SPRING CONCERT & EVENT GUIDE

Charley Crockett a classic in the making

Charley Crockett, a native of the southernmost tip of Texas, has described himself and his music as idiosyncratic. I’d say so; it took about a decade of honing his "Gulf & Western" sound—a fusion of country, blues, soul, Cajun, and R&B—for his industry and audience to catch up with his retro, easygoing, but contemplative style. Imagine if Waylon Jennings and Buck Owens got teleported with Jimmy Buffett and came out a completely unique entity like Seth Brundle and that fly. His music is characterized by a deep, soulful voice with lyrics that often reflect his personal journey and the richness of American roots music… and it is coming your way in May.

Born of an itinerant lifestyle, Crockett's early years were marked by constant movement, which exposed him to a variety of musical styles and cultures. This melting-pot upbringing is evident in his mosaic sound, blending traditional country with elements of blues and soul, channeling them into an authentic storybook and soundscape. His 15th album, "Lonesome Drifter," marks a significant milestone in his career. In a recent interview, he shared insights into that journey, stating, "Ten years ago, there was no place for me in the broader business. Now, the genre's enormous commercial

success has created space for more idiosyncratic artists." (L.A. Times).

Crockett's path has not been without challenges. His early life included mostly street performances and an occasional run-in with the law. One such impromptu performance began when officers stopped him for a window tint violation and smelled weed. A search turned up a guitar in the trunk, so Charley thought it would be a good idea to demonstrate that he was just a humble songwriter on his way to make a record deal in Nashville. But that wasn’t the only intended dealing that night as over 6 pounds of marijuana was pulled from beneath the guitar case. This checkered past, however, resonates with audiences tired of bland rehashed industry pop, and critics have taken note.

Crockett has already made an impact on the country music scene. The Los Angeles Times recently highlighted his emergence as a significant figure, stating, "The prolific singer and songwriter from Texas is about to make his major-label debut—with his 15th album!”

He has spoken of a deepening artistic maturity. Starting with his self-released debut A Stolen Jewel in 2015, Crockett’s early work was characterized by a raw,

independent spirit. He then moved to the Son of Davy label, where he released In the Night (2016) and Lonesome as a Shadow (2018). Crockett co-produced his most recent album, Lonesome Drifter on the Thirty Tigers label with Shooter Jennings. Throughout his career, Crockett has shared the stage with and collaborated in the studio with prominent artists like Willie Nelson, Shooter Jennings, and John Prine. The influence of these greats, coupled with a love of Bill Withers and soul artists like him, has resulted in projects that have helped solidify his place in the music world as a true artist, born and reborn on the path he has paved.

Fans in Evansville, Indiana will have the opportunity to experience Crockett's dynamic performance firsthand. He is scheduled to take the stage at the Aiken Theatre in the Old National Events Plaza on May 7, 2025, at 7:30 PM. This concert promises to be as diverse and interesting as the man himself. As one commenter on an NPR Tiny Desk performance observed, “Folks, please go see Charley…he closed the last show by unplugging the guitar and using the cable to lasso the mic stand.” I sense a future classic in the making.

Attention, Star Wars fans! The force is strong in Evansville this May as the legendary Star Wars: A New Hope comes to the big screen at the Victory Theatre for two nights only—May 2 and 3. Whether you’re a lifelong Jedi or a newcomer to the saga, this is your chance to experience the film that started it all, complete with John Williams’ iconic score that still gives fans chills decades later.

A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

If you somehow haven’t seen A New Hope (we won’t judge—much), here’s a quick refresher: The film follows young Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as he embarks on a journey that will change the galaxy forever. After stumbling upon a distress call hidden in a droid, Luke teams up with the wise Obi-Wan Kenobi

A

(Alec Guinness) and the charming Han Solo (Harrison Ford). Their mission? To rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and help the Rebel Alliance take down the Empire’s fearsome Death Star. Along the way, they face off against Darth Vader and prove that even the smallest spark of hope can ignite a rebellion.

The Soundtrack That Defined a Generation

One of the most unforgettable elements of A New Hope is its music, composed by the legendary John Williams. His sweeping, cinematic score set the gold standard for film music, giving us some of the most recognizable themes in movie history. From the triumphant opening fanfare to the chilling Imperial March (even though that one technically debuted in The Empire Strikes Back), Williams’ music has become just as iconic as the characters

themselves, winning five Academy Awards and racking up more Oscar nominations than almost anyone in Hollywood history.

Williams’ influence extends far beyond Star Wars. His work spans generations, from Jaws and Jurassic Park to Harry Potter and Indiana Jones. Whether you realize it or not, his music has been the soundtrack to some of the most memorable cinematic moments of all time. Hearing his compositions in a grand theater setting? Absolutely worth it.

Why You Can’t Miss This Event

Seeing A New Hope in a historic venue like the Victory Theatre is an experience every Star Wars fan should have. The theater’s classic architecture combined with the thrilling visuals and music of Star Wars will transport you straight into that galaxy far, far away. Whether you’re introducing the film to a new generation or revisiting an old favorite, it’s the perfect opportunity to relive the magic on the big screen.

Grab your lightsabers, dust off your Jedi robes, and get ready for an unforgettable night. May the Force be with you—always!

Creative

BILLY TWYMON Currents

Billy Twymon, artist, musician, and founder of the Twymon Gallery on Lincoln Avenue is painting a vibrant future for arts in the neighborhood and in Evansville as a whole.

Twymon is a transplant to Evansville. Originally from Michigan, he spent years as a bakery and coffee shop owner in Berkeley and Venice Beach, California, before relocating to Evansville. He’s the creative sort, the keep-busy sort, the always-lookingahead sort. You might think Southern Indiana in the 1990’s would have paled

beside multi-culti California, but Twymon felt right at home.

“When I came to Evansville, I fell in love with the town aesthetically,” he said, “and I was at a point in my life when I wanted to slow down. I opened a coffee shop called Java Beans Downtown. Still, my intentions were not to be here all that long – that was 30 years ago.”

Twymon saw a lot of talent in the area, but didn’t see a lot of cohesiveness among artists. Improving the situation became a challenge he set for himself.

His first step, 16 years ago, was to open the Twymon Gallery, now in Old Town at 1015 Lincoln Avenue.

“I was motivated to open a gallery because I had entrepreneurial experience, and I thought it could be done. With my talents, I’d figure out a way to market it. The next step was to make it available to people who weren’t necessarily fortunate enough to be

able to promote themselves.”

He welcomed new and emerging artists and made sure to showcase diverse talents that might not have been picked up in a more traditional gallery setting.

“Most artists don’t have a fixed income or a lot of disposable income, especially if you’re young and trying to make a living at art,” Twymon said. “When I represent an artist’s work, I can come up with small stipends if someone needs to have work framed or needs canvas. That’s been important for me and the artists. I do a standard 50/50 split commission on sales, but I’ll take a cut on my end to make sure the artists get paid at their price point. When we sponsor an artist, we do the promoting for them; we host exhibits for them.”

Inside the two-story gallery, you’ll find contemporary pieces of all sizes in materials from oil and acrylic paintings to mixed media, ceramics, fiber, glass, assemblage

Billy Twymon, artist and owner of the Twymon Gallery.
The red sign makes Twymon Gallery easy to find on Lincoln Avenue in Olde Towne.

and more. The gallery even has a sound studio on the top floor, where music and podcasts are recorded.

Even after years of success with the gallery, Twymon continues to stride forward with his vision of bringing artists together and making Evansville an arts hub. In the past year and a half, he and eight other board members have constructed the Community Arts Collaborative (CAC), a 501c3 initiative that will use art as a means of positively impacting the community on a physical and mental level.

“We want CAC to be a wide-open platform for bringing in professionals like

psychologists or art and music therapists,” Twymon said. “I feel like stress can be a good thing, depending on how we manage that stress. I’ve been able to successfully manage my stress through my art and creativity; I understand how it can work to strengthen that foundation. We’ve already been lining up some projects with CAPE (the Community Action Program of Evansville), and now that we have the 501c3, we have a legitimate calling card and can go out and attach with other non-profit organizations that are thinking the same way.”

