THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Jefferson City Parks & Recreation Foundation Jefferson City is home to an award winning Parks and Recreation Department. As the capital city of Missouri, maintaining our local parks and recreation facilities and implementing programs to meet the ever changing needs of our community and its visitors is a challenge. The J eff er s o n C it y P ar ks a n d Recreation Foundation strives to provide additional resources to leverage taxes, fees and grants to enhance our parks and recreation services. Over the years, civic minded individuals and organizations have maintained a tradition of enhancing the quality of life for their families, friends, and neighbors through generous donations to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation system. In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation was formed to provide continuing leadership and foster the expansion of parks and recreation services in Jefferson City. The Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the value of parks and recreation - both passive and active - not only for individual growth and development, but also for a strong family unit and for making our community a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit. If you believe, as we do, that wholesome recreation pursuits make individuals more productive in their homes and communities and lead to a healthier and happier life, please commit your support to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation. Land, trees, fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees for youth programs are all gifts that can make a difference in people’s lives. Any and all size of gifts to our community are appreciated and contribute to the livability and quality of life of Jefferson City. For more information on how you can make a tax deductible contribution of land, money, or other gifts, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director William Lockwood at 634-6482.
Equal Opportunity As a recipient of federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission and the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation operates programs subject to the nondiscrimination requirements of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Under Title VI, the U.S. Department of the Interior strictly prohibits discrimination because of race, color, or national origin in its federally assisted programs. Any person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any program or facility of the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation, or desires further information regarding Title VI, should write immediately to: The Office for Equal Opportunity U.S. Department of Interior Office of the Secretary Washington, D.C. 20240
Bleeding Policy In any Parks and Recreation program, a participant who is bleeding or who has blood on his/her clothing shall be prohibited from participating further in the activity until appropriate treatment has been administered. Appropriate treatment may include bandaging as necessary to prevent recurrence. This policy has been implemented to protect the participants, coaches, staff, and their families from diseases transported through the accidental contact of tainted blood. If medical care is needed, the participant must leave the activity until the problem situation has been resolved. A 70% isopropyl alcohol solution must be used to disinfect the skin and clothing. All infected areas must be thoroughly cleaned before this individual is allowed to continue participating in the activity. This may require that the player remove affected clothing and replace it in order to be able to continue participating. All participants should bring an extra shirt, pair of pants/shorts, and socks to each activity to change into in the event a blood incident should occur.
Sponsorships The Parks and Recreation Commission believes that no youth should be denied access to Parks and Recreation programs for financial reasons. The Parks and Recreation Foundation makes recreation sponsorships available to those who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in organized recreation activities. Those seeking sponsorships will be asked to complete a Recreation Sponsorship Application Form available through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sponsorships are generally limited to those receiving benefits from a form of public assistance as designated on the application form. Sponsorship funding is limited to $200 per individual per calendar year and is restricted to ongoing programs conducted by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized programs of short duration conducted by non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics) are ineligible for sponsorship funding. All application forms requesting funding for youth programs must be signed by the parent/guardian of the prospective participant. Participants/parents must pay a minimum of 20% of the registration fee for programs for which sponsorship assistance is requested. Questions concerning this service may be directed to Phil Stiles at 634-6482.
The views of any program or activity advertised within this guide and sponsored by any organization other than the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department do not necessarily reflect the views of the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department.

97% of Missouri residents feel that healthy childhood development is an important benefit of Parks and Recreation.
Yo u t h s po r t s C a m p & s w i m m i n g l e s s o n s i n o n e If you would like your child to take swimming lessons and attend camp, now you can. All you need to do is register for the coordinating weeks for the Youth Sports Day Camp and morning swimming lessons at Ellis-Porter/Riverside Pool (which are listed below). Depending upon the number of children enrolled in swimming lessons, a counselor(s) will escort them to the lessons, stay at the pool to chaperone them and then bring them back to camp when the lessons are over.
On-line registration is not available for these lessons since it will show as a conflict with Youth Sports Camp time frames. You will need to know your child’s skill level at the time of registration. See page 25-26 for swim lesson details. The following weeks of camp will coordinate with the following sessions of lessons: Week 4 & 5 camp 605371-04 & 605371-05 Week 7 & 8 camp 605371-07 & 605371-08 Week 9 & 10 camp 605371-09 & 605371-10

THEATER & ARTS CAMPS Showdown Academy
F I N E A RTS T H E AT E R C A M P The Fine Arts Camp is a fun and challenging atmosphere to enjoy theater. The camp combines art, dance, drama, and music to help your child develop their artistic talents. For grades 3 through 5, the camp will be held from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.. These children break into small groups to work with each of our four artist/teachers in dance, music, drama, and visual arts. For grades 6 through 12, the camp will be held from 12:30 4:00 p.m. This is a theater workshop, and all campers will work on a musical presentation. In addition to their dramatic role, campers will participate in costume and set design, orchestration and other components involved in theatrical productions. A performance by the campers will be presented to family and friends on Friday, July 26.
Showdown is a totally unique theater camp designed with and for teens, and led by working Hollywood professionals. We use the performing arts as a way for teens to wake up to who they are, discover who they can be, realize their personal power and change into the person they choose to become. This is an intensive, three week adventure into theater for 6th graders to 20 years old. It begins with morning classes where students study acting, directing, composing, stage movement, musical theater, dance, stage craft and playwriting. Afternoons are devoted to rehearsals for the full production. Cindy Marcus, Flip Kobler and Dennis Poore are from Los Angeles and are writing a new Totally Teen show for the teens of Jefferson City. The teams' other Totally Teen shows: BROTHER'S GRIMM, USHER, JECKYL AND HYDES, THE ARGONAUTS and NOTTINGHAM have been published with Pioneer, the premiere house for young people's theater. Call 634-6482 to schedule your water and sun safety class. This is a FREE program.
Research confirms that physical activity enhances the learning process in children. Recreational activities are powerful ways to refine children’s social, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
