THE TRIFECTA OF GOOD TASTE: 11TH ANNUAL EVENT OFFERS UP THE TRI-STATE'S BEST LIVE MUSIC, FOOD AND WINE The 2017 edition of the Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival marked a change in scenery as organizers waved goodbye to Main Street after nine remarkable years and moved house a relatively short distance to Locust Street between the Civic Center Plaza and Old National Events Plaza. New location, same fantastic turnout. In fact, the ease of parking and layout of the venue only added to the festival's appeal as thousands flocked to downtown Evansville for an evening of the tri-state's best live music, food and wine. So, it's no surprise that the 2018 Kenny Kent Jazz & Wine Festival is back for a Locust Street encore, serving up samplings from 13 area wineries and 12 restaurants with music from 12 fabulous jazz bands on three stages. And as in the past, proceeds go to fund the efforts of the Evansville Philharmonic Guild whose mission is to support the education of community youth to live orchestral music through school programs and Lollipops concerts as well as the Helen McKinney youth concerts. While proceeds go to educate the community's youth, the Jazz & Wine Festival is a 21+ event for adults who enjoy adult beverages - really tasty adult beverages, that is. The region's top vintners will once again assemble in the heart of downtown Evansville for your drinking pleasure, so bring your friends for an evening of fine wine and fine food and chill to the sounds of smooth jazz wafting through the (end of) summer air. Entrance gate is at 9th & Locust Streets. For tickets and more info, visit evansvillejazzfest.com.

PARKSFEST 2018 G ARVIN PARK | SEPTEM BER 8

It's been a long wait, but Evansville's biggest outdoor music festival is back with a bang. The 2016 edition of ParksFest drew 10,000 people to Garvin Park for a full day of live music, food and drinks, art and much more, but organizers took the following year off to re-group. Judging by the amazing lineup of national, regional and local acts assembled for the festival's triumphant return, they've been very busy in the interim, working hard to ensure that September 8 will be a day to remember. What makes ParksFest so special - in addition to the great live music - is its focus on community, providing a family-friendly atmosphere with lots of activities for the kids, including bounce houses and children's inflatables. For the adults, there's a beer garden and plenty of fun to be had! 2018 PARKSFEST LINEUP Deer Tick - These Rhode Island indie rockers are a decade deep into a celebrated career highlighted by legendary live performances across the nation. Adia Victoria - This Nashville singer-songwriter has the market cornered on swampy, back porch blues. Thunder Dreamer - Straight out of Evansville, T/D's irresistible mix of indie rock and dream pop has translated to national tours and critical acclaim for the band's most recent release, Capture. Calabash - Another Evansville treasure, this über-talented jam band recently performed for the 100th time at Lamasco Bar & Grill. Keló Kaddafi - Local hip-hop at its finest, Keló Kaddafi commands the stage like a boss. The Jangle Sheep - This tri-state quartet fuses together elements of rock, progressive rock, punk and a little Phish for a truly original sound. Salt the Earth - Call it prog-grass; Evansville's Salt the Earth turns traditional bluegrass on its head. Kenna Elpers - A star in the making, this North Posey High School sophomore was named WKDQ’s 2017 Taste of Country Hometown Riser. For more info, visit parksfestevansville.com.

ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER DAR WILLIAMS HEADLINES THE TRI-STATE'S FAVORITE ECO-FRIENDLY MUSIC FESTIVAL Located just an hour north of Evansville, the Ferdinand Folk Fest is a free, eco-friendly event featuring a diverse lineup of musicians representing the best in Americana, folk, reggae, roots blues and more. Away from the main stage, local singer-songwriters perform for the art market - a whole separate festival unto itself. There, regional artists and artisans display and sell their handmade work, including pottery, photography, clothing and jewelry. In addition, numerous environmental and community groups congregate to educate festival goers about everything from air quality to solar energy and organic farming. And there's plenty for the kids to do, so bring the whole family for a full day of live music and fun, thought-provoking activities. 2018 Lineup Dar Williams - This year's festival headliner is a critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter from Cold Spring, NY, whose most recent album, 2015's Emerald, drew comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. The Last Revel - Out of Minneapolis, this passionate, soul-stirring trio employs traditional three-part harmonies and instrumentation to offset its raw, rebellious attitude. Appalatin - Merging Kentucky-raised musicians and masterful Latin émigrés from Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, Appalatin blends traditional guitar, mandolin, upright bass, charango, indigenous Andean flutes, hand percussion, harmonica, and vocal harmonies to create a truly unique sound. Heather Maloney - Critically acclaimed by SPIN magazine, the New York Times, Huffington Post, and the Boston Globe, this Massachusetts singer-songwriter is celebrating the release of her 2018 EP Just Enough Sun. Bridge 19 - With insightful lyrics and beautiful, soothing harmonies, Louisville's Bridge 19 fuses Appalachian folk with bluegrass tradition augmented by folk/pop arrangements. Zion - With a classic reggae vibe and spoken word vocal delivery, Evansville's Zion spreads a message of love, hope, unity, and peace. Brother, Son - Based in southern Indiana, this folk/Americana trio made a big splash with last year's debut EP, Prodigal. For more info, visit ferdinandfolkfestival.com.

FIFTH ANNUAL MULTI-CULTURAL FESTIVAL BRINGING COMMUNITY TOGETHER FOR COLORFUL DISPLAY OF DIVERSITY

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

It may have all started with the intent of bringing the area's Latino population together in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, but over the past four years, Fiesta Evansville has evolved into an all-inclusive celebration of diversity, welcoming people of all backgrounds, regardless of nationality. Founder and organizer Abraham Brown sums up the hugely popular event with one word: "community."

Kickoff: EVPL Central Library (9/15) Featuring a Mariachi band, folkloric dancers, internationally celebrated Latino authors, Latino food vendors, and lots of fun for all ages. Sponsored by the EVPL, Fiesta Evansville and the Evansville Latino Center

Now gearing up for the festival's fifth annual gathering, he's clearly excited about the move to the downtown Evansville riverfront (where Mayor Winnecke will christen the proceedings with the releasing of balloons) after previously holding the event at Wesselman Park and the Goebel Soccer Complex. And Brown is particularly grateful for the generosity of RE/MAX which has kindly volunteered to bring not one, but three hot air balloons to the event to make it a truly colorful occasion. "We want Fiesta Evansville to be very colorful to celebrate our diversity," he says. But perhaps the most anticipated addition to this year's festival is the inaugural Balloon Parade. Annually, over 100 tri-state agencies set up booths at the event - only this time they'll also have the opportunity to compete for $1000 by constructing a float made out of balloons (the "most beautiful" wins) to be displayed in the aforementioned parade. "We want to help these agencies have fun and showcase what they're doing and maybe even get a prize," Brown says. He's also invited six consulates from Columbia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Venezuela, respectively, and lined up 60 food vendors from 20 different countries, inflatables, live music, folkloric dancers and more - a full day of diversity to reflect the colorful nature of our community! For more info, follow Fiesta Evansville on Facebook.

