harratte is a project of the start of a new academic year. It is a group work project where every one come in to their allocated studio and work together under the same theme. This project is suppose to be for fun for students throughout architecture school.

This is a good opportunity for 1st year student to make new friends and experiences. This year I was allocated to an animal monument project. Basically, we are building a real-life scale or even bigger animal monument. Then the project would be exhibited at the end of the week.

Social housing

T

his is a typology study for a group work to analysis programme and structure of the building.

This care centre aims to create an environment for elderly and handicapped people in which suit each person according to their limitations and needs. The building consists of 4 different parts; a nursing home section, a section where a degree of care is provided, a section with indepedent dwellings, and central amenities. Because of these very different categories of accommodation was aimed at maximum interchange-ability, so that residents whose condition

improved or worsened would have to move from one section to another as little as possible. Thus the complex is not conceived as a conglomerate of separate building but as an urban area, in which all amenities would, principally, be available to all residents and public. This leads to the idea of creating a single continuous structural framework, based on the same modular unit, to meet the high requirements of the highly varied and complex programme.

LEITH 2030: A NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Leith masterplan

Masterplan 2030

A

two-week studio group project reading and understanding the urban neighbourhood of Leith in Edinburgh and presenting a proposal for future development of the allocated site that include research on the physical neighbourhood, its history, social and economic aspects of the site, rhythms of the neighbourhood and finally compiling all the findings into one proposal for the site in 13 years time. Leith is a new development area where it is being turned from an industrial area to leisure, accommodation and business areas. Moreover, there are new tram and bus route plans from Edinburgh to Leith with only 20 minutes travelling time, offering a much more convenient transportation. As a result, many new constructions are being carried out, and this site is one of them.

This masterplan proposes three main spaces: commercial, leisure and accommodation spaces with a central park and car park on site. This is to encourage people to come to the site, and to delete an industrial architecture image of Leith. The central park offers a breathing space on site in which many public activities can take place such as BBQ space, Sunday market, outdoor exercises, reading and chilling spaces. Around the park are buildings for commercial and leisure which are sat right next to Salamander place, and accommodation which is sat on the east side of the site. This section demonstrates processes, development works and proposed masterplan. These are outputs of studio G group works on site analysis and processes toward final masterplan.

BACKGROUND [ SITE ANALYSIS ]

Leith used to be one of the major port of Edinburgh in the past which was filled of factories and industrial sites. However as the industrial era has passed a lot of facilities are abandoned and not being used, some turned into warehouse and residential building. Leith is now encouraged by local authority to become a new watefront area including commercial, leisure and residential areas. Currently, Leith is still filled with industrial buildings which give out a raw and solid architecture impression, some have turned into warehouse or commercial building but many are still abandoned including our site.

S

On the site, new residential buildings and garden space are being built which reflect growth in Leith. As studio group site analysis: we start off with walking around the site and see the existing and under-construction buildings. Most of the buildings around our site, south Leith, mainly are old residential buildings on the south. However, on the northern part, new buildings were built, and residential flats are being built on the site.

SPACE AND HISTORY ANALYSIS [ ANALYSIS SITE AND SURROUNDING PLANS ] There are a lot of local businesses around the site. In the past, there used to be many different facto- ries such as rope work, Edinburgh roperies and sailcloth manufac- tory, bacon cuing factory, whisky bottle pint. These factories come and goes from time to time. Until, the site is not use for industrialisation any- more, and a lot more housing is happening in the area. Thus, on the site, residential flats are being build. Top: Space analysis plan Bottom: Leith history plans back in 1900s, 1940s and 1970s.

STATISTIC ANALYSIS

SITE SITUATION

[ SITE CONTEXT AND DEMOGRAPHIC ]

[ UNDER-CONSTRUCTION SITE ]

In term of demograpgic, 90.3% is British then asian immigrants 6.6% with minority of black, mixed and other, 1.2%, 1.1% and 1.2% respectively. In term of industry business, business services is the main area with 16%, then health and social, and retail trade, 14% and 13% respectively. Moreover, for house pricing, compare to that of Edinburgh, Leith housing price is not too high and it is affordable. Most people living here are working-class men age around 25- 44, then 45-64 for second biggest group. Comparing the population data of Edinburgh and Leith, Edinburgh has higher number in all the age group except woking-class men. This could be predicted that Leith would grow bigger and faster in term of number of population and variation partly because of the cheaper land and houses here. As a result, more businesses and commercial spaces are being built.