The Significance & Celebration of EASTER

WITH CRISTINA MAUK

Easter is one of the most significant holidays in the world, celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike. For Christians, it marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as described in the New Testament. Easter holds profound religious meaning for believers and is associated with various customs and traditions that have evolved over time.

The Religious Meaning of Easter

For Christians, Easter is the foundation of their faith. The resurrection of Jesus signifies victory over sin and death, affirming the belief in eternal life. According to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, buried in a tomb, and rose from the dead three days later on Easter Sunday. This event is seen as proof of Jesus’ divinity and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

Easter is the culmination of Holy Week, which begins with Palm Sunday, marking Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, and Good Friday remembers the crucifixion. Easter Sunday, therefore, is a day of celebration and joy, symbolizing renewal, hope, and salvation.

Easter Traditions Around the World

While Easter is deeply rooted in religion, it also includes many cultural traditions that vary across the globe. Some of these customs have pagan influences, while others come from local folklore.

Easter Eggs and the Easter Bunny

One of the most recognizable Easter symbols is the egg, which represents fertility and new life. The tradition of decorating eggs dates back to early Christian communities in Mesopotamia, where eggs were dyed red to symbolize Christ’s blood. Over time, the practice evolved into the modern Easter egg hunt, where children search for eggs filled with candy or toys.

The Easter Bunny is another well-known figure. Its origins trace back to German folklore, where a hare called “Osterhase” would lay colored eggs for children. This tradition was brought to America by German immigrants and became a beloved part of Easter celebrations.

Easter Feasts and Foods

Easter is often celebrated with a festive meal, and many countries have their own traditional dishes. Lamb is a common choice, symbolizing Jesus as the “Lamb of God.” In Italy, “Colomba di Pasqua,” a dove-shaped cake, is a popular Easter dessert. In Greece, “Tsoureki,” a sweet, braided bread, is enjoyed, while in the UK, hot cross buns—spiced buns marked with a cross—are a staple.

In the U.S., Easter meals often feature ham, roasted vegetables, and desserts like carrot cake. Family gatherings and communal meals reinforce the holiday’s themes of togetherness and gratitude.

Easter Celebrations Across the Globe

Easter is celebrated in various ways around the world, reflecting the religious and cultural backgrounds of each region.

• United States and Canada: In North America, Easter blends religious observances with secular traditions like egg hunts, parades, and family gatherings. The White House Easter Egg Roll, where children race eggs with wooden spoons, is a notable tradition.

• United Kingdom: The UK celebrates Easter with Passion Plays, egg rolling competitions, and Morris dancing, a traditional folk dance performed during the season.

• Italy: Easter in Italy is marked by solemn religious observances, including processions and masses. In Florence, the

“Scoppio del Carro” (Explosion of the Cart) features a decorated cart filled with fireworks, symbolizing a good harvest.

• Spain: Spain’s Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of the most elaborate Easter celebrations, with processions, religious floats, and marching bands in cities like Seville and Málaga.

• Greece: Greek Orthodox Easter features a midnight Resurrection Service and a feast with lamb and red-dyed eggs. The celebration often includes fireworks and other festivities.

• Latin America: In Latin American countries, Easter is known as “Pascua,” and celebrations include religious processions, reenactments of the Passion of Christ, and feasts.

Modern Commercialization of Easter

Like many holidays, Easter has become commercialized, especially in Western countries. Retailers sell Easter decorations, chocolates, and gifts long before the holiday arrives. Chocolate eggs, marshmallow candies like Peeps, and Easter baskets have become symbols of the celebration. While this commercialization has made Easter more widely celebrated, some argue it detracts from its religious meaning.

The Deeper Meaning of Easter

Despite the commercialization, Easter remains a time of reflection, renewal, and hope. For Christians, it’s a reminder of Christ’s resurrection and the promise of salvation. For non-religious individuals, it serves as a celebration of spring, renewal, and family. Ultimately, Easter’s message of rebirth and hope transcends religious and cultural boundaries, making it a universal celebration of life and new beginnings.

Spring Home Maintenance Tips

TO KEEP YOUR HOME IN TOP SHAPE

Spring is here, and it’s time to give your home the attention it needs after the harsh winter months. A little spring maintenance can save you from costly repairs later. Here are some quick tips to get your home ready for the warmer season:

Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear debris from gutters to ensure water flows freely. Check that downspouts direct water away from your foundation.

Inspect the Roof: Look for damaged or missing shingles and address any issues before spring showers arrive.

Check Windows and Doors for Drafts: Feel for drafts and reseal gaps around windows and doors with fresh caulk or weather stripping to improve energy efficiency.

Service Your HVAC: Have your air conditioning system checked and change filters to ensure it’s ready for summer.

Test Outdoor Faucets and Sprinklers: Turn on faucets and inspect for leaks. Check sprinkler heads for any damage to keep your lawn looking great.

Spruce Up Landscaping: Trim dead branches, pull weeds, and add mulch. Plant flowers to boost curb appeal.

Power Wash Exterior: Clean siding, driveways, and patios with a power wash to remove grime and freshen up your home’s appearance.

Organize the Garage: Declutter and sweep out dust to create a neat, tidy space.

Check Detectors: Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure safety.

These simple tasks will keep your home in great shape for the season ahead. Enjoy the sunshine!

Recently, a local bar made the news for neglecting to pay their music licensing fees. I thought it would be timely to discuss what that means and whether Publishing Rights Organizations (PROs) are extorting club owners or defending art. There are three big ones (just like in Total Recall…wink) compensating performers and writers for the art they create. They are ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc), and SESAC (Society of European Stage Authors and Composers).

It’s a pretty polarizing topic. Some musicians fairly claim, “If you are going to use someone’s art, you need to be paying for it, even if it is for personal enjoyment but especially if it's for financial

gain.” Meanwhile, bar, restaurant and other establishment owners are rightfully asserting that the fees are exorbitant and don’t seem to be based on any structured scale. In my…let’s say, “poking around on the internet”,—I think “research” is a bit lofty considering the way we get our info these days—I noticed the common complaint of lack of transparency. One sure fire way to begin sniffing for tidbits like misuse of power is to get a whiff of secrecy.

ASCAP and BMI are non-profit organizations and are required to disclose profits, losses and distribution. For example, in 2024, ASCAP reported gross revenue of over $1.8 billion dollars with nearly $1.7 billion of that distributed to artists. SESAC is for-profit and owned by Blackstone, a private equity firm and, as of this writing, the most recent data I could find was a 2016 revenue of $450 million with no disclosure of payout amount. But the real question at hand is how they determine who pays and how much. Venues rather than artists are responsible for securing public performance licensing with amounts varying from $250$2000 per year. Factors on pricing include size, occupancy, number of nights for live AND recorded music, and whether a cover charge is collected. There are, in fact, an insane number of factors with seemingly arbitrary variables like “if the bar is under 3750 square feet” then X amount is required.

(“Ah! X amount. That’s very good, isn’t it?” -Navin Johnson).

So, if the commodities are food, alcohol, and music (disregarding sports for the sake of simplicity), why would an establishment balk at paying for one of its draws over the others? Several reasons come to mind: lack of fairness, lack of transparency, paying each organization separately seems daunting and excessive, the performing musicians are already costing money, and it’s very easy to just not pay. What are they going to do, send spies? Yes. If an establishment gets flagged for non-payment and does not respond, PROs have been known to send field operatives to calculate violations. Those violations can have expensive consequences. Up to $10,000 per infraction.

Ultimately, I think a highly significant reason, if not THE reason, is this: music feels free. In today’s world, you can jump on YouTube (which pays for licensing BTW. Last year, a deadlined agreement was not reached with SESAC and all Adele and Kendrick Lamar and thousands of others were pulled) or get a Bit Torrent client and get hard drives full of content in minutes. The answers, in my humble opinion, are the same as in most adversarial situations— compromise and fairness. PROs have gotten too powerful and litigious, making bar owners justifiably stubborn and defiant. In my years as a working-class musician, I have learned this much: You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need.

Thank you for any and all support you give to the Independent artists of the world!Lindsey Williams

Let’s be honest. Your digital feeds are a torrent. A ceaseless scroll of fleeting impressions, where your message battles for a nanosecond of attention. It’s a race against algorithms. Algorithms drown messages, turning everything into a gamble. You’re competing with machines, and your message is swallowed by relentless digital noise. But there’s an alternative, a refuge from the digital storm: the enduring power of print.

