A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Ah, December — the holiday traditions we’ve been looking forward to. This time of year always brings a sense of warmth, reflection, and community, and we’re excited to share some of that with you in this month’s issue.
In News 4U this month, we’re featuring some amazing local events. The Philharmonic’s upcoming concert featuring works by Beethoven and Ravel promises to be a highlight, and we’ve also got a lineup of performances in our Winter Concert Guide that are sure to get you into the holiday spirit. From classical to contemporary, there’s no shortage of music to enjoy this season.
We’re also spotlighting a few local charities doing great work in the community. Whether you’re looking to donate, volunteer, or simply learn more about how you can help, we’ve included some organizations that are making a real difference this season. It’s a great time to give back and support causes that matter.
And of course, it wouldn’t be December without holiday traditions— whether it’s a favorite event or a special family tradition, we’ve rounded up a few things happening around town that are worth checking out. Plus, we’ve included some local businesses and artists that are offering unique gifts and experiences to make your season a little brighter.
One last thing: We want to make it clear that we’ll never be including mugshots in this publication. We prefer to focus on celebrating people for the right reasons. There are places online you can go and see those if it’s what you’re into. But that place isn’t here…not while I’m driving.
Anyway, cheers to a December filled with music, good company, and all the things that make this time of year special.
Warmly,
MARIDA BRINGS TURKISH AND KURDISH FLAVORS TO NEWBURGH
Marida, the highly anticipated Turkish and Kurdish restaurant in Newburgh, offers stunning river views, a beautifully renovated space, and a menu of authentic, flavorful dishes crafted with fresh, traditional ingredients.
One of the most anticipated restaurant openings of 2024 was Marida Turkish and Kurdish cuisine. Offering one of the best river views of any restaurant in the area, Marida opened to the public Sept. 16th 2024, at 1 East Water Street in downtown Newburgh, IN.
The exterior and interior have been completely renovated, offering a comfortable and inviting dining experience, including large comfortable booths accented by an LED backlit water wall in the bar. There is a coffee lounge, a large upstairs space for private dining, special occasions, events, business meetings, and several outdoor patios showcasing the spectacular river views.
Turkish and Kurdish cuisine is very pure in quality and made from very simple recipes.
Key ingredients include marinated meats, stews, vegetables, and fresh salads. Mezeh are cold dishes similar to Spanish Tapas. Soups and fresh breads are also integral to the meal. The country's bread consumption is so large that the average Turk annually consumes more than their body weight in bread annually.
From past visits, some favorites include Lentil soup (red lentil, onion, potato, carrot, garlic, butter, black pepper, red pepper and dry mint), Hummus, the Gyro, Cabbage Rolls stuffed with ground beef, rice and a spicy tomato sauce, and Falafel (fried chickpea patties seasoned with parsley, cilantro, onions and Anatolian spices). One dish you do not want to miss is the Kebap Festival (shown on our cover), which is an amazing protein-centric dish consisting of grilled Adana, Chicken, Kofta and Lamb chops, served with grilled tomatoes and peppers, and yellow basmati rice. In my opinion, the end of every meal should also include an order of Baklava (layered phyllo dough covered in honey and ground pistachios), and their amazing Turkish Coffee. Or enjoy a craft cocktail or glass of wine from their full bar.
Marida Mediterranean Restaurant is owned and operated by a talented group of Kurdish chefs who bring years of experience and passion to the kitchen. The Newburgh location is their 4th, and the first to be located outside of Nashville. Edessa Restaurant opened in Nov. 2018, and is the original and most traditional. There is a Kurdish Community Religion Center
located nearby, and to respect their cultural and religious values alcohol is not served at that location. Istanbul Shawarma opened in May of 2021, and Edessa Burger & Pizza followed in March of 2023.
Before making the decision to move to Newburgh, the owners spent a week here, in order to understand the area, people and dining preferences. They discovered that the Newburgh community values the dining experience as much as the food, and that a restaurant visit is also about spending quality time with family and friends, meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories. This insight was pivotal to the décor and ambiance of the restaurant. Their goal is to establish a meaningful relationship with the community by sharing their food and culture. Each dish is prepared with the freshest ingredients and traditional cooking techniques, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience.
The owners shared that although they do have future plans for other restaurant concepts in the area, it is a bit premature to discuss them in detail at this moment.

Get ready for a night of unforgettable music when the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra takes the stage at the Victory Theatre on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 7 p.m. This exciting concert features two legendary composers: Ludwig van Beethoven and Maurice Ravel. Under the direction of Music Director Roger Kalia, the evening promises to be a thrilling combination of bold, heroic music and vibrant, jazzy piano magic.
The concert will kick off with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, a piece that blends classical elegance with the lively energy of jazz. Written in the 1930s, Ravel’s concerto is a mix of playful rhythms and lush melodies. The first movement starts with an upbeat energy while the second movement takes a more relaxed, bluesy turn. The finale is a lively, fast-paced section that highlights the virtuosity of the soloist, filled with sparkling piano runs and intricate rhythms.
The featured soloist for this performance is 20-year-old pianist Parker Van Ostrand, who is making his debut with the Evansville Philharmonic. A rising star in the classical music world, Parker is currently studying at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he’s learning from renowned pianists Garrick Ohlsson and Yoshikazu Nagai.
BEETHOVEN & RAVEL AT
VICTORY THEATRE
Parker’s list of accolades is impressive, recently winning the 2023 PianoTexas Academy Concerto Competition and performing with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. He’s also a Gold Medalist from the Wideman International Piano Competition and played alongside famous artists like Yuja Wang.
Parker’s technical skill and musical expression have already earned him widespread recognition, and his performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G will surely be one of the evening’s highlights. This young pianist has a bright future ahead, and you’ll get to see him up close in what’s sure to be an electrifying performance.
The second half of the concert will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, also known as Eroica . This symphony is one of Beethoven’s most groundbreaking works and is often seen as a turning point in the history of classical music. Eroica is filled with dramatic, emotional moments and reflects themes of heroism and struggle. Originally written as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte (before Beethoven famously withdrew the dedication), the symphony’s boldness and grandeur make it one of the most beloved pieces. From the triumphant opening to the somber funeral march and the victorious finale, Eroica is a musical journey that is as powerful as it is moving.
Under the direction of Roger Kalia, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra will bring out all the emotional depth of Beethoven’s
masterpiece, making it a perfect complement to the energy and sparkle of Ravel’s concerto.
This concert is made possible by generous sponsorship, from Dr. Lee & Kirsten Wagmeister sponsoring the concert, the Koch Foundation sponsoring the guest artist, and Droste’s Jewelry Shoppes supporting the Symphony of Color. From Homelessness to Hopefulness: A Local Woman’s
Story
of Redemption Brandy Hart
Sometimes it’s the darkest moments that reveal our strength. Brandy Hart knows this better than anyone. A woman who has fought through mental illness, homelessness, and profound personal loss, Brandy’s story is one of heartbreaking adversity and remarkable resilience. It’s a story not just of survival, but of finding hope in the most unlikely of places.
A little over a year ago, Brandy’s life spiraled out of control. Struggling with mental illness, she experienced a manic episode that lasted for several months, leaving her disconnected from reality. Those who love her worried she might never recover from her illness. She was hospitalized four times in a very short period, but finally, thankfully, the right medication brought her back to herself. The road to recovery, however, was far from easy. In addition to her mental health struggles, Brandy found herself without a home.
Her illness, combined with the overwhelming challenges of everyday life, led her to homelessness. For months, she lived without a stable place to call home, living a life that felt more like survival than
living. But even in the face of such crisis, Brandy decided: she was going to fight. She committed herself to recovery—not just from her mental illness, but also from the addictions that had gripped her for years. Today, she is almost one year sober. That is truly something to celebrate, a testament to her strength and determination.
One of the most painful aspects of Brandy’s struggle was being separated from her children. She hasn’t seen them in over a year, but her love for them remains unwavering. During her darkest times, Brandy knew she had to find a way to create something positive out of her pain. And so, she wrote a book—a children’s story meant to help kids understand the complexities of mental illness in a simple, relatable way.
Happy Birthday Big B tells the story of a parent, represented by a bee, who needs to go away for care. Through a heartwarming narrative and beautiful illustrations, the story explains to children that it’s okay for a parent to need help, and that taking care of oneself is sometimes necessary. In the story, the bee—named Big B—celebrates her birthday while she’s away, a reminder that life, no matter how difficult, is a gift worth celebrating.
Writing the book was just the beginning. Brandy didn’t have the resources to pay an illustrator, so she reached out for help. That’s when Cameron Belt stepped forward. Cameron offered to work on the project without upfront payment, understanding the importance of the book’s message. He not only illustrated the story, but also became Brandy’s co-
author and helped publish it on Amazon. Together, they brought her vision to life.
In August, Brandy took a copy of the book to Brentwood, a place that had supported her during her recovery, and gave them a copy along with a thank-you cake. The timing felt like the perfect moment of gratitude and growth.
The goal behind the book isn’t fame or money. It’s to reach families who might be struggling with similar issues, and to help children understand that mental illness is something that can be managed, and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. For Brandy, this project represents triumph over tragedy—proof that even the most broken pieces can be put back together into something beautiful.
Brandy Hart’s story is not just one of homelessness and hardship; it is one of hope. It’s a reminder that even in the face of life’s challenges, there is always a way to fight for a brighter future.

