A GUIDE FOR PRODUCING AMAZING CREATIVE WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF COVID-19.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Producing photography under COVID-19 requires equal parts preparation and imagination. We’ve spoken with some of the best and brightest photographers in our industry to find solutions for conducting a safe and contact-free production, yielding the highest quality results.
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
APPROACH 1
Our first option for portrait photography and/or video is shooting at a safe distance of 10 feet or more from the subject. How does it work? The photographer will travel to the subject, setting up a simple backdrop outside their home or in any other outdoor environment. He/she will use a long lens to maintain 10 feet, a high mega pixel camera, to oer flexibility to crop in while maintaining high resolution results, and high quality glass lens for sharpness. The photographer will bring one assistant to help setup the shot eďŹƒciently. During the shoot the assistant will remain at least 10 feet away from subject. Once setup, the subject will be remotely invited to the location. All communication and direction will be handled from a safe distance of 10 feet or more. Once the session is complete the subject would leave the set and the photographer will pack up.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
APPROACH 2
Another option: stills photography remotely, without the photographer on site at any point. The photographer will prep a small photography kit, including polaroid camera, remote wireless shutter, tripod, very small light source with stand, and polaroid film. The camera will include a mounted iPhone, allowing the photographer to view from the same lens axis as the camera itself. The sanitized kit will be mailed to the subject. Over FaceTime, the photographer will direct the framing and positioning of the camera. The subject will hold the electronic remote shutter out of the frame, with the photographer directing the subject and asking to click the remote. The instantly produced polaroids will then be mailed to the photographer, scanned, and emailed to the client. The final selects will be scanned at extremely high res and go through image enhancement and post production.

ENVIRONMENTAL & LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY
APPROACH
Distance is key during this time, so let’s look to the master of staggeringly vast vistas to learn how to approach documenting our world today from afar. Renowned documentarian Stephen Wilkes has photographed world tragedies ranging from hurricane Katrina to the Gulf oil spill. With inventive techniques — along with drones and helicopters — he masterfully captures a changing reality with stunning panoramas that inspire awe and drive action. (When Wilkes published his collection of the abandonment and ruins on Ellis Island, he inspired and helped secure six million dollars in funding towards the restoration of the south side of the island.)

STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
APPROACH
Still life photography is one of the clearest options at this point — any photographer with his or her own studio space can be delivered the object(s) to be photographed while having remote check-ins with the client. And to take it a step beyond — let’s also consider paper crafts or set design studios that can fabricate scenes of their own, taking the photograph far past expectations.

ANIMATION
When live action productions are halted, animation can be an ideal option to turn to — it keeps the dynamic qualities of the original idea and can still communicate the story you want to tell (often times in even more imaginative ways!). That said, if you're new to animation, it can certainly be daunting to concept for it, so we are happy to help break down the different styles. We’ve also put together this guide to help explain the step-by-step process for a seamless production, and define any foreign terminology.
2D ANIMATION
APPROACH
2D animation spans a great number of disciplines. That said, when you think of 2D animation, you’re likely thinking of two different pathways: Traditional animation and motion graphics. Traditional animation, most commonly known as Cel animation these days, is put together frame-by-frame, combining illustrations to create beautiful animated pieces. This is how all of our favorite classic animated films and television shows were created. This style has seen a great resurgence in popularity as of late. Alternatively, motion graphics is the use of type, shapes and objects to explain a narrative. Motion graphics can help you illustrate a complex idea visually, making it endlessly easier to understand. Think about what happens when you enter a password incorrectly in a web browser and it turns red — you know exactly what that means. That is motion graphics!

3D ANIMATION
APPROACH
XK STUDIO
3D design and animation gives teams the ability to create in CG what they had previously only seen in real life. Whether it’s photorealistic imagery of nature, products , people, adorable animated characters (a la Pixar) or beautiful abstract renditions of whatever the imagination comes up with, this path can take you nearly anywhere you want to go — you just have to decide how creative you want to be.

STOP MOTION
APPROACH
NOELIA LOZANO
Stop motion video takes still life photography to a new level, animating inanimate objects to tell a distinct kind of story. Stop motion is shot in camera in a studio — while it can be more time-consuming than traditional 2D or 3D animation, it can also bring a very unique touch when executed properly.

MIXED MEDIA / POST-PRODUCTION If you already have the photography assets and are looking to give them new life, a post-production approach can be an eďŹƒcient (and contact-free) solution with visually stunning results, ultimately unveiling deeper stories within the photography.
MIXED MEDIA / POST-PRODUCTION
APPROACH
The results of a post-production or mixed media approach can appear highly complex, but the process itself is deceivingly simple. Once the client provides the artist with the assets and the brief, photographs are quickly brought to life through layers of digital processes and eects ranging from collage to animation to typography and beyond.

ILLUSTRATION Illustrators are pros at working remotely, and their work remains an option for what cannot be captured with photography. With nearly an infinite number of styles and ways to approach, illustration is a medium that can range in tone from serious to silly. Additionally, we’ve put together this guide for commissioning illustration, breaking down how to properly brief the artist and understand his or her process, creating space for an eďŹƒcient creative conversation and a flawless execution.

PUBLIC ART It is last but it’s certainly not least. Hear us out — while you may not have even been considering it, you should know that this still an option.
PUBLIC ART
APPROACH
Under the current regulations, mural art is deemed construction. If the artist is already on location and is working without a crew, public art is a safe and impactful way to convey your message.
