Dear Readers,
I
t brings me great pleasure seeing my husband interact with our kids, whether it’s hugging them, teaching them something or joking around. Since my own father died when I was a child, I take mental snapshots of my kids enjoying their dad and wonder how my childhood would have differed having mine around. Luckily, I do remember times when he made me feel safe while watching The Wizard of Oz on TV; or when he reminded me how lucky I was to have a nice meal in front of me, instead of what he ate during his Korean War tour of duty. I’m happy that a part of him lives on in me. Family friends and relatives tell me that my personality resembles his, and I’m proud to carry that on. And if you morphed my parents’ photos together, you would very definitely get the image of me. Without hesitation, when I found out that I was pregnant with my son eight years ago, I knew I’d honor my father by using his first name as my son’s middle name. pending time in the car this weekend? This summer? Remember the old license plate games you used to play when you were young? Try them with your kids. Make up new ones…together!
Let’s see what I remember … • Name the States — Count how many different state license plates you see. That was probably the key one when I was young. If we were in Pennsylvania, it was very cool for my brother and me to spot a license plate from Florida or Kentucky! • Find the Letters — Pick a letter — like “R” for Ryan or “S” for Sari. How many R’s or S’s can you find in license plates? Count as you drive. Everyone takes turns selecting letters. • Add Them! — For older kids, check out one license plate and see if the kids can add the numbers together. What’s the highest number? • Spell a Word — Do any of the combinations of letters on one license plate make a word -- even a short one like A N D? Look at a few cars next to each other, especially if you’re stuck in traffic. Can you make longer words? • 21 — I remember years ago my friend Helene Levin told me they used to play Black Jack while looking at license plates. Which one has a number combination adding up to 21? • Your turn — make up your own license plate games. Try with billboards, too. Pining to Pin:
Make Pinterest Work for You!

y now, we’ve all heard about the site Pinterest, browsed the home page, established a board or two, developed a full-blown obsession with pinning or (gasp!) tried an idea that we’ve found there. I would place myself in the camp of obsessed and busily testing some of my pins. “What is Pinterest?” The best way to explain this social connecting site is to compare it to an old-school bulletin board. Before the advent of this site, women especially would use a push pin to hang items of interest—recipes, upcoming invitations, book reviews, magazine clipping and quotes on a cork board. Now, most of our inspiration results from blog hops, Google searches and general Internet surfing. So it only makes sense that we organize the information we find closer to the source. (No need to print out all of those recipes you may want to try at some point!) Pinterest is an infinite collection of ideas which were posted and can be ‘pinned’ for future reference. “How Can I Get Started?” Pinterest is linked to a Facebook (FB) account, so if you are already on FB, the set-up is easy. Other options are requesting an invitation from the site or receiving an invite from a friend. Similar to FB, users can follow pins of others FB friends or those who have similar interests and styles. “This is So Overwhelming!” Scrolling through the endless collage of images on Pinterest certainly can be daunting and intimidating. We get the feeling that everyone else is making their meals from scratch and their home belongs in a magazine. Not so, of course. At this point, it’s especially important to remain true to yourself. If sewing is your hobby, then by all means, pin posts that give you ideas and tutorials for future projects. If you love to try out new meals, I’d recommend individual boards for each category of recipes similar to a cookbook. On the other hand, if cooking is a chore for you, then don’t waste time pinning recipes that you’ll never access. Treat accumulated pins in the same way we’ve been taught to tame clutter. Only have on your boards/homes those pins/ 6 | June 2013
