March is the month of green! From rivers dyed emerald to parades brimming with leprechauns, there’s no denying that St. Patrick’s Day is a truly unique holiday. Beyond the pitchers of beer, four-leaf clovers, and green attire, this beloved celebration carries a rich and fascinating history. Before diving into the festivities, let’s take a moment to explore the origins and traditions of St. Patrick’s Day—you may just learn something new!
Did you know that St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, wasn’t actually Irish? Similarly, many of the dishes associated with the holiday aren't traditional Irish fare. St. Patrick’s Day parades in the United States initially served as a way for Irish immigrants to express pride in their heritage. Let’s explore the life of St. Patrick himself and learn why the color green has become synonymous with March 17th. Plus, we’ll delve into some traditional ways to mark the occasion.
It might surprise you to learn that St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t always a raucous holiday filled with beer and lively parades. Originally, it was a solemn religious feast day honoring Ireland’s patron saint. Established in 1631, it was a sacred observance in Christianity,
particularly among Catholics. Since it occurred during Lent, many saw it as an opportunity to take a brief reprieve from their fasting before Easter. It wasn’t until 1904 that St. Patrick’s Day became a public holiday in Ireland.
The first St. Patrick’s Day parades weren’t held in Ireland but in the United States. Boston, New York City, and other major American cities saw their first parades in the 1700s, organized by Irish immigrants who wished to celebrate their roots. As Irish populations grew, so did the popularity of the holiday. By the 1900s, March 17th had become a widely recognized celebration across the U.S., marked by parades, corned beef and cabbage (a dish more American than Irish), and, of course, a sea of green.
New York City hosts the largest and oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the United States, with roots tracing back to the 1670s when Irish soldiers serving in the British army in New York began the tradition. Chicago takes the celebration a step further by dyeing the Chicago River green every March 17th—a tradition accompanied by a three-day-long festival spanning the city.
Saint Patrick was a real person who played a crucial role in spreading Christianity
to Ireland. Born in Roman Britain during the 5th century, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and forced into slavery in what is now Northern Ireland. During his years as a shepherd, he turned to Christianity for solace. After escaping captivity, he later returned to Ireland as a missionary, using baptism and confirmation to spread his faith.
One of the most enduring legends about St. Patrick claims that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. However, historians believe there were never any snakes in Ireland to begin with, and instead believe the snakes were an allegory for those practicing paganism.
What began as a solemn religious holiday has transformed into a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and heritage. Its rich history, steeped in folklore and tradition, showcases the resilience and pride of the Irish people while fostering a sense of unity across cultures. As we (sham)rock our green attire and celebrate every March 17th, we honor not only St. Patrick himself but also the enduring legacy of the Irish.
Whether you’re attending a parade, dancing to traditional Irish music, or simply sharing a pint of Guinness with friends, St. Patrick’s Day is a joyful tribute to the vibrant cultural tapestry that continues to shape our world. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

In a world of cheap, mass-produced stuff, remember to slow down and search out the treasures -- the hand-crafted, the upcycled, the unique and slightly screwy.
Inside Corkscrew Curiosities in Henderson, you’ll find not only a selection of vintage dentures, retro toys, a graphic novel of The Yellow Wallpaper and a brass cup of raccoon baculum (look it up, you might
need one), but also a celebration of unusual local artistry.
There aren’t many floral watercolors here, but you’ll find uranium glass jewelry, small taxidermy, graphic pieces by local artists, even hand-sewn clothing and macrame disco ball holders.
Jasmine Elzy and Kyla Ford are cousins who co-own the shop.
“Our grandmother, Anna Jane Stanley, instilled in us a love of old things,” Elzy said. “She owned the Corkscrew Deli downtown for many years, so we named the shop after her.”
Ford said, “We always went around with her to garage and estate sales, and she had an excellent eye for finding the special piece and she taught us that.”
When the pandemic hit in 2020, the cousins found themselves at loose ends.
“I think a lot of people had the same moment and were like, ‘the world sucks, what are we doing?’” Ford said. “We were at a family get-together and decided to start an Etsy shop selling the stuff we had in our basements, because we were always thrifting and finding cool stuff, and we couldn’t keep buying it because our houses were going to explode. We wanted to rescue those things and get them into homes that would appreciate them.”
In 2021 they opened the online shop. Within months, they had a booth inside of The Elm emporium in downtown Henderson where they sold their own vintage stock, stickers, and some pieces by local artists. It was successful enough that they opened their first solo store in November 2021, and finally moved to the current, even larger shop this past August. More space meant more goodies, and now, 15 local artists sell their work in the shop.
In a back room, some artists offer classes (insect pinning and wood cutout painting are two recent ones), and soon there will be a monthly exhibit from a local maker.
Here is a list of artists currently selling work at Corkscrew Curiosities:

For Hattie Hancock and her mother, Holly Hartman, owning a bridal boutique was a lifelong dream that became reality at the perfect moment. The duo officially took over the business in August, rebranding it as Hattie James Bridal.
"We were approached with the opportunity in June, and within a week, we knew this was what we wanted," Hattie shares. "By August, we had signed the paperwork, and on October 18th, we celebrated our grand opening!"
The name Hattie James is a tribute to Hattie’s son, Crafton, whose middle name is James. In a beautiful twist of fate, he was born just two days before they signed the papers.
With fresh energy and vision, Hattie James Bridal has been completely transformed. From an elegant atmosphere to a stunning collection of designer gowns, the boutique is a haven for brides seeking the perfect dress.
"We changed the look completely," Hattie says. "We wanted a space where brides could have a memorable and personal experience."
The boutique carries renowned designers, including:
• Rebecca Ingram by Maggie Sottero

• Clean Couture – Minimalistic designs with a tailored silhouette create a sleek and sophisticated look for modern brides.
• Structured Bodices with Basque Waists and Boning – These sculpted silhouettes provide both support and style, enhancing the bride’s natural shape.
• Brocade and Floral Accents –Textured fabrics and delicate floral details add a touch of whimsy and depth to wedding gowns.
• Bold Suit Options – Vibrant hues, textured fabrics, and unique details allow grooms to showcase their personal style while complementing the wedding aesthetic.
• Suit Purchase Over Rental – More grooms are purchasing suits instead of renting, opting for a tailored fit that can be worn beyond the big day.
• Versatility Over Formality – Unless your wedding is a true black-tie affair—with all guests in floor-length gowns—a suit instead of a tuxedo is the best choice. It offers more versatility and opportunities for customization, making the groom’s look just as special as the bride’s.

Let’s Get Fit
Hi everyone! My name is Thomas Blane, and I’m the writer for Quick Fit. Today, I want to share a little bit about myself and what I hope you take away from the articles you read here.
What is Quick Fit?
