A Kids-Helping-Kids Garage Sale

S

ummer is the perfect time to encourage the kids to look through their toys and … SELL them! Even better

sell them to support a charity. Start out by asking what toys they still play with and give them a chance to really think about the things they have that matter to them. Then talk about other children who may not have as much as they do or kids who are sick and need our help. Find nearby child-oriented charities on the computer and when your child finds one that touches his heart, suggest your kids raise money for that charity. Get your kids into a “Kids Helping Kids” campaign this summer by selling their unused toys is a great way to do it!

a letter from the EDITOR

G

oing back to school (or work) after the lazy days of summer can be challenging even for the best of us. August is back-to school time— and back to your crazy-busy life. To start the year off on the right foot, you’ll need to be organized and energetic. Check out “Summer Skills-Getting Ready For School”, on page 8, for smart strategies-and don’t miss our “Back-To-School Section” starting on page 12 for great tips on keeping kids’ healthy, active and on target academically. Often, we spend so much time worrying about outside influences on our kids and how to help them develop to the best of their abilities. But, what about our own continued growth and how we as parents influence our children? The standard that we set for ourselves can define our children’s opinions, especially their opinions of themselves. “This is especially true when it comes to appearance, self-image

and self-acceptance” says Patricia Mooneyham in Our Daughter’s Eyes, on page 15. Don’t skip this article or you’ll miss out on how impactful your own self-criticism can be on your kids’ idea of perfection. Today kids are striving for levels of perfection that are overwhelming, we are not meant to be great at everything. Switching gears to something that can be great every time is the local produce we have in our area. The Jersey tomato is famous, but there’s another fruit in the Garden State that’s finally getting its due — the peach. Be sure not to miss Peachy Keen Recipes on page 22 that will have your mouth watering. New Jersey now ranks fourth nationally in peach for peach production. Only California, South Carolina and Georgia grow more of the fruit. This year’s crop looks promising, the experts say so be sure to hit one of the local farms it’s a great way to spend a fun day with the kids.✲

Staying Connected

R

ecently, I had to travel for a work conference. My younger two kids do not particularly love when I travel for work, so last year around this time when I left for my conference, I made some creative plans to help them feel connected to me while I was away, and this year I did the same. Each day, I left a little gift for them to open. They opened a gift card to get ice cream with my husband, some glow-in-the-dark light sticks, new dry-erase markers for our white board at home, and a new wiffle ball and bat (since our bat broke) so they can get a fun game of wiffle ball going once again in our front yard. Additionally, I took some children’s books with me on my trip and at bedtime, I read the younger two a bedtime story over the phone. In these ways, we stayed in each other’s minds and hearts and remained connected even though we were 700 miles apart. One night, my colleagues and I were out to dinner and I forgot to bring a book, but my daughter suggested she and her brother read a book to me, which was equally fun.

My kids know that my work is very fulfilling for me Erin Taylor, MA and how much I love it. My intention is to model for them a mom who loves them deeply and also has a passion for the work that she does. I do not want to neglect what matters to me in a martyred sacrifice for them, but I also do not want to work so much that I am not available to them in the ways that I want to be. So I try to be fully present when I am working and fully present when I am with them. It is not always easy and I certainly do not achieve this completely each time, but that is my goal each and every day.✲ Erin Taylor, MA is a wife, therapist, writer, parent coach and mom to four children ages 7, 9 and 12. Her oldest daughter died of a heart defect as a baby. It Takes A Village Parent Coaching is a source of inspiration for her work, and you can reach her aterin@villageparentcoaching.com.

One often-overlooked task to your childproofing plan:

Secure Your TVs

Safe Kids Worldwide has partnered with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) to make homes safer by encouraging families to recycle their old TVs. As part of this effort, Safe Kids and CEA urge parents and caregivers to do a quick check of all the TVs in their home to make sure they are safely secured and properly placed. Heavier, boxstyle TVs placed on dressers or high furniture can tip over and cause serious injuries, even death, if they fall onto children. “Parents may not think about their TVs when they’re childproofing their homes,” says Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “It just takes a few minutes to look around your home. Check to see if your flat-panel TV can tip over. If you have an older, box-style TV, make sure it is on a low, stable piece of furniture. And if you aren’t using it regularly, consider recycling it.”

