Recent upgrades for industrial laundry success
BY MATT POE, EDITORUpgrades are a constant in the laundry and linen services industry. Some operations need to improve quality and efficiency. Others have acquired older facilities in desperate need of upgrades.
Sometimes equipment simply wears out. Costs, labor issues, government regulations … there are many reasons for industrial laundries to update equipment and facilities. American Laundry News reached out to several laundry operators and equipment
manufacturers to find out which upgrades have been requested most recently, the reasons for the upgrades and how operations have been improved.
COMMERCIAL LAUNDRY EXAMPLES
Pamela Barnett, project manager for Crothall Laundry Services, which has 14 full-service commercial laundry plants across the United States, says that the company has made upgrades at its facilities in Columbia, South Carolina; Johnson City, Tennessee; and Phoenix.
“With state-of-the-art equipment from JENSEN and Kannegiesser ETECH, we’ve installed new tunnels, wash aisles, (Chicago Dryer Co.) Blanket Blasters and more at our facilities,” she shares. “In addition to upgrades completed on the clean side, we have taken steps to optimize the soil sort processing to ensure maximum efficiency.
“These plants now utilize the latest laundry technology to ensure precision and quality in every product processed.”
Barnett says the driving purpose behind everything Crothall does, including equipment and facility upgrades, is to remain an industry leader by providing outstanding quality, excellent customer service, and a safe and efficient workplace.
“We consistently look for ways to accomplish this by being proactive in our approach to equipment and maintenance needs,” she says.
“Managing costs effectively is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the market. We strive to become the most efficient laundry operation by reducing our costs while maintaining a high level of quality products and service to our customers.”
Overall, Barnett says the upgrades have streamlined productivity and maximized efficiency.
“New and added equipment like the
Blasters have added approximately 25% better throughput,” she shares. “Our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency has also resulted in methods that reduce water consumption and lower our carbon footprint.”
NOVO Health Services, which is headquartered in Atlanta, upgraded full plant rail control systems and both soil side and clean side processing operations in its Dubois, Pennsylvania, facility.
Martin new ARTA Board of Directors president
“We made the decision to upgrade these controls to enhance efficiency, reduce potential downtime and meet growing demands,” says Shane Ledbetter, senior vice president of operations.
“The new equipment offers advanced features such as increased throughput, higher precision, and greater reliability, enabling the facility to optimize production processes and remain competitive in the market.
“Additionally, the upgrade aligns with NOVO’s commitment to ongoing innovation and continuous quality improvement, implementing the most sophisticated and efficient equipment available to better serve our healthcare customers and keep their costs down.”
Ledbetter says that a project of this scope and magnitude had the potential to challenge the plant’s ability to maintain consistent service levels and continue to achieve 100% on-time order fulfillment given the fact that the entire material handling system had to be taken offline for these upgrades.
“As such, we methodically planned the plant’s processing capability in the days leading up to the installation to prepare product and limit service interruptions while the plant was offline,” he points out.
“While this increased the overall cost of

Laundry managers consider professional development ‘very important’
CHICAGO — Employee professional development is key in today’s business environment.
It keeps workers up to date on industry trends, technology, processes, and more—which is a plus for the business.
Professional development also benefits employees with increased job satisfaction—and employees who engage in training are more likely to stay with their current employers.
In the most recent American Laundry News Your Views survey, when asked how important professional development is for laundry employees, 100% of respondents said, “Very important.”
More than 33% of operators indicate that their employees ask about professional development opportunities “often.” Half of the survey takers say employees enquire “sometimes,” and only 16.7% indicate that their employees never ask.
What types of professional development are employees asking about?
Responses include:
• Laundry technology related.
• HR laws, safety, computer skills, finance.
• Technology and training in repairing equipment.
• Mainly about chemicals and techniques.
• Technical skills.
• Safety.
More than 80% of laundry operators who took the survey indicate that their operations offer professional development opportunities. Only 16.7% don’t offer such opportunities.
When asked “What opportunities does your laundry offer? (Check all that apply),” those operators whose laundries do offer training indicated:
• Mentoring, 14.3%
• On-site sessions, 19.0%
• Online training, 9.5%
• Classes through local institutions, 14.3%
• Off-site sessions/training, 19.0%
• Vendor training sessions, 14.3%
• Other (please describe), 4.8%
Examples from the “other” category include using www.laundryeducation.com and training on laundry optimization techniques.
When respondents whose operations don’t offer development opportunities were asked what prevents them from doing so, one survey taker writes, “The training available today is nothing like what was offered over 20 years ago.”
