Dear Readers,

N

ot a creature was stirring, not even a mouse…” Maybe Clement C. Moore’s words ring true when holiday preparations are complete -presents wrapped, festive food ready and waiting to be eaten, and everyone tucked in their beds on a cold winter night, but the holiday season is rarely a quiet affair. Even if you don’t celebrate any December holidays, with over a week of vacation for school-aged children, you may consider traveling on vacation or spending your days visiting friends and relatives or taking day trips. Hopefully, the articles in our December issue will help you keep things calm and in perspective at this harried time of year. Take a look at Christi Fox’s article, “Festive Family Fun,” which spotlights simple seasonal activities that won’t strain the budget or interrupt the holiday flow. Reading about creating homemade dough ornaments causes me to reminisce about ones we made as children. My mom still has the brightly painted, bulky skier, too heavy for its yarn, which we carefully propped up against an evergreen branch, hoping it wouldn’t collapse. One tradition many families honor is packing into the car and taking a drive to enjoy the light displays – a tradition that brings the family together and is inexpensive and fun for everyone. My husband and I pick a weekend night in December and bring coffee, cocoa and the kids along for an enlightening ride. Before you embark on any road trip this month, read Dolores Hoffman’s article, “Travel Jingling All the Way.” Minimize stress, streamline your trip and maximize

on fun and adventure. No matter how far you may roam, you’ll find travel tips that will “keep you jolly during the holiday travel season.” Also, read her accompanying article, “Get Your Family’s Piece of Pie Without the Holiday Rush” for hints on dividing holidays among the in-laws without severing ties and by keeping the peace. Expectations run high to capture your kids in a family photo. It could be for long-distance loved ones or just yourself, for cherishing those precious moments. Unfortunately, kids don’t always cooperate for family photos. When posting on Facebook or sending out holiday cards, you want the perfect family photo to show what happy, lovely, well-adjusted children you have. Is it possible?!? Discover in Samantha Gill’s article, “Take Your Kids’ Best Holiday Shots,” how she learned by trial-and-error to survive family photo time with her girls. So pull up a chair when the kids are all snug in their beds to read what we have in store this month including our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Take this moment to draw in a deep breath and reflect on all the good things you’ve been offered this year and the wonderful family and friends you have. Savor the holiday season and all its little joys. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from our families to yours!✲ Your friend and fellow MOM, M.B.

Lots of Lists...Beyond Gifts!

T

his is definitely the time of year when people make lists -- wish lists. But what about other kinds of lists can you make with the kids? The Top Three Things I did on Thanksgiving Weekend … or …. My Favorite Toys List … or … What I Liked Best about My Trip to Aunt Francyn’s or Aunt Jayne’s house! The best part of making lists is that they’re reminders for the future … reminders to jog your memory years from now. Wouldn’t it be great to keep a Toy List each year and then when your child is, let’s say, 20, he can look back and remember all those great toys he used to have? I had a book called “My Private Life” that I filled in with my favorite movies of a specific year, my favorite clothes. I don’t think it goes back as far as my Poodle Skirt but that would be fun to know what year I had one! Try it with the kids … even while sitting at the doctor’s office or waiting for food at a restaurant to “kill” time. But be sure you save these lists. Maybe keep a folder at home called “Ryan’s Lists” and read them every now and then. Not only a South Jersey Mom, Sharla Feldscher is a proud South Jersey Grandmom (Grammy, as she prefers to be called). The author of six books on creative ideas to do with young children, including two KIDFUN Activity Books published by HarperCollins, she has a blog at www.kidfunandmore.com with more easy-to-do KIDFUN ideas. Sharla has her own public relations business in Philadelphia. A real kid-believer, she began her career as the first PR Director of the Please Touch Museum and started her own business with Sesame Place as her first account, representing the park for 26 years.