items that are meaningful to you. What Can I Add to My Boards? In this answer lies the beauty of Pinterest! Images can be repinned from others’ pins, added from any source on the Internet or photos that you take and upload. Remember all of the web pages that we would bookmarks under our “Favorites” tab? Now they’re all visually present and posted next to other images which fit under the same grouping. Each pin is represented by an image/photo and has a link to the site where the full information can be found. How Do I Find One “Pin in a Haystack”? After over 800 pins, I’m still able to locate a specific idea that I want to use with ease. The secret is to sort the pins onto boards by distinct categories. Each time you repin an image, you’ll be given the choice onto which board you’d like to assign it. In the same way, when you file coupons that you’ve clipped, more specific categories are always better. Currently, I have 40 boards with labels such as ‘recipes to try’, ‘Easter’, ‘upcycling’ and ‘sewing along.’ However, my favorite is ‘tried and true’ where I repin all of the ideas I’ve tried. Your board categories will be quite different from anyone else because we all have different interests and organize information in a unique way. Pinterest can be a time drain or a useful tool, dependent on how discriminating you are in your pinning and assigning each pin to a board. I regularly reference pins on crafts I’d like to create, gift ideas and books I’d like to read. Currently, I’m accumulating ideas for my daughter’s upcoming bunny-themed birthday party. And, true confession, in the midst of writing this article, I clicked over to Pinterest and added three pins to my boards: how to repaint brassy doorknobs, an idea for making sand dollars into a bunting and a book to my ‘must read’ list. Save Your Child from
Summer Brain Drain without Going Insane

Read Whatever, Wherever, Whenever Regardless of age, give kids material that motivates them to read. Hook them… even if it’s Discovery Girl Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Kids or a comic book. Have them read about topics they love, explore a new interest or dig deeper into an author they enjoy. Kids love contests -challenge them to read as many books by their favorite author as they can over the summer for a prize. At the middle school level, reading four to five books over the summer has a positive impact on fall reading achievement comparable to attending summer school. (Kim, 2004) The take-away point is “go for QUANITY!” Bring those books, tablets and Kindles everywhere with you -- that includes you, Mom and Dad! Create a “family of readers” by taking your books on appointments, to the park and to camp. At the end of the day, read together in the backyard with a cool drink. Also, books on CD or www.audible.com are more fun than you think for long car rides or even just a ride to a family BBQ (most school-assigned books for older students are available on CD/www.audible.com)

s teachers, we understand the important role that parents play in preventing the “summer slide.” Making time over the summer to help children maintain the skills they worked so hard to learn over the school year sets them up for success come next fall. However, as moms, we know that despite our best intentions, even summer days are packed. Every year we feel like we turn around and it’s the end of August, leaving us wondering where all that time went. So as literacy teacher-moms, we created a motto to keep us on track. Summer Learning Doesn’t Have to be Separate from Summer Fun The “lazy days of summer” is the time to learn and reconnect with each other without homework hanging over your heads. To prevent summer brain drain without going insane yourself, mix learning into your family’s adventures. Trip/Experience – Talk – Book – Talk or Book – Talk – Trip/Experience - Talk Going down to the shore – ask your librarian or search the Kindle store for non-fiction and fiction books about the ocean. It’s that simple! For elementary age children and younger, we’re fans of Gail Gibbon’s beautifully illustrated nonfiction books covering a wide array of topics. Her books are packed with interesting facts and vocabulary. Remember “learning to read” transitions into “reading to learn.” You can facilitate your child’s literacy success by helping them to build background knowledge about topics and ideas that they’ll be expected to learn. The idea is: the more a child already knows about a topic, the easier it will be to understand the lessons and language taught in school. For older kids, you can use this same process to prepare for the fall. Check out the school’s website to explore concepts or skills your child will learn next year. Also, the Council of the Great City Schools, www.cgcs.org, has a wonderful downloadable publication, Parent Roadmaps to the Common Core Standards, which gives a curriculum overview for literacy and math in each grade. 8 | June 2013
Sneak in some “brain-work” in a way that works for you, whether you set aside certain days of the week or a certain chunk of time each day. If you make it part of your routine, it will feel like less work. Summer learning is worth the effort—just remember, have fun with it!✲

On the Way to Cape May By Denise M. Mooney