Simply put, Quick Fit is all about exploring different gyms, restaurants, and sports nutrition stores, showcasing what they have to offer, and hopefully sparking your interest in trying something new.
I want you all to see things through my lens as I share my experiences at various places. There are so many cool things to do in Evansville and the surrounding TriState area, and my goal is to experience as much as possible and share it with you. My hope is that by stepping out of my comfort zone, I can inspire you to do the same.
Reaching for a New Goal: Ready to Get Fit
This year, I’ll be documenting my boxing journey and sharing what I learn along the way. Over the past five months, I’ve
discovered just how much strength I have inside. I’ve learned that I can actually fight for three full minutes, but more importantly, I’ve realized that confidence grows when you push yourself to try something you once thought you couldn’t do.
Putting yourself in tough situations and working through them changes you mentally. By the end of every day that I box, I go home with a sense of fulfillment—knowing I gave it my all, pushed through challenges, and didn’t give up. It’s an amazing feeling to have that small sense of control over your progress and growth.
Don’t get me wrong—boxing is tough, and it can be dangerous. But it also teaches you how to move under pressure and adapt to difficult situations. I love what this sport has done for me, and now my daughter is in the ring learning the ropes as well. Boxing has become our Saturday morning hangout, and at just five years old, she’s already showing incredible skill. It’s amazing to see!
I definitely recommend making fitness a family activity. Boxing is a great stress reliever, and NO—you don’t have to spar to learn how to box. You can hit the bag or work on mitt drills all day if you want. But if you do decide to step into
the ring, go for it! Everyone at the gym is willing to take it easy on beginners because learning takes time. You don’t have to hit hard to teach or to learn.

Iget it. You're thinking about your brand, and maybe you're a little overwhelmed. You know it's important, but it feels like there's so much more to it than just a logo. And you're absolutely right.
Branding is so much deeper than that. It's the very essence of your business, the promise you make to your customers, and the feeling they get when they interact with you. It's the whole package, not just a pretty picture. Too many businesses make the mistake of thinking a logo is the beginning and end of branding. They slap it on everything and call it a day. But truly successful branding is a much deeper, more strategic process. It's about crafting a cohesive and compelling identity that resonates with your audience on an emotional level.
So, what goes into building a memorable brand? Several key pieces work together. Think about your visual identity. This is where the logo comes in, but it's also about so much more. Consider your colors, fonts, imagery – all the visual elements that create a consistent and recognizable look. Then there's your voice and tone. How do you communicate? Are you friendly and approachable, or more formal and professional? Your voice and tone define your brand's personality. And of course, your values and mission. What do you stand for? What's your purpose? Your values and mission are the core beliefs that drive your business.
Customer experience is huge. Every single interaction a customer has with your business contributes to their overall impression. From browsing your website to talking to customer service, it all matters. Finally, consider your brand promise. What can customers expect from you, every single time? This is the cornerstone of trust and loyalty.
Let me give you a concrete example. Imagine a local bakery. They have a cute logo, sure, but their branding goes way beyond that. The smell of fresh bread wafts out onto the street, drawing you in. The displays are artfully arranged, and the staff greets you with a warm smile. They remember your usual order and offer helpful suggestions. They're involved in the community, sponsoring local events and donating to charities. They've created an experience, a feeling of belonging. That's powerful branding.
Why is all this so important? Because strategic branding builds trust, creates emotional connections, and sets you apart from the competition. It's about forging a real relationship with your audience.
A strong branding strategy has tangible benefits. It fosters customer loyalty, enhances brand recognition, and ensures consistent messaging across all platforms. It increases the perceived value of your offerings and ultimately drives sustainable growth. So, how do you do it?
Define your brand strategy and unique positioning. Consider what makes you different and what you bring to the table.
Understand your target audience. Identify who, specifically, you are trying to reach. What are their needs and desires?
Develop a comprehensive brand identity system. Combine all the visual and verbal elements together into a cohesive whole. Establish clear guidelines, making sure everyone in your organization understands and represents the brand consistently.
Live your brand. Perhaps most importantly, live it. It's not just about what you say, it's about what you do. As you navigate the landscape of building your brand, remember this: it's not about chasing fleeting trends or creating a superficial facade. It's about uncovering the authentic heart of your business and crafting a story that resonates deeply with your audience. It's about building trust, fostering connection, and ultimately, creating a brand that not only stands out, but truly matters. That's the kind of brand people fall in love with at the end of the day.
IT'S ABOUT BUILDING TRUST, FOSTERING CONNECTION, AND ULTIMATELY, CREATING A BRAND THAT NOT ONLY STANDS OUT, BUT TRULY MATTERS.
One question I am asked quite often is what local restaurants offer fresh oysters as a regular menu item. Although that list of restaurants is short, one east side location is a standout for all things seafood.
Catfish Willy’s Seafood & Comfort
Cuisine is located at the corner of Virginia and Metro Ave in the Metro Shoppes strip mall. Their original location opened in 2012 in a small building in Owensboro, KY that they quickly outgrew, necessitating a move to a larger space on Tamarack Road. In less than 2 years the crowds grew so large that they were operating on a wait, so they knocked out a wall and took over the space next door. In 2018 owner Angela Melvin decided to open and focus on a singular Evansville location, as many of her customers were already coming from Indiana. By the winter they had opened in the former Nagasaki location and were busier than ever.
What’s the draw? Quality seafood, a unique menu with reasonable pricing and décor inspired by the ocean and the Caribbean. There are bright, colorful murals throughout the restaurant, all hand painted by Melvin. Realistic sharks hang from the ceiling and fishing nets, starfish, shells and boating paraphernalia adorn the walls.
The restaurant is well known for their seafood beach bucket boils, which can be ordered with shrimp, crab or lobster, and are served with potatoes, corn and spicy Cajun sausage. The top selling items are the cornmeal coated catfish and the loaded alligator fries. Thick cut crisp fries are covered in cheese, sweet chili aioli, crumbled bacon and bite sized alligator. Diners can also choose seafood by the pound, including shrimp, snow crab, king crab, Dungeness crab, scallops, crawfish, clams, or the oysters, served on the half shell, grilled or baked. Lobsters can be ordered by the tail. The seafood is cooked in a special house-seasoned
boil with garlic butter and a choice of Old Bay Chesapeake seasoning, a Cajun seasoning or lemon pepper.
One of my favorite menu items are the authentic lobster rolls. Connecticut style served warm and dripping with drawn butter. Or Maine style, served cold and coated in a light dressing of mayonnaise, herbs, salt, pepper and lemon juice. They also offer crab cakes, crab & shrimp dip, fried green tomatoes, frog legs, ribeye steaks and even seafood ramen. For dessert, their cookie dough fudge cake is something you shouldn’t pass up! Lunch and dinner items are available for dine in, pickup and delivery.
