Greenroom Chat with Tom Segura

Fresh from shooting a new television project, comedy superstar Tom Segura will be performing at the Ford Center on February 27. News 4U’s comedy guru, Danny Browning, caught up with him to discuss his upcoming performance, the joys of performing in Spanish, and the importance of mozzarella sticks.

Q: You’ll be back in Evansville on February 27. What can your fans expect from this time around?

Tom:

Well, I’ve been on tour with this new hour for a year now, so it’s now really at a place where I’m excited and happy to be in a groove on tour. I’ve been tweaking it for about a year, and it’s come together nicely. It’s an hour that has a bunch of stories and jokes, mostly about observations and things that are going on in my life at the time.

Q: As a comedian myself I’m very interested in this. You said you’ve been doing this new hour for about a year. Is that how long it took you to compile this material, or just polish it?

Tom:

I think it took me about 6 months to develop and build it, but once you take it on the road, that’s really just the initial phase, and it’s definitely not where it needs to be. So, the next year is more about tweaking and polishing. Then, of course, there’s the inevitable process of dropping some things and replacing

them with new material. So, it looks a bit different than it did a year ago, and I think that’ll continue throughout this year. The stuff that really works will stay, the stuff that can be polished will get polished, and then, inevitably, you’ll get tired of certain bits, drop them, and replace them with something new.

Q. I spoke with Dusty Slay about a similar topic, and I’m amazed at how comedians like you generate so much material. Between perfecting a new hour of comedy, hosting a daily podcast, writing a book, and managing family life, what’s the secret? What’s the formula? How do you balance it all and still achieve success?

Tom:

That’s a great question. The challenge/key is managing your time and learning to say no to things that don’t align with what’s important or inspiring to you. For example, I recently shot a TV show, which wrapped last month and is now in post-production. That was something I really wanted to do, so I had to say no to almost everything else for about eight weeks. I moved stand-up shows and paused the podcast because there’s only so much you can take on at once. It’s all about balance and prioritizing. For me, being home is also a big priority, so I chose to shoot the show in Austin instead of relocating to Atlanta for eight weeks. Ultimately, you have to figure out what matters most to you and shape your life around those priorities.

Q. As many comedians do, you held day jobs, some related to show business. Did those jobs inspire your comedy, or were they simply a means to get by?

Tom:

Those jobs were really just a way to get by. I could have pursued better positions, but that might have led me down a different career path, which I didn’t want. Jobs like those often exist in tiers—if you work at a pizza shop, for example, it’s understood that it’s not your life’s passion, and you’re using it to get through a particular phase. Employers know you may not value it like you would a career position.

I always treated those jobs with respect, whether it was logging at a post-production house for reality shows or something else. But I made it clear, to myself and them, that my stand-up career was the priority. Most of my employers understood that because I worked hard, showed up on time, and did a good job. In return, they were usually supportive when I needed flexibility, like leaving early for a gig. I’d make up for it by offering to work weekends, and they’d often accommodate me. Those jobs helped me prioritize what was important while teaching me the value of relationships. Even in standup, which might not seem like it relies on relationships, it absolutely does. You have to learn how to work with agents, managers, and producers, and the jobs I had before stand-up taught me how to develop and maintain those connections.

Q. I read your book, I’d Like to Play Alone, Please, and loved it. How does the process of writing a book compare to crafting stand-up material?

Tom:

The cool thing about writing a book is that it’s a very different process - you sit down to write, and some days you’re staring at the page with only three sentences after an hour. On other days, you crank out nine pages in 15 minutes. It’s a hot-and-cold process, similar to stand-up in some ways.

The exciting part of writing a book, especially if you have a good publisher, is working with a great editor. In my case, my editor provided amazing notessuggestions on shaping a chapter, making a story more engaging, or adding humor where needed. It was like having a guide to help refine the material, which you don’t really get in stand-up. Your audience is your editor in comedy, and their feedback is immediate. If a joke doesn’t land, you know it right away.

Writing a book, though, is a ton of work. It’s rewarding, but a much more involved and structured process compared to crafting stand-up material.

Q. Let’s talk podcasting. You cohost Your Mom’s House with your wife. How do you balance professional collaboration with your personal relationship, and how do they influence each other?

Tom:

We’re fortunate that we’ve been doing the podcast together for 15 years, so it feels completely natural at this point. One key to balancing it is that we spend plenty of time apart doing our own things. When I get back from the road and we record the next day,

we’re usually excited because the podcast has always been a fun escape for us. It’s a place where we can just be silly and unfiltered, so it never feels like work. In a way, it’s like catching up—we’ll have goofy conversations in real life and think, “We should talk about this on the podcast.” It’s always felt like a release, and to me, Your Mom’s House is the most fun podcast experience I’ve ever had.

Q. You’re fluent in Spanish and have mentioned plans for a Spanish-language special. How does performing comedy in a different language affect your delivery and connection with the audience?

Tom:

It’s definitely challenging, even though I’ve spoken Spanish my whole life. English is my more fluent language, so while casual conversations—like ordering coffee—feel natural, performing comedy in Spanish requires a whole new level of focus and preparation.

Interestingly, my delivery didn’t really change. My Spanish-speaking comedian friends told me, “You sound exactly like you, just in Spanish,” which was reassuring. It worked well with audiences, but I had a lot of insecurities about not being perfect like worrying about grammatical mistakes.

What I learned, though, is that the audience doesn’t care. They appreciate the effort and love that you’re doing it.

Q. When you get those laughs, does it feel the same as a regular show, or does it feel extra special because you worked harder on it?

Tom:

I think you do feel a little extra special especially if you get like a real pop, like if

something really pops off …yeah it's it is a thrill. I mean it's a real thrill.

Q. Reflecting on your journey from your early days to breaking through as a prominent comedian, what personal or professional growth are you most proud of, and what goals do you still aspire to achieve?

Tom:

It all comes down to committing fully to what I wanted to do. When I look back on my career, the biggest lesson was learning to be unwavering. I refused to take no for an answer and decided that this was my life, and this was what I was going to do. I’m proud that I stuck with it, even during the times when it felt like things weren’t going anywhere. There were plenty of moments where I could have doubted myself, but I kept going because I loved it and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Q. That’s a wonderful answer. Final question: If aliens visited Earth for the first time and you had to perform for them, what would be your opening joke?

Tom:

That’s a great question. I’m not sure what I’d open with, but I think I’d start by offering them some food. I don’t know what alien cuisine is like, but every comedy club is known for serving wings and beer, so I’d lean into that. Maybe some mozzarella sticks, to give them a real taste of Earth.

I would try to get them into the mindset that this is what it's like to be here. Why don’t you guys chow down a little bit and then we'll start the show and maybe we can convert them into obese earthlings.

THERE WERE PLENTY OF MOMENTS WHERE I COULD HAVE DOUBTED MYSELF, BUT I KEPT GOING BECAUSE I LOVED IT AND COULDN’T IMAGINE DOING ANYTHING ELSE.

WINTER CONCERT & EVENT

& EVENT GUIDE

THE HISTORY OF Day Valentine's

Love is in the air! February 14th is extremely special because we get to celebrate how much we adore each other. Like many other holidays we celebrate, Valentines Day is celebrated through familiar customs and symbolic rituals. Rooted in religious history (and pre-religious history), many of our favorite Valentine’s Day traditions originated from less than romantic customs and events (beheadings and sacrifices…) Read along as we dive headfirst into the history of Valentines Day!

Valentines Day, celebrated on February 14, has origins that date back to ancient Roman times, though its exact history is shrouded in mystery. The day is often linked to St. Valentine, a Christian martyr who was executed by beheading in 269 AD for defying Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriages for soldiers. Legend says he secretly performed weddings for couples, earning him recognition as the patron saint of lovers. The date “February 14” is believed to be chosen by the church in an attempt to Christianize the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia.