Looking for something different to do at the Jersey Shore this summer? Check out these perhaps lesser known family-friendly spots on the way to Cape May! Cape May County Zoo (http://www.capemaycountyzoo.org/): Located in Cape May Courthouse, the zoo is situated in the woods on Route 9. It’s a picturesque zoo that offers many attractions for young and old alike. Beautiful walking paths wind through a park to bring you to the main gate and guide you throughout the zoo. Follow the boardwalk through the woods to the African Savanna where you might be greeted by a curious giraffe! Be on the lookout for lions, tigers and bears as you stroll through this shaded zoo to the Reptile and Amphibian House or World of Birds Aviary. Monkeys, otters, wildcats, alligators, peacocks and more provide a full day of entertainment throughout the zoo. Though it may be a small zoo, it boasts a collection of over 550 critters representing over 250 species! One of the best features of this zoo is that it’s FREE! It’s a non-profit community zoo which will gladly accept donations, but above all, wants to share the animal experience with you. Consider the Cape May County Zoo for your next family adventure! Cape May Point State Park (http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/ capemay.html): Head to the southernmost point of NJ, a little further past the end of the Garden State Parkway, and you’ll find yourself at Cape May Point. One of the major attractions to this park is the 157-foot high lighthouse which can be toured for a nominal fee and provides tourists with breathtaking views! Covering 244 acres, the park also provides opportunities for fishing, birdwatching, picnicking and hiking. In addition there’s a World War II Bunker and a museum on the area’s natural and historic features. Several miles of trails offer a beautiful scenic hike through freshwater wetland marshes, past ponds, by the beach and coastal dunes. A handicapped-accessible boardwalk allows travelers of all levels to participate on some of the trails while providing access to more difficult trails along the journey. A perfect way to spend the day with the entire family in the great outdoors! Sunset Beach (http://www.sunsetbeachnj.com/default.aspx): Just down the lane from the Cape May Lighthouse, you’ll come to the end of the island at Sunset Beach. Bring your shovel and buckets to dig for “Cape May diamonds” while watching dolphins swim past the partially sunken remains of the concrete ship the USS Atlantus! Kids love discovering the unique quartz crystals that cover the beach and seeing how the stones can turn into “diamonds” once polished and faceted. Making memories at Sunset Beach is easy to do with mini golf, The Grille, gift shops, spectacular sunsets and the Evening Flag Ceremony, a 40-year tradition honoring veterans each night. Each of these shore points are free, offering additional activities at a minimal cost and providing hours of fun for your family! Paying Attention to ADHD By Dr. Kelly N. Moore
A
necdotally, I often hear people use the term “ADHD” to describe a child that’s being unruly, fidgety or has difficulty following instructions without a meltdown. I’ve also heard in conversation with friends and colleagues that ADHD is overdiagnosed or diagnosed in a biased manner. Questions arise about whether age, gender, race or socioeconomic status plays a role in how many children receive a diagnosis. It’s a valid concern, and the best advice I have for any parent wondering is to educate yourself as much as you can about this diagnosis. What is ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a mental health diagnosis given to a person that demonstrates challenges in areas related to attention, impulsivity and physical activity. In recent years, attention in the field of psychology has grown to include adults in this category; for many years, this diagnosis was strictly reserved for childhood disorders in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM), which is a guide used by many in the mental health field in order to accurately diagnose patients. There are three subtypes of ADHD: ADHD, Combined type; ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive Type; and ADHD, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive type. Symptoms of ADHD include behaviors such as difficulties with organizing tasks and maintaining attention, constantly being “on the go” or squirming in a seat, or often interrupting others while talking or having challenges with waiting his/her turn in