Further thoughts on laundry employee professional development from respondents include:
• Without education, there cannot be development.
• My development started with Milnor service schools then Huebsch
originators.
• It is extremely important to keep up with development.
• It’s a big subject to describe. In short, regular training pertains to 1) machine knowledge, 2) chemical knowledge, 3) operation standardization, 4) employee motivation, 5) laundry unit optimization for higher productivity, 6) maintenance tools and skills for lower breakdown time, and 7) textile knowledge.
• Would like help.
While the Your Views survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific. Due to rounding, percentages may not add up to 100%.
Subscribers to American Laundry News e-mails are invited to take the industry survey anonymously online each quarter. All managers and administrators of institutional/OPL, cooperative, commercial and industrial laundries are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and identify industry trends.
Milnor has a better solution through dilution.
When Milnor introduced PulseFlow® technology, CBW® washing was thrust into the future. The idea of balancing time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry was missing one critical piece of the pie – DILUTION through the efficient use of water.
PulseFlow combines the innovative RecircONE® fast wet down and chemical immersion in the first module with standing bath washing in every spacious process module. Thorough and efficient dilution occurs by way of intermittent high velocity counterflow rinsing and traditional True Top Transfer.
The result is hygienically clean linen using less water (as low as 0.3 gallons per pound/2.5 liters per kilogram) and less energy as proven time and again by hundreds of PulseFlow tunnels in a variety of laundry applications worldwide.

Nixon Medical acquires Central Florida medical business
NEW CASTLE, Del. — Nixon Medical, a service provider of medical apparel and linens based here, reports that it has acquired the medical business of A Linen Connection.
A Linen Connection, a provider of laundry services for both medical and food & beverage markets, has served customers across Central Florida for more than 40 years.
The transaction closed on Dec. 15, and the transaction terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition comes as part of Nixon Medical’s next phase of growth. In December, Nixon Medical opened its first healthcare laundry facility in Florida.
Acquisitions, such as that of A Linen Connection’s healthcare business, are expected to drive continued growth for Nixon Medical in the coming years, according to the company.
To support its ongoing M&A efforts, Nixon Medical says it promoted Ben Berstein, a family member and shareholder of Nixon Medical, to the role of vice president of corporate development.
“We look forward to continuing to serve A Linen
Connection’s medical customers through our new healthcare laundering facility in Apopka, Florida, bringing the high-quality services consistent with the Nixon Medical brand,” Berstein says.
“We are excited about our company’s next phase of growth, both organically and via acquisition. We believe in enhancing the legacy of sellers, consistent with our core values and core purpose, that differentiates Nixon Medical as an acquirer in the healthcare linen market.”
Fairmount Partners’ Managing Director Jonathan Smith says, “We are thrilled to have advised Nixon Medical in structuring and completing the acquisition of A Linen Connection’s medical business.
“Helping to shape Nixon Medical’s M&A strategy, and then executing upon it, has been a wonderful experience for our Fairmount team and we look forward to continuing (and accelerating) our partnership with Nixon Medical going forward.”
Fairmount Partners served as the M&A advisor and Cozen O’Connor served as the legal counsel to Nixon Medical on this transaction.
COLUMNISTS/FEATURES
Hiring new team members has been a matter of significant concern and frustration in the last few years, and the difficulty in connecting to the people wanting to work in our industry has become especially challenging. The pressure to fill has never been greater, and the necessity of prompt selection continues to exert an urgency to press forward with any or every candidate that does not present any disqualifying issues. Now is the time to investigate and identify green flags—the things that make a candidate stand out from the others.
Focusing on the green flag items within the pool of hirable candidates is the key that may have become seconded by the immediacy of need. Determining the green flag traits that are desired and how to spot them during the application and interview process can greatly enhance the success of the process.
Some of the easiest and best indicators include the candidate’s previous relevant experience and consistency. The candidate that presents previous achievements can also be valuable, like the identification of their previous leadership experiences. The amount of variety in previous responsibilities can indicate adaptability and resilience.
After looking at this kind of indicator on the application, the interview is the place to fill in the blanks and identify characteristics that are valuable to the company and its culture. Behavioral interviewing is frequently used in this setting and works well but is not necessarily the only or best method to divine the candidate’s aptitudes.
Whenever using the behavioral interview, an effort to present it as a conversation or discussion often helps the candidate relax and speak freely rather than trying to find the “right” answer.