The pagan festival of Lupercalia was a fertility festival celebrated around February 15th. The festival was dedicated to the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus. The festival was also dedicated to the founders of Rome: Romulus and Remus. Members of the Luperci, which is an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the founders of Rome were cared for as infants by a she-wolf, or lupa. The festival would begin with a goat sacrifice

for fertility, then a dog sacrifice directly after for purification. Priests would then dip the goats hide in blood, and gently slap women, and the crop fields with the hide.

Roman women didn’t mind the touch of the hides on their bodies, because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. According to legend, in the evening women would write down their names and place them into an urn. The bachelors of the city would then choose a name from the urn and become paired for the year with the woman. Many times, the randomly chosen duo would later marry.

The Lupercalia festival initially withstood the Christianization but was later outlawed in the 5th century. Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as Valentines Day in 496

A.D. Over time, the day evolved from its religious roots into a celebration of romantic love, especially after it became associated with the medieval tradition of courtly love. During the Middle Ages in France and England it was said the beginning of mating season for birds was around February 14th, which also added to the belief that Valentines Day should be a day of celebrating love.

Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet was the first to record St. Valentines day as a day to celebrate romance. In his 1375 poem “parliament of Fouls” he wrote “For this was sent on Sayent Valentines day / Whan every soul cometh there to choose his mate”. Valentines’ greetings were known to be said verbally as far back as

the Middle Ages, but written valentines didn’t begin to appear until after 1400.

There are so many interesting aspects regarding the history of the well-known holiday dedicated to love and romance. With so much love all around us, it’s bound to get you in the spirit. Weather you have a romantic interest, or just bask in the love from your family, and friends, I hope you all feel cherished on February 14th. Happy Valentine's Day!

Fun Fact: The use of "X" to represent a kiss has its roots in medieval times. During this period, many people were illiterate and could not sign their names, so they would mark documents with an "X" as a substitute for their signature. The person would then kiss the "X" to signify their promise or oath. Over time, this symbol became associated with affection and love, and its use evolved into a shorthand for a kiss in written correspondence, especially in letters or cards.

Evansville’s Lapidary Society Currents

with Aimee Blume

We have a hidden gem shop where you’ll find some of the most unique, 100% made-fromscratch jewelry in Evansville – handcrafted all the way down to stones cut, shaped, and sometimes even collected by the artist.

It’s not a jewelry store, a boutique gift shop, or even a museum gift shop.

It’s the Evansville Lapidary Society.

“The definition of ‘lapidary’ is the art of cutting and polishing semi-precious minerals and gemstones,” explained Andrew Roques, the 2025 Lapidary Society president.

Creative people who love working with gems and minerals often enjoy making jewelry, and many Lapidary Society members meticulously craft stunning rings, pendants, and bracelets out of stones they’ve shaped themselves, using techniques of wire-wrapping, silver smithing and others. Many of these pieces are then sold to fund the club.

During the summer months, the Lapidary Society has a booth at the Franklin Street Bazaar, but if you’re looking for a singular jewelry gift for your Valentine, you may stop by the Society’s building on Willow Road during open hours to shop.

On a recent visit, we browsed through hundreds of pieces of jewelry. We found traditional turquoise and silver rings and bracelets; pretty, feminine pendants of gems and crystal set in silver wire; unique pieces made from bone and fossils found by the artist; earrings of crystal points; even a scorpion sculpted of black gemstones and copper wire. If you have an interest in particular crystals or gemstones, you’re sure to find an example – the variety of stones and colors seems never-ending.

The prices for these all-handmade pieces are surprisingly low. Most wire-wrapped necklaces range from $30-$50, with larger and more intricate pieces going up in price based on the time it takes to fashion them. Sterling silver pieces cost more, averaging from $75 to over $100.

Liz Ertle, the Society’s social media coordinator, is also one of the most productive wire wrappers in the group.

Wire wrapped pendants made of semi-precious gems and minerals such as cat's eye and agate rest in a case at the Evansville Lapidary Society.
Lapidary Society Jeanne McCormick shapes a cabochon out of petrified wood at the Evansville Lapidary Society on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2024.

“I usually use copper or stainless-steel wire,” she said. “For the most part, the jewelry here is made with natural stones, but occasionally glass or interesting man-made gems are used also. We make things that are basic or fancy. You can get a simple beautiful stone with a single wire wrapped about it, to something that’s very big and elaborate that takes days to make.”

Katie Phelps, the group’s 2025 treasurer, especially likes finding her own materials.

“I like to know where the minerals come from,” she said. “The different parts of the earth that create them. Sometimes we take field trips, and I like to hunt for geodes. I’ve been to mine quartz, emerald, and garnets.”

If you’d like something shiny that’s not jewelry, you’ll also find crystals and gemstones in their natural raw forms, polished, and faceted or cut into other shapes. There are polished stone sculptures, crystal balls, petrified wood, fossils, inlaid boxes, and an endless assortment of curiosities.

Purchasing gifts from the Lapidary Society is not only economical, but it supports a good cause. The club was established in 1953. At that time, according to Roques, most lapidary artists

owned their own equipment and worked from home. When a member donated the building in the early 1990’s, the organization was able to establish a communal workspace, which enabled members to learn and practice without needing to invest in their own workshops.

Prospective members even now are given three visits to the shop, where they’ll be taught to use the equipment safely and make a stone cabochon before officially joining and paying the $35 annual dues. Classes in wire wrapping, field trips and other educational opportunities are offered regularly.

THE LUNCHBOX

The Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center is a beautiful campus located just east of Highway 41, at 1901 Lynch Road. It’s a career and technical school that offers a plethora of learning opportunities for local high school students. The SICTC opened in 2006 and has since been named one of the top 5 schools of its type in the US. Students from five surrounding counties have access to over 22 different programs and 10 courses of hands-on study in subjects ranging from veterinary sciences, criminal justice, manufacturing & welding, auto collision repair, business marketing, graphic design, broadcasting, health sciences and more. And last but not least - culinary arts. Which brings us to “The Lunchbox.”

The Lunchbox isn’t a restaurant. It’s a part of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation culinary program, and one of the best places in town to grab a value packed lunch. It’s a true local hidden gem.

Headed by Chef Sam Wagoner, local high school students study from a textbook in a classroom setting and also enjoy handson real-world experience in food service. The course studies range from food safety and creating recipes, to nutrition, food presentation & garnishment, calculating food costs and menu pricing, learning tools, equipment and cooking techniques, washing dishes, doing laundry, and even customer service. They learn how to run a kitchen and work together to create a great experience by preparing and serving lunch to the public 3-days a week. Students could go from this program directly into a career, although many choose to continue with higher education. But either way, their hands-on training will set them up for some varied and amazing career options.

The culinary program itself has been around since the early-1980's, initially being offered only at Bosse High School. In fact, Chef Sam himself is a previous graduate. After the new facility was built

in 2006 by the EVSC, Chef Sam was given the opportunity to lead the program. He relates, “I knew back when I was in high school that I would eventually want to teach this class, so my senior year I told Chef Ed (the previous culinary arts teacher), “hey when you’re ready to retire let me know because I want this job.”

Each week the new menu is posted on both the SICTC website and Facebook page. EVANSVILLE of A TASTE

MONTHLY FOOD REVIEW WITH BRIAN BUXTON

DEERHEAD TAVERN

A long history and a large dose of longevity is necessary for a restaurant to be considered a local institution. But if you were making a list for Evansville, the Deerhead Tavern would certainly be on it. Known for years as the place to listen to live Blues on Sunday nights, it is also one of the best places to celebrate Mardi Gras. The Deerhead has played a part in the lives of many loyal patrons over the years, your author included. Live music there always had a heavy focus on jazz and blues, with the Amazing Soul Crackers enjoying a 16+ year run. The only Sunday they ever missed was if it fell on Christmas.

