THE PASSENGER by Cormac McCarthy

After a sixteen-year hiatus since winning the Pulitzer Prize for The Road, Cormac McCarthy stunned the publishing world by announcing two books coming out this fall. Last month, he released The Passenger, the first in a two-part series about Bobby Western, a diver investigating a sunken jet while haunted by his past. In the sequel, twenty-year-old Alicia Western, a doctoral candidate, is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Through her psychiatric transcripts, Alicia ponders her life and the purpose of life while refusing to talk about her brother Bobby.

FUNNY GIRL by Nick Hornby

Set in 1960’s London, Funny Girl is a lively account of the adventures of the intrepid young Sophie Straw as she navigates her transformation from provincial ingénue to television starlet amid a constellation of delightful characters. Insightful and humorous, Nick Hornby’s latest does what he does best: endears us to a cast of characters who are funny if flawed that forces us to examine ourselves in the process.

HOW TO TALK TO YOUR CAT ABOUT GUN SAFETY by Zachary Auburn

Parenting is difficult, to say the least. Not just human parenting, but also pet parenting. Can you imagine how much easier these daunting, ball-and-chain blessings would be if there were a guide? Well, look no further (for pets, at least)!! This guide covers everything from abstinence, the dangers of Satanism, and of course, gun safety. Considering that cats don’t have hands, but instead paws and toe beans, gun safety for cats is often not spoken about. It is time to educate and grow as a community, and this guide is the perfect jumping off point.

NOVELIST AS A VOCATION by Haruki Murakami

Murakami is simultaneously a giant hipster and the most humble creative in the world. This book balances that tightrope in an amazing way. Beyond novels, this book is a journal of essays on what it is to be a writer. For any writer participating in NaNoWriMo, this book is inspiring and an encouraging reminder that writing is an art that must be practiced. For writers not participating in NaNoWriMo, join us next November!