PORTFOLIO

This is the current situation on the site. The area in orange is under-going construction to build residential flats. This is due to the high demand of flats in Leith. The interesting feature of this is residential buildings are built on the edge of the site facing each other, forming their own external courtyard. As a result, this creates spaces that are not dense or too stuffy.

SITE ATMOSPHERE [APPROACHE ROUTES]

[ROUTE ELEVATIONS]

We were split into 3 small groups to analysis the site and routes to the site. Each group has to record what is happening along the route, what sort of activities are taking place, sound, atmosphere, materials and buildings.

These are 3 different elevations from each routes taken toward the site and each area is annotated. Most of buildings are residential buildings. However, some are services or businesses. Building height around the area mostly are about 3-5 storey high, there are a few that is 7 storey high.

First group was taking the route toward the site from the west as well as group two. This is because Leith city centre is located on the North-west. Group one takes the back route of the site through small streets.

Overall atmosphere and material of the building is sandstone and dark-tone colour brick, the area is quite windy and cloudy.

Second group takes the route on the main streets; Links place, Queen Charlotte street toward the south part of the site.

PROPOSAL MASTERPLAN [ Masterplan 2030 ]

A

fter site analysis and researches, we as in a small group come up with three different masterplan proposals. This is my group masterplan proposal for Leith 2030.

We start by taking main possible entrance points as a key starter then divided the site into different zones. We decided to have to public space in the north-west of the site then gradually building up to become private spaces. This is because on the north-west side of the site is sit right next to the Salamander place which make it a lot easier to travel to, comparing to that on the other side of the site. On the other side of the site, it is simply just a dry land without any use. We want to encourage more people to come and work in Leith, thus we would like to create a small green space in the centre where people can relax and take a break. Area of the masterplan diagram on the right represents possible private and public space throughout the site. Areas in circle are private spaces which are designed for residential area. On the other hand area within square are public spaces where restaurant and many shopping areas can open.

DIAGRAMS [ MASTERPLAN STRATEGIES ] These diagrams present our main strategies taken toward building our final masterplan. Firstly, we were looking at key entrance points from surrounding area into the site. Then base on these assess route, we design public and private spaces for what part of masterplan. Then, zoning for commercial spaces and leisure space. We start to connect the main entrance points together which create different routes on masterplan. This is our masterplan proposal showing an axonometric with pos- sible building functions. We are having green space in the middle of the site, retail, business and commercial space on the north- west of the site. Then, we have residential flats on the other side, and carpark on the south. Public space, this would be retail shops, convenient store, small take away places. We could also have business area as well for those who want to open small and middle size offices.

APOLOGIA

M

oving from the large neighbourhood scale to a smaller scale building, this is a project that brings together all the research and findings from the previous projects and uses them to design a housing proposal scheme on a chosen site within the study neighbourhood given. In this task, we are given two small area on our masterplan to choose and develop it in further details. I chose the area right next to salamander place, which offering easy accessibility and view to the building, and it is also a boundary between public and private spaces. This is because in this project I aimed to design an accommodation which is not only just for living but also serve a commercial purpose as well.

Ground floor acted as a semi-public space where main circulation occur. There are reception, convenient store, cafe and library in which residents and outsiders can access and use the space. At the back of the building, there is a courtyard, offering green space for relaxing and exercising. This space also make the back area of the building feel much more pleasant for those who are parking their cars, and visitors from other buildings. Upper floors are designed for residential space targeting at middle-class and elderly people. Moreover, the central space of each floor offers socialising area, circulation and view of the central atrium. Double-glazing windows are applied throughout the facade with combination of rotating shutter as view and sun protection.

CONCEPT DRAWING [ INITIAL BUILDING PROGRAM IDEA ] My initial building idea is an incorporate space where residential, commercial and leisure spaces exist in one building. According to the masterplan, this area is a boundary between public and private spaces, which make the area suitable to add extra activities to residential space. This would also encourage circulation and human interaction throughout the space. The building is designed for middle-class and elderly people who work in Leith and want to live comfortably. The building offers luxury residential flats on the upper floors and a central socialising space on each floor. Commercial and leisure spaces are on ground floor in which residents and visitors can access, offering diverse activities. These spaces are library, cafe and a small-scale convenient store. These flats are en-suits with generous room space. They have bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. In the centre, there would be gathering space for residents in that particular floor for socialising and relaxing.

