firecracker balloons! Get ready to celebrate the 4th of July next month with a bang and make this fun balloon craft with your children. Kids can twirl, shake, and wave their balloons and then pop them for a confetti explosion! You’ll need the following supplies to make one balloon: • 1 red, blue or white balloon • 1 plastic bottle with wide mouth (like Gatorade) • 1 striped paper straw • Tape, craft glue or hot glue gun • Confetti • Red, white and blue tinsel garland or ribbon Start by carefully cutting the plastic bottle in half with a scissors. Then pull the balloon over the bottle opening to make a funnel. Push a handful of confetti inside the balloon using the bottle “funnel.” Remove the balloon and blow it up; tie the end. Tape or glue the balloon to the end of the striped paper straw. To add more decoration, attach some tinsel garland with tape or glue, or tie ribbon around the balloon and straw. The balloon can even be decorated with star-shaped stickers. When the children are ready, pop the balloon and the confetti will burst out!. Louisa Kopp is a South Jersey mom and writer. Give Your Purse A MAKEOVER

Do you plunge your hand into an abyss when you need to find your keys, wallet or phone? It’s about creating a system that works and sticking to it. Here are some helpful strategies: Organize smaller bags within your larger bag. There are so many purse organizers available or you can use clear pouches for different categories: make-up, snacks/gum, nail file/clipper, pens/pencils, receipts, etc… Utilize inside pockets for phone and keys. Most handbags have multiple inside pockets to fit smart phones. Select a pocket for each and use consistently so you know where to reach. Keep only necessary keys on your key chain and use a key chain with a shape that you’ll recognize when you feel it.

Girls, On The Spectrum:

Flying Under the Radar? By Samantha E Gill

I

was at a birthday party recently with my daughter and her service dog. She has special needs and she is 5. I was talking to another mom and her daughter is 3. She was watching my daughter and we were discussing kids, motherhood and all “that stuff”. As she told it to me “this wasn’t her first rodeo.” She had been married for 30 years and has 3 grown children. She and her husband then fostered and adopted children and found themselves with little ones all over again, much to their true delight. Some of these children have delays and if there ever is a “super Mom”, she would get this title. She rocks. As she was watching my daughter she said, “I am wondering if that will be my little one at 5?” it was a rhetorical question. Our girls had a lot in common - actually a lot in common, hence this question. We were then quiet and watched our girls play side by side one another.

“We want them SOARING— NOT flying under the radar” I later thought to myself about our conversation and what we had in common. We had not only our girls signs and symptoms in commons we had a lot of venting and frustrations in common. We found that girls often, as we said, “fly under the radar.” We found ourselves shaking our heads in saying in unison things that people would say to us. How could this be? We weren’t sure. But we realized we had more in common than we did differences, which told us that there must be more people like us. True to form, I later found out that in (1.) April of 2015 there was actually a study done by The IAN Community at The Kennedy Krieger Institute that said just this very thing that her and I felt and discussed. It actually USED the EXACT words that WE USED that day at the party! Validation! Here’s what it found: 1.) It’s WRONG-- the: “There’s nothing wrong with her”: AND, It’s True, we really do hate hearing it. REALLY. It is cringe-worthy. And painful. Because we live it. Every. Day. Please 6 | June 2016

stop saying that. We realize you think you’re helping us and / or giving us “good news” but please stop it. We don’t drive hours to the best hospital and best Dr.’s and miss work and paychecks to be told this or to be told. 2.) “She looks PERFECTLY NORMAL” or “She’s too pretty/too cute!”: Looks have nothing to do with diagnosis. Because a child is “cute” it does not exclude them from having a diagnosis and it also doesn’t exclude their Mom or their Dad from having struggles. 3.) “The Witching Hour”: The research found that after 4pm, most exclusively that the behavior was at its peak. So the feeling that your child was so ‘good’ all day at school and then “exploded” once at home afterwards really wasn’t completely odd. It was something that a lot of families everywhere were experiencing, so much so that the study found that girls in particular were “flying under the radar” because of it and possibly be misdiagnosed. 4.) Girls don’t all do the line-up: The old fashion theory of lining up toys may not be applicable when it comes to girls. The study found actually with girls it may be leaning towards clothes, fashion, textures, and the such. (i.e. fabric and or style having to be a certain way, all of the time...) Like with my little one, she changes her clothes constantly, and she only likes certain fabrics, textures and shoes.

