A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
It's officially summer, tri-state. Can you hear me cheering? Probably not unless you happen to be standing outside my window - which would be kind of creepy, honestly. So just stay where you are, please, and join me in my celebration from a safe distance of at least five miles. Anyhow, currently, I'm enjoying the view of a bright blue sky and trees swaying in the warm breeze; it's distracting, really. Not that I don't treasure writing these monthly missives to you, but given the choice, I'd rather be out in the sun. Hey now, don't get your feelings hurt - it's nothing personal. Seriously, stop blubbering; go grab a Kleenex and clean yourself up a bit. I'll
wait... Are you good now? I sure hope so, as I need your undivided attention (a bit hypocritical of me as I continue to stare longingly out the window, my mind drifting...). Time to focus because there's plenty of cool stuff going on this month, including numerous high-profile concerts: Killer Queen, Collective Soul, Keith Sweat, Justin Moore, The Pop 2000 Tour, Big & Rich, Rock the Dam 7 and Jamey Johnson, just to name (more than) a few. We've got interviews with several of the aforementioned acts to get you primed and ready, by the way. And of course, the Vanderburgh County Fair, featuring a mid-week performance by a yet-to-be-named country star, is set to
return in late July. Which is to say there's every reason to stay put in the tri-state for the next 31 days - but we all know it's road trip season and many of you are surely planning an adventure or two. As it so happens, we've got the 411 on the area's best place to find the right vehicle for any and all summer getaways: Auto Now. They can help put you in a sweet ride that will maximize the experience, so check out what separates this used car business from the rest on pg. 8. Happy 4th of July! - TE
- Tommy Ellis
These are the days we dream about when we're holed up inside, shivering under the covers on a frigid winter morning. Our minds inevitably drift to the warm summer months when everything seems possible, when the thought of jumping in the car and taking off on an exciting road trip with friends and family, far away from the worries of everyday life, is what we live for. Sharing unforgettable adventures with the people we love... does it get any better? The short answer is no. But here's the thing: the safety of our loved ones is paramount. That's why choosing the right vehicle from a trusted source for your planned - or unplannedgetaway is so very important. Especially now that the long wait is over and the 2024 Summer Road Trip Season is finally here. Hot damn!
Now, before you get overwhelmed with the thought of trying to find a reliable - and affordable - used vehicle for your summer adventure(s), we'll let you in on a well-known secret: Auto Now is the tri-state's most trusted used car dealership with four convenient locations - two right here in Evansville and two in Jasper. Owner Tim Ransome started the business back in 2002; it was a one-man operation at the time, believe it or not, which just goes to show the drive (pun intended) he had to succeed; from the word "go," Ransome was hyper-focused on customer satisfaction, ensuring that every vehicle on his lot was thoroughly inspected and backed by warranty. Word of his unsurpassed dedication to quality quickly spread and the rest, as they say, is history. Here we are over 20 years later and Auto Now has grown by leaps and bounds, boasting an inventory of nearly 150 cars - yet it still retains the feel of a small business. "We're a mom and pop store, really - always been owned locally," Ransome says. "You have to take care of your people or they're not going to take care of you."
Now, about that road trip you're planning to take this summer... Heading for the mountains? Auto Now has a wide variety of sport utility vehicles, trucks and other rugged options. Going to the beach? They've got the Jeep you need. Just looking to cruise the highways? Take your pick of comfortable, fuel-efficient cars. Need lots of space for the kids? Choose from a selection of high-quality vans. Best of all, you can get financed with no problem. Ransome and his team are the tri-state leaders in that department. "We just have a knack for getting people financed where other places for some reason can't," Ransome notes. "We have a wide variety of lenders we use, credit unions, subprime lenders - we normally have a place for every applicant." Most importantly, once you've purchased your vehicle, Auto Now will stand behind you all the way - "more than anybody that I know of - much more than competitors do," Ransome adds. "In the long-term I know it's the right thing to do."
So what are you waiting for? Head over to Auto Now, well, now and find just the right vehicle for your summer road trip adventure, no matter the destination. Their friendly staff is waiting to help guide you through the process, determined to make it an anxiety-free experience and save you money, while ensuring that you'll drive off in a safe, well-maintained used car, Jeep, SUV, truck or van.

FRONTMAN PATRICK MYERS ON THE GENESIS OF "UNDER PRESSURE," THE COMPLEXITY OF "BRIGHTON ROCK," THE DUALITY OF PERFORMING IN A TRIBUTE BAND AND MORE
Celebrating the music of one of the greatest rock bands of alltime for three decades now, Killer Queen have solidified their standing as the preeminent Queen tribute act, continuing to dazzle fans across the world with a truly jaw-dropping stage show. As frontman Patrick "Freddie Mercury" Myers notes, "it's been all my life, basically - all my adult life." The level of dedication says it all; Myers has worked tirelessly to refine his performance and deliver the beloved songs of Queen with an authenticity often missing from similar presentations. From country to country, fans are absolutely swept up by the sheer joy of hearing such classics as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You/We are the Champions," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Don't Stop Me Now," "Under Pressure" and many more - all sung and played from the heart just like the original incarnation of Queen.
Myers kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory.
I recently revisited the live performance of "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Annie Lennox at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992...
She snogs him at the end - she's all over him [laughs]!
Annie is a trip. Were you in the crowd that night?
No, I wasn't. I was really too upset. I completely regretted it afterwards, you know, because it was silly not to have gone, so I kick myself.
In the early demo stage of "Under Pressurewhen it was called "Feel Like" - you can hear that the germ of the idea is there, but it's just incredible how Bowie and Freddie fleshed it out into an absolutely epic track. Yeah, I love hearing all the demos. I think [drummer] Roger [Taylor] said in an interview how he wished they'd done more together as a collaboration between them and Bowie. I think something's got to give when you have that amount of talent - dare I say ego - in the room, and [guitarist] Brian [May] very diplomatically stepped backwards; he did a very tasteful sort of contribution on his guitar with that sort of shimmering, you know, with the volume down sound, building slightly into more sort of power chords towards the end. But, you know, he let Freddie and David really take center stage there. I wish they'd done more together because "Under Pressure" is evergreen; it's timeless.
Putting "Bohemian Rhapsody" aside, what do you consider to be the most structurally complex Queen song?
That's a good question. They've all got different things going on... well, I think [1991's] "Innuendo" is pretty structurally complex in terms of what it's doing, because it's a song with different movements in it. The song I love that doesn't really get a lot of mentions because it's sort of, like, truncated into a guitar solo, is the song called "Brighton Rock" off [1974's] Sheer Heart Attack. It's like a mini operetta, like a little pocket novella, a Victorian melodrama. It's just brimming with amazing riffs all the way through it. I think it's just a stone cold classic. I love the crazy voicings that Freddie does; I love the stuff that Brian does, it's so great - and they're just on fire as a band.
"Don't Stop Me Now," a mildly successful single from 1979, has since become a massive song in America thanks to its use in numerous
high-profile advertisements over the last several years. I doubt Brian or Roger saw that coming.
Yeah, it wasn't a breakaway single - it just did ok. But now it's huge. It's such an anthem for getting ready for going out at night. It's a real, you know, put your best clothes on and let's hit the town [kind of song]. And it's, like, got the three stages of going out: you can imagine a girl in front of the mirror putting on her makeup at the beginning of the song - "Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time" - and then you're at the club having a great time. And then at the end of the evening you've got the play out where you're drinking champagne from a shoe in the bath having had a brilliant time [laughs].
I LOVE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN SCRATCH THE ITCH OF BEING A ROCK STAR - AND THAT'S A WONDERFUL ITCH TO BE ABLE TO SCRATCH, I HAVE TO SAY.
A little off-topic but still technically Queenrelated... Is it you playing opposite Ricky Gervais in the 1999 British TV episode "Golden Years" from the Comedy Lab series? Oh my god, how did you find that out? I never publicize that! Oh my god - yeah, that is me.
Well, I'm a massive fan of Ricky's - I'd love to chat with him over a couple beers sometime - and I was re-watching the episode when it occurred to me that the character doing the impressive Freddie Mercury impersonation looked quite a bit like you. That was a long time ago and a lot of fun to do. And I heartily agree with you that having a drink with Ricky would probably be a very, very, very fun experience.
It seems that you have the best of both worlds with Killer Queen - you get to be a rock star on stage yet live a normal life, otherwise. Yeah, I absolutely love that - that's one of my favorite things about the whole tribute deal. Sometimes you start thinking, oh, if I had a profile I could publicize my own songs and this and that and the other. Really, those are sort of fleeting kind of feelings - my main feeling is that
I love the duality of it. I love the fact that you can scratch the itch of being a rock star - and that's a wonderful itch to be able to scratch, I have to say. But I never actually think of myself in those terms [as a rock star] - I think of what I do as something that gives people pleasure. I do like the anonymity [off stage] - I'm completely used to it now. When people find out things about me rather than Killer Queen like you've just done, it really surprises me, because it doesn't happen - it really doesn't happen very often. I normally get asked "What's your favorite Queen song?" and "How did the band get together?" and that's about it. That's fine; I'll happily answer those questions all day long.