a game.These, among other symptoms, indicate overall challenges with planning, making thoughtful decisions, and demonstrating the ability to inhibit behaviors appropriately. Is ADHD overdiagnosed? The short answer to this question is: it depends on what one means by “overdiagnosed”. There are many studies that have conflicting reports about whether ADHD is diagnosed at a higher rate among certain groups, but there are some areas that should give parents pause, depending on their child’s demographic. Studies have found that girls tend to be either misdiagnosed (e.g., with depression) or not diagnosed at all, even when they’re demonstrating ADHD symptoms. The reason for this is that many girls will fall more into the ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive type. The types of symptoms clustered in this category are often less disruptive in the classroom in comparison to the hyperactive and impulsive symptoms. As a result, these students may be less likely to even be identified unless their inability to focus results in declining grades. Thus, girls may simply fly under the radar, which ultimately results in the rates of boys with ADHD seeming to be extremely high. Boys have a tendency to present with the more noticeable symptoms of ADHD (e.g.,
calling out, squirming, getting out of seats), and those behaviors are disruptive in a classroom setting which is why they may be more readily identified for evaluation. Incidence across races is fairly similar; however, there is some research that suggests that African-American students are more likely to be given a Conduct Disorder diagnosis -- which is a higher level behavioral disorder among children. Also, ethnic minority children that may fit criteria for ADHD are also less likely to receive treatment -- either because they’re not identified or misdiagnosed altogether. Bottom Line Essentially, much of the talk of ADHD being overdiagnosed in general isn’t supported by any sufficient data. However, certain groups are more vulnerable to either being overdiagnosed or simply misdiagnosed. It’s very important that if you suspect that your child has ADHD-like symptoms, you may want to seek a professional opinion. Keep in mind, however, that you’re your child’s best advocate, and by increasing your knowledge of their symptoms and potential diagnoses, you and your healthcare provider can effectively ensure that your child receives the best care possible.✲

Summer’s almost here and moms are looking for places for their kids to visit this summer. Here are some kid-friendly places for summer fun. dating back to 1953. Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, this 300-acre island, also known as Pea Patch Island, is located in the middle of the Delaware River. A ferry takes you to the island and a jitney provides transportation from the island dock to the fortress. Costumed interpreters transport you back into time and show you what life was like on the island in the summer of 1864. These interpreters portray actual inhabitants at the fort, such as Captain Ahl, a Union soldier who commanded the artillery regiment at the fort, and Laundress Sally Byrne, who talks about how she made money at the fort to feed her family.You can even talk to Confederate Prisoners of War about what life was like for them on the island. However, Civil War History isn’t the only thing of interest at the fort. The island is also home to nine different species of birds and one of the largest wading bird nesting sites on the East coast. The tour not only shows youngsters mint artifacts, but they’ll also see the actual making of brand new coins at forty feet above the factory floor. y background has always been in golf. I played golf for Belmont Abbey College, NC, and worked as an Assistant at Spring Brook Country Club and Madison Golf Club, both in Northern NJ. When it came to my attention that a golf center was for sale in NJ, I jumped at the opportunity to make a living doing the thing I love. Although my wife and I weren’t familiar with the area before buying the center, we instantly fell in love with the local community. We bought the facility in September 2010, but it was in such disrepair that we didn’t actually open until March 2011. With a lot of hard work and determination, we opened Big Swing Golf Center in time for spring. Big Swing Golf Center strives to be the premier family golf center in South Jersey. We offer a 28-acre facility featuring a golf driving range (open year-long), 36-hole miniature golf course, six outdoor batting cages, a golf shop; a full-time PGA Golf Pro, Sean Driscoll, for instruction; Mulligans’ Snack Stand featuring Philadelphia Water Ice and Richmond’s Ice Cream; and birthday party packages. ong gone are the days when dad went out to work and mom stayed home, raised the children and took care of the household. Today’s daddies change diapers, care for their children full-time and maintain the house all with a smile. The latest census shows that 32% of dads regularly care for their children (up from 26% in 2002), and, among those with preschool-age kids, one in five dads is the primary caregiver. In households where mom works that figure rises to nearly one in three. For Brian Perla, father of two-year old Charlie, the decision to stay at home was twofold. “Of course, there was the financial aspect of not wanting to spend money for childcare,” he says. The average cost of daycare in the United States is $11,666 a year which is $972 a month. Perla is not alone. In 2009, there were approximately 158,000 stay-at-home dads, according to America’s Families and Living Arrangements. These married fathers with Visit our website and sign up for our e-newsletter