So what is this telling us? Are we damsels in distress? Quite the contrary actually! It means we’re finally on to something. It means that someone finally did research to validate what parents have been struggling with for some time and so have been young girls out there “On The Spectrum.” And with some more research, time and really educated teachers, therapists and open-minded Doctors and public, we can help and reach out to these girls and families and help them reach their goals and dreams sooner than opposed to later. We want them SOARING - NOT flying under the radar. (1.) “’Are Girls with Autism Hiding in Plain Sight?’ - Marina Sarris - Interactive Autism Network at Kennedy Krieger Institute - Date Published: April 29, 2015” Samantha Gill is a full-time geriatric social worker, a sometimes writer and a full time single mommy to Audrey, 7, and Addie, 5. Addie has mild brain abnormality, petit seizures, a rare lung disease and is on the Spectrum. Addie and her service Dog, Data, enjoy going to Pre-K together in Northfield, NJ, as well as, coloring and watching “Tangled.” Audrey dreams of sea otters, saving the planet, singing on stage in NYC, and is an Orange belt in Karate. I can’t dream yet as I have yet to take a nap, however, I hope to do this someday. My awesome tribe and I exist (loudly) in South Jersey. www.themighty.com/2015/04/the-amazing-doctor-who-found-a-unique-way-to-soothe-my-daughter

Is It Just The “Baby Blues?” W

e have all heard the expression “it takes a village to raise a child.” I have written in the past about women and couples going through infertility creating a support system during the process. That concept actually applies not only to individuals going through the infertility process but to all of us. Dr. Stephen Covey talks about interdependence in his best-selling book The 7 Skills of Highly Effective People. Another group that many people don’t think of as needing additional emotional support is new mothers. Whether it is a woman’s first child or her fifth there are a myriad of emotions and hormonal shifts that can occur during and after pregnancy. It is not uncommon to for a woman to experience the “Baby Blues” as early as a few days after delivering a new precious child. While many mothers ger support in the first month for things like feedings and diaper changing the need for emotional support for mom can sometimes be overlooked. Even more important is knowing that while “baby blues” may be normal full blown post-partum depression and even the less well known post-partum psychosis should not be dismissed. We all feel moments of overwhelm as parents. Children will definitely bring tears as well as moments of joy, but persistent feelings of fear, anxiety and overwhelm are not good for anyone and are a sign of a much greater problem. Left untreated these symptoms can be dangerous to mother and in some cases child. Knowing the signs can help. According to the Mayo Clinic postpartum depression can set in up to six months after delivery which is why many women have a problem seeking help. Symptoms can include: • Depressed mood or severe mood swings • Excessive crying • Difficulty bonding with your baby • Withdrawing from family and friends • Loss of appetite or eating much more than usual • Inability to sleep (insomnia) or sleeping too much • Overwhelming fatigue or loss of energy • Reduced interest and pleasure in activities you used to enjoy • Intense irritability and anger • Fear that you’re not a good mother • Feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt or inadequacy • Diminished ability to think clearly, concentrate or make decisions • Severe anxiety and panic attacks

“According to the Mayo Clinic postpartum depression can set in up to six months after delivery which is why many women have a problem and disorientation, obsessive thoughts about your baby, halseeking help” lucinations and delusions, sleep disturbances, paranoia, or at-