There is also a comfort food menu, including salads, Grippos meatloaf, chicken fried chicken, Salisbury steak, and hamburgers from Hoosier Burger
Their hours of operation are Monday - Saturday: 11am - 9pm and Sunday: 11am - 4pm. Parking is available in a large public lot. There is a large room as well as a separate dining area for overflow or to be used for private parties, as well as some outdoor seating. You can contact the restaurant by calling the number below, or on Facebook @ catfish.willys/

ew stories capture passion, dedication, and family legacy like Bodine’s Newsstand. Launched in October 2023 by Ryan Bodine, this mobile eatery quickly gained traction for its delicious offerings and the heartfelt history behind its name.
With 30 years of experience spanning roles from cook to director, Bodine longed for independence and the freedom to create something of his own.
“The Newsstand was the name of the first ‘restaurant’ I worked at in Sullivan, IN,” Bodine explains. “It was my mom’s favorite place to meet friends. My great-grandparents owned it when it was called ‘Boyle’s Newsstand.’ It was my first job, my first experience working with the public. I wanted to bring a bit of that with me.”
Naming his food truck “Bodine’s Newsstand” was a no-brainer—a tribute to his roots and a continuation of a community legacy.
Like many new business owners, Bodine faced challenges. Startup capital, legal hurdles, and multiple permits in Indiana and Vanderburgh County were just the beginning. But the real test came on opening day.
“Day one was chaos,” Bodine recalls. “We had a line down the block, four small electric fryers, and my kids had no idea what to do. But the community’s reception was overwhelming. That night, my wife and I thought, ‘Maybe this is actually doable!’”
Balancing professional expectations with family was another challenge. “I had to remind myself that my kids didn’t ‘sign up’ to help Dad. They weren’t employees; they were my family. I had to make it fun and educational for them.”
Bodine’s Newsstand offers comfort food classics with a creative twist.
“Fish n’ Chips is our top seller, but our burgers are making headway,” says Bodine. “We’re really excited about our new ‘Messy Hand Cuts’ lineup, perfect for festival-type events.”
Seasonal specials keep things fresh. “I like doing a stew in winter, a Cajun/Creole theme for Mardi Gras, and more Irish-heavy items for St. Patrick’s Day.”
When asked about the biggest logistical challenge, Bodine doesn’t hesitate. “Space! I’d love to do more, but space is tight, and equipment is limited. I don’t want people waiting more than 5-8 minutes for their food.”
Using technology and his experience in fast-casual dining, Bodine optimizes workflow to maintain efficiency without sacrificing quality, ensuring quick service at a fair price.
For Bodine, customer engagement is simple: authenticity. “As Popeye said, ‘I yam what I yam.’ Being real, honest, and appreciative makes all the difference.”
Rather than investing in elaborate marketing campaigns, Bodine’s approach is refreshingly straightforward. “I post where I’ll be and when. That’s about it. When I introduce a new special, I like to share the story behind it. It might not be a big seller, but if it has a personal connection, I want to share that experience.”
Success, for Bodine, is about execution. “I measure success by how smooth an event runs. Of course, money matters, but my real goal is making sure people get their food quickly and easily.”
His philosophy centers on continuous improvement, training his team—including his children—to work efficiently while maintaining a positive and sustainable work environment.
For the first time in decades, Bodine feels at ease in his career. “I don’t feel like I’m working. I can take a day off for a family event, say no when we need a break, and spend time with my kids. Sometimes they just come and go from the trailer as they please, and that works for us.”
This flexibility makes all the stress and hard work worth it, proving success isn’t just about climbing the corporate ladder—it’s about taking control of your own path.
His advice for aspiring food truck owners? Start simple. “Make what you want in the simplest way possible. Have a limited selection at first, then expand. Start with what you can do exactly the same way every time.”
Looking back, there’s only one thing he wishes he’d done differently. “I wish I had known I could’ve done this years ago. I’d have been much happier and fulfilled—maybe a little stressed—but ultimately more content. It took me a long time to believe in myself enough to pull the trigger.”
Bodine’s Newsstand is more than a food truck—it’s a piece of history, a labor of love, and proof that success often comes from returning to your roots and doing what you love.
To find out where Bodine’s Newsstand will be next, follow them on Facebook and join the growing family of food lovers discovering the magic of this rolling piece of culinary history.
See you down the road!
WITH JIM JOHNSON
Normally, we dive into recipes that highlight grills, smokers, and all things smoky, but March brings a refreshing change. With winter winding down and spring knocking at the door, it feels like the perfect time to bring the cooking indoors and focus on hearty, comforting meals with a hint of freshness. Whether you're celebrating the season's shift, hosting a cozy gathering, or simply treating yourself to something special, this three-course meal will be one that’s talked about well into the warmer months.
March is all about transitions—moving from the hearty comfort foods of winter to the brighter, lighter flavors of spring. And what better way to honor this seasonal shift than by preparing a delightful three-course dinner? From fresh, vibrant appetizers to a rich main course and a decadent dessert, the magic of a homemade meal is unparalleled. Let’s dive into creating an unforgettable evening meal that’s perfect for March.
Appetizer: Caprese Bruschetta with a Spring Twist
Kick off the evening with an elegant yet simple appetizer—Caprese Bruschetta. While traditionally a summer dish, this version brings a fresh, early-spring vibe by incorporating microgreens or arugula for a peppery punch. The combination of ripe tomatoes, fragrant
basil, creamy mozzarella, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze will have your taste buds dreaming of sunnier days ahead. Toast slices of baguette until golden and crisp, then top each one with a mixture of diced tomatoes, fresh basil, mozzarella, and microgreens. Finish it with a balsamic glaze and a sprinkle of sea salt and black pepper. The vibrant colors and flavors of this dish are a perfect nod to the season’s changing palate.
Main Course: Garlic Butter Steak with Roasted Spring Vegetables
For the main course, prepare a succulent Garlic Butter Steak paired with flavorful Roasted Spring Vegetables. Sear a highquality steak in a hot skillet to your preferred doneness, then infuse it with a luscious garlic butter sauce for extra richness. Complement the steak with an assortment of roasted seasonal vegetables—think baby carrots, asparagus, and radishes—tossed in olive oil, salt, and pepper. The tender, juicy steak paired with the bright flavors of spring veggies creates a harmony of flavors that’s sure to impress. This, my friends, will have your neighbors peeking over the fence with envy!
Dessert: Molten Lava Cake for a Cozy Night In No dinner is complete without a decadent dessert, and Molten Lava Cake is the ultimate indulgence. This rich, velvety chocolate dessert with its warm, gooey
center is the perfect way to wrap up a cozy March evening. Prepare a simple chocolate cake batter, fill individual ramekins, and place a piece of dark chocolate in the center of each. As they bake, the edges will firm up while the centers remain delightfully molten. Serve warm with a dusting of powdered sugar and a scoop of vanilla ice cream—or even a touch of fresh berries if you’re feeling that early spring vibe. The combination of warm, molten chocolate and cold, creamy ice cream is pure comfort in every bite.