children younger than 15 have remained out of the labor force for at least one year, primarily so they can care for the family while their wives work outside the home. Perla’s main reason for choosing to stay at home, and, perhaps the most rewarding aspect of his role as stay-at-home dad, is witnessing his child’s firsts. “I enjoy being able to see her evolve slowly as opposed to coming home and hearing about her day. I get to see her first everything. It’s very exciting.” In addition to having his own business designing websites and illustrating children’s’ books at night, Perla spends his days with his daughter exploring local parks. “We have a lot of parks in the area. There is no better way to break up the day then have her pick which park we go to. I ask her what she wants to do, and as long as it’s within reason, we do it. We like to go for drives. She even hums through the gears,” he said. When asked about the downside, Perla said he, like a lot of stay-at-home dads, lack sleep and free time. “There are things we

take for granted like taking a shower, eating, sleeping. There is a lack of free time. I have to be very meticulous about time.” To avoid cabin fever, he enjoys going once a week to what he calls “an old man gym,” aka local skate park, with his other friends with children. For Perla, physical activities break up the monotony. Perla also keeps his daughter Charlie socialized by enrolling her in a Toddler Time class which allows her to be social for a few hours a week. While gender roles of the 1950s and images of the stay-at-home mom have shifted, social stigmas are still attached when men act as the primary caregiver while the wife goes off to work and pays the bills. “If there is a social stigma attached to having my wife pay the bills, I have never experienced it. If there is, I don’t care.” For those that have the luxury of being a stay-at-home parent, the benefits surely outweigh the negatives.✲

Dear Mommy and Daddy, Hi, it’s me, your baby! I know you have waited nine long months to meet me.You wondered if I would have hair, how big I would be and who I would look like. I’m so excited to meet you and be your baby. I know I can be a bit confusing at times. And you can’t always figure out what I want. I wish I came with an instruction manual like everything else. Then you could just look up what to do when you get confused. I know you love me. I feel it when you smile at me, kiss me and talk to me in your “goo goo” voices. So here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to tell you some things that will make it easier to figure me out. I love you and want to always make you smile. • Don’t be afraid to pick me up -- I won’t break. Just make sure to support my head. It’s a little wobbly. • Sometimes, I like to see the world from your shoulder or sitting in your lap. Changing positions makes my life more interesting. • I’m crying because I’m trying to tell you something. It’s the only way I know how to communicate. Please stay calm.You’ll get to know what I want soon. Remember, we’re both new at this! • Don’t be afraid you’ll spoil me if you pick me up. I love to be held. It makes me feel safe. I especially love it when you put me in the BABY BJÖRN and carry me close…ahh!

• Please let me have a binky. Sucking makes me feel good. I promise I won’t take it to kindergarten! • Please don’t get upset if I have a cranky day. Sometimes, I just feel grouchy. Turn on the dryer, swaddle me and lay me on top of it. I love the warm blankie and the vibration from the dryer -- it might just lull me to sleep. But please don’t let go of me. • You may think I don’t like to be swaddled, but you’re wrong. I’m just trying to tell you I want to keep my arms out. I like feeling snug and warm. It feels like when I lived in your womb. I love that memory. • I know you want me to take a nap, but sometimes I’m just not ready. Please, please let me play in my bouncy seat. And don’t forget to turn on the vibrate button. It feels like a massage. • I love to nap in my swing. The back-and-forth motion is so relaxing. I know I can’t stay in it 24/7. But I’ll try to give you a few more hours of shut-eye when I wake up with the roosters if you let me swing after my early morning feeding. • I love music -- please, please play lullabies for me when it’s time for bed. I sleep much better when I hear those tunes. It reminds of me your heartbeat.