Things to consider from the interview as a whole include the candidate’s attitude. Is it overall positive or is it something else? Is there any degree of enthusiasm or excitement? Is the communication from the candidate substantive and organized? How does the candidate present information and does it address the subject directly or only a portion of it?
Common behavioral interview questions include:
• Tell me about your previous work experience.
• Tell me about a difficult coworker and how did you deal with that.
• What has been your biggest challenge at work?
• Tell me about the best thing about your former job.
• Why did you decide to apply here?
• What motivates you?
• What do you like most about what you do?
• Tell me what you would like me to know about you when considering you for the job.
The completed interview record will necessitate the creation of a document to preserve both the relative scoring and the specific items being evaluated. This will need to align with both the goals of the organization and with the identified behavioral traits desired in the position to be filled.
When creating this record, be sure to include the overall feeling of the interview and a standardized scoring method for all items, like 1-10 on eight fixed and two open indicators. Simple ranking will make the decision much less subjective; empiricism will assist with that goal.
As pressure to hire and the competition for employees continues to rise, attention to retention must become the mantra of first-line leadership. Not taking an active, and proactive, role in the success of current employees will counter all efforts to secure and keep the right candidates.
Leaders who do not engage employees before a dismissal becomes a real possibility is not acceptable and must never happen. It is easy to believe from a supervisory position that the employee is the issue and not the work situation, but this viewpoint will not carry an organization forward.
Engage the employee early and uncover the issues that are contributing to the situation to provide sufficient offset to avoid a loss of job whenever possible. These actions will generate camaraderie and gratitude and the news will spread far among the team that the leadership cares about them. Now consider the retention and performance potential in that environment.

this project, it was necessary to ensure our healthcare customers felt no impact with regard to quality levels, turnaround time and patient satisfaction.”
Ledbetter shares that the upgrade has significantly bolstered reliability and service levels across the company’s operations.
“This upgrade has brought about a notable improvement in performance, minimizing downtime and enhancing overall efficiency and quality,” he says.
“With the implementation of this stateof-the-art technology, we’ve experienced fewer system failures and disruptions, leading to smoother operations and increased customer satisfaction.
“The upgraded equipment has also enabled us to deliver our services with greater speed, meeting and even surpassing the expectations of our customers.
“This enhancement not only strengthens our reliability but also underscores our commitment to providing exceptional service to our healthcare customers, their staff and their patients.”
MANUFACTURER OBSERVATIONS
Consolidations within the industrial laundry market space have become prevalent as companies strive to optimize efficiency and streamline operations, shares Cliff Quick, director of inside sales and project management for G.A. Braun Inc. in Syracuse, New York.
“Large industrial laundry processors are increasingly acquiring smaller companies’ industrial facilities, which often brings forth the need to upgrade and retool older equipment with newer technology and automation,” he points out.
“In many situations, modernizing equipment is not simply an option but a strategic necessity. Aging equipment poses several challenges such as higher maintenance costs, increased risk of downtime and lower productivity.
“Newer and more advanced systems offer features such as predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring and data analysis, providing companies the ability to proactively address issues, optimize resource allocation and maximize throughput.
“Automation helps to reduce labor dependence and ensures consistent quality.”
Quick points out that in some instances, consolidations will require facility expansion
or renovation/retooling, adding that these types of projects are the most complex given the need to maintain levels of production during project implementation activity.
In some cases, a compromise must be made between supporting existing processing requirements and the project implementation.
“At Braun, we understand these unique challenges and partner with our clients to execute equipment installation projects in the safest and most cost-efficient manner,” he shares.
“Braun’s approach to integrated project management is constantly leveraged to establish and maintain project schedules in accordance with the agreed-upon objectives and set forth by the end-user client partner.
“Braun project management has the capability to coordinate the equipment delivery and freight loading plan to coincide with the rig-out of the existing equipment and the off-loading of the new equipment. Braun’s expertise in equipment rigging is always key given many retooling activities have aggressive timelines for project execution.
“In addition to collaborating with customers to support the equipment rigging activities, Braun highly recommends that
an experienced third-party MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) contractor be involved in executing the equipment utility systems installation.
“The MEP contractor needs to be responsible for reviewing and validating the existing utility systems to make certain all were sized accordingly to support the requirements of the new equipment.”
Quick says that to ensure a plant did not experience lost production during a recent upgrade, work was completed during offshift hours as well as on weekends.
“The Braun Project Management Team will work with the client and contracted trades to prepare and provide all the equipment specifications as well as the utility connection overlay,” he says. “This will in most cases be for the MEP contractor to complete pre-fabrication of materials to support the installation in advance to expedite the schedule.