Get Your Family’s Piece of Pie Without the Holiday Rush

T

he holiday season can be a stressful time for all of us. Trying to visit with your family members during this time can add to the stress, especially if you and your spouse have a blended family and end up rushing from home to home, not enjoying the holiday. Balancing the time between in-laws can seem almost impossible. Here are a few ways to divide your time between families during the holidays. Alternate Holidays You may want to think about alternating the holidays. One year you can spend Christmas with one side of your family and Thanksgiving with the other. Then the next year you can switch holidays. Let both families know your plans well in advance so they can plan accordingly. The benefit: You won’t have to rush around, and you’ll be able to settle in and enjoy your visit. Being at one place the entire time also means you don’t have to check your watch the whole day worried about being late to other holiday parties. This works especially 6 | December 2012

well if your families live far apart. If your families live close together, but have their own holiday traditions, it’s definitely doable to have dinner with one family and dessert with the other without stressing yourself out. Many people use Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve to visit between family members. I know one woman who gets together with her Aunts and Uncles on Black Friday for shopping and leftovers. It gives you more flexibility when planning and makes the actual holiday less hectic. Stay Home One of the easiest options is to host the holiday at your home and invite both families. This way you see everyone at the same time, provided both families get along. If you meet opposition from your relatives who expect everyone at their house, spend most of the day at home with a visit later. After my husband and I had our daughter, we decided it was time to start our own tradition by staying home on Christmas Day until early evening, then going to my in-laws for dessert. It gives us valuable

family time. We get to stay in our pajamas and play with toys all day, but we don’t miss out on the family traditions our other relatives cherish. Open House Extend an invitation for an open house where family members and friends can come and visit on their own scheduled time. It takes the pressure off them and you don’t have to worry about fussing in the kitchen all day. Just keep a few appetizers and desserts on the table for anyone who’s hungry. It’s less formal and more welcoming than an elaborate meal. You’re never going to make everyone happy, and it definitely gets more complicated once you have kids. This may mean that you can’t see everyone on the same day, but everyone will learn to adjust to the new holiday schedule. Who knows? Maybe new traditions will be born. Whatever you decide to do, remember the most important thing is for you to spend time with your family and enjoy the holiday season.✲ Visit our website and sign up for our e-newsletter

Festive Family Fun

T

By Christi Fox

is the season for strung lights and mugs of hot cocoa; knit hats and chapped faces; and snuggling under a blanket near a crackling fire. The sights and smells of the holiday season are a delight to both children and parents and there’s no better time for family bonding than the wonderland of winter and the approaching holidays. One fun activity that will last through years to come is to have your child make homemade ornaments. While these can be made from just about anything, one great idea is to use salt dough which requires very little ingredients. All you need is salt, flour and a little water. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees and place a rack in the middle of the oven. Mix into a dough and then use cookie cutters to cut out patterns. Place the ornaments on a parchment-covered cookie sheet and bake for three hours for small ornaments and four hours for larger ornaments, turning the larger ornaments every thirty minutes to evenly bake. Once they’re done, your child can paint them to their liking. These also make great gifts to grandparents and other loved ones that they’ll cherish forever. While it’s fun to stay warm and cozy inside on a cold winter evening, a family drive to look at Christmas lights is a favorite past time to most but imagine how excited your little one would be to take a stroll through a fantastic lights display while also visiting with Santa. Historical towns are

8 | December 2012

notorious for their lights displays as well as Christmas parades, tree lightings and other holiday events. To take advantage of such events, you can visit websites such as grovechronicle.wordpress.com and Funnewjersey. com. Let’s not forget that a big hill in the neighborhood and a fresh blanket of snow make for an amazingly fun sled ride. This is not only fun for kids but for parents as well. If you don’t have sleds, you can make them using a little bit of duct tape and some cardboard. You can visit www. ehow.com for full instructions. Just remember safety and make sure that the area is clear of trees and other objects. What about those lovely Christmas cards of sleigh rides through a beautiful landscape? You can capture this experience in a day trip to the beautiful Dutch Country. Think of how excited your little one would be to be led by horses through the snow with the sound of jingle bells chiming in their ears. You can visit www.padutchcountry.com for more information. It’s never too late to start holiday traditions. Not only do they bring back a little of the family values but they’ll also create fond memories that will last a lifetime.✲

Ask the Party Planner By Stacy McGuigan

Q.

How do you suggest to the parents, in a nice way, that this is a drop-off party? Melissa, N. Hanover

A.

