Photo Policy

These photographs are for Parks and Recreation publications, flyers, brochures, program guides, TV programs, or advertisements. All photos and videos are for Parks and Recreation use and become the sole property of the Department.
Cancellations Decisions regarding morning programs will be made by 8 a.m. and announced as quickly as possible thereafter. Decisions on the cancellation of evening activities due to inclement weather will be made by 3:30 p.m. daily, when possible. The Activities Hotline (634-6485) will be updated as frequently as necessary when weather is a consideration. Please listen for extension listing.
Gift Certificates LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT GIFT? How about a Parks and Recreation Gift Certificate? Available at our office in the City Annex, Parks and Recreation gift certificates can be purchased for as little as $5 and are good at any of our facilities or toward the registration fee for any program. THEY SPEND LIKE CASH AT ANY PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITY! If you have a golfer, skater, swimmer, ball player, camper, or even a couch potato who needs to get up and get active, what would be a better gift?
Fragrance Free Policy The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission respectfully requests and encourages all patrons attending or participating in any Parks and Recreation meeting, special event, facility or program remain as fragrance free as possible by not wearing perfume, after shave, scented lotions, fragranced hair products and/or other similar products. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Jefferson City Parks & Recreation Foundation Jefferson City is home to an award winning Parks and Recreation Department. As the capital city of Missouri, maintaining our local parks and recreation facilities and implementing programs to meet the ever changing needs of our community and its visitors is a challenge. The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation strives to provide additional resources to leverage taxes, fees and grants to enhance our parks and recreation services. Over the years, civic minded individuals and organizations have maintained a tradition of enhancing the quality of life for their families, friends, and neighbors through generous donations to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation system. In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation was formed to provide continuing leadership and foster the expansion of parks and recreation services in Jefferson City. The Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the value of parks and recreation - both passive and active - not only for individual growth and development, but also for a strong family unit and for making our community a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit. If you believe, as we do, that wholesome recreation pursuits make individuals more productive in their homes and communities and lead to a healthier and happier life, please commit your support to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation. Land, trees, fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees for youth programs are all gifts that can make a difference in people’s lives. Any and all size of gifts to our community are appreciated and contribute to the livability and quality of life of Jefferson City. For more information on how you can make a tax deductible contribution of land, money, or other gifts, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director William Lockwood at 634-6482.
Equal Opportunity As a recipient of federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission and the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation operates programs subject to the nondiscrimination requirements of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Under Title VI, the U.S. Department of the Interior strictly prohibits discrimination because of race, color, or national origin in its federally assisted programs. Any person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any program or facility of the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation, or desires further information regarding Title VI, should write immediately to: The Office for Equal Opportunity U.S. Department of Interior Office of the Secretary
Bleeding Policy In any Parks and Recreation program, a participant who is bleeding or who has blood on his/her clothing shall be prohibited from participating further in the activity until appropriate treatment has been administered. Appropriate treatment may include bandaging as necessary to prevent recurrence. This policy has been implemented to protect the participants, coaches, staff, and their families from diseases transported through the accidental contact of tainted blood. If medical care is needed, the participant must leave the activity until the problem situation has been resolved. A 70% isopropyl alcohol solution must be used to disinfect the skin and clothing. All infected areas must be thoroughly cleaned before this individual is allowed to continue participating in the activity. This may require that the player remove affected clothing and replace it in order to be able to continue participating. All participants should bring an extra shirt, pair of pants/shorts, and socks to each activity to change into in the event a blood incident should occur.
Sponsorships The Parks and Recreation Commission believes that no youth should be denied access to Parks and Recreation programs for financial reasons. The Parks and Recreation Foundation makes recreation sponsorships available to those who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in organized recreation activities. Those seeking sponsorships will be asked to complete a Recreation Sponsorship Application Form available through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sponsorships are generally limited to those receiving benefits from a form of public assistance as designated on the application form. Sponsorship funding is limited to $200 per individual per calendar year and is restricted to ongoing programs conducted by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized programs of short duration conducted by non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics) are ineligible for sponsorship funding. All application forms requesting funding for youth programs must be signed by the parent/guardian of the prospective participant. Participants/parents must pay a minimum of 20% of the registration fee for programs for which sponsorship assistance is requested. Questions concerning this service may be directed to Phil Stiles at 634-6482.
The views of any program or activity advertised within this guide and sponsored by any organization other than the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department do not necessarily reflect the views of the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department.

