NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | EDITOR'S CORNER

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR L

et's be honest: there's not a whole heck of a lot going on in January. Sure, there's the beginning of the new year and all that, but event-wise, it's a bit of a slow drip for the tri-state. Well, at least until the 28th when none other than the world's biggest comedian comes to the Ford Center. Kevin Hart, that is. The superstar's "Irresponsible Tour" will close out the month with a bang and set the stage for a fantastic February featuring three more great stand-ups - Jim Gaffigan, Bill Engvall and Rodney Carrington. Legends of the comedy circuit, they'll keep the laughs coming in downtown

Evansville with performances at the Old National Events Plaza and Victory Theatre. Check out page 6 for a special preview of all four shows, including exclusive interviews with Gaffigan and Engvall. In other news, country star - and former American Idol winner - Scotty McCreery is penciled in for February 8 at the Old National Events Plaza. He kindly fielded some questions from News 4U to help get everybody pumped up for an evening of hits and new material. long players in 2017. Find out if you agree - and if you don't, feel free to give them an earful on Facebook, etc. Speaking of earfuls, Scotty McCreery is hardly the only highlyanticipated concert on tap for next month. Get ready for the heavy crunch of Avenged Sevenfold and In This Moment, the terrifying funk of Here Come the Mummies, the community spirit of Winter Jam, the serious swing of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the undeniable swagger of Luke Bryan. To recap: January is just the calm before the entertainment storm of February. Rest up. - TE

Say, do you like to laugh? Do you enjoy a good joke now and then? Also, are you cool with living under a monarchy? All relevant questions, because the Kings of Comedy are coming to the tri-state - and they intend to rule with an iron punchline. Bad puns aside (terrible, really), prepare yourselves for a truly funny February - which actually gets going a few days early on January 28 with the most anticipated show in recent memory: Kevin Hart! Yes, the world-famous comedy "giant" is coming back to double us over with gut-busting laughter on his Irresponsible Tour. It's been three years since he sold out two nights at the Old National Events Plaza. Now the Jumanji star is making a triumphant return, booked to rock the Ford Center and kick off an incredible run of comedians performing in downtown Evansville. Following Kevin Hart is no easy task, but as a beloved veteran of the circuit, Bill Engvall has the right stuff. The hugely popular "Blue Collar" comedian has the sort of hilarious everyman humor that connects with people of all ages and backgrounds. Check out our exclusive interview with Engvall on page 12 and be sure to get your tickets for his February 17 show at the Victory (5 & 8 p.m.). The tri-state's unofficial February Funny Fest concludes with two big back-toback shows at the Old National Events Plaza on February 23 and 24. First up is Rodney Carrington, the country-singing comedian with an entertaining take on being a man - more specifically, a beerdrinkin' redneck man. Finally, the reign of the Kings of Comedy comes to its natural conclusion with a performance by the one and only Jim "Hot Pocket" Gaffigan. No one knows the ins and outs of bad food habits better. Or can address the subject in such a jovial way. In addition, the famously clean comedian (i.e., no profanity) is also a successful author and actor - and father of five kids, of which you'll likely hear much about. Check out our exclusive interview with Gaffigan on page 8.

JIM Gaffigan

"The Fixer Upper Tour"

OLD NATIONAL EVENTS PLAZA | FEBRUARY 24 | 7 & 9:30P.M.

The deadpan comedian talks Indiana, the horror of being pale, living to see his kids graduate and more

He's one of us. Yes, comedian Jim Gaffigan grew up in the Midwest, spending much of his childhood in Indiana - for better or worse. All kidding aside, he's still in touch with

Photo Credit by Robyn Von Swank

his inner Hoosier despite heading for the east coast a ways back. And his experiences here seem to have informed much of his material over the years, particularly his

obsession with food. Unhealthy food, that is. No comic before or since has gotten as much mileage out of a Hot Pocket or McDonald's as

Gaffigan. Of course, it's really all in the delivery. His deadpan approach never fails to make the mundane seem wonderfully ridiculous and entirely relatable. It's a gift.

But there's so much more to Gaffigan than just stand-up comedy. In addition to scores of TV roles and commercial work - his recent turn as

the KFC Colonel comes to mind - he's now taking on a dramatic role in Entertainment Studio’s Chappaquiddick, opposite Jason Clarke, Ed Helms, Bruce Dern and Kate Mara. All this plus five kids at home. For a guy who famously doesn't like to expend a lot of energy, it's a lot to ask. Then again, he just turns it all into comedy gold onstage.

It's fairly early in the morning. Based on your general dietary habits, oft-discussed in your stage shows, is it safe to assume that you didn't start your day with a kale smoothie? Well, what should get me going is a kale smoothie, but I had a pancake and two fried eggs - a classic combo. I'm kind of at that point of healthy eating where I'm just kind of like, if I'm up this early I'm allowed to eat whatever I want. Your appearance in season 2, episode four of Flight of the Conchords - specifically the scene where you relentlessly "question" Bret and Jemaine - has to be one of the funniest in sitcom history. Was it improvised to any degree? That show had elements of improv, so they would have a scene and then kind of build

8|

off of that, so that it felt rather organic. It was really a blast to shoot - it was kind of like, we're funny, we can make this funnier. We were all kind of on the same page in terms of what the scene was trying to accomplish. It also gave you the opportunity to play alongside Rhys Darby and his brilliant character "Murray." That character of "Murray" - I feel like that's one of the great characters of television. And that was all Rhys. That was just kind of him adding value to an already funny show. He just knew how to make it funny. It was a delight. You know, there are good gigs like that where... that and Portlandia where you're kind of improvising, and it's just a focus on the funny. They're not caught up in a timing thing, it's not about ego with those guys. It's pretty amazing.

January 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

What about The Jim Gaffigan Show that ran for two seasons on TV Land? Was there room to improvise or was it more scripted? That was pretty scripted, because it was held within a more conventional format. In Flight of the Conchords and Portlandia, they were kind of a break from reality. Whereas in the show I did with my wife it was very much the grounded characters that were based on my wife and I and making them funny and trying to tell these stories. So, it was a different kind of element. You and your wife have five kids. Three seemed reasonable but it's almost like you had the last two for comedic purposes - for new material. (Laughs) It was very much one of those things where we had this romantic notion about having tons of kids, but I was as

NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | UPCOMING EVENTS

shocked as everyone. Obviously, I was open to it and I love it. But I'm not somebody who's like... when I said I wanted tons of kids, I didn't actually mean it. It was more of a romantic notion. I mean, I love my kids - I would do anything for them. But I'm still not the guy who's like, 'Hey, there are some kids - I want to go over and play with them!' Other people's kids - I'm not that interested. I mean, I try and be polite. Well, of course - you're from the Midwest. Politeness is a thing here. I was born in Illinois, but I moved to Indiana when I was, like, eight. With that being said, I'm from northwest Indiana. And if you're from Indiana, you know there's a pretty huge distinction between it and the rest of Indiana. But that being said, I think there's more in common between northwest Indiana and regular Indiana than... you know, northwest Indiana always tries to say, 'We're more like Chicago.' The reality is, I feel like Indiana has this strange kind of Midwestern identity thing. It's kind of an afterthought for, you know, people that live around Cincinnati. I mean, Indianapolis has kind of changed that whole thing in the past 15 years. It used to be that Indiana was the state that everyone just drove through. Do you have any suggestions for people that, like yourself, are blindingly pale. You, of course, forged a union with Conan O'Brien and created the hilarious Pale Force animated series. But what about the rest of us - what can we do to combat it? My paleness was something that horrified me. I eventually got to the point where I was joking around about it on national television - that would have baffled the teenage me. But it is also one of those things where you learn that what makes someone different also makes them stronger, right? I mean, it's probably why I'm a comedian. I spent so many years as a kid where people would be like, 'Why are you so pale?' You know what I mean? There were just, like, moments where it makes you cringe. But it's strange because I have a memory of it, but I don't think I'm in touch with the feelings of how horrifying it was. But you know, Pale Force, in a strange way was, for a pale kid - an adult pale kid... it is something that resonated. With the new year upon us, will you make any dietary changes - maybe consider exercising? You know, I go through periods - like right now, I'm kind of in a dormant stage, but I definitely will exercise. It used to be where I could exercise and lose weight. Now, I'm exercising to make it so that I can fit in cars. But you know, you do feel better when you exercise, and I also wouldn't mind being at my kids' college graduations. That's the thing about kids, it's not just about you. Finally, if or when you retire, will you grow a mountain man beard like one of your comedy idols, David Letterman? Yeah, I actually have a pretty long beard for this movie I did. But I don't think I'm going to retire. I don't consider doing stand-up like a chore. It's something I enjoy.

Bill Engvall VICTORY THEATRE | FEBRUARY 17 | 5 & 8P.M.