2018 INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE SEMIFINALISTS KING BEE & THE STINGERS HEADLINE A FULL DAY OF LIVE MUSIC, FOOD AND FUN

There's no better time to be a blues fan than September in the tri-state with not one, but two major festivals featuring many of the region's most revered acts bookending the month. Kicking things off, there's the annual Blues on the Rock in Rockport, IN on September 2nd followed just a few weeks later by the one of the area's most anticipated outdoor musical events, the Burdette Blues Festival. Presented by the River Basin Blues Society and Stop Light City Park Foundation, this family-friendly, all-day concert is highlighted by a fantastic lineup of bands as well as local food vendors offering up delicious eats plus a 21+ beer garden because nothing goes down smoother with the blues than a cold one under the sun. Now, on to the music. Let's get to know the bands that will make this year's Burdette Blues Festival another big success... 2PM: RJ RIGDON & THE PRIMAL ROOTS - Opening the festival with an essential dose of true blues, this Evansville trio comprising frontman RJ Rigdon plus bassist DS Lloyd and drummer David Rigdon has a knack for bringing crowds to their feet. 4PM: JONAS SCOTT COWAN AND THE MOTHERHOUSE - With a cast of tri-state musical all-stars, this virtual supergroup is the hottest thing going in regional blues. Ace guitarist Jonas Scott Cowan is backed by some of the biggest names in the area, including "Big" Jon Rochner (bass), Stephen Offerman (drums), Roy Carter and Logan Dyer (a dual sax attack), Lacy Jean (violin) and special guest, Morgan Donahue. 6PM: 2 MILES BACK - A fixture at bars, clubs and festivals across the tri-state, 2MB puts a decidedly bluesy spin on their tasty brand of southern rock, country jams and ballads. Charismatic singer Robin Bolin leads the charge with guitarist Lary Caddell, bassist Darrell Bolin and drummer Jim Perkins bringing the musical heat. Staying seated during a 2MB set is impossible. 8PM: ALONZO PENNINGTON BAND - Fronted by award-winning guitar player Alonzo Pennington (including 3-time International Thumbpicking Guitar Champion), the longrunning, tight-knit APB is rounded out by Bobby Harper (bass), Eric Allen (sax & harp) and Justin Harper (drums). Together, they've created a soulful blend of country with a bluesy base. Or as the band's sound has been described: "a smattering of vintage Merle Travis, a dash of Stevie Ray Vaughan, a spoonful of Waylon Jennings, and a pinch of Tommy Emmanuel." 10PM: KING BEE & THE STINGERS - Semifinalists at the 2018 International Blues Challenge, KB features Sarah Menefee at the helm, a seriously talented, young vocalist whose depth of emotion is unmatched by singers twice her age. Band founder - and St. Louis bluesman - Mark “King Bee” Menefee rocks the guitar and the harp along with lead guitarist DK Buchanan, bassist Ken Meadows and drummer Eric Gaylord. They'll close out the festival in style and leave fans wanting more! General admission is $8 at the gate. Gates open at 1 p.m. Burdette Park is located at 5301 Nurrenbern Rd. in Evansville. HISTORIC NEWBURGH Ghost Walks O C T OB E R 19- 21

ORGANIZERS CELEBRATING A QUARTER CENTURY OF SCARES WITH NEW HAYRIDE TOUR AND MORE Every October for over two decades now, Historic Newburgh has served as the creepy backdrop to some truly spine-tingling tales detailing the area's haunted past. These "Ghost Walks," as they're appropriately known, always leave attendees of all ages wideeyed and entranced by their tour guide's bone-chilling stories. No monsters jump out, no blood-curdling screams echo in the night; the scares are purely psychological - and lots of fun! To celebrate 25 years of Ghost Walks, organizers are introducing a brand new Hayride Tour (limited seating available) in addition to the traditional eerie strolls down Water & State Streets. Rest assured all three tours are guaranteed to "enlighten and frighten." Water Street Tour Hear ghost stories from Newburgh's early settler days, the Civil War Era, and even ghostly events that occurred during the 1900s. Featured stories include the tale of the Steamboat Missouri and the Newburgh Tobacco Company's "Homespun Twist." State Street Tour More astonishing tales from the Civil War Era and the early 1900s, including the Great Depression, make this a spooky tour, indeed. Learn the unnerving truth about the tragedy at Farmer's Bank, the Exchange Hotel's slave history and Hulvershorn's Coffin Shop. Hayride Tour Bring your family and friends for a hayride through Historic Newburgh's downtown district as turn of the century tour guides and re-enactors regale you with mysterious ghost stories. An optional walk across the historic red bridge will only add to the intrigue. Guided walking tours depart every 12 minutes from Preservation Hall (200 State Street). Each tour lasts app. an hour. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. For tickets, visit eventbrite.com or historicnewburgh.org. Walk tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Hayride tickets are $20. PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS

BEETHOVEN, BRAHMS & BLUEGRASS VIC TO RY T H E AT R E | S EPT EMB ER 29 | 7: 3 0 P.M .

Violinist Tessa Lark takes center stage for opening night of the 2018-2019 EPO season The wait is almost over. We're now just a few weeks away from the opening night of what promises to be another spectacular run of performances courtesy of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Lending extra significance to the 2018-2019 season, Maestro Savia will be celebrating 30 years at the helm, while continuing to add to his remarkable legacy with the organization. It all should make for a truly special concert on September 29 when world-renowned violinist Tessa Lark joins the EPO for Beethoven, Brahms & Bluegrass. A Kentucky native, Lark is back by popular demand, having previously wowed fans of the Philharmonic with her unparalleled classical skills. Indeed, her resúmé speaks volumes. She's not only the recipient of a 2018 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship but also a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant and was named Silver Medalist in the 9th Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Beyond that, it's Lark's versatility that truly makes her stand out, as her talent extends to genres such as bluegrass, hip-hop, jazz, African and rock - which will be quite apparent via the performance of Love Letter, a piece composed by her fiancé, Michael Thurber. The contrast between Lark's interpretation of Beethoven and the aforementioned Love Letter will truly serve to demonstrate her instrumental prowess and have EPO fans clamoring for more. THE FULL OPENING NIGHT PERFORMANCE INCLUDES: Leonard Bernstein Candide Overture L. van Beethoven Romance No. 2 in F Major for Violin Michael Thurber Love Letter Aaron Copland Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo Johannes Brahms Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 3 & 10 Pablo de Sarasate Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) Kicking off the EPO's celebration of composer Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday, Candide Overture is sure to be a highlight of the evening along with Lark's masterful take on Zigeunerweisen, one of Sarasate's most popular compositions and a favorite among violin virtuosos. Don't miss a single note of opening night at the Victory! For tickets and more info, visit evansvillephilharmonic.org. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

