Dear Readers,

ou may be wondering why my family is on the cover this month. I had originally planned for the December issue to be my last... I was going to say goodbye to all of our readers. As many of you know, I am a mom of two small children. I started creating South Jersey MOM while I was pregnant with Kayden and a newlywed. I decided to do the magazine, as it would allow me to keep my children home and still contribute financially to my family. Kayden was 9 months old when I launched the first issue. Now Kayden is 4 ½ and Camille will be 3 next month. As babies, Kayden and Camille were not affected by the 12-14 hour days I put in, six days a week. But now, they are getting older

and need more of my attention. I have struggled with giving my children the attention they need and deserve, while still giving the attention to the magazine that it needs and deserves. I thought and prayed over this decision for more than a year and had come to the conclusion that I would rather be a successful mom than a successful business owner. BUT life has a funny way of working itself out. Along came an opportunity to keep South Jersey MOM going, but somehow create less work for me and more time with my family. I’m so excited about what’s coming next month! I can’t tell you now...but let’s just say... South Jersey MOM is here to stay and will be even better than before!✲ Your Friend and Fellow MOM,

P.S. Don’t worry, we will still be holding the Cutest Kid in Town Contest each month and your child could still be selected for a future cover!

Cold, You Don’t Know Cold ast year, lots of snow; this year, they say we are in for a very cold winter. I never understood what “cold” really meant until I lived in Alaska. The snowy winters were beautiful, packed with sledding, skiing and ice skating…oh, and shoveling, lots of shoveling. Shoveling is something you have to keep up with on a daily basis, because just when you get it all cleared off the driveway and go to the garage to get the car out, the two feet that was piling up on the slanted tin roof breaks loose and comes crashing down… once again blocking the garage door. We should have shoveled a bit faster. Deep snow in Alaska means those bicycle flags on 6’ poles start popping up in snow banks everywhere. No, they are not markers to help folks find their buried bicycle after a big snow fall. But the thought does cross your mind. Why would people leave their bikes on the side of the road to be buried when the snow comes? No, bicycle flags on long poles identify buried fire hydrants! That’s right, better hope you catch your fire early and that the firefighter is also an expert snow shoveler. But we won’t have to deal with shoveling this year. This year we get the cold. At least in New Jersey, we don’t have to worry about plugging our car into an electrical outlet every time we shut the engine off. That’s right, in Alaska, you plug your car into any regular electrical outlet to keep the engine block from freezing. This accessory is easy to install and should be number one on your shopping list if you are thinking about moving there. If you do not plug your car in, plan on starting it every 30 minutes or so to keep the engine from

L

[

freezing. You might wonder, “How do I shop or go to work if I have to keep running out and starting my car?” Don’t worry, even the malls have “plug ins” in every parking space! And cold means ICE. Walking on 6 inches of ice in the mall parking lot is easy once you learn the Alaskan shuffle. So you say, “don’t they put down salt?” No salt, sand on top of ice on top of sand…until it all melts in the spring. That’s what they call break-up. During these few weeks, you would be wise to avoid walking or driving anywhere because that 6 inches of icesand has now turned into concrete boulders that will turn your ankles and tear up the underside of your car. Oh, but you say it’s a dry cold. I’m sorry, -40 is -40! When you can’t feel your fingers or toes, it’s just plain COLD. Here’s how I judge what cold, real cold, is. Is it difficult to breathe because your snot has frozen your nostrils together? Is the “ice fog” clinging to your hair, eyebrows and eyelashes so thick that it makes you look like you are 150 years old? Have the icicles hanging from your gutters grown to the size of medieval swords? That’s cold! When you learn to accept that it is not going away for six months, you start thinking positively. Twenty degrees above zero and dry means it’s a great day for skiing. So this Jersey cold is all relative, you see. Have a warm attitude…and warm clothing…it will be over before you know it. Or you could just hibernate for a few weeks. Even the local grocery stores deliver for a very small fee!✲ —Nana Jean Nana Jean is a South Jersey grandmother with two daughters and six grandchildren. At bus time minus 10 minutes, my daughter said, sweetly, “You know, Mom, sometimes when I get really tired, I get a headache. “That’s okay, Honey, I said. “I had your doctor fill your medical form so that if you need it for a headache, you can take Motrin. “No I can’t. “Sure you can. And girls who stay up late two nights will go to sleep as wacky, dancing fun-lovers and wake up as zombies; not bubbly, boogie-woogie ghosts, but shuffling, living-dead creatures, like Frankenstein but with fewer people skills. I sent her off to school and headed to the pediatrician’s office, where I asked if the doctor could please complete the form. It was not yet 9 a.m. and if I could get the form to the school, it might beat my daughter to the nurse’s office. “It will be three to five days, and a five dollar charge,â€? the receptionist said. “What? I already paid for a visit to get the medical form filled out, and it’s not filled out. I have to wait five days and pay more?â€? My cell phone rang. It was the school nurse. My daughter had a headache. I got the form signed, raced 10 miles back to school, handed the signed form to the secretary, and headed home to brush my teeth. The school nurse called again. “The doctor forgot to write down the dose I’m supposed to give her. I called the office and asked them to fax a written dosage, and they said it would take three to five days and five dollars‌â€? I put down my toothbrush, grabbed two tablets of ibuprofen, drove to school, walked it in to the nurse’s office and watched as my daughter swallowed them. She took one look at my clenched jaw and went back to class. I drove to the coffee bar, threw back a shot of espresso and headed for the shower. Victory was mine!âœ˛