Good question. Many parents think that when their child has been invited to a party that they can stay and socialize as well, and that’s not the case in many situations. As the host, if the party you’re giving your child is just for children, make sure that you mark that on the invitation. Use this phrase as an example: “Parents, pick-up time is 9pm.” When they RSVP, make sure to remind them of the pickup time again. Just remember that it’s never wrong to be honest and forthcoming with your party intentions. I’m sure that in most cases the adult will appreciate “knowing”.

Q.

Is it ok to take siblings young/old to birthday parties? Elsa, Voorhees

A.

Adding an extra guest or two may not seem like a lot to a person but to the host who has planned on a certain number of attendees, it can and will add undue stress to their already busy day. Unless specifically invited by the host, siblings shouldn’t attend a party that he/she wasn’t personally invited to. Shine Light on Tweens & Smoking By Dolores Hoffman Teens think they’ll live forever. Looks are very important at this age. If you mention that their hair will smell, and their teeth may turn yellow, they’ll be more likely to turn down a cigarette when offered one. Lead by Example Trying to convince teenagers to stop smoking is much harder if their parents smoke. Leading by example is one of the most effective ways to help teens avoid smoking in the future. Parents have a greater impact than they think when it comes to keeping their teen from smoking. If you happen to be a smoker, this is the best time to quit. Act as a role model. You can even encourage your teen to help you kick the habit.

T

alking with your tween about smoking is more important than ever. Each day 6,000 children under the age of 18 start smoking. Of those, 2,000 will keep smoking. Unfortunately, when our teens hear these statistics, they don’t think it will affect them. If you want to keep your tween from lighting up, here’s what you should do. Talk to Them Talking about it is the best way to keep your tween from smoking; preferably you should have many over the course of several years, starting at the age of 5 or 6. For example, if your child finds a cigarette on the ground, don’t just tell them that it’s trash, explain how cigarettes can harm the body. Casual conversa-

tions work best and can take place anywhere, whether it’s at the dinner table, in the car or at a restaurant. Make Household Rules Clear Be sure to tell your teen that smoking and drugs aren’t allowed. Teens whose parents set the firmest smoking restrictions tend to smoke less than teens whose parents don’t convey their views against smoking. Let them know the consequences if they choose to smoke. Appeal to Their “Vain” Side Remind your teen that smoking is dirty and smelly. Bad breath and wrinkles are just a few drawbacks. They aren’t interested in hearing that smoking causes cancer and heart disease.

Teach Them to Say “No” Prepare your child before it happens. Have a discussion with your kids about how they can say “no” if they’re offered a cigarette. Tell them that they can simply refuse when offered or express their opposition to smoking. Although they may roll their eyes, role-play with your teen to help them feel more comfortable about their plan of action. Knowing how to say to no to smoking will give them the self-confidence to follow through. Children with self-confidence are more protected against peer pressure, so remember to congratulate them on their accomplishments and encourage them when they make wise choices. Be prepared to answer questions on whether or not you’ve ever smoked. It’s OK to admit that you did but be sure to tell them that it was a mistake and you know that they’ll make better decisions when it comes to smoking. Making an effort to talk to your teen about overall healthy living is your best weapon against smoking.✲

Mend Lives by Mentoring By Deb McCarson

M

entoring has become increasingly popular over the last decade. According to a study published in 2011 by the Association for Psychological Science, there are more than 5000 mentoring programs serving some 3,000,000 youths in the United States. The advancement of these programs, mainly fueled by funding and growth initiatives set by government and non-profit organizations, suggests that there’s a need for adult support and intervention during childhood. The APS study results show that mentoring “improves outcomes across behavioral, social, emotional, and academic domains of young people’s development.” The abundance of mentoring programs available for study provides a wealth of data for mentoring advocates. This analysis of mentoring programs has enabled program developers to perfect the mentoring process. The most effective mentoring programs provide support for their mentors. Rob Jakubowski, CEO of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties, stresses the importance of mentor support and offers it as one reason the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program is so successful. “We provide training and ongoing support for our mentors; we are there right along with them throughout the duration of their commitment.” Big Brothers and Big Sisters is a widely recognized and well-respected mentoring organization. Research shows that after eighteen months of spending time with their “bigs,” little brothers and little sisters were: • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol • 52% less likely to skip school • 37% less likely to skip a class • 33% less likely to hit someone It isn’t just the mentees who benefit from mentoring programs. Mentors experience intense gratification when they realize they’ve helped change someone’s life. Rob says his mentors confirm that being a mentor “is the best thing they’ve ever done.” “Bigs” help change the lives of their “littles” by “changing their perspective on what the world can offer.” Whether they spend time playing ball, going to a concert or just hanging out, mentors have the opportunity to provide advice and inspiration. Most mentoring programs ask for a yearlong commitment, either once a week or a few times per month. Mentors and mentees are matched according to location, availability and similarity of interests. While a mentoring relationship typically consists of a caring and meaningful relationship between a youth and a nonparental adult, 12 | December 2012