The "Blue Collar" comedian on not being "PC," friends

outside of showbiz, the joke writing process and more

There's something so pure about stand-up comedy - just a man or woman on a stage with a microphone. You make it look so easy, but in truth it's one of the hardest things to do well. I think you're probably spot-on with that. You're right in the sense that it looks easier than it is. Here's the deal: if you go see a band play and they play a song that you don't really care for, you still hang out - there might be another song you like. But in comedy, if they don't like a joke, they don't like you; they don't like the way you think; they don't like the way you live your life. Because comedy is so personal. You know, Rodney Dangerfield even though I don't think he ever got enough credit for it - really summed it up when he said, "I don't get no respect." Comedy itself gets no respect. People just think, 'stand up there and do your thing.' Well, no, you've got to have a stage and people focused on what you're saying.

Bill Engvall really doesn't need much of an introduction. As part of the record-breaking "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" that packed arenas throughout the early-mid 2000s, the Grammynominated Texan quickly became a household name along with buddies Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White. But, as his very loyal fanbase knows, Engvall is much more than just one of the country's most beloved stand-ups. In addition to a body of television work that includes The Bill Engvall Show, Blue Collar TV, Last Man Standing and Dancing with the Stars, Engvall has also branched out into film, recently wrapping production on the upcoming thriller Monster Party. Then there's "My 2 Cents," his weekly podcast that premiered in 2016. Still, he seems most at home on the stage where his humorous take on everyday life continues to connect with people of all and backgrounds. 12ages | January 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

That's why sometimes early in people's careers... I know in mine I got asked to do office parties and all that, but people want to wander around and talk no one wants to listen to a comedian. Some comedians have stopped playing colleges due to what's perceived as the over-sensitivity of students these days. Have you noticed a "PC" vibe infiltrating the comedy world of late? Oh, yeah. I mean, I don't play colleges much at all for a number of reasons. I think overall our society has become very Ăźbersensitive to everything. I tell the audience right up front that I'm not "PC" and I don't apologize for that. I'm not a jerk, but I just think in this whole day and age of social media stuff that everybody's got this anonymity. I think maybe we've gotten to this point in our country where we're so worried about, 'oh - I might hurt their feelings.' It's a fine line you walk - because no, it's not ok to cyberbully; bullying sucks. But then again, it's a field day for bullies these days, because you've got to be

so "PC" and watch what you say. I was telling my wife the other day that it's scary where this world is headed to. Speaking of your wife, she should get the "good sport" award for being the butt of so many of your jokes over the course of your career. It takes a real special woman to be the partner of a comedian, because your life is on stage. And I'm sure there are some things put out there that she probably wishes hadn't been, but she's only ever asked me not to do one joke in 35 years of doing this. And it wasn't even the joke, it was just the voice that I did. She sounds very tolerant. Oh, yeah. But she also enjoys the perks of the business, too. You ventured into the podcast world in 2016 with "My 2 Cents." Was it a challenge to go from the stage where the reaction to your material is immediate to an invisible radio audience? Yeah, very much so. It gave me a great deal of respect for radio DJs

older now. That group that came and saw us is older now. Everybody keeps talking about it now and it wouldn't surprise me if we do one at some point, but right now I would just tell people that I wouldn't hold my breath.

because if I do a joke on stage, I know right away if the joke works. With a podcast, I can do the best podcast I can and I don't know if people are sitting there listening, going, 'This one sucks.' It's tough and the other thing is that the podcast world has become so inundated now - everybody's got a podcast. So, I don't even know how much longer I'll continue. What I may do is just do them on my website. PodcastOne has been great to me, but it's not working out the way that I thought it would. On my website, I can just do them when I want. When you're working for another company, there's a pressure to crank them out and after awhile, they're not funny anymore you're just griping about stuff. I don't want to be that guy. On your podcast session with longtime friend and fellow comedian, Jeff Foxworthy, you noted that the only thing holding back a "Blue Collar" reunion is Ron White's reluctance to come up with a set of clean material. Are you guys any closer to making the tour happen? You know, my thought on the whole reunion thing is that sometimes it's better to leave them wanting more. And my example is, have you ever gone to see a movie and it was just so great? And then you went to see the sequel, and you went, 'Well, it wasn't as good as the first one.' It was a moment in time - it was the perfect storm. We were all in the right place in our careers; the audience that we appealed to had been largely ignored by television which was mainly the Midwest. And you don't want to go back to a town where you sold 10,000 tickets and now you're selling 2,000 - and not because people don't want to see us. It's just that people have gotten

The Bill Engvall Show had a good run on TBS. Were you able to film it the way you intended or was there a lot of direction from the network? We filmed the show the way I wanted it to be filmed, but just because my name is on the show doesn't mean that I'm the boss. It's hard to relinquish [that control]. What you have to do is learn how to negotiate - how to get your point across about what you want. But we never had any real issues - the writing was good, I thought, for the most part. I mean, we probably had our stinkers, but overall I was very happy with that show. In fact, I'll tell you how good the show was - basically, the Tim Allen show [Last Man Standing] was what my show was, just with older kids. It was the same woman playing the wife, right? Same wife, three kids - and I think they did keep the same set. Are you pals with Tim Allen? It depends on what your definition of "pals" is. It's not like we run around together. But yeah, we're friends. And that's part of the problem. You know, people ask about Jeff and Larry and Ron. We all live so far apart - it's not like we can just go get a beer. But Tim and I have a very good relationship. In fact, I was sad the show got canceled, because the preacher role they had me in was starting to become a little more re-occurring. Do you have friends that aren't in the entertainment business? Sure, I have friends that aren't in the business, and I kind of enjoy hanging out with them more than those in the business, because I don't have to be "on" with them. You don't

have to be worried about anything - I know that they're my buds and that they've got my back. It's fun to hang out with them. You have to remember that in show business, none of this is real. Eventually, this is all going to come to an end. And when it does, so do those friendships usually - those showbiz friendships. Well, you're not around anymore and that's when your real friends show up. Was that the secret to staying grounded after the monumental success of the "Blue Collar" tour? I don't think there's any big secret. We all realize that we were regular people before and we'll be regular people after - so why be something different in between? And I think that that was part of the allure of that tour that we could just be your neighbors. We just happened to be funny and toured the country. I think that was one of things that I enjoyed about it - there were no real divas on the tour. I think everybody had their moments, but overall, we were just the guys that you see at the mall. The same guys that you see on stage. Every comic has a different writing process. Jerry Seinfeld even started over from scratch at one point and wrote all new material. What's your process like? That's a great question because, you know, I love Jerry but this whole thing about, 'I threw away all my old material' - I mean, come on. I try to put in new stuff every time I come back. But it's not like there's going to be 90 minutes of new stuff. Stuff takes time to word. So what I do is... like, if you and I went to go see Aerosmith, on the way over there we'd be hoping that they'd play "Toys in the Attic" and "Walk This Way." In fact, we don't want to hear their new stuff; we want them to play the hits. With comedy, it's different, because once you've heard the joke, you've heard it. What I try to do is keep a mix of new and older material, because some people still want to hear "Dorkfish" or whatever. But I like to mix in the new material not just for the audience but for me as well just so I don't get bored. But my process is just if I see it, and it's funny, I'll work on it. KEVIN HART

IRRESPONSIBLE TOUR FORD CENTER | JANUARY 28 | 7P.M.

Powerhouse comedian returning to

Evansville for much-anticipated encore performance

H

aving recently hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time and with a starring role in the box office smash Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Kevin Hart is once again in the thick of it, entertaining audiences like only he can. His inexhaustible comedic energy - which was on full display on SNL - is a joy to watch, drawing parallels at times to the late, great Robin Williams. Not surprisingly, Hart keeps very busy, considered one of the hardest working comics in the business. In addition to touring and acting, the 38-year-old Philadelphia

native is also the author of I Can't Make This Up: Life Lessons, a 2017 memoir that debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Still, Hart shines brightest on the stage where he can put the comedy pedal to the metal and unleash torrents of hilarious observations on life. And everybody is in the crosshairs - even himself. That's more than evident in the 5'4" comedian's rants about his short stature and the various related predicaments Hart often finds himself in. And it's all been catalogued over the years on groundbreaking recordings, including I'm a Grown Little Man, Seriously Funny, Laugh at My Pain and Let Me Explain - each a virtual tutorial in how to command a crowd. For the movie buffs, check out any of his classic roles in comedies

such as Ride Along, Ride Along 2, Get Hard and The Wedding Ringer. Predictably, he steals most every scene, even when paired on screen with the likes of Ice Cube and Will Ferrell - or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jack Black in the case of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Hart sold-out two shows at the Old National Events Plaza in early 2015. Three years later, he's back for more, ready to deliver an amped-up performance at the Ford Center as part of the Irresponsible Tour - which speaks for itself, really. This is guaranteed to be one of the comedy events of the year, an opportunity to see one of the best stand-ups working today. For tickets and more info, visit fordcenter.com. SCOTTY

McCREERY

OLD NATIONAL EVENTS PLAZA | FEBRUARY 8 | 7:30P.M.

The former American Idol winner talks "Five More Minutes," new album, staying true to himself and more

You simply can't mistake that deep, resonant baritone. Even at an early age, country star Scotty McCreery could go low, possessing a mature, smooth vocal style that ultimately propelled him all the way to the finals of the 10th season of American Idol where he triumphed over fellow teenaged contestant, Lauren Alaina. Since then, McCreery has released three highly successful albums - 2011's Clear as Day, 2013's See You Tonight and a Christmas collection - and scored a run of hit singles, including "I Love You this Big," "The Trouble with Girls," "See You Tonight" and "Feelin' It." If anyone doubted the North Carolina native's staying power post-reality show, they were duly proven wrong.

