Dear Readers, A s I write this February Editor’s Letter, I’m dressed in my blinding pink-and-green, fleece Muppets pajama bottoms and a ratty, bleach-stained, mismatched sweatshirt, notebook and pen in hand, low drone of a football game on TV. My husband snores, head slumped over with hood of sweatshirt up wrapped in a fuzzy afghan. Did I mention that it’s only 9pm? February marks our 18th year together – soon-to-be 14 years of wedded bliss. Is this all there is? I wonder if life can get any better than this. Believe me, I’m very happy to be married to my husband who’s my best friend and never fails to make me laugh, even when he’s making me mad. However, the scenario is not exactly romantic. Maybe it’s time to spice things up? Date Night remains a distant memory – I recall a Halloween party? Despite the fact we have a highly qualified sitter in my mother-in-law, with work schedules, kids’ activities and general home and hearth responsibilities, dates get lost in the shuffle. We spend hours here and there together, but it’s at the house or with the kids, glances exchanged across the dinner table or a quick squeeze of the hand. We do eat dessert after the kids go to bed and catch a funny show, but it’s not the marathons of togetherness we used to have. We’ve never attempted to go away for a night or two much less a romantic couples’ vacation, but our Business Spotlight, “Sun, Sand and Savings – Barceló Maya Palace Deluxe Resort,” may change our minds and yours, too. It’s a spectacular, all-inclusive resort in Mexico with plenty to do with or without your children. Someday, I keep telling myself we’ll take a chance and schedule a vaca-

tion without the kids; for now, though, I’m happy to be in their company and love to go on vacations with them, and this is definitely a contender. I’ll enjoy my time with them now until they’re grown up and had enough of mom and dad! If you’re sticking close to home, why not take a look at Passion Professor Patricia Mooneyham’s article “45 Shades of Valentine’s Day” for romantic ideas and exciting suggestions about how to spice up your relationship? Making time for alone time with your partner will create and strengthen the bonds between you that may have been sidetracked with the care of kids and life’s many other busy aspects. Patricia brings up an excellent point that showing your children that healthy relationships require quality time alone now and then will help them with their own future relationships. Read it and see what you think! Thanks to all who joined us for our 3rd annual Camp Expo in January! Stay tuned for future Expo information – visit our website www.southjerseymom.com or our Facebook page www.facebook. com/SouthJerseyMOM for details and updates. Your friend & fellow MOM, MB✲

Love Letters S

ome of you may remember that I write letters to my grandchildren.Yep, love letters. And, nope, they can’t read them. But they’re here in my computer and in their parents’, just to be safe. Hopefully, one day they’ll read them and learn about all the great things we did together and also gain historic information about their lives. You know, the first time they ate cereal, walked, talked, etc. But what a wonderful reversal I had this week! Ryan dictated a love letter to me. It was an e-mail from her mom. I’m not sure how it came to be but reading…”I love you in my heart. You are the best Grammy in the whole world”… is, well, the greatest gift I could get! In fact, I blew it up on the computer and put a photo of Ryan and me beneath it, printed it out and it’s hanging on my office door. Okay, we all know I’m sentimental. Of course, this is a wordy way to suggest you encourage your kids to write (dictate) love letters to the special people in their lives…especially with Valentine’s Day coming up. Celebrate

Black History Every Day By Dr. Kelly N. Moore children to learn that not just one group built this nation but many did. Our children are growing up in an unprecedented time. My children were both born in the years that Barack Obama was elected as the President. They have no idea how inconceivable the thought of a Black US President was for so many African-Americans in the country going back centuries. The Black scholars, scientists, abolitionists, politicians, educators, writers and entertainers that are left out of the history books don’t have to remain unknown. We as parents can teach our kids that Black history is American history -- all of our history.