As the evening unfolds, each course of this meal becomes an expression of the season’s shift and your love for great food. Preparing a three-course dinner is not just about satisfying hunger—it’s a sensory experience and a heartfelt gesture that will linger in memory. So, set the table, dim the lights, and savor the magic of the moment as you enjoy this delicious meal, perfect for welcoming the spring season.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this article as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it! Until next month—Bon Appétit!

I love making a protein source that I can use in a variety of different ways throughout the week. I am the type that batch cooks different proteins, so I always have something ready for quick lunches and dinner. This shredded pork is flavorful and really hits the spot with homemade mashed potatoes. My children love the leftovers made into delicious quesadillas. The possibilities are endless!
Ingredients:
• 4 lbs. boneless pork butt
• ¼ c. coconut sugar
• 1 ½ T. sea salt
• 1 ½ T. paprika
• 1 ½ T. garlic powder
• 1 ½ T. onion powder
• ½ tsp. chili powder
Directions:
1. Set your pork butts onto a lined baking sheet.
2. Mix sugar and spices until combined.
3. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork butts and place into a crockpot.
4. Take the spices that are remaining on the baking sheet and pour on top of the pork butts in the crockpot. (No liquid is needed due to the fat content of the pork butts.)
5. Set the crockpot to low for 8 hours. Once completed shred with two forks and enjoy on toasted buns, on top of roasted potatoes/mashed potatoes, or on top of a big hearty salad!

The restaurant business is a rough road, and success is far from guaranteed in a business with very narrow margins for profit. A study by Ohio State University found that 60% of new restaurants didn't make it past the first year, and 80% close within five years. It's not a venture for the weak.

On March 13, 2025, the Bokeh Lounge will resonate with the sounds of blues as friends, musicians, and community members gather to honor the memory of Bob Hernandez. The tribute, generously donated by Jessica Nuffer and Bokeh will commence at 6 p.m. Celebrate with your hosts, Lynette Miller and Paul Mattingly, the deep ties Bob nurtured within the Southern Indiana music scene and beyond.
Bob, who passed away on October 16, 2024, was a private man with a profound love for music and an unwavering commitment to the people who created it. His spirit will be celebrated through the music he cherished, performed by an impressive lineup of artists who were touched by his kindness and support. Slated as an all-night jam, an unlikely combination of talents becomes a likelihood on the Bokeh stage.
The evening's lineup will feature performances by Michael Gough, Roy Carter, Tommy Stillwell and his band (with
Tri-state recording artist and live performer reports on upcoming event at Bokeh Lounge in honor of River Basin Blues Society’s co-founder Bob Hernandez.
hopes that Big Jon Rochner will join), Gary Jines, Larry Caddell, folks from 2 Miles Back, Bobby Clark and his band, Ryan Rigdon, and David Dunavent from Mississippi. Each artist will bring their unique style for a once in lifetime soundscape to echo Bob's passion for the music that moved him. Many more artists, including this writer, may also make appearances throughout the night.
The tribute is more than just a jam; it's a testament to Bob's lasting impact. There will be no cover charge, staying true to Bob's humble nature and his belief in the unifying power of music. Instead, a donation bucket will be placed at the door for those who wish to contribute with every dollar collected going directly to the Evansville Rescue Mission, an organization close to Bob's heart. Bob spent countless weekends and holidays there, helping to feed the homeless—an extension of his quiet generosity and compassion.
Supporting the musicians on stage, Kevin Book has kindly donated the backline, including guitar amps and all additional stage equipment needed. The backline drums will be donated by Brett Holland. Book's contribution ensures that the performers can focus on what they do best: sharing the music that Bob loved so dearly while having one hell of a time in the process.
This night isn’t just about remembering Bob; it's about celebrating the community he helped build, the music he adored, and the lives he quietly uplifted along with the River Basin Blues Society he co-founded.
Join us at Bokeh Lounge to honor and remember Bob Hernandez, a man who, as Jon Snyder—an area guitarist and possible
musical guest—puts it, “Bob was a truly wonderful person. He loved music and he loved people. Really the only thing he didn’t seem to love was wearing pants.” Um…. excuse me, what?
Evidently Bob wore shorts pretty much 100% of the time. Snyder then concluded his witty observation with seven words that could have easily come from anyone who ever knew the man:
“Love ya, Bob, rest easy my friend.”
Thank you for any and all support you give to the Independent artists of the world!- Lindsey Williams
WITH DANNY BROWNING
This time of year is incredible - the excitement of March Madness, the debauchery of St. Patrick’s Day, and the sweet relief of giving up on my New Year’s resolutions. I mean, Good Lawd. A man can only stomach so many blueberry-spinach smoothies before his body starts producing what I describe as purple shamrocks.
It’s also Women’s History Month! In that spirit, I’m dedicating this month’s column to a few of the talented female comedians who have shaped my humor, influenced my writing, and inspired me to be funnier.
Wendy Liebman
Hands down, she’s my number one on the list. When I was a kid discovering comedy, Wendy was one of the first comedians to make me laugh out loud at the television. I didn’t know anything about joke structure or performance, but I knew she was one of the best. Years later, I finally had the honor of working with her in Knoxville, Tennessee, and she was incredible. Her writing was still razor-sharp, and she was just as kind offstage as she was funny onstage.
Laurie Kilmartin
I love elite joke writers, and few are better than Laurie Kilmartin. She
consistently generates new material for her act, is a published author, spent years writing for Conan O’Brien, and is a writer for this year’s Academy Awards. During the pandemic, she was kind enough to do one of my virtual shows, which was a thrill for me and the other comedians, and of course, she was hilarious.
Christine Stedman
A true road comic, Christine Stedman was the first female comedian I ever watched live in a comedy club. She had a way of making everyone relate to her jokes, especially middle-aged women. I remember watching her and thinking, “How do I do that?” Also, she was super friendly and even helped me get opportunities in other comedy clubs. Her best comedy trait is her ability to remain completely authentic. She delivers her material in a hilariously unapologetic way, and all these years later, she’s still just as funny.
Tina Fey
Tina Fey isn’t a stand-up comedian, but she is certainly one of the best comedy writers of all time. She was brilliant on SNL, especially with Weekend Update, and went on to create 30 Rock, which
is still one of the best-written sitcoms ever. Back in the day, I spent countless hours studying her techniques, trying to figure out how to duplicate her genius. Her ability to craft smart, fast-paced comedy with perfectly timed absurdity is something I’ve always admired. She makes it look effortless, but that level of brilliance takes serious skill.