McCreery recently signed to a new label and is gearing up for a big 2018, buoyed by the success of "Five More Minutes," an independent single released last May. The heartfelt track dedicated to the memory of his grandfather was the first country song ever to rank in the Country Aircheck/ Mediabase Top 50 without the support of a record label. Currently out on tour, McCreery kindly took a few minutes out of his whirlwind schedule to chat with News 4U via email. The new partnership with Triple Tigers is obviously very exciting. Still, with the independent success of "Five More

Minutes," did you ever consider going that route completely? Or were you intent on signing to a label? Well, we signed with Triple Tigers soon after ["Five More Minutes"] and I love being part of that family. It’s a great team of people with a lot of resources working to promote my music. I played sports all of my life and I love being part of a team. 2013's See You Tonight saw you co-writing several songs, including the title track. Will that trend continue for the first Triple Tigers release? I co-wrote all 11 songs on my upcoming new album that will be out in the spring next year. That’s a first for me and I loved it. This album

will give you a great insight into who I am right now. People so often comment that they are "surprised" or "shocked" by your deep voice. What about you? Were you surprised by how your vocal range developed as a young man or did it just seem natural? My dad and my grandfather both had deep voices, so it’s just a McCreery thing, I guess. As a teenager, I used to help out girls that I was friends with by posing as their fathers on the phone. I’d tell guys that were bugging them, “stay away from my daughter” in my lowest voice. That was always fun – ha! We've seen several American Idol

contestants - especially winners such as Phillip Phillips - grapple with the powers-that-be post-victory over contracts, etc. Did you - or your parents - have any idea regarding the legal entanglements of the show or were you just simply swept up in the excitement of it all at the time? You know, I had a great experience with American Idol. They introduced me and my talent to the world. I was excited to be part of the show and it’s something I’m still very proud of. As a former winner of American Idol, what do you make of the show returning so soon - and would you be interested in coming back to perform or as a guest judge, etc.? I thought they’d stay away a little longer than they did, but I’m excited to see the show coming back. I’d definitely be down to come back and perform or mentor. I don’t think I’d like to be a judge, though. Go Big or Go Home is an apt title for your 2016 autobiography that details your amazing journey to this point. But did you consider How Low Can You Go? or All About That Bass? Just curious. LOL – No, but those would have been fun titles! Maybe for the sequel. Ha! Has it been difficult at times to reconcile your Christian upbringing with the wild west of the music industry? I wouldn’t say it's been difficult. I know myself and my values. I know what I’ll do and what I won’t do and I have no problem standing up for myself. It has rarely been an issue. You've been a part of the music industry now for a number of years. After all you've been through since winning American Idol, are you still "Feelin' It," so to speak? I am only beginning. I love what I do. I love to create music and then perform it for my fans. I hope to be doing this for my entire life. I have the greatest fans in the world!

HERE COME THE MUMMIES VICTORY THEATRE | FEBRUARY 8 | 7:30P.M.

Serious grooves from beyond the tomb: Catching up with the undisputed monsters of funk

Back in October, we checked in with the Mummies as they laid waste to city after city on the "Friction Tour," funk-ifying the Midwest and beyond with the unmistakable smell of decomposition (it will all make sense in just a brief moment). To recap, this 5,000-year-old group of musicians was once carefully preserved inside Egyptian tombs but now spends its days compelling even the most rhythm-challenged crowds to dance their asses off by way of some truly serious, ParliamentFunkadelic level grooves. Sure, the band stinks; however, the stench of decay is no match for their incredibly powerful live performances. Plus, once everybody starts rocking out, all the odors just blend together, anyway.

After several months on the road, the Mummies are finally headed back to Evansville, set to make a triumphant return to the Victory in early February. We caught up with members Mummy Cass and Midnight ahead of the big show for another quick Q&A. While 2017 saw no new studio recordings for HCTM, 2016 was an especially funky year with two releases - Underground and A Blessing & a Curse. What can we look forward to in 2018? Mummy Cass: We have a project planned for ’18 that our crowds are gonna help us make. That’s all we can say right now. Speaking of getting funky... is there ever a moment on stage or in the studio when you have to dial back the funk? Is it possible to over-funk or hit the funk ceiling?

20 |

Mummy Cass: If there is a funk-ceiling, we haven’t hit it yet. Midnight: There IS a soul-staircase that we have fallen down once or twice, tho. Your stage show is a wild scene, but it's also tight and choreographed to a degree in the moves department. How do you balance the two approaches? Mummy Cass: Really we’re just trying to rock out, and certain moves catch on. Midnight: The show is 100% percent organic, and free range. While you often play to hordes of loyal HCTM fans, there are times when you are faced with the uninitiated - at festivals, etc. Do you enjoy the challenge of winning over a crowd - and can you sense the moment that you do? Mummy Cass: We love watching blank stares and hostile scowls melt into joyous

abandon. We can definitely tell the exact moment for each individual we see. There is nothing like it! Midnight: Mission accomplished. Well, mission #1. You will be arriving in Evansville less than a week before Valentine's Day, at a time when love will be in the air. Considering the baby-making grooves of your music, are we likely to see an uptick in the city's census numbers roughly nine months later? Mummy Cass: There’s always love in the air when we’re around. Plus a whole lot else. Your nose knows. Midnight: One word: uptick.

O’BRIAN’S SPORTS BA

NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | WHAT'S COOKIN'

O’BRIAN’S

SPORTS BAR

& GRILL O O’Brian’s has been a fixture of Evansville’s

east side for over a decade now. With their

great drink specials, plenty of TVs airing all the big games, lots of live music, and, of course,

their numerous pool tables, they’ve garnered a

reputation as one of the best places to grab a drink

with friends. But have you tried their food? Because if you haven’t, you’re missing out.

As much as I love beer (and trust me, I do indeed love beer), I also love good bar food to go with it. And few things pair better with a few cold ones than a big, juicy burger, and the Chipotle Burger fills that role beautifully. A hefty patty with fried onion strings and - of course - chipotle sauce rest in between two thick slices of Texas toast. The chipotle sauce is just the right mix of smoky and tangy, the patty is grilled perfectly, and the onions add a nice crunch without overpowering the flavor. The fries served with it sit somewhere between steak fries and mini potato wedges, are lightly seasoned, and have a crisp consistency that underlines the freshness of the food. Seemingly every bar has nachos, but not like O’Brian’s. In keeping true to the name of the bar, they take a uniquely Irish approach to the old standby with their Irish Potato Nachos. Rather than your standard

tortilla chips, they load up a bed of thin-cut potatoes with crumbled bacon, chicken, cilantro, and chives with a drizzling of the same chipotle sauce as the burger. They’re served with one cup of salsa and one of sour cream for either dipping or spreading on top. While egg rolls might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of bar food, their Southwest Egg Roll will change that. Despite starting with a fairly standard shell, it’s filled with spinach, corn, cheese, and cilantro. I’d like to thank the server for suggesting that I dip it in the southwest ranch sauce - it complements it incredibly well. Cheese fries are another staple of sports bars. But just like with the nachos, they’re not afraid to do something different, and once again, taking a chance pays off.

WHAT'S COOKIN' Flashback: 2017

A delicious year at a glance: 12 months of tri-state food reviews and spotlights

With our annual What's Cookin' magazine nearing publication, it seems the perfect time to look back on the delicious year that was 2017. Each month, News 4U profiled an area restaurant - or two - and tried to give you a taste, so to speak, of the great food on offer around the tri-state. It was a tough job, for sure. Here's a rundown of the places we dined...

January: 2017 began with a trip to downtown Evansville to sample the new Bru Burger Bar and their incredible selection of Burgers, Sandwiches, Salads and more. We also stopped in at one of the newest Mexican restaurants in town, Nachos Grill, where we were treated to their Lopez Dip, Guarache and Shrimp Cocktail. Oh, and the Evansville Special - come in to find out more! February: Just in time for Mardi Gras, we headed over to the Stockwell Inn to reacquaint ourselves with their Cajun cuisine as well as their regular menu that features daily comfort food plate specials and much more. We also headed down to Ole South Bar-B-Q in Owensboro for their famous lunch buffet and salad bar. March: With a hankering for more local eats, we hopped on to the Lloyd, set off for First Avenue and found ourselves at the Old Tyme Deli, sampling Salisbury Steak, Lasagna, Pork Chops and BBQ Chicken. April: They say April is the cruelest month. No argument here, because the Unplugged Ale House had a fantastic menu but sadly closed down later in the year. A loss for downtown Evansville.