mentoring opportunities are available for entire families as well. Family mentors can serve as advisors to families in crisis, helping find solutions to family challenges. June Bretz, Executive Director for the Volunteer Center of Gloucester County, says there are many such family mentoring programs available in our area. “Family mentoring offers the support and guidance needed to help families develop strengths and opportunities, define and achieve goals, and celebrate successes. Potential mentors can call The Volunteer Center, and we will connect them with the agency which best fits their talents and preferences.”✲

Party with Your Favorite Flyers and Family:

The Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival

Y

By M.B. Sanok

ou may think it’s all glamour, glitz, fame and fortune for the wives of professional athletes. Although there are perks, don’t think that the wives of the Philadelphia Flyers simply rest on their laurels – they work hard every year raising millions of dollars for hundreds of charities through a special and spectacular one-day event, the Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival. The Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival provides the opportunity for fans to get up close and personal with their favorite Flyer, present or alumni. Various amusements, games and contests; photo and autograph opportunities; and auctions on coveted Flyers’ swag and memorabilia populate the day – all beside the players you love to watch! Monies made from the event benefit several diverse charities in the Delaware Valley – many chosen personally by the Flyers’ and their mates. For instance, defenseman Braydon Coburn and his wife Nadine work closely with the charity PAWS, a Philadelphia-based animal rescue organization. A network of women, with the help of Comcast-Spectacor employees, run the popular and successful event that’s been held for 35 years so far. Nadine Coburn, who chairs the charity event, says that once your husband or boyfriend becomes a Flyer, you automatically can contribute and work on the event. Even the children of the Flyers get involved. Throughout the year, the Flyers’ wives and girlfriends work tirelessly on the event. Nadine says, “We start planning for next year the minute it’s over.” Charities go through an “application process” to ensure that they are a “registered charity.” Nadine says that “if a charity wants to be involved, just call.” Not only do the Wives raise money through the carnival, they also fundraise through other means. They host a “number of promotions months before,” says Nadine who mentions the Nicole Miller Fashion 14 | December 2012

