lanning a vacation can require a great deal including deciding on a location that pleases the entire family, reserving rental cars, and possibly booking airfare. This process can not only be stressful but time consuming and costly. Dina Hurley, owner of Crossroads Trailers in Newfield has many solutions. In fact, she has more than 150. That’s the number of new and used recreational vehicles (RV’s)/travel trailers and fifth wheels she has available for sale on her 10 acre lot. Hurley started selling horse trailers from her horse farm 24 years ago. In 1995, with business booming, she and her husband expanded to their current site where they began selling RV’s as well and have since become known as New Jersey’s number one selling fifth wheel dealer. “We started out 24 years ago in 1988 just selling horse trailers from our farm,” said Hurley. “In 1995 we

moved to our current site and expanded to RV’s.” Today, the Hurley family offers a variety of RV’s, travel trailers, fifth wheels, pop up campers, used motor homes, utility trailers, cargo trailers and; staying true to their roots, horse trailers. With all these options it is easy to see how the Hurley’s make vacationing a breeze. “Our campers provide so many variables,” says Dina. Not only do the campers themselves offer endless options including some with bunk beds, entertainment centers and unique kitchens, they provide numerous tactical possibilities. “One option families have is to rent a camp site for the season and put the camper on the site the entire time. That way they can get in the car and drive to their camper for the weekend. It’s like having a second home. There are so many possibilities.” Hurley, who also recognizes cost is a big factor when budgeting for vacations, says sales start

ummer Slide.” What comes to mind when you see those words? Maybe you see an image of kids sliding into the deep end of a pool or maybe you see a water park or even your backyard. For most of us, summer is a time steeped in images from the past that are stirred up as the long summer nights approach. There’s another side, though, to the “summer slide,” conjuring different images. These images of “summer slide” are of kids playing video games for hours on end, avoiding reading at all costs, and basically doing little that is seen as productive or constructive. This “summer slide” is the one that researchers and educators talk about when they refer to the educational backsliding that occurs from being out of school for two to three months. How do you counter this “summer slide?” There are a few things to keep in mind as we go forward into these summer months. Be Realistic There are so many individual circumstances that differ from family to family, that when thinking of the “summer slide” you have to start with the reality of your own family’s summer. How structured is your child’s summer? Are most of his/her days already accounted for with established activities and scheduling? For example, if your child is at camp all day, then having her in a late-afternoon academic activity may not be in her best interest. Conversely, if your child has a relatively unstructured summer coming, then building in structured educational activities and experiences are something you should be considering. For the less structured kids, start right from the beginning explaining how the structure of the days will go (e.g. “Three mornings we will be going to the library’s reading program, two other mornings we’ll be at the school’s summer program. Most afternoons we’ll be at the pool.”) Reading as Ritual Most parents these days are concerned with the decline in children’s reading habits. There’s a good reason for that – children (and adults) seem to be reading less and less, a byproduct of the myriad distractions abounding in our everyday lives. This concern is even more prevalent in the summer months. To keep the reading interest alive, the more you can make family reading a fun part of the family time, the better. Once a week trips to the library, while getting an ice cream, can be a fun ritual for kids to look forward to. For older 8 | June 2012

children trying to set up incentives for book reading can have positive results. Many schools have a program called the “100 Book Challenge.” Maybe you can set up something like it called the “Ten Book Challenge,” and find a fun (not too expensive) way of celebrating if the challenge of reading ten books is met. Unplug ‘em We live in a wired world. Most of us are tethered to some electronic device through much of the day. As younger children are spending increasing time on their various pads and devices, going “old school” with a book for an hour or two may not have the same appeal as it might have in other eras before all of the electronics. Create large chunks of no screen time in the house. This would also include cell phone access. Get the kids screen-detoxed. It’s a lot easier said than done, but if you set the tone and the rules from the start, then they will come to know what you are expecting. Hikes & Day Trips There are lots of books on the market about hikes and bike trails right in New Jersey. I recently heard a local nature expert asking kids to go outside and try and notice things in nature.Take walks and hikes and see how many different things they can come up with – anything that is a part of nature is acceptable. Value of Unstructured Summer Days Summers have always been about daydreaming. Daydreaming encourages ideas and imagination as the clouds pass by. Don’t be afraid to let your child roll around in the dirt or in the grass with not much to do but get dirty - no iPads along for the ride, no cell phones. There’s gold in the hills of unstructured summer days, but your children have to get out to find it. Don’t structure every moment of their days with play dates and other adult-driven activities. You may wonder, how do these idea help to stave off the “summer slide?” While some of the concepts here are not “academic” in the strictest sense, all of these activities help to build background experience, strengthening memory and conceptual thinking. They also encourage the notion of conversation and getting beyond playing Xbox in the basement. The more you get your child out and connected, the less “slide” they will experience in the fall. Connect them to a book. Connect them to nature. Connect them to family bike rides. Connect them to what summer has to offer and there will be less backsliding.✲