C

ould you imagine our world without the traffic light or an electric elevator? Or open heart surgery? What about the ironing board or the fire escape ladder? These and many other inventions and procedures were created and/or started by innovative African-Americans. Every February, many schools will devote extra time in their curricula to study and recognize Black History Month. But why is it so important? And why just one month? For many students, the role of African-Americans in the history of the US has been narrowed to focus on recognizable names and faces like Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks. I can remember as a young student that the only reference to Blacks in the birth of this nation were a brief reference to slavery, a mention of Cripus Attucks, and then later references to the Civil Rights Movement and the aforementioned names. Many teachers and parents have to fill in the blanks –literally -- to reveal the great contributions made by innovative, creative and courageous African-Americans. Many of these history makers reached these innovative milestones during times when they were marginalized, oppressed and living in a world many of our children today couldn’t possibly imagine. Black History is important because it allows us as parents, regardless of our ethnicity, to teach ourselves and our children about the contributions made by African-Americans throughout the history of this country. Unfortunately, so much of the history books save the involvement of Blacks for the margins or insets, and this is why it’s important for

6 | February 2014

Here are a few ideas of how to teach your children learn more about Black history all year long: w Visit the African-American Museum in Philadelphia w Visit websites like familyeducation.com and nickjr.com for fun ideas on how to teach younger children about famous African-Americans in history w Read the great poem by Langston Hughes, “I, Too, Sing America” and discuss it with your child. w Read the “I Have a Dream” speech with your children and discuss what Dr. King was hoping for w Check out your local paper to find out about upcoming events such as plays or library events that will focus on black history during the month of February w In addition to the African-American Museum, Philadelphia is rich with historic sites, events and exhibits in various museums that make for fun and educational day trips for kids (e,g, the National Constitution Center, the African-American art collection at the Art Museum, etc.) Though most think of Black History as a month-long acknowledgement of achievements of famous African-Americans, there are ways that we can fill in the gaps of school texts and educate them all year long about the many sacrifices, the courage and resilience African-Americans have endured and shown throughout history, and how we’re still benefitting from their countless contributions in all facets of our lives today. You can start tomorrow on the way to school and say “Do you know who invented the stoplight?”✲

An Open Letter to the Tooth Fairy–Tips to Help You in 2014… By Samantha Gill

Dear Tooth Fairy,

I thought I would write you this letter to help give you some tips. I know that you’ve been in this business for a LONG time; however, I also know that once you’ve been doing something for a while things can get stale. I know, I know… it’s not easy being the Tooth Fairy. The Elf on the Shelf only has to appear for a month and a half. Santa and the Easter Bunny only ONE night! The Tooth Fairy has to work 365 days a year! Quite a gig! So here are some 2014 ideas to help you be the best Tooth Fairy you can be! 1.) Make it Sparkle! You know those cans of glitter hairspray you see at the store, and you think to yourself, “Why in the WORLD would anyone want to use that on their hair?!” Well, instead, you can save on glitter, and spray all of your magical Tooth Fairy money with it. When you put a glittery dollar or two in place of a tooth, that’s pretty “fairy-like” and almost magical. 2.) Leave a Receipt: Wouldn’t hurt in this day and age to leave a receipt -- after all, our kids are pretty savvy. It could even have a bar code at the bottom and say “customer copy”… very cute….

3.) .com – I’m sure you’re already aware, but our generation is all about proof and computers… our kids are smart. Did you know you can prove to them that you REALLY DID arrive!? I know… so crazy... but true… There’s this website: toothfairy.capturethemagic.com, and it will provide the kids with a picture of you putting the tooth under their pillow! It’s almost like fairy-surveillance! 4.) Don’t Hurt Yourself: When I was a kid, my tooth was put in a handkerchief and put under my pillow. I’m sure this was incredibly inconvenient. I mean it’s completely reasonable to hang a tooth fairy pillow on the end of their bed or placed on their bedside table to help not disturb any children while they’re sleeping… Almost like a drive-through… 5.) Personalize: With all of that technology and speediness being said, it’s still nice to add a bit of personalization to it…A note with something very specific (and sprayed with glitter, too) is awesome. “Dear Elizabeth, I can’t believe your tooth came out while eating a waffle! You love waffles! So do I! You’re such a good listener for your Mommy -- keep up the good work. xo The Tooth Fairy.” And just remember, no matter what, it’s the magic that counts. The thought that you’re believed in and that the kids are excited…that’s all that matters!✲