Holiday Traditions A to Z
WITH GRETCHIN IRONS
The days are crisp, there are twinkling lights covering trees and homes, and Christmas music is everywhere! The Season is upon us, and everyone has their ideas of how to spend the darkening days and fill them with Wonder. Traditions are fascinating, and when I asked some people around town about theirs, I got wildly varying answers.
“For the 43 years I’ve been married to Larry, we have church on Christmas evening, then we go to his grandmother’s house for snacks and get together with family all around. It’s really cool!”
-Karen LaFontaine
“When my children still lived at home, on Christmas, instead of going through the hassle of cooking a large dinner every year, we started getting Chinese food. Which we obviously got the idea after watching a 24 hour ‘A Christmas Story’ marathon.”
-Josh Williams
“My tradition is no tradition. Just take it as it comes on any given year. Stress is no good for anyone.”
-Phyllis Tunks
All of you got me thinking, so I’ve compiled a list of traditions, new and old, for you to capture some magical memories this year.
A: Advent Calendars
These ain’t your granny’s from back in the day. You can order just about any theme for yours, including cats and Star Trek.
B: Be GOOD (or get coal)
This actually happened to a sister of mine. Still funny. Don’t get on the Naughty list!
C: Candy Canes
Enough said.
D: December 5th
Okay, hear me out, on December 5th,
German children place their shoes outside the front door for Santa to fill with candy. Who doesn’t love candy?
E: Eyes All Aglow
Choose one gift THOUGHTFULLY. We received personalized ornaments from Hallmark, with our names engraved on them. It was always my favorite gift. Or have everyone write letters to Santa, adults included. (We need Magic too!)
F: Family and Friends
See them. Celebrate them.
G: Goodies
So, you’re not a Chef, embrace that you might make an Epic Fail and choose to make something new.
H: Holly and Hot Chocolate
I: Icicles
If we don’t get the real ones, you can buy them in all kinds of forms. It’s a “We expect a White Christmas” thing around here.
J: Joy to the World
Take the time to be kinder, to bring Happiness to someone else’s day. (Especially those retail folks.)
K: Krampus (BEWARE!) or Kiss under the Mistletoe
L: Lights
Tour your neighborhood or go downtown and visit the city’s tree.
M: Merry & Bright
Make this your motto every time you leave home.
N: Nothing No judgement.
O: Come All Ye Faithful
Spend some time in your local place of
worship, or even attend a Midnight Mass (you don’t have to be Catholic).
P: Parties
Enough said.
Q: Quiet nights by the fire
R: Roasting chestnuts
And yes, people must still do this because grocery stores still sell them.
S: Santa Because…SANTA!
T: ‘Twas the Night…
Read “A Visit from St. Nick” to get everyone in the mood.
U: Ugly Christmas Sweaters
(Ew. But you do you. And Goodwill is a great source.)
V: Vacation
Visit family, or just get away from it all in a foreign place with plenty of sunshine.
W: White Elephant (I hate this game.)
X: Xmas
Did you know that the “X” is a Christogram? (I guess technically that’s a fact…oops.)
Y: Yuletide Carols
Either find a place to hear them live or take your show on the road! Chances are, if your neighbors hosted a band for a Porch Fest, they’ll tolerate your tones.
Z: Ze End
Traditions are a “Pick Your Own Adventure”, there is no right way or wrong way to celebrate…BUT they must include a sprinkle of Enchantment.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Cars & Coffee Evansville
If you’re a car enthusiast, odds are you’ve heard of Cars & Coffee. If you aren’t, odds are you’ve seen the parking lot of Washington Square Mall filled with a sea of brightly colored metal and fiberglass.
Cars & Coffee Evansville is a celebrated monthly gathering of local auto enthusiasts. It’s where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and the bond over all things car related is celebrated. Founded by Corey and Brittany Nutt in 2012, this event has grown into a vibrant community tradition, bringing together auto enthusiasts of all ages and from all backgrounds. The appreciation of design, style, and the sounds of horsepower delight everyone from 3-year-olds in strollers to the 80-year-old who bought his Corvette new in the 1960’s.
After starting at the Starbucks on Burkhardt Rd., the event moved to the Donut Bank parking lot off Green River Road in 2014, where it exploded in popularity. In 2023 the event grew so large that it was moved to its current location at Washington Square Mall. With the support of Mission Grounds Coffee Shop, KC’s Time Out Lounge, and local law enforcement, the local car community is thriving!
The variety of vehicles on display is always impressive. Ferrari, Lamborghini,
Lotus, and other exotics share the lot with American classics and muscle cars, European imports, sports cars, Jeeps, trucks, custom builds, and motorcycles. Sheriff Noah Robinson will also gladly show you around the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office first-ever fully Electric Patrol Vehicle (EPV) - their 2016 Tesla Model S 75D.
The event is child and dog friendly – the latter should be well behaved & leashed.
Cars n’ Coffee EVV is held the first Sunday of every month – rain or shine – from 9am to noon. There is a $5 entry fee to display your vehicle, which covers event insurance and security, with most proceeds donated to the community through local children’s charities. It is not only a celebration of automotive culture but also a force for good in the community.
As Cars & Coffee Evansville continues to grow, Corey and Brittany, Steven Shutz, Chad Dupont and other volunteers remain dedicated to their mission of creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all attendees. The event has become a staple in the Evansville community, and its future looks bright with continued support from all of us.

MONTHLY FOOD REVIEW WITH BRIAN BUXTON
When you write about food, dining, and the local restaurant scene you meet a wide variety of people – from restaurant owners and managers, to wait staff and bartenders. Some are exactly what you’d expect, and others will occasionally surprise you. David Parker, owner of the Prime Time group of restaurants, is an example of the “occasionally surprising.”
Parker has 30+ years of experience in food service, and before becoming an owner he worked in steak houses, sports bars and Jazz clubs. For 16 years was a general manager, director of operations and regional trainer for Applebee’s. If it happens in the kitchen, the front of the house or the bar, he knows the inner workings. He is also a veteran and is heavily involved in the local community. I doubt there’s a kid’s sports team, charity, nonprofit or animal rescue that he hasn’t supported. Parker believes in giving back to the community that has been so supportive to him and has donated over $23k in 2024 through fundraising events, donations, and give-backs.
Prime Time opened in 2019 as his first venture and was designed specifically for Newburgh. He refers to it as an “upscale sports bar” or “fine casual” restaurant. The menu focuses on prime rib, steaks, a large selection of unique (and award winning) burgers, and a variety of appetizers. They just released their second menu revamp, where variety, food quality and value for your money were a large consideration. New menu items include rice bowls, pasta, pow-wow shrimp, a patty melt, sliders, and a delicious pork tenderloin. Their award-winning mac & cheese also is a must-try. You can enjoy a filling meal for $12.00 or you can order salmon, a filet, or a large cut prime rib with horseradish and

Monday through Friday you can enjoy half off wines, wells, and domestic draft beers as a Happy Hour special between 3pm and 6pm. Patrons can also enjoy live music, karaoke, trivia nights and bingo.
Prime Time is constantly adapting and striving to exceed customer expectations. They watch social media and take your comments and opinions to heart. For their efforts, they have received several readers’ choice nominations for best burger, best wings, best caterer, best outdoor seating, and best spot for a business lunch. In their first year open Prime Sports was named one of the area’s top-3 sports bars. They also won Best Burger at Burger Brawl, and Best Mac

