From the Editor's Desk: 133th Birth Anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Jayanti 2024: Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956 C.E.) popularly known as Babasaheb, was an Indian lawyer, politician and academic. As independent India's first law minister, he was the principal architect of the Constitution of India. He was born on April 14, 1891 into a poor Mahar family. Bhimrao Ambedkar belonged to a lower caste community. He converted into Buddhism and inspired many other lower caste people to turn into Buddhism. He brought the reservation law in India for the lower caste communities. He died in his sleep on December 6, 1956 at his home in Delhi. Ambedkar was the first untouchable of India to pursue a college degree. He earned a law degree and doctorates for his studies in law, economics and political science, gaining a reputation as a scholar and campaigning for political rights and social freedom for the lowest in the caste system, untouchables. In 1927, Dr Ambedkar organised and led a march at Mahad, Maharashtra that eventually helped established equal rights for untouchable people who were not allowed to touch or taste the water of Chawdar Lake.

Summer Beverage Health Risks

The onset of the summer season brings about a surge in the sale of unhygienic and substandard cool drinks, fruit juices, and ice creams in most of the cities, posing significant health risks. Wayside vendors, eager to capitalize on the scorching sun, have encroached upon public spaces across busy areas, disregarding hygiene standards. These vendors, operating without proper oversight, often sell juices made from rotten fruits and serve cool drinks in reused glasses without adequate cleaning.

Food safety officers, has to initiate operations to address this issue by shutting down unauthorized juice shops which has found to be operating in unhygienic conditions. They should warn vendors against selling artificially colored fruits like watermelons, mangoes etc., and emphasize the necessity of obtaining licenses for operating such shops.

Most public health activists, underscores the health risks associated with consuming beverages prepared in unhygienic conditions, especially for children who are more susceptible to seasonal diseases during summer. Overall, it's evident that unregulated vendors selling unhygienic beverages pose a significant health hazard to the public, and concerted efforts from both authorities and consumers are essential to address this issue effectively.

Ban Packaging of Hot Food in Plastic Bags

Despite the ban on plastic bags and compostable plastic bags for carrying or dispensing commodities across the country, they are still extensively used, especially for packaging food in hotels. Items like tea, coffee, milk, sambar, rasam, and hot curry are commonly packed in plastic bags within hotels.Many doctors cites a worry that there is a increase in the number of people suffering from kidney and throat ailments, cancer, and infertility in the city due to the consumption of hot food items carried in low-quality plastic bags or boxes.

When hot food or liquid is packed in a plastic bag, toxic chemicals like styrene and bisphenol can leach into the food, potentially leading to cancer, heart diseases, and other reproductive problems. Therefore, the Department of Food Safety must enforce a ban on packing hot edible items, including beverages, in plastic bags and harmful containers, particularly in cities. Hoteliers and owners of tea and coffee shops should be instructed not to use plastic bags or containers for packing hot edible items. Additionally, traders should prominently display announcements in their business establishments, urging customers to bring their own vessels for purchasing any edible items.

The boost to women’s cricket in India arrived in last year with the WPL auction, which saw winning bids surpassing other women’s leagues and Indian leagues across sports. Before this year season, the focus was on delivering cricket of quality to engage audiences, which proved successful. This year final, where RCB secured their inaugural title, attracted over fifty thousand fans in Delhi, a remarkable turnout. WPL is believed to have achieved record viewership for any women’s event globally.

This success holds significant implications for Indian cricket, akin to the transformative impact of the IPL. Just as IPL propelled India into a cricket powerhouse, WPL is poised to do the same for women's cricket, creating opportunities and enhancing the sport's infrastructure and global presence. Anticipation for the future is palpable.

Paradesi Synagogue

The Jewish Synagogue in the port city of Kochi is the oldest synagogue in all the Commonwealth of Nations. Malabar Yehudan People, or Cochin Jewish community, constructed this synagogue in 1568. It is also known by the name of Paradesi Synagogue and Mattancherry Synagogue. Paradesi is Hindi meaning “foreigners”. In this case, the term was applied to a synagogue because it was once used by the “White Jews”, a mixture of Jews from Cranganore, from the Middle East as well as the European exiles.