So, as I sit here sipping another green beer and avoiding my evil elliptical, I thank these special comedians. 2012 unexpectedly graced us with two Snow White films we never asked for. First, we had Lily Collins and Julia Roberts in the magical Mirror Mirror, followed by Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron facing off in the dark and gritty Snow White and The Huntsman. Fast forward 13 years, and we’re getting yet another take, this time straight from the Disney playbook. Hunger Games star Rachel Zegler’s real-life fairytale keeps extending, as she dons the role of the iconic princess. Gal Gadot evens out the playing field, cutting deep as her evil stepmother and the Queen. Drawing heavily from Disney’s beloved 1937 animated classic, Zegler will be donning Snow White’s signature blue and yellow dress with puffy shoulders in a more traditional style. Zegler is the perfect fit for this sweet but strong heroine, and it’ll be fun to watch Wonder Woman step into her villain era. With Barbie’s Greta Gerwig penning the script, this version is likely to showcase a punchier, more empowered version of the classic children’s story. This tale may be as old as time, but this might just be Gen Alpha’s Snow White to sing aLong too. IN THEATERS 3/21
A24 has a knack for producing films that are true unicorns—utterly unique in every sense. Their latest release takes that concept quite literally, with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega playing a father-daughter duo who, in a moment of chaos, accidentally hit and kill a unicorn with their car. Coincidentally, they were already on their way to a wellness summit hosted by Rudd’s billionaire pharmaceutical mogul boss. In true villainous fashion, he wants to harvest the creature's DNA for groundbreaking scientific and medical research. And guess what? The unicorn's genes just might be the key to curing cancer. But hold your horses—literally. The unicorn has a living soulmate, and they’re not about to let its death slide—what ensues next looks to be a blood thirsty quest for revenge coupled with a shroom trip that ponders the question of humanity. If the score for the film’s trailer—a zany Weird Science vibe mashed up with "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys—is any indication of how electric and eccentric the film might be, I’m ready to take some lab notes. Ophelia Bauckholt had it all—brains, friends, and a six-figure salary. At just 26, the German math prodigy was living her dream in New York City, making half a million dollars as a quantitative trader Her social circle was filled with brilliant, ambitious people like herself, and life seemed picture-perfect.
But in the spring of 2023, things took a turn. Friends noticed Bauckholt becoming more secretive, spending hours on the phone with unidentified contacts and taking mysterious weekend trips. Then, in November, she vanished. One final flight out of Newark, and she cut off all communication. No goodbyes, no explanations. Just gone.
Fast forward to January 20, 2024. The FBI tracked Bauckholt to northern Vermont, where she and a companion, Teresa Youngblut, were pulled over by U.S. Border Patrol agents. What should have been a routine traffic stop spiraled into a deadly shootout. Authorities say Youngblut fired first, hitting agent David “Chris” Maland. Gunfire erupted, and Bauckholt, armed herself, was shot dead.
Her friends were stunned but not entirely surprised. In the months before her disappearance, Bauckholt had been drawn into a shadowy cult-like group with a dangerous reputation—one linked to multiple murders, a samurai sword attack, and even a faked death.
The Cult of Ziz
At the center of it all? A self-proclaimed mastermind named Jack Amadeus LaSota—known as Ziz—who had been luring in followers with a bizarre mix of tech-world philosophy, veganism, and deep paranoia about artificial intelligence. Ziz and her inner circle, dubbed “Zizians,” believed they were humanity’s last hope against an AIdriven apocalypse. But instead of saving the world, they left a trail of destruction.
Ziz’s group wasn’t just about big ideas. It had a violent streak. Prosecutors have tied its members to the 2022 murder of a Pennsylvania couple, a brutal attack that left an elderly California man blind in one eye, and the execution-style killing of that same man months later— allegedly to keep him from testifying.
And then there’s Ziz herself. Officially, she died in a mysterious boating accident in 2022. There was even an obituary. But the reality? Just months later, police found her alive and well, hiding out in a Philadelphia hotel room. By 2023, she was on the run again.
That’s the million-dollar question. Bauckholt wasn’t the kind of person you’d expect to fall into a violent underground group. She was a numbers genius, a gold medalist in international coding competitions, and a Wall Street success story. But maybe that same brilliant mind was also vulnerable to someone like Ziz—a charismatic leader who promised grand purpose in a chaotic world.
Whatever the reason, Bauckholt left behind the stability of her high-paying job for a life on the run. By the time she resurfaced in Vermont, she was armed, dangerous, and traveling with a known shooter.
The final moments of Bauckholt’s life remain a puzzle. Why was she in Vermont? Was she trying to cross into Canada? Did she believe in the cult’s cause, or was she trying to escape it? What we do know is that when Border Patrol pulled her over, something snapped. A gun was drawn, shots were fired, and Bauckholt—a woman once poised to take Wall Street by storm—was dead.
As the FBI continues to unravel the group’s activities, one thing is clear: Bauckholt’s story is a tragic cautionary tale. A brilliant mind, a promising future, and one fateful decision that led her down a path she couldn’t escape. And somewhere out there, Ziz—if she’s still alive—is watching it all unfold.
As 2025 unfolds, bridal makeup trends are taking a fresh, minimalistic approach, embracing soft, radiant beauty. Gone are the days of heavy contouring and dramatic transformations—this year is all about enhancing natural features with a luminous, "lit from within" glow.
The Skin-Centric Approach
Flawless, healthy-looking skin is the star of 2025 bridal beauty. Brides are prioritizing skincare more than ever, ensuring a smooth,
Skylar Austin of Skylar Austin Esthetics weighs in on bridal makeup trends and a fool-proof plan for perfect wedding day skin.
hydrated base that requires minimal foundation. Lightweight, breathable products with a skin-like finish are replacing full-coverage, matte looks. Dewy, luminous finishes achieved through hydrating primers, liquid highlighters, and sheer foundations are the key to that effortless bridal glow.
The trend leans towards subtle enhancements rather than bold statements. Instead of sharp contouring, soft bronzing and blushing takes center stage. Cream-based blushes in peach, rose, and mauve tones give a flushed-fromwithin effect, seamlessly blending into the skin. Brows are softly defined—brushed up for a fuller, more natural appearance rather than overly sculpted arches.
For eye makeup, the focus is on soft washes of color in champagne, taupe, and warm neutrals. Shimmering lids paired with wispy, fluttery lashes enhance the eyes without looking overdone. A thin, softly smudged liner replaces harsh, graphic lines, maintaining the effortlessly romantic aesthetic, a perfect pairing with the trending strapless ball gown.
Lips in 2025 are plush and hydrated, featuring sheer lip tints, satin finishes, or barely-there glosses in nude, pink, or soft berry shades. The goal is a naturally enhanced pout rather than a heavily lined or overdrawn look.
This year’s bridal beauty is all about glowing skin, soft romantic hues, and an effortless elegance that enhances, rather than transforms. It’s a look that is timeless yet modern—perfect for brides who want to feel like the best version of themselves on their special day.