MILLER’S CATERING AND BARBEQUE: A PASSION FOR FOOD AND COMMUNITY
Since 2017, Warren and Dianna Miller have been behind Miller’s Catering and Barbecue, a food truck born from a love of grilling and competition. Long before they hit the streets of Evansville with their popular food truck, the Millers were making a name for themselves at local grilling competitions. “About 20 years ago, we competed in many grilling competitions and kept winning grand prizes,” Warren recalls. With their unique barbecue sauces, seasonings, and smoked meats becoming local favorites, it was clear that they had a special gift. The natural next step was catering for friends and local events, and in 2018, they purchased their Smokehouse, fully committing to their dream.
Naming their food truck was surprisingly tough for the Millers. "I used to coach wrestling, and my wrestlers called me 'Miller,' so we just stuck with that," Warren explains. It may not have been a fancy or flashy choice, but it’s one that resonates with the community.
While their food truck is on the road primarily from April through September, with regular stops at Pat Coslett’s Simplicity Furniture on
Fridays and the Franklin Street Bazaar on Saturdays, catering remains their true focus. Their limited event schedule helps them stay fresh in the minds of the public while offering tastings to prospective clients. “We really focus on catering the rest of the year and do this for fun,” Dianna shares.
Running a food truck isn’t without its challenges. “It’s a lot of hard work, and you have to realize you’ll be working most hours of every day,” Warren admits. From the logistical difficulty of maneuvering a large truck and trailer to meeting the varied tastes of customers, there’s no shortage of obstacles. But despite these challenges, Miller’s Catering and Barbecue has built a loyal following, thanks in part to the couple’s commitment to quality food and excellent customer service.
Their signature dishes have become crowd favorites, with their creamy Mac and Cheese being the star of many of their most popular menu items like the Miller’s Mac Bowl and the Gold Digger Nachos. The Prime Beef Brisket and Smoked and Sliced Chicken Breast are also fan favorites.
Warren and Dianna attribute much of their success to word-of-mouth promotion and building strong relationships within the Evansville food community. “We believe treating your customers with respect and making sure they are taken care of is the best marketing,” says the Millers. The couple also
appreciates the support of others in the local food truck scene, particularly the Evansville Food Truck Facebook page, which helps inform people where they will be serving.
One of the most memorable experiences we've had since starting our food truck has been the journey itself. Dreaming, starting, and developing the business into a success as a couple has been indescribable. Working together every day in every aspect of the business has been an incredible experience, and we will always cherish the moments shared with our kids and friends. Our business has brought us so much fun and laughter, and it’s important to us to teach our children how to be entrepreneurs along the way.
For aspiring food truck owners, Warren offers this advice: “Make sure you have a strong team. Study everything for a year and be ready to take out the trash and answer the phone, it’s not just about cooking.”
The Millers’ journey is one of passion, commitment, and community. Their love for great food and their dedication to sharing it with others continues to drive them forward.
See you down the road!

CAJUN STYLE HAM
The holidays are upon us and one thing we look forward to besides gifts under the tree is a nice meal with family and friends. So, I want to give you a spin on a traditional ham. Let me introduce you to a Cajun style ham that includes root beer in the glaze!
Spiral sliced ham (I use spiral sliced hams, you can used unsliced if you prefer)
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
24 ounces of Barq’s root beer
1 1/2 tablespoons of Tabasco
6 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 orange, juiced and zest
1/2 lemon, juiced and zest
• Combine dry mustard and brown sugar and rub over the entire ham.
• Place ham in broiler pan.
• Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
• Place ham in oven.
• Put all other ingredients into sauce pan and reduce by 1/2, this needs to be done prior to the ham being put into the oven.
• Spoon glaze over the ham and continue glazing every 15 minutes.
• Bake the ham for 1 hour
Serve and enjoy!!!

The restaurant business is a rough road, and success is far from guaranteed in a business with very narrow margins for profit. A study by Ohio State University found that 60% of new restaurants didn't make it past the first year, and 80% close within five years. It's not a venture for the weak.

AMAZING SOUL CRACKERSWHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES
EVANSVILLE
Evansville has no shortage of talented musicians, and over the years every genre of music has been represented on local stages. Those of you old enough to have attended some of the OG live music venues will inevitably have a story from the Duck Inn, Gloria’s Corral Club, Funky’s, Hammerheads, Harpoles, Breakers or Fast Eddy’s. Today, Bokeh Lounge, Lamasco, Mojo’s Boneyard, Crickets, Bud’s and KC’s Time Out Lounge continue to host some excellent bands.
Some of my best memories are from Sunday nights at the Deerhead Tavern listening to (in my opinion) one of the area’s most iconic Blues bands – the Amazing Soul Crackers. In years past the band has enjoyed the talent of Jimmy Cummings (drums) and Jack Ingram (keyboard), but the current lineup of Tommy Stillwell (guitar / vocals), Jon Rochner (bass
/ vocals), and Danny Erkman (percussion / vocals) continue to grace local stages. Although they don’t play as often as they used to, this blues fan can remember when they religiously played at the Deerhead every Sunday night for over 16 years. The only time they missed a gig was if Christmas happened to fall on a Sunday. The venue was so connected to the band they even recorded a live album and DVD there, with this author serving as executive producer.
And although each individual member has enjoyed success with other musicians over the past 40+ years, I feel like they have truly “clicked” as the Amazing Soul Crackers. They all had a passion for the Blues but found each other in 1986 when each was playing in different country bands at Gloria’s Corral Club. After sitting in together during various gigs, they knew that they had found something special as a band.
Their live performances are full of energy and soul, and there is something special about watching a performance where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There is a cohesiveness and chemistry between them that makes each performance true art. Watching Tommy play, you feel that he’s diving deep into the heart of music itself, understanding the meaning and emotions behind each note he plays and interpreting it for the audience through his own natural talent showcases his true mastery of the guitar.
“Big Jon” as he was known when I first met him, is a truly unique person and musician.
His look and laid-back demeanor and his deep soulful voice and uncomplicated playing style bring so much to every performance. His natural talent, phrasing, and tone on the bass is always a joy to watch and listen to. Not to mention he is such a humble and down to earth person. And finally, Danny Erkman – his unique playing style, passion, economy and musicality explain his decades long musical career. Not to mention his ability to play any genre of music with apparent ease. The uniqueness of each of these individuals is what makes them so great as a whole and is one of the reasons for the band’s longevity and success.
I’d like to delve into more about each individual band member, so watch for a part 2 in the January 2025 issue … to be continued!
DECEMBER COUPONS!
Idiscovered Jimmy Buffett in my teens. I Loved his music, stories and down to earth--well, sand to be precise—image. I spoke with Mac McAnally who joined Jimmy’s band in 1994, becoming a celebrated musician whose career spans over three decades, marked by collaborations with icons like Buffett, Kenny Chesney, and Dolly Parton.
Born in Red Bay, Alabama, Mac has built a reputation as a versatile musician, playing everything from acoustic guitar and piano to mandolin and harmonica. He’s written hits like “Down the Road” for Kenny Chesney and “Old Flame” for Alabama, earning ten CMA Musician of the Year awards and a place in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Yet, despite his incredible success, Mac remains a humble, behind-the-scenes presence—always preferring the role of the side man, giving the cowardly lion’s share of credit—Jimmy joked Mac’s bushy hair was straight out of Oz—to the man who gave him the confidence to show up.
Mac explained to me on the phone, "I was never born with the ambition to be in the middle of the stage. I’ve always played by

myself because if there’s anyone else on stage, I end up backing them up." It’s a sentiment that speaks to Mac's collaborative nature, one that’s reflected in his longtime partnership with the Coral Reefer Band, where he served as both bandleader and sideman to Jimmy Buffett. "It’s a great honor to be standing next to Jimmy, feeling all that positive energy," Mac shares, reflecting on their years together. "He gave so much pure joy, and it’s a joy to keep his spirit alive for the fans."
Mac’s solo shows, while rooted in this humble spirit, are far from ordinary. Alongside his longtime percussionist, Eric Darken, who creates instruments from pots, pans, and auto parts, Mac delivers a truly unique performance. "Eric’s always got something creative cooking, and it keeps things fresh," he laughs. This creativity flows into Mac’s new music, including his latest releases: “Oysters and Pearls,” a heartfelt song co-written with Jimmy Buffett, which Mac says has deeper significance now. Also new is “All the Way Around,” a track inspired by his travels and performance in Antarctica.
As Mac continues to carry the torch for both his own career and the legacy of Jimmy, his new music takes on a special meaning. "Some of the fans are still mourning Jimmy’s passing, and it’s nice to be able to remind them of the positive work he left behind. It’s a win-win—reminding them of the joy he brought and feeling that joy myself," Mac says. These new songs are not just a continuation of his musical journey but a tribute to the lasting impact of Buffett’s music and generosity on the world.
Looking ahead, Mac is gearing up for an exciting year, including his upcoming debut headline show at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium on January 31, 2025. It's a performance he has dreamed of for years with Jimmy, but it wasn't until after Jimmy was gone that the opportunity came to fruition.
Locally, Mac’s tour includes an appearance at the Victory Theatre in on January 11, 2025. Tickets are on sale. (I got mine. Thanks, Asa!!)
With new music on the horizon and a renewed sense of purpose, Mac McAnally continues to remind fans—and himself—of the pure joy that music can bring. "It’s all still here, and that’s the beauty of it," he says. For those who’ve been following Mac’s career, his upcoming shows promise a mix of nostalgia, joy, and celebration—a reminder that the party, as he and Jimmy always said, will keep going.