NEWS4U SEPTEMBER 2018 | WHAT'S COOKIN'

MAIDENS BREWERY 209 N. WABASH AVE. OF FLAGS | EVANSVILLE, INDIANA | 812-909-1956

I, for one, will never complain about the ever-increasing number of breweries Evansville is host to. Being both a staunch supporter of local business and good beer, it’s a win-win in my eyes. And being both locally-owned and brewing up stellar suds, Maidens definitely meets both of those qualifications. But that’s far from all they do well. I met with owner John Mills II recently to try some of what they have to offer. We decided on two entrees: Their Cajun Po’ Boy and the recentlyadded Sanctuary Salad. Given that not everyone is a fan of heavy metal like John and I, you’d be forgiven for not recognizing the prevailing metal themes of both the business itself (their logo is written in the same font as the British metal purveyors, Iron Maiden) and many of the dishes (Sanctuary is a thrash metal band formed in the early ‘80s). Regardless, the food doesn’t take a Ph.D in Headbanging to appreciate. The Po’ Boy comes with your choice of shrimp, chicken, or gator. Given my penchant for things off the beaten path, I naturally chose the gator. Fried pieces of reptilian goodness are slathered in their Swamp Sauce - a concoction all of John’s making that is a blend of chilis, hot sauce, and garlic - and topped with cole slaw between two long buns. If you’ve never tried gator before (and trust me, you’re missing out if you haven’t), there isn’t a more accessible dish than this one to start with. Next up was the Sanctuary Salad. Sliced carrots, cheese, grapes, pecans, raisins, and ham sit atop a bed of greens grown hydroponically in southern Illinois. A maple mustard vinaigrette gives a sweet tanginess that perfectly complements the rest of the

20 |

SEPTEMBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

components. Since I visited around lunch time, I resisted the urge to sample their many beers brewed on-site. However, this wasn’t my first visit; I had attended a trivia event there in July, during which I was able to try not only a few drafts, but some other appetizers as well. The Head Banger Shrimp was phenomenal; its creamy sauce rivals any “Bang-Bang Shrimp” you’ll find at any seafood joint. And their pulled pork nachos is almost an entire meal unto itself. Of course, I’d be remiss without mentioning their fantastic beer selection. While they do have many offerings from other breweries, their own creations are what really stand out. The Brianna is a great Irish-style red, smooth and dry with just a hint of carmel, and the Lori is an exceptional brown ale with notes of chocolate, coffee, and more hoppiness than a normal brown without overpowering. Maidens does a great job of bringing out the best of both food and beer. Whether you’re looking for a few appetizers, a full meal, or just some great brews, Maidens has you covered. Rock on! - Jonathan Gluff For more info, follow Maidens Brewery on Facebook.

KENNA ELPERS YOUNG SINGER, OLD SOUL: NORTH POSEY SOPHOMORE HAS THE X FACTOR, MATURITY FOR COUNTRY MUSIC STARDOM If you're looking for an example of just how tightly the local music community embraces talent, look no further than 15-year-old Kenna Elpers. The North Posey sophomore has truly been feeling the love of late - but not just from her growing legion of fans. In fact, some of the area's most high-profile musicians and bands have been reaching out to help this extraordinarily gifted young country singer navigate the scene. And for good reason. Mature beyond her years - an "old soul" as she describes herself - Elpers possesses the elusive X factor that separates good performers from potential stars, exuding the sort of charm and playfulness that keeps crowds locked-in while she belts it out from the stage. Then again, Elpers is a born entertainer. One of her earliest memories, from around the age of three, clearly speaks to who she's become. "I would sing to anything," she recalls. "Like, I would look at a rock, at a butterfly and sing to it and write songs about them." Her mother Dana happily encouraged these artistic impulses early on, even bringing home a polka-dotted Hannah Montana guitar for Elpers to strum. In no time flat, the overexcited 5-year-old had broken every string. Just a decade later she would be breaking out as a star in the making. Elpers made a crucial decision to that end as her days at North Elementary waned. "I began working with someone local and she brought me into local talent shows at places like Haubstadt Sommerfest, Posey County Fair and Fall Festival Amateur Hour," she says. "I would sing to karaoke tracks." With a number of these one-offs under her belt, Elpers next tackled the song that would "sprout what I'm doing now," learning - and becoming a pro at performing - the National Anthem. Good word of mouth ultimately led to an increasing demand for her vocal skills at numerous high-level, school-related sporting events, including unforgettable gigs at Lucas Oil Stadium and Bankers Life Fieldhouse. But perhaps the biggest break of all came when Elpers' cousin,