Capturing Your Baby’s First Christmas E

By Makema Douglas

veryone wants a piece of the action when it comes to celebrating baby’s first Christmas. It’s one of the most joyous times of the year to give, love and share with others. The fun in finding ways to recognize and capture your child’s experience is limitless and priceless. Therefore, it’s important to explore your child’s developmental stage, discover his interests and research options for recording this special time. Within the first couple of months, most babies enjoy and respond to sounds and sights. Valerie Ward, Director of the Infant/Toddler Program at All Kids First says, “During the holiday season, we play lots of Christmas music. One of the easiest songs for the babies to learn is Jingle Bells.” Using a holiday song to build a theme is a great starting point. Activities can be extended for days and may also include play that involves instruments, games, costumes and assorted treats. Maximize your opportunities and give your baby a chance to experiment with a variety of new foods, choices and places.

NewBehavioral Network Autism Program s Functional Behavioral Assessments s Social Skills Classes s Support/Skill Building Groups for Parents and Grandparents s Child Care for Children with Behavioral Challenges s Consultation Services to School Districts

Lizzy Kennedy, mother of a 4-month-old son, suggests changing the scenery to add holiday cheer. ”We’re taking a vacation to Disney World.” Generally, babies are fascinated by bright lights and colors. Textured things to touch, taste and see are intriguing, especially faces. There’s no need to make things complicated. Any location, from the snowy front porch to the stocking clad mantle, can become a perfect place for a “first-time” photo. The holiday season always offers a host of first-time traditions, such as pictures with Santa at the mall and keepsake ornaments. When asked about spending Christmas with her two young toddlers, Leesa Walker offers, “It’s a time to create traditions, memories and being with family. Why spend money on presents they’re not going to remember?” When considering suitable toys for your child, make it easy. Let your baby browse the toy section and choose. Later, wrap the gifts and allow him or her the pleasure of unwrapping each one. Start a new tradition with your baby. It can be as simple as eating Christmas breakfast with the grandparents or taking a family photo in front of the Christmas tree. Make the Christmas season last. It’s not a crime to have more than 12 Days of Christmas. Begin and plan your activities throughout the month. Jeanine Rodriguez knows all too well the rigors of planning a busy holiday schedule. As she speaks of her infant daughter’s first Christmas, she shares, ”Our family tradition has been to celebrate both Hanukah, which begins sundown on December 1st [this year], and Christmas.” Consider your lengthy list of possible things to do and give your family ample time to plan and do them. Try to repeat the best activities. Careful planning around the baby’s schedule is crucial. A fussy baby will quickly call an end to a well-planned day. Last, there is a wide range of methods for sharing and maintaining your baby’s first Christmas information, experiences and images. Taking photos, creating photo albums and frames, personalizing items, making videos, recording in 3D, cell phone videos, Skype and Facebook are a few. Be creative and have fun. Remember, your baby will only celebrate a first Christmas once.✲

GIVING ANXIETY THE AX:

Five Tricks and Techniques to Help You Keep Calm

P

icture this: you are lying in your bed at the end of a long, stressful day. But as you try to will your body to sleep, your mind has other plans. The worries you’ve pushed aside all day begin to creep in: your performance at work, your mortgage payment, your children’s health, your marriage, the housework. Before you know it, that familiar old feeling overwhelms you. Your heart races, your skin crawls, and you feel as though there is just no help for any of it. Once again, a peaceful night’s sleep has been interrupted by that silent, yet powerful, epidemic that is sweeping our country… anxiety. “If you walk down the street on any given day, about one in four of the people you walk by either has an anxiety disorder or will suffer from one at some point in their lives,” writes Dr. Charles Elliott and Dr. Laura Smith, coauthors of Overcoming Anxiety For Dummies, 2nd Edition.

