Millville, NJ Dentist, Dr. George Kourakin, believes that many good deeds done each day are going unrewarded. “We all know negativity will not improve a situation, but complimenting or rewarding a job well done will actually prompt more of those good activities,” says Kourakin. Kourakin launched the Good Deed Contest in January 2012. It ends May 19, 2012. The contest is open to youths 18 years of age and under. Children are urged to join the Good Deed Contest by submitting an essay about a good deed they have accomplished. Kourakin will be giving away a brand new laptop computer to the winner who submits the best essay. Creating Memories: The Family Vacation rom all-inclusive packages and cruises to camping in a tent or trailer, vacations for families create lasting memories. Parents should decide whether to create an individual agenda suited to their family’s interests or choose package deals from travel agents or destination Web sites. Families can find discounts on most attractions and hotels at travel agencies or any motor clubs they belong to. Annual National Park Passes are available at travel agencies and online at www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm. For $80, four adults can see any national park free for a year. Children under 15 are admitted free. This opens up more than 2,000 federal recreation sites across America. If you are looking for educational experiences, national parks have a Junior Park Ranger program where 5 to 12 year olds receive free activity booklets enabling them to discover the importance of the park. The children are awarded patches or badges upon completion of the booklet. All United States National Parks participate in the Junior Park Ranger program. Airline flights tend to be cheaper when you leave midweek according to David Antrilli, Vice President of Travel Services at AAA South Jersey. Depending on how far in advance you book flights, you can shop around for prices. All children, even infants, require passports

when traveling internationally, Antrilli says. This includes cruises and island travel. You can obtain passports at the County Clerk’s office. Do this at least 6-8 weeks before leaving, or you might have to be a rush fee to get it in time. If your family enjoys cruises, but doesn’t want to spend money on airfare, Carnival Line has a ship that leaves from Baltimore, MD, according to Debbie Moore, Circle Travel Agency. All-inclusive cruises have wonderful features for parents, Moore says, like Kids’ Clubs. All cruise lines offers Kids’ Club supervision. Kids’ Clubs are for children around 3 years to teens and offer age-appropriate activities. On cruises, parents are provided with a schedule of children’s activities for each day. Parents can sign their children up for certain activities at specific times. Supervision is provided by ship counselors. “This service is included in the price of the cruise,” says Moore. Late night supervision of children will cost parents extra, however. Families seeking a less expensive vacation should consider staying at a campground. Whether camping in a tent or trailer, campgrounds offer an activity schedule for children, too. Just like cruises, campgrounds offer arts and crafts, water parks, sing-a-longs and dances.They also offer hay rides, campfires and
hiking adventures. You do not need to own camping equipment to enjoy the savings of camping. Many campgrounds offer family cabins for rent that sleep six. Barbeque grills are provided. All you need to bring are bed linens and towels. If you are looking for something unique and closer to home, Wendy Prater, Branch Manager of AAA South Jersey Sewell office, suggests family-oriented amusement park, Knoebels, in Elysburg, PA. It’s billed as “America’s largest free-admission park” and has pools and water slides. “It’s perfect for families watching their budget,” Prater says. Parking is free and tickets are sold in packets so parents can pace spending. Knoebels has roller coasters and adult rides from about $2 to numerous “kiddie rides” for about $.75. Knoebels has two campgrounds available and families need to stay a minimum of two nights. Parents should respect their child’s schedule. Do not overplan your vacation and research before you go. Know policies about carrying extra food and what facilities are available for families. And do not forget to plan for breaks while on vacation. Paint them with any background you like: mountains, beaches, oceans, national parks or theme parks – family vacations fill a life with memories.✲