Andrea Wirth of the Honey Vines, invited her to play the popular SongHouse series at Lamasco Bar & Grill. "That's where it all started - becoming friends with [booking agent] Chris Passage and [owner] Amy Word-Smith," she says. "The way they work with the community has helped me land shows at other venues." Quite quickly, the teenager's country-flavored sets and assured delivery got her booked at hotspots like Kevin's Backstage Bar & Grill, Carson's Brewery and Roca Bar North, plus appearances at tri-state festivals like the upcoming ParksFest on September 8 at Garvin Park. Even more impressively, Elpers was named WKDQ's 2017 Taste of Hometown Riser and recently wowed judges at Boots at Busch, a battle of the bands held every year at Busch Stadium. While she doesn't actually have a set band at the moment, the likes of Dekar Baker and Theo Akai (On Tap Project), Chris Tapp (The Cold Stares), Larry Deffendoll (Jimmy DeTalente & The Electric Revival) and the NATU Band have all stepped up to lend Elpers a musical hand. That list also includes tri-state musician Joe Greulich who has not only offered invaluable assistance but even earned a co-writing credit on Elpers' debut EP, released a couple of months ago. Produced by Dream Vision Productions out of southern Illinois, the three-song, all-original effort showcases her most obvious influences: Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris and Luke Bryan. But she's also a huge fan of classic country artists like Johnny Cash and especially Dolly Parton whom Elpers idolizes. She may not be quite as fond of school, but sophomore year is here, regardless. The hope is to find a healthy balance between academics and music, to keep the grades up while continuing to write songs and perform when the opportunity presents itself. Rest assured Elpers will find a way to make it work - no matter how long it takes. "In my song "Wildflower," I talk about following your dreams, because they start to come true, eventually." JIMMY DETALENTE & THE ELECTRIC REVIVAL WHERE THEY BEGAN: NEW TRI-STATE MUSICAL PARTNERSHIP ROOTED IN THE CHURCH, HEADED FOR THE CHARTS Evansville's Jimmy DeTalente was born and raised in the church, growing up in a musical atmosphere that encouraged artistic expression. Yet, it wasn't an inspiring hymn or the power of the gospel that truly lit a fire under him as a teenager. No, what really turned DeTalente's young world upside down was a fairly obscure show on the USA Network called Night Flight that broadcast music videos for people not tuned into the early days of MTV, introducing kids across America to bands that were often just a little left of center - like Depeche Mode and Siouxsie & The Banshees. But it also helped to kickstart the hair metal revolution, frequently airing clips of the glam-inspired groups that would ultimately define the mid-to-late 80's. One song in particular stopped DeTalente dead in his tracks: Poison's "Talk Dirty to Me." "It changed my world," he says with complete sincerity while flashing a big smile. "I saw that these guys had girls surrounding them and they had crazy lights..." Determined to follow Poison's lead (minus the eyeliner and lipstick), DeTalente set his sights on a neon green BC Rich Warlock guitar for eighth grade graduation. He settled for red. From there, with the help of various family members and friends, he learned the basics and, most importantly, discovered power chords and distortion. "That was the beginning," DeTalente states emphatically. His high school years were divided up between Evansville Christian, Memorial and Harrison before heading to the University of Evansville in 1993 to study Applied Guitar, encouraged by his progress on the six-string via lessons with Ron Pritchett, a veteran of the local jazz scene. But the education he really desired wasn't taught in the classroom. "I went two semesters and then told my parents that I was going to be a rockstar, that I didn't need college - and for some brilliant reason they supported that," he says, still slightly puzzled by their positive reaction. "They either really believed in me or decided that it was going to save them a lot of money."

Regardless, DeTalente wasted no time forming bands and hitting the road for long stretches, fronting rock-driven outfits like Lost Anthem, Plush, Shine and American Analog - and avoiding covers at all costs. "My big thing was always original music," he explains. "From the time that I first picked up a guitar, I wrote songs." But while this creative focus may have nurtured his artistic soul, it didn't always pay the bills. Thankfully, DeTalente's parents were gracious enough to let him come home and work for the family floor covering business when times were tight - a big help considering that the budding musician had a wife and kids to look after, too. Just like mom and dad, the love of his life has been an invaluable support system, standing behind him through thick and quite a bit of thin. "We've been married for 20 years and she's had to deal with a lot of lonely nights," DeTalente openly admits. Perhaps that's why after chasing the dream for so long - and never quite attaining rockgod status - DeTalente pretty much called it a day when American Analog inevitably fizzled. Turns out it was just a much-needed respite. "I thought I was done, but then someone asked me to sit in with the band at church, and I said, 'sure,'" he recalls. Next, a conversation with Larry Deffendoll, a fellow musician (a beast on the drums, to be exact) who attended the same congregation, sparked a major re-think and set the wheels in motion for a brand new project. "He told me that my songs deserved to be heard and maybe we should put something together, so we went to our friend and guitarist Dave McCord's little home studio one night about 18 months ago and just started from nowhere," DeTalente says. By all accounts, everything gelled; one jam session led to another and they began to consider the million dollar question: what if we did this for real? The answer came in the form of Grammy Award-winning producer

Travis Wyrick, owner of Lakeside Studios in Knoxville, TN. Thanks to a connection with Deffendoll, he agreed to help the guys record the debut EP by the newly-christened Jimmy DeTalente & The Electric Revival - a telling moniker reflecting a rejuvenation of spirit. It was something that Wyrick seized upon in the studio, coaxing honest performances out of the nascent band, particularly DeTalente. "Travis was all about the truth in the vocals - he wanted to believe the words I was singing," he says. Mission accomplished. Across five heartfelt, chart-worthy tracks fusing Americana, country and rock, Where We Begin signaled the birth of a wonderful musical partnership - but one with plenty of room to grow. "We love the recording but we've figured out we're a band now and what we do as a live act is a little bit different than the EP," DeTalente explains, noting that on stage the guys really rip it up and interact with the crowd at key points during the show. And yes, they even play covers (a well-chosen mix of country, Southern rock, etc.) - a simple necessity with sets that can last up to four hours. So far the Revival - including new bassist Mike Mitchell - have hit regional hotspots like Cincinnati and Memphis and scored numerous local gigs at places like Kevin's Backstage Bar & Grill, Lamasco and Piston's. In time, a less-polished recording more in line with the live experience is expected. Oh, and remember Detalente's devoted wife? Well, he recently wrote a very romantic song for her called "For a Few" which has since become a focal point of the Revival's set and even been requested at a wedding or two. DeTalente has also contributed two tracks to an upcoming Lionsgate-produced film with more creative opportunities on the horizon and no plans to slow down. "Long story short, I love what I'm doing or I wouldn't keep doing it - that would be crazy."

Q&A

WITH NAOKO YAMANO OF SHONEN KNIFE ETERNALLY-YOUTHFUL POP-PUNK LEGEND TALKS BAND LONGEVITY, SONGWRITING AND MORE Inspired by the emergence of early punk bands like the Buzzcocks and the Ramones, Naoko Yamano formed Shonen Knife in Osaka, Japan in 1981, paving the way for a rather unlikely career that's now stretched into its fourth decade. The ebullient vocalist/guitarist, together with her sister Atsuko and friend Michie Nakatani, married the raw energy of the punk scene with a sweet lyrical approach, creating adorable yet rocking songs about food and animals - among other joyous topics - sung in a combination of English and their native tongue. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain (R.I.P.) counted himself a huge fan and was not shy about it. Hence, the Knife really hit their stride in the early to mid-90s, riding a wave of love in America on the back of such endlessly fun releases as Let's Knife and Rock Animals. Over the years, the band much like the Ramones before them - has stayed true to its core sound while incorporating elements of everything from 60's pop to hard rock (the latter influence is heard in full effect on 2014's Overdrive and the Knife's most recent album, 2016's Adventure). At the center of it all, Yamano, today a strikingly youthful-looking 57, continues to steer the ship, still as determined as ever to bring smiles to the faces of Knife fans across the world with her irrepressible musical spirit. Despite her limited English, she kindly agreed to a quick Q&A with News 4U ahead of the band's fall tour which reaches Indianapolis on 9/11 and St. Louis on 9/12.