P

arents can do a lot to childproof their homes: Put medicine up and away. Place baby gates on the stairs. Put cabinet locks on cabinets. But what about checking their TVs? Injuries and deaths from TV tip-overs happen far too often. Every 45 minutes in the United States, a child is rushed to the emergency room because of a TV tip-over injury, and every three weeks a child dies from a television tipping over.

6 | August 2015

Safe Kids encourages families to include TV safety as part of their childproofing plans by following these tips to help keep kids safe: • Secure your TV. If you have a heavier, box-style TV, make sure you either secure it to a wall or place it on a low, stable piece of furniture that is appropriate for the TV’s size and weight. • Recycle your TV. To find a location near your home that safely and responsibly recycles unwanted TVs, go to www.GreenerGadgets.org. • Secure your flat-panel TV. If you’re replacing your CRT TV with a new TV, be sure your flat-panel TV is properly secured with a mount that has a safety certification by an independent laboratory (such as UL, CSA, ETL).✲ For more TV safety tips, visit www.safekids.org.

Summer Skills Getting Ready For School Tara Twente Pyfrin MA, M.ED

I

t’s almost that time of year again, before you know it, school bells around the country will be ringing and children will be heading back to school. The long summer nights, late mornings and relaxing afternoons will come to end. Transitioning from August to September can be a challenge for many children. Parents often question if their children have the skills to be successful in the upcoming school year. Skills are not always academic. Social and emotional skills are equally important for a successful school year. Establishing a back-to-school routine assists with strengthening the skills needed to get ready for school. Sleep Creating a bedtime routine at least two weeks prior to school will reduce bedtime battles and give children a fresh start for the year. Most elementary children need a minimum of 10-11 hours of sleep. “A recent study showed that children with consistent bedtimes tested better in reading, math and spatial comprehension, versus kids with sudden changes in bedtimes.” Sleep helps rejuvenate brain cells and gives children a fresh start in the morning. Bedtime routines also include morning routines. Begin getting your child up 15 minutes earlier each day to get them ready for that early morning rush. Children will be fresh and wide awake for the first day of school. Organization A typical school day is very structured; being organized is an important skill. To help your child get back in the routine of staying organized make organization a family affair. Establish “Organizing Days” where each family member takes an area to organize. Labeling is another way to help with organization. Place labels throughout the house to show your child where things should be set. Also, having a set place for their shoes, hats and coats helps with keeping them organized. Children as young as 4 8 | August 2015

years of age can begin sorting and putting away laundry. Being organized also fosters independence which is paramount in school. Meals Summer time is a time for eating and snacks however, during the school day children do not have the opportunity to eat all day. Set times for meals and snacks throughout the day which would be close to their school snack and lunch schedule. Remember snacks are min-meals and should be between 100-200 calories. Make them healthy. Begin sitting down and having breakfast every morning. “Breakfast not only fuels the body but also the mind.” Studies have shown children who eat breakfast perform better in school. Reading Reading is prominent in a school day. Summer time is a time where reading often gets put to the side for other activities. Practicing sustained silent reading for 20 minutes per day can increase attention spans, vocabulary and comprehension. When children are able to sit and concentrate for a designated time they will not only gain self-control but also broaden their choice of reading selection. Embrace reading time with your child and continue to keep it a routine throughout the school year. Remember when preparing to go back to school routine is important. Parents are responsible for implementing these routines to promote a “whole child” readiness. The first skills a child learns is at home. Make sure your starting your routine early and be consistent to get the school year off on the right foot.✲ Tara is a mother Literacy Coordinator, Reading Specialist, Adjunct English Professor and Doctorate Student studying Reading and Literacy. What You Might Expect About Your Little One Turning ONE By Samantha E Gill