Springtime Veggies & Healthy Recipes By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio
I
truly look forward to the month of March, the days begin to get longer as daylight savings time begins, and the sun is noticeably warmer. It’s the perfect time to focus on springtime veggies and utilize them in easy, healthy recipes. So for this month I’m sharing recipes that use asparagus and baby leaf spinach, because after all, Spring is the season to lighten up our meals since we tend to eat more hearty, comforting foods, during the winter. In South Jersey, beautiful produce is available at indoor farm markets, grocery and health food stores. Until the outdoor farm stands and markets open up, you can still get the vegetables you need to make these recipes for your family. Have a happy and healthy Spring! SPINACH SALAD
5 cups fresh baby leaf spinach 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries 1/2 sweet onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese 1/4 cup walnut halves Balsamic vinegar, to taste Extra virgin olive oil, to taste Sea salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste In large bowl, add baby leaf spinach, strawberries, onions, feta cheese and walnuts. Drizzle vinegar and olive oil over salad, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Toss ingredients together gently and serve.
SPINACH PITA PIZZAS
ROASTED ASPARAGUS
2 pounds fresh asparagus, washed and patted dry 5 – 6 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed Extra virgin olive oil Sea salt Freshly grated ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 400°. Snap or cut off the tough ends of the asparagus and discard. Place asparagus and crushed garlic cloves on baking sheet, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, toss to coat. Spread asparagus in a single layer and sprinkle with sea salt and pepper. Roast the asparagus for 25 – 30 minutes, until tender.
4 multigrain or whole-wheat pita bread Extra virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, finely minced 4 cups fresh baby leaf spinach 1/2 cup ricotta cheese (optional) 1 cup reduced fat mozzarella cheese Sea salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste Oregano, to taste Preheat oven to 400°. Place pitas onto a baking sheet and brush the top of each one with a little extra virgin olive oil, and a sprinkling of garlic. Add some fresh spinach to each pita, then add a few small spoonfuls of ricotta cheese on top of each and sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese. Drizzle a little more extra virgin olive oil over top of pizzas and season lightly with sea salt, black pepper and oregano. Bake pita pizzas for about 8-10 minutes or until mozzarella cheese melts. Serve.

Instead of spending them just to spend, consider selling those gift cards for cash via GiftCardGranny.com, a web site that allows you to choose the highest offer from a variety of reputable resellers. BOOKSHELF Swap, sell or donate used books and consider investing in an ereader to reduce book clutter altogether. Girls Scouts Celebrates 100 Years

ounded in 1912, Girl Scouts is celebrating 100 years as the preeminent leadership development organization for girls, with 3.2 million girl and adult members worldwide. To celebrate Girl Scout’s 100th anniversary this month, the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ (GSCSNJ) is hosting Women of Distinction (WOD), the Girl Leadership Summit and the Million Mile Challenge. The 2012 WOD are experts in their fields, innovators of unique programs and services and are role models and mentors to tomorrows generation of women leaders. All of this year’s honorees demonstrate that hard work and dreaming big are the keys for women and girls to succeed at achieving their goals. GSCSNJ’s annual Women of Distinction event is a celebration of women who exemplify excellence, leadership and accomplishment. The five WOD from the class of 2012 serve as exceptional role models for girls:

Hundreds of Girl Scouts throughout central and southern NJ are also participating in the Million Mile Challenge to focus on healthy living. Girls, volunteers and Girl Scout supporters sign up for the program and receive a pedometer to assist them in recording the miles they walked. Program participants work together to walk or run a total of one million miles. On Saturday, March 3, participants will meet at the Wildwood Convention Center and finish or add to their mileage goal. Girls will also have the opportunity to enjoy Zumba, safety demonstrations, bounce houses, crafts and more. “I am so proud to be a Girl Scout, especially as we celebrate 100 years of building girls who exhibit courage, confidence and character,” says Natasha Southerland, Chief Communications Officer (GSCSNJ). “When people think of Girl Scouts, they should think leadership– because that’s what the organization is really about. Not only do girls develop leadership skills they will use throughout their lives, but they form lasting friendships. In celebration of our 100th anniversary, the Girl Scout councils in New Jersey are joining together to host some amazing events.” The largest celebration slated for Saturday, June 23 is the B.I.G (Believe In Girls) event at Liberty State Park hosted by all four Girl Scout councils in New Jersey. The B.I.G. celebration will feature a concert with Sara Bareilles, Joe Jonas and Rachel Crow and a fantastic fireworks display. Girls can also look forward to a rock wall, photo booth, a living healthy cooking pavilion, obstacle course, “living” Statue of Liberty, bounce house, a past, present and future Girl Scout exhibit, a dance party and so much more. You may think “those homeschooling parents” are too controlling, and those kids are too overly sheltered to live in today’s world. These are common concerns when parents first investigate homeschooling as an alternative for their child’s education. However, after some research, many parents find homeschooling a viable option.

Why Homeschool? Parents homeschool their children for a variety of reasons. Carren Joye explains that she and her husband never considered homeschooling until one day he came home from work and raved about a co-worker’s articulate and well-behaved children. Upon further investigation, he found out the children were homeschooled. After a lot of research, Carren “tried” homeschooling their K4 daughter, and 16 years later, she has never looked back. “We loved it, and it fit our lifestyle perfectly,” says Joye, mom of four and author of Homeschooling More Than One Child: A Practical Guide for Families.