Now, imagine this:

The glossy richness of premium paper. The soft, gentle tap of a magazine landing on a coffee table. The unhurried turning of a page, unlike the swipe of a screen. This isn’t a passive experience; it’s an engagement. It’s not about being a spectator but being a part of the story. This immersive experience translates directly into tangible benefits for your brand.

Print ads create a space for mindful participation. They invite contemplation, not a superficial scan. They linger, not vanish, as a tangible representation of your brand’s commitment to quality.

This is where print excels, in ways that digital pixels cannot replicate:

PRINTED IN A DIGITAL BLUR, CLARITY REMAINS

with Julie Caywood

Credibility & Tangible Connection: Printed advertisements establish a sense of credibility and foster a tangible connection, allowing readers to physically engage with your brand through the texture of the paper and the clarity of the imagery.

Targeted Reach & Longer Shelf Life:

Targeted reach and a longer shelf life ensure your advertisement reaches a specific, engaged audience and maintains visibility and impact over an extended period.

Reduced Distraction: Reduced distraction provides a moment of uninterrupted engagement, a rare and luxurious experience in today’s digital landscape filled with pop-ups and notifications.

Stunning Visuals & Focused Engagement:

Print offers stunning visual impact through high-resolution printing, creating lasting impressions and focused engagement that cuts through the clutter of online noise. The foundational “Rule of 7” in marketing suggests that potential customers typically need to encounter a message about seven times before acting. This principle underscores the lasting effectiveness of print advertising, Unlike the fleeting nature of digital flashes, a magazine ad is designed to

plant a seed, nurturing it through repetition and familiarity—a process crucial in our instant-gratification.

Recent insights further affirm print’s lasting value. A 2024 study by the News/Media Alliance found that 61% of U.S. adults say they find print ads in newspapers and magazines trustworthy, underscoring print’s enduring reliability. This trust, combined with print’s ability to deliver consistent messaging, allows your message to resonate, building recognition and loyalty over time. With each encounter, a deeper connection is forged, driving action and solidifying your brand’s presence.

A magazine ad might not trigger a same-day purchase, but it’s a piece of a longer game— establishing a connection that pays off down the line. Quality—whether it’s a product, a brand, or a message—doesn’t always scream for attention right away. It builds quietly, and consistency is what makes it stick. If you keep showing up with a clear, authentic message, people eventually start to listen. It’s not about instant gratification, but about cultivating a lasting relationship.

In a world of fleeting digital moments, cultivate lasting impressions with the enduring power of print.

IT’S NOT ABOUT BEING A SPECTATOR BUT BEING A PART OF THE STORY.

MONTHLY FOOD REVIEW WITH BRIAN BUXTON

SAŹON Y FUEGO

This month’s Taste of Evansville features the newest and most unique restaurant in Warrick County - Saźon y Fuego. Translating to "Seasoning and Fire,” this new venture is the sister restaurant to Pangea Kitchen at 111 S. Green River Road, and 2nd Language and Pangea Pizzeria, both at 401 NW 2nd St. in the former Nabisco building. All 4 are under the Pangea Holdings family of restaurants, owned by Randy Hobson. Although Hobson’s professional background was not in the culinary world, he has quickly become well known for his passion and commitment to the authenticity and quality of his dishes, thoughtfully sourced ingredients, and plating / presentation that borders on art. Even the décor of his restaurants is thoughtfully and purposefully curated to provide an experience to his customers.

The menu at Saźon (pronounced “Sasson,” with the y pronounced as “Ē”) offers authentically inspired, elevated dishes from South America, Central America, Mexico and even some from the Caribbean. The Executive chef is Alexis Campos who graduated from culinary school in Lima, Peru. Common ingredients in their dishes are corn, potatoes, cacao, chiles, beans,

seafood, beef, chicken and lamb. The menu features housemade tortillas ground from local organic blue and yellow corn. Traditional Mexican molé is made in house as well. Ceviche, Arroz Mariscos and Peruvian pastas are top selling dishes from from Peru. Plantains and Arepas are from Venezuela. Even their coffee is brewed from single origin, direct trade beans from the Fanzenda Do Salto Farm in Sul De Minas, Brasil.

The proteins at Saźon are prepared on the region's only live fire charcoal oven, which offers the ability to provide a perfect sear on meats, as well as much more control over the cooking process. These ovens can be used for a wide range of cooking techniques, including searing, grilling, and even smoking, which imparts a depth of flavor difficult to replicate with any other cooking methods.

The employees at Saźon y Fuego hail from Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Guatemala and draw on the local cuisines of each. And Hobson himself regularly travels the US and internationally to research and sample cuisines, and stay up-to-date with the latest food trends. All of the staff involved in Hobsons restaurants are passionate

about food, and it is reflected in every aspect. From the décor and ambiance, the attention to service, the cocktail program and the dedication to providing authentic dishes to their customers. Even if that means taking hours to days of preparation – their molé takes up to 8 hours to complete, and the Clear to Cuba cocktail takes a full 3 days to filter and prepare the ingredients. There are no shortcuts taken in any aspect of the operation.

I’ve enjoyed dinner and drinks here several times since they opened in October of 2024, and have never been disappointed with the food or service. Some favorite dishes I’d recommend are the Ceviche, Chicharrónes, Arepas, Pollo con Molé, Picanha with Chimichurri, the Bollo Pelon dumplings and the Cuban Ropa Vieja. All of their desserts are amazing, but the chocolate mole cake and the passion fruit mousse are standouts. If you imbibe, don’t miss out on their fantastic cocktail program, which I would rate as one of the top 4 in the area. Their wine list is focused and thoughtful with excellent

referred to as “The Cave,” available for a private intimate dining experience for up to 12 people.

Their hours of operation are TuesdayThursday: 4pm - 9pm, Friday & Saturday: 4pm – 10pm, closed Sunday & Monday. A Happy Hour menu is available from 4pm – 5pm. A large private lot provides parking. You can contact the restaurant by calling the number below, or on Facebook @tastesazon

UNCLE TED’S JUST DANG GOOD FOOD: FROM CONSTRUCTION TO CULINARY SUCCESS

When Ted Denning started his food truck, Uncle Ted’s Just Dang Good Food, in April 2018, he never imagined how quickly his life would change. After spending 24 years in construction, Denning found himself facing a major challenge. Three back surgeries forced him to leave behind the career he had built. But instead of letting this challenge hold him back, he found a new path forward, one that combined his love of food with his wife’s catering expertise. As food trucks started gaining popularity in his area, the couple decided to take the plunge, and it worked.

The name “Uncle Ted” came naturally. “I come from a very large family, with a lot of nieces and nephews,” Denning explains. “A lot of people call me Uncle Ted as a nickname.” And just like that, the brand was born. Since launching, Uncle Ted’s Just Dang Good Food has become a well-known name, with customers eagerly checking his Facebook page to see where he’ll be next.

Denning’s culinary roots trace back to his mother, who not only taught him how to cook but also instilled a sense of discipline in the kitchen. “She let us work alongside her, and then by ourselves as long as we cleaned up our own mess!” he recalls with a laugh. That early experience turned into a passion, one that customers can taste in every meal he serves.

Like many new business owners, Denning underestimated the demand. “We were a lot busier than I had anticipated,” he admits. Serving meals at plant sites meant keeping up with heavy foot traffic, and figuring out how much food to order each week became a challenge. Thankfully, his wife’s catering background proved invaluable, helping them streamline operations and keep customers satisfied.

While Denning updates his menu with daily specials, his signature dish remains the double bacon cheeseburger, a jaw-dropping sandwich stacked with two-thirds of a pound of beef and six strips of bacon on a premium bun. “People are always shocked when they open it up,” he says. “A lot of them say, ‘If I had known it was this big, I would have gotten a single!’ But they’re smiling when they say it.”

In addition to burgers, Denning also serves comfort food like mini meatloaves and chicken and dumplings, often as part of his rotating daily specials. He sources as many ingredients locally as possible, mainly through CRS, after another supplier, Farm Boy, closed.