From Splash to Swim By Deb McCarson
D
rowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under twelve. Making kids safe around water is the best way to decrease that statistic. In addition to keeping unsupervised children away from pool areas, parents should consider swimming lessons in order to help their children be safe, comfortable and confident around water. Moreover, parents may be surprised to find that swimming lessons help their children develop a wide range of life skills. The most obvious reason for swimming lessons is to help children respond appropriately in water. Bev Williams, manager of Salem County’s Elmer Swim Club and a Red Cross-certified water safety instructor, says, “The most important thing is that a child knows how to react if he falls into water or finds himself in water that is too deep for him. That includes a number of things -- from swimming, calling for a lifeguard or floating on his back.” The most important benefit of swimming lessons is safer kids, but researchers are finding there are more advantages to early swimming lessons. According to a recent study by Griffin University, young swimmers are performing better in a number of areas. The study’s lead researcher, Robyn Jorgensen, reports, “Swimming children score significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are really important for their transition to school: their cognitive development, their language development and their physical development.” According to the report, “swimming children also score signifi32 | June 2013
cantly better on measures that related to their visual motor skills; gross motor stationary skills; oral expression; and achieving in general areas of literacy and numeracy and mathematical reasoning. It was also found that the children scored better on measures of understanding and complying with directions.” The study involved over 7000 children in New Zealand, Australia and the United States, making it the “world’s most comprehensive study into early-years swimming.” Laurie Lawrence, creator of Kids Alive, a program developed to educate the public on five important steps to reduce the risk of preschool drowning, is not surprised by the results of the study. “It’s always been a dream of mine to prove that children who start lessons early. . . it builds their social, emotional, physical and intellectual capital.” While the proof is out concerning the benefits of early swimming lessons, it’s important for parents to remember that even after early swimming lessons; young children should never be left unattended around water. Compassionate Friends Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center By M.B. Sanok
A
few months ago, my daughter and I visited the Compassionate Friends Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center (CFTRC) in Medford with her Girl Scout troop. The girls who have varying disabilities were able to brush and accessorize the horses and observe a fellow Scout and student ride a horse with assistance and demonstrate the skills she’s learned. Seeing how calming the atmosphere, how patient and understanding the staff, and how engaged the girls were with the horses, opened my eyes to an innovative way of helping people with special needs. At CFTRC, founder Sherri Briggs and her volunteer staff offer horse riding therapy and lessons to disabled individuals in South Jersey. The program is “specifically designed to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit for individuals with special needs,” says Sherri. Each program is customized to suit that specific person’s needs. The mission of the organization is “to strengthen the body, mind and spirit of each person while fostering independence in a safe environment.” Since the goal of instructing those with disabilities is to allow individuals to increase their independence, this type of therapy works on that aspect as well as keeping the individual focused and calm. “When they’re up on the horse, every person becomes equal,” she says. Horse riding lessons and hippotherapy (physical therapy using horses) provides many benefits to those with disabilities. Strength, endurance, balance, coordination, flexibility, and relaxation – all these qualities develop and improve as a result of the program. Along with relaxation, it teaches students discipline, patience and confidence in themselves; and their ability to learn and focus is heightened and improved. students learning, they’re engaging in a fun activity with opportunities to interact with others and enhance their social skills. Sherri who studied to become a special education teacher established CFTRC after enduring a serious injury as a result of a ski accident. “I used horseback riding as my rehab therapy,” she says. This chosen therapy sparked her interest, and she decided to pursue it further and eventually went to Texas to become a Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) instructor. When she returned, she focused on creating and opening a center of her own to help others. CFTRC is a member of PATH. “We are hoping to expand the program, so we can do more hippotherapy and partner with a physical therapist and an occupational therapist…. We are also going to start fundraising in order to supplement access for riders without the financial means to participate…” Sherri also mentions plans for a “sensory trail” for the riders and their horse companions. Feedback from students’ parents has been amazing. All riders showed improvement in different areas and to differing degrees. Sherri states that she’s observed non-verbal students who have learned to communicate; and one rider who needed a walker gained enough strength to no longer require one. Some riders excel so much that they “graduate” to riding the horses without assistance. Is Your Child Ready for Camp? By American Camp Association, NY & NJ

hile it’s an exciting time, your child going to camp may cause some nervousness for both you and your child. So how do you know when the right time is to send your child to camp? The American Camp Association, NY and NJ, suggests that parents consider the following when figuring out whether your child is ready for camp and how to prepare your child for the experience.
familiarizing them with the camp program, activities and camp layout. Many overnight camps also offer Rookie Days the summer before a child will go to camp. These days give future campers a chance to experience camp in-session by joining in on camp activities for the day or for a weekend. Keep in mind that the more a child feels involved in the process of choosing a camp, the more successful their camp experience is likely to be.
Interest & Readiness—Talk to your child to assess his or her readiness. Consider how your child became interested in going to camp and ask yourself the following questions. When you discuss camp with your child, does he/she sound excited? Is he/she comfortable separating from you for segments of time? Does your child enjoy playing with other children? Does he/she thrive on achieving milestones of independence? Answering these questions will help you determine if your child is both interested and ready for camp. Remember, the decision to go to camp should be made together. Keep in mind that the more involved children are in the process, the more ownership they feel. This helps ease concerns about camp and can help make a child’s camp experience more successful.
Day or Sleepaway—If you’re considering sleepaway camp, make sure your child has had successful overnights away from home with friends and relatives. Were these overnights positive experiences? You want to make sure your child is mature enough to go away for an extended period of time and that he/she can do certain things independently like showering, getting dressed and brushing their teeth.
Age—You want to consider your child’s age when considering camp. Day camps are designed for children 3 years and up. Children can go to sleepaway camp at the age of 7. But families should keep in mind that just because a child is 7-years old, doesn’t mean he/she is emotionally ready for sleepaway camp.
Expectations—You should learn about the camp program ahead of time and create positive expectations for your child. Talk about camp in the months leading up to the summer. When you can, go for a tour of the camp prior to the summer. Touring the camp will build your child’s excitement about camp while

Tomato, Cucumber & Onion Salad
Oven Roasted Green Beans
• 3 large tomatoes, cut into bite-size wedges • 1 large English (seedless) cucumber, washed and sliced • 1 small onion, peeled and sliced thin • Extra-virgin olive oil, to taste • Apple cider or balsamic vinegar, to taste • Dried oregano, to taste • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste
• 2 pounds green beans, ends trimmed • 3-4 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • Sea salt, to taste • Ground black pepper, to taste
In a large serving bowl, add the tomatoes, cucumbers, and onion. In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, vinegar, oregano, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over salad and toss. Serve.
Roasted Potatoes & Garlic • 3 pounds small red skin potatoes • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • Sea salt, to taste • Ground black pepper, to taste • 6-8 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 2 tbs. fresh parsley, chopped
Preheat the oven to 425°. Add green beans to a large bowl. Drizzle beans with extra-virgin olive oil, sea salt and pepper, toss. Spread out evenly onto a baking sheet. Roast beans, tossing once halfway through the baking time. Roast until beans are lightly caramelized and crisp tender, approximately 15 minutes. Serve. Note: You can add 3-4 crushed garlic cloves or sprinkle the beans with garlic powder before roasting if desired. And don’t forget to let your little ones help with snapping the ends off of the green beans! As always, Bon Appetit!
Preheat the oven to 400°. Cut potatoes in half and place into a bowl. Drizzle potatoes with the olive oil, then add salt, pepper, and garlic. Toss until the potatoes are well coated. Transfer the potatoes onto a baking pan and spread out. Roast in the oven for 40 minutes to 1 hour or until potatoes are golden brown and crisp. Flip gently twice with a spatula during cooking in order to ensure even browning. Remove potatoes from the oven, toss with the fresh parsley, season with a little more salt and pepper if desired, and serve.