28 |

May: This time we headed east on the Lloyd and paid a visit to Pizza Chef in Newburgh, discovering that in addition to offering up slices of pizza heaven, they also cook up some mean House-Battered Fried Chicken and much more. June: After hanging out at Pizza Chef, we decided to just stick around Newburgh and check out Nellie's, a busy new diner featuring a made-from-scratch menu. Popeye Salad, Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, Banana Foster Waffle... they fed us well, indeed. July: Right in the heart of horse racing season, we went down south to Ellis Park in Henderson and sampled the Ellis Classic Burger, Chef Salad and Red Velvet Cake at Lucky Joe's. Sweet! Be sure to check them out when race season revs back up. August: Downtown Evansville just keeps growing and Gangnam Korean BBQ is a welcome new addition. We tried their Crazy Salmon, the Volcano (a flavor explosion), Pork Bulgoki, Beef Sizzling Bibim-Bap and Korean Fried Cake for dessert. September: Speaking of downtown Evansville, we went right back there to

January 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Walton's International Comfort Food for some amazing Brick Oven Pizza, Peppered Beef Yakisoba, Yellow Curry and Pork Torta Tripleta. October: Owensboro's got a new familyfriendly hangout, a more modern take on the traditional sports bar. In addition to a great craft and domestic beer selection, Legends Sports Bar & Grill offers unique appetizers, wings, build-your-own pizzas, burgers, hot dogs and more. November: Already a hit in Owensboro, Salsarita's opened a new location on East Morgan Avenue here in Evansville. We sampled their famous Quesorito plus freshmade burritos and nachos. So good. December: We closed out 12 months of What's Cookin' food reviews with a visit to Tropicana's new land-based casino to dine at The Deli which serves up New York style sandwiches and much more. We thoroughly enjoyed the Deluxe Ham & Cheese, The Reuben, Roast Beef and Tropicana Club. Stay tuned in 2018 for more monthly food reviews and be sure to pick up a copy of our new issue of What's Cookin' magazine coming soon to a News 4U rack near you!

NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | FILM

PIGASUS PICTURES Bloomington-based film company's community business model encouraging Hoosiers to get creative

W

hen The Good Catholic starring Danny Glover and John C. McGinley was named Best Feature Film at the 2017 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the unexpected - yet much deserved - accolade gave its Indiana-born creators a major boost in their mission to put in place a Hoosiercentric production infrastructure and develop a slate of locally-driven projects. In other words, Pigasus Pictures co-founders John Armstrong and Zach Spicer are all about community. In fact, they shot and edited their award-winning film entirely in Bloomington, recruiting talent from the area to help with the process - a truly forwardthinking business model that just seemed crazy enough to work. Indeed, it's already paying dividends with fundraising efforts going great guns and Ms. White Light, the company's second full-length feature, in the can. But it's just the beginning for this fledgling company with four films and two TV pilots on track for release by 2021. So how did this happen? Well, let's be honest - a little naivety never hurts. "In retrospect, that was our greatest asset," Armstrong explains. "Had we known [what all was involved], we never would have done it." The thirty-something IU grad comes from an acting background, as does Spicer - the two first crossed paths on campus in the mid 2000s via the theater department. However, neither really had a clue how to produce a movie when they got the bug in 2014. Both teaching in New York at the time, they tapped another IU grad, Paul Shoulberg, to come out east and direct a short film for them after their first attempt fizzled. "We didn't show anybody, because it was terrible, but then we made a second short film that was good," Armstrong says. A partnership was duly formed - and that all-important big-break soon followed in

was subsequently released in 17 markets. In the form of a Shoulberg-penned script The cast of The Good Catholic that made its way into the hands of Gayle Kellar, a well-respected casting director who loved what she read. Even better, she wanted to help get The Good Catholic on the screen. Just one problem: money. The guys quickly flew through what little they had as the casting process dragged on. But that's when a new, innovative strategy emerged. Imagine that you're making your first feature-length film and a legendary actor is on board - as long as the funding is there. Only it isn't. That's the predicament the Pigasus Pictures crew faced when Danny Glover (The Color Purple, Lethal Weapon) agreed to lend his immense talent to The Good Catholic. So, Armstrong, Shoulberg and Spicer went back to the drawing board and came up with an unexpected solution: go back to Indiana. "For marketing, we realized we could get human interest stories done for free to help spread the word and then wondered, 'how far can that notion go?,'" Armstrong explains. "We could really focus our efforts here and try to build a grassroots thing. There was enough quantifiable data from that model to be able to put into a legal document for investors. Then people started writing checks." It was still a monumental undertaking, but The Good Catholic - also starring Spicer as the conflicted "Father Daniel" and directed by Shoulberg - finally got the green light and Shoulberg - finally got the green light and

retrospect, Armstrong is even more amazed by the accomplishment. "Having talked to people in the industry, they can't believe we were able to pull it off - I now realize how lucky we got." *Attention young, creative Hoosiers: The submission process is now open for Project Pigasus, a statewide student screenwriting competition for students in grades 9-12. The winning screenplay will be fully produced by a professional film crew in the student's town and will be submitted for consideration to major film festivals nationwide, screened in select theaters and distributed online. Deadline: January 25, 2018. Visit projectpigasus.org for more info. The Good Catholic is available on DVD/BluRay, iTunes and Amazon. For more info, visit PigasusPictures.com

We Were Going to Change the World by Stacy Russo

The future is female: Oral history of women's impact on the 70's/80's southern California punk rock scene comes at a watershed moment in America

Simply, it was a call for the youth of the day to think for themselves and question authority at every turn - a message that a whole new generation took to heart and used as inspiration to form countless bands, no Author Stacy Russo

matter the level of talent or gender. Because unlike previous musical movements, punk rock was for everyone. For every imposing frontman Joey Ramone (The Ramones), Joe Strummer (The Clash), Henry Rollins (Black Flag) there was an equally intense and captivating woman at the helm. From X's Exene Cervenka to Alice Bags and the all-girl Slits led by Ari Up, the future did indeed appear to be female. This was especially true in terms of the southern California punk scene that spawned both Cervenka and Bags along with eventual Black Flag bassist Kira (Roessler). Together, along with a host of other outspoken west coast women, including Phranc and Jennifer Precious Finch, they seemingly paved the way for a major cultural shift away from a purely patriarchal society. That never quite happened; however, sometimes progress comes at a drip. And as the recent wave of sexual harassment claims continue to wash over the country and reshape the corporate structure, in particular, it's hard not to think back to that incredible period in time when a new paradigm of power was

in the cards. Author Stacy Russo, a southern California native and longtime punk rock fan, spent the last four years interviewing many of the main players and their fans, compiling a fascinating oral history of those revolutionary years. We Were Going to Change the World succeeds in giving a voice to women who helped to blaze a trail of inclusiveness and equality - even if the effects are just now truly being felt. With everything going on right now in society, the book's timing is pretty spoton. It's interesting - I kind of wonder if that's why when I've had these events [promoting the book] people seem so excited and thank me for the book. That makes me feel really good, but I think it is maybe because it's women's stories. I'm just so happy that this book of women's stories is getting some exposure. It's fabulous. In fact, Exene Cervenka talks about being sexually harassed daily at her early jobs as a waitress, etc. - and that she "couldn't really say anything about it." That sounds eerily

Phranc familiar. I had a job when I was 18 and I cannot tell you how awful men were to me. Oh my god, it was at a printing company, and I was the only woman working there as a receptionist. I just can't believe what they put me through every day. I lasted eight months and then left. It didn't really happen too much to me in the punk rock scene. I think the punk rock guys were really pretty much like feminists. Speaking of the punk rock guys, it's interesting that you drafted Mike Watt [Minutemen, Firehose] to pen the intro to a book about women. The publisher asked Mike to do it and after I read it, I thought, 'This is great, this is perfect - I love it.' It's very different from what you would normally read about with a musician. He's basically saying that it's these women like Alice Bag, in particular - who influenced him as a male musician and that made him think that he could do this. How did you go about reaching out to the women that are in the book? I made a flyer - like something you would do in 1985 (laughs). It pretty much advertised the project and who I was looking to interview and I put it around a few places in LA and Orange County and then I put it on Facebook in different groups - groups that were related somehow to punk rock. I remember that it was pretty much the first or second day after I started posting it in social media that I saw that it had been shared hundreds of times in just this one post and this one group. I had to actually not interview everyone who contacted me - at a certain point I had to stop or I would never have finished the project. Did you interview all of the women face to face?

