our future as we look down the road in terms of laundering and processing.”
He says work with these activators began in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s with enzymes that worked at high temperatures. Experiments shifted to finding solutions that worked at lower temperatures, including eliminating microbes in the process.
“Microbes actually produce the enzyme that they use to break down
the cultures with,” shares Story. “This capability in the activity of these agents has been evolving over the last 30-40 years to become very, very revolutionary and very useful today.”
He says enzymatic programs here were designed to solve the prob lem of blood, sweat, protein, grass stains, paint, etc., on the uniforms of athletes.
“We did a lot of work in those enzymatics for removing those items from those uniforms, and as we started working more and more, let’s see how we can expand it into linen supply, healthcare, hospitality, into that type of a business,” he says. “So, we started translating them over into the industries that most of us are involved in.”
So, what is an enzyme? An enzyme is a protein molecule that has a “key” on its surface. The key reacts with whatever molecule that it’s targeted to go after.
“For example, if it’s a protein enzyme, there’s a little key on the surface of that molecule called an ‘active site’ that will actually find a protein molecule, attach itself to it, and break that molecule down into smaller component parts, such as amino acids and things like that,” says Story.
The lock-and-key process uses lower pH and less heat, water and time compared to alkalis, which use more of those elements for its destructive action to break down molecules.
So, what makes using enzymes and bioactive agents in a laundry worthwhile?
First, these agents target, and are effective against, certain types of soils, and they work at a variety of temperatures.
“We have a greater functional ity now with the enzymatics and with the bio-organisms,” says Story. “They’ll work in high temperatures and they work at low temperature, so you have a broad range of func tionalities.”
Next, Story says enzymes and bioagents can have a positive waste water impact. Most of the time, a wastewater system is needed to take the soils removed from textiles and break them down into non-lethal soils. Then the water can be recov ered for further use.
“The cool thing about the
enzymes and these bio-agents is they actually are doing that in your wash wheel,” he says.
“So, if you’ve got fat soils and greases in your wash wheel, and you’ve got some of the enzymatic products that we developed over the years, they will start breaking those large molecules down in the wash wheel so that you will notice a reduction of fat and grease in your wash cycle, and you will see a reduc tion of your BODs (biochemical oxygen demand), especially if you’re linen supply plants and in food and beverage or you’re in a healthcare plant.
“You will notice that you will be using less alkalinity and things like that as well. So it does have definite impact on the wastewater.”
The agents can also remove mil dew from cotton goods without destroying the dye on the fabric.
“You won’t receive 100% recov ery, but you’ll get a high percentage, more than throwing all of them away,” he shares.
Factors that operators need to be cautious about when using these agents include the fact that they have targeted functions.
“If you have a protease enzyme, that means it goes after proteins and destroys proteins,” Story says. “The problem is if you take that same molecule, put it in a washer that has oils and greases and starches in it, that enzyme will not do a thing against that type of soil. It will only attack.
“It’s only specific to the type of soil, the proteins that it’s going after, so it will have difficulty in that regard. So in most cases, what everybody does and what we do is we actually mix a good blend of enzymes that do that work across the broad spectrum.”
While these agents are effective in various temperatures, they are sen sitive to the environment in which they live, he says.
“For example, if you take a lowtemperature enzyme and put it in temperatures that are way too hot for it, and if you take a low-tempera ture microbe and put it in tempera tures that are way too hot for it, you will kill the microbes and you will deactivate the enzyme so it will not work,” Story points out.
“So, you have to be very cogni zant of what the operating condi
tions are. It’s not a plug-and-play product. You’re going to have to make sure that the individuals that work with you and the technical service reps are well trained and know exactly what they’re doing in terms of writing the programs and formulas that are necessary to use these products.”
A key point to consider is that while enzymes can break the soils down, they will not remove the soil.
“They just break it down off the surface of the fabric,” says Story. “You’re still going to have to use surfactants and detergents as part of that component in order to remove those soils.”
Finally, enzyme products can be more expensive on a gallon-to-gal lon basis versus traditional prod ucts.
“But the cool thing about them is the time savings that you have and the water savings and the fact that you can actually get longevity of your fabrics and you reduce your fabric damage because you’re not having used the alkalinity that you normally have to use,” Story points out.
“With each wash formula, when you’re utilizing these bio-active components or utilizing these enzy matic components, you’re going to have to be very cognizant of the fact that your formulas have to work well, and there are some plants where this will not be applicable,” he says.
“Your plant has to have good programmable washers. You have to have mechanically sound washers. They have to work right with the programmability and the mechani cal action with them and make sure that maintenance and preventa tive maintenance on them is done so you can utilize these programs. These programs will then yield you some very, very high-quality work at some very efficient numbers.”