If you are having these types of emotions for more than a two week period seek help. Of course if you are feeling either of the following: • Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide Seek help immediately. Postpartum psychosis is rare but significantly more severe and sets in usually with a week of delivery. The symptoms are more critical and once again according to the Mayo Clinic include things like confusion

tempts to harm yourself or your baby. These symptoms require immediate medical attention. It can be difficult knowing where the line is and having a support system for both mom and baby is very important. Many women are afraid to speak up because they believe their feelings will be minimized. A new baby is a joy but can bring about many changes physically and emotionally. When in doubt get it checked out! You and your child are worth it.✲ Patricia Mooneyham coaches and educates women on personal confidence, sexual wellness and empowerment. Mommy Woes and Possible Fixes By Lisa Figueiredo

game of tag, or chasing a toddler are all ways to lose the baby weight. According to mother of two ages 9 and 11, Jessica Nowlan it can be a matter of achieving a better lifestyle. “I made some major food changes in my life about a year ago and lost about 30lbs. There’s diabetes on both sides of my biological sides so it was inevitable that I needed to cut sugar and carbs way down. Feeling better and weighing less gives me the motivation I need to make better food choices daily.

“It’s important to take time whenever possible for ourselves. Being well rested, can make a world of difference” Expecting Children to be Perfect When our children are born we instill our hopes and dreams in them. We want them to do better than we did in our journey in life. We want them to go even further and achieve great things. It’s easy to set the bar high, even compare your children to others. We need to understand are children aren’t perfect, and neither are we. Setting realistic goals, and triumphing over the little things; a good grade on a test, helping someone out a hit in their baseball game is a good way to motivate our children, without adding excessive pressure. Exhaustion Some days it may feel like there isn’t enough coffee in the world to combat the exhaustion that comes with a newborn, toddler or any child. Parenthood is exhausting especially when you have a newborn. The sleepless nights can be even worse when your child is sick, teething, having bad dreams. The interruptions to sleep, can leave you with “mommy brain.” While caffeine may be a temporary fix, it’s not a long term solution. One way to relieve some of the tiredness is to alternate days on who “sleeps in”. While it may only mean an hour or two of extra sleep, it can

12 | June 2016

make a world of difference. If you’re fortunate enough to have the option, you can alternate weekend days which one parent sleeps in while the other one watches the kids. If you’re really fortunate, your child can be watched by a nanny, relative or someone you trust while you catch up. Understandably, this may not be a practical solution for everyone. It’s important to take time whenever possible for ourselves. Being well rested, can make a world of difference. When my son was a baby, I tried to nap when he napped. We often feel asleep together. Going to bed at a decent hour, can also help avoid exhaustion. Feeling Fat Maybe, that pre-baby body wasn’t so bad after all. Most new moms can relate feeling the shock of a post baby belly, hips and thighs. When carrying a child your body goes through a lot of changes and you feel the aftermath. One solution to remedy this is to change the way you’re eating. Choose foods that are low in carbs and sugar and high in protein. It can be hard to lose the baby weight. We need to give our bodies time to adjust. Exercise is a good way to fight both exhaustion and burn calories. A long walk with your baby in tow, a

Doubting Mom Abilities As a new mom, it’s normal to doubt your parenting skills. It’s a whole new world for you, diapering, feeding, and bathing a tiny person. You may experience feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt about your ability to care for their child and even question your maternal feelings. In time these feelings do subside. It may help in joining mom groups online or even joining a playgroup with your child. Sometimes, there is comfort in feeling that others are in doubt and it is likely just the newness of the experience. In time, you will establish a routine and your confidence will soar. Time for Dad With the multitude of activities that both parents and children are involved in, it can be hard to make time for yourself much less the man in your life. We as mothers may have trouble taking time for ourselves, let alone making time to just be a couple. A date night is the perfect way to spend time alone together. It can be as simple as watching your favorite show or movie at home, or even a night out to dinner alone. According to Nowlan it’s about making time. “We have to literally put a “reminder” on the family calendar for us to have our time. We find it holds us a lot more accountable and consistent in making sure we at least get that half hour or hour in because by the time my husband gets home from work, I’m headed to bed to be able to get up before everyone in the morning and do it all over again. It really takes more work than what someone, a couple, would expect or anticipate. As many people say marriage is work so you have to make the time, put each other as a priority and connect.” With all the problems that come with being a mom, there is an overwhelming, immeasurable satisfaction in seeing your child happy, growing, learning and loving. For me, a as a parent there is no better feeling then seeing the love in my child’s eyes and watching him grow.✲