Show they organized last year for the first time, and also ”sales at home games of the mystery puck.” Before the climactic carnival, these events garner more charitable contributions. Organizations like the March of Dimes, Ronald McDonald House, PAWS and countless other worthy non-profits including heart health, stroke, cancer awareness and youth organizations benefit. Their mission is “always give back to local charities [benefiting] kids, families and women,” says Nadine. For a large and successful sports fundraiser like this one, the Flyers’ Wives receive nothing but praise, and the “charities are thrilled” by the results. “[The Flyers are] happy to see their fans, and [the fans] realize they’re ordinary guys just like everyone else,” says Nadine. She continues that they’ve “mastered [the carnival] after 35 years…and wouldn’t change anything” about it. Past years’ carnival activities, according to www.flyerscarnival.com, include interactive video games with the athletes; Shot-on-Goal where you can take your own goal shot; the Dunk Tank where you can dunk a player or coach; and memorable photo opportunities with players, coaches and the Stanley Cup. Rub elbows with your favorite players and alumni while you participate in auctions on team gear and team experiences; valuable prizes; and chances to buy Mystery Bags filled with surprise Flyers’ swag. This family-friendly event also boasts kid favorites like a bounce house, caricaturists, face painters, balloon artists, magicians; and musical entertainment for everyone. And every penny goes directly to the hundreds of charities who depend on this wonderful event. Spend the day hanging out with your favorite Flyers while supporting many worthwhile charities. The 2013 Flyers Wives Fight for Life Carnival is held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. ur children rub shoulders with people from different backgrounds on an almost daily basis. Being the curious creatures they are, all kinds of questions pop up like: How come Jason’s father has an accent? What is Matilda’s mother wearing? Who is the Easter Bunny? By introducing our children to different cultures, we help them accept the ethnic and religious diversity within our community while teaching them valuable interpersonal skills. Books are an excellent place to start familiarizing your family with the fascinating traditions of other cultures. Your local library is filled with books on countries from Abyssinia to Zimbabwe as well as books on religions and languages. Folktales, games and crafts are an entertaining way to enrich your children’s experiences of other cultures. During car rides or at dinner, family members can take turns saying simple greetings in a foreign language while the others try to guess the language and the phrase. How about a taste bud adventure? Eat out at an Indian or Greek restaurant. Do you have picky eaters? No problem - many of these restaurants have a children’s menu so while they’re eating familiar food, you can coax them to try a delicious tidbit from your plate. Try out new recipes at home. Let your little ones help you. While measuring ingredients, they’ll absorb aromas as you blend herbs and spices used in cultural dishes. Many cities have ethnic neighborhoods like Chinatown or Little Italy. Contained within a few city blocks, these districts are a great place to shop for recipe ingredients, traditional clothing,

music and art while soaking in the sights, sounds and smells of that culture. Why not spice up a neighborhood block party by asking everyone to contribute a dish or music from a particular culture? Friends and neighbors are a good source of information on holidays or customs your children are curious about. Knowing the history behind holidays different from our own gives us a broader world view and an appreciation for multi-cultural traditions. Weekends are a great time to take in a cultural festival. With their parades, marching bands, dancing, live music, national costumes, games and food, festivals are a treat for the whole family. Check your local newspaper for a Greek, German, or Polish festival near you. Who knows? You might discover a talent for the bouzouki or the polka. Zumba is a fun way for your family to broaden their music and dancing horizons. Take a class or buy a DVD for some inhome family fitness fun. Some cultures share the same holidays as we do but celebrate them in a slightly different way. Christmas in New Zealand, for instance, falls during their summer, so families there might enjoy a barbeque on the beach while we enjoy a white Christmas. Open up your family’s mind by celebrating different cultures. You’ll discover how much we have in common and that it’s not such a big world after all.✲

Take Your Kids’ Best Holiday Shots By Samantha Gill

I

remember when I was single I sent out good old plain Christmas cards. My hardest decision was picking which card was the funniest to send to everyone that year. Once I was married, pre-kids, we would do a “married” Christmas card. You know picture of wife + husband + dog = cute Christmas card. Then along comes children… Take 1, 2009: My first experience as a mother handling Christmas pictures was with my firstborn, Audrey; she was about 10 months old. I made the appointment at 11am. However, I didn’t realize that appointment time really wasn’t her appointment time. It’s a ruse because the 9 families that were before you all went overtime trying to get their kids to cooperate. So I sat with Audrey for a good hour which went over like a lead balloon. By the time our real session started, I realized why every time I walked by the picture place in the mall I would always see parents sweating or grabbing their foreheads while grimacing. Take 2, 2010: My second child, Adalynne (Addie), was born in October of the following year. Since I ‘learned’ from the previous year, I was more prepared as far as logistics went. But I wasn’t prepared for two children under the age of two! Let the sweating begin. Things I thought to myself: A) Why am I sweating, and why didn’t I wear short sleeves? B) Why won’t Addie keep on her shoes? And C) Wasn’t this supposed to be fun? Take 3, 2011: I had two children under the age of 3, so I was ready. I could have tied a bandana around my forehead like those people who get ready for the ‘Running of the Bulls.’ I planned ahead, and we successfully got a picture of the girls smiling and with all of their clothes on. More importantly, no one sweated or went in time-out. So without further ado, here are some tips to help you, too, survive Christmas photos: Timing is Everything!: Ask for the first appointment of the day. This will alleviate time waiting. If you’re the first appointment of the day and arrive right before they open, you’ll be seen right away, and they’ll process the pictures for you to look at right away. All good stuff! Bring Reinforcements: Reinforcements are in the form of other adult human beings. This could be your spouse, grandparent, etc. Extra hands are key to help chase a runaway toddler, put a shoe back on, etc. Also, bring a change of clothes that are comfortable for the kids to change into after the photos are taken. Be sure to bring things to entertain the kids: snacks, drinks, coloring books, etc. Finally, be sure that you, the parent, wear sneakers and short sleeves! (Really!) Rewards: Okay, admit it, these pictures are really for the parents, not the children. We’re so proud of our kids and want our friends and family to see just how cute we already know they are! So once the kids make it through the torture of posing and carrying on, reward them. If you’re in the mall, maybe have an ice cream cone or ride the merry-go-round. So in the end, “Take 3” went off almost without issue. I promised my oldest daughter that she could ride the merry-go-round in the mall once we were done. What I didn’t know was it didn’t open until noon! Note to self for “Take 4, 2012”: before you make your kids promises, Google merry-go-round times! Merry Christmas!✲ Visit our website and sign up for our e-newsletter