The Deerhead is rich with local history (check out the photos in the bar when you visit), and although it should qualify as a dive bar, the ambiance imparts more of a reverent feeling. The character of the building, the dark woods, the gorgeous bar, and familiar staff (more on those later), and the consistently excellent food gives it more of a homey feel.

Built in 1885 by John Willem, it was originally operated as a grocery / general store. In the 1920's it was a pool hall, and for some of the

'30's the Columbia Restaurant. It has also housed a package liquor store and during Prohibition was advertised as a "soft drink shop." But it's mostly been a tavern over its 140 years. Some of its iterations have been Jochim’s, Badley’s, Bieder’s, the J&N Tavern, and Bullocks. In July of 1982 Dan Kollker and family purchased it as Bullocks, renovated the property and changed the name to the Deerhead. Since then it has always been a bar with a pizza-centric menu, but with a Greek influence to some dishes. And although Dan Kollker also owned Knob Hill at the same time (he and son Karson are still the proprietors there today), the menus remained unique.

Any dishes that appeared on both menus had very distinct flavors. In 2003 Chuck Johnson took over stewardship of the building and can still be found working there almost every day. The décor, ambiance and menu have always remained familiar to the regulars.

The interior is very casual but comfortable and inviting, and the centerpiece is a gorgeous and very rare mahogany bar - an 1893 Brunswick from the old Kum Back Tavern on Columbia at Division and 41. An aside: the only other spots in town with

Brunswick bars are Horstketter’s and the Hilltop Inn. There's even a vintage Perlick Brass walk-in cooler that still cools the beer! (Perlick was founded in 1917, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.)

The menu offers a great variety, from red beans and rice (you’ll want to add a pork steak), a prime rib sandwich with au jus dipping sauce, polish sausage with sauerkraut, a Reuben, hot ham & cheese, German Bologna, a Stromboli, and of course pizza! There are 10 gourmet pizzas to choose from, or you can build your own from a variety of ingredients, including anchovies! I think they are one of the top 3 square cut tavern style pizzas in town, and they also offer their famous “double decker” which is two thin crust pizzas stacked on top of the other.

Although I do enjoy variety, my go-to orders are always a Big Buck Classic pizza, a Greek salad with black olives, purple onion, feta cheese, tomatoes, green peppers with mint dressing, or a Reuben. Obviously not all at

their home-made vegetable soup, which brings back memories of my childhood as it tastes the same as what my grandmother used to make. I have been enjoying Deerhead for years and it always taste the same. Complete consistency. Bartender Jeff Joynt has been a fixture behind the bar for over 35 years and makes a fantastic Bloody Mary! During Mardi Gras (which is March 4th this year), you’ll want to stop by for some Red beans and rice, Jambalaya, Seafood gumbo, Cajun chicken bites & more!!

Their hours of operation are MondayThursday: 11am - 9pm and Friday & Saturday: 11am - 10pm, closed Sundays. Parking is available in a private lot as well as on the street. There is a family room, a cozy private room, and an enclosed outdoor patio. You can contact the restaurant by calling the number below, or on Facebook @deerheadevansville

ANYTHING ON WHEELS

TOM LEGGETT

SO YOU WANT TO START A FOOD TRUCK?

Th is month’s issue of Anything on Wheels dives into the attractive yet challenging world of food trucks. Running the Evansville Food Truck page has given me a front-row seat to witness

The Basics: What It Takes to Succeed

Consistent Product Quality

At the heart of every successfu l food truck is a consistent and high-quality product. Customers should trust your truck to deliver their favorite dishes every time. Whether you’re serving tacos, gourmet grilled cheese, or decadent desserts, your menu should showcase what you do best. Experimentation is great during development, but once you launch, consistency is king. That said, don’t hesitate to introduce occasional specials to keep things exciting.

Punctuality and Reliability

Your customers and partners need to trust you’ll stick to your schedule. Food festivals, private events, and regular stops all demand punctuality. Missing dates or showing up late is a surefire way to lose credibility. Trust me, I’ve seen the Evansville Food Truck page light up with complaints over this issue. Build a reputation for reliability by committing to your schedule and always showing up prepared.

Focus

Trying to be everything to everyone often leads to mediocrity. The most successful food trucks find their niche and excel in it. Instead of offering a sprawling menu, focus on a few signature items that you can execute flawlessly. Remember the term KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid!

the ingredients for success—and the pitfalls to avoid. Starting a food truck is a journey fueled by passion and persistence, not for the faint of heart. Let’s explore what it takes to launch a thriving food truck business.

Common Mistakes: What to Avoid Underestimating Costs

Starting a food truck may seem like a budget-friendly alternative to opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant, but it’s far from cheap. Licensing, equipment, fuel, insurance, certifications, and maintenance costs add up quickly. Overestimating profit margins and underestimating expenses are common rookie mistakes.

Ignoring Branding

A great food truck is more than just good food, it’s an experience. Your branding, from the truck design to your social media presence, is crucial for attracting and retaining customers. A boring or inconsistent brand can leave your truck forgettable in a competitive market.

Skipping Market Research

Knowing your audience and competition is critical. Don’t assume your concept will succeed without understanding local tastes and preferences. Spend time analyzing your market, testing recipes, and gathering feedback before fully committing. (Pro tip: Seek opinions outside your circle of family and friends, they can be biased.)

Important Terms for Aspiring Food Truck Owners

• Commissary Kitchen: A licensed kitchen space where you can prepare food legally.

Many cities require food truck operators to use these facilities.

• POS System: A point-of-sale system essential for managing transactions and inventory efficiently.

• Event Permits: Many locations require special permits to operate at festivals, markets, and other gatherings.

• Health Inspection: Regular inspections ensure your truck meets local health and safety standards. Your first step should be the Health Department to get a packet outlining the requirements for operating legally and safely.

A Nuanced Business

Food trucking is as much about logistics and strategy as it is about cooking. From securing the right permits to choosing profitable locations, success lies in managing the details. At its core, however, the magic of a food truck is in the joy it brings to customers. With passion, planning, and perseverance, you can turn your dream of running a food truck into a thriving business.

See you down the road.

KUNG PAO CHICKEN

As we get settled into the new year, many people find themselves setting resolutions aimed at improving their health and well-being. One of the most common resolutions is to lose weight and adopt healthier eating habits. While this goal can seem daunting, especially after the indulgence of the holiday season, one effective strategy to achieve weight loss is through meal preparation and planning.

Meal prep involves preparing meals or ingredients in advance, saving time, and promoting healthier choices throughout the week. By planning ahead, individuals can ensure that they have nutritious options readily available, reducing the temptation to make unhealthy food choices on a whim. Moreover, meal prep allows for better portion control and helps individuals stay on track with their dietary goals.

One popular approach to weight loss through meal preparation is following a low carb diet. Low carb diets have been shown to be effective for weight loss and can also provide other health benefits, such as improved blood sugar control and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Incorporating flavorful and satisfying dishes into a low

carb meal plan can make the weight loss journey more enjoyable and sustainable.

One delicious and healthy low carb recipe that can be a part of a New Year’s weight loss meal plan is Kung Pao Chicken. This Chinese inspired dish is packed with protein and flavor, making it a perfect option for those looking to eat well while still enjoying their meals. Pairing the Kung Pao Chicken with a fresh salad creates a balanced and satisfying meal that will undoubtedly be better than your neighbors!