I

am a Mom of a 6 year old well child and a 4 year special needs child. So the whole ‘milestone’thing can be a touchy subject. Since my first child was an ‘overachiever’ I was all about the magazines and websites with milestones. I loved to read them! You know: “Oh… she totally already did that!” or “she can point to like 6 objects!” Then when I had my 2nd child and she was delayed I suddenly found myself completely irritated with authors like myself: “who the heck is this chick to tell me that my daughter should be saying 2 or 3 words, maybe my daughter is shy. Maybe she will be the poet in the family!” You know how it goes. Fast forward 6 years later, one child is going in 1st grade, one child has a service dog and is doing great in her special needs pre-k and life is good! And really milestones are really just that: markers – little lists for us to see if our little ones are kinda-sorta-maybe on their way. And if they aren’t yet, the cool thing is, it’s totally okay because these markers, help you intervene early, help, and then your little one thrives, grows and does awesome. Life really is good. There’s no reason to panic! I promise!

Here’s a list of things you might expect around the one-year-old mark: • Walking without your help or the furniture’s help – even it’s a bit wobbly! • Pointing to objects of interest (yea… that’s you! or the dog…) • Speaking two or three recognizable words (mama… dada) • Deliberately dropping toys and “looking” for them (such an ‘awesome game’ …sarcasm… i.e. get them for me Mom/Dad!) • Don’t Sweat it: (Shyness i.e. “what if she really does want to be a poet!”) Some kiddos are naturally shy. With a little encouragement and preparation you can help them blossom. Being around people they don’t know or big groups is the hardest. Try baby-steps: have a play date at your house. Let your wallflower have soon-to-be-maybe-friend over. This will hopefully sprout a friendship. Don’t fret if your quiet one is still shy. That is okay! What do you do if you notice some delays? How can you help your child? • (Don’t P.C.O.)= Don’t Panic! Don’t Compare! Don’t Freak Out! • Now with all that being said… at the child’s next well visit, mention your concerns CALMLY to the Dr. Most commonly the Dr. will tell you the same thing (see above= Don’t P.C.O.) and at 18 month’s they will most likely recheck unless there’s somethings that really stands out or there’s really a huge concern. • At home, RELAX and play with your kid!! Get your child to get creative! You know: Do STUFF with crayons, paints and play dough. Talk to your child while you’re doing things around the house – use YOUR words and communication as much as you can. • And I know we hear people say this all the time, but really it’s true: all children are different. They all are developing differently. And if your child isn’t walking or talking at exactly their 1st birthday that doesn’t mean they’re developmentally delayed. They may walk and/or talk soon thereafter, and you know what? Throw a huge “you rock” party – they deserve it!✲

In Our Daughter’s Eyes Patricia Mooneyham

s parents we often do not realize how profoundly the measure we set for ourselves can define our children’s opinions, especially their opinions of themselves. This is especially true when it comes to things like appearance, self-image and self-acceptance. Hollywood and the fashion industry have set unrealistic expectations - even more so for women than for men. Photographic and computer graphic technology has become so advanced that images and especially images of people can be “enhanced” beyond recognition. The overwhelming influence of the entertainment industry on ourselves may sometimes make us unaware of how much our own self-image influences our children and as women especially our daughters. It has only been recently that the extent of the unrealistic morph of imagery has been exposed and critiqued. Almost simultaneously campaigns by companies like Dove and Hanes have challenged the industry definition of beauty. The Dove Real Beauty Campaign is especially powerful to watch. The campaigns promote self-love and assists women to see their individual beauty as others see them. In another popular social media video the extent of graphic enhancements is displayed right before the viewers eyes. The video posted by David Wolfe specifically calls out the unrealistic beauty expectations set by these images. Self-criticism in the pursuit of perfection may seem motivated and commendable, but is it? Who sets the idea of perfect and when does it become achievable? In a world bombarded with imagery how are we supposed to balance personal improvement with self-acceptance. As a mother this is a skill that can be life altering not only for our selves and for our children. Security is one of those basic psychological needs that we all have. Feeling secure is not just about safety and shelter. As a mother the true evaluators of our success are not the opinions of our peers, friends and family but the conception and actualization of self-love within our children. Acceptance and love for ourselves allows for the acceptance and love of others. Self-sacrificing mothers too often forget that if you don’t take care of yourself; it doesn’t put you in the best position to take care of someone else. This is not just physically but also mentally. The phrase “work hard, play hard” has a lot of value in the concept of balance. When it comes to finding balance between physical care and self image, it is important to know where to draw the line as far as the expected results for diet, exercise and replenishment. Author Louise Hay has some wonderful books 16 | August 2015