Travel Jingling All The Way By Dolores Hoffman

A

nyone who has traveled during the holidays will no doubt have a horror story or two to tell you about how stressful it can be. Whether it’s a flight delay, bad weather while driving or answering the age old question, “Are we there yet?”, you need to be prepared. Planning ahead can lead to a successful trip and a more enjoyable holiday for everyone. Here are a few tips to keep you jolly during the holiday travel season. Travel Hints: v If You Drive Packing the car at least a day ahead and leaving without stressful moments will set the tone for the whole trip. It’s also a good idea to travel when the kids are still asleep. This doesn’t have to be limited to the early morning hours. Put the kids in pajamas or comfortable clothes and leave late in the day. Bring blankets, pillows and remember a sun visor for the backseat. Be sure to plan an alternate route especially if it’s snowy or icy. When driving, allow about 20 minutes per stop. It will give you a much needed break, and the kids will have the chance to use some of that pent-up energy.

22 | December 2012

If you have time, plan out some interesting sights along the route, and if you have a car with a built-in DVD player, bring their favorite collection of DVDs so they have lots to choose from. Before a long car ride, my sister visits the dollar section at Target and finds games and toys for traveling. She gives a bag to each of her kids. It provides hours of entertainment. v If You Fly If you’re flying, pack items to keep the kids occupied (books, travel games or a portable DVD player will keep them entertained through the trip). Make sure you pack the power cords to these electronic items in your carry-on bag. There are plenty of electrical outlets in the airport in case your flight gets delayed. In that same bag, pack some snacks. Don’t worry about packing water; you can get that before you board the plane. Wear comfortable shoes to ensure that security will be a breeze. A few items to have on hand include gum for little ears to prevent them from popping on take-off and a blanket or jacket because it always gets chilly on the plane.

v Must–Have Items Whether you drive or fly, be sure you have tissues and wipes on hand as well as paper and crayons. An inexpensive pair of binoculars is always fun for the kids to use while on the road. Remember, only give them a few fun things at a time, especially if the trip is a long one. v Don’t forget about day trips Let’s face it -- with gas prices at an all-time high, many families are opting to stay home for the holidays. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your time off. Plan a day trip or two. There are a lot of options out there for cold climates. The aquarium is a good place to start. Many indoor water parks and fun parks have cropped up all over and let’s not forget the museums and theatres. Try to make the most of your time off no matter how close to home you may be. Remember, road trips can be fun and accomplished with little stress. Whether you travel far or stay close to home, one of the greatest gifts of the holiday season is being together with loved ones. Why Bank Cord Blood? By Dr. Trina L. Gipson-Jones Why Bank Cord Blood? Bringing a child into the world is a true miracle. During this time of hope and transition, families make many decisions such as selection of the child’s name, type of birthing experience (i.e., natural, water or medicated), the type of childcare facility, or whether to use childcare, to name a few. What about deciding if you’ll store your child’s umbilical cord blood? This article provides general information about cord blood banking.

heal many chronic diseases such as sickle cell anemia and certain blood cancers. Babies’ stem cells are more desirable than older adult stem cells because they’re versatile and haven’t been altered by environmental influences.