38

MASSING DRAWING [ MASSING ANALYSIS ] After choosing the site and design my building concept, the building is needed to be materialise to form a building that serve the concept idea. Thus, I have done basic site analysis with building of different shape and form to see how people would possibly interact with the shape, and what further development is need to be done. I design 3 basic massing design: first is a simple rectangular building, second one is L-shape, and last one is U-shape building. My idea is encouraging movement and circulation, and the best answer to to the concept is U-shape massing. It allows people to funnelling along the shape of the building, and also add an extra activity space in the middle. Moreover, the shape is quite unique, interesting and challenging to design. Once I have my massing concept, I have done a initial drawing of how my building would be like in term of function and appearance on page 41.

MODEL DEVELOPEMENT [ SPATIAL MODEL ANALYSIS ] As I was planning in my concept drawing, commercial and leisure spaces are located on the ground floor and upper floors are residential area. With model study process, I found the atrium space in the middle could give an impression of openness and encourage people to discover upper-floor spaces.

uilding is seperated into two main spaces: one is commcercial/leisure space, another one is residential space.

Ground floor is commercial space consists of reception, library, cafe and convenient store. From library lower floor can look up through the sky light to see what is happening above the ground and also more sunlight can get through. Library can be accessed by anyone including residents and visitors. Reception has a seating space and mailbox area. cafe and convenient store entrances are out side the building so

that it has a sense of separation. Floor 1-3 are accommodation spacs with communal area in the centre of each floor where residents can meet up and socialise or relax. It is aiming to accommodate up to 2 people in each flat. However, it should be enough space for up to 6-8 people in case of visitors. In term of exterior space, there is back garden of the building people can use the space for many activities such as exersice and hanging out space.

DIAGRAMS [ BUILDING COMPONENTS ] These diagrams are building key strategies summary. I start off with analysing site context, landscape and possible circulation route people would likely take around the site. Then, analyse a massing building programs on site to see how people would possibly interact with the building, and how this could influence building shape. After building form is designed, I looked into steel frame structure and circulation through out the building. Then, shutter facade is added on in order to prevent direct sunlight in summer and view screen for privacy. Furnitures and spaces are laid out to see space inhabitation.

INHABIT

BUILDING INTERIOR

LIVING SPACE

T

he last part of the ‘A home in the city’ project which focuses on experiential and atmospheric aspects of the design. How does it feel to inhabit this space, what is it like? I chose to do library and one of the flats as my inhabit space because these two spaces are completely different. Library is a temporary place where people come to enjoy themselves, research, write, read, relax for only a period of time. Thus, the design has to be universal and convenient for everyone to use. The spacial program of library is divided into 3 different parts: first is a group work area and children zone, second is further in and much more quiet than first space, last space is going down one level which is a study space where readers can have a quiet time to do their works.

On the other hand, individual flat is a permanent place where they live, eat, sleep. Thus, the space would be different according to one needs. As modular units, these flats have a similar layout and room plan but once the tenants move in, they could change, renovating the space to their style or they could just leave it as it is. After the review, I have done more section perspective renders and improvement on current plans and sections of library space and residential room to show more spatial experience that one could get when enter the spaces. Perspective section render on the right illustrates different spaces and activities, atrium circulation and human interaction throughout the building.

EXPLORING EXPERIENCE METAL WORKSHOP

[ APOLOGIA ]

E

xploring experience aims to explore the quality and property of studio material, and use the property to design a building for exhibition and workshop spaces.

Firstly, we were tasked to create a festival route so that our building concept can be base on As I was exploring durham, I found that there were a lot of local market stalls and businesses that were selling all range of products such as food, clothes and second hand items. I found this is quite an interesting human interaction and circulation space in which I would like to enhance this aspect further, leading me to do market festival route. The festival route is running in loop through my site which it used to be a government office building but currently demolished to make ways for new office, commercial, leisure and residential buildings. There would be a lot of circulation and interaction in the space which is a good opportunity for market festival to take part. (These are shown in my site analysis and festival diagrams and collages). Having metal as my studio material, my building would have a metal workshop that produce pop-up market stalls which then they would be put in festival route. To produce unique and interesting stalls, artists would be working with local market to bring out the best design and market stalls. Then, these market stalls would be put up on the outside the building for the festival route.