The Jewish Synagogue is located in what is today known as the Jew Town in the Kochi city of Kerala. It is the only one of the seven synagogues in the area that is still in use. The synagogue was built on a land gifted to the Malabari Yehuden community by Raja Varma, the then, Raja of Kochi and shares a common wall with the famous Mattancherry Palace temple. Holi is not only a religious but a cultural festival; this festival is a unique opportunity to share happiness, love and positivity. The biggest quality of our culture is that all the festivals celebrated here enhance the love, unity and goodwill among the people by establishing human qualities in the society. The spirit behind all the festivals celebrated here is to provide prosperity to human dignity. Holi has a special message that just as nature is full of colours, life should also be full of colours. The colours of life should be such that deep reverence in God along with oneself. Holi is a perfect festival in terms of purity associated with any festival. It is a unique festival which not only associates the body, but also the soul. Holi is a festival of happiness. The happiness in us is also the colour of our soul.

In fact, Holi is the festival of fun and laughter. The most famous story about this festival is also in relation to Prahlada and Holika. Naradapurana states that Prahlada, the son of a demon named Hiranyakashipu, was an exclusive Hari-bhakta, while Hiranyakashipu considered Narayana to be his ultimate enemy. There was also a severe punishment system for chanting the name of Narayana or Srihari in his kingdom. Seeing his son as a Hari-bhakta, he warned many times, but a supreme devotee like Prahlada was always absorbed in piety. His father tried to kill him several times by taking various measures. But, he survived every time by the grace of Narayana. Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, had the boon of not burning in the fire. So she entered the fire with her nephew Prahlad in her lap. But by the grace of God, Prahlada came out alive and Holika was burned. The festival of Holi signifies 'Victory of Truth over untruth and 'Victory of Virtue over Misconduct'. In this way, the festival of Holi also symbolizes the victory of truth, justice, devotion and faith and the destruction of injustice, sin and demonic practices.

Holi is a festival that breaks all our limits and unites us. That is why we colour each other and say, May your life also be full of colours. Apart from the euphoria of colours, there are many other mythological stories to celebrate the festival of Holi. In North East India, Holika dahan is celebrated as the slaughter day of demonic Putna by Lord Krishna, is celebrated as Putna Daah, then in South India it is believed that on this day Lord Shiva consumed the third eye shell of Kamadeva and he danced the ashes on his body. Thereafter, Lord Shiva revived Kamdev, being moved by the grief of Kamadeva's wife Rati, which pleased the gods and showered them with colours. For this reason, on the eve of Holi, fire is ignited in South India and sugarcane, mango blossom and sandalwood are added to it. Here, sugarcane symbolizes the bow of Cupid, mango blossom of Cupid, the burning of Cupid by the burning fire Shiva and the chanting of sandalwood to calm Kamdev for burning with fire.

Many cultural and public related programs are held to celebrate Holi. The events of Holi in metropolitan culture have given Holi a new zeal and enthusiasm. In these events, there are cultural programs to play songs in a very polite manner. Ghoomar which is a Rajasthani event associated with Holi, people get excited about it. Delicious food items with sandalwood tilak and refresher drinks give this festival a dignified image. In late night ghoomar, dandiya dance and singing troupes from different regions enhance their fun and joy as the night progresses through their performances. Today, due to the deformity of the Pollutions and anti environment, the entire environment has become polluted and fearful; all the colours of life have fallen.

There was no mutual trust, no mutual love, nor a sublime feeling of cooperation, nor did the tone of unity arise in the struggle. No one held hands in the crowd of scattering, nor did anyone release the request. Like this, the divided mind is standing alone in the hope of finding everything again. How false is this wait, how much meaning is this reception. Let us also bring together the countless possibilities of the future and create a conscious atmosphere again. Make a pledge to fill the colour of truth in it. Holi requires an atmosphere and a mind too; a mind where we are all one and uproot the filthy layers of the mind so that all the faces reflected in the mirror of the undivided mind can be felt by us.