How to Celebrate When You’re Expecting Family Features

Erick’s Place By Sharon Harris Zlotnick

E

very day, millions of Americans face personal trials and tribulations. Some succumb to despair, while others find the wisdom and strength to channel their sorrow into something positive and productive. Sabrina Umstead Smith of Sicklerville has transformed her personal grief into a memorial for her own son Erick, who died at three years old in 1992. By founding the nonprofit Erick J. Umstead Sabrina Umstead Smith Memorial Foundation in March 2007, Smith helps parents and caregivers of chronically ill children overcome their financial and emotional burdens. Smith’s sad journey began in 1988. As a young married woman in New York City, she and her husband eagerly anticipated the pending birth of their first child. A fire in her apartment building one night changed her destiny forever. Both Smith and her husband Eric suffered extreme smoke inhalation, which sent them both into unconsciousness. She survived…Eric did not. Ironically, the firefighter who rescued them died rescuing others at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Four months later, the widowed Smith gave birth to Erick on February 28, 1989. Erick’s underdeveloped lungs and cerebral palsy became immediately apparent, as smoke damage had deprived him of oxygen as a fetus. Overwhelmed and aware of her child’s limited odds of survival, Smith relocated to Philadelphia in July 1989. In Philadelphia, Erick could receive world-class care at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Smith would have family support while she worked at Bell of Pennsylvania. “I had wonderful resources since my insurance paid for 90 percent of Erick’s treatment. The social worker on Erick’s case was incredibly helpful,” says Smith. Ultimately, Erick was moved to CHOP’s pediatric center in Voorhees. At least one family member came daily, but his health deteriorated. Little Erick Umstead died on July 9, 1992. Smith’s intense grief dominated her life for years, and she was blessed to find compassion from her second husband Roosevelt “Rosy” Smith, whom she married in 1995. He had two daughters who are now grown.

“I’ve had 17 years of fabulous support from a great guy. His love, and also excellent professional help, has helped me heal. For years, I could not help another parent cope with similar problems and pain,” says Smith. By 2005, Smith decided to proactively memorialize her son, starting a scholarship in Erick’s name at her office. The time for the next phase of her life came upon retiring from Verizon in 2006, after 25 years. Although unsure about the exact direction, Smith felt a need to “repay” those who had helped her by helping others. She envisioned establishing an assistance organization for caregivers and parents of children, like Erick, who needed constant attention. After preparing the necessary paperwork, Erick’s Place achieved nonprofit status in March 2007. Today, five key component areas receive money from fundraising efforts: Caregivers Count-helps caregivers pay household utility, gas and food bills, plus special needs chairs and/or beds. Respite care pays for help to give caregivers free time for emotional balance. Assistive Technology Program-awards hospital and pediatric facility grants to purchase equipment. My PJs-distributes donated pajamas to area hospitals and pediatric facilities. Future Health Care Leaders-through the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church Ministry, this program supports undergraduates who choose chronically ill pediatrics as a career choice. Resource Center-the Foundation maintains website links to informational resources. “Our small charity has helped local organizations, but also funded equipment in New Brunswick. To date, we have contributed $2,600 in Caregivers Count grants, $1,000 for Assistive Technology, 350 pairs of pajamas and $3,500 in scholarships,” says Smith. In the future, Smith envisions a state-of-the-art facility to care for twenty chronically ill children, while also providing on-site housing and employment for their parents and caregivers. Using her educational background and skills, it will hopefully come to fruition. Smith holds a BS in Business from Marymount College and an MS in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. Smith hopes to inspire other parents confronting these challenges by sending them a heartfelt message. “I want to give parents hope. You are stronger than you know. Your child is a light that ignites you so that you can ignite others. Don’t hide these children. Let the world see how bright and special they are,” she says. inancial literacy is as important as learning the ABC’s. By teaching financial and entrepreneurial practices at a young age, children will be better prepared for their financial futures. The first step is to get started, so start with these educational activities: Start Talking: Try a simple question such as, “What is investing?” Questions are conversation starters and shouldn’t be complicated. The key is to teach through open communication that allows kids to discover – rather than be told – the answers.