“All the coordination and planning, including project meeting sessions on-site as well as via teleconference, resulted in a safe and effectively executed retool of the laundry.”

Automation and new equipment significantly improved transfer times, quality and capacity resulting in greater efficiency with less labor, according to Quick.
“That, in turn, enabled our customers to boost production to meet current and future demands,” he points out.
“In a recent new wash alley upgrade, we increased washer capacity by replacing older 400-pound open pocket washers with the newer and narrower N2 design, allowing the customer to add additional washers in the same footprint.
“Furthermore, as an additional measure of safety, the new washers are chute-loaded by a rail system. The system now operates without dedicated employees inside the wash alley.”
Jenny Repfennig, regional marketing manager, NAM region, for Miele Professional based in Princeton, New Jersey, says the commercial laundry industry has seen several key trends and popular upgrades in recent years, driven by the need to increase efficiency, reduce environmental impact and enhance operational effectiveness.
“We are constantly seeking input from our customers and partners,” she says. “There has been a significant shift toward energy-efficient models that consume less water and electricity. This not only helps in reducing operational costs but also aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability.”
Equipment that can perform multiple tasks (e.g., wash and extract) in one cycle is increasing in popularity, shares Repfennig. Upgrading machines with advanced control systems allows for more precise control over laundry processes.
This might include the development of customizable programs for different types of fabrics, which can lead to better cleaning results and fabric care, as well as energy savings.
“Miele is addressing these needs and others with the introduction of our new line of Benchmark washers and dryers, designed and engineered for on-premises laundry operations,” Repfennig says.
“Engineered for high throughput and trusted durability, Benchmark on-premises laundry provides hotels, hospitals and other facilities with reliable, onsite textile and linen reprocessing.”
She adds that Benchmark laundry is also engineered for sustainable performance and maximum fabric longevity.
Overall, there’s always a desire to enhance operations, Repfennig points out.
“Whether it’s laundry operators or facility managers in a hotel or a hospital, there is a desire to find ways to decrease machine downtime and increase operational efficiencies,” she says.
“Facilities professionals are more aware today that addressing back-of-house operational improvements can result in an improved bottom line and a better experience for their guests or patients—or whomever else is using their linens.
“Aiming to lower costs, facilities managers and laundry professionals are realizing that with the right machines, they can maintain their linens for longer without service fees or replacement costs associated with alternative machines or third-party services.
“And above all, most managers want to know their investments in laundry solutions are helping to achieve sustainability goals—using less water, energy and detergents when possible.”
Nate Murchison, vice president of customer support, and Scott Voss, vice president of technical engineering, for Ellis Corp. & Ludell Manufacturing in Itasca, Illinois, say in recent years, the company’s industrial laundry customers have often requested upgrades for their equipment with the most
popular being dryers, water systems, and dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems.
Upgrades to the machine controls have also been a significant focus.
“The motivation behind these requests is multifaceted,” share Murchison and Voss. “Replacing outdated dryers with energyefficient models has been a key strategy to reduce gas consumption. Additionally, enhancing heat recovery systems with technologies like Ellis’s Auto-Balance and UpTime® controllers have maximized energy savings, which can result in saving thousands of dollars each month.
“The installation of our DAFs is another common upgrade driven by the need to comply with local compliance limits and to avoid surcharges as municipal waste treatment facilities reach capacity.
“Finally, the inefficiency and maintenance difficulties of older controls, compounded by supply-chain issues, have led to upgrades in this area. These newer controls not only bridge the gap in sophistication but also offer easier navigation and troubleshooting, which is particularly beneficial for less experienced maintenance personnel.”
The primary challenge in implementing these upgrades has been the financial investment required, says Murchison and Voss.
“Capital upgrades demand a considerable financial commitment, which is often a hurdle for many in the industry,” they point out.
The two point out that Ellis has made a significant impact in assisting customers with their industrial laundry upgrades.
“Our customers acknowledge that if it weren’t for Ellis’s guidance, the prolonged issues they faced with their old machines would have continued to drain their resources,” they say.
“Thanks to the upgrades facilitated by Ellis, they have seen a clear return on investment and substantial resource savings, emphasizing the importance of Ellis’s support in proactive equipment management.”
Jim Shaw, vice president and national accounts sales manager for Lavatec Laundry Technology based in Beacon Falls, Connecticut, says that some of the most significant requests for upgrades the company fields revolve around a lower cost to own, improving productivity with more throughput per hour, optimizing energy usage, reducing labor and operator fatigue through automation, and improving the quality of the finished product.