And with today’s labor challeng es, he says laundries will have more automation, and the chemistry pro grams and wash formulas used will have to be adaptive to that same kind of environment.
“These bioactive and enzymatictype products in conjunction with the formulas that are programmed into the system will, in fact, yield that kind of result,” Story concludes.
HOLISTIC, FLEXIBILE MANAGEMENT
Angela Becker, marketing direc tor for the Textile Care Division at Ecolab, based in St. Paul, Minnesota, then discussed trends in the indus try, what’s driving the changes and the chemical technologies and solu tions moving forward.
One of the major changes in the world today she notes is water scar city.
“By 2030, demand for clean water will surpass supply by over 40%, really a scary statistic,” says Becker. “It’s going to be very scary for us as we think about the world and what

www.AmericanLaundryNews.com AMERICAN LAUNDRY NEWS | MARCH 2022 15 ➢ Page 16 @AmericanLaundryNews facebook/americanlaundrynews FOLLOW US on Facebook & Twitter Share Our Content Tell Us What’s on Your Mind www.americanlaundrynews.com BY MATT POE, EDITOR HENDERSON, Ky. — Jan. 1, 1961, an important date for the Sights family. That’s the day they founded Industrial Uniform Services here. The family set out with no business, a shal- low line of credit, some very used laundry equipment and one delivery truck to establish a customer in uniform rental service within a 25-five-mile radius of its plant. “With small but aggressive sales force and commitment to providing its cus- tomers with exceptional service, we grew to five routes and expanded our territory to 75-mile radius within five years,” says Wes Sights, president and CEO, part of the third generation of the family involved with the business. Expansion continued as the uniform ser- vice steadily acquired volume and services 2022 The Newspaper of Record Laundry Linen Management www.americanlaundrynews.com INSIDE 4] COMPILED BY MATT POE, EDITOR CHICAGO — Without doubt, COVID-19 was major disrupter in the laundry and linen services industry. From lockdowns to supply-chain and labor issues, what was nor- mal before 2020 isn’t normal anymore. So, how can laundry operation operate what could be described as “new abnormal?” American Laundry News posed this question to the industry, and what follows are the responses from five laundry leaders around the country. 12 Panel of Experts Get to know our new panelists as they intro- duce themselves, their operations and more. Columnist at Large In this issue, Eric Frederick shares about the need for good peo- ple management skills. Volume Number 14] See SITEX on Page 6 Several laundry representatives share how they see the industry ‘flexing’ to maintain business and quality Laundry operations in ‘new abnormal’ Late News Texcare International to return in 2024 FRANKFURT, Germany — Trade fair organizer Messe Frankfurt reports that the next Texcare International will take place here Nov. 9-13, 2024. Due to the COVID-19 pan- demic, the trade fair, held every four years, had to be suspended in 2020/2021. Messe Frankfurt and its partners, VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies, and the German Textile Cleaning Association, jointly agreed on the new date. “There were two decisive reasons for choosing the new date,” says Johannes Schmid-Wiedersheim, director of Texcare International. “On the one hand, it fits very well into international trade fair calendar. On the other hand, was favored by exhibitors and visitors because it is during the low season for the tourism industry when most investments made. “We are already looking forward to the next Texcare International, real business encounters and presentations in 2024, and are work- ing with full energy toward the suc- cess of the event.” In the United States, preparations are already in full swing for the Clean Show from July 30-Aug. 2, 2022. we need to do to affect our water supply.”
Energy is another focus today, she says. Energy increases are being felt in operations at commercial laun dries.
Then, there is the challenge of finding enough labor.
“Many of us are posting very sim ilar signs in our windows that we’re hiring,” points out Becker. “We need labor, and we’re talking about it in our trade industry meetings as well because labor is so critical for us.”
Of course, COVID-19 is causing global changes.
“It’s definitely top of mind for any of us,” she says. “It’s an area that is really causing acceleration and awareness. It’s causing some of the inflationary measures.”
All of these factors and more, like supply-chain and delivery issues, are changing and affecting the demands on commercial laundry businesses, flexing and changing the way they are operating.
“We understand that the solu tions need to be holistic and flexible because your markets are changing because the way that you’re doing your business is changing. We know that the solutions have to be flex ible,” Becker says.
“You need flexibility with your wash programs, your chemistry. From a wash-process perspective, what’s driving a lot of the changes in wash chemistry and wash programs is driven by what’s happening in the world.
“Really looking for ways for us to reduce overall spend, reduce water consumption, reduce energy spend, really drive that lowest total opera tional cost—and to deliver the qual ity and customer results that you are expecting so that you can deliver that satisfaction to your customers as well.”
Integrating chemistry and wash processes with additional solutions (e.g., water, energy, wastewater) is vital to managing an operation, she says, along with being flexible and applicable across the board on the equipment. It can also help reduce costs.
