A legend in my family goes something like this: My Great-grandfather from many generations back (one of the original European settlers in the new land), was an explorer, and with the onset of Spring thaw, he headed West. Time passed, and as the trees lost their leaves and the lakes froze over, there was no sure sign of a healthy return. Another fulls cycle of seasons passed and this second Winter he was declared lost & dead. The following Summer he returned with his “Indian” wife, having married the princess of the tribe. My brothers, sister and I were told this story many times as children. The tribe has always remained nameless. And it is not for the sake of awakening deep tribal connections or empathy, or the ability to make a claim to what might be due an American Native that I tell the story; but that in having left my land for a return to the European continent, in a search for identity, part of it was presented to me as a child. The American identity is a melting pot of peoples, but with this comes an inability to recognize a single American culture. Returning from overseas my irst time, I completed my forms for nationality as Irish, German, Italian...; not realizing that what was expected was my citizenship, “American”, not my heritage. This internal quest will ind no end, but I thank the enlightened artists and musicians I met as I passed through Australia—who like myself, were questioning their link to European heritage—who demonstrated to me that the source of their inspiration for identity would be the land.

After returning to the states, and now in Germany, I understand the relationship one has to the land’s physical attributes of one’s birth. The irst, uniquely American aspect in all of this being the Native American. They are part of my identity, and perhaps not enough, but as this new millennium pushes forward with technology, a return, not to roots, but to the land should be sought: My reason for interweaving these primitive images amongst the high-gloss, metallic symbols for logos and lyers. We must not lose the wonderfulness of dreams and fantasy, of arts and humanities: What our bodies are capable of, without an implanted chip. The more personal side of this one-page epistle follows, accordingly: Myself, from this generation (after a return to my European heritage, from which the original settlers came to the new land), am an explorer, and with the onset of the technological awakening headed East. Time passed, and as the paints became brittle and the creative voice tired, there was no sign of a healthy artistic return. Another full-time position at another software house came along, and I declared myself lost. The following job “somewhere” must return to me a creative life, having married the Technology and the Art! -David B. Rader 29. January 2000 Paderborn, Germany

Michele McCain │ www.michelemccain.com I love a good challenge. My career has endured many; my personal life richer for the experiences. Each obstacle has been an opportunity for greatness, and having lived and worked in diverse multi-cultural settings, understanding foreign languages, my unique catalog of how I got the job done well is thick and weighty. Technology plays an immense role in my successes. While studying art at the dawn of DTP and CAD, a knowing professor told me to concentrate more on being creative: ‘Learn to draw and paint. And if the need arises, you’ll learn to use the computer as just another tool.’ She was right. Now, I can sit down at a computer and quickly have the text written, the timeline drawn-up or the eCard / the lyer / the poster designed & distributed to thousands of people instantaneously.

task-at-hand. And unlike many with whom I have worked, I am grateful to discover someone has a better solution; I know how to ask questions; I know how to learn, too. The exchange of knowledge and information, clearly put -communication–, has changed drastically over the course of my career: My cell phone can now easily access the contents of entire libraries, thanks to the Internet. But in the end, it is my own intelligence, my unique catalog of experiences, that allow me to demonstrate best practices in facilitating and handling the low of this or any communication. And one has to be bold, con ident, but even more so I have to remain dynamic in my approach to ‘how’, since the rules of yesterday may or may not apply to today.

This need for speed; quick, concise decision making: rapid action – can only be achieved with strong organizational skills and a competent, functioning team of motivated players. Myself a master of many things, I willing accept the role as team captain, having organized, managed and led groups of up to nearly 1000 participants (Willing and/or otherwise…). I lead by doing and this includes mentoring and teaching. When a de icit arises, I know I can readily ind the resource or skilled person who can therefore assist me in mastering the next