Importance of Cord Blood In the past, umbilical cord stem cells were discarded, and their potential healing benefits went untapped. Today moms can donate cord blood to help save another child’s life or store it for sibling use. Mothers-to-be need to talk with their health care provider between their 28th and 34th week of pregnancy to discuss the donor criteria. Cord blood is collected from the placenta after birth. It contains stem cells which can begin the healing process in injured body cells and tissue. These stem cells may be able to

Cord Blood Donation Moms can donate cord blood to a public cord blood bank at no cost. This blood is provided to anyone in need who is a match (doesn’t need to be an exact match). While perfect matching isn’t required, tissue types are inherited; therefore, patients are more compatible with persons from their own heritage. For this reason, New Jersey Community Blood Services (NJCBS) is stressing cord blood donation education and recruitment within minority communities.

Collection A health care professional collects the blood from the cord and placenta after the birth of the baby. Cord blood collection poses no threat to the mother or the child and neither feels pain during the procedure.

Private blood banking is another option for moms. Privately stored cord blood could be a family resource when siblings are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. Prices range from $1,990 to $2,200 with some storage fees included. Storage fees can range between $125 to $175 per year.✲

Cherish These Christmas Cookies! By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

I

personally think this is a favorite time of year for folks to bake goodies. There are many people I know who don’t usually bake throughout the year but will do so during the Christmas season. There’s just something special about this time of the year that makes us want to dust off the cookie cutters and bring out the rolling pin. And talking about cookies, in this column I’m sharing three delicious recipes that you can make with the children in your life. My niece Christina and I enjoy baking up batches of Christmas cookies together every year. I so cherish our time together in the kitchen -- we share laughs and conversation, along with the baking and clean up! I hope that you enjoy this “SCENTsational” season with your loved ones as well, and happy baking to all and to all a blessed and Merry Christmas!

Pizzelle Cookies

6 eggs 1 1/2 cups raw or granulated sugar 1 cup butter, melted, and slightly cooled 2 tsp. anise flavoring or pure vanilla extract 3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 4 tsp. baking powder In a large bowl; whisk eggs and sugar until smooth. Add butter, and anise or vanilla extract, mix well. Add flour and baking powder into the wet ingredients, stirring until well blended (dough will be sticky). Brush a little butter onto the pizzelle cooking surfaces, then preheat pizzelle maker or iron. Drop batter by tablespoonful onto pizzelle maker, close the iron and cook according to manufacturer’s instructions, (takes approximately 30 – 40 seconds for cookies to cook). Allow pizzelle’s to cool on wire racks, then store in airtight containers. Makes 40 – 50 pizzelles.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. sea salt 2 sticks butter, softened 3/4 cup raw or granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 (12 oz.) package) semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 375°. In a bowl combine flour, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, beat butter, raw sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually stir the flour mixture into the wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips and drop dough by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased or parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Bake cookies for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for 2 minutes then remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

Italian Zuccarini Cookies

2 sticks butter, softened 1 1/2 cup raw or granulated sugar 6 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1 1/2 tsp. anise flavoring 4 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 5 tsp. non-aluminum baking powder Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar with an electric mixer. Beat in one egg at a time. Add milk and anise to the mixture. Stir in the flour and baking powder. Mix just until dough comes together. Use a spoon or cookie dough scoop to drop batter 2 inches apart onto a cookie sheet greased with non-stick cooking spray or lined with parchment paper. Bake until cookies are light brown in color (approximately 12 to 15 minutes.) Cool cookies on racks. Once completely cooled, glaze the cookie tops (see recipe).

Glaze

1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/4 tsp. anise flavoring 1 tsp. of water at a time In a small bowl mix together sugar and anise, add water a little at a time to form a smooth but not too thin glaze. Spread glaze onto cooled cookies and decorate with colored sugar, jimmies, small decorative or holidaythemed candies. Let cool for an hour or more before storing in an airtight container. As always, Bon Appetit!