Bend a friendly ear. Anxiety is a lonely feeling and, in turn, loneliness increases anxiety. Research shows that social support helps people deal with almost any type of emotional distress, so reaching out to friends and family is a great way to help stop an anxiety attack quickly. Call a trusted friend to confide in, or stop by for a visit with a parent or sibling and talk to them about what’s going on with you. Try a soothing tension treatment. The most distressing aspect of anxiety is the way that it makes your body feel—tense, queasy, racy and tight. There are some quick and simple ways that you can temporarily break through the tension and help relieve your anxiety. For example, you can soak in a hot bath or take a long, hot shower. A 15minute massage from your spouse or friend (or a longer one from a professional if you can afford it!) will also help. Examine the evidence. The way you think strongly influences the way you feel. Anxious people have a tendency to think about things in ways that increase their anxiety. One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to examine the evidence for your anxious thoughts. First, write down what you are worried about, and then ask yourself some questions about those thoughts. For example, Is this worry truly as awful as I’m thinking it is and in a year, how important will this event be to me? Escape into a good book or TV show. As a general rule, avoiding your anxiety is not a good idea. However, if you are in a situation where you need to calm down 10 | December 2010

quickly, or if you still haven’t mastered the art of dealing with your anxiety, distractions can be helpful. If you want to escape from your worries for a while, consider getting lost in a good book, a riveting movie, a challenging video game or even some mindless television. Practice living in the moment. It may sound cheesy or clichéd, but staying present and focusing on the here and now can be very powerful when it comes to overcoming your anxiety. Think about the things you are worried about. Chances are it’s something that hasn’t even happened yet and may never occur. ✲

When are Normal Childhood Fears No Longer Normal? By Yevgeniya Ratnovsky, Ph.D., Martin E. Franklin, Ph.D. and Diana Antinoro, Psy.D.

O

ccasional fears and worries that come and go are a normal part of childhood. However, for some children, this developmentally appropriate phenomenon may be a sign of an emerging anxiety disorder that can impair their functioning. Can parents differentiate between symptoms of a potential anxiety disorder versus developmentally appropriate fears? If a child consistently displays high levels of distress by crying, throwing tantrums or “freezing” when faced with feared situations, or if he or she consistently tries to avoid situations that make him or her anxious, this may be a sign that the child is suffering from a clinical level of anxiety. It’s also important to consider the degree to which anxiety interferes with a child’s ability to engage in age-appropriate activities. For example, if a child is having difficulty with attending school or withdraws from social activities due to anxiety, the child’s symptoms may already be preventing him or her from reaching ageappropriate developmental milestones and may therefore warrant evaluation and treatment. are right now, and recognize all the changes you’ve already made in your life. Pat yourself on the back and acknowledge yourself for all the inroads you have made. It takes courage to make changes, and you have proven that you have that kind of courage. Each year will bring new experiences and every Christmas will get easier and more enjoyable.

t’s that time of year again, the holidays looming large before us and a particularly challenging time for those who are separated, divorced or experiencing difficulties in a relationship. If this is the first year your children will spend the holidays with your ex, it will be even more of a challenge.

I

PREPARING FOR THE HOLIDAYS It seems that, no matter how much we try to prepare ourselves, when the holidays begin, many people feel like hiding in a cave. What makes it even more difficult is seeing all the TV images that show blissful people and families spending happy moments together. Messages of love, peace and joy are thrown at us at every turn. So to you, who are now facing the holiday on your own, without your children, it might feel as if you are the only person in the world fending for yourself. But, let me assure you, you are not alone. While TV ads make it all look fabulous, the holidays are actually a difficult time for many, even those that are married. HOW TO BEAT THE HOLIDAY BLUES While it may seem that you are stuck with the bad feelings surrounding the so-called festivities, there are things you can do to make the holidays a little less stressful. To beat the holiday blues, try adopting a few of the following ideas. They might even have a positive impact on the way you move forward with your life.