COMEDY & CURIOSITIES
WITH DANNY BROWNING
December is upon us, and my hair still smells like deep-fried turkey. I don’t know about you, but the past 11 months have blurred together like the provocative pages of a “Where’s Waldo?” book. Good news: these last 31 days are the holiday sauce. December offers something for everyone: incredible shopping deals, fun family meals, and if you’re lucky, some sexy New Year’s Eve parties with a festive assortment of cheeseballs.
When it comes to religious holidays, December is home to the legends. Christians celebrate Christmas, Jews observe Hanukkah, and the Costanzas bring us Festivus—all encouraging quality time with loved ones, often punctuated by the airing of grievances around the dinner table. Not for you? No worries. December is stuffed like a stocking with other holidays that will bring you joy faster than Rudolph during rush hour.
December 5 - Bathtub Party Day: This fun and lighthearted holiday encourages people to enjoy a relaxing bath. The idea is to take a break from the stresses of the season and indulge in a soothing soak, despite the presence of dead skin flakes and poop particles. I wasn’t even planning to bring this up, but apparently, some people still enjoy taking baths. If that’s you, then grab your rubber ducky, pour yourself a glass of wine, and rub-a-dub-dub until you achieve that life-changing Herbal Essence moment.
December 6 - Bartender Appreciation Day: Joy to the world, the bartender has come with drinks! No one deserves their
own day more than bartenders. They work tirelessly during the holiday season, helping us cope with the stress of the festivities. This day may not be as important as Christmas, but let’s be honest: while baby Jesus is the bringer of salvation and light, bartenders bring margaritas and limes. Much like the menorah that burns bright for eight days, a good bartender’s patience and stamina are unwavering during the holiday rush. Essentially, bartenders may not perform divine miracles, but they certainly know how to spread cheer with your favorite holiday spirits.
December 21 - Crossword Puzzle Day: Studies suggest that doing crossword puzzles may help improve vocabulary, memory, and overall cognitive function. They’re also a great excuse to curl up by the fire and stay home from church. Remember, if you ever come across the clue, “A 6-letter word for how Santa likes his beer,” the answer is FROSTY.
December 30 - National Bacon Day: There’s nothing better than a baconinfused Bloody Mary, and there’s no better time than the end of the year to enjoy several. If you love bacon, the most American thing you can do is overindulge today. Even the Bible says that the three wise men brought the baby Jesus frankincense, gold, and bacon-wrapped cocktail wieners, so it’s perfectly okay for
you to air-fry some Oreos wrapped in that thick-cut deliciousness.
Whatever day you celebrate, I wish you joy and merriment this holiday season. Go out, grab some local LAUGHS, and don’t forget to TIP your bartenders!

December film releases feature a Christmas thriller, a Marvel-comic movie, and a reimagination of a silent film making its way to the big screen this holiday season.
CARRY ON
The stakes are high this holiday season with Christmas thriller Carry On. Taron Egerton stars as a TSA officer who is blackmailed by a dangerous criminal (Jason Bateman) into allowing a mysterious package through. In the claustrophobic catalog of Christmas movies released every winter, they usually fall under romance or comedy. We haven’t been gifted a good action holiday movie since Die Hard in 1988 but Carry On is attempting to fill in some decades-long gaps. While November saw the release of action-packed Red One, Carry On is far from comedic, leaning more towards the dark and thrilling side of Christmas. It will be a delight to see Bateman play an evil character for once and as a Kingsman graduate, Egerton has just the right chops to take him on. NETFLIX 12/13
KRAVEN THE HUNTER
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is trading in his Kick-Ass jumpsuit for some leather and fur in Kraven the Hunter. This latest Marvel-comic movie is in the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which includes the Venom movies, Morbius and Madame Web. This leads me to believe Kraven will be just as dark as its predecessors. Taylor-Johnson plays a nearly invincible bounty-hunter who possesses animalistic qualities that make him one of the deadliest predators in the world. Not only does he not have a team of superhero friends by his side, but he also has two big bads to defeat by the 1 hour and 59-minute runtime’s end: an evil Russian mercenary who doubles as a human-rhino hybrid and his father, a soulless crime lord (Russell Crowe) who left his son for dead as a teen. Ironically, the blood of the lion who his dad let attack him, may have just given this bounty hunter the superpowers he needs to finally defeat him. IN THEATERS 12/13
NOSFERATU
One of the first films in history is making a reappearance over a century later. When Nosferatu was first released in 1922, the silent film captivated and disturbed audiences for its creepy cinematic experience. The original German film details a young woman being tormented by a Transylvanian vampire and this new horror gothic iteration is set to follow suit. Director Robert Eggers assembled a truly perfect cast with It’s Bill Skarsgård transforming from killer clown to venomous vampire. Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe also star. Each actor has had their own segue into the mysterious and macabre movies over the years, so their team up for this remake is truly malevolently magical. And just in time for Christmas Day. TRUE CRIME JUNKIE
WITH AMELIA ADKINS
The Menendez Brothers: Could They Walk Free?
In 1989, Erik and Lyle Menendez, just 18 and 21 at the time, brutally murdered their parents José and Kitty Menendez, in the family’s lavish home. The Menendez family’s picture-perfect life shattered when Lyle and Erik fired multiple rounds at their parents in what was described as an execution-style murder.
The boys initially staged the crime as a botched robbery, but as investigators probed deeper, the brothers emerged as the prime suspects. A pivotal piece of evidence in the investigation was an audiotape made by their therapist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, to whom the brothers had confessed. This recording led to their arrest, and the nation watched as the trial unfolded.
The ensuing trial became one of the first to capture national attention as it aired on live television, introducing viewers to the high-stakes world of courtroom drama—which we still enjoy today and has grown increasingly popular. Now, over three decades later, there's talk that 2024 might be the year the Menendez brothers are granted freedom.
The trial's details were complex and controversial. Initially, the Menendez brothers claimed they acted in self-defense, describing years of alleged sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by their father.
According to them, their mother was complicit, enabling the abuse. Defense attorneys argued that the abuse pushed them into a corner, making them believe that killing their parents was their only way out. It was an argument that split the public—and it continues to do so today.
In 1996, both Erik and Lyle were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They’ve spent these years separated in different prisons, each confined to a life of routine and reflection far removed from the luxury they once knew. But now, with evolving legal perspectives on abuse and trauma, their case has come under a fresh spotlight.
The Menendez brothers’ defense, rooted in claims of prolonged abuse, resonates differently today than it did in the ’90s. Recent shifts in public and legal opinion have led to a different understanding of how abuse impacts victims’ mental health and decision-making, particularly when it comes to the intense pressure felt by young people under the control of powerful abusers. The re-evaluation of trauma as a factor in criminal cases has led some to wonder if the Menendez brothers might be granted parole or even a new trial.
The power of social media has added fuel to this fire. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have introduced the Menendez story to a new generation, many of whom are moved by the idea that these young men, if they were truly victims of abuse, might not deserve a life sentence. Advocacy groups, backed by a growing number of online supporters, are now fighting for a closer look at the case, pointing to what they say is overlooked evidence of trauma and abuse.
The California parole board will have reviewed the Menendez case around Thanksgiving, we should have an update on that by now, marking what could be a major turning point. Should they be granted parole, the brothers would step into a world vastly different from the one they left in 1989. They’d also face public scrutiny, with many still believing that they committed cold-blooded, premeditated murders. But to others, they represent a case study in how trauma can alter a person’s life path in tragic, irreversible ways.
The possibility of their release is sparking intense debate. Can years of suffering justify the choice to take two lives? And if they truly believed they were in danger, was this act of violence a tragic last resort? If the Menendez brothers do walk free, it will likely be after a fierce battle in the court of public opinion—and yet another chapter in a case that has haunted the American psyche for decades.
This beauty treatment has been popping up everywhere, from dermatology clinics to our favorite tanning salons—and now, even in home devices. Red light therapy is making waves for its skin-rejuvenating powers, but how exactly does it work, and what should you expect from it? I recently tried both an at-home red light mask and the red-light bed at Palm Beach Tan, and I’m here to share the results.
Let’s start with what it is and how it works. Red light therapy (RLT) uses wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the deep layers of skin that other treatments