KEITH SWEAT "SWEAT, LOVE & LAUGH COMEDY TOUR"
He's the king of new jack swing, having scored some of the genre's earliest and biggest hits, including 1987's "I Want Her" and 1990's "Make You Sweat," both cutting-edge tracks that pointed the way towards a new sound that merged R&B with hip-hop beats. But Keith Sweat is also widely known for crafting impossibly sexy slow jams that often featured incredible talent like LL Cool J
Never one to stagnate creatively, Sweat's currently testing out a new entertainment concept dubbed the "Sweat, Love & Laugh Comedy Tour" - and he's bringing the show exclusively to Evansville this month. Comedian Tony Roberts will act as support before Sweat takes to the stage for a set of his classic songs, closing out the evening with all of your favorite R&B jams. THE R&B LEGEND ON THE DARKER SOUND OF NEW JACK SWING, PROMINENTLY FEATURING OTHER ARTISTS IN HIS SONGS, BEING AN INSPIRATION FOR ROMANCE AND MORE
("Why Me Baby?"), Athena Cage of Kut Klose ("Nobody") and Silk ("Give Me What I Want") - the latter being a singing group Sweat discovered in 1992 and ultimately produced in the studio. A self-described workaholic, he's continued to write and perform over the last three decades with few breaks, touring in support of such sweet baby-making collections as 2011's Til the Morning and 2018's Playing for Keeps.
IF I'M GOING TO USE YOU, I'M GOING TO USE YOU. I'M NOT GOING TO USE YOU FOR JUST EIGHT BARS - THAT'S NOT A GOOD ADMIRATION OF THE ARTIST.
with you on the bass sound. But I don't think the chords were no different from The Stylistics and The Dramatics from back in the day - Earth, Wind & Fire and groups like that. I don't think the chords were darker - it was more sort of bass.
Fair enough. But while the bass lines were darker, the fashions were brightwhite outfits were often featured in the videos back in the day.
just happen organically?
Sweat kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory.
When new jack swing emerged in the late 80's, was there something happening culturally that birthed it - or was it just a natural merging of sounds?
It was just when R&B was merging with rap, so it was a combination of the two - with the rap beats and the rap sound and the R&B musical elements. Rap was pretty much coming and making its name known in the music game - and then the combination with R&B, that's when the emergence came.
The tone of the genre seemed darker, grittierespecially the bass lines. And the chords seemed darker in nature, too.
The chords were not darker - but I would agree
Back then it was Cross Colours - FUBU had clothing lines out with lots of colors. People did wear white in certain videos but that was just one look, you know? I look back at videos that I did and I did wear white [sometimes] but I also had lots of colors.
You were one of the first artists to feature other artists in your songs - like LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, Silk, Kut Klose and others. In fact, you put them front and center in the songs, rather than just have them pop in for a verse or serve as backing vocalists.
When you got Snoop Dogg featured on your stuff, what's the sense of featuring him if he's not really going to be featured? If I'm going to use you, I'm going to use you. I'm not going to use you for just eight bars - that's not a good admiration of the artist. That's not good enough for someone like Snoop or LL Cool J that I worked with back in the day. They were just as popular as I was, so I'm not going to bring them in for just a few bars [in a song].
I mean, if you're a songwriter and producer, that's what you're going to do. I'm just not going through it on my own, because that's what songwriters and producers do - they go find talent, discover new talent and other people that they can write for. I wrote for a lot of people: Immature, the O'Jays, Dru Hill. I mean, I didn't discover them, but they were people I wrote for. Silk is a group I discovered - and Kut Klose. That being said, of course I'm going to write for other people, but I'm also going to write for artists that I find as well.
Drum machines were prominently featured in your songs - and, in fact, the beats often served as the hook. Did you always hear the beat first - or did the music tend to come first?
The beat always came first. And that's where people like [producer] Teddy Riley came in - that's what he does. He's a beat guy and could program exactly what you wanted. I would usually do the music and add the chorus to it. But I would tell somebody with a [Roland] 808, you know, give me a better 808 sound or make it sound like this. Those are things that I would do.
Last question: Your music has been the inspiration for countless romantic moments between couples over the years. What is your go-to music for such occasions? Do you listen to your own stuff?
Yeah, I listen to my own stuff [laughs]. Sometimes I let the TV just rundepending on what's on TV at the moment. I'm not going to stop so I can put on some romantic song [laughs].
Something else you're known for is discovering talent. Was that always a priority for you or did it

