THE ILLUSTRATION PROCESS
A Helpful Guide
INTRODUCTION Illustration can be a rich and versatile approach, with nearly infinite numbers of styles and ways to bring the concept to life. Successful illustration commissions — with an efficient process and flawless execution — are born of knowing how to properly brief the artist and understanding their process.
BRIEFING A successful brief includes: •
Overview of the brand and project — what is the project? What is the purpose?
•
Moodboard showing imagery that is in line with the tone and style that the creatives are looking for visually (extra points if these samples are partially from the artist being briefed!)
•
Specific direction about what exactly each illustration should communicate
•
List of exact deliverables including any file delivery specs (e.g. 3 illustrations, delivered in layered psd files, A3 at 300dpi)
•
Deadlines and ideal schedule, including revision rounds — be sure to call out estimated timing for clients to review and provide feedback for the artist
•
Brand guidelines — colors, fonts, logo rules, any dos / don’ts, etc.
•
Kick-off call where the creatives can discuss all above points with the artist
PROCESS
A rough outline:
•
Artist presents concepts, generally through rough sketches with brief descriptions
•
Client selects one concept and communicates their thoughts and feedback
•
Artist transforms the chosen concept into a more detailed illustration
•
Client provides any feedback
•
Artist revises the sketch and moves to color with more refined art
•
Client provides final feedback
•
Artist refines the art and delivers the hi-res files per the brief 's specs
CASE STUDIES To illustrate dierent ways of going about the illustration process, we are honored to feature Oliver Barrett's work for Mondo, including his 2018 SXSW campaign for Showtime and his limited edition prints for A24 and Lionsgate.