Ingredients

• 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite size pieces

• 2 tbsp soy sauce

• 1 tbsp rice vinegar

• 1 tbsp sesame oil

• 1 tbsp peanut oil

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 inch piece of ginger, grated

• ½ cup unsalted peanuts

• ½ cup chopped green onion

• ¼ cup chicken broth

• 1 tsp red pepper flakes, adjust to taste

• 1 tbsp of sweetener, monk fruit or any sweetener you prefer

• Salt and pepper to taste

In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Add chicken pieces and marinate for at least 30 minutes.

In a large skillet, heat the peanut oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, ginger, and peanuts and sauté until fragrant.

Add the marinated chicken to the skillet and cook until browned and cooked through.

Stir in the green onions, chicken broth, red pepper flakes and sweetener. Cook for a few more minutes until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve the Kung Pao Chicken hot with a fresh side salad.

I hope this helps kickstart your New Year’s resolution into a healthy 2025. Enjoy!

Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure

I have been hooked on sourdough ever since I received my first sourdough starter and made my first loaf. I make a variety of sourdough goodies each week. I love a good scone, and I recently came across a recipe that said they were no roll scones. Yes, please! I made a lemon blueberry recipe on Christmas day. They were insanely simple and a huge hit! I knew I could take this base and make another yummy version. Orange and chocolate work so well together and were the perfect combination for these scones!

CLEAN BITE life

SOURDOUGH ORANGE CHOCOLATE CHIP SCONES

SERVING SIZE: 8 SCONES

Dry Ingredients:

• 250 g. (2 cups) all purpose flour

• 10 g. (1 T.) baking powder

• ½ tsp. salt

• 100 g. (1/2 cup) granulated sugar

• 170 g. (12 T.) salted butter, very cold, cut into cubes (KerryGold)

Directions:

Wet Ingredients:

• 1 large egg

• 50 g. (about ¼ cup) sourdough starter (active or discard)

• 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

• ¼ cup of heavy cream

• Zest of one large orange

• ½ - ¾ cup of mini chocolate chips

1. Preheat your oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.

2. In the bowl of a food processor: add the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Pulse just a few times to combine.

3. Add the butter. In short bursts, pulse 3-5 times. The mixture should look sandy and crumbly, with some large chunks of butter throughout.

4. In a large bowl: whisk the egg, sourdough starter, vanilla extract, heavy cream, and orange zest together.

5. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl with the wet ingredients. Mix gently with a rubber spatula to combine.

6. Fold in the chocolate chips. If the mixture seems dry, add a drizzle of heavy cream. The dough should easily stick when pinched together with your fingertips. Bring the dough together in a large mound.

7. Using a ½ cup, portion the dough onto your lined baking sheet, keeping them rounded for added height when baked. (Note: At this point, you can cover tightly with plastic wrap and chill overnight for maximum fermentation. Or jump to the next step to bake right away.)

8. Bake on the center rack for 20-22+ minutes or until golden and set in the center when poked.

9. Cool on the pan for 1-2 minutes; then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling completely. Enjoy!

Every fiber of my being is threaded by music and writing. This column you're reading was conceived as a means to explore the local preforming arts scene, and those who know me will expect it to somehow be related to songs if not specifically guitar. But SURPRISE! The same human connection and exhilaration I feel for playing music, I also feel about watching magic. After a conversation with Lewis Chaney, a professional magician and member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) Ring 56, I’m convinced that magic holds an equally transformative power.

Magic is all about creating wonder and surprise but can also touch on deep emotions. “Magic creates awe, and when you’re in awe, you feel lifted up emotionally. You’re kinder, happier, and more connected to those around you,” Lewis said. This, he believes, is the heart of what magicians do: bringing joy and wonder to others.

Lewis Chaney has blended magic with his work as a professional speaker, creating a program called “Beyond the Wand.” This initiative explores the profound impact that

magic—both performing and watching—can have on health and well-being. Backed by empirical research, Lewis shared a study where seniors with mild cognitive impairment participated in a six-week magic program. Their cognitive skills improved significantly, likely due to the creative engagement and problem-solving required in learning magic. As Lewis explained, “Magicians have to stay sharp because we’re constantly creating, performing, and pushing our minds to new limits.” This creative process and cleverness are not unlike the elements of songwriting with the result hopefully being an audience moved and united.

The IBM Ring 56 in Henderson, Kentucky, is a community of magicians dedicated to sharing this wonder. Established in 1946, the ring includes members from all walks of life, including Norris Priest, their longest-standing member at 90 years old. The group meets regularly, providing a supportive environment where magicians can practice, learn, and grow. “If someone’s going to make mistakes, this is the place to do it,” Lewis said. “We’re all here to guide and encourage each other.”

For Lewis, mentorship is vital. “If I see a kid interested in magic, I’ll teach them something,” he shared. “The next generation has to come from somewhere. Magic isn’t just about learning tricks to fool people; it’s about storytelling and entertaining. That’s a much bigger package.” This dedication to fostering young talent ensures that the art form thrives for years to come.

Breaking the stereotype that magic is just for kids is a mission Lewis embraces wholeheartedly. “People think magic is rabbits in hats, but it’s so much more,” he said. He recounted a story of performing at a 40th birthday party. The birthday man initially felt embarrassed, worried that a magician wouldn’t fit the tone of the event. But after Lewis performed for the guests, the man admitted,

“You’re not what I expected.” Magic, as Lewis demonstrated, isn’t limited to children’s parties; it can elevate any occasion where you want to create an unforgettable experience.

For anyone curious about exploring magic, Lewis extends an open invitation to visit IBM Ring 56. “Contact us at ring56.com,” he said. “You can visit us for free a couple of times, but after that, you’ll need to join to protect the secrets of the craft.” Lewis and fellow magician Joseph Franklin perform regularly at Turoni’s in Evansville and Newburgh Indiana, on Fridays and Saturdays, providing a one-of-akind experience there.

Magic, like music, has a universal ability to bridge gaps and create moments of connection. Whether it’s through the awe of a trick well performed or the camaraderie of a shared secret, magic uplifts and inspires. As Lewis Chaney and the members of IBM Ring 56 prove, it’s not just about illusions—it’s about creating lasting memories. So, why not add a little magic to your life? Whether you attend a performance, join a magic ring, or hire a magician for your next event, you just might find yourself amazed.

Thank you for any and all support you give to the Independent artists of the world!- Lindsey Williams

COMEDY & CURIOSITIES

WITH DANNY BROWNING

Cupid is the worst. (Except when he’s not.)

Every year, as soon as the leftover Christmas crap goes on clearance, store shelves are overrun with heart-shaped everything. These trinkets and treats are designed to prove to our loved ones just how much we care about them. Because, apparently, the coffee maker I got her for Christmas less than 2 months ago didn’t quite say “I love you” loud enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Valentine’s Day. Sure, it’s a manufactured holiday designed to pad the profits of greeting card and candy companies, but I appreciate having a day dedicated to loving and honoring the people that we love and honor. My problem is with the mascot. A flying baby armed with a bow and heart-tipped arrows that force people to fall in love. His aim is questionable at best, and he has way too much freedom. His mother, Venus, the goddess of love, apparently finds this adorable because, hey, love is great, right? It’s basically the Roman god equivalent of “those people” you see causing chaos at Walmart.

The commercialization of Valentine’s Day is the worst. Everywhere you look, it’s pink and purple everything—chocolates, cards, and jewelry commercials that make you feel like a monster if you don’t spend three months’ salary. Every other ad on the radio

is a diamond company offering “special deals” on overpriced rings. And for the younger generation, it’s endless rows of Squishmallows and stuffed animals. Who even has room for those? They don’t say “romantic.” They say, “I panicked at Walgreens.”