Running a food truck isn’t without its challenges. Being away from a permanent kitchen means running out of ingredients can be a real risk,

and equipment failures can shut things down unexpectedly. Despite his initial doubts, Denning has built a loyal following by focusing on quality and consistency. “If you bought one of my sandwiches five years ago, it’s the exact same sandwich today,” he says proudly. That reliability, coupled with word-of-mouth marketing, has made his truck a local favorite. Denning’s biggest piece of advice? Do your research. “Just because a food truck is killing it in one location doesn’t mean that product will go over well in your area,” he warns. Understanding local tastes and preferences is key. He also stresses the importance of consistency. Once you find something that works, stick with it.

The biggest surprise for him was the sheer workload. “Coming from construction, I thought this would be so easy… Boy, was I wrong,” he laughs. “You are on the go and thinking about it constantly. It is not a get-richquick kind of thing. It is a JOB! But it is a very rewarding job if you do it right.”

In a business that demands long hours, constant planning, and adaptability, Denning has proven that hard work and a passion for food can turn a tough situation into a thriving enterprise. His advice for new food truck owners? “Get into a groove and don’t sweat the small stuff.” Sounds like a recipe for success.

See you down the road!

Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure

I don’t know about you but I love a good ol’ classic peanut butter and jelly (especially on my sourdough bread)! I equally love chocolate anything. I figured why not combine both and make a delicious, sweet treat that I can pop out of the freezer when a craving hits! This recipe is very versatile. You can switch out the percentage of chocolate chips, switch out the peanut butter for almond butter, and lastly switch out strawberry fruit spread for raspberry.

CLEAN BITE life

CHOCOLATE

PB&J BITES

Serving Size: About 18 Bites

Ingredients:

• 350 g. or 2 c. of your favorite chocolate chips (I used Ghirardelli semi sweet)

• 66 g. or ¼ c. unsweetened peanut butter (just peanuts and salt)

• 77 g. or ¼ c. strawberry fruit spread (I used St. Dalfour)

• 4 g. or about 1 tsp. of avocado oil or any neutral oil

Directions:

1. Using a silicone mold of choice, spray the mold with a neutral cooking spray. I used avocado oil spray. If you do not have a silicone mold you can use a muffin tin, and they will make about 9 instead. You can line the muffin tin with parchment cupcake liners.

2. Put the chocolate chips and 1 tsp. of neutral oil in a microwave safe bowl and cook at 30-second intervals until you reach a smooth melted consistency. Stir generously in between 30-second intervals.

3. Once the chocolate is melted pour a small layer at the bottom of whatever mold or pan you chose. Pop in the freezer for 10 minutes.

FOR MORE RECIPES OR MEAL IDEAS YOU CAN FOLLOW LINDSAY RASURE ON INSTAGRAM: @CLEANBITELIFE OR HER FACEBOOK GROUP: CLEAN BITE LIFE

4. After 10 minutes take them back out of the freezer and add a small dollop of peanut butter and fruit spread. Try to leave a little chocolate showing around the perimeter of each bite so the final chocolate layer can make a seal. Pop in the freezer for another 10 minutes.

5. At this point you may have to reheat your chocolate again to get it pourable again. Once the peanut butter and fruit spread layer has slightly hardened add the remaining chocolate to the tops of the bites. Put back in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.

6. Once the bites have hardened take them out of the mold or pan and let rest for 2-3 minutes before consuming. I like to store mine in the freezer and get a couple out when I want a sweet treat! Enjoy!

The Power of Renovation:

Improving Function, Style, and Value

Renovating and updating your home is more than just an aesthetic decision; it’s an investment in the value, functionality, and comfort of your living space. Over time, homes experience wear and tear, and certain elements can become outdated or inefficient. Renovation offers an opportunity to breathe new life into your living environment while providing longterm benefits that can positively impact your lifestyle and finances.

One of the primary reasons homeowners choose to renovate is to increase the market value of their property. Whether you plan to sell in the near future or not, a wellmaintained, modernized home is appealing to potential buyers. Outdated kitchens, bathrooms, or roofing systems can detract from the value of your home. By investing in renovations—such as upgrading appliances, adding energy-efficient systems, or enhancing curb appeal—you make your home more attractive to buyers, which could lead to a higher resale value.

As your family grows and your needs evolve, so too should your living space. Renovating allows you to adjust the layout or functionality of your home to better suit your current lifestyle. This could mean opening up a cramped kitchen to make it more functional, adding a home office space, or creating additional storage. Updating older systems, such as plumbing or electrical, not only improves functionality but can also prevent costly repairs down the road. Additionally, replacing old windows, doors, and insulation can lead to better energy efficiency, reducing utility bills and making your home more comfortable year-round.

Over time, your personal taste may change, or you may simply want to create a space that better reflects who you are. Renovating allows you to tailor your home to your preferences, whether it’s through updated flooring, fresh paint, or incorporating new design trends. A home that feels personalized and comfortable contributes significantly to your overall well-being. The physical environment directly impacts mood, productivity, and relaxation, so creating a space that suits your style and needs can improve your quality of life.

Homes naturally degrade over time, and outdated features may pose safety risks. Structural issues, old wiring, mold, and unsafe flooring can be hidden hazards. Renovating your home allows you to identify and address these problems before they become dangerous or lead to larger, more expensive issues. For example, replacing a leaking roof or fixing a damaged foundation early can save you from the headache and expense of major repairs later.

In conclusion, updating and renovating your home offers a multitude of benefits, from increasing its market value and improving functionality to enhancing comfort and sustainability. Whether it’s a must do for safety reasons or you just want a change, investing in your home through carefully thought out renovations can make your living experience more enjoyable and protect your investment for years to come.

COMEDY & CURIOSITIES

WITH DANNY BROWNING

BREAKING NEWS: THE EASTER BUNNY WILL BE CHARGING AN EGG SURCHARGE

April is a weird month. One minute, you’re picking out pastel-colored outfits and planning Easter brunch, the next, you’re staring at your tax return wondering if selling a kidney counts as “additional income.” (Turns out, it’s very illegal.)

Easter is fun. I’ve always been confused about the Easter Bunny. Who decided a giant rabbit should be in charge of eggs? Was there a meeting where someone said, “Kids like bunnies, kids like eggs! Boom!” and everybody just went along with it? Meanwhile, real rabbits are out here doing normal rabbit things, completely unaware that their holiday mascot is running some underground egg distribution ring like a springtime version of Santa Claus high on Easter grass.

And speaking of eggs, enough with these silly chickens having the flu. We need a break. At this point, hiding eggs for an Easter egg hunt is just an excuse to make your kids do security detail for your groceries. “Alright, Timmy, you better find all 12 eggs because that was $7.99, and we’re having omelets tomorrow.” Maybe it’s time for the IRS to introduce an “egg surcharge” tax. They’re already taking most of our money this month, they might as well make it themed.

Taxes. The true spirit of the month. Nothing humbles a person faster than doing their own taxes. I start confident, thinking, I’ve got this. Then, three minutes into TurboTax, I’m questioning every life choice I’ve ever made. “Wait, do I own a farm? Why is this even a question?” The only people who understand taxes are accountants and whoever writes those IRS instructions that make me feel like I failed middle school English.

And if that’s not enough, April also comes with the ever-charming April showers. Nothing like unpredictable rain to keep you slipping in your flip-flops. You leave the house in sunglasses, and by lunchtime, you’re running through a parking lot, using a grocery bag as a makeshift umbrella. Not to mention, you never know what it will be like in the Midwest. That rain might turn to snow and then we’re all freaking out like a kid who dropped his jelly beans.

So good luck this April! I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that this is National Humor Month! With that, may your tax refund be big, your breakfast food reasonably priced, and may you LAUGH all the way into May.

BLACK MIRROR- SEASON 7

The mind-bending dystopian world of Black Mirror is back to confuse, inspire, entertain and break our hearts. As with each season, the star-studded guest appearance list is outrageous, with Emma Corrin, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Will Poulter, Tracee Ellis Ross, Rashida Jones, Peter Capaldi and Awkwafina tapped in. The most highly anticipated episode of the new season features a follow-up to the critically acclaimed season 4 premiere, “USS Callister” in 2017. The dark and twisted sci-fi piece with Star Trek bones, is a series fan favorite. We’ll see Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson and Billy Magnussen all reprise their characters from that lauded space-horror episode. As an anthology series, Black Mirror forces its viewers to contemplate complex questions surrounding technology and its interplay in our lives. As the show’s tagline goes: “The future is now, and it’s dark.”

YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORSSEASON 1

Don Draper is going full Fun with Dick and Jane (2005). Jon Ham dips his toes into the suburban crime television waters, as affluent Andrew “Coop” Cooper. Unlike Nancy Botwin’s weed-dealing mom or Walter White’s meth cooking dad, Coop is turning to theft. Getting axed from his hedge fund manager job, coupled with his contemptuous divorce, he is driven to steal from his rich neighbors. It’s also a ploy to help bankroll his jobless and extravagant lifestyle. Ham is flanked by two strong female leads, Amanda Peet as his disappointed ex-wife and Olivia Munn as his suspicious girlfriend, both of which grow weary of his mounting lies. Showrunner, director and executive producer, Jonathan Topper must have done something right, as the crime dramedy has already been greenlit for a season two before season one episodes started airing. Sounds like Ham is playing double duty in this scene-stealing role.

THE MURDER OF TRENESA ROBERTS: A FAMILY’S SEARCH FOR JUSTICE

Trenesa Roberts was the heart of her family. Every Sunday, you could find her surrounded by loved ones, sharing meals and making memories in her mother’s home. Family was everything to Trenesa, and it’s hard to believe that a woman who brought so much joy to those around her could be taken from them so suddenly.

On December 10, 2018, Trenesa’s life was tragically cut short outside her new home in Lehigh Acres, Florida. It was an ordinary morning when she woke up, prepared for work, and left her home—only to be shot down in cold blood before she could even make it to her car. Her body was found just hours later, lying in the street. It was a senseless act of violence that left her family reeling and searching for answers.

Born and raised in the Fort Myers area, Trenesa was a woman who valued hard work and the simple joys of life. She didn’t need much—just her family, her job as a bus attendant with the Lee County School District, and the occasional shopping trip with her sister, Sharlonda.

Trenesa was known for her smile, her infectious personality, and her love of fashion. “She loved her New York & Company clothes,” her sister recalls with a smile. Trenesa’s four daughters were her world. Though she never married, she found immense joy in raising her children and providing for them, hoping to give them the best future possible. It’s hard for her daughters, now young adults, to imagine a life without their mother, whose dedication and strength were an inspiration to them all.

But on that fateful day in December, Trenesa was taken. Her death was not a robbery gone wrong or a random act of violence. There were no signs that the killer wanted anything from her. In fact, nothing was stolen from her at the scene, and there were no attempts to rob her home or car. Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing—and it still remains a mystery.

What makes this case even more haunting is that Trenesa was a private person. She didn’t involve herself in drama, and she rarely let anyone close to her home. It’s baffling to her family, because why anyone would want to harm her. But one thing is clear: Trenesa didn’t deserve this. Her family hasn’t stopped searching for answers since that day.

Her sister, Sharlonda, now works at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, driven by a desire to bring justice for her sister. She’s dedicated to finding the person responsible for taking Trenesa’s life, and she’s not alone in this fight. Over the years, the Roberts family has partnered with Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers to raise awareness about Trenesa’s case, putting up billboards and posting regularly on social media, hoping someone, anyone, will come forward with information.

Trenesa’s death left a hole in the hearts of her family, and they honor her every Sunday by visiting her grave. Each visit is a reminder of the woman they loved so deeply. As her sister puts it, “I just want to make sure people see her face.”

Unfortunately, not all cases like this have a happy ending. Unsolved murders, like Trenesa’s, haunt families for years. As we reflect on the cases that remain unsolved in our communities, we must ask: Who knows the truth? And what will it take to bring those responsible to justice?

Snail Mucin: The Slimy Secret to Glowing Skin

When I asked my online buddies about a good topic for this month’s beauty article, the topic of “snail mucin” came up. This one is for you Arli, because I, too, have wondered why people are smearing snail slime on their faces. Well, it might sound a little weird at first, but after some research and experimentation, I can agree that this gooey miracle worker is the real deal. From hydration to anti-aging perks, snail mucin is proving that sometimes, the best beauty secrets come from unexpected places.

THE BUZZ ON

WITH AMY BRADFORD

Let’s talk about the skincare ingredient that’s taking the beauty world by storm—snail mucin! Yep, you read that right. The slimy goodness that snails leave behind is now a must-have in skincare routines everywhere.

beauty

So, What Exactly is Snail Mucin?

Snail mucin (aka snail slime) is the stuff snails naturally produce to keep their little bodies protected and hydrated. Lucky for us, it’s packed with skin-loving goodies like hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, peptides, and antioxidants. The best part? Ethical skincare brands collect snail mucin in a cruelty-free way—no snails harmed, just happy, well-fed little guys doing their thing.

The Science Behind Snail Mucin

Snail mucin might sound like a weird skincare ingredient, but science says it’s

good for your skin! This slimy superstar is packed with skin-loving elements like hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, glycoproteins, and zinc, all of which help keep your skin hydrated, smooth, and glowing.

One of the coolest things about snail mucin is its ability to boost collagen and help repair skin. It contains glycoproteins, which help your skin produce more collagen and elastin—the two things that keep skin firm and bouncy. This means fewer fine lines and a plumper, more youthful look over time.

Another hero ingredient in snail mucin is hyaluronic acid, a powerful hydrator that locks in moisture and keeps your skin soft and dewy. Plus, there’s glycolic acid, which gently exfoliates, helping to brighten your skin and fade dark spots.

If you deal with redness, acne, or irritation, snail mucin has you covered! It has zinc and antimicrobial peptides, which calm inflammation and fight bacteria, making it a great choice for sensitive or breakout-prone skin.

And it’s not just hype—scientific studies have shown that snail mucin can improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and speed up healing. That’s why so many K-beauty products swear by it!

So, whether you’re looking for extra hydration, anti-aging benefits, or a little help with acne, snail mucin is a multitasking must-have for your skincare

routine. Pretty amazing for something that comes from a snail, right?

Why Your Skin Will Love It

Snail mucin isn’t just a gimmick—it’s a skincare superstar for a reason. Here’s why you need to get on board:

Mega Hydration – Think of it as a tall drink of water for your face. Thanks to hyaluronic acid, your skin stays plump and dewy all day long.

Fast-Track Skin Repair – Got acne scars or dry patches? Snail mucin speeds up healing and boosts collagen production, so your skin looks fresh and bouncy.

Bye-Bye Wrinkles – Those peptides and glycolic acid work together to smooth fine lines and keep your skin firm. Hello, youthful glow!

Soothing Superpowers – Redness? Irritation? Sensitive skin? Snail mucin calms things down and helps restore balance.

Glow-Up Magic – It evens out skin tone,

fades dark spots, and leaves you looking effortlessly radiant.

Why is Everyone Obsessed with It?

Snail mucin has been a staple in Korean beauty (K-beauty) for years, and now the rest of the world is catching on. Brands like COSRX, Benton, and Mizon have made it super easy to add this magic ingredient to your routine, whether through serums, essences, or moisturizers. And let’s be real— who doesn’t want a product that makes their skin look flawless and fresh?

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a skincare ingredient that hydrates, heals, and gives you that glass-skin glow, snail mucin is totally worth the hype. Give it a try—you might just become obsessed!

A QUICK FIT

A QUICK FIT

WITH THOMAS BLANE

What is Quick Fit?

Simply put, Quick Fit is all about exploring different gyms, restaurants, and sports nutrition stores, showcasing what they have to offer, and hopefully sparking your interest in trying something new.

I want you all to see things through my lens as I share my experiences at various places. There are so many cool things to do in Evansville and the surrounding Tri-State area, and my goal is to experience as much as possible and share it with you. My hope is that by stepping out of my comfort zone, I can inspire you to do the same.

Welcome to the Dojo

Hey guys TrainWithBlane here and in this issue, we are headed to VELOCITY FITNESS to learn something really cool. Velocity Fitness is located at 2419 Washington Ave Evansville, IN.