In Mathura and Vrindavan, the grand hues of Holi are seen. With the arrival of Basantotsav, the atmosphere of Vrindavan is included in a wonderful fun, the festival of spring is also celebrated with great pomp here. The joy of this festival does not slow down even when it starts, the cool month of Falgun. The traditions of Phalgun month and Holi are related to the pastimes of Shri Krishna and have special significance in the devotee's heart. Celebrating the colorful and joyous festival of Holi with a full devotion of Shri Krishna is a unique experience. Falgun Shukla Ekadashi has special significance in the city of temples Vrindavan. On this day, playing the colours of Holi starts in the traditional form. Both the fun and devotion of Holi in temples spreads its unique beauty.

In order to paint themselves in the colour of this divine month and Holi, devotees come to Vrindavan from far off places and celebrate Holi with full enthusiasm. The environment of Vrindavanis filled with Shri Krishna vibes and the fun of Holi prevails in that too. The special heart-touching dance of the group of devotees is very attractive as soon as it is made in the holy land of Vrindavan. There is no kind of worry, no malice and no madams, only a pleasant atmosphere prevails. To organize Holi in its entirety, we need not only the mind, but also the atmosphere and this is seen in Vrindavan.

The word Holi means purity in the English language. Purity is useful to every person and if the heritage of purity is associated with this festival, then the importance of this festival becomes hundred percent. The question is, how permanent is this happiness, which becomes a passion in the days of Holi? The melodic sound of dhapli (drums) and the Dandiya Raas chimes limited the usefulness of a festival like Holi to what can only be called instantaneous happiness, while expecting this tradition of colours to provide long-term. Such a bond of affection and respect, of love, of friendship and harmony should be tied on which a person can be inspired to do something new. Celebration is the nature of consciousness and the celebration that emanates from silence is real. Holi is a celebration of consciousness. The more one feels joyful by him, the more colours are filled with colours in his life.

In a festival like Holi, all kinds of distractions are erased, then it should be felt that in the fire of Holi, all our sufferings, sorrows, worries, animosity etc. should be ignited and the colour of happiness, cheerfulness and joy in life should be scattered. We should have made some resolution and it can be resolved that we ourselves live a peaceful life and wish for a peaceful life for all. Such a resolution and such a life can really make Holi meaningful.

Kavyapradeshatil Stree is an important review book in Marathi literature today. This book is being discussed everywhere. There is no doubt that this epic written by Kiran shivhar Dongardive proves its uniqueness and importance in the field of Marathi criticism. Through a total of 76 articles, we are introduced to female symbols, images and personalities in the poems of 75 poets who are considered important in Maharashtra. Without considering any particular class, period or stream, the author can be seen to have done his work by studying the anthology right from Janabai to new generation of poets. Dongardive having worked hard to find a female consciousness in all the poems, what do the selected poets in this collection think about women in their poems, what were the perceptions of women in and around their era? etc. are clearly visible to the readers. This work done by Kiran Dongardive is being noticed from all literary regions of Maharashtra. Writing about women means automatically commenting on the roles of women as mother in the society.

Mother is an important roll of woman in social life. Not only in Marathi, but in all languages of the world, the sweetness of motherhood has been sung through poetry. Kiran Dongardive in his review of Kavyapradeshatil Stree

While studying women's feelings, it is seen that he has thought independently about the perspective of the poets of Maharashtra towards motherhood. While exploring motherhood in Sant Janabai's Abhang and Ovi Kavya, it is seen that Janabai has conveyed the importance of motherhood in various Abhangs such as 'pakshi Jai Digantara Balakachi ani Chara' from Abhang "Vithu Maja Lekurwala Sange Lekurancha Mela". The author has also highlighted the maternal estrangement that Janabai experienced as a child, seeing Vitthal and Dnyaneshwar as motherly figures and addressing them. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule in his poetry has highlighted the importance of maternal service by saying that a child born to a woman should not be called a gentleman if he does not serve the mother. Narayan Vaman Tilak has considered mother as Guru in his poem, while searching for the woman in Keshavsuta's poem, the author says that although the mother is far away from the child, her full attention is on the child, Lakshmibai Tilak says in her poem how much respect Rama gives to women because of a woman like Kaikai. We find an example of him forgetting that he had to go to the forest and telling her that he gives her the status of a mother.