Homeschooling provides parents with alternatives to education. Deanna Frantz assumed her children would go to school. However, the more she read about homeschooling and the writings of John Holt, a supporter of school reform, she knew homeschooling would be a great fit for her family. “It made sense to continue to encourage my son’s natural curiosity and enable him to follow his own interests,” says Frantz, mom of two. Ask Questions When you begin to research the idea of homeschooling, it’s natural to be curious, skeptical and even overwhelmed. Talk to friends or relatives who homeschool and ask about their own personal journey. There are different methods of homeschooling as well as hundreds of different types of curriculums. Ask moms what curriculum they use for different subjects and why. What type of curriculum worked for their family and what didn’t work. As you know, every child is different and one curriculum may work with one child and won’t work with another child. “When I started homeschooling I thought it would fit in a perfect little box. I have tweaked curriculums, researched, and talked with other homeschooling moms. This
What about Socialization? The socialization question is probably one of the most often asked question when it comes to homeschooling. However, homeschooling children have many opportunities to spend time with other children. Homeschooling co-ops give children lots of experience with other kids. Children’s clubs such as scouts, team sports, church clubs and other activities provide children with a wealth of socialization. Typically, these children are used to interacting with a variety of ages compared to public school children who are age-segregated. Accountability Accountability can be a problem in homeschooling because life “happens” such as kids get sick, the refrigerator quits, or out-oftown guests come to visit. Consequently, it’s easy for mom to put off correcting all of the Math worksheets for the day or teaching the daily history lesson.Therefore, moms need to find ways to stay accountable. What to Do With Wee Ones? How do you teach school when you have younger children? Most younger children will want to try “school” when they see their older sibling working on schoolwork. Moms can spend intensive one-on-one time with an older child while the baby or toddler naps. Younger children can always sit in during a read-aloud time. Some families have special school boxes for their toddlers that have a variety of fun hands-on activities the toddler is only allowed to play with during school hours. What Are the Benefits? One of the benefits of homeschooling is the close relationship you build with your children.There are bound to be frustrating times when your child is struggling with a Math problem or has an attitude. However, the relationship you build with him will be invaluable as they grow older. Another benefit is that siblings have a stronger relationship with each other because they are not separated seven hours a day, five days a week. Your child is around you and is less likely to be negatively influenced than she would be in a normal school setting. Homeschooling provides families with flexibility in their schedules. If a family has an out-of-town guest come visit, certain school subjects can be finished at a later date. Additionally, you learn how your children learn. “One of the advantages of homeschooling is the oneon-one instruction that allows you to know immediately if your child understands the work,” says Joye. A child can also further develop her interest in any subject because you can do a unit study related to their interests. If your child loves animals, do a study on a different animal each week. Learn how to spell their name, where the animal lives and what kind of food it eats. Homeschooling is far from perfect and can be challenging. However, the benefits are varied and numerous.“I worry about how fast children are growing up these days and it brings me great joy to know that our boys are still able to be kids and not have the pressures that others are facing in the school system,” says McCollum.✲

issing from today’s curriculum is a subject most parents take for granted: cursive writing. Since technology has substituted less progressive conveniences, cursive writing has lost importance in the classroom and daily life. In fact, 46 states, including New Jersey, follow the Common Core State Standards which no longer requires teachers to teach cursive writing. Generally, schools feel this “lost art” takes away from the extra time and effort needed for students to learn and master core subjects like math and science. Depending on the teacher, your child may not learn cursive writing, traditionally taught in third grade. Once upon a time, children only used cursive writing. These days a child more likely learns how to type than write in script. With kids already adept at manipulating a Wii controller or hand-held video game, they get familiar with computers at a young age. Special needs children who experience writing problems end up typing on a computer or using a keyboard like AlphaSmart. It’s simply easier and less time-consuming to express their thoughts or complete a test or assignment using a keyboard rather than relying on illegible handwriting. However, cursive writing is not a novelty and offers more benefits than you might think. Benefits include fine motor skills development and improvement; reading and understanding historical documents and written correspondence; the ability to sign legal documents; and a faster, more fluid way of concretely expressing thoughts. Think of cursive writing as exercising the mind and increasing brain power. Learning to write in cursive develops and further improves a child’s fine motor skills, helping both typical children and those with neurological issues. Clutching the writing instrument, drawing the letters sequentially – both tasks involve those abilities. Some students even have less trouble with cursive than printing, cites a New York Times article. Experts fear a lack in reading skills if a child is not taught script. How will a child read and understand historical documents and handwritten correspondence without this instruction? Lelania, a Maple Shade mom says, “They should at least be able to read it.” Also, not using a cursive signature, a very personal identifying characteristic, will present future issues. “How will they sign their names if they don’t know cursive?” asks Beth, a Deptford mom. Forging the printed word is much easier than copying a cursive signature. Writing in cursive expresses thoughts in a clearer, more fluid way. The pen acts like a divining rod connecting all those thoughts directly from your hand to your brain. A CBS News report suggests that tracing or writing out words helps you learn them better and stimulates the memory. A 2009 University of Washington study, mentioned in The Economist, shows that students wrote faster with a pen/pencil than a computer when asked to write an essay in 10 minutes. So not only does it help you retain more information, it’s also a faster method of writing and taking notes.

