Members of the elite Ben Shilcutt 30-Plus Club share their keys to amazing membership recruitment.

Greetings, fellow leaders! This year, we have once again proven the tremendous value of teamwork. In the face of unprecedented uncertainty, we have continued to support the ATPE members in our regions and local units through our ATPE leadership. I know that many of you have contacted the state office to ask how you could do more to support your colleagues during these challenging times. I think we all felt a very human need to take action and help educators as they faced reductions in force (RIFs)—and, more often than not, our hands were tied, beyond offering a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. But I want to thank you for offering that ear and that shoulder. You also stepped up to the plate in the legislative arena—crying “Foul!” when lawmakers repeatedly attempted to pass permanent negative “reforms” in the name of helping districts deal with a temporary budget crisis. As I write this, the special session is ongoing, so I don’t know what the final score will be. I do know that each of you could be named Most Valuable Player. I’m sure you’ve noticed the sports lingo I’ve sprinkled throughout this message, so allow me to point you to “Grand Slam!” on pages 11–30. Each year, we publish our “team roster”—a list of ATPE’s more than 5,000 volunteer leaders across Texas. I’m so proud that my name is on this list. Year after year, Team ATPE achieves new feats, making ATPE the preeminent educators’ association in Texas. With this solid lineup in place, we’ll be ready for whatever challenges the 2011-12 membership year brings us. Let’s play ball! DAVID DE LA GARZA–JOHN KILPPER

AROUND TEXAS stories of local unit and region success Local Unit Management

Plano ATPE believes in the power of campus reps

PLANO–DOUG ECKART

Laurie Newby, president of Plano ATPE, believes her local unit is blessed to have such hard-working campus representatives. “The great thing is that it seems as though we are getting more and more reps who are really wanting to be involved and become more knowledgeable about ATPE and supporting our profession,” she says.

Plano ATPE President Laurie Newby speaks to local unit members during Plano’s campus rep appreciation dinner Nov. 18, 2010, at Spaghetti Warehouse.

How has Plano ATPE cultivated such a good network of volunteers? By making it known that the time and effort these educators put into their role is truly appreciated. At the beginning of each school year, the local unit holds a campus rep breakfast where leaders pass out prepackaged campus rep packets filled with the year’s membership materials. During the event, officers let the campus reps know about any important ATPE information for the coming year. Each campus rep also leaves the meeting with an ATPE promo item and a gift card; campus reps get to draw from a mix of $5–$25 gift cards for use at Plano-area stores and restaurants.

recruitment

Wanted: Retired leaders If you are a retired ATPE leader—even if you just retired at the end of the 2010-11 school year—you can earn up to $500 in gift cards for simply talking about ATPE! All retired ATPE volunteers are invited to share their enthusiasm about ATPE at district orientations in August. If you host an ATPE table at one of our approved nonlocal districts, ATPE will give you a $100 gift card. You can earn up to five gift cards! We make it easy for you by providing a list of potential districts and materials such as promo items, a table banner and applications. Volunteers are responsible for contacting districts to arrange their attendance at orientation events. Contact ATPE Field Representative Sarah Denny at (800) 777-ATPE or sdenny@atpe.org for more information.

In November, the local unit holds a campus rep appreciation dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse. The dinner features speakers such as the superintendent of Plano ISD, who gives a “state of the district” address; an ATPE state office staff member, who presents on topics including happenings at the Legislature; and an inspirational speaker who serves to motivate the educators. Campus reps also leave this dinner with promo items and gift cards. At the end of the school year, Plano ATPE holds a reception honoring campus reps, retiring members and scholarship recipients. In addition, campus reps and other volunteers are recognized for their hard work at general meetings. “Our first priority is being very responsive to calls for help from our campus reps,” Newby says. “We try to balance the knowledge and support they need with the need to respect their time and energies. And we always want them to know that we are here for them any way we can be of help!”

Be a summit volunteer, and you could win big Service to School & Community

Regions and local units reach out to tornadodamaged district Region 10 ATPE, Region 12 ATPE and eight Region 12 local units recently made financial donations to Rice ISD to help teachers replace instructional materials and supplies after an Oct. 24, 2010, tornado damaged an entire wing of Rice Intermediate/Middle School. The local units that contributed were Corsicana, Gatesville, Kerens, Killeen, Lampasas, Midway (12), Waco and West.

