Dear friends, One of the highlights of working in philanthropy is witnessing the tremendous impact of generous gifts from donors – gifts that can transform lives. Because of you, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation is helping to promote health, hope, and healing within this community. In my first few months with Carolinas HealthCare System, I have seen, first-hand, how donors are helping to advance the latest technology, research, and programs that are transforming the delivery of healthcare. With your help, we are building programs, building facilities, and most importantly, building teams of experts who bring those programs and facilities to life. From grateful patients to dedicated celebrities – from large corporations to small family businesses and foundations – our supporters are all committed to the common cause of providing world-class care to all. Often our donors are the driving force behind a life-changing project or initiative. They deserve the credit for helping Carolinas HealthCare Foundation raise more than $45 million in 2016. It is our mission to support Carolinas HealthCare System by inspiring transformational giving to improve health, elevate hope, and advance healing – for all. Thank you for inspiring us through your loyalty and dedication. We hope that some of the following stories will move others to join us as we continue to transform healthcare in the Carolinas. With gratitude,

Investing in the Future of Cancer Care
U T E T I T I N S
Giving back is something that comes naturally to Howard Levine, former Chairman and CEO of Family Dollar Stores, Inc. He learned it from a young age in a family that demonstrated the importance of philanthropy, daily. Today, he and his family continue to make a tremendous impact, providing resources to improve education, healthcare, and programs benefiting families in our community. Long standing supporters of Carolinas HealthCare System, Howard and his wife Julie have provided significant gifts to Levine Children’s Hospital

Foundation to help expand Levine Cancer Institute. The gift, in conjunction with a commitment from Eric and Lori Sklut (Howard’s sister), will establish the Barbara L. Levine Infusion Center, adding 60 stateof-the-art infusion bays at the new outpatient facility. The infusion center will be named in memory of Howard and Lori’s mother, who passed away due to breast cancer in 1966.

This generous philanthropic investment will transform cancer services offered in the Infusion Center, where distinct levels of care will be offered, ranging from bays where patients receive simple injections, to common infusion areas with comfortable reclining chairs. Infusion Center staff will work closely with physicians, patients, and families to deliver comprehensive, high-tech infusion therapy in a restful

The Barbara L. Levine Infusion Center, generously supported by The Howard R. Featuring 60 infusion bays, the Center will also include private rooms for patients who need additional care. Each station will be equipped with its own flat screen television and have ample space for friends and family members to remain with patients while they receive treatment. Warm blankets, refreshments, and wireless access will be available for patients and their guests for comfort and convenience.

(L-R) Anna Majors, Levine Cancer Institute’s Dr. Lejla Hadzikadic-Gusic, and Sue Styers Anna and Sue each describe the other in one word: “determined.” It’s certainly an important trait to have as you navigate breast cancer. Mom, Sue, was wrapping up her treatment for the disease at Levine Cancer Institute when her 34-year-old daughter, Anna, was diagnosed. A married mother of a 22-month-old, Anna was expecting her second son. Just weeks after his delivery, she began chemotherapy. Both mom – and grandmother – are determined to see the young boys grow up. They will accomplish this with the support of their family, care team, and generous donors like the Sklut family. “We are both grateful for the opportunity to receive the finest care, close to home, ” said Anna.

For Simone and Kerry Vickar, charitable giving dates back to each of their childhoods.