We all need therapy, and if you’ve been hearing the buzz about red light therapy, you’re not alone!
simply can’t touch. Red light wavelengths, when absorbed by skin cells, help to kick-start collagen production, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. The result? Firmer, brighter, and more eventoned skin over time. Pretty big promises for a noninvasive treatment!
The list of benefits sounds almost too good to be true: improved skin elasticity, minimized wrinkles, and enhanced skin tone. But it’s not just about vanity; the antiinflammatory effects can also be helpful for acne, rosacea, and eczema, making it a favorite among those with sensitive or troubled skin.
With consistent use, red light therapy can:
1. Boost Collagen and Elastin: Helping skin retain a plumper, youthful look.
2. Enhance Skin Tone and Texture: By improving blood flow, it gives you that glow-from-within look.
3. Reduce Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Softening crow’s feet, smile lines, and other telltale signs of aging.
4. Speed Up Healing: The antiinflammatory properties are especially helpful for acne-prone skin or after cosmetic treatments.
My At-Home Experience: The RedLight Mask
I started my journey with a red-light mask at home on the recommendation from a friend. Though there are many options that have equally impressive reviews and at several price points, I purchased the Cleopatra LED Mask (caught it on sale for about $200). The mask is easy to use, adjustable, and fits comfortably. However, it does scare my kids a little bit….be prepared to look like an evil robot.
Sacrifices, am I right?
I used it for 20 minutes, three times a week. The gentle red glow felt relaxing, almost like a mini spa break, but I was also curious (and a little skeptical) about the long-term results.
After a few weeks, I noticed subtle changes: my skin felt a little firmer, and there was a new brightness and clarity to the tone. It’s not an instant miracle (no topical product or device really is), but with consistent use, the mask delivered a more even tone and smoother texture.
An at-home red light mask is ideal for those of us who love a little self-care ritual, and it’s a great option if you want to dip your toes into red-light therapy without committing to expensive spa treatments.
Red Light Bed at Palm Beach Tan
For a more powerful treatment, I headed to Palm Beach Tan to try their red-light therapy experience. They have a strong red light for your face and decolletage, and sunbeds that incorporate red light for the whole body. These beds are larger, more intense versions of home devices, and they cover the entire body. You lie down, relax, and let the red light do its work.
I’m not someone who uses tanning beds, so I opted for the face light. After my first session, my skin had that fresh, “just-wokeup” glow. I committed to a few sessions to gauge results, and by the end of my trial period, the difference was noticeable. My skin felt firmer, and the tone was smoother—
it is definitely more powerful than my at home device. However, using both is a great option if you can swing it. A once per week treatment at the salon and the home device for maintenance…
Things to Keep in Mind
Consistency is key with red light therapy. Whether using a mask at home or a professional bed, don’t expect dramatic changes overnight. Most people start seeing real results after a few weeks of regular use.
Red-light therapy is also gentle, meaning there’s no downtime. However, results may vary depending on your skin type and age. For me, the combination of the at-home mask and occasional sessions at Palm Beach Tan worked well: my skin feels refreshed, and I love that natural glow.
Is Red Light Therapy Right for You?
If you’re looking to elevate your skincare routine with something that’s both relaxing and results-driven (and noninvasive) red light therapy could be a great option. Home devices are convenient, while sessions at a salon or clinic offer a more potent dose of those beneficial red-light rays.
With patience and regular use, red light therapy can give your skin the boost it needs to look fresher, firmer, and more radiant. Give it a try.
"WITH PATIENCE AND REGULAR USE, RED LIGHT THERAPY CAN GIVE YOUR SKIN THE BOOST IT NEEDS TO LOOK FRESHER, FIRMER, AND MORE RADIANT."
A QUICK FIT
WITH THOMAS BLANE
QUICK FIT WITH THE PIT
Hey you all, welcome back to another edition of QUICK FIT, brought to you by me, Thomas Blane. **cheers/ applause/keys to the city awarded** Settle down. Settle down. Well, I wanted to get us started on another adventure to this cool gym I found for us. It's called The Pit Barbell Club. Now you might be saying to yourself, “TJ! Where did you find this amazing place!?” I train here full time and I couldn't think of a better place to show off than my own gym. But I don't want to be the one to brag about it. I decided to ask other people I saw at the gym what they love about training at The Pit. Personally, I would give this place all
the stars if I could but that wouldn't be fair. So, I got the perspective of a few long-time gym members and trainers. Let’s get to the heart of the matter.
There’s Power in that there Alley
Meet George. George has been at the gym for a few years now. George was just getting started with his deadlift day when he was stationed in Power Alley of the gym. This area is where everyone goes to hit the free weights. The entire area is covered with awards, records, trophies and just years of success. I asked George, “What makes you love
this gym and why have you been going to only this gym?” He replied, “Well, it's mainly the atmosphere. You feel like you're getting stronger just by walking in. You look around and see names that have been on the board for years or recently added and you get excited! I love that when I come here, I can really feel relaxed and in my zone. Everyone here just seems to be locked in on getting that personal win. It’s that old school feeling that the gym resonates.”
We came, We Saw, We Stayed Pit Strong
I just so happened to walk in the other day at The Pit to see Caroline hard at work, training one of her awesome clients, Karen. These two are also longtime members of the gym. I was sure they would have a great reason why they love it. Karen told me that when she walks in, she doesn't feel intimidated, and she feels like she can do anything thanks to Caroline and the people that come in. She said anytime she needs help there is always someone willing to assist her and they never make her feel like an outsider. She also shared that it just feels like a safe place to be for someone her age (You're only as
old as you feel). Caroline agreed and said for the ladies, it is nice to know we have very respectful individuals here. She remembered a time she was waiting on a client and a member asked her if she wanted him to stay there until the client arrived because she was the only one there at the time. She said that really stuck out for her and made her see how much of a family this place is. Once you join, you are a member for life it seems. I said, “That's awesome girls. What else can you tell me that you like about the place? Caroline replied, “I think the coolest thing that we have that most people don't have is our own POWERLIFTING TEAM. You don't need to be the strongest or a certain age. If you are a member at the gym, you are more than welcome to join the lifting team and compete. They even host meets at the gym a few times a year.”
Join the Club
There you have it. I don't think I could have said it better myself. This gym is just something you need to experience. It's not just the array of equipment, but the people and atmosphere that hooks you. When we say family, I mean we are family through the good and bad. Dick Connor,
the original pit boss, still trains people here to this day and he's always willing to speak to you and give a helpful tip or just talk life with you. Mike and Lana Stagg, the most recent owners of this historic gym, are great people and they set out to make this gym a place like no other in town. BIG CAT’S CORNER
WITH JOSHUA "BIG CAT" PIETROWSKI
PROFILES IN EVANSVILLE SPORTS: BRANDON MCCLISH
Brandon McClish and I first connected, years ago, over an open-faced Beef Manhattan. We had known of each other for a short while due to our time spent in many of the same circles but had never taken the time to sit down for a pint or a meal, and really become friends. We hit it off well, considering all we had in common. Brandon went to USI. Big Cat went to USI. Brandon grew up watching Michigan Football. Big Cat grew up watching Michigan Football. Brandon spent some time working with the Evansville Otters.
Big Cat is currently in the middle of a very fun, productive relationship with our hometown Frontier League ball club as he types this piece. McClish worked for the Evansville Aces, and Big Cat was at every one of those home games at the Ford Center. Only, while Brandon had a microphone in his hand, Big Cat had a beer. But when it comes to how well I relate to the Executive Director of the Evansville Sports Corporation, what matters most to me is our shared love of Evansville, Indiana, and how we both maintain our proximity to this city through the avenue of sports.
McClish got his start working in athletics while studying at the University of Southern Indiana. While studying there, he worked for the university’s athletic department, and then later with the Evansville Otters. If you’ve been attending games at Bosse Field for over a decade, I’m sure you remember him trouncing around the confines, letting everyone know that it was, in fact, time to “pluck the polyp”.
He’s also no stranger to taverns, but not in a bad way. He was raised in Elwood, Indiana by a single mother who worked in local establishments, including a long stint at Wolfe’s Tavern, where at eight years old McClish would ride his bike to after school, and pick up shifts as a dishwasher or a bus-boy. His payment? A heaping plate of open-faced Roast Beef Manhattan. Even now, talking to Brandon about his favorite dish, it’s hard not to notice his eyes glazing over as he waxes on romantically about the glorious amalgamation of roast meat, mashed potato, and beef-base gravy that he has personally deemed the pinnacle of modern American culinary achievement. It’s the simple things, I guess.
When it was time for him to move into a more professional role, McClish signed on as the General Manager of Purple Aces Sports Properties. It didn’t take long for a young man as affable and genuine as Brandon McClish to win over leadership in both the local sports and food and beverage communities, as he took his sales position and decided to “focus on the relationships, not the dollar, at the end of the day.” This is when I got to know Brandon and have not only considered him an important business contact, but a good friend ever since. In fact, the pint we shared to catch up for this piece was also used to just catch up with each other, in general. It was easily the most solid hour of my day, that day.
McClish finally took the next step in his athletic career a few years ago as he took the helm of the Evansville Sports Corporation, as Executive
Director. It turned out that when one of the city’s most important athletics organizations is hiring for its most important position, the kid from Elwood, Indiana, who not only spent time working with USI, U of E, and the Evansville Otters (the holy trinity of Evansville’s local sports scene), who had also made a name for himself as a bright, hardworking young salesman and friend in almost every athletic office and bar in Evansville… was the perfect fit for the job. “My entire life has been sports, Big Cat”, he said near the end of our sit down.
As someone who has also found a way for their love of sports to turn into how they pay their mortgage, I found myself relating to Brandon McClish, once again. “I really do believe that I have the best job in the city. I really feel like I am the luckiest guy in the world”, he closed with. And I can tell you, the guy deserves it. I bet the sports fan sitting on the barstool next to you right now agrees with me, too.
Now, McClish takes his breadth of experience working for the city and aims to continue bringing us new, fun, and exciting events to look forward to as a community. From washing dishes in the back of Wolfe’s Tavern, to signing major contracts to bring things like the Ohio Valley Conference tourney into town, to that rare moment where he actually gets to kick back realize just how “lucky” he is, it’s hard to say what’s next for the young man. But for now, I guess, just keep the Beef Manhattans coming.
Thanks for listening!
Ispecifically remember one day after I first started making beer at Turoni’s Main Street Brewery when I had decided to make an announcement. During a brew, I puffed my chest out and told Jack, who was the head brewer there at the time, that my ultimate end goal was to one day be “the best brewer in Evansville, Indiana.” And I’ll never forget what he said to me.
I often tell people that John Mills and I “came up together” as brewers, but the truth is, he’s outpaced me on a couple different levels. Yes, John and I both hit two significant milestones in our food and beverage career right alongside each other, as we both became the head brewers of two of Evansville’s burgeoning craft breweries at the same time, and we both set out, and took the risk of owning our own small business concurrently back in 2018. But John Mills has quite a bit more experience in a brewhaus than I ever will, and what’s more, as a brewer, he is far more decorated and respected than I could ever hope to be.
Mills began his craft brewing journey as most of us currently in the game have, as a home brewer. He spent some time researching and planning, bought some equipment, and at some point in 1993 had brewed his first batch of home-brew beer. He spent nearly
PEOPLE YOU SHOULD MEET: JOHN MILLS
two decades honing his craft at home, batch after batch, and in 2012 when a brand-new brewery named ‘Carson’s’ was ready to open its doors, John had established enough clout to earn the Head Brewer position there. Craft beer was now paying his mortgage.
As a home brewer, John gained quite a bit of notoriety in the Indiana brewing community when he won Best in Show at the Indiana State Fair in 2010. His accolades and awards as a professional brewer swiftly followed, as he swept the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Fest awards in 2013 with his Red Dawn Red India Pale Ale, brewed right here on the North Side of Evansville.
In 2018, Mills decided it was time, and took the big scary step that was opening his own brewery. Now, he didn’t just have to make bad-ass beer, but it was his job to keep the lights on, too. John Mills settled into what is now Damsel Brew Pub and immediately started churning out both classic American styles as well and insanely innovative recipes, each one named after a female he either knew, or maybe even made up in his mind. Damsel Brew Pub is still pouring his fine product today, and is more than worth a trip across town, or stopping in whenever you find yourself out and about on Wabash avenue.
In my experience, the only thing John Mills is better at than brewing, is being a friend. I think that if he charged a modest consultant’s fee for every time I called with a question or needed help back in the Turoni’s days, or even now as we begin preparations to brew our own beer at Patsy Hartigan’s in 2025, I would be saddled with a debt that “no honest man could pay.” But John answers his phone every time and is always willing to help. I just try to remember to pick up the tab on pints for the two of us whenever I can, and I’m getting the better end of that deal.
I still have that goal, you know. I’ve honestly never been the type of person to try something and not want to be the best at it, to not want to win at it, in essence. I think I would still really like to be the best brewer in Evansville, Indiana, one day. But every time I ponder that lofty goal, my mind drifts back to a moment in a brewhaus on Main Street, over fourteen years ago. I can see a twentysomething Big Cat prophesying “I’m going to be the best, one day”, and I can vividly see, hear, and feel Jack Frey looking back at me, saying, “Well, you’re going to have to wait for John Mills to retire.”
Thanks for listening!