Shonen Knife have outlasted many of the bands that formed in early 80's. What's been the key to your longevity? Thanks to our fans' support and encouragement, they've made me want to continue the band. I would like to continue making more fun, unique songs than before.

You grew up listening to the Buzzcocks and the Ramones, among other groups - which was probably not the norm for a young Japanese woman. What were most of your peers listening to at that time?

Many of my high school friends were listening to American or British rock music, too. Kiss, Queen, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or David Bowie were popular. I loved these bands, too.

Does your songwriting approach change with each release depending on the music you're listening to at the time or is the process simply organic?

Now, I am often listening to funk, R&B, disco, soul music. I like music which I can’t play. My writing approach is inspired by the music I’m listening to. Basically, I listen to various kinds of music. Inspired by them, I write songs through my music filter.

Elton John famously sang, "Sad songs say so much...". Do you ever feel like writing a sad song or are you just too filled with joy?

I think nothing whether sadness or joy. I’m not romantic. I just don’t want to write intrusive lyrics. I’m happy if the listeners interpret by their own feeling.

VOLUMES OF BLOOD

OWENSBORO FILM COMPANY STRIKES KILLER DEAL WITH SCREAM TEAM RELEASING FOR SPECIAL BLU-RAY EDITION

In 2015, News 4U first reported on the incredible story of Volumes of Blood, an indie horror anthology produced by Blood Moon Pictures out of Owensboro and praised by Horror Hound magazine as, "a low-budget love affair to spooky stories and Halloween antics." The unexpected success of the film spawned an even gorier, criticallyacclaimed sequel, 2016's VOB: Horror Stories. Currently, the western KY crew headed by producer P.J. Starks (Close Calls, 10/31, Cyptids) is hard at work on the final installment in the trilogy, VOB: Devil's Knight. But even with all the buzz over the new film, the original anthology that started it all is still garnering interest despite being out of print. All that's about to change, though, now that Blood Moon has partnered with Scream Team Releasing for a fantastic Killectors Edition Blu-ray. With a brand new high res transfer, tons of special features and a reversible insert with new artwork by Zero Dark, it's guaranteed to please even the most jaded horror fan. Starks notes that "presales have done better than expected with copies selling to Canada, the UK, Hungary and Australia." Not bad for a local film shot on a pittance, eh? Just goes to show what can be achieved with a little money and a lot of creativity and passion. On the money tip, all sales for the Killectors Edition Blu-ray will go to help fund the production of Devil's Knight. Or as Starks more directly puts it, "With your support we can finish our anthology franchise strong with more horrifying killers, bloodier special effects and incredible twists. Own the original that started it all and take part in helping finish out this trilogy of terror." Bonus Content Includes: - Making of VOB featurette -Music Video - The Preylude short film -Cast/Crew Commentary -Bloodbath and Beyond Review -Not Just Another Horror Anthology -The Splatter Effect Featurette -Radios spots, interviews and more! MOUNT OLYMPUS UNIVERSITY (WEEKLY) MOU asks a simple question: What would happen if all of the figures of mythology went to/worked at a college? The answer is a wonderful little fiction podcast about Pandora, the only “normal” human enrolled at this mysterious university. When she isn’t losing to Thor at drinking contests or being kept up at all hours by her roommate Aphrodite’s amorous affairs, Pandora finds herself wandering into a long-abandoned student radio station. Soon she’s hosting a talk show and learning to enjoy her life as a freshman surrounded by a host of interesting characters. The ultimate blend of fantasy and college stories. mountolympusuniversity.com

HORSE (WEEKLY) This is everything I’ve wanted from a sports podcast with none of the boring minutiae that sports podcasts usually come packaged with. Co-hosts Eric Silver and Mike Schubert really like basketball and have started this show with the mission to talk about everything in the NBA except the numbers. Shaq’s many (self-assigned) nicknames, some of the wackier bets Michael Jordan has made, and some of the goofiest, lesser team names in the NBA have been discussed so far. Even if one doesn’t like basketball, the sport gets so ridiculous and HORSE is here to talk about it. horsehoops.com

STATION BLUE (BI-WEEKLY) This delightfully eerie isolationist horror podcast is the perfect thing to listen to on a hot day. Station Blue is the story of Matthew, a 20-something burnout who gets the opportunity of a lifetime: an incredibly well-paying gig keeping an Antarctic research station up and running during the harsh winter months. Unfortunately for Matthew, there’s something… else going on at Station Blue. The show is still in its first season so now’s the time to jump in and join the (terrifying) fun! stationbluepodcast.com

PATWA'S PERSPECTIVE

with Marisa Patwa

Fall TV picks It’s fall television time and I’ve got your inside sneak peak at the hottest new shows premiering in September. The Purge: Based on the horror movie franchise of the same name, USA’s The Purge premieres at 10 p.m. on 9/4. The synopsis: In order to help lower the crime rate, all crimes are legal for 12 hours for one day, leading to chaos and the inevitable stalking and torture. I’m personally freaked out by the idea of watching mass murderers in creepy doll masks running around the dark streets at night with chainsaws, waiting to sever an unsuspecting limb here or there. It’s also hard to capture the same magic of a movie franchise in a TV show, but here’s hoping The Purge is able to sustain its plot over the length of a series. The Good Cop: For comedy fans, Netflix premieres The Good Cop on 9/21. The synopsis: singer-actor Josh Groban is a NYPD detective who lives with his dad, a former cop, played by the comedically brilliant Tony Danza. This is more of an “odd couple” vibe, with the father-son relationship at the center of the show’s premise. It’s like a more metropolitan version of Ashton Kutcher’s The Ranch. Just with Groban as the eye-candy. Single Parents: Another great comedy I’m super excited for, ABC's Single Parents premieres at 8 p.m. on 9/26. The synopsis: The show centers around the trials of several single parents in the PTA and features an all-star cast including Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Taran Killam (SNL) and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond). As a new mom, any television content illustrating the humor of trying to raise children is entertainment to me. And although I'm engaged, I still think any parent - no matter what their relationship status - will be able to connect with and enjoy this stellar new show.

SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY

Each month we’ll be checking in with the VHS for the latest good news and to help find furever homes for some of their more unique/older residents.

CLOUDY : Cloudy is a 6-year-old female dilute tortoiseshell cat. She’s friendly with other cats and should do fine in just about any home! There were several other cats living in the same house as her, all surrendered together, and she’s one of the last ones left. Her adoption fee is $40 and includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more.

MIA: Mia is a 1-year-old female American Staffordshire (“pit bull”) mix! She is the mom to the “Spice Girls” puppies, who have all been adopted. She can be a little fearful of new things, but is a very affectionate and social dog after just a little bit of lovins and treats. She would do fine in just about any home! Mia’s adoption fee is $110 and includes her microchip, vaccines, and spay – no more puppies for her!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT - GAMBIT -

Nikki Shamell already had her hands full with three young children and a 2-year-old Golden Retriever mix in the house on the southeast side of Evansville, but even so, when she heard that area animal shelters were filled to capacity last April, there was only one thing to do: ask her husband if he'd be cool with another dog. Not surprisingly, he wasn't thrilled with the idea. "I said, 'well, just let me go look' - and of course, I found one," Shamell laughs. What she found was a very timid "standard mix" that, unlike all the other dogs at the VHS on that day, stayed at the back of his cage and did not bark or whine for attention. Shamell was struck by how lonely the little fellow seemed and decided to give him a shot. "You can definitely tell that he's had some abuse issues in the past - he's very fearful of men. It's been a long process to try and overcome that." But gradually, Gambit and Shamell's husband have been making headway, and the family's Golden Retriever is helping the new addition come out of his shell. Best of all, Shamell reports that Gambit is particularly good with her kids. "He's very, very affectionate with them and likes to cuddle, so they've been great together." Oh, and Gambit has taken to sleeping with his head on a pillow just like us humans do - hilarious. Another successful adoption!

BETTY: Betty is a 2-year-old female American Fuzzy Lop rabbit. She is very sweet and loves people & other animals! She’s done very well with handling since being at the shelter and has even met several groups of schoolchildren. Her adoption fee is $40, and she’s already spayed & ready to go home today!

NEWS4U SEPTEMBER 2018 | OPINION

ASK THE PASTOR

THE WRITE STUFF

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

WHICH RELIGIOUS TRADITION IS THE "REAL ONE"?

Mark Twain famously said, “Man is the only animal that has the true religion – several of them!” There was a time when everyone assumed that you were a Christian or a Jew or no religious preference. This, of course, was a gross over simplification. Many religious traditions have been present in our country since its founding. Much is often made of the “Judeo-Christian” tradition being the tradition on which our laws are based. But as time moved forward, and as people from other parts of the world immigrated to the U.S., other religious traditions came with them: Islam, Hinduism, Daoism, Buddhism, and many more. Suddenly, the world of the “Judeo-Christian tradition” seemed to be slipping away. What I have discovered over years of conversation and cooperation is that these various traditions hold far more in common than we may be aware. We are all searching for the answer to who we are, what we have been created to do, how we relate to each other, and how we can work together to make the world a better place. I have been blessed to build friendships and partnerships with people of many different faiths. Through these marvelous people outside of my own tradition, I have gained new understanding of my own faith tradition as well as new respect for their faith tradition. Maybe Twain was right after all. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

with Jonathan Gluff As the Days Go By (Or “Time Is Not On My Side”) When we were kids (and we all were at one time, no matter how hard it may be to remember for some of us), time went by so slowly. My wife’s nephew’s 10th birthday was just yesterday, and he mentioned how he’d “been waiting all year” for it. (I laughed and told him he was literally correct.) I told him how I remembered how excited I was for my 10th birthday, and how even though it seemed like an eternity waiting for it then, my last several birthdays have felt like they’ve flown by. My brother and I were talking just this morning about how quickly the twoyear anniversary of his new job came around. The juxtaposition of seeing the perceived passage of time two days in a row by two people 20 years apart made me stop and take notice. When I was 10, years really did seem like they dragged on. I never believed my elder family members when they said the years moved quicker as you got older, and I’m awestruck by just how right they were. The seemingly increasingly rapid passage of time gives almost anyone pause when they stop to think about it. It forces one to contemplate their own mortality and the impending threat of letting life pass by, as the old trope

SEPTEMBER 2018 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

goes. Life is too short for regrets and grudges. With this and my general desire to better myself in mind, I finally took it upon myself to reconcile with a family member I’ve had many grievances with in the past. I realized that although they’re far from blameless for our numerous arguments and altercations, they’re also not the only one to blame; I and others involved bear some of the burden as well. I don’t excuse their wrongdoings, either - I simply understand now with experience and age why they acted the way they did. Forgiveness doesn’t have to mean forgetting or complete absolution; for this case, it simply means recognizing each others’ shortcomings and why we acted the way we did. But more importantly, it means we can try to start over and not dwell on the past anymore. Doing so has never done anyone any good, and I’m not interested in things that drag me down. I want my personal progress to match that accelerated passage of time, and doing this was a very important step in achieving that goal.

NEWS4U SEPTEMBER 2018 | POLITICS

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

A Q&A WITH WILLIAM TANOOS,

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR INDIANA'S 8TH DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL SEAT What is the primary difference between yourself and Congressman Bucshon?

Policy wise, we have many differences. They are all out there, but I would say the biggest policy difference has been our stance on the legalization of marijuana. I support the legalization of marijuana because it would decrease the opioid epidemic, would be a boost to the economy of Hoosier farmers. Taxing and regulating it is the safe and fiscally responsible thing to do; it would alleviate the burdens of the criminal justice system; it will help a veteran; and it would help those with serious medical problems. The current congressman has come out against it. But maybe the major difference is that I plan to live in this district if I am fortunate enough to serve. My wife and I both grew up in Terre Haute, both went to the public schools here, and want our children to do the same. Also, I think a U.S. Representative is the closest resource that people have to the federal government. I think it's important to shop at the same grocery stores, belong to the same community organizations, and live in the same place as the people you are representing.

Your campaign website says you support tax cuts for small businesses. Do you support the tax cuts recently passed by Congress? I think they were flip-flopped to favor the wrong group. The wealthiest 1% received the lion's share of the tax cut, but I believe

that the middle class and working men and women should have received more of the cuts. A reduction in the tax and regulatory burden for small businesses would help those that invest in the community, the backbone of our district. I also think that the $1 trillion deficit that this tax cut caused is fiscally irresponsible and will be a major threat to our children, and I am strongly opposed to the current House plan that would cut Social Security and Medicare to pay for it. I believe in fiscal responsibility, not cutting taxes for the wealthiest at the expense of our economy and on the backs of working men and women.