by knowing that, more than like1. Begin ly, there will be some sadness if this is

your first holiday alone. Be okay with the sadness. Remember, what you resist,

www.southjerseymom.com

persists, so if you start to feel sad, keep in mind that sadness is just another emotion. If you allow yourself to feel the sadness without running away from it, it will pass through you more quickly. Once you let yourself fully experience your feelings of sadness, you will make room for other happier feelings that will take the place of the sadness.

the courage to reach out to fam2. Have ily members and friends. It’s okay to let

people know that you would like to spend time with them since this is your first holiday alone. Better yet, invite them to your house and host the celebration. If neither is possible, make yourself available to those who may also be alone for the holidays, or volunteer with a charity where you are making a contribution of yourself. Giving is one of the best ways to diminishing lonely feelings.

the children will be with you this 3. Ifholiday, now is a good time to start a

new tradition with your children and watch it lift your spirits. A woman I know started a tradition of reading a special Christmas story each night to her children. The kids loved it and looked forward to a new story every evening. It was such a success, she compiled the best Christmas stories ever told and had them published. Perhaps you and your kids can do something similar. You might gather together and make ornaments that signify the beginning of a new life. If the children are old enough, ask them for their ideas for making Christmas a little brighter. You will be sur-

yourself whether there are any 5. Ask new choices you can make that will

propel you in the direction of a more inspiring future. When you get your answer, do not be afraid to take a few chances and run with them. Starting a new life can be very exciting, especially when you relax and allow yourself to enjoy the changes. Take a few risks and see how good you feel. Bear in mind that the holidays last for a short while, so put them in proper perspective. Instead of blowing the holidays out of proportion, remember that, before long, things will be back to normal. Why not use the holidays as a way of setting the ground work for your new beginning? Make up your mind that you are going to show up differently in your life and your relationships. As Debbie Ford says in her book, The Right Questions, “Every choice we make leads us in one of two directions. We are headed either towards a future that inspires us or toward a past that limits us.” In which direction are you headed? Why not use this year’s holiday season to start moving in a new direction? Move into an inspiring new year filled with joy, fulfilment and happiness by giving yourself the gift of healing your heart.✲

Be Good to Your Pregnant Self During the Holidays

P

regnancy is one of the most joyous times in a woman’s life, and celebrating the holidays is the high point of the year for many. But when the two collide, it’s enough to put you on your OB’s naughty list. With a little thought and planning, you and your baby can ride right through. Whether you are pregnant or not, it’s important to take steps to keep healthy during the busy holiday season. Maintaining a healthy body and mind requires plenty of rest, exercise and good nutrition any time of the year. Pregnancy, however, brings new challenges and demands an even more proactive approach to health. Dr. Kimberly Bridges-White of Garden State Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates in Voorhees offers a list of in depth ideas for taking care of your pregnant self during the holidays. Plan ahead and start early. Instead of making one giant shopping trip that will surely exhaust your body, mind and spirit, plan out several, smaller trips over the course of a few weeks. You might even get a little inspiration for those more difficult gift recipients. Listen to your body. “If you start feeling achy or sore, sit down and take a break. Your

body will let you know when you are doing too much,” says White. You may be used to running a marathon in your non-pregnant state, but carrying a child is hard work. You might be quite surprised at how tired you become from seemingly easy activities. Get a pre-natal massage. Massages are great for relieving stress, especially if you have been carrying a lot of shopping bags. Just be sure to use a masseuse who is certified in prenatal massage therapy. Give Happy New Year’s gifts. “It’s kind of a nice, unexpected surprise,” says White. If you cannot get everything done in time for the actual gift-giving holiday, take a few extra days and maybe even catch a sale or two. Use the Internet and gift cards. With the wonders of modern technology, you can complete all your shopping with your feet comfortably propped and a warm mug of cocoa in hand. Or, during your next late night run to satisfy your craving for apple pie (or your significant other’s late night run), pick up some gift cards. Most grocery stores carry a wide selection.

HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S SPEECH?