Bridal Skin Prep with Skylar Austin Esthetics: The Ultimate Glow Plan
Achieving flawless, glowing skin for your wedding day starts with the right skincare routine. At Skylar Austin Esthetics, treatments are tailored to ensure a smooth, radiant complexion that enhances your bridal makeup. Here’s the ultimate pre-wedding skin prep plan to help you achieve that dreamy, lit-from-within glow.
Start with chemical peels to target uneven skin tone, acne scars, and dullness. Peels
help to accelerate cell turnover, revealing fresh, youthful skin underneath. Opt for a series of light to medium-strength peels spaced every 4-6 weeks for the best results.
Incorporate microdermabrasion or dermaplaning treatments to slough off dead skin cells and promote smoother skin texture. Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates, helping with fine lines and hyperpigmentation, while dermaplaning removes peach fuzz and surface debris, allowing makeup to glide on seamlessly.
Now is the time to deeply nourish and hydrate your skin. Monthly hydrating facials with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants will plump and brighten your complexion.
Schedule a final gentle facial to refresh the skin without irritation. Avoid harsh treatments at this stage to prevent any last-minute redness or breakouts. Instead, ask for a soothing facial to lock in hydration and enhance skin radiance.
With Skylar Austin Esthetics, your skin will be wedding-day ready—smooth, luminous, and the perfect canvas for flawless bridal makeup application. Check out Skylar’s Bridal Packages for skin prep and bridal makeup application.
Trying something new as an adult can be daunting, especially when it involves stepping into a ballet studio for the first time. I am not a dancer. I have never been a dancer. So, when I decided to attend an adult ballet class at the Center for Children’s Dance Education (CCDE), I was filled with nervous anticipation. Would I stick out? Would I be the only one struggling? Would it be too late for me to learn?
The moment I walked through the doors of CCDE, located at 5900 Vogel Rd. Ste. A in Evansville, IN, my fears began to ease. The atmosphere was welcoming, the staff friendly, and the other dancers warm and encouraging. It quickly became clear that this was a no-judgment zone. Everyone was there to learn, move, and enjoy the experience—regardless of skill level.
CCDE is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to bringing the beauty of ballet to both children and adults. As a regional ballet school, CCDE not only offers classes but also supports a touring company that performs across the tri-state area. While the organization
is well-known for its children's programs, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the variety of adults who participate in classes— some of whom are well into their 70s.
Our class began with a gentle warm-up at the barre. I did my best to follow along as the instructor guided us through basic positions and movements. I certainly wasn’t graceful, and at times, my limbs seemed to have a mind of their own, but it didn’t matter. No one was judging, and everyone was focused on their own journey.
As we moved into the center of the room, I looked around and saw a diverse group of adults, each with their own reason for being there. Some had danced as children but had taken a long hiatus. Others were there for the physical benefits of ballet—improving strength, flexibility, and balance. One dancer shared, “These classes are for me. I used to dance as a kid, and life got in the way. It feels good to explore something I used to enjoy.” Another classmate explained, “These classes work muscles I didn’t realize were weak. They keep me moving. My hips, back, and core are stronger now.” Ballet, as it turns out, is a surprisingly effective workout, engaging muscles that often go unnoticed in daily life. I could feel my own posture improving by the end of class, and I knew that if I continued, my body would grow stronger in ways I hadn’t expected.
Beyond the physical benefits, ballet also offers emotional and mental wellness. One participant shared, “Dancing fights depression. Doing something for me is really important.” There was an undeniable
joy in moving to the music, in focusing on each movement, and in allowing the outside world to fade away for an hour.
By the time class ended, I was sweaty, slightly sore, and completely exhilarated. I didn’t master any ballet moves that day, but I left feeling accomplished and inspired. The experience wasn’t about perfection—it was about movement, expression, and stepping outside of my comfort zone.
If you’ve ever considered trying ballet as an adult, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. Whether you’re a complete beginner, someone returning to dance after years away, or simply looking for a new way to stay active, the adult ballet classes at CCDE offer a supportive and rewarding environment.
I walked into the studio as a bundle of nerves, but I walked out feeling empowered. Maybe I’m not a dancer yet—but at CCDE, I know I’m in the right place to learn.

Well, it’s March, one of the most exciting times marked annually on every sports fan’s calendar. Of course, the crown jewel of this time of year are the four days of chaos we get at the onset of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, more affectionately known as “March Madness”. As well, Winter sports wrap up their regular season slates, and the NHL and NBA head to their own versions of the post-season playoffs. And finally, as the weather breaks, we are reminded of the return of baseball, and the long, hot Summer ahead of us, just around the corner.
Every year in Lakeland, Florida, at the commencement of Spring Training, legendary sports-caster Ernie Harwell would always open his first broadcast of the year by quoting the same verse from the Song of Solomon, written initially to celebrate the passing of Winter, and the jubilant return of Springtime, “For lo, the Winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.”
Opening Day of baseball, on any level, is one of my favorite half-national
holidays of the year. I head to Detroit every April to meet with friends from West Michigan, Cincinnati, from here in Evansville, and sometimes other places, to watch the Tigers take their home field for the first time every season. It’s a trip that I simply won’t miss.
But as we prepare for the cold to snap, and the weather to warm up, I’d like to take a look at baseball on a more local level. Bosse Field, the third oldest baseball facility in continuous operation in the United States has seen quite a few incredible franchises, minor league teams, and players take its field over the course of its one hundred and ten year history. Initially hosting the Evansville River Rats, and the Evansville Crimson Giants, our local NFL team for two years, all the way through the eighties when it played home to the Evansville Triplets, the Detroit Tigers AAA ball club, at the time, Bosse Field has seen Hammerin’ Hank Greenberg take it’s field, and Kirk Gibson swing a bat, and Mark “The Bird” Fidrych decide what to do in the middle of 2-1 count.
Most recently, well, for thirty years now, the ballpark has played host to the Evansville Otters, who joined the
Frontier League ranks all the way back in 1995. The first pro baseball team Evansville had had since 1984, the Otters were well received right off of the bat. See what I did there? The city packed Bosse Fields’ bleachers and seats in the nineties every time the Otters had a home-stand, and with one division title in 1997, the Otters paid back their faithful by closing out their first decade with three straight playoff berths in 1997, 1998, and 1999. The only thing more cracking than ticket sales were the wooden bats. The Otters picked up in Y2K exactly where they had left off in the nineties, with a division championship in 2000, followed by four playoff appearances in just six years. That fourth appearance, and their final of the decade was a magical 2006 Frontier League Championship run that took the city by storm. Following a 46-50 season, the Otters had somehow backdoor-ed themselves into a playoff spot, but citing team unity, the Evansville baseballers got hot, and took the 2006 Pennant home as league champions.