Time-Out Tactics By Angela De Groot

Y

oung children are curious explorers ruled by rollercoaster emotions. They learn by testing boundaries. Time-outs are a popular discipline method, yet many parents complain that they don’t work. These tactics will help make time-outs effective. Time-outs give children the time and space to calm down and switch gears while helping to discourage misbehavior. Choose a time when both of you are happy to explain what a time-out is – a quiet spot where she will go if she needs to calm down or if she does not follow the rules. List a few behaviors that will lead to a time-out, like hitting or tantrums. You can use a teddy bear to demonstrate how time-outs work. Recognize the difference between natural inquisitiveness and willful disobedience. In each situation consider whether a time-out is appropriate and whether what you are expecting from your child is reasonable. Grocery shopping close to naptime is a recipe for disaster. The time-out location should be somewhere your child can be monitored, but sit alone without distractions or entertainment. When your child earns a time-out, take him to that location immediately. Time-outs are most effective when given as the misbehavior is occurring. Don’t put time-outs off until it is more convenient or until you get home. At the grocery store, find a quiet aisle or a bench that will serve as the time-out location. Don’t yell. Remember, you are modeling behavior here. Don’t over explain. The point of a time-out is to remove your attention. Use short simple sentences like, “No hitting. That hurts. Time-out.” A lot of misbehavior is simple attention seeking. Scolding or over-explaining gives them attention and renders the time-out ineffective. Play deaf to the whining and the tantrums. If you are consistent, your child will quickly learn that there’s a better way to communicate. For very young children who may not be ready for solitary timeouts, find a place to time-out together. Tell her “we are going to sit quietly 20 | June 2016

until we feel better.” This familiarizes your child with the idea of walking away from overwhelming situations and at the same time disrupts the downward spiral of negative behavior. Some parents follow the minute-a-year time-out rule: two minutes for two-year-olds, three minutes for three-year-olds, and so on. However, kids are not cookie cutouts and parents will recognize what length of time their child will need to get back in charge of his emotions so that he can rejoin the family. Once the time-out is over, have a short chat to check if he understood why he was in time-out, then quickly move on. Don’t harp on and don’t hold it against him. Balance time-outs with time-ins. Reward your child with affection for her good behavior and choices. Invest in additional quality time doing something she wants to do - the payoff is a happy, well-behaved child. Time-outs work well in conjunction with other disciplinary techniques. When your budding Picasso strides, crayon in hand, toward your living room wall, say: “We don’t draw on the walls.” (prevention & boundary setting) “Here, draw on this paper.” (redirection) “Let’s color on the paper together.” (modelling) “I like how you are drawing on the paper. High five!” (positive reinforcement) “No drawing on the walls. Time-out.” The theory is simple, but putting it into practice can be difficult at first. Stay the course and be consistent. You and your little one will soon get the hang of time-outs, and you will find yourself having to discipline less often. Time-outs are effective up to age 6 or 7. After that, removing of privileges may get better results.✲

Fresh Is Best By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

Spring is such a rejuvenating and refreshing time of year. Trees budding, flowers blooming, birds singing -- yes, it’s the perfect time to make simple, light, healthy recipes.

Multigrain Spaghetti with Spinach Pesto

• 1 package multigrain spaghetti • 4 cups fresh baby spinach • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tbs. pine nuts • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste Cook spaghetti according to the package directions. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup of the cooking water. Meanwhile, in a food processor, puree 2 -1/2 cups of the spinach with the Parmesan cheese, olive oil, pine nuts, sea salt, and pepper. In a large bowl, toss the spaghetti with the spinach pesto, the remaining spinach and the reserved cooking water. Serve.