“By utilizing better equipment designs and avoiding proprietary parts, Lavatec keeps the ‘cost to own’ to approximately 1.5 to 2% annually, whereas competitive designs can cost as much as 7-8% in parts on an annual basis,” he says.
“Our design upgrades include the Lavatec Cascade Drying system, which optimizes energy, reduces labor and improves productivity. The system recirculates the exhaust through a three-phase process. It keeps the energy within the system by optimizing the energy usage and is fully automated to process six loads of full dry goods per hour.
“We also offer the Lavatec Line Burner with a modulating gas valve. The valve reduces gas consumption, and the line burner distributes the heat evenly across the length of the cylinder, eliminating hot spots and the damage caused to polyesterbased products, cotton towels, and the rippling in walk-off mats caused by overheating.
“Lastly, the Infrared Red sensor option is programmed to read the temperature of the products in the cylinder to deliver a finished product with the desired moisture content.”
Shaw says Lavatec’s customers are impressed by the lower cost to own and with the more throughput per operator hour and per square foot ratios provided by recent upgrades.
“They have also reported better finished products with reduced damage and a decrease in utility costs,” he shares.
Brock Pellerin, vice president of Pellerin Milnor Corp. in Kenner, Louisiana, says the company doesn’t do much with upgrades on individual machines, adding that the machinery Milnor provides is generally flexible enough to handle and manage most tasks and changes over time.
“New machinery considerations tend to focus on labor savings and sustainability (reduction of utility requirements),” he points out.
“Occasionally, we will receive machinery inquiries relating to governmental mandates, such as wastewater limits, air quality management district emission requirements, etc.
“In some instances, a change in buildings due to lease expiration, growth (need more space) or logistical changes create the need for new machinery.
“We also get asked about software upgrades when available. Customers are looking for data management applications and they are looking for equipment that can integrate into these platforms.”
Pellerin says the changes have been requested because of labor availability, changes in utility cost and governmental regulations. He shares that budgeting
and financing are challenges laundries face when considering upgrades.
“Usually a thorough ROI (return on investment) is needed to justify investment to obtain financing,” Pellerin says.
“Sometimes, the issues are space availability in the laundry facility.”
He concludes that with upgrades, operators see a reduction in labor requirements, ergonomic improvement, utility and space savings, and regulatory compliance.
Like Pellerin, Joe Fleming,
national sales manager for Yamamoto North America in Bloomington, Illinois, says that the company’s equipment types haven’t changed a whole lot because many of the trends in the industry already align with Yamamoto’s equipment portfolio.
For example: water reclamation, reduced footprints, increased efficiencies, etc.
“If there’s anything we’re working on that’s come from the request of our industrial/ light industrial it’s the tilt feature on our WUN150,” he shares.
“Although that load size is petite
for most operators in this market, there are plenty of small operators that would love the feature to prevent employee injury risks and increase the unloading speed.
“Yamamoto prides itself on providing world-class quality for a competitive price. Tilt features and some of the other features that customers are interested in are not cheap modifications.
“They also add another level of complexity to equipment that could cause failures over time, assuring that we can engineer the new features effectively to
meet our standards is the first challenge.
“Making sure it doesn’t price our equipment out of the market is the next.”
Fleming says that with its already implemented reclaim systems, reduced footprints and other top-tier features, Yamamoto has received outstanding feedback.
“We enjoy being the best option for our customers,” he says. “By continuing to advance our equipment’s capabilities we are excited to grow with more clients in this market.”

Providing quality linen at fair price with world-class service
Gunderson Uniform & Linen operates on the basics of delivering a great product with honesty, integrity and a smile
BY MATT POE, EDITORMENASHA, Wis. — Gunderson Uniform & Linen traces its roots back to a single dry-cleaning location here that was started in 1952.
That year, a couple were heading from Chippewa Falls to California, pursuing a dream to open a laundry.
Along the way, the couple stopped to visit an ailing relative in a small town in the middle of Wisconsin.
While there, they saw a laundry in downtown Menasha for sale.
“Grandpa decided to buy the laundry and run it for a couple of years until he could make his dream of moving to California a reality,” says Sara Gunderson, granddaughter of founder Douglas.
“Seventy-two years later, and now in its third generation, Gunderson Uniform & Linen is still operating in the same building—of course with several additions and improvements throughout the years.”
During the early years, the focus was on family laundry and dry cleaning to provide for the growing need in the community, she points out.
“In 1969, the main plant was converted to a healthcare plant, and a 55-year partnership with a local healthcare system was born,” says Sara.