Examples of this include looking for efficiencies in an operation for faster run times, water and energy solutions for equipment that can help save water, and reclaiming heat.
“If you can really help control and manage through the chemical programs and the wash programs that you’re utilizing can help you, overall, really manage that total operational costs in your operation,” Becker says.
Also, dosing technology can help manage chemical dosing, expendi ture and safety. And laundry man agement systems give laundries the ability to see the operation, to understand what those operational efficiencies are.
“So, for example, understanding the chemical dosing, that it’s hap
pening each and every time so you can deliver customer satisfaction,” she says.
“If you put in this really great wash program that’s saving you time, temperature and water, it’s important to understand that if you have a leaky valve over on the other side that you can see what’s going on so you can fix that and you can gain all of the efficiencies in your process.
“So all of these pieces together are so important and interwoven as you’re thinking about how to man age your entire plant operation.”
Flexible wash programs are inte gral in terms of how an operator looks at his or her overall operation, shares Becker, including chemical solutions in three areas: surfactant technology, enzyme technology and peracid technology.
“The flexibility with either using surfactants, enzymes or peracids, using all three or combination of those, are important as you’re look ing for that total savings and opera tional savings,” she says.
Surfactant technology offers tar geted soil removal and suspension of those soils.
“We can make surfactants so tar geted to very specific soil removal, we can make sure that we are apply ing the right technology to write chemistry in the wash wheel to find those efficiencies that you are look ing for in your operation,” she says.
“For example, looking for a prod uct that actually removes the sticky adhesives from medical tapes and EKG pads. Being able to remove those difficult oils on healthcare lin ens through surfactant technology directly in the wash wheel will help you through those efficiencies and will help you gain a total cost savings as you’re using the right surfactant technology.”
The right surfactant technology with the right textiles and machines can drive key factors: lower temper atures, lower water consumption, reduce formula run time, extended linen life, good biodegradability and sustainability.
As noted earlier, enzymes are natural catalysts targeted to very specific soils.
“What we can see, too, is the application across a number of dif ferent soils,” shares Becker. “Whether it be food soils in food and beverage processing, whether it be healthcare bodily fluids that you’re trying to look for removal, enzyme technol ogy can help drive that soil removal while also focusing on that total savings.”
She says with enzyme technolo gies, laundries can do lower-tem perature processing, use less water, create time savings and efficiency, extend textile life, and have great benefits from a sustainability stand point.
Peracid technology, and oxida tion chemistry, can help deliver overall brightness and microbial control, Becker shares.
“You can utilize peracids in a variety of ways, whether it be oxida tion, oxidizing for color safeness, driving hygiene standards,” she says.
“I think peracids can also drive a lot of those total operational sav ings: lower-temperature washing, extension of linen life because it’s less degrading to linen than chlorine bleach, and excellent sustainability and, again, flexibility.”
Finally, Becker says that while wash programs and chemistry are an important and integral part of a laundry operation, it’s a part of a holistic solution.
“You need to think about not only the chemical and wash pro gram itself but how all of these additional solutions come together,” she points out.
“Using the right surfactant and enzyme across the technologies that can come together for a total opera tional cost savings and also look ing at water and energy solutions, wastewater solutions, the right dos ing technology, the right manage ment systems to help you manage your operation so you can drive those overall savings and operations.
“That’s really what’s going to be delivering those factors that matter, really delivering the management of your cost, helping you manage that total operational spend from water and energy, finding those efficien cies, and then ultimately driving and increasing revenue as well.”
VALIDATION OF THE LAUNDRY PROCESS
Eli Cryderman, regional vice president of corporate accounts for Gurtler Industries in South Holland, Illinois, concluded the webinar with a look at the importance of validat ing of laundry processes.
“You’re saying yourself why do I need to validate my process? We’ve already got a third-party registra tion. I use EPA-registered products. I follow the current best practices,” he says. “I’m saying that’s great, but how healthy is your laundry?
“Are there other things to consider that could make you more efficient while still maintaining your health, still maintaining your hygienically clean linen? The answer is yes.”
Cryderman says that by incor
porating microbial analysis beyond the finished product and looking more at the entire process, managers can have a more in-depth under standing of the processes that are going on in the laundry and make improvements to work with formu las more efficiently, have more effec tive and judicious use of chemistry, and lower overall operating costs.
“We’ve got linen, and everybody’s probably testing linen for hygieni cally clean, but if we consider our washing equipment, we like to look at our rinse waters,” he says. “We can titrate for microbial load, but if we test, we start to have a profile. Our goods can only be as clean as the last water they’re in.”
“Understanding our microbial load in the tunnels during our wash process is key. Are we incorporat ing some sort of tunnel sanitization procedure or equipment sanitiza tion procedure, especially in older equipment? Some of the newer equipment has that built-in func tionality, but some of the older stuff doesn’t.”