Kira I would say that probably all Alice Bag but maybe five or six of the women, I met them in their home. Most of them still live in southern California. I quickly realized the emotional impact of it for me and some of the women. I just think that people don't really listen to each other in a deep way you know, we're always just rushing around. This was definitely someone who was interested and absolutely listening with my full attention. We have lost so much of that sort of connection. I loved all the women almost immediately after I started talking to them. And then I felt that their stories were so important after they shared them with me that even if I couldn't find a publisher, I was going to self-publish the book because I didn't want to have all these stories and they would just be in my house (laughs). Were you nervous to meet anyone in particular? You know, the first person I interviewed for the whole project was Kira. So, Black Flag was, and is, one of my favorite bands. Growing up, I was a huge Black Flag fan. And Kira was a big deal because this was a girl - a girl playing with those guys in that band. And this is, like, a tough band, right? And there she is. Because it was the first interview and I was just starting out, I was nervous to meet her. But she could sense right away that I was a little nervous and she even said, 'Are you going to be shy with me?' and that actually helped me. I just kind of laughed and then I was fine. Of course, you didn't just interview musicians, you talked to a lot of fans that were there when it all happened. I was concerned that so many of the women in the book are fans - women whose sole contribution is that they went to shows, were members of the audience - and that would

Exene Cervenka be seen as a weakness of the book by others. But for me that was the strength of it. I feel like so many times when people do historical projects, they only focus on the famous people and you really lose the whole movement if you only focus on those people. So the fact that a lot of people have told me that's what they love about it just makes me even more happy about it. Have you heard from any of the women profiled? Now that the book is out and we've had some events, I've heard from some of the women. I can also see how much of an impact it's been for them, that it does mean so much to them. It probably means the most to the women - and I don't want to generalize - whose stories are nowhere else, only in this book. Thankfully, some of the women who have been interviewed a lot have shared with me that the interview is true - it's exactly their story. Whereas a lot of times what appears [in print] is not what they really said. The title of the book comes from a quote in Exene's profile. Unfortunately, it's not We Changed the World. It's not We Changed the World because I really do feel that although punk rock has influenced much in terms of culture, I really feel that politically, the world wouldn't be how it is right now - like in the United States, for sure - if the world was changed. Everything's so mean - that's not punk rock.

I was so excited to see these prints start to make an appearance because they add a certain sophistication to an outfit you never thought possible. Throw

In 2017 I became a music festival and tailgating freak! With that being said the best accessory to have at either of these events is a fanny pack. I used to make fun of my mom in old pictures for using a fanny pack, until I realized they are coming back and are very efficient. This trend has definitely become my favorite because it is a two-for-one deal. I have a vintage fanny pack in plaid that was a total hit at Bonnaroo. If you want to make this staple a little more personal, add some buttons or brooches to your pack.

Athleisure This is a shortened phrase for “AthleticLeisure” that has become a huge fashion staple in the last few years. The modern take on this trend is to focus on the vintage. If you look in trendy stores such as Urban Outfitters or Forever 21, you will see old companies rising to power with their 90’s-esque logos, prints, and cuts. Search through your dad’s old skiing gear and rock the brightly colored jacket with a pair of leggings and Adidas Superstars for a killer take on athleisure.

Congratulations Memorial High School & Southridge High School State Football Champs! Tigers and Raiders bring home the big trophies! Due to the printing schedule of the magazine, we were unable to report earlier on the big local sports story that developed at the end of November as the Memorial Tigers and Southridge Raiders battled their way to dual state football championships - Class 3A and 2A, respectively - in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. So we'd like to take this opportunity to say a belated CONGRATULATIONS! to both teams for their incredible accomplishments. The Tigers' 29-17 victory over Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit marked the school's first IHSAA football championship since the playoff format began in 1973 - and it was a hard-fought game, indeed. But in the end, Memorial was just too much, with standout quarterback Michael Lindauer connecting under pressure, throwing darts to wide receiver Branson Combs while senior running back Kenyon Ervin broke tackles at every turn. The Raider's victory was even more hard-fought - a real nail-biter, in fact. It all came down to an all-or-nothing two-point conversion attempt in the final minute of the game. That's when quarterback Jayce Harter rolled to his right and hit wide-receiver Tucker Schank to secure a 15-14 win over Woodlan. Wow - what a finish! Once again, congratulations to both teams for a great season and for bringing the state football championships home to the tri-state!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT The Wildermans & Millie

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE FRIENDS VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

CECE: CeCe is one of the VHS’ longest residents! She can be shy and scared in the shelter setting, so she spent quite awhile in foster care with a VHS staff member. Her foster mom said she blossomed in the home, really coming out of her shell. And she coexisted peacefully with several other cats! She’s about 5 years old. Her adoption fee is $30 and includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more. Contact Vanderburgh Humane at 812-426-2563 for adoption details or to set up a visit!

MICKY: Micky is a male mixed-breed, probably a hound of some sort. He’s about 6 years old. While this isn’t “old” by any stretch of the imagination, it means that he often gets overlooked for younger dogs. His owner passed away, leaving him homeless. On Cardio for Canines walks, he is a perfectly pleasant companion. He loves all people, does not chase ducks, walks well on a leash after some initial excitement, and likes to play with other dogs. Micky’s already neutered and ready to go home today! His $100 adoption fee also includes his registered microchip, vaccinations, heartworm test, and more!

Megan Wilderman always wanted a dog but was never allowed to have one growing up. Fast forward to last June: she and her husband had just bought their first home on the north side of Evansville and adopting a pet was right near the top of their to-do list - just below getting settled in. Shortly after moving, they helped out at Cardio for Canines, the VHS's Saturday morning walking program for the shelter dogs. "That got me even more excited about adopting," Megan says. "Then a friend of mine who volunteers there said, 'I think I have a good dog in mind for you' and went and got her. With Millie, it was absolutely love at first sight." Yes, the impossibly cute Terrier mix (Blue Heeler Cattle Dog, too) was exactly what she had in mind. Just one problem: the Wildermans were still busy moving in, unable to bring Millie home. Not surprisingly, this 4-legged sweetheart was pre-adopted in the interim - a situation that left Megan devastated. "I was crying my eyes out, because I felt like she was my dog," she says. But ultimately, the adoption fell through and the Wildermans got a second chance with Millie. They quickly signed all the paperwork and sealed the deal. Reportedly, there was a little bit of an adjustment period, but Millie is doing great now and loving her new forever home. Another successful adoption!

RALPHY: Ralphy is a 5-year-old male potbellied pig! He’s a very large dude, weighing in at 113 lbs. But he walks well on a leash and will follow you everywhere if you leave a trail of Honey Nut Cheerios! He has also done a little bit of work learning to walk up & down a ramp into a vehicle for easy travel. Ralphy is neutered & has already had his piggie vaccines. Neutered potbellied pigs will do just fine as indoor pets, but he’s so large he would do fine with some outside time mixed in too in nice weather. His adoption fee is only $100 and he can now be adopted in or out of Evansville city limits. Contact Vanderburgh Humane at 812-426-2563 for adoption details!

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

can we Q: How stay on a new

with Jonathan Gluff

path in 2018?

The new year always brings those promises we make to ourselves and others that we will somehow improve our lives and our living over the course of the next 365 days. “Resolutions” we call them. These are the grand, but illusive, dreams we have - that we will be better 8,765.82 hours from now than we are today. And, as we all know, the resolutions soon go away. We revert to the comfortable practices we would disown and embrace the ways we would abandon. So, how do you stay on a new path? The evidence is clear: never walk alone. Study after study has proven the truth that there is strength in community. When we join with others in the same effort, our chance of success is greatly increased. I know of a woman who decided it was time for her to run. Frankly, most people in her age and in her condition wouldn’t dream of it. But she did. She started walking, then added a little running, and before long she was running her first 5K. But she didn’t run alone. She got a friend to run with her. The friend was company, understanding, and community. It became a shared experience. And she succeeded. You can become whatever you want to be. Find someone who shares your dream and believes in you and you will succeed! First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

Net Neutrality (Or _Ajit Pai and the FCC Need to Regulate_) The fervor around net neutrality has increased exponentially in the last few months. Numerous websites joined in the protest against repealing the 2015 regulations, and nearly every Reddit forum (known as “subreddits”) had at least one official post expressing how important they felt it was as well. For a while, it seemed the internet for once was nearly unanimous on a subject. But over the last month or so I’ve seen a small but vocal minority grow in support of repealing those neutrality regulations. “The internet functioned just fine before 2015,” they say. “Increased governmental regulation never helps!” Unfortunately, I’ve found that many of these opinions are uninformed (or misinformed) at best, and downright hypocritical at worst. Why be worried about Big Government but not Big ISP? There are undoubtedly cases where increased government oversight has hurt industries. However, there are also instances where it has helped, such as regulations to protect factory workers spurred on by Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. But if we don’t like the way the government is ran, we have the chance to vote in people who can change it; we don’t have that option with an internet service provider. “You can vote with your dollar!” Yes, when there’s competition;

January 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

unfortunately, many people - especially rural communities - don’t have another choice for their ISP. Only being able to vote for one company isn’t a vote at all. Many of those in support of deregulation of ISP's are also against increased government spending; again, I understand their stance on the latter. So imagine my confusion as to why they support these companies when AT&T, Verizon (for whom FCC chairman Ajit Pai - the man largely responsible for the repeal of these regulations - formerly served as Associate General Counsel), and Century Link accepted $400 billion in tax money for a fiber optic network they never built. Sure, one could say the government is partially at fault for awarding a contract they never enforced, but to ignore the blame these providers bear is doublethink at its finest. There are many more points I could talk about, but I’ll sum it up with this: Is a tiered internet where we are charged extra by our ISP for specific services guaranteed to come into existence without net neutrality? No, but it’s a distinct possibility. Given many of these companies’ annually abysmal customer satisfaction ratings, I’d rather them not have the chance.