Starting Thinking: Most kids are impulsive and fixate on things that are interesting. It’s tough to get them thinking beyond “now” when it comes to money. Overcoming that helps kids understand the basic principles of budgeting. Challenge them with questions such as, “Are you still going to want that expensive sweater in a month, or would it be better to save toward something else?” Helping kids grasp the concept of “value” instills a sense of finan-

cial ownership and responsibility. Remind them that once they spend the money, it’s gone.

Start Practicing: Kids learn through repetition. The more they do something, the better they get. No matter what age the child is, present her with scenarios that require practicing different financial principles. For example, during the summertime give your child $20 to set up a lemonade stand. Ask her, “What types of products will you need to buy to make lemonade? How much will those items cost? How many days do you plan to have the lemonade stand open?” Asking these questions will not only help her work through the answers, but will also increase her understanding of simple business terms such as “overhead” and “profit.” Additionally, contributing more “investment” money to the fledgling business opens up dialogue about investors and stocks. It takes a little imagination to come up with scenarios, but it can be a fun learning opportunity for the child and the parent.

Start Investigating: The Internet provides a wealth of financial learning tools for children and parents. Of course, parents should monitor what their children are viewing online, but there are some invaluable educational sites, such as www.smckids.com, which features webisodes for Secret Millionaires Club (SMC), an animated series starring Warren Buffet as he mentors a group of kids. Featured on The HUB network, as well as the website, the SMC series is an innovative way to teach sound financial and entrepreneurial practices to young people. Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association Warns About the Risks Of Heatstroke

Safety Tips to Prevent Vehicular A

s outside temperatures rise, the dangers for children being seriously injured or even dying from being left alone inside a hot car also rises. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) has joined with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in an effort to reduce these deaths by reminding parents and caregivers about the dangers of heatstroke in young children. “More than half of all vehicle-related heatstroke deaths in children are caused by a child accidentally being left in the car, and more than 30 percent are from a child getting into a hot car on their own,” said Michael Dwyer CAE Executive Director of JPMA. In an effort to prevent these needless tragedies, JPMA urges all parents and caregivers to do three things:

ALWAyS lock the car and put the keys out of reach. And, if you ever see a child left alone in a hot vehicle, call 911 right away

According to NHTSA, heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle fatalities for children 14 and under. In fact, one child dies from heatstroke, nearly every 10 days, from being left in a hot vehicle. Warning signs of heatstroke include: red, hot, and moist or dry skin, no sweating, a strong rapid pulse, or a slow weak pulse, nausea, confusion or acting strangely. If a child exhibits any of these signs after being in a hot vehicle, cool the child rapidly and call 911. “Children’s body temperatures can rise up to five times faster than that of an adult, and heatstroke can occur in temperatures as low as 57 degrees,” said Dwyer “On an 80° day, a car can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes.” NHTSA and JPMA want to remind everyone of a few key safety tips to prevent deadly accidents and to prevent vehicular heatstroke: 26 | June 2012