Steve Strait PROFILE
Steve Strait is an Evansville artist who exhibits at Damsel Brew Pub and has material at the Haynie’s Corner Brewery. Strait works in a pop art style, often portraying celebrities, musicians, and sports figures. Some of his paintings are realistic, while others have been exaggerated into caricatures. Sometimes he’ll do his own take on cartoon characters. “I always liked comic book art but I like abstract and some of the old Flemish painters too,” he said. “I like to do stuff that’s fun and relatable to people,” he said. “I took a painting class when I was in college at Murray State University, and I don’t think my teacher thought I was a very good painter, because in nature there aren’t solid black lines, but I do it my own way.”
Strait paints in acrylic on canvas and sometimes wood, using strong lines and usually producing pieces in the extremes of bold black and white or bright primary colors. “I usually work from photographs,” he said. “I always change it to make sure it’s different from the original picture and that it’s unique. Maybe it’s from an old magazine, but I’ll make a hodgepodge, make it my own. I’ll put layers of color down, even though I like to go straight to the details. I really like working in black and white best.”
His subjects range from Taylor Swift to Betty White, Snoop Dogg, Miss Piggy and Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks. He also has painted a few local characters such as Scott Schymik,
Josh Pietrowski and Alan Braun of the new Hartigan’s Irish Pub. He’s available for commissions as well and can make a photo of you and your significant other look as cool as, for example, that one he did of the Cryptkeeper from Tales from the Crypt, or Vincent and Jules from Pulp Fiction.
Strait is a home brewer of beer and has known Damsel owner John Mills through the Ohio Valley Homebrewers Association for many years. The group holds monthly meetings at Damsel, and Strait takes the opportunity to keep his collection of pieces fresh – or those that haven’t sold, at any rate.
If you check out his work at Damsel, expect to see female subjects. “I usually put paintings of women at Damsel to go with the theme of the bar,” Strait said. “I put several up and they tend to sell pretty quickly.” Strait’s original paintings usually sell for between $100 and $150, unless the work is unusually large. Prints go for $50 to $75.