LATE FEE DEADLINE
C a m p a n d sw i m m i n g l e s s o n s i n o n e If you would like your child to take swimming lessons and attend camp, now you can. All you need to do is register for the coordinating weeks for the Youth Sports Day Camp and morning swimming lessons at Ellis-Porter/Riverside Pool (which are listed below). Depending upon the number of children enrolled in swimming lessons, a counselor(s) will escort them to the lessons, stay at the pool to chaperone them and then bring them back to camp when the lessons are over. On-line registration is not available for these lessons since it will show as a conflict with Youth Sports Camp time frames. You will need to know your child’s skill level at the time of registration. See page 26 for swim lesson details. The following weeks of camp will coordinate with the following sessions of lessons: Week 3 & 4 camp 605371-03 & 605371-04 Week 6 & 7 camp 605371-06 & 605371-07 Week 8 & 9 camp 605371-08 & 605371-09

THEATER & ARTS CAMPS Showdown Academy Showdown is a totally unique theater camp designed with and for teens, and led by working Hollywood professionals. We use the performing arts as a way for teens to wake up to who they are, discover who they can be, realize their personal power and change into the person they choose to become.
F I N E A RTS T H E AT E R C A M P The Fine Arts Camp is a fun and challenging atmosphere to enjoy theater. The camp combines art, dance, drama, and music to help your child develop their artistic talents. For grades 3 through 5, the camp will be held from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.. These children break into small groups to work with each of our four artist/teachers in dance, music, drama, and visual arts.
Showdown Academy is an intensive, three week adventure into theater for 6th graders and older. It begins with morning classes where students study acting, directing, composing, stage movement, musical theater, dance, stage craft and playwriting. Afternoons are devoted to rehearsals for the full production. Cindy Marcus, Flip Kobler and Dennis Poore are from Los Angeles and are writing a new Totally Teen show for the teens of Jefferson City. The teams' other Totally Teen shows: BROTHER'S GRIMM, USHER, JECKYL AND HYDES, THE ARGONAUTS and NOTTINGHAM have been published with Pioneer, the premiere house for young people's theater.
For grades 6 through 12, the camp will be held from 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. This is a theater workshop, and all campers will work on a musical presentation. In addition to their dramatic role, campers will participate in costume and set design, orchestration and other components involved in theatrical productions. A performance by the campers will be presented to family and friends on Friday, July 27.

Visual Art Academy By Kathleen For youth ages 7 to 14, the Visual Art Academy classes consist of hands on painting, drawing, cartooning, clay and many other mediums taught by local professional artists and art teachers. There will be an approximate 12 to 1 student to teacher ratio. Students will break into groups and work with different mediums and instructors throughout the day. The classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the airconditioned McClung Park Pavilion. Supervision will be available at 8 a.m. and after class until 4 p.m. sharp. Each student needs to bring a brown bag lunch and drink. The students should wear clothes that art material will not harm. HIKING AND BIKING JEFFERSON CITY GREENWAY TRAIL SYSTEM Have you heard the word ‘greenway' and wondered what it means or what it is? The term ‘greenway' is synonymous with the wide ‘sidewalk' or linear park running through Jefferson City near Wears Creek. A Greenway system includes small strips of land, typically beside a road or stream, and parcels of land maintained in a natural condition where development is limited. Pathways for public use connect the strips and blocks of land. The greenway is a multi-use trail designed to provide a safe alternative to walk, jog, bike, or skate away from busy city streets. There are approximately 14.4 miles of greenway trail throughout Jefferson City providing additional opportunities for outdoor recreation, relaxation and enjoyment. See the inset box to the right for specific trail sections and lengths. The greenway trail system is always expanding by connecting parks, neighborhoods, schools and businesses throughout the city. If you would like more information on the Jefferson City Greenway, if you have ideas on where or how the greenway should be extended, or if your organization or neighborhood can provide volunteer labor or funding, contact the Parks and Recreation office. We are always working to make Jefferson City a nicer place to live. Future Greenway Development Bid and Construction Phase: Ellis Porter/Riverside Park to the Lewis and Clark State Office Building. This section is currently under construction and will add approximately .7 of a mile to the overall Greenway Trail System. Look for this section to be completed spring 2012. Leslie/Stadium/Lafayette round-a-bout through Aurora Neighborhood Park. Construction of this 1.1 mile addition is scheduled for the spring and summer 2012. This new section will expand along the east branch of Wears Creek and will connect Aurora Park, residential neighborhoods, the Knowles YMCA and Jefferson City Public School property with the existing greenway trail through Lincoln University campus and Community Park to East McCarty Street.