• Never leave an infant or child unattended in a vehicle—even if the windows are partly open, or the engine is running and the air conditioning is on. • Don’t let children play in an unattended vehicle. Teach them a vehicle is not a play area. • Check the vehicle - front and back - before locking the door and walking away. • Take steps to remember not to leave a child in a vehicle. • Write yourself a note and place it where you’ll see it when you leave the vehicle. • Place your purse, briefcase, or something else you’re sure to need in the back seat so you’ll be sure to see a child left in the vehicle. • Keep an object in the car seat, such as a stuffed toy. Once the child is buckled in, place the object where the driver will notice it when he or she leaves the vehicle • Always lock vehicle doors and trunks and keep keys out of children’s reach. If a child is missing, check the vehicle first, including the trunk. • Ask your childcare center to call you if your child doesn’t arrive on time for childcare. • Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you see a child left alone in a hot vehicle. When children are in distress due to heat, get them out of the vehicle as quickly as possible.

atching my son after he returned from summer camp was the first hint that remarkable growth was underway. He was engaged, giving, and confident. Viewing the camp experience as a respite from the real world is somehow to miss the point—it is the real world—simply getting dirty, trying to pull harder so your team wins, finding the friend you always wished for, being yourself—it’s the time of your life and the promise of the future. As a parent, I constantly ask where do children have their mental, personal, emotional, and physical needs nurtured? Where will they learn to get along with others, to take safe risks, to deal with conflict in a constructive way that encourages them to be creative, to explore and discover, to learn by actively doing, to try—to fail and try again? In the camp community, I find what I intuitively know as a parent—to be a positive, productive adult one needs the opportunity to truly experience childhood . . . that is how one grows. Camps enjoy the opportunity of working their magic with all of our children: the gifted athlete, the budding musician, the curious naturalist, the first-time camper, and the child with a disability. The idea that camp is for every child isn’t just a pipe dream—it’s a reality. And one that parents and children celebrate and the American Camp Association supports by promoting safe, fun, and developmentally-appropriate experiences in the camp setting. The entire experience began with a single camp—The Gunnery Camp in 1861. As I write, I am buoyed by the recognition of just how dynamically this idea has taken flight. Over 11,000,000 children and adults will participate in camp in 2007. Overall, the numbers continue to grow, and this popular movement testifies so loudly to the extraordinary benefits that camp provides to our young people—responsibility, exploration, engagement, not to mention the spiritual dimension of the camp experience. Is camp quantifiable? Maybe not—but as a parent, I can only react with extreme pleasure as my son displayed those acts of kindness and

generosity of spirit that follow so naturally from his time at camp. His chance to develop and grow was marked by constant changes—our camps meet those challenges every day of every session and that’s why doing what we do becomes so vital. Camp is about firsts—a first campfire outdoors, leading a pony, catching a frog, enjoying the evening stories, and being chosen—chosen to be part of a community that values each child and his or her special gifts. It’s about making memories and honoring the traditions of those who have come before. Children are alight with the idea that their acorn hangs from a rafter where their parents and aunts and uncles placed theirs so many years before. The American Camp Association has grown through its commitment to research and education in the field of child development. s school days wind down and parents consider their children’s summer activities, they should consider camping. Tall Pines Day Camp in Williamstown should definitely top that camping list. Modern camping provides fun, productive days for children who live in a complex world. The American Camping Association (ACA) stresses four “C’s”-compassion, contribution, commitment and character. At camp, children learn compromise, problem solving, independent thinking and resource-sharing skills to prepare them for adult life. Owner/director Andrew Yankowitz thanks partners Owner/Executive Director Marvin Domsky, who owned Willow Grove Day Camp where Yankowitz was a camper and later worked in the kitchen (1980-1991), and Howie Zeitz for his love of camping. Yankowitz brought his personal camping experience in suburban Philadelphia to Tall Pines when it opened with 600 campers in June 1996. Thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles, the trio discovered the site. “Then-owner Norman Braman wanted to build a dedicated training camp on this ground. It didn’t work out, but we three deemed it perfect to build Tall Pines. It took over six years to get permits, but in one year we built and marketed the camp,” says Yankowitz. Yankowitz believes Tall Pines immediately filled a need, saying, “Formerly, children only had swim clubs instead of traditional camps. We transformed the vast property by rehabbing old chicken coops into airconditioned bunks unlike those old South Jersey versions of plain changing rooms. Our regional location has appealed to New Jersey and Philadelphia families.” According to Yankowitz, Tall Pines offers the most activities in the Delaware Valley. The camp looks like a country club and provides dozens of options for everyone, from sports and swimming to artistic and cultural pursuits. A theater program incorporates one-third of the day and runs through the end of summer. Campers over seven may also participate in optional horseback riding sessions for an extra fee. Camping and dining at Tall Pines is healthy and delicious. Yankowitz states, “We have 12 different daily lunch choices and we address food allergies, like nuts, and gluten-free needs. Our great partnership with parents allows us to email ingredient lists of foods we serve so they can comment and make recommendations. We have two nurses on site. Our pediatrician on call is my wife, Dr. Esther Harris of Merchantville Pediatrics.” 30 | June 2012