Before you discard the idea, it’s worth teaching your child this “lost art.” Check out these easy and fun ways to teach kids cursive writing. Start out by strengthening children’s hands with activities from Squidoo.com: ripping up paper, cutting with scissors, picking up small objects with tweezers and molding with clay. Enroll them in programs like Handwriting Without Tears or instructing them by printing out worksheets from the Internet. Encourage them to practice writing for fun in clay, glitter, sand, snow and even pudding! Remember, practice makes perfect. Consider this. Just because children wear slip-on and Velcro shoes does not mean that learning to tie shoes is old-fashioned or useless, since many shoes still use laces to secure them. The same goes for cursive writing. Whether your child learns it at school or at home or as an extracurricular activity, for however long or intensive a course, it’s still a valuable skill to possess.Wouldn’t you want your child ahead of the curve rather than behind it?✲

Choosing Proper Footwear for your Child’s Overall Health
W
ith all the adorable clothing and accessory choices available for children, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important items in any child’s wardrobe: shoes. As any adult knows, wearing uncomfortable shoes can ruin a perfectly good day. Shoes that are too big, small, stiff or pinch at the heels, are torture.The same goes for children. Michael King, DPM, president of APMA states, “Starting at birth, parents should pay close attention to their child’s feet, from proper grooming to gait. This will ensure a solid foundation to prevent bone, leg, back and muscle problems later in life.” Will buying proper footwear break the bank? The American Podiatric Medical Association (AMPA), the leading organization for podiatric medicine and surgery, reminds parents, “While price isn’t necessarily indicative of quality, certain shoe characteristics are better for growing feet.” Whether you purchase shoes at a local superstore or specialty boutique, there are four main tests of quality. Quality Tests • The shoe should have a stiff heel; pressing on both sides of the heel counter should not make it collapse. • The shoe should be relatively flexible, not too stiff or too flexible in the toe-box area, bending naturally with the foot. • The shoe should have a rigid middle that never twists. Also, the shoe should be relatively light since “a heavy shoe can make your child walk irregularly, preventing the development of a normal walking pattern” (AMPA.org). But what about one of the essentials of shoe-comfort: arch-support? According to the AMPA, “Surprisingly, arch support is not important for the smallest children. Infants and toddlers have flat

feet, made of cartilage, so they do not start developing arches until their early preschool years.” Should infants wear shoes? Dr. Harris L. Klear of Burlington County Podiatry Associates warns, “Because the feet of young children are soft and pliable, abnormal pressure can easily cause deformities.” He advises to cover baby’s feet loosely since “tight covers restrict movement and can retard normal development.” How often should children’s feet be measured? The AMPA recommends getting a child’s feet measured every few months (2-3 months until toddlerhood and every 3-4 months after) as children’s feet grow at similar rates. “Fit matters because a child’s foot is not fully formed until the teen years, and the most critical foot development occurs in the first seven years,” explains Sharon John, Stride Rite Children’s Group President. Take time to try on shoes in the store to look for signs of irritation, as each style fits differently. Try on shoes with the socks or tights with which they will be worn. Buy for the larger foot since two feet are rarely the same size. Never buy shoes that need a “break-in” period; if they do not feel comfortable in the store, they probably will not become comfortable later. How do I know if a shoe is worn-out? As for shoes already sitting in the closet, monitor the wear-and-tear of the heels. Shoe heels may wear out quicker than the entire shoe, and uneven heel wear may indicate a foot problem that should be checked with a podiatrist. If finances allow, never accept hand-medown shoes since they are molded to another child’s gait; moreover, sharing shoes can spread fungi like athlete’s foot and nail fungus since children’s feet perspire twice as much as adult’s feet. taking ONE LITTLE STEP for cerebral palsy By Mimi Rosa y husband and I set out eight years ago to have our first baby. It wasn’t easy; my pregnancy was a mono-amniotic twin pregnancy. I lost one of the babies at 20 weeks and the other was born at 29 weeks, weighing 2 pounds 6 ounces. We named our miracle baby Dominique, which means “of the Lord.” Dominique was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) at 15 months of age when she was not meeting any of her milestones. She started with traditional therapies and interventions. She had eye surgery at 1 year old and leg surgery at 2 years old. It was at this point that we began to question the traditional road of care for a child with CP. So much surgical intervention and medication was not the option we wanted to choose for a lifetime of care for our daughter. Dominique is a VERY happy, healthy, and social little girl who is cognitively very aware of everything around her and tries very hard to communicate with others. She is currently learning to use a speech output communication device. Her smile lights up the room and her laughter is the most contagious. We are very aggressive with Dominique's care and have done a lot of research to find alternative natural methods of helping our daughter. Dominique will have