But let’s give credit where credit is due: Valentine’s Day gets one thing right— chocolate. Sweet, glorious chocolate. Forget Cupid, overpriced bouquets, and those $8 glitter-bomb cards. Chocolate is the real hero of this holiday. It’s the one thing that never lets us down. Whether it’s truffles, chocolate-covered strawberries, or melted chocolate drizzled over your partner’s naked body, it’s the necessity we need—not just on Valentine’s Day, but all month long.

So, this year, let’s rethink Valentine’s Day. Skip the overpriced gestures and the pressure to be romantic on demand. Instead, grab a box of chocolates, put on your comfiest pants, and enjoy a night in with the people—or snacks—you truly love.

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my Valentine. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a lovely woman in my life who keeps me sane and happy. Pam, I appreciate you and I love you. Even though we’ll be apart this Valentine’s Day, my heart is always yours.

And if you’re single, treat yourself. Chocolate doesn’t judge. It doesn’t need love arrows or grand declarations. It’s just there for you—steady, reliable, like Cupid’s absentee mother should’ve been.

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE

THE VANISHING OF TRACY

OCASIO: A 13-YEAR SEARCH FOR ANSWERS WITH AMELIA ADKINS

The last time anyone saw Tracy Ocasio, it was May 26, 2009, when she left the Florida Tap Room in Ocoee after watching the Orlando Magic play the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 27-year-old was supposed to head home, but she never made it. Her yellow Chevrolet Cobalt was found abandoned the next morning just a few hundred yards from the home of James Hataway, the last person seen with her that night. Since then, Tracy’s case has remained unsolved, despite years of investigation and the chilling connections that have emerged.

The Night She Disappeared

Tracy’s night started like any other. She was at her favorite bar in Ocoee, cheering on the Magic. After the game, she left the bar with Hataway, a local resident she had met that night. What happened after that remains a mystery. Her car was discovered abandoned the next morning, and when her parents couldn’t reach her, they immediately reported her missing. The car’s front seats were pushed all the way forward, a detail that struck her mother, Elizabeth, as odd.

Police quickly reviewed bar surveillance footage and saw Tracy leaving with Hataway. Investigators began to piece together a timeline. Hataway claimed that Tracy came by for a little while and then left…alive! Despite his story, the location of her car so close to Hataway’s home raised suspicions.

Hataway: The Key Suspect

Ocoee Police Detective David Gray made it clear early on— Hataway was the only suspect in Tracy’s disappearance. Hataway, who was later convicted for a violent attack on another woman, Rachel Clarke, in 2008, was brought in for questioning. His story about Tracy leaving around 2 a.m. seemed inconsistent, especially when cellphone data showed he was still near his home hours later.

A polygraph test taken during a later interrogation showed Hataway was lying, but without concrete evidence, the police couldn’t charge him. Investigators also looked at Hataway’s past and found disturbing connections to other incidents. Just days after Tracy’s disappearance, Elizabeth Ocasio received a letter from the State Attorney’s Office informing her that Tracy had filed a battery charge against a man named Paul Hutto. Hutto had been involved in a confrontation with Tracy outside a bar, but police found no direct link between him and her disappearance.

Rachel Clarke’s Horrifying Story

While investigating Hataway, detectives caught a break. Rachel Clarke, a woman who had survived a brutal attack by Hataway a year earlier, came forward. Her story mirrored Tracy’s—she had given Hataway a ride, only for him to attack her in a similar fashion, choking her and threatening to kill her. Clarke’s testimony was a chilling echo of what might have happened to Tracy.

The connection was too strong to ignore. Hataway was charged with attempted murder in Clarke’s case, and his violent history made him the prime suspect in Tracy’s disappearance. Despite this, Tracy’s body was never found, and investigators continued to search for clues.

The Search for Tracy

Weeks turned into months, and the investigation dragged on. The police launched massive searches involving K-9 units, divers, and even aerial teams, scouring the Florida swamps and woods for any sign of Tracy. In late June, a possible lead emerged when a Disney World employee reported seeing Tracy’s car parked suspiciously near a rural area. A search of the area turned up nothing, but just days later, a startling discovery was made.

A woman’s black boot, like one Tracy often wore, was found in a wooded area near Hataway’s property. Tracy’s family was called in to identify the shoe, and both her father and friend confirmed it looked like one of her favorites. But there was no other evidence to indicate Tracy’s fate, and the case went cold.

The Long Wait for Justice

Despite the unanswered questions and no closure, the Ocasios never gave up hope. Hataway was eventually convicted of attempted murder in the assault on Rachel Clarke and sentenced to life in prison. But Tracy’s disappearance remains unsolved, with detectives still working the case in the hope that new evidence will emerge.

Ocoee Police Chief Saima Plasencia has stated that no victim is ever forgotten, and the department continues to keep Tracy’s case alive. As time passes, her family clings to the hope that one day, someone will come forward with the key to solving her disappearance. Until then, Tracy’s story serves as a painful reminder of how even the most ordinary nights can change everything and sometimes justice takes its sweet time.

I’ve always been a bit of a product snob when it comes to what I put on my skin and hair. I love trying new products and I used to enjoy perusing the drugstore shelves looking for the newest and best potions. The more knowledgeable I became, the more I’ve stayed away from items you can grab off the shelf. Becoming more choosey about the ingredients I allow onto my skin, which, unfortunately excludes much of what you can pick up at CVS, I’ve had to order specialty skincare lines that come with a higher price tag. The downside, I don’t get to see it and touch it before I spend the money. We’ve all been there, sifting through endless beauty products that promise the world and somehow leave us disappointed.

SIXTH + ZERO: MY NEW FAVORITE CLEAN SKINCARE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS WITH AMY BRADFORD

That’s why I’m so excited to talk about my experience with Sixth + Zero, a LOCAL clean skincare brand that totally lives up to the hype. You can visit their gorgeous shop in downtown Evansville, browse the beautifully packaged items, and touch/ smell the products in person. They’ve nailed the perfect balance of nourishing your skin, being eco-friendly, and offering a little luxury that doesn’t break the bank. After trying their products, I’m hooked.

A Little About Sixth + Zero

Sixth + Zero started in Evansville, IN, as Sixth Street Soapery, where the goal was simple: create natural, pure skincare that helps you feel good about what you're putting on your skin. Sounds like

something I can get behind! Over time, the brand grew and expanded its focus to sustainability, adding "ZERO" to the name as a nod to their commitment to reducing waste. Their “zero-ish” approach is all about taking small steps toward living more sustainably—because it’s really about progress, not perfection.

The story behind Sixth + Zero is also pretty cool. Founder Mary Allen got started with soap-making as part of a chemistry project for her daughter, and they both fell in love with the craft. That turned into a passion for making clean skincare that’s just as good for your skin as it is for the planet. Mary’s now an Advanced Certified Soap Maker and has been a member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetics Guild for over 10 years. With every product, she focuses on using simple, thoughtful ingredients that work wonders without all the extra stuff. Sixth + Zero is all about self-care that’s gentle on your skin and kind to the Earth.

And, it would be remiss of me to not mention their absolutely beautiful shop. If you're in the Evansville area, be sure to stop by Sixth + Zero's stunning location at 425 Main St. The space is as thoughtfully designed as their products, offering a cozy and welcoming vibe where you can explore their clean skincare offerings in person.

Now, the really good stuff… I tried and reviewed several products from Sixth + Zero and here is my take on a few of my favorites:

Oil Cleanser: If you’re on the hunt for a cleanser that actually works without drying out your skin, Oil Cleanser is where it’s at. It’s oil-based, which might sound a little intimidating if you’ve never used one before, but trust me—it’s a game changer. This is my first go at it as well, and I texted the owner, Mary, after 3 days of using it and let her know I will never live without it. It’s got a mix of organic jojoba oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, hibiscus oil, and MCT oil, which all work together to remove makeup and impurities without stripping my skin of its natural oils. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and balanced—something I’ve never really experienced with other cleansers. If you’ve been thinking about trying oil cleansing but haven’t taken the plunge yet, Oil Cleanser is the perfect place to start. It’s gentle, effective, and just... lovely.