What impact (if any) do you feel President Trump's tariffs will have on 8th District residents?

Some of the biggest exports of the U.S. are soybeans, aluminum, corn, and coal. Those are also some of the biggest and most vital industries of the 8th District. 97% of Hoosier farms are family-owned, and they are already hurting because of this. I met with a steel company in the district who may go out of business because the price of raw materials has skyrocketed. Even major corporations like Toyota who invests in the community, employs 5,500 people, and does so much good for our area may be negatively affected by these tariffs. I understand the intent, but the means don't justify the ends. Instead of tariffs, I think we need to renegotiate our trade deals, particularly NAFTA, so they benefit working men and women instead of

allowing big corporations to outsource their jobs.

Do you think President Trump’s tweets help or hurt his relationship with Congress?

I honestly don't see his tweets, unless they are in the news. I'm running for Congress to serve the people of the 8th District, plain and simple. If the President acts to invest in infrastructure and protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare like he promised on the campaign trail, then I will be eager to work with him. The people of this district are tired of petty partisan politics and just want someone to get things done. That means working together no matter whose idea it is and making sure we work to help all citizens.

If elected and the Democrats take control of Congress, would you vote for Nancy Pelosi to be the next House Speaker? Absolutely not. In fact, if I were in Congress in 2016, I would have voted for Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) who ran against Pelosi, and if he chooses to run again, I will vote for him. That's because he represents a district very similar to our 8th District and has a message of economic strength for the middle class and working men and women, the same folks we live and work with here and are trying to help. NEWS4U SEPTEMBER 2018 | FILM REVIEWS

EXTINCTION UNIVERSAL PICTURES

In this alien invasion movie with a twist, Michael Pena plays a lowly hardware engineer at an undefined but very futuristic industrial plant. Unappreciated at work and distant at home, he feels unconnected to the world around him. The cause of all his trouble comes in dreams, short premonitions of lights in the sky and explosions in the street. As the movie title would suggest, his visions come true, and what ensues could mean the beginning of the end for the world as he knows it. Michael Pena may be the perfect actor for this role and future roles like it. He embodies the everyday malaise of the tedious and unfulfilled life as well as Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and pulls from its humility a type of courage that makes cinema a perfect vehicle for empathy. As the plot unfurls through a series of unexpected twists, it becomes clear that this film isn't concerned only with pushing its characters to their brink, but pushing its viewers as well. For all the action that occurs in Extinction (and there is a good amount!), the most spectacular aspects of this movie are the ways in which it complicates a series of expectations that are established from the outset. It puts the onus on its viewers to see just where their allegiances lay, and to what degree they are willing to bend. - John Thurgood

HOW IT ENDS

PAUL SCHIFF PRODUCTIONS How It Ends is a disaster movie with no clear cause and, unlike its title suggests, no clear resolution. A series of apocalyptic disasters turn the West Coast into a geological nightmare. Unfortunately for Will (Theo James), his fiancĂŠ is trapped in Seattle, and he teams up with his father-in-law-to-be (played by Forest Whitaker) to drive across the country from Chicago to save her. They run into trouble, both natural and manmade, but unlike similar storylines like The Road, the procession of trials they meet along the way seem loosely connected, adding more confusion to the mysterious cause of all this destruction. As with The Road (or at least the movie adaptation) where the external extremes are a representation of the internal turmoil of the protagonist, the external extremes presented in How It Ends seem unconnected to its characters and instead unfurl like a Rube Goldberg machine, one disaster creating another in a mindless chain of events with the only cause being the flip of the switch that starts the movie. Or in this case, the click of a mouse (as Netflix would have it). Forest Whitaker is the saving grace of this movie, but even he can't wrestle free from all its dead weight. How It Ends may represent an all time low in the long downward spiral Netflix has been taking with its independent film distribution rights, but only time will tell. - John Thurgood

CHILDISH GAMBINO Summer Pack EP RCA I wasn’t expecting anything new from retired-but-not-really Childish Gambino, yet hot on the heels of the fantastic "This is America" single we get a two-song EP and it’s summer themed. Why? I dunno, but it achieves more in two songs than some albums do in 12. Some of this is due to the poorly-kept secret that the song "Feels Like Summer" is the lead single from Gambino’s upcoming fourth album, and it definitely feels like a lead single. Even better, it lives up to the title. Both songs on this EP feel custom-made to be played over a Blutooth speaker somewhere near a pool at 7 p.m. on a humid summer night, one forgotten pool float drifting by while friends eat and complain about the oppressive heat. They sound just as good in earphones with 100% of the listener’s attention as they do drifting into the steamy night air. For all the high air conditioning bills and god-awful heat Evansville has experienced this summer, Childish Gambino makes me nostalgic for a storybook summer afternoon. I’m even somewhat sad the season will pass by without my having gone swimming once. Get this EP, go outside, and enjoy. - Gavin Gaddis

DIRTY PROJECTORS Lamp Lit Prose Domino Recording Co.

THE PINK SPIDERS Mutations Stereo Productions After 10 long years, The Pink Spiders are back thanks to a Kickstarter project created by frontman Matt Friction. Reminiscent of early 2000's pop punk, Mutations stays true to the sound that earned them fans over a decade ago. The almost whiny voice of Friction is enough to make you forget about the extended hiatus, as the band sounds just as youthful as they did when they released their first EP, 2004's The Pink Spiders Are Taking Over!. Even the employment of a brass breakdown on the song “Penny Ante Avenue” brings back memories of the greater Age of Ska. While the Spiders are true to their sound, that comes with a few letdowns. After a 10 year hiatus, it's important to appeal to your old fan base, while also expanding. If you need a nice early-2000s bop, there are a couple dozen Spotify playlists for you; there is no real need for another dramatic album that reminds you of middle school. It's important for a band to stay true to themselves, but staying true does not mean staying stagnant. Even so, the lightweight guitar chugging and nasally vocals of Mutations are perfect for your road trip playlist. The catchy choruses will undoubtedly make their way into this summer’s karaoke bars and dorm rooms alike. - Kendall Shanks

THE INTERNET Hive Mind Columbia Records Group

If you like to lean into the experimental side of experimental rock, I have the album for you. Having never encountered Dirty Projectors prior to giving Lamp Lit Prose a shot, the best comparison I can muster is to take the kooky instrument choice and non sequitur wordplay of They Might Be Giants and throw it in a blender with a more commercially-appealing, poppy vocal sound one might hear in a Fall Out Boy. You’ll find yourself in the kind of musical neighborhood where an accordion or tuba would not entirely seem out of place, yet there will also be plenty of tasty electric guitar riffs.