PARALLELS IN LIFE WITH JEREMIAH GALEY
Hello, friends. My name is Jeremiah Galey. I’m a nearly two-decade veteran of the local food and hospitality industry. I own (along with my beautiful wife, Kimmy) and operate Bad Randy’s Hot Chicken & BBQ Lounge. This column is the mumblings and bumblings of introspection and parallels in life.
Working in a restaurant requires discipline, especially working in the kitchen. If you stick around long enough and care about what you’re doing, you will build that discipline. If you actively want to be better, you will be. To some, it’s just a job. To the same people, any job is just a job. Although I don’t share that ideology, I do appreciate the candor. But to others, we want something more than a job. We want fulfillment. We want satisfaction. We want to put in that hard work to feel the payoff.
I can’t tell you how many “qualified” candidates I’ve hired or worked with through the years. Qualified on paper, that is. Countless culinary school graduates entering the workforce, ready to apply their skills and knowledge to real world applications. Most of them? Green as can be and won’t last but a week or two. For anyone interested in a degree in the hospitality business, I urge you to first work in the business before making that choice. A degree is only as good as your intentions, and if you have
never worked a kitchen job, going to culinary school is a risky endeavor. I’m ALL for education, but the discipline in application is more important. What good is your culinary degree if you can’t work a busy line shift during service?
This isn’t meant to discourage anyone from entering the industry or attending secondary education, but rather to focus on what YOU want. Life is short. You should work a job you enjoy, or at the very least you don’t actively dislike. Like the culinary students, what you get out of a job is relative to the effort you put in. If you go to school just to go to school and don’t really care about what you’re working on, you’re going to hate your job (and probably be bad at it) and your degree will be worthless.
Society puts a ton of pressure on young people to figure out their entire lives’ trajectory before they even turn 18.
Junior year of high school or earlier, they’re supposed to have their college plans worked out and jobs ready to go. That’s batshit crazy, and a formula for
misery. As my dad might say, never halfass anything. Whole-ass everything. So, figure out what you like, and whole-ass the absolute hell out of it.
“My dear,
Find what you love and let it kill you. Let it drain you of your all. Let it cling onto your back and weigh you down into eventual nothingness. Let it kill you, and let it devour your remains. For all things will kill you, both slowly and fastly, but it’s much better to be killed by a lover.
Falsely yours, Henry Charles Bukowski”

Welcome to Ask Madam Faye, where intuition meets insight!
Local psychic and advisor Madam Faye offers guidance to your deepest questions—be it love, career, family, or the mysteries of life itself. With years of experience connecting to energies beyond the everyday, Madam Faye brings clarity and wisdom to light. Curious what the cards, stars, or your own energy field might reveal? Write in and let Madam Faye illuminate your path!
Q: I’m not sure what to ask. What are the most common types of questions people ask you during readings?
A: Many clients seek clarity in love, career, and life purpose—these are by far the most common themes. People want to know if they’re on the right path, whether a relationship has a future, or how to overcome life’s challenges. Others are drawn to questions about their spiritual growth, such as connecting with their higher self or understanding recurring signs. And sometimes, they simply want guidance on what’s next. No question is too small if it’s meaningful to you—it’s all about what’s in your heart.
Q: How do you empower your clients to use their information from their readings?
A: I tell my clients to have trust. To trust the process and know that there are good things in the future for them. It’s entirely up to them
to work to achieve those good things. They have the power over their lives.
Q: What does that look like? How does a person use that information to move forward positively?
A: Much of the advice I give, is simply that, advice. It’s practical, good advice. Not everything we talk about will seem mystical. I assess the situation and the person, and I give them good advice on how to take care of themselves. I give them information on how to make choices that will benefit their health and well-being. From vitamins and supplements, to setting emotional boundaries with loved ones, I aim to leave my clients with real world advice they can use to grow and be their healthiest selves.
and illuminate, not to replace professional advice. I also honor free will; I’ll never predict something that could remove your ability to shape your own path. Integrity is my guiding principle in every reading.
Q: Do you ever turn someone away or refuse to answer a question during a reading?
A: Perhaps not turn someone away, experiences here are typically very positive. And, if someone is going out of their way to come see me, they are open to the reading. They chose to be here. But yes, there are times I will gently decline to answer certain questions, or don’t reveal everything I feel. If a query feels invasive, harmful, or outside my scope—such as medical or legal matters—I’ll redirect the conversation toward what is more appropriate or helpful. My role is to empower

Q: Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) impacting your law practice and if
so,
how?
A:AI is absolutely impacting our law firm’s practice. In thinking about AI, I would divide AI into two broad categories. One category being AI that is more generic, such as ChatGPT. The second category is AI that is specific to law, such as Casetext’s Co-Counsel platform.
We sometimes use ChatGPT to help with marketing, advertising, and sentence structuring. However, we do not use ChatGPT to conduct legal research. ChatGPT can “hallucinate” and literally make up legal cases and answers that don’t otherwise exist. Indeed, in the legal industry, there is now a famous example of a lawyer that used ChatGPT to write a legal brief and the lawyer then filed it with the Court. When opposing counsel and the Court began to look at the
cases cited, they could not find them. The legal citations appeared to be false. When the lawyer who filed the brief was confronted, he eventually admitted that he used ChatGPT. As you might imagine this lawyer got into trouble.
However, AI that is tailored to law firms and the legal practice are more reliable and can be useful for tasks, such as the following:
• Deposition summaries
• Legal Research and research memos
• Timelines
• Predicting outcomes from hearings and legal issues
• Comparing two documents
• Uploading evidence for a case and then asking AI questions to answer from the evidence

• Drafting motions, letters, briefs and proposed orders.
Of course, legal focused AI is not perfect, and documents generated still must be checked and revised if necessary. It is my opinion that moving forward the integration of AI and law will only continue to intensify.
For example, AI vehicle features increasingly impacts our personal injury practice. As time goes on, there will only be more self-driving, driver assist and automated safety features on vehicles. While these changes may overall be good, there will undoubtedly be a lot of litigation about whether the AI vehicle features are functioning properly.
As tax season approaches, many people look forward to their tax refunds. For some, it's a chance to catch up on bills, treat themselves, or save for a rainy day. But what if you used this year’s refund to invest in something that provides long-term stability and financial growth? Instead of spending it on something fleeting, consider using it to buy a home. For first-time homebuyers, a tax refund can be a crucial step toward homeownership, helping you build equity and secure your future.
Why Owning Is Better Than Renting
If you've been renting for years, the idea of owning a home might seem daunting. But the benefits of homeownership can make the transition worthwhile.
1. Equity: When you pay rent, you're building someone else’s equity. Homeownership, however, allows you to build equity for yourself. As you pay down your mortgage and as your home’s value increases, your equity grows — which can be used for future needs like home improvements, education, or retirement savings.
2. Stability & Control: Renting often comes with uncertainty—unexpected rent hikes, changes in lease agreements, or landlords deciding to sell. Owning a home gives you stability and control over your living situation. No more worrying about rent increases or being forced to move when your lease ends. It’s your home, and you control what happens within those walls.
So, How Do You Leverage Your Tax Refund to Help with Buying a Home?
One of the biggest barriers to homeownership is saving for a down payment. But here’s the good news: your tax refund can be an excellent source of funds to help cover this initial expense. For many prospective homebuyers, a tax

refund represents a lump sum of cash that can be directed toward the down payment if needed, OR, if you qualify for a loan program that DOESN’T require a down payment, your refund can still be used for closing costs, or updates you want to make to your new home. Homebuyers can possibly qualify for programs that require as little as 3.5% down, and some special programs for veterans and active-duty military members, local or federal grant programs, or homes in rural communities even qualify for zero-down payment options.
Can You Buy a Home with Less Than Perfect Credit?
Many people hesitate to explore homeownership because they think poor credit will disqualify them. The truth is, it may be easier than you think. Lenders consider more than just your credit score when determining eligibility. They also evaluate your income, employment history, and other factors. Programs like FHA, USDA, and VA loans are specifically designed to help first-time homebuyers or those with less-than-perfect credit.
How Do You Start the Process of Seeing if You are Ready for Homeownership?
If you’re thinking about buying a home, the first step is to consult with a knowledgeable REALTOR®. REALTORS® are members of the National Association of REALTORS® and follow a strict code of ethics. Their expertise can help guide you through the home-buying process and provide valuable insights.

Homeownership doesn’t have to be a distant dream—it can be a reality that brings longterm stability and personal satisfaction. By using your tax refund wisely, understanding your mortgage options, and working with a knowledgeable REALTOR®, you can turn your tax return into the key to your new home.
If you’ve been considering buying a home but feel uncertain, now is the time to take the first step. Contact a REALTOR® to explore your options, simplify the mortgage process, and guide you through your journey to homeownership. The dream of owning a home is closer than you think— and this tax season could be the perfect opportunity to turn your dream into reality.