Face Serum: This has become an absolute staple for me. I’ve got pretty picky skin, but this stuff is so good. Pair two pumps with a spray of Hydrosol (more on that next), and smooth over your face and neck. It’s got organic jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil, argan oil, rosehip seed oil, and raspberry seed oil, which all work together to give my

skin the hydration it craves. It’s rich in all the good stuff—like antioxidants and fatty acids—but it never feels heavy or greasy. My skin just drinks it up. It doesn’t leave a sticky residue, just soft, smooth skin that’s perfectly hydrated. And the best part? The scent. Neroli and frankincense essential oils give it this calming, almost spa-like vibe that makes it feel like a little self-care ritual every time I apply it. A little goes a long way with this moisturizer—one pump covers my face, but I always make sure to treat my neck too. Don’t forget your neck, guys—it deserves love too!

Facial Hydrosol in Frankincense: I’ve been wanting to add hydrosol to my routine for a while and I doubt I will stop now that I have this in my cabinet. This certified organic frankincense hydrosol has a delicate, balsamic scent that’s calming and restorative. I love using it throughout the day as a facial spritz to boost my complexion, leaving my skin radiant and refreshed. It’s also great for meditation, creating a peaceful atmosphere, and I’ve found it helpful during cold season for soothing my throat and clearing my breath. Whether for glowing skin or a moment of calm, Hydrosol brings a touch of quiet beauty to your routine.

Ingredients That Actually Do Good for Your Skin

One of the things I love about Sixth + Zero is how much care they put into their ingredients. Everything in their products

is thoughtfully chosen to be clean and nourishing. From the jojoba oil in the cleanser to the apricot kernel oil in the moisturizer, every ingredient is there for a reason. No unnecessary chemicals, no fillers—just pure goodness for your skin. The packaging describes the products as a “ritual” and that is exactly how it feels when you use them—a self-care ritual. From the scents to the packaging, it all feels special. These products work so well together, making it super easy to create a skincare routine that’s simple, effective, and totally in tune with what your skin needs.

Final Thoughts: A Skincare Brand You Can Feel Good About

Finding a skincare brand that’s both luxurious and sustainable isn’t easy, but Sixth + Zero has nailed it. Their Oil Cleanser and Face Serum have quickly become my go-to products because they’re effective, clean, and just feel so good on my skin. Plus, knowing they’re locally made, and eco-conscious makes me feel even better about using them. There are so many more products to check out that I could not fit into this review. Go buy them!

LOCAL SPORTS SPOTLIGHT: COACH CHACE ADKINS

Coach Chace Adkins is a passionate leader in youth soccer development and the founder of Heritage Keeper Co., a personal goalkeeping academy for players aged 8-18, focusing on skills, goalkeeping IQ, and college recruitment. Currently, he serves as the Director of Goalkeeping and Academy Director for the Southwest Indiana Soccer Association (SWISA), coaching the 2013, 2014, and 2007 boys’ teams. With roots in Central Kentucky soccer, including roles with Georgetown FC and West Jessamine High School’s state-title-winning teams, Coach Adkins brings a wealth of experience as a former collegiate goalkeeper at Kentucky Christian and Marshall University to inspire and develop the next generation of talent.

Q: You coach youth soccer, specifically youth club soccer. How did you get into coaching…a life long dream?

A: No, not a lifelong dream but definitely a lifelong passion. The lifelong dream was to play professionally ,of course. I’ve always worked with kids, even when I was in my playing days. I would volunteer in high school as a rec coach and goalkeeper

coach. In college I offered goalkeeping to high school kids. Eastern Kentucky and Western Virginia didn’t have many goalkeeper specific coaches. That was something I always wanted when I was a player. When my playing career ended my senior year of college from an injury, I felt like my story wasn’t finished. My HS coach reached out to me and said that coaching was something I was born to do…and he was right. I am, by nature, a good teacher. My story didn’t end the way I envisioned back then, but through coaching I am helping write so many more for my players.

Q: It doesn’t take long to see that you seem to have a serious soft spot for this area when it comes to coaching. You come to us from KY, what is special about Evansville?

A: What is cool and special about Evansville is that there is such a contrast and variety of the type of players here. Most of the cities I’ve worked in, I’ve seen the same archetype of player over and over. But here, there is an array of technical ability and physical traits. You can be successful with just about any team in town. I mean, I took a bunch of kids who

never played club and some who never even played soccer at all and schemed up a very competitive team. Our local kids have grit and that works really well with my soccer philosophy.

Q: What makes club soccer different from recreational soccer? For those of us not in the sports world, it just sounds like dollar signs.

A: The difference between rec soccer and club soccer is the coaching and the resources. There are a lot of phenomenal parents who coach recreational soccer, and they deserve their credit for taking the time out of their schedules to foster the love of soccer in young athletes. It takes a lot of love. The big difference is in club soccer you train under a licensed and trained coach. The term “club soccer”, it seems to have a stigma attached to it. I notice this area seems to shy away from joining club soccer, thinking their player isn’t skilled enough to compete, when you won’t know how talented they are until they have the fundamentals down, and that takes time.

Q: In your opinion, what should a parent of a young soccer player be looking for? How do you pick a coach or a club?

A: Great question. My answer is you are picking the coach not the badge. The club fosters the culture for the organization, but the coach fosters your child’s growth. You need to find a coach you feel 100% confident and safe with. Someone who has a plan for the team as a whole and for your child specifically as a unique, individual player. Being “part of the team” isn’t what you are looking at, the purpose of club soccer is player development. Find somewhere that is coaching with this in mind. That isn’t always about “wins”, its growth. The wins come with time.

Q: Do you have kids? If so, do you coach them?

A: I have 3 wonderful stepchildren, two of which I coach. It’s like the most fun root canal you could have. I see aspects of myself as a player in both. Both good and bad. One of them sees soccer as a business and his teammates as his co-workers (which is how I was) and it’s great for his soccer career but not so great for his social life. My other will work herself to the bone to be great but has no problem telling me about myself. I’m officially sorry to my goalkeeping coaches for my behavior as a kid. Haha. This isn’t for the weak.

Q: To keep it light-hearted, what is a memorable coaching moment you have?

A: To make it very clear, people develop into their coaches. I was coached (my whole life) by a loud, aggressive, pacing, Italian man. As I developed my coaching career, I turned into him to an extent. My first game in town, I quickly realized this area is NOT used to that. I figured out sooo fast that the relationship dynamics between referees and coaches is important because there are only like 5 in town. It’s funny now and we laugh about it, and I’ve toned it way down, but that was a big adjustment. Fiery coaching is the norm where I am from. Super sorry about that, guys.

can see angles. I played Keeper like a game of chess. In fact, I coach that way. X’s and O’s are my thing. I saw a lot of success. My accolades were great (I don’t really talk about that, because every win is a team win). But the losses I consider mine because I was the keeper (maybe I should unpack that). Evansville is great because it has that small town feel and sports will always be a place for our kids to feel proud--and that’s who I

Q. Let’s finish it off with a question about your glory days. You’re obviously very passionate about soccer, who were you as a player?

A: I do love this game. I’ve been in love with this game for, what, 25 years now. It’s the

Ihave a tendency to become bored with things I feel I can no longer learn from. I’ve had a lifelong battle with discontentment. Once I feel I can’t learn more or that things have taken their natural course, I’ve got to move on to something challenging. That approach can sure make for a bumpy ride at times, but it’s also rewarded me with small bits of wisdom along the way.