By Kate Hogan Take advantage of professional chefs. There are so many choices for good, pre-made food, you can throw a party and not have to cook yourself. “If you put the food in your own bowls and platters, no one will know the difference,” says White. Not that she is speaking from experience. But by all means, take all the credit! Ask for help! Most women do not like to ask for help but, in reality, we all need some. Many women think they have to be a super hero by creating the perfect holiday memory; but by properly taking care of yourself and your developing child, you are already extraordinary. Besides, by asking for help, you are creating an opportunity for someone else to make a new holiday memory and maybe even start a new tradition. So remember, drink plenty of fluids, stay off your feet and don’t overdo it. But most important, take the time to savor and enjoy this truly remarkable time in your life.✲

Knock-Knock. Who’s there? Interrupting donkey. Interrupting don— Hee-Haw! I admit it wasn’t the best joke I ever told, but it sure got a great response from the back of the car as we drove to school yesterday morning. “Tell it again, Daddy!” Jack yells as he By Brian Fountain kicks the back of my seat. “Do the pig!” Molly urges. After running the barnyard gamut we pull alongside a police car. Molly examines the officer behind the wheel. “Do you think that policeman is a dad?” she asks. With a quick glance I noticed he looked tired, with rolled shoulders and thinning hair. “Probably,” I say with a chuckle. “Do you think, if his kids don’t behave, he puts them in jail?” Jack asks. We discuss this new theory and, as I imagine the prospects of a time out “up the river,” the light changes and we continue down the road. “I’m glad you’re not a policeman, Dad,” Molly says for my benefit. “You’d never arrest us. You’re a great daddy. You just need to work on your personal hygiene.” Jack roars with laughter at this complete non sequitur, though he has no idea what his sister means. I’m not sure she does either, but, suffice to say, I do a quick breath check to ensure all is “as it should be.”

pop’s culture

Knock Knock! Who’s There?

At the next light, the kids begin performing their version of knock-knock jokes. Jack’s were typical of a 4-year-old boy: “Knock-Knock.” “Who’s there?” “Um… A banana” “A banana who?” “Your butt!” From the rear view mirror I see him throw his head back and wail with laughter. Molly joins him as they begin a chorus of butt-related jokes, each greeted with more hilarity. Where do they get their sense of humor? After explaining the importance of education and how proud I am of their good marks in school, my sweet little girl responds with a resounding belch that shakes the car windows. The two crack up once again and all I can do is shake my head as I pull into the school parking lot. I park and we all get out, the kids donning their backpacks. We walk Molly to the door first. As I bend to kiss her goodbye, she whispers in my ear. “That was fun, Daddy.” She gives me a quick peck and off she goes. I smile as I watch her head into school. I hold Jack’s hand as we cross the parking lot to the pre-school. “Daddy, how long do I have to go to school for?” I quickly reply, “Mommy will pick you up at 12:15.” I open the door and we walk up the stairs to his classroom. “No, Daddy. How many DAYS do I have to go to school?” I kneel down and say, “After this year, you have 13 years to go.” “Oh,” he replies, then pauses for a moment. “How long will you take us to school?” I reply, “As long as you’ll let me, son.” Jack smiles, gives me a kiss and starts to turn toward his classroom. “Jack,” I whisper. He turns back to face me. “Knock-Knock.” “Who’s there?” “A banana.” “A banana who?” “Your butt.” He laughs and scampers into his classroom. I guess I know where they get their sense of humor after all.✲ Brian Fountain lives in Winslow Township with his wife and their three young children. He is an Atlantic City restaurant manager and writes about the joys and struggles of raising a family from a father’s perspective.

HOLIDAY wrappings

1. Use an alternative form of wrapping such as a towel, sheet or shirt so there is no mess. 2. For shirt boxes, just wrap the lid and reuse the wrapped box. 3. Cut holiday cards in half and use the side without the wording as postcards or gift tags for next year. 4. Shred the paper and use as filler for other boxed or bagged presents. 5. Decorate plastic containers or shoe boxes then use for storage. 6. Wrap holiday decorations in the paper for storage. 7. Buy products that you can reuse. 8. Use the white side as scrap paper for children’s drawing. 9. Store ribbons and bows for future presents or craft projects. Be as creative as possible and involve older children for ideas. Have a plan in place before present-opening so that the paper can be gathered and stored as quickly as possible. Gone will be that paper sea and your family will have a calmer and “greener” holiday season!✲ Sheila Taney has two children and resides in Cherry Hill. Sweet to show children Opportunities they count

t’s ironic. In an age where connecting with each other is simpler than ever (think: Facebook, tweets, Blackberries and Skype), hectic work schedules for children and parents mean it’s easier than ever to become disconnected with each other. In a great book written by clinician and research professor Michael Ungar called, The We Generation: Raising Socially Responsible Kids, he discusses the great need for our children to feel noticed and loved in order to embrace “we” instead of simply “me.” Ungar says it’s unfortunate that sometimes parents attempt to connect with their children via expensive toys, or becoming too permissive or even overprotecting them. But the key to connection is to offer opportunities because, as Ungar says, “Give a child a chance to connect, and [he/she] will.”