LINCOLN AMPHITHEATRE
AUGUST 10 AT 7:30 P.M.
REINVIGORATED COUNTRY DUO ON BEING AN INSPIRATION TO FEMALE MUSICIANS, THE EMPOWERING MESSAGE BEHIND "MIRROR MIRROR," REDISCOVERING "PAINTED PONIES" AND MORE
Indiana-born sisters Ivy Dene and Sophie Dawn - collectively known as country duo Walker County - lay claim to one of the more unexpected musical journeys in recent memory, having emerged from the tiny town of Sulphur Springs as teenagers to sign a major label deal in Nashville. But despite periodic success with singles like "Drag It Out" and "Bits
+ Pieces," the two found themselves creatively dissatisfied after nearly a decade in the business. So in 2023 they jumped ship, opting to go the independent route. "For 10 years we worked to please everyone else - we thought, we're done with that," Ivy explains. "It was time to think about us, to look at a project and go, 'This is why we moved to Nashville; this is why
we love music."
Inspired like never before, Walker County reconvened with longtime co-writer Paul Sikes, sifting through a backlog of demos to find "songs that we loved and that stood the test of time." Most importantly, the tracks that made the cut for 2024's Painted Ponies celebrate the
sisters' classic country influences yet don't shy away from modern touches. It's a bridging of old and new sounds that makes for a fantastic collection, ranging from the freewheeling, light-hearted opener "20%" to the gorgeous closing title track which movingly sums up Ivy and Sophie's story to date.
As we're speaking, you're just a few days away from playing CMA Fest 2024.
IVY: We're excited to play the CMA Fest - it's been a few years. We've played it quite a few times and then Covid happened and all that, so we're excited to be back on the Hard Rock stage and see the craziness that CMA Fest is every year.
Even today, there are very few female drummers in music. Sophie, how did you wind up behind the kit?
SOPHIE: Oh my gosh, I love this question. I was 10-years-old and my dad surprised me with a sparkly drum kit. We had been playing bluegrass and gospel music and then we started getting booked for weddings. Dad was like, 'We're not going to be able to play some sad bluegrass at a wedding.' He was like, 'We got to get people on the dance floor; we need, you know, a beat.' So, I obviously showed interest in it [the drums] because I just thought it was so cool; I thought it would be neat, because I had never seen a girl drummer ever. So dad surprised me with the drum kit and I was just kind of self-taught for a long time and I just kind of found my own path in that - learned through trial and error. And it's been really amazing as a girl to see other small girls notice that, you know, it's an instrument that they can play. It seems off-limits and I love just kind of breaking that narrative.
And Ivy, did you just slip right into playing guitar?
IVY: I did - I was 12 when my dad sat me down and showed me how to play guitar. I absolutely fell in love with it and I want to say that the first song I learned to play was a Dolly [Parton] song. Dad said I picked it up super quick and was real natural - and I've been playing guitar
ever since; I love it.
Prior to releasing Painted Ponies, you put out an EP called No Smoke and Mirrors which featured "Mirror Mirror," a song that carries a timely message about self-acceptance in this era of social media. Has the song had a big impact on your female fans?
SOPHIE: Yeah, it has - it's been so cool to see it work its magic. When we wrote it back in 2019 we were opening up for Wynonna Judd and we tried it out on a crowd - I remember it was in Florida. And we got a standing ovation and then we had women coming up to us saying, 'I was balling my eyes out - where can I listen to that song?' It wasn't out yet, but I think that was the biggest sign to us that it was something that other women needed to hear - not just me and Ivy when we wrote it. We wrote it kind of for ourselves and once we played it out we realized a lot of women were feeling the same way.
Opening track "20%" off of Painted Ponies is an absolute barnburner, recalling the golden era of 90's country. It's also replete with clever, fun wordplay like, "When it comes to love, no, I can't deal with fractions."
IVY: It's really fun to write songs like "20 Percent" and "Double Wide World" [off of the new album] - those kind of songs that have a lot of wordplay, because it's easy to write those heartbreak songs because they pull from so much emotion... then when you get to cut loose [like on "20 Percent"] and think of funny lines that rhyme together, it's a blast.
Then there's "Handwritten" which speaks to old guys like myself that miss the pre-social media days of writing letters and more expressive communication in general.
SOPHIE: Oh my goodness, we love "Handwritten." That was one we wrote pretty early on in our time in Nashville and it just stuck with us throughout the years. I think it proved its timelessness to us. It's so true - everyone wants an intentional love where you're pursued with words, and, you know, everybody loves a handwritten letter. Our grandparents
would write, and, you know, you look back at those times when that was the only form of communication. It's so neat and it's something special.
The closing title track off the new album is perhaps Walker County's finest hour - or 3 minutes and 37 seconds, to be exact. It recalls classic country artists like Crystal Gayle with gorgeous vocals underpinned by old school instrumentation.
IVY: We were sitting around on our living room floor listening to all the songs that we'd written with Paul and he was there. I remember we just had a work tape of "Painted Ponies" which I think we wrote in 2015. I said, 'Oh my gosh, I forgot about this one' and put it on; we all just kind of sat there in silence and Paul was like, 'Oh my gosh, we have to cut this song.' So we ended up going to cut "Painted Ponies" and it just kind of sounds like the end of a movieyou can see the credits start rolling. I feel like, for Sophie and I, it kind of sums up our journey in Nashville and being able to ride off into the sunset finally. Getting off that carousel and chasing our dreams for real this time. And so "Painted Ponies" spoke to us as the title trackwe felt like it had to close the record and also be the name of the record because the song was so important.

WNIN JAZZ FEST & MORE
DOWNTOWN EVANSVILLE / JULY 20 / 4-10 P.M.
FREE MAIN STREET EVENT PROMISES A DYNAMIC EVENING OF LIVE MUSIC, TASTY WINES AND DELICIOUS FOOD
For years, the Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Fest located on Locust Street was a staple in downtown Evansville, offering music fans a wonderful evening of live performances, plus a variety of exquisite wines to sample and local eats to enjoy. But the event eventually ran its course, leaving a noticeable hole in the summer schedule. Thankfully, WNIN has stepped in to fill the gap, pretty much picking up where things left off. The song remains the same, as they say, and the sweet sounds of jazz music are back - this time on Main Street (2 Main Street, to be exact). So are bottles of high quality wine and the area's best food trucks, making for the sort of entertaining and delicious evening the tri-state has been pining for ever since the demise of the previous festival.
While some folks may be zeroed in on the food and drinks, most patrons will undoubtedly come for the tunes and rest assured, the music lineup for WNIN Jazz Fest is off the charts. In addition to the incomparable multiinstrumentalist Monte Skelton, who will headline the occasion, you can look forward to sizzling sets by Bokeh Big Band, The Sidemen Trio and The Tom Drury Quartet. Doesn't get much better. Especially considering the event is FREE to all ages in attendance (there is a $10 entry fee for the beer & wine garden). So bring the whole family as kids can have tons of fun playing in the inflatables provided by Legendary Inflatables & Rentals.

EVANSVILLE of A TASTE
MONTHLY FOOD REVIEW WITH BRIAN BUXTON
Known almost as much for its year-round Christmas décor as its cuisine, the House of Como has been an Evansville institution and dining destination since 1960. The Santa Claus on the roof welcomes hungry patrons, while the Christmas lights and photos inside bring a smile to their faces. Founder George Hage grew up in Chicago and was discharged from the military in 1949, moving to Evansville in 1952. He introduced the original Chicago pizza (square-cut tavern style) to the Evansville area in 1953, at the original Roca Bar on Kentucky Avenue. He opened the first House of Como location at the Brown Derby Motel. After a fire destroyed the building in 1969, the restaurant re-opened down the street, in the former location of Hamilton’s Drive-In. It's operated today by his daughter, Libby. So… what is the meaning of the uncommon décor? George fought in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, and was captured as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany. He vowed that if he made it out of the prison camp alive, he would celebrate every day as if it were Christmas. The interior of the restaurant he opened is a testament to that promise, as well as a tribute to his love of horse racing.
Although the menu includes American and Italian dishes, the standouts are the Steaks, Lamb, and Lebanese/Arabian fare. In my opinion, dinner should always start with an order of Kibi Nea (minced raw ground beef mixed with durum wheat), served with raw white onion petals. Also, don’t miss the Arabian salad (fresh tomatoes, crisp green pepper and lettuce, tossed in a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and fresh mint), served with Arabian flatbread. Your next choice may consist of a massive T-bone prepared Pittsburgh style (heated to a very high temp very quickly, so it’s charred on the outside, but
rare on the inside), or a Brandy-marinated Shish Kabob. The Rack of Lamb or the Lamb Chops are an excellent choice (order them with mint jelly), as are the Pork Chops, cut two inches thick and served two-to-a-plate. A bacon wrapped Filet can be enjoyed served over Spaghetti Marinara, “Father Bradley style,” which his spaghetti noodles, butter, oil and garlic, topped with stewed tomatoes, or classically served on white toast.
Italian choices include Lasagna, Ravioli, or Spaghetti with Marinara. If you prefer seafood, the menu offers Shrimp Cocktail,
COMO IS ONE OF THE "MUST VISIT" LANDMARK
RESTAURANTS FOR LOCALS AND THOSE VISITING FROM OUT OF TOWN ALIKE. IT'S THE ONLY PLACE IN TOWN TO ENJOY LEBANESE FARE.
Fried Shrimp, and blackened or grilled Orange Roughy and Salmon. A unique dish is the Djage (baked chicken served over cinnamon rice with pine nuts). One of my favorites as an appetizer or entrée is the Yebra Malfoof (cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and seasoned ground beef).
Sides include a Baked Potato, Lyonnaise Potatoes (pan fried with white onions), and Loubia (green beans cooked with white onions and tomatoes). They also have some fantastic desserts - a delicious Whiskey Bread Pudding, decadent Chocolate Molten Lava cake, and some of the best Baklava you'll ever have. Crispy and buttery Fillo held together with honey and lots of ground Pistachios.
Como is one of the "must visit" landmark restaurants for locals and those visiting from out of town alike. It's the only place in town to enjoy Lebanese fare. Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure
Deviled eggs always remind me of holiday family gatherings, especially in the summer. Growing up, the deviled eggs I consumed always contained the classic mayonnaise that is full of soybean oil, high fructose corn syrup, and sometimes even a sweet relish. After learning how to read labels correctly and removing ingredients that serve little to no good, I found a super clean and delicious tasting mayonnaise (without all of the junk). Avocado oil-based mayonnaise is tangy and savory. When making deviled eggs recently, I thought they would be so good with bacon added. After seeing BLT on a menu, it got me thinking about the best way to have a higher protein option, thus, I put together two classic summer favorites.
BLT DEVILED EGGS
(12 Egg Sandwiches)
CLEAN BITE life
INGREDIENTS:
• 12 HARD BOILED EGGS
• 2/3 C. AVOCADO OIL-BASED MAYONNAISE (I RECOMMEND PRIMAL KITCHEN OR SIR KENSINGTON’S)
• 1 T. YELLOW MUSTARD
• 2 TSP. PICKLE JUICE
DIRECTIONS:
• SALT & PEPPER
• ½ LB. OF BACON (PEDERSON’S FARMS GREAT BRAND)
• 1-2 TOMATOES
• LETTUCE (VARIETY YOUR CHOICE)
1. COOK BACON AND LET COOL. WHILE COOKING THE BACON, SLICE THE TOMATOES INTO A SIZE THAT WILL FIT NICELY ON THE DEVILED EGG.
2. HARD BOIL 12 EGGS.
3. AFTER THE EGGS HAVE COOLED, SLICE THE EGGS IN HALF LENGTHWISE AND PUT THE YOLKS INTO A SEPARATE BOWL.
4. TAKE A FORK AND MASH UP THE YOLKS INTO A FINE LIKE POWDER.
5. ADD IN THE MAYONNAISE, YELLOW MUSTARD, AND PICKLE JUICE. STIR UNTIL THE CONSISTENCY IS SMOOTH.
6. ADD SALT & PEPPER BASED ON TASTE PREFERENCE.
7. ADD THE YOLK MIXTURE TO A PIPING BAG (IF DESIRED) AND PIPE INTO ONE SIDE OF THE EGG WHITE.
8. TOP EACH DEVILED EGG WITH A SMALL PIECE OF BACON, TOMATO SLICE, AND PIECE OF LETTUCE. PUT THE EMPTY EGG WHITE ON TOP TO CREATE A “SANDWICH”. IF YOU ARE SERVING THEM TO A GUEST YOU MAY ADD A TOOTHPICK TO HOLD TOGETHER.
9. SERVE IMMEDIATELY AND ENJOY!
*The leftover yolk mixture makes a great dip for raw veggies. You can serve it on a veggie tray to your guests with the BLT deviled eggs!

NOMADIC ROCK BAND WITH TRI-STATE TIES SCORES
COVETED SUPPORT SLOT ON PACKAGE TOUR FEATURING POWERMAN 5000, SPONGE AND TANTRIC
Thanks to advances in technology like computer recording software and Zoom calls, today's bands don't necessarily need to live in the same city or state to stay connected and function as a unit. In the case of CloZure, a long-running nomadic rock act originally based in Alabama, its members - including founders Michael Cordle (lead/rhythm guitar), Matthew Russell (rhythm/lead guitar) and Michael McCann (drums) - are now dispersed throughout the south and beyond. McCann, in fact, is employed as a contractor in India, jetting in when needed for tours and studio sessions and, presumably, racking up frequent flyer miles like nobody's business. The band's most recent recruitment, bassist Zack Taylor, resides a little closer to home, so to speak, in the small town of Fordsville, Kentucky, where the music scene is mostly non-existent - which explains why he's often looked to Evansville and Owensboro for gigging opportunities over the last several years, including playing with local rock band DRK WTR for a brief spell in 2023. Prior to that, Taylor served as one half of Zack Jennings, a country duo that caught the eye - and ears - of a national promotional company. "They wanted to get us in the right
WE GOT HER IN FOR REHEARSALS AND THE MINUTE SHE STARTED SINGING WE WERE LIKE WHAT THE F***K JUST HAPPENED?
rooms and see what happened," he says. "They booked me to open for CloZure in Owensboro at the last minute and we had an awesome time together." That positive encounter would ultimately lead Cordle, Russell and McCann to draft Taylor in when a spot opened up in the band's rhythm section.
That was back in 2022 when CloZure was still fronted by a male vocalist and presented a very Nickelback/3 Doors Down-type vibe with releases like "Foolish Man" and "The Vow" - both well-written and well-performed songs that helped to pad the group's following, particularly online. But shortly after, the guys found themselves without
a singer - and that's when the story of CloZure, and, subsequently, Taylor's musical life, got a whole lot more interesting. Enter Nikollaj Lleshi, an Albanian-born force of nature who, through kismet, appeared on CloZure's manager's radar after splitting from her band. "She's toured with The Used and everybody - she's kind of a legend," Taylor gushes. "We got her in for rehearsals and the minute she started singing we were like what the f***k just happened? She fit in with how we played and everything just perfectly." Lleshi not only slotted in with ease, she completely changed the dynamic of the band, both with her powerhouse, far-ranging vocals and striking presence. Her first collaboration with CloZure, the urgent, melodramatic "The Devil Effect" - accompanied by a visually-stunning Thomas Crane-shot videosignaled an exciting new beginning with over-thetop reactions from fans old and new alike. Which has translated to hundreds of thousands of streams and views between Spotify and YouTube alone. Same goes for the deliciously moody follow-up, "Nevermore."
Now the members of CloZure are set to reconvene in person this month, having scored a coveted support slot on a package tour featuring Powerman 5000, Sponge and Tantric. After a brief respite, they'll head back out on the road this fall with Fozzy and Nocturnal Affair. The sky's the limit.

BORN TO ROCK: AREA'S NEWEST HARDCORE BAND DROPS DEBUT EP, PREPS FOR RECORD RELEASE SHOW THIS MONTH AT DAMSEL BREW PUB
The way Nathan Todd tells it, he and fellow employee
Mason Bradley spent two years working together at Evansville's east side Target store before ever broaching the subject of music. But once they did, the floodgates opened. "We hit it off instantly," Todd recalls. Those intense conversations initially led to the formation of Early Morning, a posthardcore project still going strong that gives a major nod to the Deftones - but Bradley, who's surely one of the busiest musicians in town as a member of several bands, was also looking to explore a more groove-based rock sound with hardcore elements. Though a drummer himself, most notably having provided the driving slap beats for Fleshhole's 2020 punk/thrash classic, Momo Chug , he reached out to Darin Harger, another area rhythm specialist, in August of last year to get the proverbial ball rolling - the idea being that Bradley, freed from the chains of the kit, could then explore uncharted frontman territory. The two then informed Todd that he had roughly 60 days to learn bass guitar and be a part of Grow Blind. A drummer at heart, he was unfamiliar with rocking stringed instruments, but youth knows no fear. Challenge accepted.
The intriguing moniker, by the way, came courtesy of the fourth and final member drafted in for the project, guitarist Caleb Kimpel. As Bradley hilariously notes, "He must have had an encyclopedia of band names just preparing for this day. We basically just thought Grow Blind was two words and catchy. And my theory is that once a band practices five times or plays a show with a name, then it stands." But Kimpel didn't just provide the name, he also walked into rehearsal one day with a white-hot riff that turned into lead single "Born to Lose" and set
the template for the band's sound - which some have likened to Turnstile, a popular hardcore punk band from Baltimore. "We all love that band - we're inspired by them and so of course we're going to steal [from them] and recreate," Bradley says with a hint of sarcasm. "But we're not trying to be anybody but ourselves - four good friends that like sharing 30 minutes with each other on stage."
Speaking of live shows, Grow Blind made their debut in late 2023 at Your Brother's Bookstore in downtown Evansville, playing a short set to nearly 250 people that, by all accounts, were going relatively bonkers. Even better, the event raised some serious cash for the Salvation Army and several bins of toys were collected for donation. The evening also proved, perhaps most importantly, that moving from the back to the front of the stage was a good decision for Bradley, as those in attendance willfully followed his lead, bouncing up and down to the heavy, hip hop-inflected beats and often shouting the singer's own lyrics back at him. "It was my best live experience since Fleshhole," he confidently states.
Having come out of the gate hot in the live arena, Grow Blind next set their sights on recording a proper EP, opting for the impeccable production services of Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording. They unanimously agreed to tackle "Born to Lose" first, a band fave, and filmed a super-charged performance video shot by Harger that's already nearing 4000
views on YouTube and spawned a new dance craze known as the "BTL Shuffle"take that, Turnstile. Buoyed by the initial reaction to both the song and the visual accompaniment, the guys reconvened with Tyner a month or so later and knocked out "Come and Get It," "Silver" and "Get a Grip" - all infused with a rock/hardcore edge and irrepressible grooves as Bradley's commanding vocals vacillate between militant-like pronouncements, infectious chants and borderline rapping. And it's all given the royal Tyner treatment that so many area bands seek out. Long story short: great songs, great production.
With the EP out as of late May, Grow Blind looks forward to a proper record release show this month on Sunday, July 21 at Damsel Brew Pub. They'll be joined by Mile End, Better Empty and Low Blow for an all-ages event that's not to be missed. $10 at the door, show starts at 7 p.m. Be there!