Greet the Sensei…WITH FIST!

As you all know, I’ve been diving deep into combat sports, primarily boxing, and I’m absolutely loving it! If I’m not sparring, I’m doing mitt work; if I’m not doing mitt work, I’m hitting the heavy bag and crushing my abs and cardio. Lately, I’ve been getting seriously jacked, and I’m really proud of my progress—it’s only been five months!

That being said, I can’t just limit myself to one gym when there are so many great places to train. One spot I recently checked out to sharpen my skills is Velocity Fitness! It’s an awesome gym located on the southeast side of Evansville at 2419 Washington Ave.

I first saw one of their ads pop up on my Facebook timeline, announcing an open gym session on Tuesday from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. When I saw it, I immediately thought, The champ, David Thomas, always tells me to learn from different gyms and train with a variety of people. So, I figured this was the perfect opportunity.

Feeling a little cocky, I decided to roll up and see who was ready to work. (That turned out to be

the dumbest thought I had all day.) I arrived at 6:40 PM and quickly realized I was the first one there. Walking in, I noticed a large room with several heavy bags on the floor, dim lighting, and LED lights lining the walls. To my left, a man sat at the desk and greeted me—none other than the dojo sensei himself, Damien Burge.

He welcomed me to the gym, and I told him I was there for open sparring and wanted to learn. Damien, who was just finishing his meal, informed me that his usual MMA guys weren’t there yet. But that didn’t matter—he offered to spar with me himself.

Now, let me tell you about Damien Burge. This man has traveled the world training in martial arts. He lived in Europe for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer, practicing Judo. He also spent time in Japan studying Aikido and trained in China under a Shaolin Warrior monk, becoming certified to teach Kung Fu. He holds numerous certifications, including a black belt with the World Martial Arts Fighting Federation, and he’s even in the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame! And this guy wanted to spar with me?! Nooo, I wasn’t ready!

We agreed to a few light rounds, and I told him I was mainly focused on boxing. He nodded and said, “Right on, let’s go.” I geared up, and he reassured me he’d take it easy. He didn’t.

Even at a light pace, his movements were fluid and effortless, making me work harder than ever to land a punch. He countered with precision and taught me in real time—showing me how to escape corners, time feints, and counterpunch effectively. We sparred for six three-minute rounds before someone else arrived to save me from the beatdown I was taking. But just as I thought I was done, Damien had me fight the newcomer, then jump back in the ring with him for one more round.

By the end of the session, I was completely spent, but I felt incredible. Damien praised my effort, and I thanked him for the opportunity. Before I left, I asked, “So, what exactly is Kung Fu?”

He smiled and said, “Kung Fu doesn’t just mean martial arts. It’s about achieving great skill through discipline and hard work. For me, it’s a way to connect with people and help them find themselves. It teaches discipline and control, which applies to all aspects of life.”

VELOCTITY PHILOSOPHY

Velocity Fitness was an amazing experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to train in kickboxing, self-defense, Tai Chi, and more. They’ve got a lot coming up in April, including kids’ classes starting at age five. If you’re looking to get fit fast, check out Velocity Fitness!

Navigating Workforce Trends in Evansville:

Why Outsourcing Recruiting Makes Sense

Evansville, Indiana, has always been a strong economic player in the tri-state area, with industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and finance driving local job growth. Companies like Berry Global, Old National Bank, and Deaconess Health System keep the economy thriving, but let’s be real—hiring and keeping the right people isn’t getting any easier. Businesses across the region are feeling the pinch of workforce shortages, skill gaps, and changing job expectations.

What’s Changing in the Evansville Job Market?

If you’re hiring in Evansville, you’ve probably noticed some major shifts in the local workforce. Here are some key trends shaping the job market:

• Wages Are Rising: Since 2020, average wages in the area have jumped nearly 7%. That’s great for workers, but for employers, it means staying competitive with salaries and benefits.

• Manufacturing Needs More Talent: With 14% of the area’s jobs tied to manufacturing, companies are scrambling to find skilled workers who can keep up with automation and industry changes.

• Healthcare Is Booming: With an aging population, the demand for healthcare professionals is skyrocketing, making it tough to fill positions quickly.

• Higher Income Households Are Increasing: The region’s economic growth means job seekers have more choices, and they’re looking for employers who offer great pay, flexibility, and career advancement. If you want more in-depth workforce data and regional economic

insights, the Evansville

• Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) is a great resource. They track job trends, workforce development initiatives, and growth strategies to help businesses stay ahead of the curve.

The Biggest Hiring Challenges in Evansville

Despite the strong economy, hiring in Evansville isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Here’s what local employers are up against:

• Aging Workforce: Many skilled workers are retiring, leaving gaps that aren’t easy to fill.

• Skills Mismatch: Technology and automation are reshaping jobs, and many applicants lack the exact skills businesses need.

• Keeping Talent in the Region: While Indiana is working to attract and retain young professionals, Evansville employers still struggle to compete with opportunities in bigger cities.

• Labor Force Participation: Not everyone who can work is working, whether due to family obligations, lack of training, or other factors.

Why Businesses Are Turning to Outsourced Recruiting

Let’s be honest—hiring is hard, and it takes up a lot of time and resources. That’s why more businesses in Evansville are outsourcing their recruiting to staffing experts like Domnovate. Here’s why it makes sense:

• Faster, Better Hires: Domnovate knows the local job market inside and out, meaning they can find the right candidates quickly and efficiently.

• Less Stress, More Productivity: Instead of spending weeks (or months) posting jobs, sorting resumes, and scheduling

interviews, businesses can focus on what they do best—running and growing their companies.

• Scalability: Whether you need to fill one position or staff an entire team, outsourcing recruiting gives you the flexibility to scale up or down as needed.

• Expertise Matters: Recruiting isn’t just about finding people—it’s about finding the right people. Domnovate specializes in connecting businesses with top talent that aligns with their culture and goals.

At the end of the day, Evansville’s workforce challenges aren’t going away, but there are smart ways to tackle them. Businesses that invest in upskilling, offer competitive benefits, and partner with the right hiring experts are the ones that will come out on top. And for job seekers, now is a great time to take advantage of new opportunities, whether through vocational training, career transitions, or higher education. Hiring doesn’t have to be a headache. With Domnovate in your corner, you can navigate the evolving job market with confidence— getting the right people in the right seats, at the right time.

Ifyou’re looking for a way to get out of debt for good, let me introduce you to the debt snowball.

The debt snowball method is where you pay off debt in order of smallest balance to largest balance. This allows you to gain momentum as you knock out each balance. When the smallest debt is paid in full, you roll the minimum payment you were making on that debt into the next-smallest debt payment. The debt snowball works because it’s all about changing your behavior. Your mindset has more to do with this equation than math ever will. In fact, personal finance is 80% behavior and only 20% head knowledge.

Here are the 5 steps to the debt snowball:

Step 1: List your debts from smallest to largest (regardless of interest rate).

Step 2: Make minimum payments on all your debts except the smallest debt.

Step 3: Throw as much extra money as you can on your smallest debt until it’s gone.

DOLLARS & SENSE:

FINANCIAL TIPS THAT WORK

WITH RACHEL BUDDE / THE BUDGET BLUEPRINT

Rachel Budde is a Dave Ramsey certified financial coach and runs The Budget Blueprint, a credit repair business, in Evansville, IN.

Step 4: Take what you were paying on your smallest debt and add that to your payment on the next-smallest debt until it’s gone too.

Step 5: Repeat until each debt is paid in full and you’re completely debt-free!

The quick wins you get with the debt snowball help you believe you can actually pay off your debt. And if you believe it, you’ll start behaving like it. The debt snowball method works. But I’ll be honest, it’s not a cake walk or a walk in the park. In fact, there’s no cake or walking involved here. It’s going to take hard work, sacrifice, budgeting—and constantly telling yourself “We have food at home”. (So hard to do sometimes, am I right?) Just like the snowball gaining speed on its way down the hill, you can power through paying off debt. And when you no longer have debt holding you back, you’re free to save for your future and build the life you really want.

