PUTTING THE RESI IN RESIMMERCIAL
Mark Taylor, commercial director at Invision, smart home distributor, talks about ‘resimmercial’ and how custom installers can help the hospitality industry to prepare for reopening.
Restaurants, bars and clubs have all been hit hard during the coronavirus pandemic. Imposed restrictions (including forced closures), as well as limits to capacity and opening times, has meant that the sector has seen significant impacts on business turnover with some even having to cease trading.

It’s reported that the hospitality industry saw the biggest economic decline of all sectors between March and July 2020. Even when dining was able to resume in July, output was still down by 60% compared to February of the same year1 .
These enforced lockdowns have caused a shift in consumer behaviour and while we see a plan in place for the easing of restrictions, how does the hospitality industry prepare?
The Deloitte Hospitality Team have advised that the sector needs to, ‘harness new technologies to deliver better value to – and connect with – their guests2’ and we agree.
Strengthening their digital- capabilities with things like bespoke AV systems that provide great entertainment and non-touch solutions, will help boost consumer confidence when they return.
We believe the technology that allows for monitoring of capacity as well as ordering and paying at the table (using QR codes or apps) will continue to be used.
It may be that each venue will prioritise keeping customers in for longer at a reduced capacity. As a result, they will need to heighten the customer experience while making them feel safe. Technology can help to do that.
This is where ‘resimmercial’ comes in. First coined in the US, the area between residential and commercial has often been referred to in the UK as light commercial and has been developing for a while.
Here at Invision, we have many customers that have been working in this developing area for some time. Following our observations of the market, we expect this area will continue to grow in demand, and feel custom installers are better placed and equipped to serve it.
Following years of designing and installing bespoke and fully integrated AV solutions that include high-performance entertainment, the expertise garnered by custom installers enables them to fulfil the needs of the hospitality sector with ease. Furthermore, the requirement from the sector to prepare to reopen effectively post - pandemic means that there’s an ideal opportunity for custom installers now.
Contrary to popular opinion, no two residential projects are the same. To truly understand what a customer wants and deliver it within the realms of what is available and what is possible, is no mean feat. Open communication is key, and this puts experienced residential integrators in the accustomed position to have similar discussions within hospitality and leisure.
Integration will be a big part of this discussion. Allowing ease of use and full control technology can be used to monitor, entertain and provide security all via one system. These integration capabilities allow for the connection of what seems like an endless list of devices meaning the sector has choice over what products they want to use to provide optimum results.
The speed of change is a trait synonymous with the residential market and technology is always developing. Homeowners want the best of the best and CIs understand that – they are always on the lookout for new systems or products to deliver a safe and desirable home environment. This can be easily replicated within hospitality and leisure as integrators’ accumulated understanding of the needs of consumers is only a win-win for the sector.