Poets like Madhav Julian along with poets like Kavi Bee, Bha Ra Tambe, Bahinabai Choudhary, Vinda Savarkar, Govindagraj, Balakvi, Vasudev Govind Maydev, Pra K Atre etc. show the true description of the glory of motherhood in the woman of Kavya region. Even in that, the readers are touched while reading the maternal image of a woman who is the head of a woman in the poetry of Sane Guruji, Madhav Julian's loving mother. Even though the mother in Grace's poem seems unintelligible, it is seen that the author has done the job of deciphering her very easily. Kiran Dongardive has analyzed the image of mother in the poems of Vamandada Kardak, Annabhau Sathe, Yashwant Manohar, Loknath Yashwant while capturing the maternal impulses in Dalit literature. While studying 75 poets, in fact, the invention of motherhood is inevitable from the female consciousness of all poets' poetry. Needless to say, while studying the female form in the poems of poets such as Shanta Shelke, Indira Sant, Savitribai Phule, Lakshmibai Tilak, Padma Gole to Janabai, the maternal features have become fascinating.

The author's study becomes important as a critic of the events of the production process. The author insists that Hirakani was a conceptual poem by Vinayak, poet Vinayak died before its completion and his nephew Ra na Karandikar completed it and never laid claim to it. Similarly, the myth that Rajkavi Yashwant wrote at the age of ten when his mother was on death's door is false. After studying this, poets have given their opinion. For that he was helped by Shirish Pendharkar and other members of the family of royal poets.

While writing on a poet, not only his books, but searching and communicating with the poet's family members, getting the required information from them, thinking about it from a psychological point of view and expressing his opinion, such a deep review is lacking nowadays. However, a review of Kiran Dongardive's articles in Kavyapradesh Stree makes it certain that critics of new consciousness are emerging who write scholarly reviews and sow positivity.

It is said that this poem Phulta Kavi Phule was written by poet Anil after the poetry concert was over late at night because Kusumavati Deshpande did not open the door and it is said that Kusumavati Deshpande was dead at home when he came up with this poem. After dispelling this myth, it has been said that it is completely false. There is no doubt that the name of Kiran Dongardive will be recorded among the critics who go to this level and think deeply about the literature. There is no doubt that the book Stree in Kavya region is going to be a milestone in the review hall. Yuvraj Mali of Atharva Prakashan has taken as much effort as the author has done to reveal the inner aspects of this book. An equally attractive and apt cover by Arvind Shelar also graces the collection. It can definitely be said that Marathi literature has got a scholar in the field of criticism in the form of Kiran Dongardive. Best wishes to the author for his future endeavors.

Today I will be taking you all to Daiteswara temple, Swarna Jaleshwara temple and Kotitheertheshwar temple in Bhubaneswar.

Daiteswar temple is a single shrine of Rekha deula built with sandstone . The temple faces east and the door-jamb has carved designs. The Outer walls of the temple are found plain and without moulding or designs. From the architechtural features it is believed that this temple was built in between 10th - 11th century AD. The temple was in a collapsing stage and recently structural conservation and part renovation work was done.

Daiteswara, Swarna Jaleshwara and Kotitheertheshwar temple

It is believed that Swarna Jaleshwara temple was built in the first half of 7th century CE and is older than the famous Parasurameswara temple. It was built by the Shailodbhavas. The temple was in complete dilapidated state and restored by the Archaeology Survey of India.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the west-facing Kotitheertheshwar temple was built by the Somavansi dynasty in a Kalinga pacharatha style in the 11th century A.D. The main temple and subsidary shrines are quite plain without any ornamentation of note. It is believed that bathing in the adjacent Kotiteertha Tank, which is fed by a natural spring, and then worshiping the linga in the sanctum is equal to 10,000,000 pilgrimages.This is considered quite an important temple in the city. During the annual Damanaka Chaturdashi festival (March/Apil) the Chandrasekhara idol visits this temple for worship from Lingaraja Temple.

Introduction:

Masani Amman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Sakthi located in Anaimalai Town in Pollachi Taluk in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu, India. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. This Temple is a highly revered shrine among the Tamils. It is situated at the confluence of Aliyar River and the Uppar stream, nestled amid grasslands against the backdrop of mighty Anaimalai Hills.