Imagine loving a particular beer so much that you felt compelled to write a suite of songs about it - but even that wasn't enough to prove your undying devotion. There was still more to say, more melodies to write in honor of said brew. Now imagine that the beer in question was Hamm's out of Minnesota, land of sky blue waters. Seriously. This is not a joke. Well, The Chugs, Evansville's surf punk trio, do sing and play with their tongues firmly lodged in their cheeks. But make no mistake, these guys rock and then some. For all the silliness at the heart of their Hamm's obsession, the songs that members Scott Wambach (guitar/vocals), Brian Harding (bass/vocals) and Sam Kuban (drums/vocals) create together are super-charged with unstoppable energy, instantly memorable choruses and topnotch musicianship. All of which was readily apparent on 2023's The Cancept Album, a thoroughly refreshing 6 pack in service of cheap beer.
Just over a year later, the boys are back with Hey Neighbor!, another supremely kinetic collection of Hamm's-inspired tunes - 6 pack #2, as it were - recorded and produced by Wambach through Wally Opus Records in Evansville. And, hey listener, it ups the ante in every way - the pop elements are even more pleasing; the punk bits more frenetic; the surf infusions more driving with more twang. Preceding the new EP, it should be noted, The Chugs released a flipped-script cover of Phantom Planet's "California," fashioning it, appropriately, into "Minnesota" (a future state anthem, for sure). Still not satisfied, the band then filmed a shot-for-shot remake of the original video. Check it out on YouTube!

FORMER ATLAS OF THE DOGS FRONTMAN EMBARKING ON NEW SOLO VENTURE, DROPS DEBUT SINGLE "SUPERFICIAL" VIA EVANSVILLE-BASED WALLY OPUS RECORDS
Even as he was making some of the best rock music in the tri-state over the last few years while fronting Atlas of the Dogs, Jaxon Fleming looked to evolve creativelysomething the powerhouse singer teased with one of the band's final singles, "Running," which dialed down the vocal histrionics and musical heft at the heart of previous releases like "Depth" and "Barely Breathing" in favor of a subtler, more emotional vibe. Now, with the dissolution of the Dogs, Fleming's embarking on a new solo venture in a somewhat similar vein, having rebranded himself "Jax" and signed with Evansville-based Wally Opus Records. Ultimately, this partnership sees the talented songwriter "embracing his experience as frontman rooted in his real life story and punctuated with his commitment to "do it right" this time around."
Influenced early on by the likes of Aerosmith, Soundgarden and other big rock acts, Fleming, with the release of "Superficial" last month, has re-imagined his sound to reflect alternative/indie inspirations such as Cage The Elephant, Tame Impala and Glass Animals. Where a song like "Barely Breathing" went for the jugular, this new solo single aims for your mind, body and soul, slowly drawing the listener in with a near-hypnotic groove and mournful four-chord progression before Fleming's understated yet intense vocals are introduced. His tone, quite impressively, strikes a delicate balance between sultry and sophisticated, sincere and cynical. Safe to say "Superficial" could see success via a number of radio/streaming formats: pop, rock, alternative/indie - there's even a hint of R&B here. Stay tuned.
"Superficial" is available on major streaming platforms. For more info, visit wallyopus.com.

July movie releases feature a space race rom-com, long overdue sequel and the buddy comedy everyone wanted
FLY ME TO THE MOON
Nothing captures the swinging sixties better than the spicy space race - the Soviets vs. the Americans. Fly Me to the Moon takes the rocket run full throttle, flying dangerously into rom-com territory. Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum are both capitalizing on their retro charm and beauty, flawlessly fitting into the skin of the sixties. The “enemy” is winning the race and U.S. citizens have a poor perspective of the space program. Apollo 11 is still in its pregnancy stage and Johansson’s fiery marketing executive is hired by NASA to douse it with a bit more rocket fuel. Her job is to convince Americans of the celestial wonders of the universe and what mankind is capable of doing to reach it. Or as the trailer quips, to “sell the moon.” Cue Tatum’s stubborn, hearty astronaut. Will their love fall into orbit? Even more importantly, will we find out if Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing after all? IN THEATERS 7/12
TWISTERS
Studio executives know resurrecting a beloved film is not an exact science. Some films, frankly, are just freaks of nature. Twister stole the hearts of moviegoers in 1996, anchored by the fierce chemistry between Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. So why not dust the cobwebs off the old weather siren? Plunging Hollywood's latest darlings, Daisy Edgar Jones and Glen Powell, into the center of this sequel is a whip-smart move on production’s part. They aren’t reinventing the wheel, but adding some much-needed modern upgrades as storm chasers on opposite sides of the coin: Jones is data-driven as Kate Cooper while Powell is followers-driven as social media influencer Tyler Owens. The trailer has racked up well over 20 million views thanks to the hints of tornadoes combining, being set ablaze and even shooting off fireworks like it’s the 4th of July at Holiday World. Taking place against the picturesque open plains of Oklahoma, this remake looks set to blow-up like an F5. IN THEATERS 7/19
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
Finally, these two super-powered knuckleheads have their own buddy comedy. To be fair, this dizzying duo could spend the whole two hours on screen talking smack at a Waffle House and it would probably still be great. As for the actual movie, the banter will be bountiful, fight scenes abundant and the glory... well, there will most likely be some gore along the way to achieve it. Ryan Reynold’s Wade Wilson has been living a quaint domestic life when he’s jostled into a new timeline by the Time Variance Authority. (I gather this is the creative loophole if the two were previously dead?) He and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) must join together as the universe faces an existential threat. The Crown’s Emma Corrin plays Cassandra Nova, evil twin sister to infamous mutant Charles Xavier. Similar to her brother, she possesses explosive telekinesis and telepathic powers; however, she uses them for ill purposes, causing some major trouble for our grumpy, sensitive, silver-tongued superheroes. TRUE CRIME JUNKIE
WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER
REX HEUERMANN: AN UPDATE ON THE ALLEGED GILGO BEACH SERIAL KILLER
While infamous convicted murderer
Scott Peterson continues his push for a new trial (unlikely at best), the biggest news in true crime of late is the discovery of further shocking evidence against alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann. It was nearly a year ago that the now 60-year-old Long Island architect was taken into custody under suspicion of quadruple homicide, linked to the deaths of four sex workers over the span of many years beginning in 2000. Yet authorities were convinced that Heuermann, as sadistic as they come, was responsible for the disappearances of up to 11 women in the area. Recent developments in the case only support this theory, thanks to further DNA matches and the uncovering of a disturbing planning document - a virtual blueprint for the selection, kidnapping and torture of his victims.
This document, reportedly modified over time, was stored on a hard drive in the basement of the New York home Heuermann shared with his wife and children (it's been noted that the family members were completely unaware they were co-habitating with a monster). It addressed "problems" that could occur during the commission of his crimes, including DNA, fingerprints, tire marks, foot/shoe prints and hair and fibers, while also listing "supplies" needed to carry out his deplorable actions: booties, lye/ acid, police scanner, rope cord, saw, tarps, bags, etc. Strangely, Heuermann purposely(?) misspelled words throughout the document. For instance, rather than "lye" listed above, he opted for "lie" - and elsewhere, when reminding himself to destroy evidence, he typed "distroy." These misspellings occur repeatedly
throughout, adding yet another mysterious layer to the case. Some true crime experts hypothesize that Heuermann used a voice-activated system which resulted in the errors, while others imagine he was under the influence of drugs, a common practice of serial killers.
Not only has the legal noose around Heuermann's neck tightened with the discovery of the planning document, but DNA has linked him to two more murders in the Gilgo Beach area, bringing the total to six with more charges anticipated. One thing's certain: most everyone who came into contact with the alleged serial killer found him to be an intimidating, controlling individual - personality traits only heightened by his enormous stature. Heuermann, it seems, had all the hallmarks of a psychopath and likely would have continued his reign of terror if not tripped up by trace evidence and some ace detective work. Of course, he'll have his day in court - there's no guarantee Heuermann will be found guilty. However, everything keeps pointing to his way; he's either the unluckiest man alive or the man responsible for these horrible crimes - and potentially many more. My money is on the latter.
"ONE THING'S CERTAIN: MOST EVERYONE WHO CAME INTO CONTACT WITH THE ALLEGED SERIAL KILLER FOUND HIM TO BE AN INTIMIDATING, CONTROLLING INDIVIDUAL.