Her father, Gary, purchased the company from Douglas in 1989 and has continued to expand the company.
Sara also works with her brother Doug in the family business.
“We’ve been proudly serving Wisconsin businesses for more than 72 years,” she says.
OPERATIONS TODAY
Gunderson Uniform & Linen operates two plants. One is dedicated to healthcare and hotel linens, and the other is a food and beverage/uniform facility.
“We serve a diverse range of markets,”
says Sara. “Our mix includes healthcare, F&B, industrial and hotel.”
She says the healthcare/hotel plant operates six days a week while the F&B/ uniform plant runs five days a week.
Distribution is on the road six days a week.
“We have 150 employees across the two processing facilities and one distribution depot,” Sara shares. “Combined we have about 130,000 square feet of production space.”
The main hospital/hotel plant includes two tunnel washers, four pony washers (250 pounds each) and two 130-pound machines, and the uniform plant runs six split pocket washers along with multiple dryers.
On the finishing side, Gunderson has four flatwork irons and six folders.
“Weekly, we are processing more than 400,000 pounds,” says Sara.
STANDING OUT
Ensuring the cleanliness of the linens Gunderson delivers is of paramount importance to the company, says Sara.
“We conduct third-party lab testing on our linens quarterly and are proud to report nine consecutive years without any failed tests,” she points out.
“Our tailored wash formulas effectively eradicate 99.9% of all microorganisms, further guaranteeing hygiene standards.
“Additionally, we implement daily quality assurance measurements to uphold the highest standards in linen production.”
Sara shares that Gunderson is proud of its TRSA Hygienically Clean certification.
“We have been certified three times by TRSA, with the most recent certification in June 2023,” she says.
Besides cleanliness and quality, Sara points to several factors that make Gunderson stand out with its customers. First are its account management processes.
“We have dedicated account managers that are assigned to vertical markets,” Sara says. “This has allowed us to build relationships with our customers, have
a single source of contact and provide an elevated customer experience.
“We take a tailored approach with our customers. Also, we are a one-stop shop: linen, mats, direct sale, embroidery, etc.”
She says that the company has also placed significant importance on its company culture with programs that show its employees that they matter.
These include English classes for Spanish-speaking employees, a yearly local Resource Fair, an annual company party/picnic for all employees and their families, appreciation lunches, and a focus on its compass among other retention efforts.
Sara points to Gunderson’s commitment to world-class service as making
it stand out in the industry.
“Our vision is to have a team of 100% actively engaged people delivering world-class service,” she says.
Gunderson garments are tagged with radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips for tracking purposes.
“RFID tags carry an individual tracking number so the garment can be tracked throughout the laundry and rental process,” Sara points out. “This allows us to be able to offer reporting to our customers.”
Finally, she points to the company’s sustainability initiatives that set it apart.
Pellerin
Milnor Corp.
promotes fourth-generation family member to VP
KENNER, La. — Pellerin Milnor Corp., an industrial laundry equipment company based here, reports that Brock Pellerin has been promoted to vice president, effective immediately.
Pellerin formally began his career with Milnor in 2006 as a member of the application engineering department but spent numerous summers throughout his life working in the mailroom, human resources and on the factory floor.
These experiences helped him cultivate a deep understanding of company operations.
In 2013, Pellerin was promoted to regional sales manager, where he supported Milnor’s dealer network with his industry expertise.
During his time as a regional sales manager, Pellerin became a three-year graduate of TRSA’s Production Management Institute, was selected for the 2019 American Laundry News Panel of Experts, and currently serves as a member of the TRSA Next Generation Executives Network.
Pellerin’s responsibilities as vice president include fostering system sales throughout Milnor’s dealer network, and his goal is to utilize his knowledge and expertise to continue growing sales of Milnor equipment in North America.
“As a fourth-generation member of the Pellerin Family serving the laundry industry, Brock has clearly demonstrated his personal commitment to the successful application of Milnor products among his valued customers,” says James W. Pellerin, president and CEO of Pellerin Milnor.
“I know we can count on him to continue to promote strong, beneficial relationships throughout the industry.”

Her focus is to help plan, coordinate and execute marketing activity that reflects customer requirements and drive further brand awareness and engagement across the North American market.

“Erica’s expertise is a great addition to this next stage, developing key relationships with our existing and new customers, as we continue to help meet and exceed their requirements.”
Council will build key industry relationships to elevate Brightwell’s global reputation as a leader in high-quality, innovative and sustainable dispensing systems— designed to enhance hygiene and cleanliness.