The 2010’s saw quite a bit of success on the diamond for the Otters, as well. Averaging a playoff spot every other
season, the franchise played well enough to extend their schedules into September five times. However, 2016 was the year from that decade that many Evansvillians remember most fondly. The Otters came out literally swinging, and after a 5540 regular season, found themselves in the Frontier League playoffs stacked up against the Joliet Slammers, whom they vanquished 3 games to 1. They followed that up with a dramatic 3 to 2 series victory against the River City Rascals to claim their second ever Frontier League Championship, just ten years after their first. As the 2010’s wrapped up, the Evansville Otters continued their run of on-field success, capitulated with another Pennant right in the middle of the decade.
The 2020’s aren’t over, and already the Otters have been back to the Frontier League playoffs twice, including a heartbreaking 3 to 2 series loss to the Quebec Capitales in the Championship Series in 2023. This past decade, I’ve gotten to know quite a bit of the Otters’ top brass. Their managers and officers are some of my favorite people in local sports, but one moment that has always stuck with me from the past few years has been from a conversation I was having with their owner Bill Bussing. I’ll never forget that no matter what we were talking about, the conversation always led back to his desire to keep the Otters, and Bosse Field, a safe, valuable place for the average Evansville family.
Bussing was repeatedly more concerned with keeping a Friday night at the Otters as affordable and accessible to everyone in Evansville, far more than he ever seemed concerned about squeezing another buck out of a tired family trying to get their kids out of the house and just afford four Pepsi’s and a few hot dogs. It was clear and present to me, that every person who walks into Bosse Field was important to Mr. Bussing. Otters fans aren’t dollar bills, to this organization… they are neighbors, and friends, and co-workers. I don’t see that changing any time soon, either.
In retrospect, looking back on the thirty years that the Evansville Otters will be celebrating this season, they’ve managed a very sustainable and consistent run of success. When you can count on your favorite baseball team to make the playoffs
an average of every other year, and even pop off and play for a League Pennant every decade, you’ve got it pretty good as a baseball fan. Their on-field success, combined with their commitment to their community, and providing a safe, fair-value place for Evansville families to spend a summer evening has molded the Evansville Otters organization into a cornerstone of this fine city.
And I know, you’re probably reading this on March 4th, and it’s thirty-five degrees outside, and you’re thinking, “why are already talking about baseball Big Cat?”, to which I’ll respond, “because I love it, and because we’ve got a damn gem in the Evansville Otters, and because, before you know it, these snow balls turn into fast balls, and the sun is out, and there is baseball on the radio, and ‘the voice of the turtle is heard in our land’, again.”
I’ll see ya at Bosse Field, this Summer. And as always, thanks for listening!

Hello, friends. My name is Jeremiah Galey. I’m a nearly two-decade veteran of the local food and hospitality industry. I own (along with my beautiful wife, Kimmy) and operate Bad Randy’s Hot Chicken & BBQ Lounge. This column is the mumblings and bumblings of introspection and parallels in life.
Restaurant business comes in seasons, just like life. One day the place will be packed, asses to elbows. Catching up on prep and hydration will be impossible. Your heart rate will be elevated most of the week. Every second of the day, you’ll be moving from task to task at a blistering rate. You’ll be begging for a break just to catch your breath.
Other times, the front door won’t swing open as much. The plates in the dish pit won’t be so loud. The scampering of footsteps will slow. The work will be marginally easier, but time will pass more slowly. Available hours will lessen. You’ll be begging for business to pick back up.
As is life. The beautiful flowers will shrivel and fall. The grass will brown. The garden will fail and die. The animals will hide for the season until happiness blooms once again. Sunlight will fade and as your skin feels less warmth, your mentality will follow. Cold and bitter isn’t a great feeling for the mind.
The great news is every cycle of life is temporary. Every one. The good times will return again one day. Just when you may think hope is lost, the birds chirp, the days become longer, and the dark clouds lift. The gruel of life lessens. Happy days are prevalent.
The terrible news is every cycle of life is temporary. Happiness fades again. Faces smile less, and so on. But don’t give up. People need you. The world is a better place with you in it. The fight must go on. One day there will be a new hope and the sun will shine brighter than you could ever imagine. So hang on for dear life while you’re being tossed around and discarded and run the ringer. Love will prevail.

Highly-respected with an impeccable track record, the firm's aggressive representation of its clients continues to benefit the community in myriad ways.
Q: What is an important part of a personal injury case that is underrated?
A:A very important part of a personal injury case that is not often talked about is maximizing the net recovery from a settlement or verdict. In other words, the power of lien and balance reductions. In sports, it is important to play well both on offense and defense. Likewise, in personal injury law, the client should be concerned not just with the gross amount of the settlement or recovery but also how much the client will “net” from a recovery. Indeed, it should be a goal of any competent personal injury law firm to get the most money into the client’s pocket from a settlement or recovery as possible. Therefore, when discussing your personal injury case with a law firm you are thinking about hiring, a good question to ask
the law firm is what does the law firm’s lien and balance reduction policies, process and procedures look like.
A law firm should work diligently from start to finish on your case, and one way they can maximize the net settlement recovery is by negotiating lien and balance reductions with insurance companies and medical providers for bills that were incurred.
What Are Lien and Balance Reductions?
When there is a settlement or verdict, part of the recovery often goes to pay liens, medical bills, or insurance claims. A personal injury law firm should work hard to reduce those amounts, which means more money stays with the client!
Disclaimer: The above information provided by Siesky Law Firm, PC, is not legal advice and should not be taken as legal advice. Application of the law is highly fact sensitive and readers should consult with an attorney on legal matters. *This is an advertisement.
Negotiating lien reductions involves various laws, discussions and sometimes a lot of backand-forth. While an injured victim is often eager to receive the settlement proceeds, taking a little extra time to get these reductions can lead to a much larger net payout. So, patience is key!
Why It’s Worth the Wait?
Though it may take longer, lien reductions can make a huge difference in the amount of money the client nets from a settlement or recovery. More money in the client’s pocket is always worth the wait!
Ah, the age-old debate—renting vs. buying. It’s like choosing between a high-maintenance relationship and a carefree fling. One offers stability and long-term rewards, while the other provides flexibility and no maintenance responsibilities. So, which is right for you?
Renting is ideal if commitment isn’t your thing. Sign a lease, pay your rent, and let the landlord handle maintenance issues. If the A/C quits, the water heater leaks, or a storm damages the roof—just call the landlord. Low maintenance equals low stress! Another perk of renting is flexibility. If you love change, get a new job, or suddenly want to trade city life for the beach, just don’t renew your lease. No long-term commitment means easy mobility.
Upfront costs are also lower. Renters typically pay a security deposit, pet fee, and first month’s rent. In contrast, buying a home involves costs like appraisals, loan fees, inspections, and insurance.