New for 2012, Tall Pines has partnered with the Cherry Hill School of Rock. This alliance will motivate children to experience all levels of music education from degreed full-time music instructors. Instruments may be purchased or rented for home practice. Personal interaction is important at Tall Pines. A linked Xbox 360 room fosters fun play, combined with camaraderie. Yankowitz wants kids to “grow roots” at Tall Pines for many years. “More than 80% of our campers are returning children; over half of our staff members were former campers.We have almost a 50/50 split between boys and girls. The camper ratio is 12 younger children per bunk-with three staff-for junior camp. First grade children and older has 18 per bunk, with three counselors,” he says. Three to eight-week full-day sessions are for children three to 14. The Seedlings program offers half-day sessions for children, aged three to four, not ready for full days. Accessibility to Tall Pines is easy, thanks to customized transportation plans. All drivers are insured Tall Pines employees who undergo annual driver record checks. Children travel in air-conditioned 12-15 passenger vans from Center City Philadelphia, South Jersey and Atlantic County shore communities. Extended hours for working parents may be arranged. Because many families spend time at the Shore, Tall Pines offers the Shore Shuttle. For $14 per seat, the Shore Shuttle drops campers off at the Margate Library on Friday afternoons, picking them up on Monday mornings. The Shore Shuttle operates throughout the July 4th holiday week. Second seat transportation between two homes is also available for additional fees. Yankowitz says openings remain in specific communities. his month I’m sharing two recipes using a heart healthy fruit, the tomato, I know that may sound confusing since many people think of the tomato as a vegetable, but inall actuality it is a fruit! But no matter what it is, tomatoesare chock full of health benefits for you and your family,(unless you are allergic of course). Tomatoes are known for their outstanding antioxidant content, including their rich concentration of lycopene, they also provide an excellent amount of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and a good amount of the mineral manganese. Someresearch studies show that by eating tomatoes or tomato based foods regularly, along with a healthy diet, may reduced the risk of heart disease, which is even more of a good reason to add tomatoes to your family meals as often as possible! So, until next time, eat well, sleep well, live well. Here’s to our health!

HOMEMADE TOMATO SAUCE 2 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp. tomato paste 10 -12 fresh Italian plum tomatoes, diced 1/4 cup water 1 tbs. raw sugar, honey, agave or natural sugar substitute Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes Sea salt, to taste Black Pepper, to taste A few leaves of fresh basil, chopped Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, stir in garlic and tomato paste, cook for 1 minute, then add tomatoes and water. Add sweetener of choice, crushed pepper flakes, and season well with salt and pepper, once the sauce comes to a boil lower the heat and cook for 25 minutes. Add the chopped basil and simmer sauce for 5-10 minutes longer. If desired, puree tomato sauce in a food processor before serving over hot cooked, and drained multi-grain pasta. BRUSCHETTA 1 loaf crusty multi-grain bread, sliced 3 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil, divided 3 cloves garlic, minced 5 fresh Italian plum tomatoes, diced small 2 tsp. balsamic or apple cider vinegar 4 - 5 fresh basil leaves, cut into thin shredded strips Sea salt, to taste Black Pepper, to taste Preheat oven to 450°. Brush each piece of bread with olive oil, place on an un-greased baking sheet and bake for 3 to 5 minutes or until lightly browned. In a bowl, combine garlic, chopped tomatoes, 1 tbs. olive oil, balsamic or apple cider vinegar, basil, salt and pepper, give a good stir then spoon mixture on top of bread slices and serve.