notes that while Kong presented as shy and really nervous at the meet & greet, "you could tell he was a sweet boy."
KONG
VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT
Evansville's Madison Meurer can't recall a time in her life without the company of a dog. As a child, she lived out in the country where she made fast friends with a variety of furry creatures, developing a deep love for animals that's carried full-on into adulthood; in fact, Meurer wishes she could "rescue a million dogs" - a testament to the young teacher's big heart. For now, she's starting small (in number, that is), having recently adopted a loveable - and adorably chunkythree-year-old Black Lab mix after moving into her own place. "I knew I wanted to create my own little family with a dog," Meurer says, "and I've
always believed in rescuing an animal rather than going to a breeder."
With that in mind, Meurer made a trip to the Vanderburgh Humane Society a few weeks back where she found the perfect match in "Kong," falling in love with the appropriately-named big fella almost immediately. "The first thing I noticed was that he was a bit chunky which I thought was really cute," she recalls. "And he was funny when I was trying to take pics of him to send to friends - he knew when the camera came out; he'd turn his head like he had a little attitude, a little personality. He was so cute and he just wanted love." Meurer further
Kong has reportedly wasted no time settling into his forever home, quickly making himself comfortable on Meurer's bed at night, seemingly unconcerned that his owner can barely find the room to sleep. "He takes up the whole mattress," she says with a laugh. And while there was an initial concern about separation anxiety and Kong's disinterest in his toys, he's fully engaged now and trusted to roam around the house freely when Meurer is out, neither causing any damage nor suffering a single accident to date. "New dogs I've always had to keep in a kennel when I leave the house, but Kong just jumps in bed and waits for me to come home," she says. "I can tell that he's really happy."

AS I TYPE THIS... IT'S RAINING FELONIES
WMan, oh man, a lot has happened in the world of politics since my last column. Surely there's hardly a human on the planet, even during these head-under-the-pillow days, unaware that former President Donald Trump was recently convicted of 34 felonies as a result of hush money paid to a porn star (it's a lot more complicated than that, of course, but I only have so much room). Predictably, his supporters could care less and some pundits are even claiming that this stain on DJT's legal record only heightens his chances of returning to the White House. That might be a stretch, but polls certainly seem to show little downturn - it's not like the guy's in political freefall. Crunch the numbers and the upcoming election still looks like a coin toss, a bad sign for Biden who's crossing his bony fingers that food and gas prices miraculously decline by November. By the way, while I'm on the subject of committing crimes, it's truly fascinating that in America being convicted of multiple felonies doesn't bar you from running for president, though it likely disqualifies you from working most any other job, no matter how low on the totem pole. Applying for a minimum wage third-shift janitorial job that includes weekends? Sorry,
pal - not with that record! But hey, there's a position you're eligible for if you don't mind relocating to Washington, D.C. and aren't squeamish about being in charge of the country's nuclear codes. All kidding aside - and keeping right on with the crime theme - Trump now has company because the current president's son was also recently convicted of multiple felonies. Only three, comparatively speaking, but that's nothing to sneeze at, folks.
Unfortunately for Hunter Biden, his dad has no intention of pardoning him, despite the possibility of serious time behind bars for the felony gun charges. Trump could also face jail time, it should be noted - we'll find out July 11 when the sentencing takes place - but that seems unlikely. Right now everyone's just arguing about whether either of these highprofile fellas would have been prosecuted were it not for their political ties. (I couldn't tell you - I'm still 83 credit hours away from obtaining my law degree.) Regardless, the upcoming first presidential debate should
be quite the show with both sides inevitably accusing the other of being criminal and unfit for office. Good times. More than ever I'm left with a sinking feeling about the country's future - though it could just be the shrimp lo mein coming back to bite me. Still four months to go, mind you, so we'll see what's on the horizon; maybe RFK Jr.'s reported brain worm will turn him into a serial killer or something equally crazy. Heck, as much as Americans love true crime, it would probably increase his popularity ten-fold and pave the way to the White House. Side note: Does being a murderer discount you from running for president? I'll look into it for next month's column.
REGARDLESS, THE UPCOMING FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE SHOULD BE QUITE THE SHOW WITH BOTH SIDES INEVITABLY ACCUSING THE OTHER OF BEING CRIMINAL AND UNFIT FOR OFFICE.

"GROOM IS UPSET BECAUSE HIS SISTER DOESN’T WANT TO ATTEND HIS CLOTHING-FREE NATURIST WEDDING"
Afraid I'm going to have to side with the sister on this one. I mean, nothing much surprises me anymore, but this takes the (wedding) cake. Could you imagine inviting your sibling to a nude-fest while you profess undying love for your partner? Free country and all, but no thanks. What I really want to know is, will this dude invite his sis to the inevitable fully-clothed divorce proceedings?
"FANS MOCK JOJO SIWA FOR SEEMINGLY GETTING DRUNK IN A ROOM BY HERSELF ON HER 21ST BIRTHDAY"
Ever since JoJo started dressing like Gene Simmons from KISS the Yahoo algorithm has been directing stories about her my way. Seems like a nice enough kid, though her fans could use a course in politeness. Nothing to laugh at here, really - especially if JoJo got juiced on Boone's Farm wine. That's how I celebrated my Big 2-1 and I've never looked back.
"TORI SPELLING SAYS SHE CAN’T POOP OR PEE WITHOUT HER 7-YEAR-OLD SON WATCHING"
In the name of all that is holy, this has to be the mother of all TMI "news" stories. What's even more disturbing about this unwanted revelation from Spelling is that before separating from husband Dean McDermott, she reportedly also requested his presence when it was go-time. Gee, can't imagine why he jetted... While I have grave concerns about Spelling's mental health, I'm even more worried about the kid - not only does he have to suffer through these daily bathroom rituals, there's going to come a day when he discovers just what a terrible actress his mother was. Sad.
"HUMANS AND NEANDERTHALS ONLY HAD SEX FOR A BRIEF PERIOD, BUT IT STILL FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGED OUR DNA"
Ok, now the whole Tori Spelling bathroom bonanza makes total sense. She clearly was born with a little extra Neanderthal DNA than the rest of us. To be fair, the world is full of so many morons that the percentage of humans carrying bonus caveman genes must be staggeringly high. Mercifully, all these people are too stupid to realize how dumb they are.
"REPO MAN 'DRIVES OFF' WITH BABY STILL IN MOM'S CAR, EVANSVILLE POLICE SAY"
I'll end with a feel-good story right from our own backyard. What started out as a suspected kidnapping of a local infant turned out to be an honest mistake by a guy simply doing his job. Reportedly, an Eville repo man never saw the baby in the backseat of the car he was recently assigned to reclaim, but was alerted to the dire situation as he drove off. Said baby was quickly reunited with its mother - a rare happy ending.

WHAT IS ONE LITTLE THING YOU DO DAILY THAT BRINGS YOU JOY AND HAPPINESS?
We overthink happy. I personally think happiness and joy are mostly found in the small things we do, touch, see, and interact with every single day. The things you touch most every day, make it beautiful, funny, or meaningful to you! Cups, plates, dish towels, blankets, art…bring beauty to your space! This includes fancy lingerie, good smelling perfume, and nice lotions and creams. From the coffee cup you use first thing in the morning, to the best smelling face cream before you go to bed, make it something that makes you happy. I personally LOVE my coffee mug that says, “We will dance on the grave of the patriarchy and drink the bitter tears of mediocre men,” and it brings me immense joy! It’s also a great conversation starter, an even better warning. “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” ~ William Morris, this is one of the times a man isn’t wrong. ;-)
WHAT ARE THE MUST-GROW THINGS IF YOU HAVE A SMALL GARDEN OR PATIO CONTAINERS?
I know, you think I’m going to say grow cannabis (to be fair, you can just blame it on me if you get caught), but a kitchen garden is the way to go, and can all be done in containers or pots! Rosemary, basil, mint, oregano, mint, chives, dill, all very easy! During the winter, bring them in to bask under a sunny window, and put them back outside in the spring! There is nothing like fresh, FREE herbs in your kitchen!
WHAT IS ONE OF THE COOLEST COMMUNITY THINGS YOU HAVE SEEN RECENTLY?
THE LIBRARY OF THINGS from the EVPL!! It is literally the freaking coolest! Kayaks, binoculars, stand mixers… the list is fantastic! Want to try out expensive cooking gadgets before you buy and make sure you are interested or need for a special project? BORROW it from the library!! If you aren’t using the resources of the local library, you are missing out. They really are a vital piece of a vibrant community, and ours is one of the best!
I PERSONALLY THINK HAPPINESS AND JOY ARE MOSTLY FOUND IN THE SMALL THINGS WE DO, TOUCH, SEE, AND INTERACT WITH EVERY SINGLE DAY. “
WHAT IS THE WOMEN’S EQUIVALENT OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE?
There has been this great social media intrigue caused by many men admitting they think about the Roman Empire at least once a week. Of course, women were surprised to hear this, so the question was posed to women! If the ladies don’t think about the Roman Empire, then what is your equivalent? These are mine, and I’d love for you to share your list!