Puranic Significance:

This Temple is facing towards north with five tiered Rajagopuram. The Temple is enclosed within compound walls and has entrances on all four directions. The sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Masani Amman. Normally, goddesses in the sanctum can be seen either in standing posture or in sitting posture but here she can be seen in lying posture facing the sky which is a unique feature. The deity measures 17 feet from head to foot. She is depicted with four hands; two hands are placed on the ground and the other two hands are raised above. While the top left hands hold a skull and snake and other two hands holding drum and a trident. A demon named Makudasuran can be seen at her feet. Nadukal can be seen in front of her. There is a Neethi Kal (Stone of Justice) in the temple premises. The prayer of applying the chili paste on this stone is quite famous. Shrines of Ganesha, Pechiyamman, Kumba Muneeswarar, Durga, Mahishasura Mardini, Sapta Matrikas, Karupparayar, Bhuvaneshwari and Bhairavar can be seen in the temple premises. During Sangam era, Anaimalai was called as Nannur and was ruled by King Nannan. He owned a mango grove near Aliyar River. The king was fond of his mango grove and was heavily guarded by his soldiers. He had proclaimed severe punishments on those who plucked fruits from the mango grove that belonged to him. One day, a group of girls were bathing in the Aliyar River. A little girl saw a mango in the river that had fallen from the grove. She consumed the fruit not knowing of the strict measures. The guards informed the incident to the King. Nannan sentenced her to death despite the plea of his subjects. The little girl pleaded for mercy and his father offered 81 elephants and gold equal to her weight to the King Nannan for sparing her life. The king refused and executed without any remorse. The villagers and relatives of the girl got furious over the incident, attacked the king and killed him in a battle near Vijayamangalam. The girl was buried in the graveyard near Aliyar River and later, a shrine was built in her honour. The villagers made a reclining image of the girl and started worshipping her. As she is in a crematorium (Mayanam) in a reclining form (Sayana), she came to be called as Mayana Sayani Amman. Later, it got corrupted to Masani Amman. As per legend, Sage Viswamitra decided to perform penance in the mountains of Kadaganachi. He heard that the place was inhabited by a demon named Tataka. He harassed the people and sages whoever ventured into his area. The sage felt that the demon might cause trouble to his penance. Hence, Sage Viswamitra requested King Dasaratha to send Lord Rama and Lakshmana along with him to the mountains of Kadaganachi. It is believed that the brothers made an idol of Masani Amman and worshipped her to bless them with the strength to kill the demon.

Masani Amman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Sakthi located in Anaimalai Town in Pollachi Taluk in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu, India. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. This Temple is a highly revered shrine among the Tamils. It is situated at the confluence of Aliyar River and the Uppar stream, nestled amid grasslands against the backdrop of mighty Anaimalai Hills.

Further, she asked them to destroy her idol once the demon was killed. But, Lord Rama refused to destroy the idol. He wanted the idol to remain in the place for the safety of the people residing in the region.

Beliefs:

Devotees pray to Masani Amman for relief from family problems, losses due to breach of trust and theft, mental worries, safety of children and spells and witchcraft effects. It is a popular belief here that Masani Amman will cure any illness if you go around her trident. The prasadam offered in the temple is called Pachilam Marundu. Women consume the prasadam and tie a black thread in the hand to realize their prayers. There is unique worship practice offered to the Justice Stone in this temple. Merchants incurring losses in their business, people facing harassment from their enemies, people lost their belongings grind red chillis in stone grinder of the temple and smear the paste on stone of Justice called Neethi Kal for divine justice from Masani Amman. Devotees also place their grievances in writing and tie it in the hands of Devi. It is strongly believed that solution would knock the doors of the applicant within 90 days.

He made an idol of the mother in reclining posture with the sand from the graveyard and Performed enhance to seek her blessings for his victory over Ravana. Pleased with his penance, Masani Amman appeared before Lord Rama and blessed him for his victory over King Ravana. Anaimalai: As the surrounding forest hosts huge numbers of elephants, the place came to be called as Anaimalai (Anaimalai means Elephant hill). Umbarkadu: Anaimalai was called as Umbarkadu in Padhitrupathu, one of the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthokai) in the Sangam literature.