I

The following tips to help strengthen your family connection come from ideas woven throughout Ungar’s book, professional experience and what has worked for our family.

1.

Give them a stage to show off. Habitually ask your child what they think they do well and then have them demonstrate. For my son, it always thrilled him to show us his ability to walk on his hands. Writing a word in cursive? Pouring juice into a glass? They love showing you what they’ve learned and how strong they’ve grown. Your glowing response will make them feel ten feet tall and cherished!

2.

Leave work behind. This is challenging for all of us, but take as much family vacation as work allows. The opportunities that will spring from time away from the grind relaxing with your children are GOLDEN and add up to memories for a lifetime. No one at the end of their life wishes they had just taken less vacation.

3.

Eat three together. Set a new rule about family meals together: everybody at the dinner table at least three times a week. It’s not always realistic to squeeze in three weeknight dinners, so think about Saturday breakfasts, Sunday brunches or Wednesday late night cookies and milk. At our house, we have Italian Friday nights, when we are often joined by a few of their friends. Have you seen the recent research results about all the emotionally healthy benefits of eating together? Prioritize it. It’s a simple gesture that packs a profound punch.

4.

Time out. Give them your time. So often, we underestimate how much our kids want to spend moments with us together. If you have teen children, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s important to carve out family time as often as possible, even if you get the message their friends have passed you up on the influence scale.

5.

Hear their highs and lows. Implement this best/worst exercise into every mealtime conversation. It’s easy. Ask your child to identify their best and worst daily moments. Do not use this time to lecture if their “worst” happens to be failing an exam. Instead, open your heart and connect with the feelings they are expressing. Share their joy! Cry with them over disappointments. If you haven’t tried this, you may be surprised at how much you will learn about your kids’ inner lives.

By Michele Ranard, M.Ed.

6.

Form a team. Rally your children to help with a project. Whether it’s helping an elderly neighbor with gardening, painting the family room, volunteering at church or organizing the garage, join forces and see how the fruits of your labor will extend way beyond an afternoon of hard work.

7.

Write love notes. Words are powerful and are sometimes easier expressed on paper. Fill the page with what you appreciate... your wishes and hopes and how your children are so full of potential. Leave the note on their pillow and know it will touch them deeply whether they mention the note or not.

Connecting with your children is important, not just for strengthening your family bond, but for helping them develop empathy and a healthier outlook.✲ Michele Ranard is passionate about helping families live healthier lives. 15 Tips for EASY HOLIDAY TRAVEL with your Babies and Toddlers By Blythe Lipman raveling during the holidays with young children can make any parent want to pull their hair out in frustration. Here are fifteen sure-fire ways to make traveling easy and fun. 4 Before your trip, visit the dollar store and stock up on coloring books, paint with water books, and age appropriate toys for your toddler. There is nothing better to pass the time than something new. 4 If you have a small video player, stock up on age appropriate movies for your little one. 4 If you can plan your plane schedule around your child’s nap time, your trip will be a breeze. There is nothing worse than hearing those cries and seeing those looks as you fly across the country. 4 When traveling on a plane, feed your baby a bottle and give your toddler his sippy cup during taking off and landing. This helps to keep the Eustachian tubes open so those little ears won’t hurt. 4 Toddlers sometimes have a difficult time sitting still during take-off and landing. Along with his sippy cup, play a counting game with goldfish crackers. Use two paper cups so they won’t fall. It will be fifteen minutes of fun, instead of fifteen minutes of tantrums. 4 Do not forget to take a change of clothes for yourself on the plane. Baby-food orange may not be your best color when meeting the family! 4 Bring lots of healthy snacks for your toddler, whether you are traveling by car or plane. Buying them at convenience stores can get very costly. 4 Always bring extra formula or breast-milk for your baby. One spill could result in lots of tears. 4 When staying in a hotel, bring along the

learning 2 learn

Misconceptions About Learning he school year is in full swing and, whether you are veterans or novices to being a parent of a school-aged child, there are always questions. Some school systems can cause frustration and confusion for you, as a parent so here’s what you need to know.