Relieve the “Dentist-Shy” Child –

Bring Them to Holdbrook Pediatric Dental, LLC

M

By BonnieAnne Henderson & Jeanine Ruffo

om, are you the parent of an anxious or “Dentist-Shy” child? Does the anxiety of taking your child to the dentist keep you up at night? If so, you’re not alone. Many parents who walk through our doors with their children for the first time share that same sentiment. We are Holdbrook Pediatric Dental,LLC, a premier, state-of-the-art dental facility with a small neighborhood dentist feel. When you walk into our office, you’ll be greeted with a warm smile and a friendly face. In our comfortable waiting room, there’s a “mini-arcade” with X-boxes and Apple computers to delight and entertain your children. We also have coloring books and various other toys to keep them busy and relaxed while awaiting their appointments. When it’s time to be seen, you and your child will be taken back to our hygiene bay. There your youngster will be treated to a child-themed movie on one of our ceiling-mounted HDTV’s while having his/her teeth cleaned and checked by one of our friendly, highly trained hygienists. In the event that your youngster needs further dental procedures, we’ll be happy to schedule him/her for another appointment. On your return visit, your child will be treated in one of our colorful treatment rooms. There they’ll be attended to by one of Holdbrook’s caring pediatric dentists whose goal is to give your children quality, individualized dental care.

Did you know that we’re one of the only dentists in the South Jersey area who offers nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help children feel more relaxed and at ease? Oral Conscious Sedation is a technique that uses medications to help children cope with fear, reduce anxiety and cooperate with dental treatment. It’s especially helpful for children who have a high level of anxiety, are very young and don’t understand how to cooperate with the dentist; or for children who have special needs. If your child needs more intensive treatment, we offer Hospital Dentistry. In that case, your child’s dental work will be done at a participating hospital or surgical center under general anesthesia. At the end of your appointment, you’ll find that all of the fears and worrying will be gone and you and your child will feel like part of the Holdbrook Pediatric Dental family. It sounds great, doesn’t it? But it gets better. Holdbrook also treats adults in our Swedesboro/Logan Township office where we offer fullservice dental treatment including digital x-rays, sealants, restorative dentistry and tooth-colored fillings. You may be thinking, “It does sound great, but do you take my insurance?” Holdbrook Pediatric Dental, LLC, accepts almost all commercial insurance. We also take managed Medicaid. In addition, we have an inhouse insurance plan for those of you who may not have insurance or can’t afford the high cost of insurance. Our plan is $295 for the first person, and $199 for each additional. The plan includes 2 cleanings, 2 exams, any necessary x-rays and 25% off any additional services. Holdbrook Pediatric Dental is proud to say that we specialize in treating children and adults with physical, mental, developmental and cognitive conditions. We’re delighted to be able to support local community sports teams and school programs (music boosters, sports, etc.) It’s interesting to note that in 2009 we had just 91 patients, and today we’re over 27,000 patients strong. We have 2 offices and another on the way. Our current offices are in Gibbsboro (856) 783-0444 and Swedesboro/Logan Township (856) 556-4020. We’ll be opening a new office in Millville later this year. We must be doing something right! It may sound like we’re patting ourselves on the back, bragging about how wonderful we are. When in fact, it’s the total opposite. We’re so humbled by how far we’ve come and so proud that we’ve been able to help our communities. We’ve come a long way and none of it would have been possible without all of you: our patients, our family.✲

ome say Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday, but the holiday’s roots go back centuries. It’s an opportunity to reach out to your beloved and make him feel special. Although I think you should love and be loved every day, there’s nothing wrong with scheduling moments to evaluate your efforts. Women often struggle with romantic gestures for their men, and one thing I often hear from my male clients is that they want to feel wanted. Honoring the upcoming Fifty Shades movie, here’s a list of suggestions to ensure your man knows just how special he is. Choose one or more weekly:

Serve him breakfast in bed Warm his towel for him while he’s taking his morning shower Have his coffee waiting for him when he gets up Get up early and be wearing whatever he likes you in when he wakes up Find a fun way to be his alarm clock

Leave your lingerie in his lunch/laptop bag, saying “please return to owner later tonight”

Put some spicy couples dice in an envelope in his car with a note asking him how to play

Bake his favorite kind of cookie into a heart with a personalized or special message on it

Make a coupon book of the chores he doesn’t like to be r deemed whenever

3 Ways to Keep You

Heart-Happy & Healthy By Matthew Brenner

T

here are many fears in life; whether it be the fear of public speaking or the fear of flying, everyone has something that looms over the back of their mind. Every day, we’re bombarded by media that tries to get us to fear something new. Nevertheless, most fears ultimately stem from one thing -- the fear of death. While many people are petrified to fly or terrified they might get a debilitating disease, some overlook the most common cause of death in the world: heart and cardiovascular disease. The tragic truth is that most people ignore this and spend their time worrying about car accidents or e-coli outbreaks -- things filtered into our brains by the news. So, I’ve compiled a list of 3 ways to keep your heart happy and healthy. Get More Zzzz’s: Research reveals that even people who exercise regularly and eat a relatively healthy diet are much more likely to get a heart attack before the age of 50 without the proper amount of sleep. While the right amount of sleep is highly controversial, the most common prescribed amount is at least 6 hours. Everyone’s different, so see your physician. Love Your Body: Your body’s the only place that you have to live, so treasure it! Don’t just look at the nutrition facts before you gobble down some supposedly “low fat” corn puff chips. Before you throw that bag in your cart, look at the ingredients! The nutrition facts are like the cover of a book; the ingredients tell the real story. What kind of body do you want to have? More importantly, what kind of role model are you for your friends and family? If any of the first 5 ingredients has sugar in it, or you can’t pronounce the ingredient, then put it back on the shelf. If it can’t help you, then it’s probably hurting you. Stay away from processed foods when possible -- not when it’s convenient. Visit our website and sign up for our e-newsletter

Get Off Your Chair: Many of us have jobs that require us to sit down at a desk in front of a screen for many hours without getting up. Well, use your lunch break and other times throughout the day wisely! Get off the chair and go for a quick stroll -- preferably outside. PLEASE don’t call someone in the office if they’re in the building -- go walk over to them. They’ll appreciate the gesture and so will your body. Of course, exercise should be a part of your regular routine just as showering or brushing your teeth. Have to wake up early for work? Great -- wake up even earlier and go to the gym or take a fitness class. That way it’s over with and you can’t make excuses about not working out later. Grab a co-worker or friend, and it’ll make the early workouts bearable. There are fitness classes such as Zen10 Fitness that starts as early as 5am. If you have to wake up earlier than that for work, then do something at night.✲ Matthew Brenner is a freelance writer, Martial Arts Instructor at Action Karate in Cinnaminson and anti-bullying expert.

10 Most Awesome Things about Camp 6. By JessMichaels

S

ummer camp provides children with an amazing summer experience, making it difficult to narrow down the reasons why camp is just so great. Here’s a list of ten awesome things about summer camp. I’m sure after one summer at camp, your child will be able to come up with dozens of more ways that the camp experience is just so great!