Asparagus Salad

• 30 stalks asparagus, washed, ends trimmed and discarded • 2 lemons, juiced • 2 tbs. apple cider vinegar (optional) • 2-3 tbs. extra virgin olive oil • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste Steam asparagus just until fork tender, then drain and dry the stalks before placing them into the refrigerator to completely chill. In a small bowl mix together the lemon juice, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper, set aside. Once asparagus is chilled, place them onto a serving dish and drizzle with the dressing. Serve.

Lemony Orzo & Spinach

• 1 (16 oz.) box orzo pasta • 1 cup fresh baby spinach • 2-3 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • 1-2 tbs. butter • 1/2 tsp. lemon zest • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice • Sea salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste Cook pasta according to directions on package, drain, and return pasta to pot with heat off. Add spinach, olive oil, butter, lemon zest and lemon juice. Gently toss ingredients together, add salt and pepper to taste, toss once more. Serve. As always, Bon Appetit! ✲

summer camp guide

Choosing a camp Last minute

By Jess Michaels, Director of Communications, American Camp Association, NY & NJ

D

o you regret putting off looking for a summer camp? Don’t worry, there are still some summer camps with availability for your child. And keep in mind that looking for a camp this summer for next year also has many benefits Here are some tips from the American Camp Association, NY and NJ on how to find a camp at the last minute. Call the Camp Director

◗ If you have a specific camp in mind, call the camp director and ask what

sessions are still open and if there is space in your child’s age group. to be flexible. Maybe you had the month of July in mind for camp but try to be open to the second session of camp programs. This may mean changing around vacation plans or trips to see grandparents but the more flexibility you have, the better chance you have of finding the camp you want at the last minute. ◗ Even with last minute camp decisions, parents want to make sure they are doing their research and choosing the right camp for their child. Ask the camp director about the camp’s philosophy and program. Does the philosophy of the camp match your families? Does the camp offer a program that is of interest to your child? Do you feel that the camp director is answering all your questions and happy to do so? You are forming a partnership with the camp director so you want to make sure you click with the director and feel comfortable leaving your child in the camp director’s care. ◗ Try

Not sure where to start? ◗ You can call the American Camp Association, NY and NJ at 212.391.5208 for free, one-on-one advice in finding a camp. The ACA, NY and NJ’s Camper Placement Specialist can help guide you in your decision and help narrow down the many summer camp choices. Talking to friends and neighbors is also a good way to find out about summer camps. But families should keep in mind that just because a camp is the right fit for your friends’ child, it doesn’t mean it will be the right camp for your child. Take their suggestions but make sure to do your own research. You know your child best. Summer 2017 ◗ It’s not too early to be looking for a camp for next summer. Looking this summer gives you the opportunity to go visit camps. Touring camps allows you and your child the chance to see what an actual day at camp

will be like and see the lake, pool, bunks and activity areas. Both day and sleepaway camps offer camp tours throughout the summer. A camp tour truly gives families a good feel about whether the camp is the right fit for their child and if you decide to send your child the following summer, he or she will feel part of the decision process. Looking Early Can Help You Plan Financially for Camp ◗ By touring camp the summer before and deciding on a camp almost a year before sending your child, you are able to plan financially for camp. Some camps offer early bird discounts for registering early or payment plans, allowing you to pay for camp over the year. You can also make camp part of birthday presents and holiday gifts over the upcoming year. Families can also inquire about sibling discounts for registering more than one child. Looking for a camp for your child? Contact the American Camp Association, NY and NJ’s Camper Placement Specialist Renee Flax at 212.391.5208/renee@acanynj.org for free, one on one advice in finding the right Accredited day or overnight camp for your child.✲