T

1. Schools believe that most children will come to school prepared with most, if not all, learning abilities in place and do not pre-test for these abilities. With the advance of technology and social expectations, school curriculums are sometimes more advanced than is developmentally appropriate in the early grades. Not all children are ready, no matter how bright and capable they are. But this could result in your child prematurely being labeled as ADD and/or learning disabled. 2. Reading is a man made skill and the human brain is not yet hard-wired for this process. Therefore, not all children learn to read the same way or at the same rate. That being said, most children, including those with learning disabilities, can learn to read in a year! If they do not, the wrong approaches to reading are being used and the many foundation skills critical to efficient reading are not being addressed. Learning to read is rocket science!

3. Children are taught to comprehend, but are tested based on memory. There are many different kinds of memory (and learning styles) that are neglected. It’s assumed by some that memory cannot be improved. Good thinking and intellectual abilities do not mean or imply that a child has a good memory. Memory, however, is one of the most critical skills and one of the easiest skills to train with as little as 15 minutes a day. This explains why some bright children do not perform well on achievement tests.

“The worst assumption of all is that if a child is getting good grades, he/she is not learning disabled.” 4. Your child is not paying attention— He /she must have ADD and you should look into putting him/her on medication. Not so fast please. Apparent inattentiveness is a symptom which can be caused by over 100 different factors and seems to be becoming an over diagnosed dilemma. Processing speed, poor auditory processing, visual inefficiency, medical issues, dietary/ nutritional factors and sensory-integration issues can contribute to symptoms of inattention. This is not necessarily ADD/ADHD. Many non-pharmaceutical solutions are available. Seek out the resources that fit you and do not stop until you find one. 5. Children do not have learning disabilities if they are getting good grades and 6. Some children are just unmotivated, lazy, attention seeking troublemakers. Both of these assumptions are based on symptoms that are most often born of covert, unidentified learning disabilities, which can go unrecognized into adulthood! The traditional diagnostic tests are often skewed, not comprehensive enough and not solution oriented.

26 | December 2010

The worst assumption of all is that if a child is getting good grades, he/she is not learnBy Mary Pat ing disabled. Children may actually be Correro, Ed.M. gifted and have learning disabilities which interfere with their ability to demonstrate their skills and talents. 7. I.Q. indicates my child’s intelligence. This is one of the biggest misconceptions and fallacies. The Intelligence Quotient measured today only tests a portion of the intellectual abilities necessary for successful achievement in school and is an indicator of how your child is processing information at this point in time. It’s not, and never was, an indicator of potential! Yet parents are constantly being misled. 8. The Discrepancy Model of Intelligence vs. Achievement indicates whether a child has a learning disability or not. This is also one of the biggest problems parents face in trying to identify their child’s learning needs. Children who often do have bona fide learning disabilities are often not diagnosed because of this scientifically invalid approach. 9. If my child just tries harder, he will become an independent learner. Untrue. Independent Learning is a skill, not a behavior! It requires full development of the many cognitive, neurological and perceptual processing skills; in short, the brain skills necessary for efficient learning. Tutoring of subject matter and study skills will not create an “Independent Learner” if your child has any obvious or covert learning difficulties! Parents, trust yourselves and keep searching for answers. Do not let yourself be intimidated by professional credentials. Seek out those professionals who regularly attend workshops and conferences and are knowledgeable of the most current research. Best wishes for a great school year for you and your child. ✲ Mary Pat Correro is the founder of The Center For Learning Enhancement,LLC. Give Your Children The Gift of Learning to Give By Renee Taylor Negin

C

hildren love to receive gifts. They are encouraged, especially at this time of the year, to think of themselves. Family, friends, and even strangers ask them what they would like for Christmas. They pour over toy catalogs, compiling lists. And yet, that joyous feeling is often short-lived. Once the wrappings are removed, those items are quickly abandoned to the dark recesses of the toy box. In all of the excitement, parents overlook a very important lesson that can be taught: the joy of giving. Teach kids about the world beyond themselves. Encourage children to select gifts that reflect the recipient’s taste, rather than their own. By doing so, kids start to see that other people have different likes, interests and values. Make sure that kids pay attention to the other person when gift giving; noticing the joy their gift brings is a surefire way for kids to realize that giving feels good. Use giving to generate compassion and teach humility. Many organizations collect food,