DECEMBER MUSIC REVIEWS
HALSEY The Great Impersonator Columbia Records
Halsey collaborated with Tyler Johnson, Emile Haynie, Alex G, Greg Kurstin and Michael Uzowuru for her fifth studio album. They all brought something to the table to help the iconic pop-artist develop her first concept album, traveling through decades of music to capture how she would sound as an artist in each one. This is Halsey’s most deeply personal collection of songs to date, touching on her thoughts of life and death after being diagnosed with lupus. Her signature voice mixed with the rawness of her lyrics make this album incredibly impactful. Standouts include “The End,” “Lonely Is the Muse, “Ego,” “Lucky,” and “I Never Loved You.” Musically, Halsey infuses pop, folk and rock throughout her songs, like a chameleon shapeshifting from one genre to the next. She may be attempting to impersonate different artists, but this is the most authentic Halsey we have ever heard. 4.5 stars. -Marisa Patwa
River Entertainment
Kelsea Ballerini is back with her signature country-pop swag for her fifth studio album. She had a great partner in Alysa Vanderheym, who helped produce the tracks. To continue the girl-power momentum, Ballerini chose an all-female team to collaborate, with Karen Fairchild, Hillary Lindsey and Jessie Jo Dillion all helping to co-write. Standouts include “First Rodeo,” “Two Things,” “Sorry Mom,” and “Cowboys Cry Too” with Noah Kahan. Her softest and sweetest song, “How Much Do You Love Me,” was inspired by her relationship with boyfriend Chase Stokes. Ballerini’s girl squad on this album helped prove women do really run the world. But it is her down to earth nature and relatability that make her a likable artist with enjoyable tunes. 4 stars -Marisa Patwa
GWEN STEFANI Bouquet Interscope Records
Wrapping up this trifecta is Gwen Stefani, who too coincidentally released her fifth studio album. This is the first time we are hearing the former No Doubt singer since her Christmas album in 2017. Focusing the last few years on her role as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, Stefani is now granting us the Christmas gift of new music. She is back to her old self, utilizing ska and reggae, while experimenting with some more Nashville sounds. Standouts include country rock “Somebody Else’s” and country-pop “Swallow My Tears.” Unsurprisingly, this “Hollaback Girl” legend recruited her fellow Voice coach and husband Blake Shelton for the final track “Purple Irises.” Stefani, though, is adamant this is not a country album, but an amalgamation of her favorite genres and sounds, both old and new. 4.5 stars -Marisa Patwa
MK.GEE
Two Star and The Dream Police Independent Artist
Mk.gee, the artist formerly known as just Michael Gordon, is a college dropout and as unconventional a musician as you will find. He has been praised by Eric “Clapton is God” himself as comparably inspiring as hearing the artist formerly known as Prince for the first time. That’s a lot to take in. Mk.gee doesn’t seem to care, doesn’t want to be an image that is sold. He just wants to make the best music, he says. The effort is a solid stab at fresh. I enjoy it, but I can’t pinpoint the win. His voice is emotive and youthful but always buried in the mix and unintelligible. The guitar tones are spiky yet mellow played on a Fender Jaguar Bass VI, I’m guessing, and lope along sweetly. Also present are synth elements reminiscent of 80’s Steve Winwood, subdued and lo-fi, drums and all. Broken down like this, it doesn’t seem appealing. Yet it is. Background study music. Noninvasive but keeps your ears pricked up all the same. 4 stars -Lindsey James Williams
BLUES WITH BRAGIN
DICK EARL’S ELECTRIC WITNESS Get Up Off the Ground Self-Released
The album begins with the title track. It seems tailor made for use in a modern western TV show as Dick Earl Ericksen sings about rising after a fall. “Black Lines and White Crosses” features tight drumming from Mari Ericksen and a smooth base line from Isaac Ericksen. Dick Earl’s harmonica shines on “Eggs”, a song that gives Isaac another chance to showcase his bass playing. “Sarah” is a funky and soulful ballad about a woman who wants something more out of life and prays for a change. “I Hear You Calling” is a mostly instrumental track with brief singing the title at the end of the song. “Once Again”, a song about a woman working hard to provide for her family, features appearances by Jimmy Carpenter on saxophone, Jason Levi on trumpet and Jean-Francois Thibeault on trombone. “Wishin” features great underlying organ playing by Matt Green as Dick Earl sings about how the past formed him into the person he is today. Funky Latin vibes come through Isaac’s bass during “On Her Heart” as Dick Earl sings about a broken woman searching for salvation. “Left Standing” features poignant lyrics about receiving blessings from above as the song slides into a gospel style revival. The album ends with “Into the Fire”, another song that seems perfect for use in a western. For more information, visit www.electricwitness.com - Paul Bragin

EINSTOK DOPPELBOCK
EINSTOCK WINTER ALE
JABEZ MARTINEZ – 4
This is a clear dark amber beer with decent carbonation. I enjoyed the malted barley flavor, but I could also taste some of the light chocolate notes. They were on the lighter end of the flavor, but I still enjoyed this beer. It did have a smooth finish and left a little malt residue on my tongue. I like both beers but one more than the other, but I feel my personal preference was reflected in the scores.
PAUL BRAGIN – 4
A thick tan head rests on this beer when poured into a traditional beer mug and evaporates very slowly. The nose contains a generous amount of sweet malt notes. Similarly, the sweet malt flavors continue with the initial tasting of the beer and stay in the long finish. People who enjoy malty beer need to drink this. Pair it with meats like roast turkey, brisket, lamb chops, or desserts like chocolate cake and crème brûlée.
PAUL HOLLYFELD – 4
This German style pours a dark brown with a full tan head. On the nose, you have chocolate along with some bready notes. It is sweet and rich on the palate with flavors of chocolate and caramel. It has a mild bitterness and a long finish with a hint of bourbon. A nice cold weather, beside the firepit kind of beer.
JABEZ MARTINEZ – 4.5
This beer is a dark brown colored beer. This was a nice winter ale. It had a light smoke and a hearty malt flavor. This is a nice winter/ fall beer. It had an ABV of 8% and just seemed filling and something I would go to as I was working outside. I don't believe I have ever had a beer from this brewery, and they put out a very good product.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5
A thick tan head crowns this beer and never totally disappears. Malt notes and spices dominate the scent profile. The malt flavors remain with the first sip of the beer, followed by spruce used during the brewing process and spices in the very long finish. This beer seems well suited for a cold winter night by a roaring fireplace. Pair it with a wide selection of foods like smoked lamb, pork or dark chocolate.
PAUL HOLLYFELD – 4
This heavy ale pours a deep brown, almost black hue with a thin head. Slightly smokey on the nose due to the use of smoked barley, with maybe a hint of pine owed to the spruce tips used in its brew. On the palette IT is more of the same, and while malty, there is enough bitterness to cut the sweetness of this high ABV ale (8.0%). This is a truly unique ale, and like the doppelbock, perfectly suited for a campfire setting.

KNOBCREEK SMALL BATCH RYE
Knob Creek Small Batch Rye: A Balanced and Smooth Rye
INGREDIENTS
• 2 oz bourbon or whiskey
Knob Creek Small Batch Rye, crafted by Jim Beam, stands out as a smooth rye whiskey. While its “100 proof” label may make people worried, this rye offers a blend of sweet, and earthy notes that make it a versatile choice for both sipping neat and mixing in cocktails.
Nose: The aroma would be described as a relaxing combination, with fresh apple and oak mixing together well to create a soft taste that is manageable for most people. There's an underlying layer of smokey syrup that you can taste on the back of the whiskey that adds depth.
• 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 tsp simple syrup)
• 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
DIRECTIONS:
Palate: On the palate, you'll find light amounts of rye grain, citrus, vanilla, and oak. The sip is light overall for a rye, with a slight spiciness on initial taste, the heat fades away quickly leaving a layer of light rye and oak that makes it easy to enjoy without any burn.
Value: At around $40, Knob Creek Rye offers excellent value for its price. It's not extremely unique in terms of taste. It's not overly sweet and holds back on being extremely ryeforward, but this balance makes it a versatile option for cocktails and neat pours alike.
• Orange peel (for garnish)
• Cherry (optional)
• Optional: burn oak chips on top of glass covering with beer glass
1. Muddle the sugar cube and bitters in an Old Fashioned glass until the sugar dissolves. If you’re using simple syrup, just add it with the bitters.
2. Add the bourbon and a large ice cube, then stir gently.
3. Garnish with a twist of orange peel, and optionally, a cherry.
4. Enjoy!
Landon Miller is a Kentucky native and former bartender with a passion for bourbon and spirits, bringing experience and love for his home state's rich distilling tradition to offer honest, insightful reviews for fellow enthusiasts.
Overall: Knob Creek Small Batch Rye is an enjoyable whiskey that delivers a consistent and satisfying experience. Whether you're a fan of the rye genre or new to the category, this whiskey is worth a try.
Here’s a classic Old Fashioned recipe that would complement this rye whiskey:
