a letter from the EDITOR

T

his month is South Jersey MOM’s 100th issue full of parenting advice, inspiring stories and family events. The magazine is now in it’s 9th year, and going strong. In the last 4 years South Jersey MOM has doubled in size, that means more information for our readers. Moving forward as the new editor, I plan to make a few changes to connect with you the reader. I want to hear about your stories and next month I’ll be starting a new page, “Me & My Hero”. Send me a short paragraph via email about how your hero inspired you to be a better person. I may feature the both of you in an upcoming issue. This month’s magazine is full of great advice and articles. Don’t miss the featured camp article about Tall Pines “Your Summer Home Away From Home” (page 26) to learn

about the benefits of sending your kids to a day camp. This will be our kid’s 4th year attending Tall Pines and the benefits that I see are increased self-esteem and confidence as all the kids are encouraged to participate in sports and arts and crafts. In fact, I was helping our daughter clean her room this past weekend and I think I found throughout her room 6 camp medals that she won from camp competitions. These medals represent her accomplishments in sporting events; which are a very big deal, as she doesn’t participate in organized sports throughout the school year (this is by choice and all the bribes and coaxing can’t persuade her). She’s not a bad athlete she just thinks of herself as an artist and would rather be drawing & reading most days. Shifting gears… as the end of the school year approaches your kids may be on the Internet more than you would like this summer playing games or just surfing the web. Be sure to read “Under Your Roof: Tips for Safe Internet Use” (page 10) to learn how to set boundaries for your kids computer use while off from school. Lastly, check out “Changing Schools? Some things to consider...” (page 24) the article has some great ideas if you’re thinking about changing your child’s school. As always, I feel grateful that we can connect. Your new friend & fellow MOM,

Crystal Essence Deodorant Spray, Chamomile and Green Tea

I had to try the spray as I’ve been using Crystal Essence, Lavender rollon for a couple of years and I’m not a big fan of the wet feeling when first applying, but the product works so I have stuck with it. The mineral spray is non-sticky and smells great, but more importantly I don’t have that wet feeling when applying. I also love the spray in Lavender and White Tea. www.thecrystal.com, $5 June 2014 | 5

I

n this month’s column I’m spotlighting delicious Jersey tomatoes, and Bragg Liquid Aminos, which is a product that my family and I have used for many, many years, and one that we enjoy in a variety of dishes. I personally use it in place of salt and soy sauce. Some of the main reasons I love sharing about this product is that it has 16 Amino Acids, it’s Non-GMO, Kosher, and Gluten-free, and I believe it truly enhances the flavor of any recipe I add it too. So until next time, eat well, sleep well, live well. Here’s to our health!

Christina Rose’s Olive Oil Dip

(A recipe shared by my niece) • 1 loaf crusty whole-grain or semolina bread, sliced • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely minced • 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 1 tbs. balsamic vinegar • Bragg Liquid Aminos or sea salt, to taste • 1/4 cup tomatoes, diced small • 2 tbs. capers In a bowl, mix together olive oil, garlic, pepper flakes, vinegar, Bragg Liquid Aminos, tomatoes and capers. Pour dip into a shallow serving bowl and serve along side of bread slices. You may toast bread before serving, if desired.

Caprese Skewers with Balsamic & Olive Oil Drizzle • 1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes • Mini mozzarella cheese balls • Fresh basil leaves • Extra virgin olive oil, to taste • Balsamic vinegar, to taste • Bragg Liquid Aminos or sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste • Toothpicks

Thread a mini mozzarella cheese ball, basil leaf (fold in half if large) and a tomato onto a tooth pick. Repeat with remaining ingredients. In a small bowl mix together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Braggs and pepper. Drizzle dressing over Caprese skewers, serve. As always, Bon Appetit! the truth about

Today’s Modern Dads By Hogan Hilling

F

or the past twenty-six years the image of the modern dad I observed in my community and dad’s social network is a far different one than the media and Hollywood continue to portray in newspapers, magazines, television and movies. The breed of dads I have met are caring, nurturing, sensitive, compassionate men who chose to embrace a different approach to parenting then their own dads, while still keeping their masculinity in tact. I don’t mean any dis-respect to the past generation of dads but today’s modern dads have shown a tremendous amount of courage in redefining the image of fatherhood in a positive way. Today’s modern dad is not only a different breed of man, but he also lives in a different parenting climate, in which dads are more involved at home and also pro-active in their community. One of the most significant positive changes today’s modern dad has made is the choice to be the primary caregiver of the family. At-home dads have proven a man is just as capable as a woman to nurture and care for children; and also manage a household. The role reversal also proved to be a valuable asset for the women who relished the opportunity to pursue professional careers they worked hard to achieve and still be a mom. As the population of at-home dads and their comfort level to embrace the primary caregiver role increased so did the interest of the traditional working dads to change their attitude about their role as involved parents. In so doing, these modern day fatherhood pioneers set a higher standard of involvement for other dads to follow. One example comes from Jim DiCenzo, who I met in 1995. During a fatherhood workshop, one of the dads in attendance expressed his frustration about how unfriendly medical professionals and educators were to fathers. Jim replied, “If you would like a fatherfriendly environment, you need to act like a friendly father.” Jim’s comment was a wakeup call to millions of dads that have embraced and acted on with great success. Some examples include the following accomplishments: m Boot Camp for New Dads: An expectant dads class, which debuted in 1991, is now offered in 45 states. m Dad Clubs: One of the first debuted at an Irvine, California elementary school in 1994. Today, the Watch D.O.G.S Dads Club program is in 3,793 schools in 46 states; Al Pro Dad 1,164 Chapters in 45 States. Many other Dads Clubs operate independently under the PTA and PTO umbrellas. m National At-Home Dad Network debuted in 1996. Today the national organization has 3,200 members and 38 dad playgroups. Today’s modern dads have built an incredible support and network system for fathers to become the best parent they can be where they can connect and share their feelings and parenting dilemmas among peers. There is a newfound respect and faith for men as fathers, embrace the wonderful changes today’s modern dads have made to redefine the image of fatherhood, but more importantly, acknowledge that men have proven the loving, tender, devoted, masculine spirit of fatherhood is alive and well! Inspira Gentle Beginnings’ Midwife Explains

Vaginal Birth Aer C-Section a Safe Option for Many Women Lindsay A. Dauphinee C.N.M., M.S.N. Vaginal birth aer cesarean – or VBAC – refers to delivering a baby vaginally aer having another child by cesarean section. Historically, medical opinions about VBAC have gone back and forth. For many years, prevailing opinion held that once a woman had a C-section she would have to deliver all future babies that way. But VBAC has been more closely studied recently. Today, we know that many women can deliver vaginally safely aer C-section. Under the right circumstances, VBAC can be a better choice for both mother and child. Benefits include shorter recovery time, fewer postpartum complications and faster bonding and initiating of breastfeeding. Babies arriving through the birth canal also adjust better to breathing. And VBAC can be important for emotional reasons, especially for moms who are struggling with the outcome of a previous delivery. ere are small but significant medical risks. at is why all VBAC deliveries are scheduled in the hospital. Full resources are needed both for monitoring labor and to address any potential complications, immediately. Better candidates for VBAC include women whose C-section was required due to a breech baby or placenta position or when the baby wasn’t tolerating labor. Women with a specific type of scar on the uterus and those with a very short amount of time between pregnancies are generally not candidates for VBAC. Some women can even deliver by natural childbirth aer a section. e Gentle Beginnings team specializes in both – and has experience guiding an informed choice. Since every situation is unique, it is important to know your options and make an informed decision. Speak to your obstetrics team to get all the facts about VBAC.

Blow It! I

t was one of those times where a resourceful KIDFUN idea would really help. Waiting for food at a casual restaurant, we played “Blow It.” We tore a couple pieces from the straw wrapper and blew it, literally, across the table. See the fork and spoon there? It was a channel. And -- off they go! Who was going to blow it the furthest through the channel, Sari or Ryan? (funny picture of Ryan, I know!) ... It was fun for a short while but that’s what KIDFUN is all about...break up a potential moment of boredom with a quick idea. It worked! Tips For Safe Internet Use By Brie Latini

T

he Internet has revolutionized our world and brought it to our fingertips. Writing papers, discovering music, connecting with friends and reading the news has never been easier, but the Internet can also leave your children vulnerable to predators. These tips can help keep your children safe while still allowing enjoyment of the internet. • Keep your computer in a common area instead of in your child’s bedroom. • Explain to your child that family information such as your home address and/phone numbers is never to be given out online. • Activate parental controls to block inappropriate web surfing and monitor any use of chat rooms/forums. • Heavily monitor picture-sharing through sites such as Facebook, Twitter and InstaGram, and have a serious discussion concerning your expectations regarding the types of photos or videos your child might choose to share. • Instruct your child to never accept a friend request or chat invite from a stranger, even if the person in question comes across as being the same age. • Let your child know that he/she should never, under any circumstances, arrange to meet a stranger or invite a stranger to your home. • Set specific guidelines for the amount of time spent online, how often you’ll check up on usage, and be open about checking up on your children and the amount of “privacy” they’re entitled to under your house rules. There are warning signs that your child is engaging in at-risk behaviors online. Your child might: • Turn off the computer screen as soon as an adult enters the room. • Spend an exorbitant amount of time on the computer, especially at night. • Make or receive calls from numbers you don’t recognize. • Receive letters or gifts from an unknown address. • Seem secretive or withdrawn from the family. If you suspect that your child might be engaging in communication with a child predator, has received pornography or has been sexually solicited, contact law enforcement right away. Turn your computer off to preserve any evidence. The best way to prevent unsafe Internet usage is to set firm guidelines with your children, letting them know why these rules are necessary in a way that’s age- appropriate. Making your children aware of the dangers will facilitate more responsible Internet usage and allow your child to benefit from the world of knowledge that’s always just a click away. Oral Health Impacts Overall Health The connection between oral and overall health starts with the bacteria naturally found in the mouth. The body’s natural defenses, coupled with good oral health habits such as daily brushing, flossing, and regular visits to the dentist, help keep the potential harmful effects from these bacteria under control. When good home care is missing from the equation, these same bacteria can lead to oral infections like tooth decay and gum disease. Research suggests a possible relationship between oral and systemic health. Several of the diseases that might possibly have an association with gum disease are diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Small Problems Now Can Turn into Big, Expensive Problems Later A 2013 survey reports that more than one in three Americans delay dental care because of their financial situation. It’s true, dental work can sometimes be expensive, but not going to the dentist can cost even more in the long run. That’s why having dental coverage is crucial. Gum disease and tooth decay are gradual diseases that are highly preventable, but cannot be reversed. Problems can be addressed with fillings, crowns and root canals—which can be costly—but sometimes it’s too late and the only course of action is to extract the tooth. Regular dental cleanings and check-ups allow your dentist to determine if you are at risk, catching problems before they do any major damage to your mouth or your wallet. A study from the National Association of Dental Plans found that dental coverage increases the likelihood of visiting the dentist; patients with dental insurance were 49 percent more likely to have visited the dentist in the past 6 months. Delta Dental offers benefit plans that pay all or most of the cost for preventive care. Coverage options are listed at www.deltadentalcoversme.com.

Four Reasons to Take Advantage of Dental Coverage While it is generally understood that regular visits to the dentist are necessary for maintaining the health of teeth and gums, it is less commonly known that oral health plays a crucial role in one’s overall health. The value of dental coverage for a family is considerable. Here are some of the ways it can benefit you and your family. By Keith Libou, D.M.D., Chief Clinical Officer, Delta Dental of New Jersey

16 | June 2014

Your Dentist Can Help Spot Other Diseases A dental visit is a good first line of defense against both oral and potential general health issues. Dentists can look into a patient’s mouth and see not only tooth and gum problems, but also evidence of a large number of both acute and chronic medical diseases and conditions—such as nutritional disorders, blood disorders, diabetes, pernicious anemia, bulimia, and oral cancer—even in the early stages. Catching diseases early is the key to staying healthy, and avoiding future medical bills and higher insurance premiums. Oral Care is Crucial for Expectant Moms During pregnancy, many physical, emotional, and hormonal changes occur in a woman’s body. In addition to making that first doctor’s appointment, a newly expectant mother should also schedule a visit to her dentist. Increased hormones—specifically estrogen and progesterone—can cause several pregnancy-related dental issues, including gum diseases called “pregnancy gingivitis” and “pregnancy tumors.” These growths are not cancerous or contagious, but can be quite uncomfortable. A dental checkup and cleaning during the first trimester will allow the dentist to identify any problems that should be taken care of during the second trimester or early in the third trimester—the ideal time for dental work during pregnancy with regard to safety and comfort. For these reasons, it’s clear that maintaining good oral care during pregnancy benefits the mother, but studies have also shown that a pregnant woman’s oral health may be linked to her baby’s overall health. Navigating the world of dental insurance can be overwhelming. Delta Dental of New Jersey keeps it simple; we specialize in dental benefits and offer options that fit your family’s needs. This includes individual dental coverage options for New Jersey residents with the same type of benefits you may have enjoyed as part of an employer-sponsored plan. Plus, Delta Dental members enjoy access to the nation’s largest network of dentists, so if you have a dentist you like, there’s a good chance he or she is in our network. For information on dental benefits, visit www.deltadentalnj.com. Some things to consider...

know 2 grow

Changing Schools? By Kelly N. Moore, Psy.D.

will be meeting each other for the first time from different communities. Time of Year I think we can all agree that it probably best to change a child’s school at the very start of the school year. Teachers establish the classroom environment, culture, and practices that students are to abide by. They often spend the better part of the first few months of the school year ensuring that all the students “get it.” Also, students are becoming more acquainted with each other during the first few months and so it would benefit your child if he or she can have that same fresh start with their new peers. If this is totally unavoidable, perhaps starting a child after a winter break would be a good idea also.

T

he decision to move your child to a new school poses a great deal of questions about when and how to do so. Many times, parents have no choice about when the right time is because work demands/ changes may dictate the family relocation. Sometimes, parents make decisions to change their child’s school because of reasons related to quality of education, the school’s ability to address any special needs, or if there are general differences in the parents’ and school’s philosophy about the educational and/or social environment. After talking to a few of my teacher friends, here are a just a few things to consider when it’s time to transition your child to a new school.

Visit our website and sign up for our e-newsletter

Your child’s age If your child is a 1st or 2nd grader, there will probably be several “newbies” in their classrooms from year to year as young families get settled into their home districts. However, as kids get older, it is harder to be the new kid on the block. If your town’s middle and high schoolers do not all descend into a regional school as the ages progress, it is likely that the kids in the local high school have known each other for all of their schooling experience. This may create difficulty for new students in these age groups to make new friends. Keep in mind, however, that difficult does not equal impossible. This may be less of a problem if your town is one of many that head into one local regional high school where many kids

Special Needs If your child has any kind of special needs, it is important to know how your new school district will handle it. Though every school has special mandates and procedures, it is still very important to meet with their child study team, nurses, or other relevant administrators to ask questions and provide information about the needs of your child. This is especially important if you have had a less than pleasant experience at a previous school and it is a part of the reason you are changing schools in the first place. Share your challenges with the new team and stay involved as your child transitions. Final Points Transitioning your child to a new school does not have to be a scary experience for them or for you. Minimize any emotional challenges by including your child in the process. Explain to them why you are changing schools and establish good communication with new teachers, staff, and families in your new district. Though there may be some sadness or anxiety, you can make it easier by communicating with and supporting them, but also expressing your confidence that they can and will successfully manage entering new situations, which is an invaluable life skill.

Your Summer Home Away From Home:

E

Tall Pines Day Camp

ven though it’s June, and summer is right around the corner, there’s still time to enroll your child in summer camp. One of South Jersey’s premier summer camps, Tall Pines Day Camp in Williamstown, is a must-see for campers and parents alike. In a convenient, bucolic setting, with acres of enjoyment, 45+ diverse, exciting activities to choose from and a caring, family atmosphere, they offer more for your child than even most sleepaway camps. Andrew Yankowitz, Tall Pines Owner and Director, says it’s “your [child’s] summer home year after year.” Many local camps have all the bells and whistles that Tall Pines has. However, how about unique programs like School of Rock, horseback riding lessons and even speech services offered along with traditional fare? High above the national average, their phenomenal return rate for campers and staff is unsurpassed. Why, you ask? Andrew says they create a fun work environment for the staff who state that they don’t go to work; they go to camp. Since around 80% of campers and 90% of staff return 26 | June 2014

By M.B. Sanok

to camp each year, they become familiar and comfortable with each other and add to the happy, nurturing climate of the camp. An incredible 98% of Junior Counselors are former campers themselves, so they show the new crew the ropes and bestow that love for camp on to them. Seedling (half-day), Junior (ages 3-6), Middle (ages 7-9), Senior (ages 10-12) and Counselor In Training (13-14) Camps are available for your children. Several discounts are also available for those who qualify including a New Family Discount, Referral Fee Discount, Sibling Discount, Self-Transportation Discount and a $200 discount for active Military, Police and Firefighters. If you’d like to earn free tuition for your camper and hold a CDL license, become a camp van driver. Visit their website for further details on these desirable options. Building campers’ life skills starts with their own selection of activities they wish to participate in and developing and choosing the annual theme for one of their big summer events, Color War. Tall Pines connects with their campers online via Facebook in order to

get their input on what they hope to do during the summer. However, they emphasize disconnecting from technology while at camp and engaging in face-to-face activities with their fellow campers and staff. Everything is structured in such a way that the campers don’t even realize they’re working on new skills and interests or learning life lessons – they’re just having fun and making summer memories! As always, Tall Pines promises “every year something new,” and they will not disappoint this summer. With great anticipation from returning campers and staff, they welcome their brand-new 50-foot zip tower with twin 800-foot zip lines. Only in places like the Poconos and other resort areas can you find such exhilarating attractions. (Check out the thrilling video at this link http://www.tallpinesdaycamp.com/video/ zipline.php!) After you and your children watch the video, you’ll be pining for a turn yourself. Since successfully hiring a new ceramics instructor in 2013, they opened a new pottery studio this year that accommodates two kilns by converting an old campsite movie theater. So make Tall Pines Day Camp your child’s summer home away from home where they’ll learn lifelong skills, make lifelong friends and soak up summer sun and summer fun. To enroll or for more information, contact Tall Pines Day Camp at www.tallpinesdaycamp.com or (856) 262-3900.

South Jersey MOM asked Facebook friends to share a funny kid comment about dad… Kristin S-P: I was taking my 3 year old to a princess brunch. She said to me, “I am a

princess and you are a queen. So daddy’s a commoner and he can’t come, right?”

Katie M: We were in the store today and my son who is 5 wanted to get his Dad a present. He was walking up and down the aisles and said very loudly, “Do they have Beer here?

I know Dad likes his beer!”