on self-love. Her book “Loving Yourself to Great Health” goes into depth about our connection with food and not only our psychological relationship with food, but also how that relationship impacts us physically. If we measure ourselves in terms of the size of our clothes would we want our children to do the same? So as we heal ourselves in this area how can we create a path for our children as well? Here are some basic ways to create an atmosphere of striving for personal best while loving our unique and very special selves which is what we all want for our daughters: w Set Boundaries - When we set and hold boundaries with our children, they not only learn to respect the boundaries that are set in your relationship, but they also learn to set boundaries for themselves in their relationships with others. In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” w Walk the Talk - If we give consequences but don’t actually follow through with them it is confusing for our children. They are not sure what to expect if you are inconsistent. This in turn affects their feelings of personal security and that opens the door to things like peer pressure. Knowing why we set a consequence is an important part of parenting it helps to stand firm even after a long day. w Know What Your Values Are - Speak to children in terms of how actions match your values. Don’t assume your children know what your values are unless you have talked about them. Volunteering is a great family activity, but if we teach it as an obligation instead of an opportunity to share your time and talents with others, our children will miss out on the true value of the experience. The same goes with holiday traditions. It is good to evaluate from time to time what activities your family is giving their time to. Being present and engaged relieves stress and increases self-confidence and self-worth. w Ask for Help - So often fear of rejection makes many people not ask for help at all. With women, sometimes asking for help and receiving a “yes” but never actually receiving the help makes us leery of asking in the future. This comes from a fear of disappointment. Just like we don’t like to disappoint others, we don’t like to be disappointed. If you are feeling like there is no help or that you can’t seem to get the help you need this can lead to negative thoughts and lower self-esteem. It is good to ask for help as long as we don’t put unrealistic expectations on receiving it. Remember the answer is always “NO” until you ask the question. w Set Realistic Expectations for Ourselves - On the same note do not set expectations for others. Teaching our children about self control and what is in their control is important to keep them from being overwhelmed and helps in decision making. When we feel that we make empowered decisions self-esteem rises. w Setting Goals with Measurable Outcomes - The goal setting process has a lot of value besides just the outcome. It makes us think about not only how we are going to get there but also the value in the goal. This can be especially important when setting goals related to our physical fitness, which directly impacts our appearance. Being a certain size is of no value if you become sick or begin to hate yourself in the process. These are just a few ways that we can help our children (especially our daughters) be their personal best while we are on the road to being our own personal best.✲

5 Fun Swimming Exercises for Kids Swim Lessons

L

earning to swim is a repetitive process. It requires a lot of practice and willpower to commit to the same exercises day after day. Young children often thrive in environments with clear expectations, and can really get into swimming when they know exactly what they should be doing. It’s always good to make sure the exercises and practices are fun and full of variety for kids who are adjusting to life in the water!

Here are five fun swimming exercises for kids to encourage their love of the water!

1 2 3

Use combinations of swimming aids such as fins, pull buoys or snorkels Different aids help swimmers to target, train, and focus on specific techniques. The addition of swim aids is a fresh way to make regular swimming drills more fun! Have a diverse range of sets and drills to alternate between This helps to give young swimmers a variety of training exercises to do in the water and keeps their practice time from being overly monotonous while they are getting used to lessons.