MAYBE I'M JUST GETTING OLD... with Johnny Fletcher

Kickstart Your Year... with Motley Crüe Like it or not, 2018 is here, people. Time once again to swear that you'll make some big life changes in the new year. Then a few months from now, after you've accomplished exactly none of your goals, you'll be forced to admit that you had zero intention of ever doing so. At which point you'll promptly go into a shame spiral and assume the fetal position. You know the drill. Still, it doesn't have to be like that. I mean, of course it does, but may I suggest that you soften the blow with some loud, patently ridiculous yet oddly inspiring - music courtesy of the greatest of all hair bands, Motley Crüe (never forget that allimportant umlaut, btw). See, I was driving around town the other day, fighting the holiday traffic on Green River Road and thinking about everything I failed to do in 2017. The list is simply too long for this column, but regardless, I was slipping into a funk. Then, just as I felt a little tear begin to well up in the corner of my tired eye, a familiar sound blasted out of the car speakers - a blast from hair metal's past. Yes, it was "Kickstart My Heart,"

the quintessential anthem from that late 80s heyday of guitars, glamour and groupies. Remarkably, as the opening heavy staccato riff from ghostly guitarist Mick Mars revved up, I suddenly felt my malaise begin to lift. Next, infamous-for-so-manyreasons drummer Tommy Lee barreled his way into the mix with quite possibly the most massive bass/snare combo recorded in that era. Nine-lives bassist Nikki Sixx then joined in to complete the impossibly tough rhythm section, leading the way for the unmistakable - and at times unintelligible - vocal delivery of Vince "vehicular manslaughter" Neil:

Second, for many years, I was convinced that Neil was screaming, "My god, my god!" rather than "My heart, my heart!" The letters g and h have distinctly different sounds, right? Anyhow, it's the chorus where things really kick(start) into high gear: Oh, are you ready girls? Oh, are you ready now? Ooh, yeah Kick start my heart Hope it never stops Ooh, yeah, baby

It just goes to show that even the bad boys of metal had manners back in the day. Who else would kindly inquire as to whether their When I get high I get high on lady friends were up for some action? Plus, there are speed enough "oohs" and "yeahs" Top fuel funny car's a drug to get a stadium full of sports for me fans fired up. Sadly, I don't My heart, my heart have room to include the Kick start my heart second verse which makes reference to skydiving naked. A couple interesting notes here. First, Sixx, who wrote So, New Year's resolutions most of the band's songs, got you down? Need to was pronounced dead on kickstart your year? Trust December 23, 1987 - two me, you won't be in the years before "Kickstart dumps for much longer after My Heart" - after a heroin listening to this Motley Crüe overdose. He later woke classic. up; still alive, apparently.

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

Donnelly vulnerable... but not out Next year's Indiana Senate race is the GOP's to lose. Besides North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp, Joe Donnelly is considered the most vulnerable Democratic senator in 2018. In a state where Trump got 56% of the vote, the GOP should feel good about their chances. But not so fast. The GOP's top three candidates are Todd Rokita, Luke Messer, and Mike Braun. Rokita and Messer are both congressman and part of the establishment. Braun is a Jasper resident and state representative. He is also a small business owner. The establishment guys both have issues their campaigns can't shake. Rokita reportedly yelled at his staff and docked pay over petty issues; Messer doesn't even live in the state anymore. Braun, however, was seen as a breath of fresh air - an anti-establishment, Trumplike figure. But now the Indianapolis Star is reporting that he actually voted Democrat in the primaries as far back as 1996 and continued until 2008. Really? And this guy wants to win the GOP nomination? Donnelly must be licking his chops... again. Whoever wins the primary, his campaign will have enough dirt to push him over the finish line. Remember, when Donnelly was first elected in 2012, he won after his opponent, Darmstadt resident Richard Murdock, made a gaffe in the final debate. Now, it looks like the GOP is throwing him another bone as the election process is just beginning. PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE

"THE MAP" A Short Story By John Thurgood

Netflix's The Crown season 2 does not disappoint Season 2 of Netflix’s hit show The Crown was released just last month and for those of you unfamiliar with this incredible drama, it is a MUST watch. The Crown depicts the life of Queen Elizabeth in the 1950s as she ascends to the throne following her uncle’s abdication and her father’s untimely death. The show is different from other period type pieces and shows that depict real life events. There is something purely magical about the way Claire Foy - who won a Golden Globe last year for her performance as Queen Elizabeth and was recently announced as a nominee again this year - and Matt Smith act on screen together as the queen and prince, respectively. Their chemistry is inexplicable, but it is also incredibly gratifying watching their love story unfold, all while knowing that the real Queen and Prince are alive and well at ages 91 and 96, respectively. One of the most interesting facets of the show is watching how Queen Elizabeth must navigate her new role as Queen of the United Kingdom, while also having a limited, if non-existent role in the government, thanks to her ruling in a constitutional monarchy. I know that there are always embellishments or sometimes halftruths presented when watching a fictional show based off of reality, but I truly believe that this is a well-researched show that gives us all an inside, exclusive look into what it is like to not only be a royal and rule, but to be a woman and rule. The second season takes a deeper look into the marriage of Elizabeth and Philip and how they handle his five month tour abroad and what he does during the tour. The show also examines the public’s perception of the monarch and how the Queen changes, uncomfortable and unhappily so, but also dutifully so, over time in order to change with the modernizing world. But all in all, this show gives us a look as to what it was like for a 25 year old girl to take center stage of the world and learn to rule when she takes over a crown she was never meant to have. For those who have watched the first season, the second does not disappoint. And for those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, log onto your Netflix account, grab a bag of chips and some candy, settle down into your couch and enjoy a wonderful weekend of binging a royally incredible show. - Marisa Patwa

Their version of tag seemed lawless. They weaved through playground equipment touching everything like a swarm of pure energy buzzing at a clipped pitch, regardless of who or what may or may not be it. Kat waited patiently. Her memory of being a four-year-old was cluttered with images of cartoon characters and boxed mac'n'cheese. If she had ever played tag, it was not like this. Her daughter, Gwen, tumbled to the ground and spilled out of her jacket. Kat rushed across the quiet turf of recycled tire. Her daughter felt like dead weight limp in her grip as she rolled her over onto her back. Gwen flipped with a smile and giggled. “Don't do that,” Kat said, feeling a little guilty. Then Kat grabbed Gwen's jacket, and a small piece of paper fell out. She showed it to Gwen, and her daughter beamed with delight. “It's a map, Mommy.” At home, Kat found the map again in her pocket. She studied it at the kitchen counter. There were dots and a few squares. If the squares were buildings, the dots must have been people - or landmarks. It was hard to tell. When her husband walked into the kitchen, she stuffed the napkin-sized map into her pocket, and didn't look at it again until the next day, when she rediscovered it while waiting in line at the bank. She studied the map again. The dots and squares had changed, it seemed. The dots were tighter together. A teller called her forward, and she stuffed the map back in her pocket. The rest of her day unfolded naturally. She picked up her daughter from school. They went to the park, and Gwen played with her friends at the playground. As Kat waited, she couldn't help herself. Everyone at the park looked unfamiliar. If they weren't a parent, they were suspicious. She caught herself reaching for her phone a few times and had to remind herself that they were in a public park. The map could have come from anywhere. At home that night, Kat pulled the map out again. The dots were nearly on top of one another. Gwen was playing in her room. Kat brought the map to her and asked where she had found it. A boy had given it to her. A boy without a name. Than Kat explained how the dots seemed to be getting closer. “What does it mean?” Kat asked. “They're here.”

TEMPLE (TV-MA) SCREEN MEDIA FILMS There is no point in ignoring the fact that Temple falls apart at the end. The threads that run at its core don't sing. They don't weave together. They don't even seem to stretch all the way to the credits. The unfortunate part about all this is that the beginning of Temple builds with such solid momentum that to have it crumble ninety percent of the way through proves just how difficult it must be to shock an audience who has been raised on a steady diet of who-done-its and baitand-switches. If Temple had preceded films like The Usual Suspects, Fight Club or even a single episode of The X Files, one might think its writer Simon Barrett and director Michael Barrett were really on to something, but since this thriller falls on the sorry end of the long arc of filmmaking, it is hard not to think of that old adage: It is both good and original; but the good parts are not original, and the original parts are not good. With that said, Temple has moments that dazzle and hook. The work spent location scouting for this film definitely pays off. From tight alleys in Tokyo to breath-taking vistas of mountain side villages complete with ancient shrines, abandoned mines and, of course, a historic temple, if the storyline of this film doesn't grab the viewer, the scenery certainly will. - John Thurgood

www.showplacecinemas.com Imagine a precocious teenager who has recently sat down to watch Zombieland and Home Alone back-to-back. He loves these movies (and of course he is a boy). He's fascinated by their loose connection with reality; they're not quite fantasy, and yet far from real. He studies their playfulness at breaking down the fourth wall, their inventive use of motion graphics and frame speeds. He googles “Rube Goldberg machine” at least three times. Then after a healthy breakfast, he sits down to type out his first screenplay, an opus. Maybe he is thirteen. The result is, or would most likely resemble, The Babysitter. In the amount of time it takes to setup a loving relationship between a twelve-year-old kid and his young adult babysitter, this film also manages to push every opportunity for gratuitous violence and obscene gore to the edge, then proceeds to shove it clean off. The young actor who plays the hero of this romp, Judah Lewis, fills the screen with befuddled close-ups as if it were his calling to do so. At times it seems all he can do amidst his fellow cast members, who must have been scouted from Calvin Klein ads. The men and women in this film are painfully attractive, just one more addition to the whimsy of this film. However, for all its lack of development and heedless momentum, the writing is surprisingly funny, and even though the appeal of a spectacle is its flash in the pan, The Babysitter burns brighter than most. - John Thurgood

MORRISSEY Low in High School BMG He may garner more press for cancelling tour dates these days than for his studio efforts, but Morrissey can still cobble together a fine album on occasion - even without primary songwriter/guitarist Alain Whyte, who exited the former Smiths frontman's backing band for good after 2009's fantastic Years of Refusal. The subsequent World Peace is None of Your Business, released five years later, had its moments but ultimately failed to excite. Now Moz is back and sounding fairly rejuvenated with Low in High School - and with it, he may have found a new stellar writing partner in bassist Mando Lopez, whose musical contributions helped to form the basis for the album's two best songs, "My Love, I'd Do Anything for You" and "Home is a Question Mark." The former recalls the glam stomp of 1994's Your Arsenal while the latter hints at the lost beauty of The Smiths as well as 1995's Smiths-esque Vauxhall & I. Other highlights include the self-explanatory "I Wish You Lonely," the suspected Brexit rant "Jacky's Only Happy When She's Up on the Stage" and the sprawling, piano-driven drama of closing track, "Israel." Through it all, Morrissey's famously emotive vocals hold court, delivering his legendary wordplay as sharply as ever. - Johnny Fletcher

THE CHURCH Man Woman Life Death Infinity Unorthodox Recordings Three years after the heralded release of Further/Deeper - the first Church album produced without longtime guitarist Marty Wilson Piper - the revered Australian alternative/psychedelic band returns with an even better follow-up. Piper's replacement, former Powderfinger guitarist Ian Haug, sounds even more at home on this tight 10-song collection that veers from the "Under the Milky Way" blueprint in all directions. That sole U.S. "hit" still lingers three decades later, both in the minds of listeners and in the music created by the four members - singer/bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarist Peter Koppes, drummer Tim Powles and newbie Haug. Indeed, its influence is noticeable throughout, especially on "I Don't Know How I Don't Know Why," a Byrds-ian track that mixes acoustic and Rickenbacker guitars to great effect. But the major triumphs here are when Kilbey's genius for unexpected vocal melodies and stream of consciousness lyrics matches up with the band's penchant for dark, reverb-drenched instrumental work. In fact, nearly 40 years after forming, The Church are at the top of their game. Dream-like opening track "Another Century" is flat-out brilliant; "For King Knife" is a strangely sweet, psychedelic lullaby; "In Your Fog" is addictively menacing. And on. Everything works beautifully - and infinitely. - Johnny Fletcher

Walk the Moon What if Nothing RCA Walk the Moon’s latest release shares few similarities with “Shut Up and Dance," and arguably, the further the Cincinnati-based alt rock group strays from the top 40 formula, the better they sound. Sincerity has been at the heart of the band since its inception, and they carry this tradition on in many of the tracks on What if Nothing. Most notably, “Tiger Teeth” is a brutally honest depiction of the cutting of ties after the end of a relationship, and gives a nod to long-lasting fans: The song was on Walk the Moon’s setlist as early as 2013, but had never been recorded until now. However, What if Nothing falls short in “Kamikaze” and “Feels Good to be High." With lyrics that are somehow both facetious and meaningless, “Kamikaze” does the album no favors, and the theme of “Feels Good to be High” does not seem to fit with the rest of the record. That being said, the rest of What if Nothing deserves a listen, especially “Tiger Teeth," “Sound of Awakening," and “Lost in the Wild." - Alice Daum, WUEV Student Station Mgr.

Maroon 5 Red Pill Blues 222 and Interscope After years of Adam Levine wasting his talent writing half-assed pop songs about how darn good he is at sex ("Moves Like Jagger" and "Sugar" being the most popular culprits), we get a decidedly half-assed sixth album. Red Pill Blues isn’t necessarily bad, but none of the individual songs will stand the test of time. Thirty years from now, "Misery," "She Will Be Loved" and "This Love" will continue to trounce "What Lovers Do" or the embarrassingly-titled "Best 4 U." I don’t expect perfection from anybody, but given Adam Levine’s talents as a performer and writer, this is a C- effort at most. Even the name of the album demonstrates a lack of foresight. According to the band, Red Pill Blues is supposed to be a reference to The Matrix. Unfortunately for them, this exact reference has been co-opted by “men’s rights” activists for years. At best it’s a sign they don’t pay much attention to online politics; at worst their album title reads as if it’s a bunch of dudes complaining about feminism. It’s like they named the album five minutes before deadline and it stuck. - Gavin Gaddis

NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | MUSIC REVIEWS

Barenaked Ladies Fake Nudes Vanguard At the risk of perpetuating a stereotype about Canadians, Barenaked Ladies have delivered a decidedly polite, friendly album with Fake Nudes. From the twangy campfire guitar feel of "Canada Dry" to the catchy bridge of "Looking Up," the band kept me entertained (even occasionally getting me to sing along) and coming back for more. It’s hard to explain exactly what makes Fake Nudes as fun as I’ve found it over the past few weeks of re-listens. Much like the best They Might Be Giants albums, Fake Nudes takes some basic instruments and uses unobtrusive music to perfectly complement importantly witty lyrics. This is a Barenaked Ladies album. Nothing more, nothing less. In an age where talented musicians crank out music for their fanbase, it’s rare to find a band that can evolve and produce music without ever losing that spark that defines them. There might not be any singles on Fake Nudes that will shoot up the charts like "One Week" did back on Stunt, but one could play a song from this album right after "One Week" and be able to clearly tell they’re still listening to the same band. This album is well worth a listen, if not repeat visits. - Gavin Gaddis

Jaden Smith Syre MSFTSMusics/Roc Nation I’ve never been so conflicted about an album as I am with Syre. I came into it pumped for Jaden Smith to unleash his creativity. He’s infamous online for posting stoner-level philosophical comments on Twitter; a rap album from this guy must be bananas, right? Unfortunately for Syre and anything musical Jaden Smith might ever do: The shadow of his little sister’s cringe-inducing "Whip My Hair" - a song that hit the charts purely because Will Smith has more money than God - looms large. A first album is usually where an artist cuts their teeth and presents their voice to the existing music world. Rarely are they perfect, which further raises my suspicions when looking at just how professional the album sounds. Is Syre a well-mixed album because the artist spent tons of time on it, or because he wrote a check (to his own label no less) to get someone to do the hard work for him? Songs like "Passion" feel like Jaden Smith originals if only because they’re almost painful to listen to at points. Check out "Passion" and "Icon" for your own morbid curiosity. Honestly, I can’t really find a reason to tell a normal person to purchase this album. - Gavin Gaddis

THROWBACKS: A fresh look at old albums DEAD MOON In the Graveyard (1988) Tombstone Records In light of Fred Cole's recent passing, it goes without saying that he was an indelible force. The music he produced was necessary and urgent, and the bands he influenced and helped distribute are innumerable. He was a garage punk legend who, in the 80s, turned his back on most iterations of what people were calling punk for reasons that still resonate today. He moved away from the machismo of hardcore and the glam of punk to focus more on content and simplicity. After his band from the early 80s disbanded, he took a musical tour through the soundscape of country music, before landing back at his roots with the lo-fi, rock'n'roll samplings of his garage punk band Dead Moon. Their first full-length, In the Graveyard, established the band's legacy and set a tone for a type of record distribution that moved by word-of-mouth, the type of holy grail discovery that was hard to come by before the advent of the internet and the age of personal PR. It showcases the foundation of a genre: aggression, listlessness and horror. But it also leans heavily on Cole's previous influences: blues and country. The title track mixes both with ease, hysterical declarations of social suicide and nihilism. - John Thurgood

ANDRE WILLIAMS Aphrodisiac (2006) Vampi Soul Aphrodisiac marks a triumphant moment in Andre Williams' long and troubled career. He began recording in the 50s, singing doo wop for the now infamous Fortune Records. He had a few albums with a handful of hits, before bouncing around the industry, writing songs and producing, until finally falling out of touch for two decades during the 70s and 80s. With the 90s came a rebirth of that Detroit sound, spearheaded by bands like The Gories, but supported by record labels like In the Red and Goner. In this melee, Andre Williams made a triumphant return. Those first few albums - Mr. Rhythm is Back, Mr. Rhythm, Greasy and Silky - are some of the dirtiest and rawest records to come out of that era of music. It wasn't until over a decade later that Williams began to balance those emotions with his talent, and start to funnel both into an elemental craft. The ultimate result being his 2006 release, Aphrodisiac. This collection of recordings shows Williams as an auteur heavily influenced by the culture that produced him, the disenfranchised circumstances of his youth, growing up as a black orphan in Detroit, but it pushes against that familiar trope of overcoming adversity by showing us instead of telling us, making him a man, not simply a caricature of himself. - John Thurgood Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • January 2018

Golden Road Hazelnut Hills

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

This brown ale pours up a transparent medium brown color with a half inch, quicklyfading head and essentially no lacing. Its aroma is pleasant with roasty malts, caramel and hops. The taste follows suit with a somewhat complex offering of those lightly roasted malts, hops and nuances of caramel, chocolate and a certain nuttiness. This, as often is the case with this genre of brew, is more enjoyable and flavorful if not served too cold. If a brown ale suits your style I feel certain that you will not be disappointed. An off white head forms on the ale, but it disappears rapidly. The nose boasts a combination of malt and spices. The first sip of the beer contains malt flavors, followed by a little hop bitterness, with spices coming in the long finish. In spite of the rich flavor, the moderate alcohol level allows the drinker to consume a couple in one sitting. Try this limited release while it’s available. It might be hard to find in January.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5

It looks like you're drinking a coke when you pour this. I almost consider this one a heavy summer lager. It reminds me of the commercial “I can’t taste my beer." I can taste the light caramel flavors but actually I'm disappointed with this beer. I'm a Goose Island fan but this one is weak on flavor. Winter ale should be robust and full of flavor but this one is winter ale “light."