clothing and gifts for the needy at this time of year. Explain to children why some people cannot afford those things themselves, and let them help select what to give. Suggest to kids that they donate a gift they received or let them note on their “wish list” an item for donating rather than for themselves. If possible, volunteer with your kids to help sort the incoming donations, to wrap gifts or to deliver items to those who need them. Kids can see firsthand how their acts of giving affect others and it will help them be grateful for what they have. Give kids a lesson in economics. Work with them to set a budget and let them select the gifts to give. Encourage them to find the best value for the price. Kids will feel empowered by the active role they play in gift giving. Bypass consumerism by suggesting that kids give the gift of time. Older kids can offer babysitting, housekeeping or light handyman services as a gift to loved ones. Make sure they carry out their commitments, though, or the

lesson is lost. Kids of any age can spend an afternoon with a grandparent learning about their childhood or their interests. Children can teach younger kids how to play a game or spend time with them, reading books, playing or coloring. Not all children will be receptive to focusing on giving. Those who are accustomed to getting everything they want might have a hard time. But give kids the opportunity to learn to give and they just might surprise you. Start small and let kids become involved in the decision making about what to give and to whom. Kids who have a voice in the giving process are far more likely to want to give. And once the giving bug catches on, you will be surprised to find that most kids want to keep on giving. Remember that giving is a year-round activity, especially for charitable organizations but also for birthdays, a thank you or just because. Let kids practice the art of giving and watch them open their eyes to the world around them.✲

Tale Spin Stories Read-to-Me Book Reviews By Kathryn Ross, a.k.a. “Miss Kathy”

I

like a classic Christmas. You know — the ones that sparkle with the treasure of timeless tales, traditional décor, old world treats and classic images of bygone holidays. I like classics in my reading selections, too. At Christmas, I gravitate to books that are both classic and Christmas, perhaps fresh editions of old favorites. Jan Brett’s 1990 Christmas story, The Wild Christmas Reindeer, is a recent classic in children’s literature from a prolific author and illustrator of the genre. Celebrating 20 years, a beautiful new anniversary edition is now available of this delightful tale, which was one of the very first children’s books to hit the New York Times Bestseller List in its debut year. With a specialized foil cover and personal note from Ms. Brett marking the story’s 20th year, this is a lovely collector book for those of you with fond memories of it from your own childhood, as well as an introductory edition for your own children. The story is simple. Teeka is tasked with readying Santa’s reindeer for their Christmas journey. However, her approach leaves much to be desired, as the reindeer, often with comical turns, do not respond to her yelling, screaming and bossing about. After much frustration, Teeka realizes her mistake and finds that all is made right with apologies and patient teaching, nurturing her charges so they are finally ready! And just in time, too! Being ever a fan of illustration, this simple tale is enclosed within whimsical borders of artistry from Brett’s brush. Using a Ukrainian motif, in both text and appearance, each two-page spread is chock full of activity with sideline visual tales told of all the other holiday preparations happening around the central reindeer storyline. Elves working, winter wonderland celebrations, and all those classic, traditional icons of the season are a virtual feast for the eyes, keeping one entranced for hours in the careful study of each page. This “border” effect is a Brett trademark found in many of her books – any one or more of which make beautiful Christmas gifts for children of all ages.

!! THEME: Christmas Classic! BOOK: The Wild Christmas Reindeer AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Jan Brett EAN: 9780399221927

Follow-up Activity: Each page presents story starters that can take your imagination in any number of directions. Have a family story night where everyone contributes a part of a new story inspired by some of the border motifs in The Wild Christmas Reindeer. Challenge the kids to draw their own Brett border with each square telling another part of the story. Perhaps you can create your own literary Christmas classic! Certainly, this will produce cherished Christmas memories.✲ Kathryn Ross is a professional storyteller celebrating the love of learning and literacy with children of all ages. She hosts Tale Spin Stories every Tuesday for preschoolers at the Cumberland Mall in Vineland. To learn more about Miss Kathy programs from Pageant Wagon Productions, visit www.pwpstorytellers.com.

It’s a different world outside of school.

For students with disabilities, life after school can be a challenge. Leaving the secure environment of a school setting can be difficult— unless they have been well prepared, as each of our students are. Our students engage in meaningful activities to ready them for the outside world. With community-based instruction, they learn to do things like shop in an actual grocery store and make transactions in a real bank. Our vocational training programs allow them to perform simulated job duties, receive training for special programs, or work in an actual job. Our schools deliver unparalleled services for students with special needs. New Jersey Department of Education certified special education teachers, licensed therapists and counselors provide expert, advanced instruction and support … along with plenty of smiles. These unique services are provided at NO COST for families. Find out if private special education is the right fit for your child. Our staff can help answer your questions. To find out more about what programs may be right for your child, call us at

And we make sure your child is ready for it.