Her role will also involve promoting sister company, Hylab, a new global brand dedicated to businesses’ hand care and paper dispensing needs, based on years of industry experience.
Council has a decade of marketing expertise across the hospitality and business-to-business sectors. Most recently she was a marketing specialist at a John Deere dealership and has held various marketing roles for several hotel and restaurant groups.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in hospitality, tourism and events.

Gunderson also stands out because of its growth, safety, leadership and community-mindedness, she says.
“We’ve had 12% average year-overyear growth since 2016, with a commitment to elevating our service and building relationships with our customers,” Sara points out.
“With our focus and priority on safety, we’ve gone two years with no lost time accidents.
“We have a 10-plus year average leadership tenure, and we’re community-

The U.S. team, based in Lenexa, Kansas, offers a fully equipped training facility, technical support, chemical testing laboratories, a warehouse and a distribution center supporting customers across North America.
Brightwell has established itself as a dominant player in the industry, with additional offices in France, Germany, Italy and Spain to cater to the global market.
Long-time industry professional joins Gurtler Industries
SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. — Gurtler Industries, a manufacturer of advanced detergents, specialty chemicals and injection systems for the commercial laundry industry based here, reports that Andy Feldman has accepted an expanded role with the company, responsible for enhancing company-wide sales growth.
He will be leading Gurtler’s sales efforts by supporting and coaching its outside personnel through all stages of the sales process up to and through post-installation.
Additionally, Feldman will be charged with helping create, implement and lead Gurtler’s marketing programs beginning in 2024, including augmenting the company’s presence at industry events.
Further, he will be tasked with managing existing customer relationships in which he has cultivated a long-term partnership.
Lastly, Feldman will continue to support the assimilation of the Vis-Tex Tunnel UV Systems acquired earlier this year, including harnessing the full innovation potential of this technology.
Gurtler acquired the Vis-Tex Tunnel UV technology for commercial laundries from OMNI Solutions in March 2023, when Feldman joined Gurtler on a consultant basis.
Greg Gurtler, president of Gurtler Industries, says, “I have known Andy for almost 30 years. He is the fourth generation of his family to work in the commercial laundry industry and his family still owns and operates laundries.
“During his three decades in the indus-
minded—we believe in giving back to the community that’s been good to us.”
FINAL THOUGHTS
While Gunderson has stood out and grown, Sara acknowledges that the past few years have presented some unprecedented challenges for the industry: COVID, rising costs and labor shortages to name a few.
“But these are hardly unique to just Gunderson,” she points out. “Having a great team, planning strategically and
try, besides working production and running laundries, Andy has been a vendor for both chain and independent laundries nationwide.”
In the industry, Feldman has served as the chair of the TRSA sales and marketing committee and has been a contributor to TRSA’s Textile Services magazine.
In addition, he has taught classes at TRSA’s Professional Management Institute (PMI) and Executive Management Institute (EMI) and led training with CSCNetwork and the Association for Linen Management (ALM).
Most recently, Feldman helped grow OMNI Solutions from a small OPL (onpremises laundry) provider into a multimillion-dollar business.
He is also a professional sales trainer and coach and has worked with many companies, including AFLAC, T-Mobile, the U.S. Army, Capital One, Lincoln Financial and the New York Mets.
Feldman has spent the past eight-plus months learning the Gurtler way and spent considerable time in the field with many members of the Gurtler team.
“After interacting with Gurtler’s management and their sales and service team, I learned of Gurtler’s commitment to service, quality, innovation, and personal training and development of employees,” shares Feldman. “These factors made my decision to join Gurtler very easy.”
“I believe Andy’s experience and expertise will assist Gurtler in further establishing our company as the leading chemical supplier to commercial laundries across North America,” Greg Gurtler adds.
From its headquarters and research center in suburban Chicago, Gurtler supports the entire spectrum of the laundry industry, including healthcare, hospitality, industrial uniforms, shirt laundries and textile rentals.
Gurtler is a family company now in its third generation, maintaining its tradition of excellence, innovation and service.
playing to our strengths are just some of the ways we’ve been able to persevere and allow us to feel optimistic about the future.
“While there have been significant improvements in the areas of laundry equipment, information technology and fabric technology, the principle of providing quality linen at a fair price with worldclass service has not changed,” Sara says. “It still comes down to the basics of delivering a great product with honesty, integrity and a smile.”
Ecotex purchasing Mohawk Medbuy Linen Services
BURLINGTON, Ontario — Mohawk Medbuy Corporation (MMC) reports it has sold its Linen Services division to Ecotex Healthcare Linen Service, a family-owned healthcare linens service business in Canada and the United States.