74 |

Golden Road returns yet again this month. It pours a fairly clear cola color with a temporary one finger head and minimal lacing. On the nose it’s not especially remarkable with lightly roasted malts and hazelnut. The flavor follows its aroma with a “watered down” taste that doesn't really deliver. Let me be clear that there’s nothing wrong or bad tasting about Hazelnut Hills. Its aroma, taste and mouthfeel are not remarkable, though, and I’m honestly wondering if this ale is artificially hazelnut flavored. You decide. Give it a try.

A tan head tops this brown ale after pouring it into a traditional beer mug, but it evaporates somewhat quickly. A generous amount of hazelnut first fills the nose. The first sip of the beer promotes a more balanced approach between the hazelnut flavor and elements of roasted malt. This beer might work well at the end of a meal as part of a dessert course. Pair it with grilled meats or cheese.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

The is a deep, dark beer; I can smell the hazelnut right away. A friend of mine thought it tasted a little like coconut at first, but once I said hazelnut, he agreed with the flavor. I enjoy the rich hazelnut flavor and it's actually easy to drink. I'm not sure if I can classify this one as a session beer but it's pretty tasty this time of the year. After one or two it would be what I would classify as a dessert beer.

Sun King When the Lights Go Out

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4

This one is a coffee porter brewed by Sun King of Indianapolis with locally roasted coffee. There’s a lot of coffee sharing the spotlight with roasted malts on the nose. It pours up pretty with a dark brown color and a thick beige quickto-fade head. There's definitely some lacing there. The taste is big headed up with dark coffee, roasted malts, chocolate and caramel and hops. The balance is nice as it’s well balanced and not too sweet. The mouthfeel is nice and not too heavy to enjoy more than one in a session. I’m pretty impressed and recommend that you give it a go.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

A thick tan head crowns this Sun King beer when poured into an English pub glass and stays for a long time. The first scents hitting the nose contain roasted malt, with coffee coming through quickly after that. With the first tasting, the coffee comes first, followed by the malt, with the coffee returning in the long finish. Try this beer for breakfast or add a scoop of vanilla or coffee ice cream for a float.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5

I could smell the coffee right away and had high hopes for this beer. It has your standard dark color of most porters and the coffee taste is there straight away. The problem is that it has a bad coffee flavor. Most beers like this have a very rich and smooth flavor. The more I drank, the harder it was for me to finish it. Cool looking can but that's the best thing going for it.

NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | BEER REVIEWS

Bell's Expedition Stout

head that laces all the way to the finish line. Its nose is dark chocolate, dark roasted malts, and booziness. The taste is very unbridled with everything from the aroma plus dark coffee and almost burnt malts and even more booziness. If you're into this genre, my bet is you're going to love this one. It has a 10.5% ABV so slowly sipping it in your easy chair in front of the fireplace would be a great plan.

DANIEL KNIGHT - 4.5

Russian imperial stouts are unapologetically strong. Everything about them is big. They are a sipping drink for me. This one pours up black as paint with a short dense brown

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thin tan head rests on this stout after pouring it into an English pub glass. Sweet roasted malt scents dominate the nose. More sweet malt hits the tongue with the initial tasting, with roasted flavors appearing in the long finish. This high

alcohol stout will be an excellent choice in winter. Pair it with Stilton blue cheese or dark chocolate truffles. The beer can be cellared indefinitely and add new flavor to the beer.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

I am a big fan of Bell’s and this one did not disappoint. It has the deep black coloring and a nice chocolate head. It has the standard creamy chocolate flavor which I enjoyed. I could feel the alcohol warming effect since it has an ABV of 10.5%. This beer is not for the faint at heart but a true Imperial stout. A beer you can almost chew. I am glad they brewed something to this caliber.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

NEWS4U JANUARY 2018 | BOURBON & WINE REVIEWS

Walter the Wine Guy FROM LIQUOR LOCKER

Get your new year on track with some excellent bourbon and whiskey recommendations

H

appy New Year! Well, we survived 2017. I hope it was good to you and you are looking forward to 2018 with an opportunistic attitude! I have had a change in my professional life to start this new year; I am now the manager of the Liquor Locker Morgan Avenue store, so if you need to talk, I am in one location. One of the things that we do at Liquor Locker is sell a lot of BOURBON! That being said, I am still a wine geek, but since I am now a store manager, I am learning about the other things we sell as well as wine. I hope to incorporate what I am learning about the other things we sell into my column, and as always, I hope the information is forwarding your knowledge too! On to the show! I know I have talked about wine being finished in bourbon barrels. Cooper & Thief, Southern Belle, 1000 Stories are among the many available at differing price points. So today I want to talk about bourbon finished in wine barrels! One of the things I have noticed about these bourbons and whiskeys is that it has a way of adding flavors, and softens the aggressiveness of the spirits that are done this way. I have found that I really can taste the influence of the wine barrel in the whiskeys that I have had the pleasure of tasting. Let’s talk about a few that are available in our market. The first one I want to talk about is the

one that is in my bar. I have always enjoyed Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey. Well, one that is similar is PIKE CREEK Canadian Whiskey. It is a handcrafted whiskey that is finished in vintage port wine barrels. The whiskey is first aged in toasted oak barrels, then blended, and placed into port wine barrels in a non-temperature controlled building. The effect of the changing temperature on the barrels causes them to slightly expand in the heat and contract in the cold. This assists in bringing out the oak and subtle port wine influence on the finished product. The color imparted from the barrel gives a beautiful amber color with hints of ruby red. On the nose, you pick up a complex bouquet of sweet dried fruits, and slight peppery spice, and subtle notes of toffee. When you sip this whiskey, you find it is soft and smooth with a well- balanced

Walt is Liquor Locker's Resident Wine Guru blend of fruit, vanilla, and toffee. The finish has a slight port wine sweetness, that is warm and smooth. Drink this neat, or, if you like, throw in an ice cube and enjoy. It costs under $40 so it is an approachable price point. 40% ABV, 80 proof. The next one I want to talk about is a very popular one from across the river in Louisville, KY. A bourbon finished in port wine barrels called ANGEL’S ENVY. This is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon, done in small batches, and finished in port wine barrels for an award-winning spirit. They guide each batch’s conditioning, blending their handcrafted bourbon in small batches of 8 to 12 barrels at a time. It is then aged for up to 6 years. While they lose about 5% of the spirit each year to evaporation, called “The Angel’s Share,” what’s left behind is truly worthy of ENVY! After it is deemed ready the bourbon is finished in 60-gallon ruby port wine barrels that are made from French oak and imported from Portugal. The process of “finishing” in the port wine barrels adds subtly distinct flavor nuances that enhance the bourbon without challenging it. The port finishing process lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on the flavor imparted. That flavor is what has made this an award-winning product. On the palate you get vanilla, ripe fruit, maple syrup, a slight toast, and bitter chocolate. The finish is clean and has a lingering sweetness with a hint of

Maderia that slowly fades and warms the chest. It runs a bit over $50 and is 43% ABV or 86 proof.

The last one I want to talk about is BLOOD OATH Pact #3 2017. I had to do some research on this product. It is a blend of a 12-yearold bourbon, a 7-year-old bourbon, and a 7-year-old bourbon finished in cabernet barrels. The Cabernet Sauvignon barrels used for this are from a famous Oakville, California winery named SWANSON. I tasted this bourbon, and I have to admit, I did not taste the wine, but it does have a really nice palate. According to the producer, it is a masterful union of well-bred bourbons. Taking the lead is a far-from-shy, sharp and floral rye, finished in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels for a dry, blackberry and espresso complexity. This, coupled with a well-seasoned, rye bourbon, rich with fragrant vanilla, toasted caramel, oranges, and oak. We are grateful for this fateful affair between Kentucky and California. This costs a little over $100 and 49.3% ABV or 98.6 proof.

Well this is my first shot at bourbon and whiskey. I hope the information is helpful and useful. Until next month, have a glass of something, in moderation, of course, and I hope to see you at my new digs.