The creation of Odd Future’s Syd Tha Kid and Matt Martians, The Internet is arguably the only well-known neosoul or modern-funk band around. Imagine if 90's R&B and Woodstock were somehow mashed together - that is The Internet. Hive Mind peaked on the US R&B charts at number two, the band's highest placing to date, and for good reason. In the age of Soundcloud rappers and mumble rap, the industry needed this refreshing album that appeals to fans of nearly every genre. With 13 tracks, there is everything from Soul Train-esque melodies and new-age electronica to R&B songs reminiscent of 1990's ballads.

Bands like Dirty Projectors rub up against the unfortunate reality that a lot of existing genre labels mean basically nothing at this point. The fact that the word rock is anywhere near the description of this album further contributes to the fact that the word rock just means “not pop enough to qualify as pop but too much guitar to be something else” in some people’s eyes. The experimental nature of Dirty Projectors lends itself to an ever-changing listening experience. There are some recurring themes of R&B in the songs but they predominantly stand apart. - Gavin Gaddis

The album title comes from a statement made by Martians when asked about this iteration of The Internet, saying in part that while things may change in the future, the members currently “have a hive mind.” While Odd Future was unconventional and people doubted that Syd would stray from that, she did and has found her niche in the ever-changing music industry. This album is perfect for summer parties, family cookouts, and for just dancing through the house like no one is watching. Kendall Shanks

NEWS4U SEPTEMBER 2018 | BEER REVIEWS

SEPTEMBER BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. GOOSE ISLAND OKTOBER FEST

JONATHAN GLUFF - 4.5

Goose Island is a company that rarely lets me down. From the time I first tried a Honker’s Ale in 2005 and even through their purchase by the big guys in 2011, they’ve been consistent in quality, and luckily enough, their Oktoberfest offering keeps up that sterling track record. With a rich nuttiness on both the nose and the palate, it’s everything an Oktoberfest should be without resorting to essentially becoming “pumpkin spice beer” like so many others. With a smooth finish like a perfect autumn day, you’ll wish this was available year-round.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thin white head forms and quickly disappears from this beer after pouring it into a traditional beer mug. Sweet malt scents dominate the nose. The malt flavors remain during the first sip of the beer, with slight hop bitterness coming through in the finish. This perennial seasonal favorite definitely deserves some space in your refrigerator between now and October. Pair it with your favorite German dishes like sausages, sauerkraut, pretzels or hamburgers.

This is a clear brownish beer. I can taste the bready caramel flavors right away. Since this is the season of the Oktoberfest I feel this one is just a little better than average. With newer microbreweries coming out and competing in this market, Goose Island does ok with this one but nothing to go crazy about.

ELYSIAN NIGHT OWL

METAZOA KITTEN SLUMBER PARTY

Remember how I said some Oktoberfests devolve into “pumpkin spice beer”? Case in point: Elysian Night Owl. If pumpkin spice lattes and an Oktoberfest had a love child, this would be it. However, despite the fact that I truly do not enjoy it, that’s not to say it’s bad (nor am I insulting Elysian, who makes many brews I do enjoy). By all means, it’s crafted well: It’s smooth and exactly as advertised. But don’t expect subtlety - it may not be immediately noticeable by smell, but this is a pumpkin bomb in a bottle. A decent white head forms on this beer. A generous amount of pumpkin fills the nose in a manner reminiscent of liquid pumpkin pie. The first sip gives off a good amount of sweetness and takes some time for the pumpkin and spice flavors to return in the long finish. In a world where pumpkin beers flood the market every fall, this one seems different. Pair it with a slice of pumpkin pie and whipped cream.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a cloudy, slightly darker, ambercolored beer. I can taste the all spice right away. I consider this one of the best pumpkin beers I have had. Some hammer the all spice while others are pretty weak. This beer has a good blend, making it very smooth and easy to drink. I can also taste a little clove and slight pumpkin flavor. I find that many of the pumpkin beers make you feel like you're drinking a dessert; this one is the exception.

This chocolate milk stout is one of the latest offerings from the rising stars at Metazoa Brewing Co. in Indianapolis. And that descriptor isn’t kidding - the chocolate is strong with this one. That’s not necessarily a bad thing - dark chocolate and dark beers go very well together, and if you’ve never tried a dark beer, a beer with chocolate undertones, or either, you can certainly do a lot worse for your first one. Not too strong and not too sweet, it’s worth trying right meow. A thick tan head crowns this stout after pouring it into an English pub glass and never totally evaporates. A good complement of sweetness and roasted malt control the scent profile. The sweetness stays during the first tasting without becoming overpowering, while the roasted notes come through prominently in the finish. People who enjoy stouts need to try this. Pair it with hearty dishes like a thick beef stew or serve it with your favorite chocolate dessert.

Ok, the name and the can made me snicker. This is a dark beer that is comparable to a Guinness. It has the rich chocolate flavors and sweetness that you find in chocolate milk stouts. It also has the silky texture when you drink it. I also notice that it's brewed in Indy so it has a lot of positive things going for it as far as I'm concerned.

SAMUEL SMITH PURE BREWED ORGANIC LAGER

JONATHAN GLUFF - 3.5

The word “lager” may seem a dirty word to some, notably due to low-quality mass-produced beers that have sullied

its good name. But Samuel Smith’s Pure Brewed Organic Lager is not one of those. Bearing more in common with traditional lagers, it’s much more flavorful than “American lagers.” By no means is it hoppy or bitter, instead letting the barley and yeast impart a rich, crisp flavor. If you like the flavor of Big Beer™ but want something that’s made with quality and not just quantity in mind, give this beer a try.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head crowns this beer after pouring it into a pilsner glass and stays for some time. The scent contains

the balance of malt and hops people instantly recognize in a lager. The first tasting of the beer has a nice mix of malt and hops, as well as a good amount of carbonation. Craft beer novices should enjoy this. Serve it with a wide variety of lighter dishes to enhance a meal.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a clear yellow beer. I haven’t had too many pure organic beers but this one is just ok. It has a slight Heineken flavor to it. It also has an earthy flavor to it that I really don't care for. I do like the larger cans, but the flavors have that slight skunk beer flavor in my opinion.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