Gain Skills in a Range of Activities – Whether your child goes to day or sleepaway camp, your child will participate in a variety of activities including swimming, waterskiing, tennis, boating, ropes course and so much more. Your child will try new activities that he/she may never have had a chance to try. Gain Life Skills Needed to be a Successful Adult – The skills needed to be a successful leader in the 21st century include communication, creativity, leadership, responsibility and collaboration—skills incorporated into many summer camp programs. At camp, children develop these skills needed to become secure, contributing, successful adults. Children Build Self-Esteem – This happens easily at camp. Children acquire new skills at camp, and they watch themselves improve each day throughout the summer. It also happens by being part of a summer camp community which is supportive and encouraging. Unplug from Technology – According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey of young people, children spend 7.5 hours a day engaged in electronic media including cell phones, computers, TV and video games. Instead of engaging in human interactions, children are staring at screens throughout the year. The majority of summer camps have a no technology rule which will allow your child to take a much needed break from media and focus on building relationships and participating in activities Self-reliance – Today’s children are in constant contact with their parents through texting and cell phone calls. Camp gives children a healthy separation from their parents, fostering independence.

7. 8. 9. 10.

Traditions – Many camps celebrate special traditions and rituals each summer. Children partake in these rituals such as Color War, Candles on the Lake and singing songs; and these activities connect children to the generation of campers who came before them and to the history of the camp.

Children Can Reinvent Themselves – At home, children have gone to school with the same children for years, and children may be labeled as the shy or the athletic child. At camp, your child can reinvent himself. Camp is an accepting community and a child can be themselves at camp. Camp is Fun – At camp, children are allowed to play in a safe and nurturing environment and are allowed to just be kids. Play is a powerful form of learning that contributes mightily to the child’s healthy physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. According to an American Academy of Pediatrics report, creative free play protects a child’s emotional development and reduces a child’s risk of stress, anxiety and depression. Live Communally – Sleepaway camps give children a chance to live communally and the chance to work as a team with other children. Meet New People – Camp fosters deep friendships and allows children to meet children from different communities as well as from around the world. Children also have the opportunity to relate to people of all ages at camp.✲

paint with LOVE By Deanna Robinson

Capture your little Valentine’s feet AND hands forever with this easy, 5-minute kid craft! You Need: ❤ Red paint ❤ Paintbrush and/or paper plate ❤ Construction paper (or cardstock) ❤ An 8x10 picture frame with mat Directions: ❤ Take your paper and gently fold it vertically and then horizontally. So that you’re left with 4 blocks. ❤ Take your child’s hand and paint it. (You can paint with a paintbrush or pour some paint onto a paper plate and lightly lay their hand on the paint). Once adequately covered, lay the hand in the top right block. ❤ Now paint your child’s foot and place it on a slight angle in the bottom left block. Repeat with the other foot. (You want the feet to make a V, so make sure the heels touch) ❤ Now you or your child can paint an L in the top left block and an E in the bottom right. Let it dry and place in your frame! Share Some Lip-Smacking Love! By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio Wondering how to show your family some extra love on Valentine’s Day? These three easy, heartshaped recipes might just do the trick! Homemade is one of the sweetest ways to say “I love you” to everyone special in your life.

Heart-Shaped Crackers

• 1 refrigerated piecrust (from a box) • 2 tbs. butter, melted • Cinnamon-sugar • Dried oregano • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese • Sea salt Let piecrust stand at room temperature for 30 minutes to soften. Preheat oven to 450°. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Unroll piecrust and using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut pastry into hearts and place on cookie sheet. Lightly brush crackers with melted butter, then sprinkle each heart with either the sweet or savory toppings, using as little or as much as desired. Bake 6 to 7 minutes or until crackers are lightly browned. Remove crackers from cookie sheet, cool 5 minutes. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Heart-Shaped Pizza

• Pizza dough • Extra-virgin olive oil • Tomato sauce • Shredded mozzarella cheese • Favorite veggie or meat toppings Preheat the oven to 450°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the pizza dough into a circle and put onto the baking sheet. Reshape the dough into a heart. Brush the dough with olive oil. Spread tomato sauce on dough. Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top of tomato sauce. If desired, add your favorite toppings. Put the heart-shaped pizza into the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Note: Feel free to sprinkle dried oregano, freshbasil or grated Parmesan on pizza before baking.

Soft Heart Brownie Cookies

• 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour • 1/2 tsp. sea salt • 1 tsp. non-aluminum baking powder • 1 cup butter, softened • 1 1/2 cups raw sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa Preheat oven at 350°. Whisk flour, salt and baking powder in bowl and set aside. Mix butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla and cocoa in mixer. Gradually add flour mixture, and mix until smooth. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least one hour. Roll out cookie dough onto floured counter. Cut into heart shapes, brushing extra deposits of flour off the top. Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 8-11 minutes or until edges are firm and the centers are slightly soft and puffed.Transfer to a wire rack to cool. As always, Bon Appetit! All About Love at

Blessed Edmund Preschool

f you haven’t started your search for a quality preschool for your little one, now’s the time. Nestled in a pleasant, inviting, wooded area in Cherry Hill resides Blessed Edmund Preschool, run by the Little Servant Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. This order of sisters was originally founded by Blessed Edmund Bojanowski in 1850 in Poland. As influenced by their founder, they devote their services to the education of children and help to orphans, the elderly and care to those who are ill and/ or needy. Teacher Terry Schaal confirms that they offer a “loving, nurturing environment” and that “the sisters bring in that loving, nurturing spirit.” Comparable to area schools in their curriculum, they offer a traditional preschool program, keeping the environment safe, warm and academically satisfying. Varying family schedules ensure they’re an ideal option for many. They offer an Early Arrival Program where students can bring breakfast and engage in different play activities. Preschool begins at 9am. Choose the school end time that works for you – 12pm, 3pm or take advantage of their After Care Program with a 6pm pick-up time. A summer program is also available in July. A large, fenced-in playground, computer access, in-house field trips and stimulating activities round out their offerings. Parents are

welcome participants, especially during their in-house field trips and special events. “Parents can do a presentation if they have a career that may be of interest for students,” says Schaal. Throughout the year, special, seasonal events and religious holidays are celebrated although you don’t have to be Christian to attend the school. Events include Pumpkin Picking, a Tree Trimming Festival, Christmas Pageant, a Special Persons’ Day, a Family Picnic, an Easter Egg Hunt, Graduation Ceremonies and more. “[During] the Christmas Pageant, they sing songs and wear beautiful costumes. Families come for the tree lighting, make ornaments, read about the origin of the tree and bring Christmas cookies,” says Schaal. She adds that for Graduation they have a moving-up ceremony for 3-year olds and a full cap and gown ceremony for Pre-K students. “Children have the opportunity to participate in a play with rhyming verses and songs.” A unique school with an on-site chapel where the public can attend mass and both sisters and teachers co-teach the students, they “recognize the potential and what’s special with each individual child,” Schaal says. “The sisters play a big role in the children’s lives and bring inner peace. They bring old-fashioned values to 2014.” However, both the sisters and teachers “keep up on continuing educa-

tion [and] keep current with everything about preschool education,” she states. Many families whose older children attended the preschool choose it for any subsequent children they have, according to Schaal. With the elaborate, beautiful seasonal decorations that adorn the halls to the caring atmosphere they provide, “you feel part of everything the minute you walk in,” says Schaal. Their excellence in academics is also shown when students graduate and attend elementary school. Schaal says that their parents have told them that other parents ask where they sent their children for preschool due to their readiness and success in elementary school. “I cannot say enough about the school. Each child is lucky to be at Blessed Edmund and experience all it has to offer them. I wish my kids could have gone here, but we did not live in this state during their early years. Blessed Edmund has it all!” Schaal proudly exclaims. When embarking on your preschool search for your little one, take a look at Blessed Edmund Preschool.