The sale follows a competitive process facilitated by a third party and conducted in collaboration with MMC Members. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The outcome meets the criteria Mohawk Medbuy established at the outset to ensure continued employment for its Hamiltonbased employees and long-term service commitments to the hospitals and other customers it supports.
Divesting its linens business will allow MMC to focus on its growing, national healthcare supply chain services.
“Mohawk Medbuy has a 50-year legacy of providing quality linens services and we’re very proud of our team,” says Peter Longo, MMC’s chief operating officer. “Ecotex is extremely well equipped to build on the dedicated service we’ve provided—and is bringing new investments in equipment to the Hamilton plant.
“It’s a very positive next step for our linens staff, our member hospitals and customers, and the City of Hamilton.”
Ecotex provides healthcare laundry services using its large regional linen reprocessing facilities. Its use of environmentally friendly practices has earned the company a Clean Green certification.
“We’re thrilled that MMC and their hospitals selected Ecotex based on the value, quality and savings we offer,” says Ecotex President and CEO Bryan Bartsch. “We look forward to having the 200-plus person team in Hamilton become part of the Ecotex family and to delivering our high standard of service to our new customers.
“To ensure that, we’re making infrastruc-
ture investments to the Hamilton facility this year, including a new tunnel washer, press, shuttle and dryer system.”
For hospitals currently served by MMC, the company says Ecotex brings a new level of scale and resources. Based on the company’s expertise and strong track record within health care, the selection of Ecotex was firmly endorsed by all the hospitals currently served by MMC’s linen operations.
“This is a very good outcome for our patients, our hospital and our community,” says John Aldis, senior vice president of finance and corporate services at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
“It reflects the effort MMC undertook to engage member hospitals through the process, align on key objectives, and find the best match in a partner that really understands and can meet our evolving linen service needs into the future.”
The selection of Ecotex was the right decision, according to Paul Truscott Jr., senior vice president and chief operating officer of Health Sciences North (HSN).
“Linens are essential to patient care,” he says. “The scale, resources and operational redundancy that Ecotex brings to the table gives us great confidence that they will deliver for our hospital. Equally important, they’re able to provide cost savings in the process. That’s a win-win for HSN.”
Mohawk Medbuy and Ecotex implemented a transition phase to ensure a seamless service handoff on Feb. 29.
Advisory firm launched for laundry operators, vendors
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Rudi Moors, a 32-year veteran of the laundry business, reports that he has created Beyond Washing LLC, a strategic services consultancy.
He says that the advisory firm is designed so he can inspire, challenge and assist vendors who can offer meaningful solutions, as well as help operators further improve their bottom line with specific recommendations.
“Beyond Washing is designed to help operators improve their operations, apply best practices and the best available technology, and focus on specific KPIs,” Moors explains.
“I want to give back to the industry that gave me so much, with strategies that can help shape someone’s future while saving them money and improving their ROI.”
Moors will also provide expert advice to commercial and industrial laundries to help optimize plant operations, with his main focus on the wash aisle and utilities.
“For example, with wash aisle chemistry, most laundries only see it as 2-3% of their total costs,” he notes. “Who cares if you work to save 10% of that cost?
“But if you can improve specific KPIs by optimizing your chemical program, you can impact over 20% of your total costs through water and energy savings, extended linen life and increased productivity. That’s real money that drops to the bottom line.”
Moors most recently was North America’s ambassador for European hygiene solutions provider Christeyns, and he has served in many top management capacities over the years.
Shortly after beginning his career in 1992, he joined Henkel-Ecolab in Europe as a territory manager at the start of a 16-year stint with the company.
Following subsequent promotions with international sales and division manager positions, he left the company in 2008 to become the marketing director of laundry technology at Belgium-based Christeyns.
Three years later, Moors was named president of Christeyns USA.
Tasked with establishing headquarters south of Boston, he built the company’s business by introducing innovative chemi-
cal wash solutions and concepts, precise dosing equipment, water reuse concepts and wash aisle information systems.
He also was active with several acquisitions and instrumental in the negotiations that led to a merger with UNX Industries in 2022.
Through a partnership with TRSA and its certification initiatives, Beyond Washing will manage the certification auditors and process. The auditors verify that plants meet established Hygienically Clean and Clean Green standards.
“TRSA is looking forward to applying Rudi’s experience and expertise toward continuously improving and expanding its certification programs,” says Joseph Ricci, TRSA’s president and CEO.