This is my concept festival idea that my building will base on. In order to enhance circulation and human interaction for my festival, I design to maximise access route to the site as much as possible which involve levelling the site into 3 levels, allowing a walk through the site. Moreover, to enhance the idea of discovery, I have separate the building into two parts with a bridge connecting them together, and combining with an unique landscape visitor would have to walk down under the bridge to get to market festival area. Along the way, visitors would experience an idea of going from small space to a bigger space as well as experiencing rawness, solidity and dull property of metal material in which I chose to use oxidised metal as main building facade. In term of function, this oxidise metal facade is a hinge facade, allowing them to be open or close. This is also to allow more view and wind protection to the building. Inside the building is internal exhibition space to exhibit market stall prototype, ideas or processes. There is also an educational space for people who are interested in metal workshop to take classes. In term of spatial program, workshop space is located on ground floor which allow easy accessibility for material and market stalls transportation. 1st floor is where the main entrance, reception and education space would be. Top floor is used for exhibition space and artist studio. The building is separate into two part one for public and another for private space. The public space side is where reception and exhibition space would be. On the private space side is used for workshop, studio and education space.

BACKGROUND [ SITE ANALYSIS ]

Durham is a small town yet it is full of history and many essential places, especially durham cathedral. We were given 2 sites to choose from: one is site 3 and another is 7. Both sites have completely different characters. Site 3 is located right in durham city not too far from train station, main bus terminal and local market place. This is also similar for site 7 as well but site 7 is more hidden and hard to get to by vehicle which could lead to a difficulty in transporting material to the site. Comparing to site 3 where it is located right next to the main street, offering easy transportation and view to the site.

S

Since my market festival routes aims to enhance human interaction and circulation. Site 3 is a more suitable site than site 7. Currently, a construction site is taking place on site 3, buildings new commercial, leisure and residential space. Previously, the site is used to be where government office building located. Next to the site on south side, new commercial and residential building are being constructed.

Along the route, there are 4 main spots that festival takes place, one of them is local marketplace, and the main market festival spot would be site 3 which is colour-coded yellow. On the northern part of the site is new residential (in green), commercial (in blue), and office (in red) spaces. On the southern part is also where new commercial building is being built.

SITE ANALYSIS [ SPACIAL ANALYSIS ] This diagram indicates different building activities throughout site context. As indicated, there are many public spaces around the site and there is not just public space but also office space as well. On the right, there are collages showing different type of market stall in different spots on the festival route, and how the design of each market stall change depends on its theme and location. This is an initial concept of my market festival route which would be a based idea of my building concept.

MATERIAL EXPLORATION [ MARKET STALL DESIGN ] These are my initial material experiment with metal in the workshop. The shape of the metal is randomly made in order to explore material in many ways such as bending, cutting, wielding. This is to test out the property of metal as a material. Unfortunately, our workshop has a limited access to metal machine. I cannot experiment with metal fully and I have to use other material to explore metal instead. I used card boards and painted it in order to emphasise metal material. These are ideas, metal experiment and market stalls making models.

BUILDING PROGRAMS [ INITIAL SKETCHES AND IDEAS] These drawings illustrate 4 initial ideas of my building programs, layout and landscape and analysis on how people would interact and move throughout the space. This is to find the most suitable building program arrangement. From these exploring, it leads me to one of the main ideas of the site design that is to divided the site landscape into 3 level in which people can walk through the site. This is to enhance human interaction and circulation.

FINAL DEVELOPMENT METAL WORKSHOP

T

he site is sat in the centre of Durham city. Areas next to the site are new commercial , offices and accommodations, across the Milburngate bridge is also commercial space and market area. Moreover, the site is only 15 minutes walk from train station and bus terminal. These give a credible opportunity for the site to become a new central market place of Durham. Market festival is a main activity for the site. People movement and interaction are main factors in determining the shape and size of my site and building. In order to maximise human interactiona and movement. I have divided the site landscape into 3 main levels; one on the bridge level, central level, and river level, which visitors can access the site from all levels and directions. The building is sat in the centre of the site which visitors can access

from the bridge and river level. The building is divided into 2 main parts, with a bridge connecting them together. First part is for pulic use; reception and exhibition space. Second part is for private use which is for workshop, studio and educational space. On the outside is where market festival takes place. Grid steel frame is used as a building structure. In stead of hiding them away, the structure is revealed on the inside and outside. This is to show its appearance and property as a structural material as well as highlighting metal as a theme material. Market festival is happening on the outside where people can access from all directions. In the centre is where outdoor performance/ mini theatre/ exhibition/ venue occur. There are also chilling space on North side of the site.