But renting has its downsides. The biggest? Equity—or rather, the lack of it. Every rent check you write builds your landlord’s wealth, not yours. Housing is usually the largest expense in a budget, and as a renter,
REALTY GROUP & PINNACLE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
you never see a return on that money. Customization is another drawback. Want to paint your walls or update the carpet? Your lease likely says no. And what happens if your landlord decides to sell the property? You could be forced to move when your lease ends, whether you like it or not.
Now, let’s look at homeownership. Owning a home is like a long-term relationship—it requires effort, financial investment, and occasional costly repairs. But it also provides stability, pride, and financial rewards.
One major advantage of homeownership is equity. Instead of making your landlord rich, you’re investing in your future. Over time, your home becomes a financial asset that can build wealth.
Then there’s appreciation—the increase in your home’s value over time. The house you buy for $200,000 today could be worth much more when you retire, helping secure your financial future.
Payment stability is another plus. With a fixed-rate mortgage, your monthly payments remain predictable, aside from
minor fluctuations in taxes and insurance. Rent, on the other hand, is subject to constant increases. Landlords raise rents to match market trends, and there’s no limit to how high it can go.
Lastly, owning means freedom to personalize. Your home reflects your style, whether that’s black walls and bold décor or timeless elegance. Unlike a rental, where customization is limited, a home you own is truly yours.
So, what’s the best choice? Renting offers flexibility, low maintenance, and lower upfront costs, making it great for those not ready to settle down. But if you want to build wealth, secure long-term stability, and invest in your future, homeownership is the way to go.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your lifestyle, financial situation, and longterm goals. Understanding the pros and cons of each can help you choose the best path for your future.

The So You Think You Can Dance Canada alum shot to stardom at only 16 with global hit “You Broke Me First.” At 21, now with her third-studio album, she’s proving she is here to stay in the pop culture ether. Pulsating, beatheavy anthem “It’s OK I’m OK,” oozes confidence, while effortlessly catchy “2 Hands” serves up a danceable pop hook and “Sports Car” showcases McRae’s breathy vocals. All three tracks were produced by One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, who’s known for his masterful ability to blend radio-ready pop with vulnerability. "I Know Love,” is a sweet collaboration with Kid Laroi while “Purple Lace Bra,” “Greenlight” and “Revolving Door” will have you always coming back for more. McRae’s talents in the studio extend to the dance floor, serving up sultry, fun choreo in her music videos. You can’t spell Tate without ate. 4.5 stars-Marisa Patwa
Soulful singer Teddy Swims is graciously giving us a follow up to his smash hit debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) in September 2023. His heart-wrenching lyrics laced with his deep, bellowing vocals, create a masterful musical experience. It’s hard to box Swims into one genre of music when he’s so good at blending them all. At his core, he’s a soul pop artist, but his easy and breezy foray into country, R&B, pop and rock should not go unnoticed. He’s a true artist with an ever-changing palette. Tracks “Funeral,” “Bad Dreams,” “Are You Even Real,” and “Guilty,” are all dripping in Swim’s signature swag mixed with sunshine. For Swims, this album was a creative catharsis, a way to reflect on his personal life and get vulnerable with the world. The singer is unapologetically himself and while we might drown ourselves in his music, we’ll also be saved by it. 4.5 stars -Marisa Patwa
Alessia Cara may have broken out in 2015 with “Here,” but 2025 is her year. It’s clear Cara was inspired by the grooves and melodies of the 1960s and 1970s when crafting her 4th studio album—It’s a blend of R&B, pop and bossa nova. “Dead Man” gives us major Amy Winehouse vibes with her jazzy vocals and trumpet tunes. In “Isn’t It Obvious,” John Mayor provides us with an unexpected guitar solo, against a simple and beautiful production. Cara employs the guitar again on “Fire,” a sweet, slow burn. Her use of instruments to help highlight her voice, from dazzling keys to chaotic horns, is intelligently iconic. “Run Run” is a raspy wonder, while “Drive” is goosebump inducing with its silky harmonies. My favorite: “Slow Motion,” an R&B infused track with Sunday morning vibes. She has a powerhouse of a voice, but strips it back in this album, foregoing her belting for blues. Cara is careful what music she puts out into the world, protective of her artistry. Listening to Love & Hyperbole is like hearing a thousand sunsets—no cap. 4 stars -Marisa Patwa
Oh! The Ocean
The Wombats
The Wombats' “Oh! The Ocean” is an easy listen, combining a dreamy hypnosis with dancing in your seat. The sonic playground is produced with a colorful balance of driving indie rock washing up on a modern electronic beach. As a guitarist, singer and producer, I find what stands out is the detail—expansive reverbs, layered octaves and harmonies, dynamic shifts and a pleasant, if not unique, voice that give each track a consistent energy but maintaining a distinct identity. A standout track, "I Love America but She Hates Me," exemplifies the band’s ability to mix ear-worm hooks with social commentary. The guitars lean into a punchy, post-punk edge, complemented by heavier rhythms and synth flourishes that elevate the track’s impact. Lyrically, this album explores themes of disillusionment, nostalgia, and accountability wrapped in the band’s signature melancholy waves. While “Oh! The Ocean” maintains The Wombats’ upbeat indie-dance DNA, there’s a deeper emotional weight to these songs, with a deliberate, organic tide. The result is an album that feels like a late-night drive--tapping the wheel to the beat--with the journey as the only destination. 4 out of 5 celestial units.

This beer poured a darker straw-colored beer. I am a fan of the wheat beer and this one did not disappoint. This beer was easy to drink and I enjoyed the large pint can. The artwork seemed a little odd and I was expecting a mediocre novelty beer, but I was wrong. It has a nice wheat flavor and a light sweetness to it. I was impressed and glad to see a Hoosier brewery putting out a good product.
A thick white head forms on this hazy wheat beer and never totally evaporates. A generous amount of wheat fills the nose, along with some carbonation. Similarly, the initial tasting of the beer contains a good dose of wheat, along with some banana flavors that remain in the long finish. People who enjoy wheat beers will want to drink this, especially during the hot summer months. Pair it with lighter dishes like seafood or salads.
This beer poured a cloudy brown color with good carbonation. The bourbon flavor was actually pretty light and only detected in the finish. I did enjoy the 8.2 ABV and liked this one beer more than other bourbon influenced beer. Some have such a heavy flavor, you may as well just drink regular bourbon. This was on the lighter side. It is very filling but still a nice complex beer.
A thick white head crowns this amber ale when poured into a traditional English pub glass and disappears slowly. A combination of sweet malt and bourbon dominates the scent profile. Likewise, malt and bourbon come through with the first sip, with the bourbon flavors staying in the extended finish. People who enjoy hearty beers need to try this. Pair it with foods such as barbecued beef, Parmesan cheese and desserts like chocolate and ice cream.