Service to School & Community

Odessa ATPE’s grand idea Many local units include funds for scholarships or donations to education foundations in their budgets. In January, Odessa ATPE carried out a project that truly supports the freedom to teach: The local unit placed all of its members’ names in a drawing for $100 to be spent on classroom supplies. Five elementary educators and five secondary educators won $100 prizes. “Bridget Loffler, our local unit treasurer, and I were discussing ways to boost morale,” says Olga Garza, Odessa ATPE president. “We wanted to let members know that we appreciate them, and we wanted to meet some of our members personally.” The drawing was publicized by email, and Garza asked her assistant principal at Noel Magnet, Alice Rodriguez, and her school’s secretary, Dianne Johnson, to draw the winners’ names out of the elementary and secondary jars. Each winner was asked to pick up his prize in person and take a photo. Honey Jackson, an ATPE member on Garza’s campus, combined the winners’ photos into one photo, which the local unit submitted to the Odessa American. The photograph and story of the drawing were published. Garza says she hopes the publication of the winners will attract more members to the local unit. The winners of Odessa ATPE’s drawing were Hillary Cohn, Pablo Davila, Rocio Davila, Larry Gaines, Pamela Lewis, Donica Short, Marsha Sowell, Stephanie Tercero, DeAnn Weekly and Shannon Wilson.

ATPE Summit attendees can kick their experience up a notch by volunteering to assist with various activities throughout the event, such as helping with the ATPE-PAC Silent Auction, answering questions at the Resources booth and more. In addition to playing a key role in the success of the first ATPE Summit, volunteers will be entered in a special drawing for one of five Kindles and $25 Kindle gift cards. Volunteer assignments will run from 15 minutes to one hour, and volunteers will be asked to wear red volunteer armbands during their assignments. The drawing will take place during the Closing General Session Saturday, July 23. Volunteers need not be present to win. Learn more about the opportunities available at www.atpe.org/summit/ volunteer.aspx; sign up by June 20.

Stand tall

No matter how bumpy the session got, ATPE By Kate Johanns

K

eeping track of the 82nd Legislature’s twists and turns would have been impossible—unless you chained yourself to your computer from gavel to gavel. The regular and special sessions contained many dramatic moments: Hundreds of ATPE members standing tall together on Lobby Day. Thousands of students, parents and educators converging at the Capitol during the Save Texas Schools rally. Sen. Wendy Davis’ filibuster in the final moments of the regular session. Waxahachie ATPE President Kim Kriegel’s powerful testimony before the House Appropriations Committee June 2. But though legislators’ support for public schools waxed and waned, one thing remained constant during the 82nd Legislature: the steadfast determination of ATPE leaders and their fellow educators. “I have never seen the outpouring from teachers like we’ve seen this session,” ATPE Governmental Relations Director Brock Gregg said May 31 on the Equity Center’s podcast. “They’ve been organized in each local school district, they have been working diligently with the same message, and they’ve been putting their spin on what these cuts are going to do to their classroom. It has made a difference.”

Mrs. Creager goes to Austin ATPE had record attendance at its 2011 Political Involvement Training and Lobby Day. An estimated 500 leaders left home on Valentine’s Day to show their passion for educating children. Following the event, leaders such as Region 10 ATPE President Merry Creager, a member of Ennis ATPE, delivered full Lobby Day reports to their administrators and colleagues back home. Creager prepared a thorough report on her trip for her principal. She covered ATPE’s legislative panel, which featured the chairs of the House and Senate education committees as well as leading Democrats from the committees; she reported on the Ennis constituency’s meetings with Rep. Jim Pitts (R–Waxahachie) and Sen. Brian Birdwell (R–Granbury); and she thanked her principal for allowing Ennis educators the time to advocate in person for their students. “All in all, it was a very enlightening trip,” Creager wrote to her principal. “Thank you for allowing us the time to do this and to hopefully help, in some small way, Texas education for the upcoming biennium.”

RALLY–AMY WHITE; CREAGER–ERICA FOS; DAVIS–COURTESY OF JACKIE DAVIS

How ATPE leaders across Texas rallied their colleagues and trumpeted their message varied, but each leader’s contributions— whether small or large—made a difference.

ATPE members show their association pride during the Save Texas Schools rally March 12. Organizers estimate 11,000 people attended the rally.

7

leaders held steady Making connections Region 10 ATPE Past President Jackie Davis, a member of Garland ATPE, began building a relationship with Rep. Angie Chen Button (R–Richardson) when she met Button at a meetthe-candidate function. Then-candidate Button told Davis she planned to develop advisory councils of constituents, so Davis quickly indicated her willingness to participate. “At the first roundtable, I told her that one way to cut spending might be to reduce some of the testing,” Davis says. “At the next roundtable, I told her that I would have to be careful what I asked for because there was a bill that would cut some testing but increase the number of tests for fifth grade—the grade that I teach. She thought that was funny.” Funny, perhaps, but Button remembered what Davis said. “When that bill came up for a vote, Rep. Button called me from the floor of the House to ask my opinion about how to vote on the bill,” Davis says.