Now, let’s see an example of how this method works in real life. In this scenario, you’ve got four different debts: 1. $500 medical bill—$50 payment 2. $2,500 credit card debt—$63 payment 3. $7,000 car loan—$135 payment 4. $10,000 student loan—$96 payment

Using the debt snowball method, you’d make minimum payments on everything except the $500 medical bill—that’s the one you attack with a vengeance. And let’s say you’re super focused on your goal, so you get a side hustle, bringing in an extra $500 each month that you add to your snowball. Since you’re paying $550 a month on the medical bill (the $50 minimum payment plus the extra $500), that debt is completely gone in one month. Boom! Now you can take the freed up $550 and put it toward your credit card debt, paying a total of $613 ($550 plus the $63 minimum payment). In about four months, you’ll be kissing that credit card debt goodbye. Next, you’ll punch that car loan in the face to the tune of $748 a month ($613 plus $135). In less than nine months, you’ll be driving off into the sunset in a vehicle you actually own. By the time you reach your last (and biggest) debt, you’ve gotten serious and decided to cut spending even more, giving you an extra $100 a month. So, now you can put $944 a month toward that dreaded student loan! With a hefty payment like that, you’ll be sending Sallie Mae packing her bags just nine months later.

You’ve got this!

PARALLELS IN LIFE WITH JEREMIAH GALEY

Hello, friends. My name is Jeremiah Galey. I’m a nearly two-decade veteran of the local food and hospitality industry. I own (along with my beautiful wife, Kimmy) and operate Bad Randy’s Hot Chicken & BBQ Lounge. This column is the mumblings and bumblings of introspection and parallels in life.

My wife and I LOVE dogs. Probably more than we like most people. I’m talking go to a party, say hi to the host, grab a drink, and then party with the dogs instead. That unbridled affection, the unquestioned loyalty, the sheer love they give. Every day of their lives revolves around loving you. Dogs kick ass, dude.

We’ve got a couple younger rescues now. Gigi the boxer, and Derek Jamal, the pitty-looking 17-breed combo boy. They’re some quirky freaks. They make us laugh every day.

Derek has a hang up with storms. Last year, a tornado came through right over our house. We were all huddled in the hall closet, and I’m pretty sure Derek has been traumatized ever since. Anytime he hears thunder, he’s glued to us.

Last week, we had a severe weather scare. We got some hail and a lot of rain, complete with a lightning show and a whole lot of thunder. Derek hung out with me on the couch while we watched a movie, until I had to get ready for work. When I took a shower, he laid outside the bathroom door. When he finally realized I was about to leave, Derek Jamal was pissed. He wouldn’t take a treat from me. That boy turned up his nose in disapproval. I laid the treat next to him. He took it immediately, and I begrudgingly left for work.

When my wife got home later, Derek wasn’t at the door to greet her, strangely. She looked around for a second and couldn’t find him. Then she heard a whimper coming from the bathroom. Derek Jamal was stuck in the bath tub. The tub was out of commission, and when our old husky Boobies got scared, she’d jump in there too, so we had put a couple old couch cushions in there years ago before Boobies died of cancer (RIP my best friend). Derek’s paws were slipping on the ledge and the boy was spread eagle and wide-eyed just trying to make it out of the tub, probably stuck for hours. What a heartbreak.

Life moves fast. We don’t have the luxury of hiding from the storm. It’s survive or perish. Avoiding the inevitable only worsens the outcome. Face your storm head-on. It’s always more difficult, but true character is revealed through difficult situations. We all get stuck in the tub every now and again, but remember: Derek Jamal made it out, and so will you.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Q: Are State Laws the Same or Do They Differ?

Tri-State residents often travel between Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois for work, sports or just for pleasure. However, even though the three states are a stone’s throw from each other, the laws in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois differ significantly.

This may be a surprise to a lot of people. Indeed, one of the most common misconceptions about the legal system in the United States is that laws are uniform across all states. While the U.S. Constitution establishes a federal legal framework, each state has its own set of laws, which vary from those of other states. This variation arises because of the

nation’s federalist structure, allowing states to govern themselves in many areas of the law. Examples of laws that may differ greatly from state to state include Personal Injury Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Business and Employment Law, Traffic Laws, Gun Laws and Consumer Protection and Taxation.

Q: Why Do These Differences Exist?

While the federal government provides overarching legal guidelines, each state can craft its own laws in many areas, leading to significant differences across the country. Whether you're moving to a new state, starting a business, or simply traveling, understanding these variations can help you navigate the legal landscape more effectively. The

differences in state laws are a testament to the flexibility of the U.S. legal system, ensuring that laws can be tailored to the unique needs of each state’s population.

Q: Can The Differences in State Law’s Affect Me Even if I Don’t Plan to Move to Another State?

In short, the answer is yes. For instance, if you live in Kentucky and travel to Indiana and are involved in a collision in Indiana, both Indiana and Kentucky state laws may apply to determine different aspects of the case and to interpret and enforce insurance policies and benefits available. This is why at Siesky Law, we have found it helpful to have lawyers licensed in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois.

With all the renovation shows and Pinterest boards promising luxury transformations, it’s easy to get swept up in the fantasy of a wine cellar or a backyard pizza oven. But let’s be honest, not all updates are created equal when it comes to your home’s resale value. If you’re looking to make smart improvements that will pay off when it’s time to sell, you need to focus on the upgrades that buyers really care about. The goal is simple: spend less, gain more. So, what are the updates with the best return on investment (ROI)? Let’s break it down.

Extra Square Footage = Extra Value

Got an unfinished basement or attic?

Transforming that space into usable living space can add significant value. Whether it’s a home office (a hot commodity in today’s remote work world), a guest suite, or a playroom, finishing an unused area can bring a strong return of 75-85%. Just make sure it’s a practical, well-lit space, no one wants to feel like they’re working in a dungeon.

Kitchen Remodels: The Crown Jewel of ROI

You’ve heard it before: kitchens sell homes, and it’s true, but before you start knocking down walls to create an open-concept chef’s dream, know this; minor kitchen remodels tend to have a better ROI than major overhauls. According to national remodeling reports, a modest kitchen facelift, new countertops, cabinet refacing, updated hardware, and modern appliances—can yield a return of 70-80% on resale. Stick to timeless choices. White cabinets, quartz countertops, and stainless-steel appliances are still buyer favorites. Trends come and go, and you will have simply remodeled into another update in the future.

REAL ESTATE RADAR

WITH JASON BROWN / PINNACLE

Bathroom Updates: Small Changes, Big Impact

Bathrooms always round out the top three when it comes to ROI. Like kitchens, you don’t need a full gut job to make a difference. Updating outdated vanities, replacing old tile, updating light fixtures, and adding a fresh coat of paint can work wonders. On average, a mid-range bathroom remodel sees a return of about 60-70%. For bonus points, install a rainfall showerhead or upgrade to a double vanity. Buyers always love a little spa-like luxury.

Curb Appeal: Love at First Sight

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and that starts at the curb. A well-manicured lawn, fresh exterior paint, and a stylish front door can dramatically improve your home’s perceived value. Landscaping improvements alone can yield over 100% ROI in some cases.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades: The Gift That Keeps Giving

Buyers love energy-efficient homes, and so should you. Swapping out old windows for energy-efficient models, adding insulation, and upgrading HVAC systems not only make your home more comfortable but also add serious value. New windows, for example, can recoup about 70% of their cost in resale value.

Flooring: Out with the Carpet and In with the Hardwood (or Wood Looks)

Carpet has its place, just not throughout today’s modern homes. If you’re still rocking old, worn-out carpet, replacing it with hardwood, engineered wood, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring can be a real gamechanger. Hardwood and engineered floors

offer an ROI of around 75-80% with LVP’s coming in around 70-75%.

Now that we’ve covered where to put your money, let’s quickly list a few upgrades that may seem valuable, but that really don’t bring a strong ROI.

Luxury bathrooms and kitchens: If you go too high-end, you can over improve. You must keep in mind, the value of similar homes, and not spend beyond your neighborhood’s value.

Swimming pools: While great summer fun, pools have a really low ROI and can even deter buyers who don’t want the added maintenance and cost of a pool.

Overly personalized decor: That neongreen accent wall may be your vibe, but it’s not everyone’s. Stick to neutral tones for broader appeal.