4 5

Brainstorm target goals together with students By allowing each kid to have a strong sense of ownership over their own swim activities, you increase motivation, and encourage a sense of responsibility and pride in training exercises. Play interactive water sports such as water polo for kids These activities are physically rigorous, but are light-hearted activities and is another way to take a short but purposeful break from more intensive, solitary training regimes.âœ˛

AquaMobile Swim School provides at home private swim lessons throughout South Jersey and coast to coast across North America!

Incorporate land drills into practice times Allowing kids to exercise on dry land before or after working in the water offers a change of environment, and a chance to work on different and alternative exercises that impact performance in the water.

Family Living

Tips for ‘Kids Eat Right Month’ this August

Y

ou want the best for your kids. As role models, parents and caregivers play a vital role in children’s health -- teaching kids about healthful foods and making sure they get enough daily physical activity. More than one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, according to recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. But childhood obesity, which is associated with elevated risks of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, bone and joint problems and sleep apnea, amongst other adverse health effects, can usually be prevented. “August, which is Kids Eat Right Month, is the perfect opportunity for families to focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles,” says Marina Chaparro, registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. To help, Chaparro is offering parents and caregivers tips they can use to promote healthy habits. Shop smart. Get your children involved in selecting the food that will appear at the breakfast, lunch or dinner table. Be adventurous by picking a new food every week. Cook healthfully. Involve your children in the preparation of all meals with age-appropriate tasks. Getting your kids involved helps teach them about food, and may entice them to try new foods they helped prepare. Eat right. Breakfast is a critical meal. Make sure no one in the family skips it -- including you. In the evening, sit down together as a family to enjoy dinner and the opportunity to share the day’s experiences with one another. Research indicates that families who eat together have a stronger bond, and children have higher self-confidence and perform better in school. Plan wisely. When planning meals, start by filling half the plate with fruits and vegetables, choosing low-sodium options. Make sure at least half the grains your family eats are whole grains. For beverages, choose water over sugary drinks, and opt for fat-free or low-fat milk. Also, be mindful of appropriate portion sizes.

20 | August 2015

Get moving. After meals, get moving together. Aside from being a great way to spend time together, regular physical activity strengthens muscle and bones, helps to achieve a healthy body weight and supports learning. It can also help develop social skills and build self-esteem. Kids are encouraged to be active for 60 minutes per day. Consult an expert. A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) can deliver the highest level of nutrition counseling. Consider consulting an RDN to ensure your family is getting needed nutrients with a meal plan tailored to your family’s lifestyle and busy schedule. To search for an RDN in your area, to find more healthful eating tips, recipes and videos, and to learn more about Kids Eat Right Month, visit KidsEatRight.org. As a parent, you are highly influential, and habits formed early on could potentially last a lifetime. Take steps to steer kids to a path of good health.✲ StatePoint Media

When Allergies Attack By Dolores Hoffman

W

hen your child has an allergy, whether it’s food or pollen, it can quickly take over your life. Food allergies are becoming more and more common affecting three million U.S. children. Almost 50% of them have a history of severe reactions. Fortunately, there are ways to make life less stressful by taking control and taking precautions. Plan Ahead Eating out can be tricky. Pack a lunchbox with your child’s favorite meal and plastic cutlery. A friend of mine packs her son his own cupcake or slice of cake whenever they go to birthday parties. Assembling a kit is a must. Keep it handy for babysitters, preschools and pack it when you travel. It should include oral antihistamines, such as Benadryl, Epipen (if prescribed by doctor), and a laminated card with your child’s name, emergency contact and your child’s physician. Also, remember to keep safe snacks on hand, so you don’t get stuck with a hungry child and no food choices. Read Labels Reading and understanding food labels is crucial to your child’s safety, particularly when trying a new product. If you’re not sure of an ingredient, don’t use it. Cross contamination is another concern. Look for products that are produced in a dedicated facility. Contact the manufacturer directly any with questions. They’re always helpful and reliable. Know the Enemy Educate yourself with foods that trigger your child’s food allergy. For instance, eggs are used as an ingredient in some vaccines. Wheat can be found in some hair and skin products and in craft supplies. Make sure that everyone caring for your child, including daycare workers, school staff and family members, understands what your child cannot eat and 22 | August 2015