I once took a huge risk, leaving a cush job for an unstable project. I had been at this establishment for almost ten years. I’d worked my way from the bottom to the top in my department. I was kind of burnt out and felt like I was spinning my wheels for some time. I wasn’t going to move up any higher at the company. Looking back, I could have just cruised on autopilot for years more at that job. But each day fanned the flames of discontent. I had to move on.

I ended up taking a head chef + ownership position at a developing fine dining spot. I worked every day. The menu was upscale Italian and kicked ass. The kitchen was absolutely disgusting. I cleaned it for days. I wrote all the standards, procedures, and recipes. I did just about everything possible aside from the “red tape” stuff like licenses and permits and meeting with the city

boards. I even gave up my Independence Day to cook a meal for the main guy’s family. Then, in a five-minute meeting, the whole thing blew up. The funding wasn’t actually secured. Everything stopped. I worked for 4-5 months and didn’t get paid for half of it.

I had to move home with my parents until I figured it out. After several months, I ended up begrudgingly taking a job as Head Chef at a corporate retirement home. This position wasn’t my cup of tea. Working for corporations isn’t ideal for me. There is little to no creativity, everything is issued in a blanket, nationwide system. Nothing is personalized. The format is just so clogged and unrealistic in countless ways. You’re just another number.

I really hated the job at the time, but I learned so much. I became a quick pro at balancing the budget. I’d have stacks on stacks of non-perishables, and everything already purchased for the month and end up with a surplus. We were told to ALWAYS spend the extra money, or the budget would decrease in the future. So, I’d end up doing a prime rib for the residents one night or cure our own pancetta and corned beef. Once, I bought a case

of beef tenderloins. The residents AND the staff ate filet mignon that week. I also learned to hone my baking skills here. We made bread and desserts from scratch every day, and I was always altering the processes a bit. Just doing way too much to learn. I ended up needing emergency surgery during my employment here, and the corporate insurance was clutch. We also had a kickass kitchen staff – shout out to Leroy, Rosa, Dale and Don.

I held that position for a year before I finally made the jump back into a restaurant kitchen. Although the job was made mindnumbingly difficult by the corporate extension, I now look back on my time there fondly. This experience is what made me realize that you can learn from any experience in life, ESPECIALLY those you meet with disfavor, if you only pay attention.

Some might consider losing their job and moving back home a setback. But in my character arc, it was just a necessary step to get here. Challenge yourself. Take the risk - for a life without friction is a mind without growth.

Q: What is mediation and why is a judge likely to order the parties to a lawsuit to attend mediation?

A:Mediation is an informal meeting between the parties where settlement is attempted. The mediation normally takes place at a law firm that has adequate conference room space.

Prior to the mediation session, the parties agree upon a mediator to conduct the mediation. A mediator is normally an attorney that serves as a neutral. The mediator’s job is to help the parties reach common ground and settle the case. Most mediators consider the mediation as successful if the case settles

and a loss if the case does not settle at mediation. However, the mediator is not on either side and does not decide who wins or loses. Rather, the mediator helps each side communicate with the other and points out strengths and weaknesses of the case.

Over the years, mediation has proven very successful (some claim a 90% success rate) in allowing parties to resolve their differences without needing to have a formal court trial or hearing. By resolving cases at mediation, the parties can have an informal and less

stressful experience and save the stress, money and time associated with further litigation and trial.

Choosing the right mediator for your case is important and mediators are all different in how they approach certain cases. Your attorney should have a lot of experience in mediation practice. Further, your attorney should be knowledgeable as to the options for a mediator that is right for your case.

Life is full of milestones, and one of the most transformative, and in some cases the most FUN stage comes when the nest is finally empty. The children have grown up and moved out, and sure this can feel like a bittersweet moment, but it also presents an INCREDIBLE opportunity to reimagine your living situation into something completely different than that big old family sized home!

For many empty nesters, especially those approaching their golden years, this new stage in life brings with it the potential need to downsize into a home that is more suited towards their wants and needs. Whether it’s going to a home without steps, a place with less lawn maintenance, or maybe even shifting to the totally maintenance free lifestyle of condo living, this can be a really fun and exciting move!

The Emotional and Practical Side of Downsizing

Downsizing is more than just moving into a smaller home. It’s about aligning your living situation with your current (or future) lifestyle. For many empty nesters, maintaining a large family home can feel completely impractical. Rooms that were once filled with the noise and energy of children may now sit unused or even empty, all the while you continue paying taxes, insurance, and utilities on these spaces.

When approaching the downsizing process, it’s important to evaluate both your emotional readiness and practical needs:

- Reflect on Your Lifestyle: Consider how you spend your time and the type of home that supports your interests and hobbies. Do you want a low-maintenance condo, a cozy cottage near family, or maybe even a home in an active senior living community?

- Declutter with Intention: Downsizing often involves letting go of possessions you no longer need. Start early and take a systematic approach, keeping items that hold sentimental or practical value and donating or selling the rest.

- Prioritize Accessibility: Think ahead to your future needs. Features like single-level living,

wider doorways, and step-free entryways can make a home more comfortable as you age. Even if you don’t have any need for these amenities now, it’s far better to planahead, rather than need costly upgrades, or even worse, another move down the road.

Financial Benefits of Downsizing

The financial advantages of downsizing can be substantial. Selling a larger home and moving to a smaller, less expensive property often allows those approaching or already in retirement to:

- Reduce Monthly Expenses: Smaller homes typically come with lower utility bills, property taxes, and maintenance costs.

- Free Up Equity: By selling a larger and more expensive home, you can access the equity you’ve built over the years to fund your retirement, pay off debt, or invest in other opportunities.

- Simplify Your Estate: A smaller home can make it easier for your heirs to manage your estate in the future.

What About the Reverse Mortgage Option for Purchasing a New Home?

While downsizing can free up equity, some may find themselves wondering how to maximize their finances for retirement. One GREAT option for seniors is the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) for Purchase—commonly referred to as a Reverse Mortgage.

Here’s how it works:

A reverse mortgage allows seniors aged 62 or older to purchase a new primary residence using a combination of the proceeds from the sale of their previous home (or other assets) and the reverse mortgage loan. One of the most attractive features of a reverse mortgage is that it does not require monthly mortgage payments. Instead, the loan balance is repaid when the borrower moves out of the home, sells it, or passes away. By using a reverse mortgage, seniors can preserve more of their cash savings and investments while still securing the perfect home for

this next phase of life. Finally, since monthly mortgage payments aren’t required, you can enjoy improved financial flexibility, enabling travel, the pursuit of new hobbies, or address medical or other unexpected expenses.

So, What Are You Waiting For?

If you’re ready to embrace this exhilarating next chapter of your life, here’s a roadmap to help you navigate the process:

- Consult with Professionals: Work with a trusted real estate agent who understands the needs of seniors and the financial products available to you. In addition to helping you assess your specific housing needs, your agent should have several lender referral who are specialist in both forward and reverse mortgages for you to meet with and help you understand your options.

- Evaluate Your Financial Picture: Review your budget and determine how much you can afford to spend on a new home. Factor in potential savings from downsizing.

- Tour Properties: Visit a variety of homes to get a sense of what’s available. Pay attention to the accessibility features, proximity to family, healthcare facilities, and other amenities you may want or need.

- Make the Move: Once you’ve chosen a new home, develop a plan for moving that includes downsizing your belongings and preparing your old home for sale.

Downsizing and exploring senior housing options can be a liberating experience that sets the stage for a fulfilling and active retirement. Whether you’re looking to simplify your life, free up financial resources, or move closer to loved ones, this transition can open the door to new opportunities. By leveraging tools like a reverse mortgage, you can approach this next chapter with confidence and enjoy the freedom to live life on your terms! So, if you are ready, reach out to a trusted real estate professional and start planning your future today!

