April offers up COVID dinosaurs, teen rockers, wise wizards and vengeful princes

THE BUBBLE

The only pandemic-infused work of cinema I’ll ever recommend is this satirical, whimsical show from the firecracker mind of Judd Apatow. It's so maddeningly ridiculous - a group of selfindulgent actors filming the sixth movie in a dinosaur franchise are stuck on set together during quarantine. Chaos prehistorically ensues. It’s dangerously deadpan, outrageous and ostentatious. I archeologically dig it. With Karen Gillian, Pedro Pascal, Iris Apatow, David Duchovny, Keegan-Michael Key and Kate McKinnon leading the ensemble, the show is a caricature of big-budget blockbusters, showing the humanity behind the heroes. This is one for the Ice Ages.

NETFLIX 4/1 FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE

It’s time to taste the potions of the wizarding world once again. This time, the wonder of the Harry Potter-verse is transporting us back to learn more about the growth of, and unlock the mystery behind, beloved headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Jude Law once again shifts back into the role of the wise wizard trying to stop the darklygifted Gellert Grindelwald from gaining control of the magic world. Eddie Redmayne returns as nerdy yet brave magizoologist Newt Scamander. We’ll all be soaring on our Nimbus 3000’s when this film opens

IN THEATERS 4/15 THE NORTHMAN

Alexander Skarsgård is utilizing his tree-swinging Tarzan strength as a Nordic prince out on a quest to avenge his father’s death. The film is set in the gorgeous backdrop of 10th century Iceland, based on the Scandinavian tale Amleth, which inspired Hamlet. Ethan Hawke and Nicole Kidman play parents as king and queen. Of course we already know daddy royal dearest gets assassinated early on by a forest full of arrows, jolting forth the savior complex plot. Anna Taylor-Joy also stars as cunning white witch Ogla, who helps the harrowed hero on his journey.

IN THEATERS 4/22 METAL LORDS

From Valyrian steel swords to drumsticks, D.B. Wiess and David Benioff are not shy in traveling through different cinematic worlds. Their latest venture is a School of Rock-esque teen comedy about hopeful kids trying to win the coveted Battle of the Bands. Joe Manganiello, Jaeden Martell, Brett Gelman, Sufe Bradshaw and Katie O’Grady star. I wonder if the school politics will get as bloody as they did in King’s Landing. Get ready to rock out!