Wish you were with us Region 20 ATPE members were looking for new ways to grab lawmakers’ attention, so when ATPE lobbyist Monty Exter suggested ATPE members try sending postcards to legislators, they jumped at the chance to test the idea.

“Monty said that legislators get a lot of calls and emails, and that one thing we haven’t really tried is postcards,” Region 20 ATPE President Sandra de Leon says. “They’re fast for members to write and fast for legislators to process. So we said, let’s be the guinea pigs.” De Leon worked with ATPE Communications to produce 500 postcards to distribute to region members. The region covered the postcard’s printing costs, and members were responsible for postage. The idea received a warm reception when the postcards were distributed at the region’s spring meeting. “Members loved the postcards,” de Leon says. “It’s a way to say that the children of Texas are our priority.”A

Personalized messages make a point ATPE members frequently copy ATPE Governmental Relations on the emails and letters they send to lawmakers. We appreciate this. This session’s communication has been tremendous—concise, clear and certainly not cut-andpasted. One example of excellent communication is this email written by Plainview ATPE Secretary Crystal Burdis: Dear sir, I am begging you to vote against HB 400. I strongly believe this bill will do permanent harm to Texas public schools. I have been a proud teacher for nine years now and am new to the Lubbock area. I have lived in Lubbock almost two years. As an ATPE member, I am very aware of what HB 400 can do to public school teachers, and I must tell you I am afraid. As a government official, you probably feel your hands are tied, but rest assured, the teacher groups will be offering an alternative to House Bill 400 with the Phillips Amendment (by Rep. Larry Phillips, R–Sherman) during debate. Our lobbyists have more information about the Phillips Amendment and will be distributing it to House members. Again, sir, please, please vote against HB 400. Respectfully,

Say it with pictures What better way is there to illustrate ATPE’s member-owned, member-governed philosophy? ATPE’s nine standing committees meet in October and April to take care of important association business. They prepare reports for consideration by the ATPE House of Delegates; coordinate the election of state officers; review the annual membership campaign and recruitment of minority and diverse populations; discuss strategies for developing future association leaders; and recommend ways to improve the association’s services and its communications, including media relations, atpe.org and publications. ATPE thanks the nearly 100 members who devoted their time to 2010-11 committee service. Please consider volunteering to serve on a 2011-12 standing committee or one of the special committees that select award recipients. To volunteer, complete the form at www.atpe.org/LeaderCentral/MyTools/cmteService.html by July 23.

Five keys to success Courtesy of Ben Shilcutt 30-Plus Club members The distinguished members of the Ben Shilcutt 30-Plus Club have recruited 30 or more new members during a school year. Eight leaders accomplished this recruiting feat in 2010-11, and some of them have shared their keys to success. Use these ideas next year, and you might unlock membership in this exclusive group for yourself !

BE GENUINE

“ Whatever success I have had in recruiting ATPE members is due to the fact that I truly believe ATPE is the best educator association available to Texas public school employees,” says Steve Thompson, Hays ATPE. “I think that belief comes across when I invite Hays employees to join ATPE. That belief—plus the willingness to speak up—are my not-so-secret ‘secrets of success.’”

BE BOLD

“ As a teacher passed by our ATPE booth, I asked for his membership—and stated that a campus representative was needed,” says Kay Hunnicutt, Mission ATPE. “He replied, ‘I say yes to both.’ This was for a junior high campus with no rep, and he was a new coach on the campus! What a difference he made! This taught me to be bold and always ask for a rep as well as membership.”

BE PERSONAL

“ I want potential members to know that I care about them and want them to have the best coverage and services offered,” says Jason Forbis, Midway (12) ATPE. “I also follow up with a personal email after they have joined to say thanks and that I am here if they need anything.”

BE RESOURCEFUL

“ I called the Nacogdoches ISD transportation director, and he invited the Nacogdoches ATPE leadership to make a presentation at the department’s summer meeting,” says Katherine Whitbeck, Nacogdoches ATPE. “Transportation campus rep Mary Jo Shepherd signed people up—including the transportation director!”

BE PROFESSIONAL

“ My best recruiting story would be from a new-teacher orientation where there were many organizations represented and some were being very forceful with their recruitment,” Forbis says. “I had spoken with an individual about ATPE, and she continued to look at other groups. She returned later that day to give me her application. As she was talking to me, someone from another organization came over, took her ATPE application from my hand and said to her that she was making a big mistake. She kindly took it back from him, gave it to me and said, ‘No, I am not. He has been the polite, professional representative, and I want to be a part of his group because that is the type of people I want representing me and to be associated with.’ I thanked her for her kind words and welcomed her to ATPE.”