Is the laundry doing preventive maintenance with an eye toward hygienically clean? Are post-wash handling systems, whether convey ors or slings, checked to see how dirty those are?
“It could be that, yes, we’re still producing hygienically clean linen, but can we do it more efficiently?”
Cryderman asks. “And we found that we definitely can.”
While laundries are looking for ways to save water, he points out that water reuse systems are a per fect breeding ground for bacteria and other microbes.
“It’s usually they’re warm, not hot enough to kill the bugs,” Cryderman says. “There’s soil and water to feed on, and sometimes it’s in hard-toreach places like under a tunnel or out of sight.
“So, we want to make sure that we’re incorporating our cleaning procedures in our monthly PMs because if we’re adding bio-organ isms back into the tunnel because our reuse systems are contaminated,
that’s just more bugs we have to kill with time, temperature, energy or chemicals.
“The healthier we can get our laundry, the easier it is, and cheaper, to achieve hygienically clean tex tiles.”
Regular sanitizing of the equip ment, incorporating a disinfection program and regular preventative maintenance, the laundry that is bet ter at those efforts has an easier time achieving hygienically clean linen and keeping it that way, he says.
“But we have to remember that the validation of that process is the key,” Cryderman points out. “Just like in Tommy Boy, the guarantee on the box doesn’t mean anything if the product doesn’t work.”
When it comes to recent supplychain issues, he says operations can reduce costs associated with tex tile replacement by incorporating a fluid-repellant product in their process.
“It’s also key to incorporate that process for your customers to verify that we’re providing you reusable barrier garments that meet the water-repellency process param eters,” shares Cryderman.
“Much like we’re testing for bugs, we do the same thing with our bar rier garments or surgical garments where we can say yes, I have a qual ity-control system in place where we’re taking samples throughout the day and testing and making sure that we’re going to be providing you with barrier garments that perform as promised.
“We don’t need to be setting up a crazy QC system where we’re testing thousands of garments a day, and we don’t want to be doing it once a quarter, but a reasonable QC pro gram in conjunction with your res toration barrier process is going to give your customer peace of mind.”
Cryderman concludes by reminding operators that it’s impor tant to validate the processes used in a plant, “The end goal being to be able to produce a hygienically clean linen to the customer as efficiently as we can.”

LAVATEC introduces certified spare parts e-commerce website
BEACON FALLS, Conn. — Laundry equipment manu facturer LAVATEC reports it has launched a new compan ion website for certified spare parts, NewChapterParts.com.
The company says the website offers an easy-to-navigate e-commerce platform that helps increase the speed and accuracy of placing an accurate parts order and provides reliable worldwide shipping for fast delivery.
“With more than 20,000 LAVATEC machines in service today, we felt it was time to give customers the ease and convenience they’re used to when ordering their favorite products on retail websites,” says Mark Thrasher, president and CEO of Lavatec Laundry Technology.
“New Chapter Parts makes it easy to search for highquality commercial spare parts and consumables for the industrial laundry market, which helps operators maintain their production uptime.”
The company says that website visitors will notice a wide variety of products available for LAVATEC equipment, including tunnel washers, dryers, washer-extractors and other water extraction presses.
The site is optimized for viewing on mobile devices and tablets as well. Simply sign up for an account to access the extensive parts inventory and a search button expedites the process with shopping cart ease.
“We are adding inventory on a weekly basis of the most commonly ordered LAVATEC certified spare parts right here in the U.S.,” says Thrasher. “There can be a huge differ ence between parts that are labeled ‘compatible’ and what is actually certified and recommended by the manufacturer.
“NewChapterParts.com offers a convenient and safe option for customers to buy LAVATEC-certified parts for use with LAVATEC machines. If you don’t see a part you need, use the contact page to let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.”
The website retains customer history for repeat and future orders. Payment options include using a credit or debit card, and customers also can sign up for a newslet ter that provides regular updates on parts availability and special deals.

“We received the donation and all we can say is WOW!” says Jenny Perez, executive director of Mary Magdalen House in Cincinnati. “As you can imagine, towels, wash cloths and shower curtains are integral to the work of Mary Magdalene House.
“In 2021, we provided nearly 17,000 showers for our guests. The donation of these items from Standard Textile Cares means Mary Magdalene House can provide the best experience to the guests who visit us every day.”
Homelessness in the United States has grown in recent years. In its most recent annual count conducted in January 2020, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported more than 580,000 people were homeless in the country. Their data shows a four-year upward trend in homelessness even before the COVID-19 crisis began.
Standard Textile says it plans to continue the Standard Textile Cares program throughout 2022.
The company’s list of partner organizations has grown to serve areas in 12 states, extending the program’s reach and ability to bring comfort to those in need.