what steps should be taken to ensure that safety. If an allergic reaction occurs, be sure to have a clear plan of action. When your child is old enough to understand, make sure they know never to accept food from anyone. If your child suffers from severe allergies, have them wear a MedicAlert bracelet and carry a medicine pack with them. Take Advantage of New Technology WebMD has introduced a new app for iPhone users. It’s called WebMD Allergy and can be customized for the entire family. We tested the app to see if it was worth the download. Here’s what we’ve found. Based on the allergies you have, the free WebMD Allergy app for iPhone helps prepare for each day with a personalized allergy and weather forecast. That way you can plan accordingly for that day’s outdoor activities According to Dr. Hansa Bhargava from WebMD, this app can be family optimized -- users can create multiple profiles and track different allergies for each family member. WebMD Allergy has a large library of allergy articles, slideshows and videos in seven categories: Outdoor, Indoor, Skin, Drug, Food, Insect Bites and Stings, and Latex. This app also allows users to schedule timely push notifications which alerts them of high allergen levels in their area. One of the keys to managing allergies is knowing the severity of your triggers before starting your day so you can customize your alerts based on the severity of the allergy forecast. Constantly worrying about your child’s food allergies can affect the mental and physical health of everyone in your family. Don’t spend your life waiting for disaster. Allergies can be scary, but it’s important to educate your child and instill a healthy outlook while making certain your child enjoys normal activities.✲

Peachy Keen Recipes By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

It’s one of my favorite times of the year -- peach season! My family and I love peaches in pies, cobblers, pancakes, muffins -- even made as a sauce to go over chicken, but my personal favorite way to enjoy a peach is to give it a quick wash and go in for a bite! I don’t even mind the juice that usually runs down my chin. A wet paper towel in hand and all is good! Peaches are as nutritious as they are delicious, so go ahead and get yourself and your family some sweet Jersey peaches while they’re in season!

Fresh Peach Crumble

• 6 cups ripe peaches, peeled and sliced • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar or natural sugar substitute • 3 tbs. unbleached all-purpose or whole wheat flour • 1 tsp. lemon juice • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Crumble Topping

• 1 cup unbleached all-purpose or whole wheat flour • 3/4 cup raw sugar or natural sugar substitute • 1 1/2 tsp. non-aluminum baking powder • 1/4 tsp. sea salt • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg (optional) • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 1/2 cup butter, melted and slightly cooled Preheat oven to 375°. Place peaches in a greased 8-inch square baking dish. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, 3 tablespoons of flour, lemon juice and cinnamon; sprinkle mixture over peaches. In a separate bowl; combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Stir in egg until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over the peaches. Pour the melted butter evenly over topping. Bake 3545 minutes or until peaches are cooked through. Serve warm, with ice cream or whipped topping, if desired.

Peach BBQ Sauce

• 2 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 cup ketchup • 2 tbs. yellow mustard • 2 tbs. apple cider vinegar • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 2 tbs. brown sugar or natural sugar substitute • 2 tbs. unsulphured blackstrap molasses • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional) • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste • 2 cups fresh peaches, peeled and diced In a saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil and garlic cloves, cook for 40–60 seconds, do not let garlic burn. Then discard garlic and add all other ingredients to the saucepan except the peaches and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. While the sauce is simmering, puree the 2 cups of peaches, and after the sauce has simmered for 10 minutes, add the pureed peaches and stir until sauce is combined well with the peach puree. Spoon the peach BBQ sauce over grilled chicken, fish or steak before serving. As always, Bon Appetit!