FEBRUARY MUSIC REVIEWS

Mac Miller is living up to his “Thank U Next” prophecy – his halo glowing bright with his second posthumous release, Heaven on Earth. Recorded around 2014, these songs were crafted during a time when Miller was in a space of artistic evolution, unaware the world would not get to hear this beautiful work until after his untimely overdose in 2018. Standout tracks include jazzy "5 Dollar Pony Rides” and "Stoned," with its hypnotic, echoing beats and Miller’s signature smooth flow. Heaven on Earth explores uncharted territory with the futuristic, chill-techno vibes of "Shangri-La” and "DJ’s Chord Organ," a sultry and intimate collaboration with SZA oozing with warmth and sensuality. Mac Miller may be in his ethereal era, but this album is heaven on earth. 5 stars. -Marisa Patwa

The High Road

RCA Records

If you haven’t heard Kane Brown and Marshmello’s pop-country collab, “Miles On It” yet, then you’ve likely been living under a rock. While the song personally irritates my eardrums, popular vote rules me out. Brown continues traveling along on his road trip theme with “Backseat Driver,” a heartfelt tribute to the three children he shares with wife and fellow singer Katelyn Brown. Mrs. Brown kindly lends her beautiful vocals in “Body Talk” and the blend of his grit and her power make for pure magic. Kane Brown’s interpretation of Phil Collins classic “In The Air,” with “I Can Feel It” is a surprising choice for the singer, but it works. Kane Brown is truly a revolutionary artist, blending and experimenting with different genres while still staying true to the heartbeat of his country roots. 4.5 stars -Marisa Patwa

THE WEEKND

Hurry up Tomorrow XO Records/Republic Records

In his sixth studio album, The Weeknd showcases his classic falsetto with the same melancholic R&B energy we've come to expect. Lead single “Dancing in the Flames” is a catchy, retro-infused radio banger. While tailor-made for mainstream success, the chorus risks overstaying its welcome. Having been around the block, The Weeknd called on some fresh collaborators to help elevate the album. Playboi Carti injects some gritty energy into “Timeless,” while Anitta graces “São Paulo” with a vibrant flair. Brief as these guest features were, they welcomed some musical variety to The Weeknd’s moody sound palette. Hurry Up Tomorrow marks the third chapter in a trilogy that began with After Hours (2020) and continued with Dawn FM (2022), rounding out a self-reflective arc in the artist’s career. 3.5 stars -Marisa Patwa

BLUES WITH BRAGIN

SUNNY BLEAU & THE MOONS Passion and Regrets Endless Blues Records

Sunny Bleau & The Moons has come out with their new album Passion & Regrets. The CD begins with “Two Glasses of Whiskey on Ice”, a song where Sunny Bleau sings about a woman who gets dressed up and goes out for a night of fun. “You Better Put the Coffee On” features Kiersi Joli on harmonica as Bleau sings a lament after her man left with no explanation. Rick Steff plays top notch piano on “Low-Down-MiddleAged-Blues” as Bleau muses on the passage of time. “Peacock Strut” boasts a cool guitar from Nicholas A. Cocco while Bleau sings about a well-dressed man out on the town looking for love.

“S-H-E-E-E-W-O-M-A-N” features heavy drumming from James Cunningham while bragging about her independence and sway over men. A guest spot from Jeff Jensen playing jazzy guitar brings life to a cover of the classic “Why Don’t You Do Right?”. Steff’s piano adds a nice touch on “Waitin’ on A Man” while Bleau bemoans a less than perfect relationship. “You Put Me Out” offers a heavy rock feel as Bleau sings about being tossed aside by someone who failed to treat her with respect. A California surf rock sound permeates “Deep Regretful Blues” as Cunningham goes wild on the drums. The album ends with “Memphis Bound (It is Well with My Soul)”, a song about going to Beale Street. FEBRUARY BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer poured a slightly hazy amber color. I really enjoyed the sweet hops flavor. I don't get very excited for lagers because they are sort of blah to me, but I actually enjoyed this one. It was somewhat complex as I was able to taste the light spices, malts and just an allaround good flavor. Not your usually lager and I will have to keep my eye out for this one.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This lager pours a golden hue with a bready aroma. It has a light body, and it’s smooth on the palate with a slight sweetness and a hint of hop bitterness. It’s more flavorful than a large-scale commercial light lager yet doesn’t weight you down. 5.2% ABV. 4/5

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head rests on this lager and evaporates very slowly. A good balance of malt and hops fills the nose. Similarly, malt and hops play on the tongue during the first sip, with a good burst of carbonation. This seems like a great beer for everyday drinking, especially during a hot day in the summer. Pair it with a variety of classic foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a very dark beer and what I am used to with Upland since I like their teddy bear kisses. I would almost give it a 5 and maybe I should have. It does have a 11% ABV and is very smooth. I could smell the peppermint right away. This is a very festive beer for the holidays. The only downside is it is very filling. Not a session beer but the chocolate and peppermint flavors were like having dessert. I haven’t seen this on the shelf but will keep an eye out for it.

PAUL HOLLYFELD -

4.75

This imperial stout pours a deep black, with a thin caramel head. Notes of chocolate and peppermint are distinct on the nose. On the palette more of the same chocolate and peppermint, with a dark chocolate bitterness on the finish. It is lighter bodied than it looks, with a little more carbonation than expected for an Imperial Stout. If you like thin mint cookies, you’ll like this one a lot. If only this was on nitro, to give it a milkshake creaminess, I would rate it a 5/5. A worthy dessert beer. 4.75/5

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A decent tan head crowns this stout when poured into a traditional English pub glass, but it disappears quickly. The scent contains generous amounts of peppermint and chocolate like peppermint bark or mint chocolate chip ice cream. The peppermint and chocolate remain with the initial tasting and stay in the long finish. Add a scoop of your favorite mint or chocolate ice cream for an adult float, or pair it with your favorite mint and chocolate desserts.

BOURBON & SPIRIT REVIEW

EXOTICO TEQUILA

For this month’s cocktail recipe, I chose Exotico Tequila. With a price point under $20.00, you can surprise your significant other with an amazing cocktail and save some money for the gift.

Appearance: Exotico Tequila comes in a simple, understated bottle with Day of the Dead styling. The blanco version is clear and pale gold with a unique white label accompanied by a beautiful sugar skull design.

Aroma: The blanco tequila has a strong, raw agave aroma with notes of black pepper

and roasted vegetables. While Exotico uses modern techniques to make their tequila, their ingredients are natural and the flavor shows.

Taste: The blanco tequila is rustic and robust, with a fiery flavor profile that includes black pepper, mesquite, and green pepper. While its best suited for mixing, it can be a rather easy sipping tequila. If you are looking for more of a straight tequila with flavor, I'd recommend their reposado label as it's very approachable.

Here’s a fun tequila recipe based on the Romantasy series my wife is reading right now, adapted from A Coupe of Thorns and Rosé: Romantasy Cocktails to Quench Your Thirst: A Cocktail Recipe Book. Throw in a little pink champagne and you have the perfect Valentine’s Day cocktail.

A COUPE OF THORNS & ROSÉ:

INGREDIENTS

• 1 ½ oz Silver Tequila

• ⅔ oz Cranberry Juice

• ½ oz Lemon Juice

• ⅓ oz Simple Syrup

• 2 Oz Brut Rosé Sparking Wine

Mouthfeel: The blanco tequila has a smoother mouth feel than many tequilas at this price range. It avoids the heavy burn you receive at lower price marks while keeping flavor.

Finish: Exotico Tequila is a great value for its price, especially the reposado version. It's a versatile tequila that works well in cocktails and can also be enjoyed neat.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Add tequila, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup into a shaker.

2. Fill with ice and shake until chilled.

3. Strain into a Champagne coupe.

4. Top with Rosé.