Cerebral Palsy for the rest of her life. We wanted to find a road where she would be comfortable, making an effort to learn to move without more surgeries and pain. We want Dominique to be as independent as possible while accepting whole heartedly that she may never do certain things. We read an article on The Feldenkrais Method and began lessons with Dominique in November 2003. It’s clear Dominique is much more comfortable in her own body. She is learning to move better. As Dominique is becoming more aware of her movement, she is developing her ability to self-regulate, to control her movement, enabling her to assist in her transitions. Little steps are very significant in Dominique’s life and they matter tremendously to her and to us. We are very happy with the Feldenkrais Method, as it was the quality of care we were seeking for Dominique. To know that we can avoid future surgeries and pain for our daughter is a wonderful thing. Being pleased with the Feldenkrais Method, in 2004 we began a nonprofit organization called One Little Step to benefit children like Dominique, who have very special needs. Let Children Play! H
ow many of you reading this were literally forced out of your house as children to play for 2-3 hours at a time to do, whatever? My guess would be most of you. Today, how many grown-ups force their children to play outside for 2-3 hours at a time with no specific “play-date” or plans? My guess would be very few. Why is this? Last winter we had over 40 inches of snowfall in the Philadelphia area, yet in my cute little cul-de-sac with school aged children in most every house – I did not see one snowman. There I was shoveling my driveway outside, while all the children in our neighborhood were inside watching TV, playing video games, on the Internet or texting. Including my kids, by the way. In the book “The Power of Play: How Spontaneous, Imaginative Activities Lead to Happier, Healthier Children,” author David Elkin outlines how childhood traditions are going the way of the dinosaur: Hop scotch, jump rope, hide and seek, and games we played as kids are being forgotten. At Liberty Lake Day Camp, some of the most popular activities are “old school” playground games like Wall Ball, Ga-Ga (a form of dodgeball) and 4-Square –
because kids have never, ever played them before! A third of schools in the USA have less than 20 minutes of recess per day. And forget about after-school, with hours of homework, sports practice, karate, dance and music lessons, when is there even time to play? We have created a society that limits play for our children. Too many parents have irrational fears that their kids will get “snatched” outside. According to Lenore Skenzay, author of Free-Range Kids, statistics show the world is actually a whole lot safer than it was back when we were kids because every kid over 10 has a phone/camera/video camera. Another threat to free play is organized sports – just because children play sports, does not mean they know how to play (or eventually work) with one another. The Kaiser Family Foundation study on “screen time” found that children age 8-18 years old spend an average of seven hours, 38 minutes devoted to screen time each day. This translates to an average of more than 53 hours per week! Today’s children have the lowest rates of play ever; coupled with the highest rates of depression – coincidence? And as we hear every day, 1/3 of American children are considered obese. If they played outside
By Andy Pritikin like we did, instead of video games and computers, this would probably be different. In many ways, summer camp has become the antidote to modern society. Campers come to places like Liberty Lake so parents know they are safe, and so kids can flourish, learning the real-life skills schools do not teach for their tests. 21st Century competencies like creativity, collaboration, responsibility, leadership, critical thinking, communication, adaptability, flexibility, and what it means to be a good friend. Summer Camp is a step back in time – no cell phones or video games – where “social networking” involves actually speaking to people face to face and being someone’s “friend” is more than an online experience. Camp is the real deal, and without their parents around, children learn the kind of social independence many kids will not experience until they go away to college. Most of all, children learn to play, just like the old days. They get to enjoy their childhood, doing things children have done for thousands of years – playing with one another…outside! We need to give our children as much sunshine as we can while they are young – because as we know, they are going to need it later!✲