ISOMETRIC SPACIAL DIAGRAM [ BUILDING PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES ] This diagrams demonstrate building external programs and activities which taken place during market festival weeks. They show essential points of the building and landscape to access and/or view the festival, and experience visitors and passerby would get during the week. This is also including the external circulation of the site which encourage people to walk through, stop and interact with each other. With the building layout, it would help to funnel people into the market space from the river side, and give a feeling of adventure when enter through road level. This is not only because of the shape and plan of the building but also the material of the building which offer an unique and discovery impression.

CRAFTING ARCHITECTURE DRAWING WORKSHOP

[ SITE, DIAGRAM, STRUCTURE, DETAIL ]

C

rafting architecture is a part of design module which help us, students, to learn how to do site reading drawings, building and spatial diagrams as well as structure diagrams and details. Most of my outputs for crafting architecture are done after the session, and some are process works from the session. Throughout the year crafting session, I have learned more on how to do diagrams and structure, especially

details of building. In my opinion, there should be more crafting architecture session on how to design the building, what is the best circulation or how to arrange the space so that it would not make sense. Overall, crafting architcture is a helpful session which help us to learn more about doing process work better, and learn how to do better detail and techniquecal part of the building.

SITE READING WORKSHOP [ STUDENT UNION AND NORTHERN STAGE ] In this session, we get to learn how to do a quick site reading sketches which would help us observe the material and spatial quality of a given site. I have done a quick drawing of buildings around student union and northern stage which I finalise them later after the session. I have a section cutting through area between student union and northern stage as shown in the top drawing, and other site observation drawings. DIAGRAMMING WORKSHOP [ BUILDING STRATEGY ] We get to learn how to properly do diagrams to show builing strategies and other spatial or program of the building. I find this workshop very helpful because I was not very good at diagramming until I learn what is the key point we need to look at for diagramming. All of my diagrams here are process and final work from exploring experience project. Metal workshop uses digram

STRUCTURE WORKSHOP [ BUILDING STRUCTURE STRATEGY ] In this session, we get to learn how our building structure would work when we tried to design a variety of dbuilding forms. Combining this workshop with diagramming workshop helps to make a quick building structure diagram. I have created steel frame joint detail on sketch up, and also a 1:50 physical section model of the exploring experience to shop my structure strategy. Again, all of these are coming from exploring experience project. 1:50 section model

ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE MOVIE INSPIRATION

REDESIGN EXPERIENCE

W

e were given a scene from Alien (1979), this scene we focused on first perspective spatial experience which the character had experienced in the movie. This led us to focus on building our maquette on the scale of 1:1 so that the space could be experienced directly. I think this project was a good opportunity for us, architecture student, to pay more attention on how people would actually experience space as we are designing a building/space, and how

we could manipulate it with different techniques such as lighting, space size and sound effect. We built a maquette of 2 metres by 2 metres. We had split the maquette into different parts which were taken care by different group members. Then we combined them together, and hung the maquette from ceiling. Our teamwork worked smoothly, each member worked hard to accomplish his/her task.

ALIEN SCENE 2 [ MOVIE INSPIRATION ] Alien (1979) scene 2. We were given second scene from Alien where a character was looking for a cat. This scene does not have conversation, however, the scene play more with lighting and soundtrack to emphasise the mood of unknown threat. We decided to focus on lighting, sound and first person experience for our maquette. Thus, our maquette scale is 1:1. In the scene, we concentrated on the theme of isolation, uncertainty and confusion, which are represented best in a dark space. This is where our design layout come in. We designed a maze-like space with different head level, manipulation of light, and texture of walls, creating tight and big spaces with different atmosphere.

This maze-like maquette is designed so that the visitor can experience isolation, uncertainty and confusion. With different head level and size of the space, visitor would be able to experience tightness and uncomfortable feeling. It is designed so that the space is gradually getting tighter until the end where the space suddenly getting bigger and higher.

Final review [ FINAL MAQUETTE ] This is our maquette in the final review. We cover the maquette with bin bags to block visitor vision so that they would not know what to expect when they are going into the space. Again, our theme is isolation, uncertainty and confusion. This is accomplished through a form and size of maquette, manipulation of light and sound, and wall texture.