Final Thoughts

The best updates are the ones that make your home feel well-maintained, modern, and move-in ready. Buyers don’t want a project and even see something as minor as painting as a potential expense, or hassle they aren’t interested in. Buyers want a house that feels like home the moment they walk in.

So, before you splurge on that waterfall kitchen island or that in-ground pool, consider what truly adds value. A fresh coat of paint, a modernized kitchen, or an inviting front entry can do more for your home’s bottom line than you might think.

BLACKPINK’s Jennie is standing on her own, releasing debut solo album Rubie. In the pop anthem “like JENNIE,” the Korean artist exudes confidence and success, a clear nod to J.Lo’s “Jenny from the Block.” It’s a smart move for the artist, whose already amassed millions of fans wishing they were just like her. Not to mention the fire Korean rap cooking in the middle of the song. Jennie is free from the artistic constraints of her BLACKPINK bandmates, but she still enlists an impressive roster of artists to help prop up her first solo adventure. Doechii, Childish Gambino, Dua Lipa, Dominic Fike and Kali Uchis all make guest appearances, adding depth to her debut solo effort. Jennie and Dua Lipa harmonize beautifully on “Handlebars” while Fike and Jennie have a unique collaboration on darkly comedic “Love Hangover.” Jennie is a star and she knows it. 4 stars. -Marisa Patwa

Lady Gaga returns to her Fame roots with Mayhem, giving fans a taste of the popstar they fell in love with back in 2008.

“Disease” sounds like it could have been lifted straight from her debut album, with its high-intensity, industrial pop vibe—that signature Gaga flavor I’ve been goo-goo for almost 20 years.

“Abracadabra” channels the spirit of her Edge of Glory era, fully embracing 80’s dance pop. Standouts include disco-dance “Zombieboy,” synth-pop “Garden of Eden,” and 70’s harmony “Die with A Smile,” featuring Bruno Mars. Gaga’s fiancé, Michael Polansky, contributed to the album, co-writing several tracks and encouraging her to keep crafting pop music. While Gaga might aim for Mayhem, what she’s truly curated is controlled chaos.

Fiancés Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco first showed the world their artistic chemistry with playful, giant bed jumping hit “I Just Can’t Get Enough,” in 2019. Thankfully, the track, featuring Tainy and J Balvin, is now featured on this collaborative album. I Said I Love You First details how the two superstars fell in love in a dreamy and steamy lineup. In hyper-pop “Call Me When You Break Up,” Selena and Gracie Abrams give major “Call Me Maybe” vibes while Billie Eilish’s other half, Finneas O’Connell, lends his talents to “Scared of Loving You.” The song is emotionally raw with a simple and sweet production, while “Sunset Blvd” offers a catchy, 80’s-inspired poptechno beat, with whispered vocals that feel both nostalgic and fresh. The lovebirds are a musical match made in heaven. 4 stars -Marisa Patwa

BLUES WITH BRAGIN

MATT “THE RATTLESNAKE” LESCH Blues Cut Like Glass Blue Lotus Recordings

Matt “The Rattlesnake Lesch returns with his new album Blues Cut Like Glass. The album begins with “Feel So Good”, a song that features Lesch singing about a woman treats very well. Lesch’s superb guitar playing highlights the song. “He’s A Bluesman” offers a guest spot from Jonny “Diamond” Erblich on harmonica as Lesch sings about the exploits of blues musicians and plays a blistering guitar solo. Saxophones from Ben Shafer and Ian Buschmann on “Big Legged Woman” will move you to the dance floor. “I’m So Tired” starts with tight drumming from Riley Morgan, Jr., and boasts great bass playing from Tecora Morgan. Heavy blues guitar permeates the sound on “She’s My Everything” as Lesch sings about his woman treating him like a king.

“Sittin’ at the Station” possesses a seductive Latin groove reminiscent of Carlos Santana. Lesch laments the fact that he travels without anyone by his side on “Going Through This World All Alone”. The horn section returns with a melancholy sadness on “Blues Cut Like Glass” as Lesch takes out his frustration on his guitar. “Keep Your Promise” features a beat perfectly suited for dancing as John Davies plays a phenomenal bass. The instrumental track “Let Me Cook For Ya” features the trio of Lesch on guitar, Gus Thornton on bass and Chuck “Popcorn” Louden” on drums.

APRIL BEER REVIEWS

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 5

SOUR MONKEY

This beer pours a cloudy darker straw color. This is the best IP I have ever had. IPAs have grown on me over time and this one was great. I noticed it had a 6.5 % ABV. It had a nice hoppy flavor but it didn’t hit you over the head like most IPAs, which I liked. It also had a nice wheat flavor that I could detect. It was very easy to drink. I have bought other Sonder offerings at Schnucks and have enjoyed them also.

PAUL BRAGIN -

5

A decent white head forms on this hazy New England India pale ale and stays for a long time. A good amount of citrus and pine notes from the hops fill the nose. Similarly, the first sip of the beer contains a generous burst of fruity citrus flavors that remain during the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs need to drink this. Pair it with a fried chicken sandwich, grilled cheese or birria tacos.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This beer pours an opaque tangerine hue with a thick white head. Citrus notes on the nose lead to juicy citrus, with flavors of grapefruit and orange. Slight hoppy bitterness and a smooth body make this a very refreshing NEIPA.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This beer poured a slightly hazy straw color with minimal carbonation. I am not a fan of sours. They are hard for me to drink. I ask myself “why”, do they make them. I could taste a light citrus flavor but the sour was just too much for me. I gave it a 3 because it was exactly as describedsour. It is hard to review something that causes me to flinch when I drink it.

PAUL BRAGIN -

4

A thin white head tops this sour tripel style ale and disappears quickly. The scent contains a healthy dose of sour fruit notes. Similarly, more sour fruit flavors hit the tongue with the initial tasting and stay during the extended finish. People who enjoy sour beers will want to try this. It might see a rise in popularity during the hot summer months. Pair it with lighter dishes like salads, cheeses or fruit desserts.

PAUL HOLLYFELD- 4

This sour pours a nearly clear yellow-orange with a thin head. On the nose is the tartness of Granny Smith and apple cider vinegar. It is sour on the palette, with a slight funkiness. There is little bitterness, but instead a lingering tartness on the back of the tongue. Solid choice if you like sours.

BOURBON & SPIRIT REVIEW

ROOTS OF RUIN GIN

It's April which means it's time to watch the flowers bloom and craft a floral cocktail. This month I decided to review one of my personal favorites, Roots of Ruin Gin by Castle & Key. This small-batch spirit from Kentucky redefines what gin can be, delivering a tasting journey as enigmatic as its name.

Packaging:

The bottle is a great example of what can stand out on a shelf. With its solid glass geometric bottle and gold cap it pops at first glance. The label design is earthy and botanical-themed, paying tribute to the gin inside. If you are someone who likes to collect spirits, this bottle would be a beautiful addition.

Taste:

Roots of Ruin balances the floral traditional flavor with a palatable taste. It opens with a bright juniper profile, as any classic gin should, but then takes finishes with touches of lavender and citrus peel. A peppery warmth rounds out the taste, giving it an unforgettable finish that lingers long after the last sip.

LEMON LAVENDER GIN RICKEY

INGREDIENTS

• 3 ounces gin

• 4 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 2 tablespoons honey

• 4 ounces seltzer water

• 2 sprigs lavender

• 2 wedges of lemon

INSTRUCTIONS:

Pour gin, lemon juice, and honey over ice in a cocktail shaker and shake well. Strain into two glasses filled with ice. Top with seltzer.

Drinkability:

Ideal for both cocktail lovers and those who prefer their spirits neat, this gin is as versatile as it comes. Many people complain that gin can smell or taste like bad perfume, but this one is well balanced and can go solo or mixed.

Overall:

This Kentucky gin proves that the bluegrass state has mastered more than just bourbon. With every sip and cocktail you make; you'll feel like you're discovering a new scent.

Landon Miller is a Kentucky native and former bartender with a passion for bourbon and spirits, bringing experience and love for his home state's rich distilling tradition to offer honest, insightful reviews for fellow enthusiasts.