MUST-READ: THE WOMEN BY KRISTIN HANNAH
This book is an utterly heartbreaking, beautiful, inspirational story of the bravery of the nurses of the Vietnam War. Forgotten, abandoned after the war, not recognized as veterans of combat, yet being smack dab in the middle of a ruthless war and dealing with carnage of epic proportions, it is a profoundly written historical fiction. My Daddy Mike was a two-tour Vietnam veteran and dealt for years with the effects of being in long-term active combat. He didn’t share ANY stories of his time in Vietnam for many years, until much later in life. This is a must-read, it is also fantastic on Audible, and sheds light on so much of what the late 60’s and early 70’s were dealing with, not just in terms of a nation at war, but Women’s Rights, Civil Rights, addiction issues (*tw), and a society in crisis.
GADGET OF THE MONTH: MOTION SENSOR LIGHTS
I know, I know. You were expecting a sex toy. We’ll do that another month. But this month, it’s an Amazon find for little motion sensor lights that you stick in cabinets, and I had no idea $15 could bring me such contentment. I added these to the big, dark, cavernous kitchen cabinets, and under the sink, and I refuse to admit my guilt in how many times I opened the cabinets to marvel in the light. BILLIE EILISH
Hit Me Hard and Soft Darkroom/Interscope Records
The grunge-pop teen we first fell in love with for being such a bad guy is growing up. At 22, with nearly 120 million Instagram followers, Billie Eilish is a buffet for the world. She’s confidently and freely exploring her sexuality with the flirty “Lunch,” teasing her taste for girls. Ironically, brother and cocollaborator Finneas is helping her pen and produce these avantpop songs. I have a feeling he opted out of the writing session for that one. Jokes aside, the musical duo is like lightning in a bottle, poetry flowing in an interconnected loop of words and rhymes. Over 10 tracks, Billie and Finneas trap fireflies and then set them free in our ears ASMR style. You’ll need a Q-tip to remove the glow-y goo caked in your eardrum a few days post-cathartic listen. Fresh off an Oscar win for their achingly beautiful “What I Am I Made For?” that candy-coated the Barbie movie with raw emotion, the siblings have tapped into another musical realm with this latest studio effort. Billie’s sultry, sweet falsetto shimmers in opener “Skinny,” while the breathy “Blue” closes out the album. In between, the macabre “Birds of a Feather” haunts you; “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” ignites the rocker in you; and “The Diner” is a musical dish best served hot. As for Billie, well, she’s sizzling. - Marisa Patwa
MEGHAN TRAINOR
Timeless Epic Records
Doo-wop queen Meghan Trainor is putting in the WERK. Just as her second son gets ready to blow out his first birthday candle, she releases her sixth major studio album? Any parent knows it takes a village, which is why she recruited the help of producers and collaborators T-Pain, Federico Vindver, Lawrence, Grant Boutin and Gian Stone to flesh out her vision. Timeless has the right magic to become a classic, oozing in pink bubble gum pop and leaving you in a chewing psychosis. Meghan has always dominated in her music videos with a punchy, defiant confidence that’s contagious. So it was easy for her to sample Niecy Nash’s acceptance speech from the 75th Primetime Emmys last year when she thanked herself for winning an award in “I Wanna Thank Me.” “Been Like This” featuring T-Pain is a fun summer bop; then there's the cupid stupid “Crowded Room." Elsewhere, feminist anthem “Rollin” is fluttered with string and brass, while Meghan playfully indulges in the rhythmically Cuban “I Don’t Do Maybe.” I definitely do maybe love this album. - Marisa Patwa
CHECK OUT THESE HONEST REVIEWS OF SOME OF THE HOTTEST NEW ALBUMS
ZAYN Room Under the Stairs Mercury/Republic Records
"Smooth" doesn’t begin to cover Zayn’s R&B melodies. Plot twist: his signature stylings are taking a backseat on this fourth studio album, as he surprisingly delves into the country landscape. Stepping in to produce is Nashville’s Dave Cobb, who has lent his talents to artists from Chris Stapleton to Brandi Carlile. While British pop singer Zayn may not be typical of the sort of singers he normally works with, the two make for a solid team. As usual, the former One direction member delivers impassioned ballads via rugged crooning. The guitars strum sweetly in the soulfully rocking “Concrete Kisses,” while the piano pieces together our heart with a folksy Zayn in “How it Feels.” “Alienated” shakes your boots with his refined country falsetto as “Fuchsia Sea” touts itself as a harmonic symphony. In “Gates of Hell” Zayn lets out all of his angst from the past few years and you can feel it in your bones. He was already edgy, but there’s something even more mature about him now - he’s a dad making music out in suburban Pennsylvania. Zayn is no longer shrouded in the plastic mirage of teenage stardom. He’s raw and ready to share himself with us more than ever before. All you have to do is meet him in the room under the stairs...- Marisa Patwa
THOM YORKE Confidenza XL Recordings
Radiohead may have only released four albums in the last 20 years - a pittance in the eyes of their rabid fanbase - but music is still regularly being made by the various members of alternative rock's greatest band in the form of side projects and soundtracks. Case in point, frontman Thom Yorke and guitarist Johnny Greenwood, the two most prolific Heads, put out the second release by The Smile in early 2024, padding their collective discographies that include numerous film compositions. Which brings us to Confidenza, Yorke's latest solo venture, a goldmine for hardcore Radiohead devotees. Not to reduce this wonderfully abstract soundtrack to a nutshell, but basically, it's as if Kid A was set to the cinematic backdrop of an Italian thriller. Which works a charm. Even better, Yorke's other-worldly musical excursions can be thoroughly enjoyed completely separate from the film. So no need to cry over the now eight-year wait for a new Radiohead albumConfidenza should dry your tears. - Johnny Fletcher
PEARL JAM Dark Matter
Monkeywrench/Republic Records
Still waiting around for your favorite 90's band to return to the classic sound of Ten and Vs. ? Maybe next time. Well, doubtful, because Eddie Vedder and the boys don't seem terribly concerned about recreating the past; no, Pearl Jam simply make music for the love of it, always intent on breaking new ground - something that's abundantly clear on the band's 12th studio effort, Dark Matter . Right from the get-go it's clear that the heavy, frantic title track released ahead of the album was no aberration; "Scared of Fear" kicks the proceedings off in an equally aggressive manner, yet still retains the group's impeccable sense of melody. Vedder sounds as good as ever, but Stone Gossard and Mike McCready truly steal the show, the two guitarists working in tandem while playing off of each other like never before. And that's just the opener. Sure, there are typical PJ moments like "Setting Sun" and "Wreckage" that recall the old days, coming across like siblings of "Daughter" and "Elderly Woman..." but the magic really happens when the band goes full-board on the angular "React, Respond" and Ramones-inspired "Running." Nearly 35 years on from their celebrated debut, Pearl Jam should, by all rights, be slowing down. Thankfully, it seems someone forgot to forward the memo. - Johnny Fletcher
LIGHT OF ETERNITY Light of Eternity L.O.E. Records
With the sudden passing of Killing Joke's Geordie Walker in late 2023, the post-punk genre lost its greatest guitarist - and in turn, one of its truly legendary bands. Because Walker's signature sound drove the British quartet; without his instantly recognizable riffs effortlessly conjured from a hollow-body Gibson, there's simply no Killing Joke. Even so, the surviving members - all in their mid-sixties now - intend to stay creative, and the first post-Walker release recently appeared in the form of Light of Eternity's self-titled debut EP, a collaboration featuring KJ drummer Big Paul Ferguson, Fred Schreck (The Ancients) and Pauly Williams (Chaos 8). Musically, the four tracks here pick right up where Killing Joke left off, powered by metal-tinged guitar, massive synths and the unmistakable pounding of Ferguson behind the drum kit. Only thing missing, really, is the distinctive bellow of KJ frontman Jaz Coleman. Instead, the vocals tend to blend into the mix a bit, not quite landing the force of blows fans have come to expectthough the alternating between full-throated delivery and spoken word response is a nice touch. Best track: the immensely powerful closer, "Tipping Point." - Johnny Fletcher
BLUES WITH BRAGIN
BLACK CAT BONES
Troublemaker
Codacopina
Music
Tucson five-piece
Black Cat Bones return with Troublemaker , an eclectic album that explores blues, rock, jazz and soul. Things kick-off with “Bad Enough” as Richard Rivera and Kid Dynamite offer phenomenal guitar playing. “Jekyll and Hyde Woman” features vocalist Charles Pitts singing about a lady with wildly different personalities and his inability to escape the situation. A funkinfused beat on “Troublemaker” fits well with lyrics from Pitts about his involvement with someone who causes a lot of turmoil. “Junkie” starts off with excellent drumming from Bill Greenberg while Pitts sings about a woman whose love feels like a drug and Mark Holladay offers a guest appearance on keyboards with a psychedelic feel reminiscent of The Doors.
“Act Like You Don’t Care” gives Greenberg another chance to show off his prowess on the drums along with more great guitar work. A guest appearance from Billy Yates on guitar in “Soul to Save” adds more depth to a stellar song. “Come on Down” features an appearance from Mike Blommer playing top-notch guitar while Pitts sings about trying to seduce a lonely woman whose man is cheating on her. Heavy guitar features prominently on “Yesterday’s Gone” while Pitts sings about waiting for his woman to call so he can beg her to return home. “What I Should” allows Jeff Daniels to display his bass playing skills very well. GOOSE ISLAND SUMMERTIME KÖLSCH
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
This Kölsch pours a bright, clear orangeyellow with a thin head. It is slightly fruity on the nose with tropical flavors on the palate. It is crisp, clean and just a touch sweet with very little bitterness. This is very easy drinking and an ideal beach or lawnmower beer at 5% ABV.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
A thick white head crowns this Kölsch style beer and evaporates slowly. Sweet malt scents come to the forefront. The malt flavors remain with the first sip and stay in the long finish as the light body of the beer hits the tongue. This beer will see a rise in popularity during the hot summer months due to its easy drinkability. Pair it with lighter dishes like chicken, salads, salmon or bratwurst for a classic German pairing.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This is a clear amber-colored beer that lives up to its seasonal name - it's truly a summertime kind of beer, perfect for sipping by the pool or quenching your thirst after mowing the lawn. When you want something more than the average domestic beer, check this one out. It's very crisp and an all-around solid beer.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75
This fruited sour pours a bright algae green. On the nose it’s fruity, with mixed berry notes. On the palate it is light, fruity and only a touch sour, making it more like a hard fruited seltzer. Very little bitterness, and while not for everyone, I think it would surely appeal to the hard seltzer and cider drinking crowd.
PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5
A decent blue-tinted head forms on this bluegreen beer but evaporates somewhat quickly. Fruit scents fill the nose. A combination of sweet and sour fruit flavors hit the tongue with the initial tasting, with the sour notes becoming more prominent in the finish. This beer could see a rise in popularity during the hot summer months due to its low alcohol content. Add a scoop of your favorite flavor of sherbet for a fun treat.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
I'm not normally a fan of sour beers, but the folks at THBC have done a decent job with this blueberry concoction. The sweetness factor is definitely noticeable but not overwhelmingand the alcohol content is the same: you can taste it but it's subtle. Basically, if you're a fan of blueberry flavoring, then you'll likely dig this one.
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25
An Imperial IPA of excellent quality, this top-notch Bell's offering features citrus flavors on the palate and berry hop aromas on the nose with just a touch of bitternessbut a very healthy ABV at 9.5%. Please note that despite the high alcohol content, it is very drinkable, so don't overdo it.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A thick white head tops this IPA and stays for a long time. The scent contains a generous amount of fruity hop notes. Likewise, bitter hop flavors come through in the first tasting, with more fruity notes and bitterness present in the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs need to try this. Pair it with a wide array of foods such as fish tacos with mango salsa or goat cheese with fruit added to it.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a slightly cloudy amber-colored beer with a big ABV of 9.5%. It has a nice, sweet hops flavor that's leagues above most IPAs I've tried. For me, Bell’s can do no wrong. They always produce a quality beverage and this one is no exception.
SIERRA NEVADA COSMIC LITTLE THING DOUBLE IPA
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25
Pouring a hazy straw color, this Hazy IPA has a distinct citrus nose. On the palate the grapefruit is most prominent with some bitterness. Slightly malty/sweet, with a pleasing finish, this is a fine example of a Hazy Double IPA.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head rests on this Hazy IPA and never totally dissipates. Scents of citrus and pine from the hops dominate the nose. The citrus fruit flavors coat the tongue first when drinking the beer, with pine notes coming during the extended finish. Drinkers who enjoy
IPAs need to give this beer a shot. Pair it with a variety of foods like brisket, grilled lamb, blue cheese, carrot cake or crème brulee.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This is a hazy amber-colored beer with a nice 8.5% ABV. It's very smooth for a Double IPA. Usually they're a little bitter and a bit meatier but I really like this one. It's not as hoppy as others and sweeter than what I had expected. I usually like most Sierra Nevada offerings and this is another winner.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: Indiana recently allowed cameras in the courtroom for a murder trial, a first for the state. What is your view on cameras in the courtroom - do they promote transparency or serve as a hindrance?
A:The decision of whether to allow cameras in a courtroom for trial involves many different factors. The factors for consideration often are competing. In other words, does the need for privacy outweigh the public’s right to know?
Increasingly, our society has little to no privacy because technology allows for us to gather information and analyze the information like never before. So, our judicial system will have to evolve and balance the competing considerations of
privacy and transparency, i.e., the public’s right to know.
Let’s take a look at a hypothetical scenario. Assume a criminal trial is set and the Judge must decide whether to allow cameras in the courtroom. This particular hypothetical criminal case involves an alleged gang member who allegedly raped a child. There certainly would be privacy concerns here. First, there would be privacy concerns for the alleged child victim. Also, the jurors’ identities may need to be protected as well for fear of retaliation from alleged gang

members. As a judge these concerns may be difficult to address and monitor during a trial which is recorded or even livestreamed with cameras.
Normally, a civil trial will not have the same heightened concerns for privacy but there can still be privacy considerations.
So, my view on cameras in the courtroom for trials may vary based upon the unique circumstances presented by each trial.
